You don't need a studio wardrobe department to make a heroine people recognise. Most of the women below come together from leggings, fitted tops, boots, a cape and a few craft-store details, and I've written each one the way I'd actually build it at my sewing table: base, hair or wig, makeup, accessories and shoes I'd trust for a full evening. There are comic icons, animated favourites, cosmic characters and some very closet-friendly options. Adjust hems, layers and heel height for the weather and the party, and swap anything I suggest for a piece you already own.

A Thrift Run for Superhero Bases
Before I cut a single piece of felt, I go through my own drawers and then a thrift store with a short list. Nearly every costume here is ordinary clothing underneath, and the right base saves hours of sewing.
- Activewear in solid colours: fitted long-sleeve tops and high-waisted leggings in red, blue, black, purple and green. They're opaque, stretchy and already the right shape for a suit.
- Cropped jackets: brown faux leather (Rogue, Squirrel Girl), denim (America Chavez) and purple utility styles (Kate Bishop). Check the shoulders give you room to raise your arms.
- Long coats and dusters: burgundy or red for Scarlet Witch, a yellow raincoat if you ever want Jubilee. Coats make a cold night easy.
- Plain skirts and tunics: pleated blue for Supergirl or Sailor Moon, a knee-length blue tunic for Ms. Marvel.
- Belts with good buckles: a wide belt with metal hardware reads as a utility belt on almost any hero.
When something is close but not quite the right shade, I'd leave it. A blue that's slightly off next to a red that's slightly off is what makes a costume look homemade in the wrong way. One base piece in the exact colour, plus neutrals, beats a full set in nearly right colours.
1. Wonder Woman Costume With Red Cape

Wonder Woman needs a red fitted top, a blue pleated skirt or leggings, and a red cape. I run gold trim around the neckline and waist with metallic fabric tape, or let a light gold belt do the waist for me. If your hair isn't long and dark, a wavy brown wig fills that in. The gold headband, silver cuffs and a coil of gold rope at the hip are what make people say her name. Soft bronze eyes, defined brows and a red lip finish her. Red knee boots are traditional; red sneakers are what I'd walk in. On a cold night, thermal tights and a fitted long-sleeve layer under the top change nothing in photos.
2. Supergirl Costume With Blue Skirt

Supergirl's colours read across any room. A fitted blue top gets a handmade red-and-yellow emblem, then a red pleated skirt and opaque tights. When I make her cape, I stitch it to the shoulder seams inside the collar rather than tying it, so it can't pull on your neck. Long blonde waves, natural or wig, rosy cheeks, mascara and a soft pink lip keep her bright. A slim gold belt gives the waist some structure. Knee boots, ankle boots or clean sneakers all work. For more coverage, blue leggings under a longer red tunic still look right.
3. Batgirl Costume With Yellow Cape

This Batgirl is the darker version: sleek black with yellow accents. A black long-sleeve jumpsuit, or fitted top and leggings, gets a yellow bat emblem, utility belt, gloves and a scalloped cape. Felt is my pick for the cape because the scallops can be cut and left raw without fraying. A black eye mask and an eared headpiece carry the character, so you don't need complex makeup. Red waves or a shoulder-length auburn wig, smoky grey eyes, black liner and a muted berry lip suit her. Black combat boots give real support. For more coverage, a black faux-leather jacket under the cape keeps the yellow visible.
4. Black Widow Costume With Utility Vest

Black Widow is mostly a shopping-your-drawers costume. A black zip-front jumpsuit, or fitted long-sleeve top with cargo pants, gets a black utility vest with red felt hourglass patches. I tack the felt on with a few hand stitches at each point, because glued felt corners lift on a vest that keeps bending. Fingerless gloves, a wide belt and simple cuffs give the tactical finish with no weapon props needed. A short red wavy wig, or auburn hair in a loose braid, is her hair. Matte foundation, taupe shadow, mascara and a neutral lip stay understated. Supportive combat boots and a small crossbody pouch for your phone round her out.
5. Captain Marvel Costume With Gold Star

