Most heroines are read from three things: the colour of the suit, the shape on the chest and the hair. Get those right and the rest can come from your own wardrobe. I've gathered thirty women from comics, films and anime here, from Wonder Woman to Sailor Moon, and for each one I say where I'd spend the effort and where leggings and a thrifted jacket will do the job. Most of them can be built on an athletic base with felt, vinyl or craft foam on top, so you can still sit, dance and use the bathroom. Adjust hems, sleeves and heel heights to your own comfort; nobody at a party checks your boots against the comic panel.

Felt, Vinyl or Paint for the Chest Emblem
Almost every costume below has a symbol on the chest, and it is the first thing people look at, so it is worth getting the material right for the fabric underneath.
- Felt is the quickest. Cut it with sharp scissors and attach it with fabric glue or a few hand stitches. Hot glue looks fine at home but tends to let go on stretch fabric once the suit is pulled on and off.
- Iron-on vinyl gives the cleanest edges and suits shapes like Supergirl's shield or Ms. Marvel's bolt. It works on cotton and many polyester blends, but test it on a hidden seam first, because some spandex shines or puckers under the iron.
- Stretch fabric paint is the only choice for web lines and patterns on leggings. Put a piece of cardboard inside the garment, stretch it slightly, and let each coat dry fully before the next.
- Removable costume tape is for a dress or jacket you want back afterwards. It holds for an evening, not for a week of wear.
Make the symbol a little larger than you think. A shape that looks right in the mirror often disappears at a dim party, and a slightly bold emblem reads from across the room.
1. Wonder Woman Costume With Red And Blue Armor

Wonder Woman reads by colour first, so I put the money into a red top with real structure and let everything else stay simple. A gold eagle cut from felt sits across the chest, a blue pleated skirt or shorts goes over opaque tights, and gold craft-foam cuffs, belt and a star headband carry the armour idea without the weight. Loose dark waves and a red lip are all the makeup she needs. The rope can be a coil of gold cord from the craft aisle. I'd pick flat red ankle boots over knee-highs with a heel if you'll be standing for hours, because the colour is what people notice, not the height.
2. Supergirl Costume With Blue Dress And Red Cape

Supergirl is one of the easiest builds on this list: a blue skater dress, or a blue top and knee-length skirt, plus a red cape and the shield. Make the shield from felt or iron-on vinyl; printed fabric frays at the points unless you seal the edges. Keep the cape at knee length. Anything longer gets stepped on the first time you sit down. Blonde waves, natural or wig, a pink lip, red tights and red boots finish her. If you already own a blue dress, costume tape will hold a felt shield for one evening and peel off without marking it.
3. Batgirl Costume With Black Cape And Yellow Details

Batgirl is a black base with yellow on top, and the yellow is what shows up in a dark room. A black bodysuit or fitted athletic top with opaque leggings, a yellow bat across the chest, a yellow belt and gloves, then a soft fabric cape. The eye mask and ear headband give you the outline without a cowl, which I'd avoid anyway because cowls trap heat. Red or auburn waves matter here; she's one of the few heroes people know by hair colour. When I make the belt, I add a couple of real pouches out of craft foam so keys and a phone have somewhere to go. Black combat boots handle a long night on hard floors.
4. Black Widow Costume With Black Jumpsuit

Black Widow is the practical choice if you hate fuss. A black utility jumpsuit is ideal, but a zip-front track jacket and matching leggings read the same from across a room. The red hourglass on a wide belt is the detail that tells people who you are, so make it big enough to see. Fingerless gloves and plain wrist cuffs do the rest, and a small black pouch beats any prop. A copper-red wig or your own red hair in soft curls, sharp eyeliner and a neutral lip suit her. She is also the warmest costume here, because a thermal shirt disappears under all that black.
5. Captain Marvel Costume With Red Blue And Gold Suit

