Most mid-size women I dress have been handed the same old rules: hide the hips, avoid wide legs, never tuck. I'd throw most of those out. What actually decides whether a fall outfit works on a size 10 to 18 frame is where the rise sits, where each layer ends, and whether the fabric skims or clings. The twenty outfits below cover jeans and cardigans for errands, blazers for work, sweater dresses and skirts for weekends, and a few dressier looks for dinners and holidays. Each one comes with shoes and a bag, so you can see it finished. Where a detail matters for a fuller bust, a curvier hip or a shorter torso, I've said so.

The Waist Gap and How to Get Rid of It
Half of these outfits start with high-rise jeans or trousers, and the most common fitting problem I see on mid-size women is the gap at the back waistband. If your hips are curvier than your waist, jeans that fit the hip stand away from the small of your back, and jeans that fit the waist won't go over the hip.
There are three honest fixes, in order of what I try first:
- Look for jeans labelled curvy or contour waist. They're cut with more difference between waist and hip, so the back sits flat.
- Buy for the hip and have a tailor take in the back waist. It's one of the simpler alterations and usually costs less than a second pair, though prices vary by area.
- In a pinch, a belt pulls a small gap closed, but it will bunch the fabric at the back if the gap is more than an inch or so.
Stretch denim helps with comfort when you sit, but heavy stretch relaxes during the day and the gap comes back by the afternoon. I prefer jeans with only a small amount of stretch for that reason.
1. Straight Leg Jeans And Cardigan Fall Outfit

A cardigan with straight-leg jeans is the outfit I'd start any fall wardrobe with. The jeans should be high-rise and fit through the hip with no pulling across the front and no gap at the back waist. Under the cardigan, a fitted crewneck tee or scoop tank keeps the base smooth. Length is the real choice: a hip-length cardigan buttoned, or a longer one worn open, which gives you a long line down the front. Brown ankle boots for color, white sneakers for an easier day. A rust or oatmeal cardigan goes with almost everything you already own.
2. Wide Leg Jeans And Fitted Sweater Fall Outfit

Wide-leg jeans scare a lot of mid-size women, and they shouldn't. The secret is a top that follows the body. A fine-knit mock neck or crewneck, tucked fully or at the front, shows where your waist is, and the wide leg then balances the hip rather than adding to it. A chunky sweater on top is where this goes wrong, since you end up with volume at both ends. Dark-wash denim looks more put together. Pointed ankle boots continue the leg; loafers are fine on warmer days if the hem clears them. A medium-width belt adds definition, and chocolate or forest green on top keeps it seasonal.
3. Black Jeans And Denim Shirt Fall Outfit

A denim shirt with black jeans is dependable, but only if the shirt has room across the bust. Do the button test: if the placket gapes between buttons when you sit or reach, size up and have the waist taken in, rather than living with the gap. Tuck it into high-rise black straight jeans or leave the bottom buttons open over a fitted tank. Rolling the sleeves twice to show the wrist lightens the look. Black loafers keep a tonal line; tan boots add contrast. A cognac tote and a camel coat on top when it's cold. Black and blue denim together look deliberate because the colors are clearly different.
4. Sweater Vest And Button Down Fall Outfit

If you want layers without the bulk of a heavy sweater, a sweater vest over a button-down is it. The shirt should skim rather than strain and show a little below the vest hem. I usually suggest a V-neck vest to mid-size clients with a fuller bust, since it breaks up the chest area and lengthens the neck; a crewneck reads more preppy but can make the bust look wider. Straight jeans or tailored ankle pants underneath. Loafers with visible crew socks and a structured top-handle bag. Cream with navy is easy; a burgundy vest gives more color.
5. Blazer And Wide Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

A blazer sharpens wide-leg jeans instantly, but fit at the bust is everything. It should close without pulling into an X at the button, and you should be able to cross your arms in it. A single-breasted blazer ending at the upper hip is the most versatile length on a mid-size frame. Longer ones work too if the top underneath is tucked so the waist still shows. The jean hem should nearly reach the top of your shoes. Pointed flats, heeled boots or loafers keep the wide leg from looking casual. Camel or charcoal suits the season, and a structured tote holds the line.
6. Leather Jacket And Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A cropped leather jacket over a flowing midi skirt is a contrast I love: something stiff on top, something that moves below. The skirt should sit securely at your natural waist; satin or pleated both work. Add a fitted knit in black or cream, then a leather or faux-leather jacket ending at the waistband, which keeps the skirt's shape visible. Knee-high boots close the gap between hem and shoe, so no stretch of bare leg cuts the line. Ankle boots look lighter in early fall. One practical note: a bias-cut satin skirt shows every bump, so I'd choose pleats if that bothers you.
7. Trench Coat And Straight Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