Captain Marvel can be a fitted red-and-blue jumpsuit or blue leggings with a matching long-sleeve top. Her strong geometric lines come from red shoulder panels and gold fabric tape. I lay the tape out with the top on a dress form or stretched over a cushion, since tape applied flat buckles when the fabric stretches over your body. A big gold star at the centre of the chest and a red sash or structured belt follow. Windswept blonde waves, natural or a shoulder-length wig, suit her. Luminous skin, gold shadow, mascara and a pink lip give the glow. Red ankle boots or flat knee boots, small gold studs and metallic cuffs complete her.
6. Scarlet Witch Costume With Red Crown

Scarlet Witch is a good costume for a long, cool evening. A dark red fitted top and black leggings go under a long burgundy coat or sleeveless cape, with a structured red belt to define the waist. Her pointed crown is the signature. I cut mine from craft foam, warm it with a hairdryer so it curves around the head, and back it with felt where it touches the forehead. A bought lightweight headpiece is fine too. Long auburn waves, burgundy shadow, defined lashes and a deep rose lip suit her. Translucent red acrylic discs or small glowing red accessories suggest the magic. Black ankle boots and a red turtleneck underneath for warmth finish the layers.
7. Spider-Gwen Costume With White Hood

Spider-Gwen is about the crisp white hood over a black base with pink webs. A black long-sleeve jumpsuit, or leggings with a fitted athletic top, goes under a white cropped hoodie or sleeveless hooded layer lined with pink. I draw the web pattern on the inner hood and sleeves with fabric markers, and test the marker on a seam allowance first because some bleed on knit. A side-parted blonde bob wig shows when the hood's down. Pink blush, winged liner and a glossy neutral lip keep the face light. White high-tops or soft athletic shoes, with teal soles or ankle accents in removable tape, and a small white belt bag finish her.
8. Ms. Marvel Costume With Blue Tunic

Ms. Marvel is the best pure DIY costume here, because the base is just a blue knee-length tunic or long top over red leggings. The gold bolt can be fabric vinyl, felt or removable tape; vinyl gives the sharpest edge. A light red scarf wrapped at the neck with the ends left loose plays the part of a cape. Add a gold cuff, red wristbands and a blue eye mask if you like. Dark brown waves, peach blush, defined lashes and a rosy lip keep her youthful. Red sneakers are the right shoe for her. A small crossbody bag hides under the scarf, which makes her a practical trick-or-treat costume.
9. She-Hulk Costume With Purple Jumpsuit

She-Hulk is purple and white, and the purple is what tells people who she is. A sleeveless purple athletic jumpsuit, or purple leggings with a matching tank over a white fitted shirt, gets white side panels in stretch fabric or wide tape. Body paint is optional; green tights, gloves and a carefully blended face are the more comfortable way to do it. Press translucent powder over the green before adding purple shadow, dark brows and berry lipstick, or the purple goes muddy. A long dark green or black wavy wig completes her. White high-tops or flat boots suit her athletic build. A legal folder or small briefcase nods to Jennifer Walters, the lawyer.
10. Storm Costume With White Cape

Storm in white and silver is an elegant break from the bright suits. A white or silver fitted jumpsuit, or white trousers with a long-sleeve bodysuit, is the base. The cape attaches at the wrists or shoulders; wrist loops give you the wing shape when you lift your arms. Silver cuffs, a metallic belt and lightning earrings add detail. Style the long white wig in waves, a full textured shape or a mohawk, depending on which era of her you like. Silver shadow, highlighter and a cool berry lip suit her. White ankle boots look cleanest, silver sneakers are kinder to your feet. A translucent lightning prop or iridescent clutch is easy to carry.
11. Jean Grey Phoenix Costume With Gold Sash

Phoenix gets her impact from colour, not construction. A dark green fitted jumpsuit, or top and leggings, gets long yellow gloves, a wide gold sash and yellow knee boots or boot covers. Cut the phoenix chest symbol from gold felt and attach it with fabric adhesive, then tack the wing tips by hand so they don't curl. Long red waves, or an auburn wig, fit her. Warm gold shadow, defined liner, flushed cheeks and a red lip work with the green. A light gold cape adds movement, but she reads fine without it. A small flame-shaped acrylic piece or a gold clutch is enough of a prop.
12. Rogue Costume With Green Jacket

