A Tina Turner costume lives or dies on two things: big, textured blond hair and an outfit that moves when you do. Across her decades on stage the formula stayed remarkably steady, with short hemlines, swinging fringe, sequins, leather and strong legs in a sturdy heel. You don't need a replica of any one dress. A thrifted mini, a few metres of craft-store fringe, a good shag wig, warm stage makeup and a toy microphone will carry the tribute. If you plan to dance, pick shoes that grip and fabrics with stretch. And celebrate her fashion, not her skin: wear your own natural complexion. Below are thirty head-to-toe versions, plus my notes on the wig and the fringe, which are where most homemade Tinas go wrong.

Getting Her Hair Big Without a Heavy Wig
Almost every look below depends on that spiky, piecey blond shag, and a flat cheap wig will drag the whole costume down. The good news is that volume comes from styling far more than from the price of the wig.
- Buy a shag or layered wig that is already short and choppy; long straight wigs are hard to cut into shape at home without making them look chewed.
- Put it on a wig head or a tall jar and backcomb the crown in small sections close to the cap, using a fine-toothed comb. Smooth only the top layer over it so the tease stays hidden.
- Twist the ends between your fingers with a little matte styling paste or wig wax to make them piecey, then mist with a firm hairspray from arm's length.
- If the wig is labelled heat-safe, a low-heat blow dryer lifts the roots further. If it isn't, keep it well away from curling tongs and hot dryers, since synthetic fibre frizzes or melts.
- Secure it with a wig cap and four or more bobby pins at the crown and behind the ears. Head-banging to Proud Mary will shift any wig that's only resting on your head.
A teased wig gets matted after a night of dancing. Let it hang overnight, then work the tangles out from the ends upward with a wide comb and a little detangling spray; it'll be ready to tease again next year.
1. Proud Mary Gold Fringe Costume

Gold fringe is the look most people picture first, so it's my starting point too. A sleeveless gold dress works, or a fitted dance leotard with a fringed skirt over it. Stack several rows of metallic fringe so they swing with every step; one row just hangs. Sheer tights or comfortable fishnets, then gold pumps, dance heels or glittery ankle boots. A big honey-blond wig with teased, piecey layers. Bronze shadow, winged liner, glowing cheeks and a glossy neutral lip. A lightweight vintage-style microphone is the only prop you need. If the hem feels short once you start moving, matching dance shorts underneath solve it and nobody sees them.
2. Private Dancer Denim Jacket Costume

The Private Dancer look is the easiest Tina to pull from a closet. A fitted denim jacket over a black camisole or bodysuit, a short black faux-leather skirt, black fishnets and pointed pumps, or heeled ankle boots if you'll be walking. The wig does the heavy lifting here: shaggy, highlighted blond with real volume at the crown. Smoky brown eyes, defined brows, warm blush and a glossy red-brown lip. Big costume earrings and a toy microphone. Rub the jacket's seams and cuffs with fine sandpaper so it looks like it's been on tour rather than straight off a hanger. Denim, leather mini and that hair together are what people recognise.
3. What’s Love Red Dress Costume

A bright red mini gives you 1980s glamour from one garment, which makes it a strong last-minute choice. Look for a draped, cowl-neck or sleeveless dress with a fitted waist and some swing in the skirt. Sheer black tights and red or black pumps; block heels if you'll be standing for hours. Tease a large blond wig into tousled layers, not neat curls, because curls make it read as a different decade. Smoky liner, a softly metallic lid, bronzer and a glossy red lip. Crystal earrings, a chunky cocktail ring and a handheld microphone. A strip of fashion tape keeps a draped neckline where it belongs. The colour carries across a crowded room, which suits a performance-themed party.
4. Simply the Best Black Leather Costume

Black faux leather is the sleek, rock-star Tina. A fitted mini dress in a sleeveless or one-shoulder cut gives plenty of movement, with sheer tights and sturdy heeled boots. Outdoors, throw a cropped leather jacket over the top but leave it open. Style a caramel-blond wig spiky at the crown with choppy, windswept ends. Charcoal shadow, strong liner, luminous cheeks and a classic red lip. Big silver hoops and stacked metal bracelets for shine, and a prop microphone or a light headset mic if you want your hands free. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so on a hot dance floor I'd pick a stretch version with a knit back panel. A removable fringe belt adds swing with no sewing.
5. Acid Queen Flame Dress Costume

