Autumn is my favorite season to dress men for, because it's the one time of year when layering actually makes sense. Mornings are cold, afternoons are mild, and a jacket, an overshirt or a sweater can go on and come off three times before dinner. The outfits below cover weekends, the office, rugged workwear, streetwear and a few dressier occasions, built from wool, corduroy, denim, suede and canvas in earth tones and plain neutrals. Most of them start from basics you probably own already. The difference is usually one good seasonal layer, sized correctly.

Swapping Three Pieces to Go From Desk to Saturday
The most useful thing I teach men about autumn dressing is that work and weekend outfits can share most of their pieces. Keep the base the same and change only the layer, the trouser and the shoe.
- The top layer: a blazer or merino quarter-zip for the office becomes a chore jacket, overshirt or denim jacket on Saturday.
- The trouser: wool trousers or pressed chinos during the week; dark jeans or cords on the weekend.
- The shoe: loafers or derbies for work; suede boots or leather sneakers for errands and walks.
- Keep the middle layer: an Oxford shirt, a fine crewneck or a plain heavy tee carries over from Monday to Sunday without looking like you wore the same clothes.
Build around two or three base colors, such as navy, brown and gray, and nearly every piece in this list will work with every other. That's how a small autumn wardrobe ends up feeling much bigger than it is.
1. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Flannel Shirt And Jeans

Flannel over a heavy tee is the most familiar autumn outfit there is, and it still works. I'd wear a forest green or rust plaid open over a heavyweight white or cream T-shirt; a thin tee wrinkles and bunches under the flannel, a heavy one hangs straight. Straight-leg blue jeans and brown suede boots finish it. Size the flannel so the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder with the tee underneath. On a cold afternoon a canvas jacket goes over the top.
2. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Chore Jacket And Chinos

A chore jacket is the piece I recommend most to men who find blazers stiff. Look for sturdy cotton canvas in navy, olive or tobacco, and wear it over a gray sweatshirt or plain long-sleeve tee. Stone or dark brown chinos keep it presentable. Leather sneakers or desert boots finish it. Canvas starts out stiff and softens with wear, so expect the first few weeks to feel boxy. Keep the colors muted and let the pockets and the fabric do the talking. It suits commuting, campus and a relaxed office.
3. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Denim Jacket And Black Jeans

Double denim works when the two pieces don't match. A medium or dark indigo jacket over black straight-leg jeans gives clear contrast, while two identical blues read like a set. Put a charcoal hoodie or heavyweight tee underneath. Black leather boots keep it sharp; white leather sneakers lighten it for early fall. When I fit a denim jacket, I have the client wear the hoodie he plans to layer, because rigid denim has almost no give across the back. Add a gray beanie once it gets cold.
4. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Bomber Jacket And Trousers

A bomber looks grown-up when it's worn with tailored trousers instead of joggers. Choose a clean one in dark olive, navy or brown suede, without patches or heavy hardware. Under it goes a fine-gauge crewneck in cream or gray, and below that pleated wool-blend trousers with a straight or slightly tapered leg. The ribbed hem should land at the waistband; a bomber that sits below the belt line looks borrowed. Minimal leather sneakers or dark suede loafers both fit. It moves well from a creative office to dinner.
5. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Cardigan And Relaxed Jeans

A textured cardigan over a tee with relaxed jeans is a soft, modern weekend outfit. Pick a medium-weight cardigan in dark green or oatmeal and leave it partly unbuttoned. Relaxed straight jeans keep the knit from looking traditional. Retro sneakers or leather loafers with ribbed socks finish it. The mistake I see most is layering a bulky cardigan over a thick shirt, which doubles the bulk at the chest and arms. Keep the layer underneath thin and let the knit be the warm piece.
6. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Quarter-Zip Sweater And Chinos

A quarter-zip is my go-to when a man needs something smarter than a sweatshirt with no effort. Merino is the best fiber for it; it's warm, thin and doesn't trap heat indoors like heavy cotton can. Wear navy or charcoal over a white or pale blue Oxford with a bit of collar showing, and pair it with khaki or gray chinos and brown Chelsea boots. The knit should be close to the body without pulling at the chest. A light trench handles wind and rain on top. It's the most reliable business-casual outfit in this list.
7. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Waxed Jacket And Corduroy Pants

A waxed jacket is built for wet, windy days, and it ages well. Wear an olive or dark brown one over a brushed cotton shirt or roll-neck with tan or chocolate cords and rugged leather boots. Straight-leg trousers balance the boxy cut of the jacket better than slim ones. A checked scarf adds pattern if everything else is solid. Waxed cotton needs re-proofing every so often, usually once a season for regular wear, and it can leave a slight residue on light-colored clothes. I keep cream sweaters away from a freshly waxed jacket.
8. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Overshirt And Cargo Pants

