A couples costume only works if both of you are happy in it, because the moment one person takes off their half, the joke falls apart. Here are thirty of my favorite creative pairings: food puns, nostalgic characters, old-Hollywood spooky looks and simple DIY ideas. For each one I've laid out the clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes, and where you can swap roles, change colors or add layers for a cold night, a long walk or anyone who can't stand itchy fabric. Most of them come from your closet, a thrift store or a few craft supplies, not from a sewing marathon.

How Two Costumes Read as One Pair
Most couples costumes fail at the same spot: each half looks fine alone, but standing together they don't look like a pair. I fix that before anyone buys a thing.
- Repeat one color on both of you. A gold belt on the god and gold liner on the goddess, or a red ribbon on the rabbit that matches the magician's bow tie, links two different outfits.
- Match the effort. If one of you is in a full gown and wig and the other is in jeans and a hat, it reads as one costume plus a friend.
- Keep the scale similar. Two headpieces of about the same height look planned; one huge one next to nothing looks lopsided in photos.
- Carry one shared prop, held between you. The handbook, the teacup or the treasure map tells people the two of you belong together.
Then stand side by side in front of a mirror, or take a quick phone photo from across the room. If you can't tell it's a pair from there, add a matching detail rather than more stuff.
1. Barbie And Ken Roller-Skating Costume

Barbie and Ken's roller-skating outfits are all neon and nerve. One of you wears a hot-pink unitard or a fitted top with matching bike shorts, a bright visor, knee pads and a blond ponytail wig. The other wears a patterned neon vest, bright shorts, wristbands and a short blond wig. I love the look of real skates, but I'd only wear them for photos; on stairs and crowded sidewalks they're a sprained wrist waiting to happen. Colorful sneakers with striped socks keep the spirit. Pink-and-blue eye makeup and a couple of water bottles as props finish the pair.
2. Morticia And Gomez Addams Costume

Morticia and Gomez are the pair I suggest when you want glamour and clothes you'll wear again. Morticia needs a long black dress with flared sleeves, sleek black hair, pale foundation, defined brows and deep berry lipstick. Gomez wears a dark pinstripe suit, a white shirt, a bow tie, combed-back hair and a thin mustache. Costume mustaches peel at the corners once you start talking, so I press them on with a dab of spirit gum or lash glue rather than the sticky backing. Pointed flats, loafers or low boots for both, and a single red rose between you.
3. Glinda And Elphaba Costume

Glinda and Elphaba are built on contrast: shimmering pink against structured black. Glinda wears a full pink dress, crystal-style hair clips, soft curls, rosy makeup and silver flats, with a sparkly wand. Elphaba needs a long black dress or layered skirt, a fitted jacket, a pointed hat, green face makeup, dark braided hair and comfortable black boots, plus a light broom. Glinda's dress is where the budget goes, and a thrifted pink formal with an extra tulle petticoat underneath gets the volume cheaply. Because the silhouettes are so different, both of you get an equally detailed costume.
4. Beetlejuice And Lydia Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia mix striped chaos with gothic romance. He wears a black-and-white striped suit, a white shirt, dark boots, tousled pale hair and smoky gray around the eyes. She wears the red layered dress with a matching veil, black ankle boots, dark eye makeup and teased black hair. That full red dress is a lot to sit and drive in, so for a long night I'd swap in a red midi with tulle sleeves and a short veil. Cover a piece of cardboard in aged paper for the handbook you carry together. Keep the makeup theatrical but clean.
5. Mario And Princess Peach Costume

Mario and Princess Peach bring cheerful video-game color with almost no building. Mario wears denim overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, a red cap, brown work boots and a neat mustache. Peach needs a pink midi or maxi dress, white gloves, a gold crown headband, blue earrings, soft blond curls and pink flats. Hand-letter the M on a white felt circle and stitch it to the cap; glue tends to let go when the cap gets pulled on and off. A plush mushroom or a cardboard star is the shared prop, and thermals fit under both on a cold night.
6. Shrek And Fiona Costume

Shrek and Fiona is a funny pairing with layers that actually keep you warm. Shrek wears brown trousers, a cream tunic, a textured brown vest, green face makeup, a bald cap or ear headband and brown boots. Fiona wears a long green velvet-style dress, a braided red wig, green makeup, small ears and dark green flats. Use water-based paint, set it with powder, and give it a few minutes before putting on the tunic, or the neckline goes green. Soft foam ears on a headband beat a tight mask. A plush donkey or a small hand-painted swamp sign is the prop.
7. Coraline And Wybie Costume