The flame dress is the one to choose if you enjoy a proper craft project. Start with a fitted mini in red, orange or gold, then layer flame-shaped pieces in yellow, copper and red around the neckline, hips and hem. Cut the flames from felt, lamé or light satin, never anything stiff, which catches on chair backs and doorframes. Nude tights and gold heels or ankle boots. This one wants an enormous dark brown wig with lighter streaks, brushed out wild. Bronze shadow, dramatic lashes, warm contour and a glossy brick-red lip, with gold cuffs and a vintage-style microphone. Stitch each flame at the top only so the tips can flutter, which is the whole effect.
6. Silver Jumpsuit Performance Costume

A silver jumpsuit nods to her later performing years and covers more than most of the list. Choose a sleeveless or short-sleeved style with a fitted waist and flared or straight legs; add rhinestone trim along the neckline and side seams for more sparkle. Silver platforms or comfortable metallic boots. A short spiky blond wig with darker roots and feathery layers. Silver-grey shadow, black liner, peach blush and a glossy neutral lip. Wide metal cuffs, big crystal earrings and a wireless-style prop mic. Before you buy, do a deep squat in it: a jumpsuit without enough stretch splits at the crotch seam the first time you dance low.
7. White Halter Fringe Costume

White fringe catches party lights better than any other colour, which makes it a bright change from gold or black. Wear a white halter mini with a handkerchief hem and sew or glue soft fringe along the skirt. Nude tights and white, silver or crystal-covered dance heels. A caramel-blond wig with fluffy layers gives the height. Champagne shadow, sharp black liner, peach cheeks and a glossy rose lip, with sparkling drops and silver bracelets that don't fight the fringe. Carry a white or silver toy microphone. Pale fabric goes see-through under flash and stage lights, so add a white bodysuit or smooth nude shorts underneath before anyone takes a photo.
8. Silver Fringe Mini Dress Costume

Silver fringe is pure showgirl movement. Use a silver camisole dress, a dance dress or a fitted leotard and skirt, then attach several horizontal rows of metallic fringe from hip to hem, stopping above the knee so it doesn't tangle around your boots. Light grey fishnets and silver heeled boots. Tease a sandy-blond wig high and windswept with choppy ends. Smoky silver shadow, black mascara, warm blush and a deep rose lip, with rhinestone earrings, a wide silver cuff and a prop mic. Metallic fringe can be scratchy on bare thighs; sewing it to a detachable belt or a lined skirt keeps it off your skin. It moves dramatically with every step.
9. Gold Chain Mini Dress Costume

Plastic chains give a more sculptural shine than sequins. Start with a black or nude-toned mini and drape lightweight costume chain from the shoulders, waist and hem, tacking each loop down with several firm hand stitches. Real metal chain looks great for ten minutes, then the weight drags the neckline down and digs into your shoulders. Nude tights and gold ankle-strap heels or metallic boots. A tall, textured blond wig with darker roots and feathered layers. Bronze shadow, dramatic liner, golden highlighter and a glossy brown-red lip, with gold hoops, stacked bangles and a vintage mic. Sit down in it at home first to check nothing pinches or snags on the chair.
10. Black Sequin Fringe Costume

Black sequins are the easiest base to style and hide plenty of sins. A sleeveless black sequin mini with black or gunmetal fringe at the hips and hem, sheer black tights and black heeled ankle boots with cushioned insoles. A golden-blond wig with a spiky crown and sweeping side layers pulls it straight into her rock look. Charcoal shadow, winged liner, bronzer and a glossy berry lip. Silver hoops, metal bracelets and a light mic. A narrow silver belt where the bodice meets the fringe gives a clean line. In cold weather a fitted black top slips underneath without changing the look, and sequins hide the layer completely.
11. Red Sequin Mini Dress Costume

Red sequins do so much on their own that you barely need to add anything. A sleeveless red sequin mini with a stretch lining, which matters, because unlined sequins scratch the inside of your arms all night. Add red fringe at the hem for more swing, then sheer tights and black or red dance heels. A shaggy blond wig teased at the roots and swept back from the face. Metallic bronze shadow, black liner, fluttery lashes, warm blush and a glossy crimson lip. Crystal drops, a rhinestone bracelet and a prop mic. Layer a fitted red camisole under a low neckline if you like, and a cropped black jacket keeps it warm on the walk.
12. White Fringe Mini Dress Costume