An overshirt is the right outer layer for early autumn, when a coat is too much. Choose a substantial wool or brushed cotton one in charcoal or olive and layer it over a fitted long-sleeve tee. Cargo pants work if the pockets lie flat; big bellowed pockets add width at the thigh and look sloppy. Trail sneakers or leather hiking boots finish it. The overshirt should button comfortably over the tee but stop around the hip; if it reaches mid-thigh, it's a coat. It's my travel and errand outfit.
9. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Trench Coat And Knitwear

A knee-length trench makes plain autumn clothes look considered. I'd pick beige or stone and wear it over a fine crewneck and white tee or Oxford, with dark jeans or wool trousers. Chelsea boots or loafers keep it polished. Carry a leather or canvas bag rather than a gym backpack, which crushes the trench's shoulders. When trying one on, wear the sweater you'll layer underneath and check that the shoulder line stays clean when you reach forward. It's the best thing you can wear on a rainy commute.
10. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Leather Jacket And Dark Denim

Leather jacket and dark denim is about as dependable a pairing as menswear has. A café racer or plain biker in black or dark brown over a heavy gray tee or black knit keeps it simple. Dark indigo or black jeans should be comfortable through the thigh, and boots should match the jacket's tone. New leather is stiff around the elbows and shoulders and takes a few weeks to shape to you, so buy it to fit closely but not tightly. Skip distressed jeans and extra metal; the jacket is enough.
11. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Crewneck Sweater And Oxford Shirt

A crewneck over an Oxford is the smart-casual outfit I trust across ages and builds. Choose a navy or burgundy merino or soft cotton sweater and a white or pale blue Oxford, with the collar laid neatly above the neckline. Tuck the shirt in, since a shirt tail hanging below the sweater looks like an accident. Charcoal or stone trousers and brown derbies or suede loafers finish it. An unstructured blazer or light topcoat goes on if you need it. Office, family meal, weekend lunch: it covers all three.
12. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Hoodie And Wool Coat

A plain hoodie under a wool overcoat is a modern combination that only works if the coat is roomy enough. I size the coat with the hoodie on, checking that the shoulders don't strain and the hood sits flat outside the collar. A mid-weight hoodie is essential; thick fleece pushes the coat out of shape. Gray, cream or muted green hoodies under a camel or charcoal coat look best. Straight black jeans and leather sneakers or chunky derbies keep it clean. Add a beanie on cold days.
13. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Puffer Vest And Flannel Shirt

A puffer vest warms your core while leaving your arms free, which is why I like it for chores and outdoor weekends. Wear a slim navy or olive vest over a checked flannel, with dark jeans or canvas pants and suede boots or trail sneakers. A thin, low-loft vest layers better than a thick one, which turns the torso into a block. On cold mornings a thermal tee under the flannel handles the chill, and by afternoon the vest comes off. It's a practical outfit for a day when a coat would be too warm by lunch.
14. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Turtleneck And Blazer

A fine turtleneck under an unstructured blazer replaces shirt and tie without looking underdressed. Black, cream or dark green knit under a herringbone or quiet check blazer, with charcoal or brown trousers, gives depth without formality. Polished loafers or Chelsea boots finish it. The knit has to be thin; a thick roll-neck bunches at the lapels and makes the jacket sit away from your neck. It's what I'd wear to an evening meal or a gallery opening where a suit feels like too much.
15. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Suede Jacket And Neutral Trousers

Suede in tobacco or tan looks natural next to autumn colors. Choose a trucker or shirt-jacket cut and wear it over a cream knit polo or light charcoal sweater, with stone or navy trousers. I avoid shoes in the exact shade of the jacket; a slightly darker brown loafer or Chelsea boot gives depth. Spray suede with a protector before the first wear, and if you get caught in rain, let it dry naturally and brush the nap back up. It suits smart weekends and a business-casual office.
16. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Rugby Shirt And Work Pants

A rugby shirt adds color and stripes without much effort. Look for a heavy cotton one, since thin versions lose their collar shape quickly. Navy-and-burgundy or cream-and-green stripes over straight canvas work pants in tan or olive keep it casual. The sturdy pants balance the bold top. Retro runners or leather work boots both work. Wear it slightly relaxed rather than tight. On colder days a plain denim jacket goes over it, as long as it doesn't add another pattern.
17. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Sweater Vest And Pleated Trousers

The sweater vest is back for good reason: it adds warmth through the body without bulky sleeves. Wear a solid vest over a relaxed Oxford in white or ecru with pleated trousers in a straight or gently wide leg. Pleats give real comfort when you sit and help the trousers drape. Loafers or suede derbies with visible socks finish it. The vest should end at the waistband so no strip of shirt shows between them. A light mac coat completes it outdoors.
18. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Harrington Jacket And Loafers

A Harrington is a neat, waist-length jacket that pairs best with smart-casual pieces. Wear navy or tan over a knit polo or fine crewneck, with pressed chinos or pleated trousers that sit cleanly at the waist. Brown suede loafers with ribbed socks finish it. Because the jacket stops at the waist, it draws a horizontal line there, so I keep the trousers trim at the hem; extra fabric bunching at the shoe makes the legs look short. It's a sharp choice for a casual office or weekend lunch.
19. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Peacoat And Chelsea Boots

