Fall is the season I enjoy dressing for most, because the weather finally asks for layers. The outfits below are complete, from jacket to shoes to bag, so you're not left holding a nice sweater and wondering what goes with it. There's casual denim, work-ready tailoring, weekend clothes and a few dressier ideas. Most of them use different proportions, so you'll find versions for short and tall frames, straight and curvy figures, warm and cold climates. Use colors you already own, adjust fabric weight for your weather, and repeat favorite pieces across several looks.

Front Tuck, Half Tuck or Full Tuck
Half of these outfits rely on a tuck, and the right one depends on the sweater and on your torso. A tuck is how a loose top shows where your waist is. Done badly, it creates a lump at the front or a puff at the back that adds width instead of taking it away.
- Full tuck: for fine knits, tees and shirts. Tuck all the way round, then lift your arms once so a little fabric relaxes over the waistband.
- Front tuck: for medium sweaters. Tuck only the center front, a few inches wide, and let the sides and back hang.
- Half tuck: tuck one side just ahead of the hip bone. It suits short torsos because it shows the waist without cutting you in half.
- No tuck: for chunky cable knits and anything longer than your hip bone. Choose a shorter sweater instead of forcing it.
A tuck only works if the trousers or skirt have a defined waistband. Elastic pull-on waists tend to fold over under a tucked knit. And thinner knits stay tucked; heavy ones push back out within an hour.
1. Blazer And Straight Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

A blazer with straight jeans is the outfit I'd build first in any fall wardrobe. Under it, a fitted white tee, light turtleneck or silky blouse in a neutral; on top, a camel, brown, navy or plaid blazer. The jeans need a clean hem that just touches the top of the shoe. Loafers make it work-appropriate and white sneakers make it a weekend outfit. If you're petite, a blazer that ends at the hip keeps the jacket from swallowing your legs. Curvier figures often do better with a softly shaped waist and jeans with a little stretch. A thin scarf adds warmth without bulk.
2. Oversized Sweater And Wide Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

An oversized sweater with wide jeans is comfortable, but it's the easiest outfit on this list to get wrong. Too much volume top and bottom and you lose your shape completely. I keep the sweater ending at the hip, never mid-thigh, and tuck just the front so the waistband shows. Oatmeal, burgundy, forest green or chocolate knits all go with dark indigo, faded black or mid-blue denim. Streamlined ankle boots or retro sneakers, a compact bag and small hoops keep it neat. If the knit is chunky, skip extra layers. A thin long-sleeve underneath and a wool coat handle real cold.
3. Trench Coat And Black Trousers Fall Outfit

A trench over black trousers is the simplest work outfit I know for unpredictable weather. A light crewneck or striped knit with high-rise black trousers is the base. Beige trench is classic, though olive, navy or dark brown are just as useful and show less dirt at the hem. Loafers, pointed flats or low ankle boots finish it, plus a roomy tote for commuting. Belt the trench to show your waist or leave it open for a long line. Cropped ankle trousers feel less formal than full length. A silk scarf or simple pendant adds a bit of personality.
4. Cardigan And Satin Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

Soft knit and slippery satin look good together because they're so different. Button a fitted cardigan up as a top, or wear a looser one over a camisole. The satin midi skirt can be bronze, burgundy, olive, navy or black. Satin shows every bump, so a thick cardigan should be tucked only at the front or worn open over the skirt rather than stuffed into the waistband. Knee boots under the hem work for cold days and loafers for mild ones. A structured handbag keeps the soft fabrics from reading too casual. Add a fitted long-sleeve under the cardigan when it gets colder.
5. Leather Jacket And Slip Dress Fall Outfit

A leather jacket is what makes a slip dress wearable after summer. Pick a midi slip in black, deep green, a muted floral, rust or chocolate, and a black or brown leather jacket that closes comfortably. If the straps are thin, I put a fitted tee or thin turtleneck underneath, which adds warmth and stops the bra-strap problem. Ankle boots ground it; sleek sneakers make it daytime-friendly. A cropped jacket shows your waist, while a longer straight one gives a looser shape. Sheer or opaque tights stretch this outfit well into late fall.
6. Sweater Dress And Knee High Boots Fall Outfit

A sweater dress takes no effort, so the accessories have to do some work. Choose a ribbed or smooth knit that skims your body. A dress that's too tight shows every line, and one that's too loose looks like a nightshirt. Midi and knee-length both suit knee-high boots in suede or leather. A long wool coat keeps the line long, and a cropped jacket gives more shape at the waist. A belt is optional. Bike shorts or tights underneath stop the knit clinging to bare legs and stop chafing. Neutrals are safe; burgundy, plum, deep teal and olive add color.
7. Denim Jacket And Floral Midi Dress Fall Outfit