This is the playful white version, built around tassels rather than a halter. Find a fitted sleeveless base covered in soft white tassels, or turn a plain white shift into one with rows of inexpensive trim. Sheer nude tights and white ankle boots with stable block heels. A voluminous blond wig with caramel lowlights, spiky layers and lifted roots. Pearl shadow, black liner, peach blush and a glossy coral lip, with crystal hoops, a wide silver bracelet and a silver prop mic. A few scattered rhinestones at the neckline help the white catch light. Wear fitted shorts underneath; tassels lift more than you think once you start spinning.
13. Leopard Print Mini Dress Costume

Leopard print is easy to find and suits her fearless side. A sleeveless leopard mini with a fitted bodice and a skirt with some give. Add a thin black fringe belt for movement without crowding the print, then black fishnets and suede or faux-leather ankle boots. A big honey-blond wig with darker roots and feathery, windswept layers. Bronze smoky eyes, black mascara, warm contour and a glossy neutral or brick-red lip, with oversized gold hoops, stacked bangles and a toy mic. Keep every other piece plain; a second pattern turns it into a 1980s aerobics outfit. Outdoors, a cropped black jacket comes off once you're inside.
14. Denim Jacket And Leather Pants Costume

Not a mini-skirt person? Faux-leather trousers keep the attitude with full coverage. Black stretch faux-leather pants, a fitted black tank and a cropped denim jacket with rolled sleeves. Pointed black boots look sharp and walk better than pumps. A blond shag wig with dark roots, big crown volume and choppy shoulder-length layers. Smoky brown shadow, black liner, peach blush and a glossy red lip, with large silver earrings, layered bracelets and a prop mic. Rhinestone patches or metal studs on the jacket make plain denim look stage-ready. Buy the trousers with stretch; rigid faux leather won't let you sit, let alone dance.
15. Black Bodysuit And Fishnet Costume

A fitted black bodysuit is a flexible base you can cover as much or as little as you like. Wear it with opaque dance shorts, black fishnets and a detachable fringe skirt or long tassel belt. Black heeled boots that hold the ankle firmly. A golden-blond wig with teased roots and windblown layers. Charcoal shadow, thick liner, glowing cheeks and a shiny red-brown lip, with a crystal choker, metal cuffs and a wireless-style mic. A black blazer or cropped leather jacket covers you for arriving and leaving. I'd choose fully lined dancewear over lingerie-style pieces, which shift and pinch under a skirt. It's built for a big entrance.
16. Gold Sequin Jumpsuit Costume

Gold sequins in jumpsuit form give you all her sparkle with full coverage. Choose a sleeveless jumpsuit with wide or slightly flared legs and a defined waist; a black belt adds structure if the fabric is floppy. Metallic platforms or block-heeled boots should show just below the hem, so hem the legs while wearing the actual shoes or you'll trip on the flare. A shaggy blond wig with darker roots and a high textured crown. Bronze-gold shadow, winged liner, warm highlighter and a glossy red lip, with oversized gold earrings, a stack of bracelets and a mic. If full sequins feel hot or itchy, a plain gold jumpsuit with rhinestones at the neckline gets close.
17. Silver Chainmail Dress Costume

Chainmail-style mesh gives a sharper, futuristic shimmer. Layer a silver mesh mini over a fitted silver or black bodysuit so nothing shifts or shows. Sheer black tights and silver ankle boots with a supportive heel. A short spiky blond wig with caramel undertones and plenty of height. Smoky grey shadow, black liner, luminous cheeks and a glossy plum-red lip, with crystal earrings, silver cuffs and a prop mic. Buy metallic mesh fabric rather than real metal links, which grow heavy and cold over an evening. A black fringe belt adds movement and marks the waist. It suggests her stage wardrobe without copying any single outfit.
18. Black Feather Mini Dress Costume

Feathers give the same flick as fringe with a softer texture. A fitted black mini trimmed with light black feathers at the neckline and hem, opaque tights and black ankle boots or closed-toe pumps. A big caramel-blond wig with a high crown, rough layers and softly spiked ends. Black and bronze smoky eyes, warm blush and a glossy berry lip, with silver earrings, stacked cuffs and a handheld mic. Keep the feather trim narrow, especially at the neck; wide boas shed into your lip gloss and tickle your chin all night. Fitted black shorts and a cropped jacket add coverage if you want it. It's comfortable enough to dance in for hours.
19. Red Leather Jacket Costume

A red faux-leather jacket gives a casual rock version one strong focal point. Wear it over a fitted black tank with a black mini or flexible faux-leather shorts, sheer tights and black boots with silver buckles. A golden-blond shag wig with obvious darker roots and lifted, feathered layers. Black liner, bronze shadow, glowing cheeks and a glossy red lip, with silver hoops, a studded belt, bracelets and a mic. Leave the jacket open and push the sleeves up a little so the black base shows. Almost every piece here goes back in your wardrobe afterwards, and it's warm enough for a cool evening. Skip extra props; the jacket is the star.
20. Blue Sequin Mini Dress Costume