A navy peacoat is the most dependable cold-weather coat I know. Wear it over a cream fisherman sweater or a burgundy roll-neck so there's contrast near your face, with dark denim or charcoal trousers and leather Chelsea boots. The coat should end around the upper thigh and button without pulling across the chest; try it on with the thickest sweater you plan to wear, because heavy melton wool has no stretch. A lightly structured cut layers better than a tight military fit.
20. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Field Jacket And Knit Polo

A field jacket over a knit polo moves the jacket out of hiking territory. Choose olive or dark brown, and a polo in cream or muted blue, with the collar tucked inside the jacket. Dark chinos and suede desert boots keep it tidy. If you need warmth, a thin undershirt is better than a sweatshirt, which distorts the jacket's lines and makes the pockets stick out. It's a smart travel outfit and works for a casual office.
21. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Shacket And Monochrome Basics

Monochrome needs texture to avoid looking flat, and a shacket is the easiest way to add it. Build the base with a charcoal or cream tee and trousers in the same tone, then add a wool-blend shacket a shade lighter or darker. I like brushed wool over smooth cotton, or a textured overshirt over crisp dark denim. Tonal sneakers or leather boots finish it. Keep logos and accessories to a minimum so the outfit reads as one clear shape.
22. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Fair Isle Sweater And Corduroy Trousers

Fair Isle brings pattern and warmth, but it gets busy fast, so I choose knits with two or three colors rather than six. Wear it over a plain tee or Oxford and pull your trouser color from the sweater: rust cords with a rust-and-cream knit, for example. Suede boots or leather derbies finish it. For outerwear, a solid chore coat or plain topcoat stays out of the pattern's way. Fair Isle knits are often wool and can pill at the underarms, so a quick pass with a fabric comb keeps them looking new.
23. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Blazer And Dark Jeans

Blazer and dark jeans sits right between tailoring and casual. Choose an unstructured blazer in navy or a quiet herringbone, worn over a white Oxford or a fine knit, with dark indigo jeans that have little fading. Suede loafers or derbies suit it. The blazer should be a bit softer than a suit jacket; a sharp, padded suit coat with jeans looks like a suit missing its trousers. Add a pocket square only if the setting calls for it. It's my default for conferences and business-casual dinners.
24. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Technical Jacket And Wide Trousers

A technical jacket is the right top layer for autumn days that change hourly. I'd choose a clean waterproof or wind-resistant shell in slate or navy, over a merino sweater or simple hoodie. Wide or relaxed trousers give movement and modern proportions, but they need the right length; a hem that drags will soak up rain. Trail sneakers or waterproof leather shoes finish it. Keep bright colors to one small accent at most. It's built for commuting and wet weekends.
25. Men’s Autumn Outfit With Camel Coat And Tonal Layers

A camel coat over tonal layers is the most refined outfit here. Underneath, I build in shades of cream, oatmeal and chocolate: a fine crewneck or knit polo with tailored wool trousers or clean chinos. Dark brown Chelsea boots or loafers anchor the lighter palette. Choose a scarf a shade off from the coat so the outfit keeps some depth. The coat should fall near the knee and sit smoothly over the knit. Camel shows marks more than navy, so a lint brush and spot cleaning keep it looking sharp all season.
Sizing a Jacket for the Sweater Under It
Most autumn jackets are bought in a T-shirt and worn over a sweater, and that's where the fit goes wrong. When I size outerwear, I ask the man to wear the thickest layer he plans to put under it.
Then I check three things. Reach both arms forward: if the back pulls tight or the sleeves ride up past the wrist bone, it's too small. Button it fully: the fabric shouldn't form an X across the chest. Look at the shoulder seam: it should sit at the edge of your shoulder, not hang down the arm, which is the sign of a jacket bought too big to compensate. Stiff fabrics like rigid denim, waxed cotton and melton wool have no give, so size with them more carefully than with knits or soft twill.
Making Wool Knits Last Past One Season
Nearly every outfit here depends on a sweater, and wool knits are easy to ruin. Pilling is normal where fabric rubs, under the arms and at the sides where a bag sits; a fabric comb or sweater shaver removes it without thinning the knit.
Fold sweaters rather than hanging them, because a hanger stretches the shoulders into points over time. Air them between wears instead of washing after every outing; wool resists odor well. When they do need a wash, use cool water and a wool detergent, press out the water in a towel and dry them flat. A hot tumble dryer is the fastest way to shrink a merino crewneck down a size.
One Layer Can Change the Whole Week
A good autumn wardrobe is mostly basics plus a few layers that work hard. Start with what you own: dark jeans, chinos, plain tees, sweaters and sturdy shoes. Then add one seasonal piece, like a chore jacket, a trench or a wool overcoat, and size it to go over the thickest thing you'll wear underneath. Fit and fabric weight matter more than following trends. When each layer works alone and together, getting dressed on a cold Monday or a slow Saturday becomes a lot simpler.