A summer floral dress doesn't need to go to the back of the closet in September. The ones that cross over best have a darker background or muted colors. A medium or dark denim jacket and brown ankle boots shift it into fall, while clean sneakers keep it casual. If the dress is loose, a cropped denim jacket shows your waist without a belt. Pull one color from the print for your bag: tan, cognac or burgundy. On cold mornings, tights and a thin thermal underneath make a big difference. Simple hoops or layered necklaces work better than a felt hat for most people.
8. Plaid Shacket And Leggings Fall Outfit

A shacket over leggings is my answer to a cold, busy Saturday. Under the roomy plaid shacket, wear a fitted crewneck, tunic-length tee or light sweater, then thick black leggings. Leggings are the weak point, so I only use opaque, heavyweight ones with a secure waistband. Choose a shacket that covers your hips if you want more coverage. Lace-up boots, trail-style sneakers or leather trainers finish it, with a crossbody and a cap or beanie. If the plaid feels busy, match your shoes and base layer to one color in the pattern; it looks planned rather than thrown on.
9. Barn Jacket And Dark Wash Jeans Fall Outfit

A barn jacket is one of the most practical pieces you can own for fall. Wear an olive, tan, navy or brown one over a striped shirt, crewneck sweater or soft button-down. Dark straight jeans give a crisp contrast to the jacket's relaxed shape. Loafers, riding boots or sturdy ankle boots work, plus a leather belt and structured tote. Before you buy, try it on over the thickest sweater you'll wear; barn jackets are often cut close in the arm. If you're petite, choose one that ends at the upper hip. A longer cut gives more coverage on windy walks.
10. Turtleneck And Pleated Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

Tucking a slim turtleneck into a pleated midi skirt gives a neat waist and lots of movement below it. The knit has to be fine; a bulky turtleneck pushes the pleats out at the hip. Black, cream, charcoal or chocolate tops go with plaid, jewel tones, soft metallics or plain skirts. Knee boots under the hem keep a clean line, and loafers with socks feel preppy. A cropped jacket or tailored coat shouldn't hide the pleats. If you'd rather not emphasize your waist, leave a little of a softer sweater untucked. It works at the office and later at dinner.
11. Monochrome Brown Fall Outfit

Several browns together make a rich outfit without pattern. Start with chocolate trousers or dark brown jeans, then a caramel sweater, mocha turtleneck or tan shirt, and finally a suede jacket, wool coat or blazer in a different tone. The shades don't need to match; a little variation looks deliberate. Dark leather boots and a cognac or espresso bag finish it. Gold jewelry warms the palette, and silver makes it more modern. The trick is varying texture, smooth, ribbed, suede and wool, so each layer stays visible. A cream scarf helps if brown dulls your face.
12. Sweater Vest And Button Down Fall Outfit

A sweater vest gives you warmth on the body without bulky sleeves, which is why I like it for offices that overheat. Pick a crisp white, pale blue or striped shirt and add a plain, cable or subtly patterned vest. Straight trousers make it office-ready, and relaxed jeans make it casual. Let the collar and cuffs show so the layers look deliberate. A big shirt under a vest balloons at the waist, so either choose a slimmer shirt or a shorter vest. Loafers with crew socks or ankle boots, a leather tote and minimal jewelry finish it. On days that start cold and end warm, the vest comes off in seconds.
13. Utility Jacket And Black Jeans Fall Outfit

An olive utility jacket over black jeans is my default for travel days. Under it, a cream sweater, striped long-sleeve or black turtleneck. Straight, slim or wide black jeans all work, so pick by proportion: wide legs want a jacket that ends at the hip, slim legs can carry a longer one. Tan ankle boots or white leather sneakers and a cognac crossbody warm up the dark palette. Pull in the waist drawstring for shape or leave it boxy. Those pockets are tempting, but a phone and keys in each one make the jacket bulge. Use your bag instead.
14. Long Cardigan And Straight Leg Pants Fall Outfit

A long cardigan looks polished only when everything under it is clean and slim. Start with a fitted tank, crewneck tee or fine knit, then ankle-length trousers in black, camel, navy or gray. Matching the top and trousers in one color makes a long line under the cardigan, which is very lengthening. Choose a cardigan that ends around the knee and has some weight; thin ones cling and stretch out at the pockets. If you're under about five foot four, a cardigan that hits just above the knee is easier. Pointed flats, loafers or low boots and a structured tote finish it.
15. Bomber Jacket And Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A bomber jacket with a midi skirt mixes sporty and dressy in a way that works for real days. A plain bomber in black, olive, navy or chocolate over a fitted tee or light sweater, with a straight, pleated, denim or satin midi skirt. Bombers are cropped and gathered at the hem, so they look best with a higher-rise skirt that meets the jacket at your waist. Sneakers keep it casual and ankle boots make it sharper. A compact shoulder bag is better than a big tote, which competes with the jacket's volume. Keep any other layers thin.
16. Double Denim Fall Outfit