Electric blue is a fun departure from her better-known gold and black. A fitted sleeveless blue mini with matching fringe at the hem, sheer tights and silver or blue ankle boots with block heels. A honey-blond shag wig shaped with lifted roots and piecey ends gives warm contrast against the cool dress. Go easy on silver-blue shadow, balancing it with black liner, warm blush and a glossy rose lip; too much blue on the lid fights the dress. Rhinestone hoops, a silver cuff and a prop mic. A narrow metallic belt links the dress to the boots. With heavy sequins, keep the jewellery simple. It reads well across a big party.
21. Purple Fringe Mini Dress Costume

Purple looks distinctive while keeping the classic formula. A fitted purple mini with layered fringe across the skirt and a few rhinestones at the neckline, sheer tights and silver, black or purple dance heels. A textured blond wig with dark roots, high crown volume and choppy shoulder-length pieces. Plum and bronze shadow, black liner, peach blush and a glossy berry lip, with crystal earrings, silver bangles and a mic. I wouldn't match every accessory to the dress; silver keeps the purple from going flat in photos. A fitted black bodysuit underneath adds coverage and warmth. It stands apart from the gold Tinas at any party.
22. Green Sequin Stage Costume

Emerald gives the sequined stage look a jewel-toned twist. A sleeveless green mini or dance leotard with a fringed green skirt, nude tights and metallic gold heels or secure ankle boots. A blond wig with caramel lowlights, teased volume and uneven layers. Bronze shadow, black liner, highlighted cheeks and a warm red lip, with gold hoops, stacked bracelets and a handheld mic. Can't find green fringe? Alternate green and gold rows, which actually adds depth. Dance shorts under the skirt and fashion tape at the neckline keep everything in place. The sparkle, legs, hair and attitude still say Tina, just in a new colour.
23. Hot Pink Fringe Costume

Hot pink is the playful Tina, and it already shouts, so hold back everywhere else. A simple fitted pink mini with matching fringe from hips to hem, sheer nude tights and silver or pink block heels. A large sandy-blond wig with dark roots and loose, windswept volume. Smoky brown eyes, black mascara, warm cheeks and a glossy fuchsia lip, with crystal earrings, silver bracelets and a vintage-style mic. Limit extra decoration to a few rhinestones at the neckline; a silver belt adds structure without fighting the fringe. It's cheerful and easy to spot, and it slots neatly into a group of music-icon costumes.
24. Black Tuxedo Stage Costume

A tuxedo version trades fringe for sharp tailoring and keeps all of her swagger. A fitted black blazer over a sparkly silver camisole, with tailored black shorts or slim trousers; sheer tights with the shorts, and black heeled boots. A short spiky blond wig with darker roots and dramatic crown volume. Smoky eyes, defined brows, glowing skin and a glossy deep-red lip, with crystal earrings, a silver bow tie hung loose and a mic. Push the blazer sleeves up to show stacked metal bracelets, and add a rhinestone lapel pin. Make sure you can raise your arms over your head in the blazer; a tight shoulder kills every big microphone pose.
25. Black Velvet Sequin Costume

Velvet is my pick for a chilly October night out. A fitted velvet mini with sequin panels, or a plain velvet dress with rhinestone appliqués at the neckline and hips. Opaque tights and black suede ankle boots with block heels. A warm blond wig with dark roots, a textured crown and feathered ends. Bronze-black smoky eyes, luminous blush and a glossy wine-red lip, with large crystal earrings, a metal cuff and a prop mic. Wear a fringe belt over the velvet for movement so you don't have to alter the dress. Iron-on appliqués don't bond to velvet pile and will crush it, so stitch them on instead.
26. 1960s Beaded Shift Dress Costume

Her early stage years call for a different shape and different hair. A sleeveless 1960s mini shift covered in silver, gold or champagne beads, cut straighter than the fitted 1980s looks. Sheer tights and low metallic pumps or dance shoes. Swap the spiky blond for a dark brown bouffant with smooth crown volume and flipped ends. Winged liner, defined lashes, warm blush and a glossy coral lip, with round statement earrings, a slim bracelet and a vintage mic. A fringe hem adds movement without spoiling the shift line. Check every bead strand before you dance, because a loose thread on a beaded dress unravels a whole row. It's a lovely pick for fans of her early career.
27. 1970s Bronze Fringe Costume