Captain Marvel needs three colours placed in the right spots, nothing more. Start with a fitted blue jumpsuit or a blue athletic set, then add red at the shoulders and belt and gold piping down the front in felt, fabric tape or stretch vinyl. The gold star at the centre of the chest is the one thing I'd never skip. A short blonde wig or loose waves, a touch of gold shadow and red boots tie it together. Gold gloves look great, but buy the thin stretch kind; thick metallic gloves make it impossible to hold a drink or use your phone.
6. Scarlet Witch Costume With Red Coat And Crown

The crown is what makes Scarlet Witch, so I spend my time there. Cut it from craft foam, heat it gently over a hairdryer so it curves to your forehead, and paint it a deep red rather than a bright one. Underneath, a burgundy fitted top, black leggings and a long red coat or sleeveless cape handle the rest. Long auburn hair with a centre part, berry shadow and a muted red lip keep the palette consistent. Black knee-high boots make it a good cold-night option. For the magic, I tie lengths of sheer red ribbon to plain wristbands; they move when you gesture and can't hurt anyone.
7. Ghost-Spider Costume With White Hood And Pink Details

Ghost-Spider is a white hood over black, with pink and blue inside the hood, and that lining is the detail people look for. A black unitard or leggings and a fitted top form the base. Layer a white sleeveless hoodie on top and stitch pink-and-blue web fabric into the hood; fusible web works if you don't sew. White gloves and white sneakers keep the white balanced head to toe. A blonde bob with pink tips shows when the hood is down. She's a good pick for anyone dancing or walking a convention floor, because nothing here is rigid.
8. She-Hulk Costume With Purple And White Suit

She-Hulk is really a makeup project, and I'd be honest with yourself about whether you want to wear green paint all night. If you do, use a water-activated face and body paint, patch-test it on your inner wrist a day ahead, and press translucent setting powder over it so it doesn't print onto chairs and friends. The outfit is simple: a purple-and-white unitard, or a white tank with purple bike shorts over tights. A long dark-green wig, strong brows and a deep berry lip stay visible against the green. If paint sounds like too much, a high-neck green base layer and green gloves give you the colour with a two-minute cleanup.
9. Storm Costume With White Cape And Silver Hair

Storm lives or dies on the white matching. Mixed whites look grubby next to each other, so I lay every piece out in daylight before the night and swap out anything that looks cream or blue. A white jumpsuit, or a white top with wide-leg trousers, a short cape clipped at the shoulders, and a wide silver belt with cuffs. The silver wig needs volume, so give a cheap one a gentle brush-out with a wide-tooth comb before you wear it. Silver shadow and a glossy lip suit the cool palette. White boots are classic, though silver sneakers will save your feet.
10. Jean Grey Phoenix Costume With Green And Gold Suit

The green-and-gold Phoenix is a good pick if you like a bold suit but not armour. A dark green jumpsuit or long-sleeve top and leggings, a gold sash at the waist and a big bird emblem across the chest in gold vinyl. I'd choose a matte stretch knit over shiny spandex here; shiny fabric shows every seam and lump under flash. Gold gloves and gold boot covers carry the colour down. The hair should be big and red, so a heat-resistant copper wig is worth it if you want to curl it. Warm gold shadow and a classic red lip finish her.
11. Rogue Costume With Green Jacket And Yellow Suit

Rogue is my first suggestion for anyone dressing for a cold night, because the green jacket is part of the costume. Under it, a yellow fitted top with leggings or a yellow jumpsuit, a brown belt and soft brown gloves. Green knee-high boots or boot covers finish the bottom half. The white streak in the front of the hair is the detail everyone looks for, so I'd buy an auburn wig with the streak already in it rather than trying to bleach or paint one. If head-to-toe yellow isn't for you, black leggings with yellow side panels keep the yellow, green and brown combination.
12. Jubilee Costume With Yellow Coat And Pink Top