When the weather changes by the hour, a trench gives coverage without winter weight. Tan or navy over a striped knit and high-rise straight jeans. Shoulders matter most in a trench; if the seam drops past your shoulder, the whole coat looks borrowed. A knee-length trench suits most heights, and pushing the sleeves up a little stops them covering your hands. Loafers when dry, water-resistant ankle boots when rain is forecast. Tie the belt at the waist rather than buckling it, and it'll give you shape without digging in. A light scarf adds color near the face.
8. Sweater Dress And Knee High Boots Fall Outfit

A sweater dress is a full outfit in one move, so the knit has to be right. Ribbed knits cling more than smooth ones; on a mid-size frame I usually prefer a medium-weight smooth knit that skims. A wrap shape or a belt gives the waist definition; a straight cut works if the accessories are sharp. Knee-high boots need calf room, so check a wide-calf version if standard shafts pinch. Dress and boots in a similar color create a long line. A tailored wool coat on top, a pendant and a structured bag. Charcoal and burgundy are dependable.
9. Plaid Shirt And Black Pants Fall Outfit

Plaid is fall's most familiar pattern, but a stiff flannel can make the shoulders and upper arms look broader. I check the shirt through those two places first, then tuck it into black high-rise trousers or stretchy ponte pants, straight or gently flared. The black base keeps a rust or green plaid from taking over. Black Chelsea boots or loafers and a simple leather bag. Add a belt if you like more definition. For a third layer, choose a solid cardigan or utility jacket that picks up one color in the plaid, which ties it together without matching. Small earrings, nothing bigger.
10. Utility Jacket And Dark Wash Jeans Fall Outfit

An olive utility jacket adds color and pockets to a simple denim outfit. Layer it over a cream ribbed sweater or a striped long-sleeve tee with dark straight or bootcut jeans. Drawing the waist tie in gives shape; leave it open for an easier look. Before buying, check the back with the sweater on: lift both arms forward, and if it pulls across the shoulder blades, it's too small. Brown ankle boots suit the earthy palette. A tan crossbody, hoops and a patterned scarf when it cools. Markets and travel days are where it earns its place.
11. Slip Skirt And Chunky Sweater Fall Outfit

A silky slip skirt works in fall once you pair it with a heavy knit and solid shoes. Choose a bias-cut midi that moves easily over the hips. Chunky sweaters add bulk, so I either do a loose front tuck or the trick of tucking the sweater hem into a hidden elastic band at the waist, which controls the extra fabric. A sweater ending at the high hip can go untucked. Knee-high boots for warmth, slim sneakers for daytime. A cream sweater with a bronze or burgundy skirt is an easy contrast. A leather shoulder bag gives the soft pieces some structure.
12. Corduroy Pants And Knit Top Fall Outfit

Corduroy pants add texture even in a plain palette. I prefer a fine or medium wale on mid-size clients; a wide wale adds visual bulk at the thigh. High-rise straight or wide-leg in rust, olive or chocolate. A thin fitted sweater tucks without lumps; cream gives contrast, and a matching brown gives a tonal look. Loafers or ankle boots with a sturdy sole carry the fabric's weight. A woven belt and a structured satchel. Cropped denim jacket or wool coat on top. Corduroy wears at the inner thigh over time, so wash it inside out to slow the rub.
13. Shacket And Leggings Fall Outfit

For busy days, a shacket over thick leggings is comfort that still looks finished. The leggings must be opaque, so do a squat test in the fitting room and check in daylight. A high-rise waistband that doesn't roll when you sit matters more than the brand. Over a longer fitted tee or thin sweater, a shacket covering the upper hip gives structure. White sneakers on mild days, lug-sole boots in the wet. A roomy crossbody and a baseball cap make it sporty. Keep the base layer close to the body, since a loose tee plus a loose shacket adds width you didn't ask for.
14. Turtleneck And Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A turtleneck tucked into a midi skirt is an outfit I'd send someone to a museum, a work day or a family lunch in. The knit needs stretch at the neck and enough length to stay tucked when you lift your arms. An A-line or pleated midi that sits at the waist. Tonal pairings, chocolate with camel or black with charcoal, give a long, clean line. Knee-high boots under the hem keep you warm. A turtleneck shortens the neck visually, so if you have a fuller bust and a shorter neck, a mock neck gives the same feel with more space. A tailored coat and a structured bag finish it.
15. Monochrome Brown Fall Outfit