Bronze fringe brings in the warmth of her 1970s stage years. A fitted bronze or copper mini with long, light fringe along the skirt and sides. Nude tights and gold or bronze platform sandals with steady soles. A large dark brown wig with caramel streaks, brushed out for big movement. Bronze shadow, black liner, glowing cheeks and a glossy rust-red lip, with oversized gold hoops, wide cuffs and a handheld mic. Layer a matching dance leotard under a plunging neckline. Keep the fringe above the knee so it can't catch on the platform straps. When you dance, the strands and the hair move together, and that's exactly the effect.
28. Wildest Dreams Sequin Costume

This is a more polished 1990s take: a black sequin mini with silver embellishment under a long, light black satin or velvet coat to the knee. Sheer tights and streamlined black heeled boots. A shorter blond wig with spiky, carefully shaped layers and subtle darker roots. Smoky taupe shadow, defined liner, warm blush and a glossy neutral-red lip, with crystal earrings, a wide silver cuff and a wireless mic prop. Wear the coat open so the sequins show in photos, and pick one with side slits, or open the side seams a little, so it doesn't bind your stride. The coat doubles as warmth for the walk home.
29. Metallic Mini Dress And Long Coat Costume

A metallic mini with a long sweeping coat gives a grand arena-tour feel from around the turn of the millennium. Choose a fitted silver, pewter or gold dress and a light black coat with a subtle shimmer. Sheer black tights and pointed ankle boots with manageable heels. A cropped blond wig with darker roots, spiky texture and real height at the crown. Metallic smoky eyes, black liner, luminous cheeks and a glossy red-brown lip, with crystal drops, stacked cuffs and a prop headset mic. Cut the coat loose enough to flare back as you walk but short enough to clear the floor. A rhinestone belt ties the dress to the jewellery. It suits anyone who'd like glamour with more coverage.
30. Easy Last-Minute Tina Turner Costume

Out of time? Focus on what people spot first. Tuck a black tank into a black faux-leather mini, throw a denim jacket over it, add fishnets and whatever comfortable black boots you own. A voluminous blond shag wig with darker roots and deliberately messy layers is what turns this from a night-out outfit into Tina. Smoky liner, warm bronzer and a glossy red lip, with big hoops, stacked bracelets and a toy mic. If you have any craft supplies, a few strands of black or gold fringe on a removable belt adds swing. It's cheap and easy to dance in. Keep your own natural skin tone, stand tall and practise a big microphone pose before you leave.
Sewing Fringe So It Swings and Doesn't Tangle
Most of these costumes are a plain dress plus fringe, so this is the one skill worth learning. Craft fringe is sold on a woven header tape, and that tape is what you sew, never the strands.
- Mark guidelines around the dress with chalk, starting at the hem and working upward, so each new row covers the header tape of the row below. That hides the stitching and makes the layers ripple.
- Space rows about two-thirds of the fringe length apart. Closer and the dress turns stiff; further apart and you see gaps of plain fabric when you move.
- On a stretch dress, stretch the fabric slightly as you sew with a narrow zigzag, or the thread snaps the first time you bend.
- Fabric glue holds fringe for one evening on a woven dress but peels off knits and sequins, so stitch anything you want to wear twice.
- Before wearing, give the dress a hard shake and trim any stray strands to an even length.
Store a fringed dress hanging, not folded, and give it another shake before the next wear. Folded fringe takes a permanent kink at the crease and tangles into knots that only scissors can fix.
Heels You Can Dance In Until Midnight
Her look needs a heel, but a spindly pump on a dance floor is a recipe for blisters by ten o'clock. I steer most people towards a block heel or a heeled ankle boot that wraps the ankle; both spread your weight and stop the foot sliding forward. Wear them around the house for a few evenings first, add gel insoles under the ball of the foot, and scuff the soles on concrete so new shoes don't skate on a smooth floor. A pair of flat shoes in your bag is no shame at all.
Where I'd Spend the Money on a Tina Costume
If I had a small budget, most of it would go on the wig, with the rest on shoes I can dance in. Gold fringe is the classic, but denim and leather, sequins, jumpsuits, a tuxedo or a bright mini all work once the hair and the movement are right. A lightweight microphone makes even a closet outfit read as her. Put shorts or a bodysuit under short hems and test every row of fringe or chain at home before you go. Every look here can be adapted for more coverage, warmth or ease. Honour her by wearing your own natural skin tone and leaning into the hair, the clothes, the poses and that unmistakable joy on stage.