Rogue is layered, which makes her one of the warmest choices for a chilly October night. A green-and-yellow fitted top goes with black or green leggings and a cropped brown faux-leather jacket. A yellow belt and gloves keep the classic colours. The white streak at the front of a full auburn wig is her most important detail; if you're using your own hair, a clip-in white piece does the job. Brown liner, warm blush and a muted red lip stay natural. Green-and-yellow boots are ideal, though brown combat boots suit a closet version. A fabric headband and a small X badge finish her, and the gloves keep your hands warm all evening.
13. Invisible Woman Costume With Blue Jumpsuit

The Invisible Woman is easy to personalise because the uniform is so simple. A medium-blue jumpsuit, or blue leggings with a fitted long-sleeve top, gets black side panels, a black collar, gloves and a belt. The circle-and-number emblem goes on the chest in felt or printable fabric; printable fabric gives a perfect number if your scissors aren't steady. A shoulder-length blonde blowout or smooth bob wig suits her. Cool eyeshadow, light contour and a pale pink lip are enough. Black ankle boots or sleek sneakers keep her comfortable. A clear acrylic purse or transparent bangles are a playful nod to invisibility, and silver highlight adds a futuristic touch.
14. Wasp Costume With Sheer Wings

The Wasp works on a black base with yellow or gold geometric panels across a fitted top and leggings. A structured belt, fingerless gloves and a small silver cuff come next. For the wings, I build a simple harness of elastic straps that rests between the shoulder blades, because wings sewn straight to a shirt drag the neckline back all night. A short dark bob or neat ponytail suits her. Gold shadow, crisp black liner and a nude lip look polished. Black ankle boots with yellow laces tie in the colours, and a small silver headpiece or antenna band adds the tech. Keep the wings narrow enough for doorways.
15. Shuri Black Panther Costume With Purple Details

Shuri's Black Panther is a black fitted jumpsuit with silver and purple geometric patterns. I use flexible fabric tape or thin painted foam panels around the neckline, shoulders and waist; thick foam stands away from the body on a curve. A short sleeveless tunic over black leggings is a less body-hugging option. Wear your natural hair in braids, twists or an updo that feels right to you. Metallic purple shadow, precise liner and highlight suit her tech look. Silver cuffs and purple bead-style accessories finish it without props. Black combat boots or sleek sneakers and a small metallic belt bag keep it practical.
16. Mera Costume With Green Scale Dress

Mera is rich green, gold and long red hair. A fitted green maxi dress, jumpsuit or tunic with leggings, ideally with a faint scale texture, is the base. Add a gold waist belt, cuffs and a small crown headband. The long copper-red wig carries her more than anything else. Sea-green shadow, a little gold liner and coral lipstick look luminous. Green ankle boots keep the colour unbroken; gold flats are softer. Carry a translucent blue orb or wave-shaped acrylic piece, nothing sharp. For cold weather, a green long-sleeve underneath and a light teal cape that ripples when you walk keep her warm and add movement.
17. Raven Costume With Purple Cape

Raven is mysterious without being frightening. A black long-sleeve leotard over opaque tights, or a black tunic and leggings for more coverage, goes under a deep purple hooded cape with purple gloves. Her red gem belt is easy to make from craft foam and flat-backed acrylic gems glued with a flexible craft glue. Style a short violet wig into a smooth angled bob. Lavender shadow, soft brows, muted mauve lips and a small red gem on the forehead finish the face; use skin-safe adhesive for the gem. Black ankle boots or purple lace-ups, and a translucent purple orb or geometric clutch, keep her family-friendly.
18. Starfire Costume With Purple Boots

Starfire is cheerful and easy to adjust for coverage. A metallic purple dress, jumpsuit or fitted top with leggings gets silver panels at the neckline, wrists and waist in fabric tape or thin foam. Metallic knit can be slippery under a presser foot, so if you're sewing panels on, I'd use a walking foot or tissue paper underneath. The long bright red hair matters most; a waist-length voluminous wig does it. Violet shadow, peach blush, glossy pink lips and small silver face gems at the outer eyes suit her. Purple knee boots or flat ankle boots, glowing green bracelets for her powers and a silver mini backpack finish her.
19. Bumblebee Superhero Costume With Yellow Wings

Bumblebee is yellow-and-black separates with an action-ready feel. Black leggings and a yellow fitted top get black geometric stripes across the torso, with a short yellow jacket or structured vest layered over. Small translucent wings go on a light harness, plus a slim black eye mask or yellow-tinted glasses. Curls, braids or a high ponytail all work. Gold shadow, black liner and warm pink lips suit her. Yellow high-tops, black gloves and a honeycomb belt bag complete her. Angular, compact wings are what keep her looking like a superhero and not a garden bee, so cut them with straight edges rather than round lobes.
20. Elastigirl Costume With Black Eye Mask

