A classy beach wardrobe is mostly a fabric decision. Linen, cotton gauze and silk keep you cool and still look finished at lunch, while synthetics trap heat and turn shiny in the sun. Whether your trip is the Amalfi Coast or a long weekend at a nearby beach town, the same pieces carry you from sand to dinner. I packed these 35 outfits around that idea: swimwear as the base, one layer over it, and shoes you can actually walk in. Where a piece is fussy to pack or care for, I say so.

A Beach Suitcase Built on Three Colors
The outfits below share pieces on purpose. When I pack for a week at the beach, I choose two neutrals and one accent color first, then only pack items in those three. Everything then goes with everything, and a small bag covers many more looks than it seems.
- Two neutrals: for example white and sand, or black and cream. Most linen, cover-ups and sandals come in these.
- One accent: coral, cobalt, emerald or a print that contains your neutrals. This goes into one swimsuit, one top and a scarf.
- Swimwear as tops: a bikini top or one-piece doubles as the base under shirts, trousers and skirts, so I pack two or three and fewer tops.
- Shoes: one flat sandal for walking, one slide for the beach, and one dressier pair for evenings. Shoes take the most space, so three is my limit.
Roll linen and cotton, and put silk and anything structured on top, folded in tissue. Pack the hat on your head or crown-up with soft clothes inside it. If you check a bag, keep one swimsuit and a cover-up in your carry-on in case luggage arrives late.
1. Linen Co-Ord Set With Slides

A matching linen set is the first thing I pack, because the shirt and shorts also work as separates with everything else. Sand, ivory or sky blue are the easiest colors. Wear the shirt open over a triangle bikini top. Linen creases within minutes of sitting, and I treat that as part of its look; if it bothers you, a linen-viscose blend creases less. Cushioned leather slides in tan or chocolate handle a full day of walking. Polarized sunglasses, a straw tote, a thin gold chain and small hoops, and you can go from a morning market to lunch.
2. Silk Slip Dress With Strappy Sandals

Bias-cut silk is cut on the diagonal of the fabric, which is why a slip dress skims rather than clings. Champagne, seafoam or soft coral suit sunset by the water. The downside on a trip: silk spots with water and shows sweat, so I keep it for evenings and pack it rolled in tissue. Flat metallic strappy sandals, a light scarf for when the breeze picks up, a beaded clutch and fine layered necklaces. A low bun shows off the neckline. Good for cocktails on a rooftop or dinner at the resort.
3. Crochet Cover-Up Over Black One-Piece

A black one-piece is the most useful swimsuit I know, and a crochet tunic over it adds texture without heat. Choose a mid-length cover-up in cream or ecru with an open pattern that lets the suit show through. Crochet stretches when wet and catches on rings and bag clasps, so I wear it dry and pull it on after the swim. A wide-brim raffia hat, oversized black sunglasses, cognac flat sandals and a woven crossbody. Gold hoops, and you can walk from the pool to a beachfront cafe.
4. White Button-Down Shirt As Beach Cover-Up

An oversized white button-down does more jobs than any piece in a beach bag: cover-up, sun layer on the shoulders, and a short dress over a one-piece. Throw it over a high-waist bikini or a swimsuit, roll the sleeves and leave the top buttons open. I pick cotton poplin or linen rather than a thin blend, which goes see-through when damp. Tailored cream linen shorts, flat leather sandals and a thin braided belt if you want shape. A canvas tote and gold studs. For coastal town walks and coffee on the boardwalk.
5. Wide-Brim Raffia Hat With Flowy Maxi Dress

A wide-brim raffia hat does real work on a beach trip: it shades the face, neck and shoulders. Paired with a floral or watercolor maxi that skims the ankles, it looks dressed for the day. A bandeau bikini underneath. Raffia crushes in a suitcase, so I wear the hat on travel days or pack it crown-up, stuffed with soft clothes. Flat woven sandals or espadrilles, a straw tote with leather handles and cat-eye sunglasses. Light gold jewelry, a bangle and small drops. Ideal for a long beach walk or dinner outside.
6. One-Piece Swimsuit With Sarong And Slides

A one-piece in terracotta, olive or navy is a strong base. Tie a light printed sarong at the hip for an asymmetric drape and coverage. A sarong also becomes a halter dress or a shawl, so it earns its space in the suitcase. I tie it with a square knot so it does not slip loose while walking. Flat leather sandals with a metallic sheen, round tortoiseshell sunglasses, a canvas beach bag big enough for a towel, and beaded bracelets. Fine for beach clubs, boat days and waterfront lunches.
7. Printed Kaftan Over Bikini