Coraline and Wybie turn a rainy-day story into a costume that handles rain. Coraline needs a yellow raincoat, a striped shirt, dark leggings, yellow rain boots, a short blue wig, a small blue hair clip and a few freckles, plus a plush black cat. Wybie wears dark jeans, a black shirt, a reflective vest or dark jacket, gloves, high-tops and a curly dark wig. Never cover your eyes with buttons. Oversized button-shaped glasses nod to the story and let you see where you're walking. Blue wigs often look harsh, so I trim the bangs a little shorter and choppier than they come.
8. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Costume

Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf keep things storybook and family-friendly. She wears a white blouse, a red skirt or simple dress, a hooded red cape, braids, rosy cheeks and black lace-up boots, with a wicker basket lined in checked fabric. He wears gray trousers, a fuzzy gray sweater, soft ears, a removable tail, gray face makeup and painted whiskers instead of a mask. Fuzzy sweaters shed onto a red cape, so I'd go over the cape with a lint roller before photos. Thermal leggings under her dress and a gray jacket over his sweater handle cold weather.
9. Peter Pan And Tinker Bell Costume

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell look colorful without heavy accessories. Peter wears green leggings or trousers, a belted green tunic, a pointed felt cap, tousled hair and brown ankle boots. Tink needs a light green dress, sheer wings, a neat blond bun, shimmery eyes and green ballet flats. A pouch of paper confetti is the fairy dust, but keep it closed indoors because nobody's host wants to vacuum glitter for a week. I cut leaf points along the tunic hem with pinking shears, which stops felt from fraying. Choose small wings that won't snag doorways.
10. Alice And Mad Hatter Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter are a tea party in two outfits. Alice wears a blue dress with a white apron, white tights, a black headband, soft blond curls and Mary Janes. The Hatter needs patterned trousers, a colorful waistcoat, a bright jacket, a big decorated top hat, orange curls and lace-up boots. Clashing patterns look intentional when the same two or three colors repeat across the hat, bow tie and socks, so lay them out together before you commit. A lightweight teacup and a fabric pocket watch are easy to carry, and vivid shadow keeps his face friendly rather than creepy.
11. Velma And Shaggy Costume

Velma and Shaggy are about the easiest pair to thrift. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red shoes, a short brown bob wig and square glasses, with natural makeup. Shaggy needs a loose green tee, brown pants, messy light-brown hair and dark sneakers. The colors do nearly all the work, so get the exact orange and green rather than close enough. A plush dog or a cardboard magnifying glass ties the two together. Both fit over thermals for outdoor plans, and few last-minute couples costumes read faster from a distance.
12. Daphne And Fred Costume

Daphne and Fred are the neater half of the mystery team. Daphne wears a purple dress, matching tights, a green neck scarf, purple shoes, a red wig and a lavender headband, with soft lilac eye makeup and peach lipstick. Fred needs blue trousers, a white sweater or long-sleeve polo with a blue collar, an orange neck scarf, blond hair and brown loafers. Neck scarves slide around all night, so tie them in a small square knot and tuck the ends, or hold the knot with a safety pin at the back. On cold nights, pick a heavier knit dress and sweater rather than hiding both under coats.
13. Cowboy And Cowgirl Costume

A cowboy and cowgirl pair comes almost entirely from everyday clothes. One of you wears a plaid shirt, bootcut jeans, a suede-style vest, a cowboy hat, a bandana and brown boots. The other wears a denim skirt or jeans, a Western shirt, a fringed vest, a cowgirl hat, braids and ankle boots. Matching belt buckles and bandanas in two colors that work together make the outfits look planned. Leave toy guns at home; a coiled rope, a sheriff badge or a hobbyhorse is the safer prop. Break in any new boots for a week first, because Western heels rub in new places.
14. Astronaut And Alien Costume

The astronaut and the alien give each person a clear role. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, a silver belt, mission-style patches, white sneakers and a clear helmet-style headband, not a real helmet that fogs up and blocks your view. The alien wears a metallic green dress or top and leggings, silver boots, green makeup, a bright wig and an antenna headband. A light cardboard control panel or an inflatable planet is the shared prop. I add strips of reflective tape to both costumes, partly for the look and mostly so drivers see you after dark.
15. Bee And Beekeeper Costume

A bee and a beekeeper read clearly even from across a room. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top, a black skirt or pants, striped tights, sheer wings, an antenna headband and black sneakers, with yellow shadow and a neat bun. The beekeeper needs cream trousers, a white or beige utility jacket, gloves, sturdy boots and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh around the edge. Use tulle or netting for the mesh and keep it pinned up off the face until photos, because looking through it all night is like wearing sunglasses indoors. Skip real honey.
16. Butterfly And Butterfly Catcher Costume