All brown is the most seasonal outfit here, and you don't need an exact match. Chocolate wide-leg trousers with a fitted cocoa sweater, then a camel coat or brown suede-style jacket on top. Mixing espresso, caramel and taupe looks richer than one flat shade. Different textures stop it going flat: smooth trouser, soft knit, napped suede. Dark brown loafers or ankle boots and a cognac bag. Gold jewelry suits the warmth. If deep brown drains your face, put the lightest shade, a tan or cream knit, closest to it.
16. Burgundy Blazer And Black Trousers Fall Outfit

Burgundy reads seasonal without looking casual, which makes it a good work color. A single-breasted burgundy blazer over a black scoop-neck top, with high-rise black trousers in whatever leg shape suits you. The dark base lets the blazer stand out. Pointed flats or block-heel boots carry you through a full day. My check is always the shoulders and the closed button: smooth across the back, no pull at the front. Swap the black top for cream if you want it softer. With small gold earrings and a structured tote, it goes from the office to dinner without changing anything.
17. Floral Midi Dress And Ankle Boots Fall Outfit

A floral dress doesn't have to wait for spring. For fall I pick a darker background with a small or medium print in burgundy or rust, since large pale florals look summery. Long sleeves add coverage; a wrap waist or a removable belt lets you adjust the shape. Suede or leather ankle boots and a cropped cardigan or denim jacket, which ends at the waist and keeps the dress from looking shapeless. A compact crossbody. When it gets cold, add opaque tights and a wool coat. Floral midis photograph well, which makes this a good choice for seasonal photos too.
18. Denim Jacket And Knit Dress Fall Outfit

Early fall is when a knit dress with a denim jacket makes the most sense. A ribbed midi with enough stretch to move in and enough structure to hold its shape; thin ribbed knits show underwear lines, so a smooth, edge-free slip helps. The jacket should end near the waist or high hip. A cropped version defines the middle; a relaxed one is more casual. White sneakers for day, brown boots for more fall. A belt bag worn crossbody keeps your hands free without adding anything at the hip. Neutral dresses in black, olive or oatmeal go with blue denim.
19. Long Coat And Flared Jeans Fall Outfit

A long coat with flared jeans has drama but takes no effort. Start with high-rise flares that fit smoothly through the waist and hip and widen below the knee. A fitted turtleneck or bodysuit on top balances the flare. The coat should reach the knee or lower and fit at the shoulders; a long coat that's too big looks like a blanket. Heeled ankle boots lift the hem off the ground, and the jeans should be hemmed for those boots specifically. A structured shoulder bag and a soft scarf. Camel or charcoal looks best with dark denim.
20. Matching Knit Set Fall Outfit

A matching knit set is loungewear that looks like you got dressed. A ribbed sweater with wide-leg pants, or a cardigan with a knit midi skirt. I'd check two things before buying: the waistband shouldn't roll when you sit, and the knit should be heavy enough to drape rather than cling, because a thin knit shows every seam underneath. A fitted tank under the sweater lets you strip down when the afternoon warms up. Sleek sneakers or loafers. A structured tote contrasts with the soft fabric. Cream or charcoal sets layer under a trench or wool coat in a related shade.
Thigh Rub, Static and Tights Under Skirts
Eight of these looks are dresses or skirts, and the questions I get about them are rarely about the dress itself. They're about what happens underneath on a long day.
Thigh chafe
Thighs that touch rub raw under a skirt after a few hours of walking, even in cool weather. A pair of thin slip shorts or anti-chafe bands solves it, and an anti-chafe balm works if you'd rather wear nothing extra. Opaque tights also stop the rub once it's cold enough for them.
Static cling
Knit dresses over tights and slip skirts in dry indoor heat cling and ride up. A cotton or natural-fiber slip reduces it, and a light mist of anti-static spray on the inside of the skirt helps for the day.
Tights that stay up
If tights roll down at the waist or the crotch sits low, they're too small. Go up one size from what the chart says and choose a wide, flat waistband. They'll stay put and won't dig into the soft knit dress above them.
Test Every Outfit Sitting Down
Not one of these outfits is about hiding your shape. They come from a few comfortable proportions and dependable layers: jeans in two cuts, a couple of knits, boots, one skirt, one dress and a coat that fits at the shoulders. Start with the outfits that use what's already hanging in your closet, then add color or texture through one new piece. And always test an outfit sitting, walking and reaching before you decide it works. A waistband that digs in at the table will ruin the day no matter how it looked standing in the mirror.