Elastigirl is streamlined and family-friendly. A red long-sleeve jumpsuit, or red athletic shirt and leggings, gets the black-and-yellow chest emblem in felt or iron-on vinyl. Vinyl stays flatter on stretch fabric if you stretch the shirt slightly over a board while pressing. Black gloves, a black brief overlay and a slim eye mask make the uniform. A short auburn bob with curled ends suits her. Mascara, peach blush and a red-pink lip keep it clean. Black knee boots look accurate; flexible black sneakers are better for walking. A narrow yellow belt and a mask held with skin-safe adhesive, patch-tested first, finish her.
21. America Chavez Costume With Denim Jacket

America Chavez is built entirely from everyday clothes. A black graphic tee, dark shorts or jeans and a blue denim jacket are the base. The big white star across the back of the jacket is the detail to get right; I trace a template onto freezer paper, iron it on as a stencil and dab fabric paint through it for crisp points. Smaller red, white and blue details go on the shoulders. Black tights help when it's cool. Loose waves or a ponytail, bold brows, winged liner and berry lipstick suit her. Red high-tops, silver hoops and a star-print crossbody bag finish the look. No mask, no cape, no bodysuit needed.
22. Kate Bishop Hawkeye Costume With Purple Jacket

Kate Bishop is practical black clothing with clear purple details. Black leggings or fitted cargo pants go with a sleeveless purple athletic top and a cropped purple jacket. A black utility belt with small pouches holds your things. Skip the bow and arrows; an arrow necklace, a purple target pin or a logo patch sets the theme safely. A high ponytail with face-framing pieces suits her. Purple shadow, subtle winged liner and a berry lip are enough. Black combat boots stay comfortable outdoors, and purple fingerless gloves with a black crossbody bag finish her.
23. Mighty Thor Costume With Silver Armor

Mighty Thor can look impressive without heavy armour or a hammer. Black leggings and a fitted black sleeveless top are the base. I attach the silver foam panels across the chest and shoulders to a separate vest rather than the top, so the armour comes off in one piece when you sit down to eat. A deep red cape gives contrast and movement. A long blonde wig with small braids at the temples, silver shadow, lashes and a cool pink lip finish the face. Silver cuffs, a winged headpiece and black knee boots with silver tape complete her. A silver geometric clutch or lightning brooch replaces the hammer in a crowded room.
24. Gamora Costume With Black Leather Vest

Gamora pairs a dark tactical outfit with green skin and vivid hair. Black fitted cargo pants, a black tank and a structured faux-leather vest get burgundy panels, silver buckles and a wide belt. Apply the green in thin, even layers with a damp sponge and set each layer; one thick coat cracks and transfers. Plum shadow, defined brows and a deep berry lip go on top. A long dark wig with burgundy or magenta ends, or temporary coloured extensions in your own hair, is her hair. Black combat boots, silver cuffs and a metallic pouch finish her, no weapon needed. Test the makeup beforehand and keep cleansing wipes or balm ready for the end of the night.
25. Nebula Costume With Blue Makeup

Nebula is a costume for someone who enjoys a longer makeup session. A fitted burgundy jumpsuit, or purple leggings with a structured sleeveless top, gets black panels, silver trim and flexible foam shoulder pieces. The face is blue paint applied evenly, with purple shading and thin silver lines for her cybernetic details, kept clean and graphic rather than gory. A blue bald cap is the most accurate, but caps take practice to blend at the edge, so a short dark blue wig is the easier choice. Dark purple lips, defined black lashes, black ankle boots, metallic gloves and a silver belt bag finish her. Light panels let you sit comfortably.
26. Okoye Hero Costume With Red Armor

Okoye's uniform inspires a regal red-and-gold costume. A red long-sleeve jumpsuit, maxi dress or fitted tunic over leggings gets gold geometric trim at the neckline and waist, with flexible brown armour-style panels over the skirt or hips. Faux leather or thin EVA foam painted brown both bend well enough to sit in. Her head is closely cropped, so a smooth cap works if you need one, decorated with removable gold markings or jewellery-style details at the head and neckline. Bronze shadow, precise liner and a rich red lip suit her. Brown knee boots, wide gold cuffs and a structured metallic clutch replace the spear, which keeps her easy to wear indoors or out.
27. Silk Costume With Red Face Covering