Jubilee is a fun, loud nineties look and mostly found in a thrift shop. The yellow coat is the anchor, and a lightweight yellow rain jacket does the job if you can't find a trench. Under it, a hot-pink top and blue shorts over opaque tights, blue fingerless gloves and big geometric earrings. A short, messy black bob suits her. Pink shadow, a winged liner and a glossy lip match the energy. Skip anything that sheds, like loose confetti, because you will find it in your car for months. Iridescent ribbon wands give the fireworks idea and pack flat.
13. Ms. Marvel Costume With Blue Tunic And Red Scarf

Ms. Marvel is the costume I'd suggest first for school events, work parties or anyone who wants more coverage. A knee-length blue tunic over red leggings, a gold lightning bolt across the front in felt or iron-on vinyl, and a red scarf wrapped so it falls behind like a short cape. Gold cuffs and a narrow belt are the only extras. Long dark hair in natural waves, warm blush and a light lip tint keep her youthful. Red lace-up sneakers make sense for a character who's always running somewhere.
14. Wasp Costume With Black And Yellow Wings

Wasp needs wings that don't take out a drinks table. I keep them small and mount them on an elastic backpack-style harness, which spreads the weight across both shoulders instead of pulling on the back of the suit. The suit is a black athletic set with yellow panels on the torso, shoulders and thighs, plus a silver belt and slim cuffs. A sleek ponytail or a short brunette bob, gold shadow and neat black liner suit her. A silver headband with short flexible antennae is lighter and cooler than any helmet. Black boots or black sneakers with yellow laces handle the floor.
15. Shuri Black Panther Costume With Purple Armor

Shuri is about purple geometry on black, and I'd paint or vinyl the pattern on the shoulders, waist and legs rather than trying to cover the whole body. A black jumpsuit or long-sleeve top and leggings is the base. The silver collar is the armour hint, and soft foam keeps it from cutting into your neck when you look down. Braids, twists or a textured updo all suit her, so wear your own hair the way you like it. Purple liner and glowing skin are enough makeup. Silver cuffs with painted patterns stand in for her tech and leave both hands free.
16. Rescue Costume With Blue And Silver Armor

Rescue is armour in blue and silver, and I build it thin. Start with a navy or royal-blue jumpsuit, then cut chest, shoulder, forearm and knee panels from craft foam and round every edge so nothing catches on a sleeve. A little pale blue painted between the plates suggests glowing seams. The round pale-blue chest light is the focal point, so make it the cleanest piece. I attach every plate with hook-and-loop strips so I can pull the knee pieces off to sit down and pack the lot flat. A neat low ponytail and silver-blue shadow finish her.
17. Mighty Thor Costume With Silver Armor And Red Cape

Mighty Thor is black and silver with a big red cape, and the cape does most of the work. A sleeveless black jumpsuit or top and leggings, a silver chest panel, round shoulder pieces and foam cuffs. Keep the cape at knee length; a floor-length cape looks great in photos and becomes a tripping hazard on stairs. A long blonde wig, braided or loose, and silver shadow suit her. I'd leave the hammer at home if you're going to a crowded party. A silver winged headband says who you are just as well and leaves your hands free.
18. Invisible Woman Costume With Blue Suit

Invisible Woman is the costume I recommend when you have one evening and a blue top. A royal-blue jumpsuit or fitted top and matching leggings, a black collar, belt, gloves and boot covers, and the circular 4 on the chest in white and black felt. That emblem is what tells people who you are, so cut it carefully and centre it. Soft shoulder-length blonde waves and pale blue shadow suit her. For a quiet joke about invisibility, carry a clear acrylic clutch. Black ankle boots keep her easy to walk in.
19. Mera Costume With Green Scale Dress

Mera is green scales, long red hair and gold, and finding the right green fabric is half the job. Look for a long-sleeve green maxi dress or jumpsuit with a scale print or a slight sheen. If you can't find one, overlapping felt scales stitched or glued around the bodice and cuffs give texture. A narrow gold belt and a small gold crown add the royal note. A long copper-red wig in glossy waves, emerald liner and a coral lip complete her. Make sure the hem clears the ground; a dragging green hem picks up dirt fast and looks grey by midnight.
20. Raven Costume With Purple Cape And Black Dress