A butterfly and butterfly catcher is a garden theme with a built-in chase. The butterfly wears a fitted black top with a bright tulle skirt or colored trousers, patterned wings, antennae, black boots and eye makeup that matches the wings, with two high buns for the antenna shape. The catcher wears khaki shorts or cargo pants, a field shirt, hiking boots, a sun hat and binoculars, plus a compact mesh net. Pin a few paper specimens or embroidered insect patches to the shirt. Choose one accent color, blue, orange or purple, and repeat it on both of you so the pair looks connected.
17. Peanut Butter And Jelly Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is a joke anyone gets in a second. Peanut butter wears tan, and jelly wears purple or red. Each of you pins a large felt bread slice to the front of a sweatshirt or tunic, with clear printed labels. Felt letters glued to polyester fleece peel within an hour, so I stitch around the edges with a loose running stitch or use fabric glue and let it cure overnight. Matching leggings, sneakers and headbands with tiny felt sandwiches finish it. Bring a foam knife or spoon only if the venue allows soft props.
18. Salt And Pepper Shaker Costume

Salt and pepper shakers are clean and graphic. One of you wears all white and the other all black, in tees, joggers, leggings or simple dresses. Add big felt letters, S and P, on the front, and make rounded shaker hats from light silver cardstock with dots painted on top. Cardstock hats crush in a crowd, so I line mine with a layer of thin craft foam to keep the shape. White and black sneakers carry the monochrome down to the floor. Silver liner on both of you ties it together. It's cheap and quick, and the hats and letters say everything.
19. Tooth Fairy And Dentist Costume

A tooth fairy and a dentist is fantasy meets day job. The fairy wears a white or pale-blue dress, sheer wings, silver flats, a sparkly headband, luminous makeup and soft curls, carrying a big foam toothbrush or a star wand with a tooth on top. The dentist wears clean scrubs, a white coat, protective glasses, a name badge and comfortable sneakers, plus a big cardboard tooth or a craft-made dental mirror. Keep it playful rather than clinical. Shared silver and blue details bring the two together. It goes down well at work parties, where nobody wants anything gory.
20. Gardener And Flower Costume

A gardener and a flower suit a daytime party. The gardener wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, garden gloves, rubber boots and a floppy sun hat, with freckles and a small watering can. The flower wears a green dress or a green top with leggings, green shoes, leafy wrist cuffs and a big petal headpiece around the face. Build the petals from felt or foam on a headband, and keep them short at the sides, because long petals block your peripheral vision. Match the eye makeup to the petal color and pull your hair into a low bun or braid under the headpiece.
21. Bob Ross And Happy Tree Costume

Bob Ross and a happy tree is a sweet joke with simple materials. Bob wears jeans, a pale button-up, brown shoes, a curly brown wig and a soft beard, holding a clean palette and a wide brush with no wet paint. The tree wears a brown top and trousers, green sneakers, leafy felt garlands and a light green canopy headpiece, with green and gold shadow and fabric leaves pinned into the hair. Curly costume wigs mat fast, so separate the curls with your fingers rather than a brush. A couple of small plush woodland animals in the branches make people smile.
22. Magician And Rabbit Costume

The magician and the rabbit is classic stage style with a punch line. The magician wears black trousers, a white shirt, a fitted black blazer, a red bow tie, a cape, polished loafers and a tall top hat, with neat hair and defined eyes. The rabbit wears a white sweater with white pants or a simple white dress, soft ears, a fluffy tail, a pink nose, whiskers and white sneakers. A red ribbon at the rabbit's neck matches the bow tie. Capes and crowded rooms don't mix well, so I cut the magician's to hip length. Oversized cardboard cards make a better prop than anything sharp.
23. Pirate Captain And Mermaid Costume

A pirate captain and a mermaid is ocean adventure with sparkle. The pirate wears black trousers, a loose white shirt, a fitted vest, a wide belt, a long coat, a striped head scarf and tall boots, with smoky eyes, tousled hair and a rolled treasure map. Skip swords. The mermaid wears a sequined scale skirt, a fitted teal or purple top, pearls, wavy hair, glittery eyes and metallic flats. A true fishtail skirt makes stairs nearly impossible, so choose one cut with enough room to take a full stride. Repeat gold and turquoise across both outfits, and carry a shell purse.
24. Greek God And Goddess Costume

A Greek god and goddess use flowing fabric and gold. Both of you start with white tunics, dresses or draped tops over shorts, skirts or trousers, then add gold belts, leafy headbands, arm cuffs and light capes in colors that sit well together. One carries a golden sun disc and the other a cluster of artificial clouds or stars. For draping, a cotton or jersey sheet pinned at the shoulders behaves much better than slippery satin, which slides off all night. Soft curls or braids and gold liner finish it. Keep it to theatrical myth and avoid symbols tied to real religious practice.
25. Sun And Moon Costume