A printed silk or viscose kaftan is the definition of poolside luxury, covering you completely while letting air move. A jewel tone or bold botanical print, ankle length, over a bikini in a solid shade pulled from the print. Viscose shrinks if washed hot, so I hand-rinse it on the trip. Flat jeweled sandals or slides, resin earrings that echo the print, a sun hat and a slim clutch. For cocktail hour, I belt it with a thin leather tie, and that is the whole change.
8. Wide-Leg Linen Pants With Crop Top

High-waist wide-leg linen pants in ivory or sand keep you cool because air moves around the leg. A fitted white crop or ribbed cotton tank balances the width. When the sun is strong, a sheer cotton shirt over the shoulders protects your arms. I check that the hem clears the ground in your sandals, since linen hems drag through sand and dust. Woven leather mules, a basket bag, a gold chain bracelet and aviators. Good for sightseeing, market shopping and a long lunch outdoors.
9. Bikini Top With High-Waist Linen Trousers

Pairing your favorite bikini top with tailored high-waist linen trousers is how I go from swim to lunch in two minutes. A bandeau or halter top in coral, emerald or cobalt against beige or white pants. A wet bikini top will mark linen trousers, so I swap to a dry top or wait until it dries. An open oversized linen shirt for coverage, strappy flat sandals, a leather crossbody, gold hoops and an anklet. It looks planned, not thrown on.
10. Flowy Maxi Dress With Flat Sandals

A tiered maxi in cotton or gauze is the dress I reach for most on a beach trip. Gauze is woven loosely, so it breathes and dries fast, and it looks better crinkled than pressed, which is ideal for a suitcase. Blush, sage or pale buttercup are good colors against sand and sea. Flat leather sandals, a crescent woven bag, a thin pendant, small hoops and round sunglasses. It suits a seaside village, a wine tasting or a sunset on a terrace.
11. Black One-Piece With Gold Jewelry

A black one-piece carries jewelry well, which makes it a good base for dressing up by the pool. Choose one with a detail: a deep V, an open back or ruching at the waist. Layered gold chains, a cuff and hoops add warmth. Salt water and chlorine dull plated jewelry, so I wear solid gold or take pieces off before swimming. A sheer black chiffon sarong at the hips, flat black sandals, a rattan clutch and cat-eye sunglasses. From a daybed to lunch at a beach restaurant.
12. Sheer Wrap Dress Over Swimwear

A sheer wrap dress in white gauze or soft blush over a tonal one-piece is light enough for a hot morning. Tie it at the side, or leave it open over a bandeau bikini. Sheer fabric lets sun through, so I still put sunscreen on underneath. Flat beaded sandals, a shell necklace, a mini raffia bag and oval sunglasses. Fresh, dewy makeup. Great for a resort breakfast or a morning beach walk.
13. Striped Button-Down With White Linen Shorts

A blue and white striped button-down with crisp white linen shorts is a nautical look that holds up every year, as long as it stays to one striped piece. Tuck the shirt loosely at the front or knot it at the waist over a white one-piece. Leather espadrilles are comfortable for walking, but jute soles soak up water and come apart, so keep them off wet sand. A canvas tote, a silver bracelet and wayfarers. For ferry rides, boardwalks and seaside lunches.
14. Crochet Matching Set With Straw Accessories

A crochet set, crop top with a maxi skirt or top with high-waist shorts, brings texture to a beach wardrobe. Beige, caramel or terracotta suit sun-warmed skin. The open stitch breathes, but it also shows what is underneath, so I always wear a tonal bikini under it. Crochet stretches when hung, so fold it. A wide-brim straw hat, a round woven bag and flat leather sandals in a matching neutral, plus wooden beads or a shell pendant. For beach markets, sunset photos and dinner under string lights.
15. White Eyelet Dress With Espadrilles

White eyelet cotton is light and holds its shape in heat, and an A-line or shift cut keeps it from clinging. The eyelet holes show skin, so I wear a smooth nude strapless bra or a white triangle bikini top under it. Lace-up espadrille wedges give height and still cope with sandy paths, though I would choose a low wedge for cobblestones. A straw crossbody, pearl drops and a ponytail tied with a silk scarf. For brunch, a vineyard visit or a walk through an old coastal town.
16. Linen Shirt Dress With Leather Slides