Raven can be moody without being scary, which makes her a good choice for mixed-age parties. A modest black long-sleeve dress, or a bodysuit with a skirt, under a deep purple hooded cape that falls to the knee. A red oval brooch at the neck, a matching belt and purple cuffs. A straight violet bob shows well under the hood, and lavender shadow with a plum lip keeps the colours together. Outdoors, a hood blows straight back in the wind, so I pin it to the wig or hair with a couple of bobby pins hidden at the crown.
21. Starfire Costume With Purple Suit And Orange Hair

Starfire is all about the hair: a long orange-red wig is the piece I'd spend on first. The outfit is a purple jumpsuit or a sleeveless purple tunic and leggings, with silver collar, belt, cuffs and boot covers in metallic stretch fabric or thin foam. Orange body paint is optional, and honestly most people skip it; it's messy and transfers onto everything. Purple shimmer shadow and long lashes add the glow. Translucent green bangles stand in for her energy and fit safely in a crowd.
22. Zatanna Costume With Tuxedo Jacket And Top Hat

Zatanna is a tuxedo look, and real tailoring shows here, so I'd look for a fitted black blazer before buying a costume version. Wear it over a crisp white blouse with black high-waisted shorts and opaque tights, or a black knee-length skirt if you want more coverage. A white bow tie, a satin cummerbund, white gloves and a black top hat finish her. A top hat falls off the moment you laugh, so stitch a thin elastic under the brim and hide it in your hair. Smooth black curls, winged liner and a red lip suit her. Oversized playing cards make a light, fun prop.
23. Vixen Costume With Orange Suit And Gold Details

Vixen is warm orange with black side panels and gold. An orange jumpsuit, or an orange athletic top and leggings, with black strips down the sides; side panels are flattering because they draw the eye in at the waist. A broad gold belt, gold cuffs and a small animal pendant are her signature details. A high ponytail, braids or natural curls, bronze shadow and a deep red lip. A subtle cat eye nods to the animal theme. If you add a faux-fur collar, keep it small; big fur collars are hot indoors and shed onto everything.
24. Bumblebee Costume With Yellow Armor And Wings

Bumblebee is black-and-yellow colour blocking with compact wings and blue accents. A black jumpsuit or top and leggings, yellow armour panels across the chest, hips and thighs in craft foam or stiff felt, and small sheer wings on a backpack harness. Tinted blue glasses are easier to see through than a mask. A high ponytail, braids or a sleek bob all work. Blue liner gives a sharp contrast. I'd use short flexible antennae on a padded headband, because the thin plastic ones dig behind the ears after an hour.
25. Squirrel Girl Costume With Brown Jacket And Tail

Squirrel Girl is the cosy choice, and the tail is the whole costume. A brown bomber jacket or faux-suede vest over a tan top and dark brown leggings, a wide belt with small pouches and a few felt acorns. Attach the tail to the belt, never to the leggings; a heavy plush tail will drag the waistband down. A stiff piece of craft foam or a plastic hanger hook inside the base keeps it standing. Bouncy brown curls or an auburn wig, freckles dotted on with brown liner and an ear headband finish her. A plush squirrel sidekick makes her fun for kids at a party.
26. America Chavez Costume With Star Denim Jacket

America Chavez is basically a great street outfit, which means you can wear most of it again. The denim jacket with a big white star on the back is the main piece. Add smaller stars on the sleeves, layer it over a red T-shirt and black jeans or leggings, and add a red-and-white belt and silver hoops. Natural curls or a wavy bob, bold brows and a berry lip suit her. Red high-tops are comfortable for long events. I cut the stars from felt and stick them on with fabric-safe tape so the jacket goes back into your wardrobe afterwards.
27. Spider-Woman Costume With Red And Yellow Suit