Double denim works when the washes are either clearly close or clearly different. A light chambray shirt with dark jeans is the easy version; a dark denim jacket with medium jeans also works. The mistake is two washes that are almost but not quite the same, which looks accidental. Add a white, gray or striped tee if the shirt is open. Brown boots and a leather belt warm it up; black accessories make it sharper. One Western detail is plenty, a tooled belt or a pair of boots. If shirt and jeans are close in color, a belt at the waist separates them. Add a camel coat for warmth.
17. Blazer And Maxi Skirt Fall Outfit

A blazer with a maxi skirt gives coverage and keeps a sharp shape. A fitted knit or plain tee goes under a single-breasted blazer, with a straight, pleated or flowing maxi skirt. Hip-length blazers suit full skirts, while longer blazers suit narrow ones. Hem length is the thing I check first: a maxi skirt should clear the floor with your chosen shoes, or it will collect grit and wet leaves. Pointed boots, loafers or sneakers all work. A belt is optional. Add one noticeable accessory, sculptural earrings or a silk scarf, and a medium shoulder bag.
18. Hoodie And Wool Coat Fall Outfit

A hoodie under a wool coat looks more considered than plain sportswear. Choose a slim hoodie in gray, cream, navy or black, with straight jeans or structured joggers. A long camel, charcoal or navy coat goes over it, with the hood lying flat over the collar. Thick hoodies make coat sleeves tight, so I go for a thinner sweatshirt fabric. Matching the hoodie to the trousers makes a simple base and lets the coat stand out. Leather sneakers or chunky loafers, and a crossbody or tote with little hardware. I wear this for commuting and errands.
19. Knit Polo And Tailored Trousers Fall Outfit

A knit polo with tailored trousers is a softer swap for the blouse and suit. Short sleeves suit early fall and long sleeves the colder weeks. Pleated wide-leg or straight ankle trousers in charcoal, navy, camel or black go with it. Knit polos sit better than piqué ones under a blazer because they drape rather than stand up at the collar. Loafers keep it classic, low heels make it more formal. Match your belt to your shoes, carry a structured tote, and add a light trench or blazer. Leave the collar open or button it higher for more coverage.
20. Suede Jacket And White Jeans Fall Outfit

White jeans in fall work best in cream or soft white, not the bright white you wore in July. Pair them with a fitted knit in black, burgundy, olive, navy or chocolate, then a tan or dark brown suede jacket. Make sure the denim is heavy enough not to show what's underneath; thin white denim is see-through in daylight. Loafers, ankle boots or slim sneakers, a brown bag and a simple belt connect the pieces. For a softer palette, oatmeal knit and a camel jacket look lovely. White jeans and wet sidewalks don't mix, so I'd wear these on dry days only.
Will That Jacket Close Over a Sweater?
Nearly every outfit here layers a jacket over a knit, and most people try jackets on over a tee in a warm store. Then November comes, the sweater goes on, and the jacket won't close or the sleeves bunch at the elbow. I always take the thickest sweater I plan to wear with me when I try on a jacket.
- Shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone, or slightly beyond for relaxed cuts. If it sits inside it, the jacket is too small.
- Arms: reach forward as if you're driving. If the back pulls tight across your shoulder blades, size up.
- Sleeves: they should cover your wrist bone with your arm bent. Sweaters make sleeves feel shorter.
- Closure: button or zip it up over the knit. If it pulls into an X across the front, it's too snug for layering.
Leather and suede jackets stretch a little with wear, but only slightly, and only in width. Denim gives a bit more. Tailored wool blazers don't stretch at all, so if a blazer is tight over a sweater in the fitting room, it will stay that way.
Fall Gets Easier Once Your Jackets Fit Over Your Knits
A good fall wardrobe isn't a big one. It's a set of layers, textures and colors that can be rearranged as the weather changes. Jeans, blazers, sweaters, skirts, dresses and boots turn up in nearly every outfit above, and that repetition is the point. Adapt each look to your climate, routine and shape, and reuse key pieces across several outfits instead of buying new ones. Comfortable fits, useful outerwear and accessories that tie things together will carry you through most crisp fall mornings.