Silk is a red-and-black uniform built on athletic basics. Black leggings and a fitted black long-sleeve top get red web lines along the arms, torso and ankles in fabric paint. Test every paint and marker on a scrap first, and stretch the fabric over cardboard while you paint, or the lines crack the first time you bend. A soft red face covering wraps the lower face; keep it breathable and easy to pull down. Long black hair straight or in waves suits her. With half the face covered, the eyes do the work: black liner, mascara and a hint of red shadow. Red sneakers or light ankle boots, fingerless gloves and a black waist bag complete her.
28. Squirrel Girl Costume With Brown Jacket

Squirrel Girl is cheerful and built from cosy fall layers. Brown leggings, a fitted tan top and a cropped brown faux-leather or suede jacket make the base. The tail is the engineering problem: I attach it to a sturdy belt, never the clothes, and anchor it with a short strip of stiff interfacing or a bent wire hanger inside so it stands up instead of flopping. Add an ear headband, brown gloves and a pouch with an acorn emblem. A full brown bob or loose curls, copper shadow, freckles, rosy blush and a pink lip suit her. Brown lace-up boots and a small plush squirrel finish her. Set the tail high enough to sit down comfortably.
29. Sailor Moon Costume With Blue Skirt

Sailor Moon brings bright animated colour to a superhero party. A white fitted top or sailor bodice with a blue collar and red front bow, a blue pleated skirt, white gloves with red cuffs and a red choker make the outfit. The hair is the real build: two high buns with long pigtails on a blonde wig. Pigtail wigs are heavy at the back, so I pin through a wig cap at several points and add a couple of pins under each bun. Blue shadow, fine liner, rosy blush and a glossy pink lip suit her. Red knee boots or red flats, a gold tiara, crescent earrings and a round-edged wand or moon purse finish her.
30. Blossom Powerpuff Girl Costume With Red Bow

Blossom is a last-minute costume that still looks thought through. A sleeveless pink dress with a wide black stripe at the middle goes over a white fitted shirt and opaque white tights. If you can't find the stripe, wide black grosgrain ribbon stitched around the dress does it neatly. The big red bow headband is her most important piece, so make it oversized. Long orange-red hair, straight with curved-under ends, natural or wig, suits her. Big winged liner, pink blush and a bright rosy lip keep it animated. Black Mary Janes are classic, flat black sneakers more comfortable. A small pink handbag with a heart or star finishes her.
Green, Blue and Purple Skin That Stays Off Your Collar
She-Hulk, Gamora and Nebula all need coloured skin, and that's where these costumes most often go wrong: the paint streaks, cracks, or ends up on the jacket by the second hour. This is how I'd do it at home with everyday makeup, not professional effects.
- Patch-test the paint on the inside of your wrist the day before and wait a full day. Skip it if you see redness or itching.
- Start on clean, moisturised skin, and let the moisturiser sink in for a few minutes so the colour doesn't slide.
- Apply thin layers with a damp makeup sponge rather than a brush. Two thin coats look smoother and flex better than one heavy one.
- Press translucent setting powder over each layer, then mist lightly with a setting spray if you have one.
- Cover arms with coloured sleeves or tights instead of painting them. Less paint means less transfer onto chairs, friends and costume pieces.
- At the end of the night, melt the colour off with an oil cleanser or balm before washing your face. Scrubbing with soap alone just smears it and irritates skin.
Keep the wig and any light-coloured fabric away from your face until the powder has set. Ten minutes of patience saves a white collar or a pale wig fringe from turning green.
Start With the Colours, Then Add One Signature Piece
Every heroine here comes down to the same order of work: get the character's colours onto a base you can wear for hours, then add one or two defining pieces, whether that's a cape, emblem, wig, mask or metallic belt. You don't need expensive armour or complicated props. Athletic separates, thrifted jackets, stretch jumpsuits and felt symbols do the job on a sensible budget. Patch-test any makeup, fasten accessories so they can't slip, and choose shoes for the night you're actually having. Then pick the heroine whose personality you'd enjoy wearing for an evening.