Spider-Woman uses deep red with yellow and black web lines. A red long-sleeve jumpsuit or top and leggings is the base, with a yellow chest panel narrowing to the waist and yellow triangles under the arms. The web lines are the fiddly part. I draw them with stretch fabric paint while the fabric is pulled taut over cardboard, so the lines don't crack when you move. A long dark-brown wig with a centre part, red-toned shadow and winged liner suit her. A small eye mask is nice for photos, but take it off when you walk; even small masks block side vision.
28. Silk Costume With Black And Red Web Suit

Silk is easy to build from black activewear with red webbing. A black long-sleeve top and leggings or a unitard, with a red web pattern at the shoulders, chest, wrists and lower legs in stretch fabric paint or removable vinyl. Before you paint the whole suit, test a strip on a scrap and stretch it hard; cheap paint cracks the first time you bend. A red neck gaiter can be pulled up over the lower face for photos. Long straight black hair, sharp liner and red shadow keep her clean. Black ankle boots with red laces and fingerless gloves finish it.
29. Ironheart Costume With Red And Gold Armor

Ironheart is the build for anyone who enjoys a craft project. A dark red jumpsuit or athletic set is the base, and the armour is gold and red foam on the chest, shoulders, forearms, thighs and shins. The pale-blue heart on the chest is the focal point. Use removable fasteners so you can take off the shin and thigh pieces to sit. I'd skip a full helmet and make an open-face headpiece instead; you'll be seen, you'll breathe, and your hair or braids stay visible. Sand or heat-seal the foam edges so they look finished and don't scratch your arms.
30. Sailor Moon Costume With Blue Skirt And Red Boots

Sailor Moon closes the list, and the hair is the hard part. The odango, two buns with long ponytails, needs a wig with clip-in pieces unless you have very long blonde hair. The uniform is a white fitted top or bodysuit, a blue sailor collar and a pleated blue skirt, with a big red bow on the chest and another at the back. White elbow-length gloves and a gold tiara with a red gem finish the top half. Red knee-high boots finish her. Wear shorts under the short skirt, and sew the bows on rather than pinning them; pinned bows twist sideways within an hour.
Foam Armour You Can Sit Down In
Rescue, Ironheart, Mighty Thor, Shuri and Bumblebee all use some armour, and the mistake I see most is building it as one stiff shell. A chest plate that is glued straight onto a jumpsuit turns into a board the moment you bend, and knee pieces that don't come off make it impossible to sit.
- Use thin craft foam for small cuffs and trims, and thicker EVA foam only where you want a real curve, like a chest plate or shoulders.
- Warm the foam with a hairdryer and shape it over your own arm or a bowl; it holds the curve once it cools.
- Seal it with a flexible primer before painting, or the metallic paint will crack along every bend.
- Attach each plate with hook-and-loop strips or elastic, not glue, so knee and thigh pieces come off before you sit.
- Round every edge and corner. Sharp foam corners scratch your arms and catch on other people's clothes in a crowd.
Red, Silver and Green Hair Without Dyeing
So many of these heroines are identified by hair colour that a wig is often the best money you'll spend. A few things help a budget wig survive the night.
Take it out of the bag a few days early and brush it gently with a wide-tooth comb to release the packing kinks; most cheap wigs shed a little at first, so do it over a towel. If you want to curl it, check the label says heat-resistant before you go near it with a curling iron, because ordinary synthetic fibre frizzes or melts. A wig cap and a few bobby pins at the crown and behind the ears keep it in place, especially under a hood or crown. For Rogue's streak or Ghost-Spider's pink tips, buy a wig that already has them; painting your own rarely looks even.
Start With the Hero Whose Hair You Already Have
If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be to pick the heroine whose hair and colours you can match easily, then put your effort into her chest emblem or headpiece. A wig, a cape, a pair of foam cuffs and a felt symbol can all be made at home, and an athletic base will carry you through the whole night. Try on the full outfit once before the event, sit down in it, walk up stairs, and test the makeup on your wrist. Make it longer, looser or warmer where you need to; a hero you can move in will look better than one you can't.