A sun and a moon is a celestial pair in gold, silver and midnight blue. The sun wears a gold dress or gold shirt with trousers, metallic shoes, warm bright eye makeup and a headband of light golden rays. The moon wears navy or silver, silver boots, cool makeup and a crescent headpiece, with star clips in dark hair or a deep-blue wig. Glowing battery lanterns or cloud-shaped purses add atmosphere. Make sure every light is enclosed and easy to switch off. The rays are the fragile part, so I cut them from craft foam rather than card so they bend back when bumped.
26. Storm Cloud And Rainbow Costume

A storm cloud and a rainbow turn bad weather into a joke. The cloud wears a gray sweatshirt, gray leggings or trousers, silver sneakers and a fluffy headpiece made from light polyester batting, with blue felt raindrops hanging on short ribbons and teased gray hair. The rainbow wears a striped multicolor dress or top and pants, colorful sneakers, rainbow shadow and a headband with white felt clouds, plus a small sun-shaped purse. Batting compresses in damp air, so fluff it again with your fingers before photos. Keep the raindrop ribbons short or they knot together within an hour.
27. Tourist And Statue Costume

A tourist and a statue is a costume you perform. The tourist wears cargo shorts, a loud printed shirt, sneakers, sunglasses, a sun hat and a crossbody bag, with a paper map and a camera. The statue dresses entirely in gray or metallic, in a draped dress, suit or long coat, with matching shoes and gloves, skin-safe gray face paint, and temporary spray or a gray wig. Gray hair spray transfers to everything you lean on, so wear a scarf when you're not posing. A small foam pedestal panel at the waist helps the illusion. It only works if the gray is consistent from head to toe.
28. Retro Aerobics Instructor Costume

Retro aerobics instructors double the energy. Both of you wear bright leotards or fitted tanks over leggings or bike shorts, with contrasting leg warmers, sweatbands, fanny packs and supportive white sneakers. High side ponytails, curls or fluffy wigs, and vivid blue, pink or purple shadow. Give each person a different neon combination so you look coordinated without being identical. Leotards are hard to get out of in a small bathroom, so I'd choose a tank and bike shorts if you'll be out for hours. Foam dumbbells or a rolled mat for props, and it's made for a dance floor.
29. Ghost Bride And Groom Costume

A ghost bride and groom can be haunting and elegant without any gore. The bride wears a thrifted white or pale-gray dress, a soft veil, pearls, gray flats and a loosely waved white or silver wig, with pale foundation, cool shadow and a muted lip. The groom wears a gray or black suit, a dusty vest, pale makeup, silvered hair and dark shoes. Brush a little gray eyeshadow or cornstarch onto his lapels for the dusty look; it brushes off afterward. Use cobwebs sparingly, carry dried-looking silk flowers and a vintage-style invitation, and keep any torn hem well off the floor.
30. Time Traveler And Clock Costume

A time traveler and a clock mix vintage clothes with a handmade centerpiece. The traveler wears a brown vest, high-waisted trousers or a long skirt, a white blouse, a tailored coat, lace-up boots and brass goggles resting on a hat, with tidy curls and a cardboard journal. The clock wears black or gold with a large clock face on the torso, metallic shoes, gear accessories and gold makeup, plus a round headpiece with small Roman numerals. Make the clock face from foam board, not cardboard, and keep it narrow enough for doorways and chairs. Together the two tell a clear story.
Felt, Foam and Cardstock: What Holds Up
Many of the pun costumes here, peanut butter and jelly, salt and pepper, the clock, the sun and moon, are built from craft materials. Each one behaves differently once you're moving through a party.
- Felt is easy to cut and doesn't fray, but glue alone rarely holds it to stretchy or fleecy fabric. Stitch it, or use a fabric glue and let it cure overnight.
- Craft foam bends without creasing, which is why I use it for rays, petals and shaker hats. Hot glue holds it indoors but goes brittle in cold air.
- Cardstock and cardboard look crisp but crush, curl in damp weather and catch on door frames. Line them with foam or keep them small.
- Foam board is stiff, light and flat, which makes it right for big panels like a clock face. Score it gently rather than bending it.
When One of You Doesn't Like Dressing Up
It's common for one half of a couple to love costumes and the other to tolerate them. Give the reluctant one the half that's closest to normal clothes: Gomez's suit, Fred's sweater, the tourist, the dentist, Bob Ross's shirt and jeans. Let them skip makeup if they want, and put the face paint and the headpiece on the partner who's excited. The pairing still reads, and nobody spends the night counting the minutes until they can change.
Two People, One Joke, Shoes You Can Dance In
The best couples costume is one you can both wear comfortably and explain in five words. The ones above run from character pairings to puns, nostalgic throwbacks and polished spooky looks. Think about the venue, the weather, how far you'll walk and how many hours you'll be in it before you pick. Test the makeup and the headpieces at home, and swap any shoe or mask that hurts. Roles, colors and silhouettes can all change to suit you. One shared color, matching makeup and a single light prop will make even a thrifted pair look planned.