A belted linen shirt dress in oatmeal or dove gray is my most practical dress for a trip: collar and buttons give it structure, and the linen breathes. Use the fabric belt or swap in a slim braided leather one. Shirt dresses gape between buttons at the bust, so I check that before packing and add a hidden safety pin if needed. Padded leather sandals, a rattan bag, slim rectangular sunglasses and a gold bangle. Roll the sleeves when it heats up. From a gallery in the morning to a wine bar later.
17. Off-The-Shoulder Sundress With Flat Sandals

An off-the-shoulder sundress shows the collarbone and shoulders, which is why it looks so good in late-afternoon light. A tropical print or a strong solid color both work. Elastic necklines slide down when you lift your arms, so I look for one with a firm band or a hidden silicone strip. Flat neutral sandals, tassel earrings in a matching color and a woven leather crossbody. For a sunset cruise or dinner by the beach. Shoulders burn quickly in this neckline, so sunscreen goes on first.
18. Bikini Top With Sheer Maxi Skirt

A structured bikini top with a sheer chiffon or mesh maxi skirt makes a striking evening look that still belongs at the beach. Choose a bandeau or sculpted bralette in black, white or metallic. The sheer skirt needs a solid bottom underneath, either a high-waist bikini brief or a short slip. Heeled strappy sandals sink into sand, so I bring a flat pair if dinner is on the beach itself. A small clutch, crystal drops and slicked-back hair. Made for a beach wedding or anniversary dinner, if the dress code allows it.
19. Two-Piece Linen Matching Set In Neutral Tones

A two-piece linen set of oversized shirt and wide-leg trousers in cream, sand or biscuit is a tonal outfit that looks deliberate. Wear the shirt open over a ribbed tank or bandeau, front-tucked. Light colors in linen can show underwear, so I keep a nude layer underneath. Woven leather mules, a basket bag and a thin tortoiseshell belt. Small hoops and one chain bracelet. My pick for exploring a town after a morning at the beach.
20. Leopard Print Cover-Up With Black Bikini

A leopard cover-up, whether a kimono, a sheer maxi or a sarong, adds a strong print over a plain black bikini. Leopard is mostly caramel, chocolate and black, so it goes with whatever neutrals you packed. Keep the rest black: flat sandals and a sleek crossbody. Round sunglasses and gold door-knocker hoops, with hair in a low slicked bun. I keep the print to one piece; two leopard items look like a costume. Poolside, at a beach club or out in the evening.
21. High-Waist Bikini With Midi Skirt

A high-waist bikini under a light midi skirt has a retro, pin-up feel and is still comfortable to walk in. Choose a skirt in a solid or subtle stripe that ties at the waist and falls to mid-calf. High-waist bottoms cover the navel and stay put in the waves better than low cuts. Flat espadrilles or white canvas sneakers, a cropped denim jacket or open linen shirt for wind, a straw shoulder bag and a scarf in the ponytail. Boardwalks, open-air concerts and an afternoon of exploring.
22. Sporty Bikini With White Flowy Pants

A sporty bikini in coral, aqua or lime with white flowy pants is built for an active beach day. The pants should be light, wide and have a drawstring waist that pulls on over swimwear. A rash guard or cropped zip top over the bikini gives sun protection in the water. White slides or sport sandals, a waterproof crossbody bag and polarized sport sunglasses. I avoid white pants that are thin enough to turn see-through when splashed. For volleyball, paddleboarding or a run along the shore.
23. Neutral Tone Linen Dress With Leather Slides

A midi linen dress in oatmeal, stone or greige hangs away from the body, which keeps you cool. Belt it with a thin leather tie or leave it loose as a shift. Linen softens with every wash and the color fades slightly in strong sun, so I dry it in the shade. Tan leather slides and a matching tote, a wooden bangle and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Change the accessories and it covers a cafe morning, a gallery and a market stroll.
24. Open-Knit Cardigan Over One-Piece Swimsuit

An open-knit cardigan in cotton or a light wool blend is the layer I bring for breezy mornings and air-conditioned restaurants. Wear it open over a black, white or khaki one-piece with linen shorts in a matching neutral. Cotton knits get heavy and stretched when wet, so it stays off once you swim. Woven mules, a large canvas tote, studs and a fine chain bracelet. Sunrise walks, reading under an umbrella, breakfast straight from the sand.
25. White Linen Shirt With Denim Cutoff Shorts

A white linen button-down over a bikini top with denim cutoffs is the relaxed beach outfit I never leave home without. Roll the sleeves, leave the shirt mostly open and half-tuck to show the waist. Denim stays heavy and wet for hours, so I change out of the cutoffs if I plan to swim and sit around after. Leather flip-flops or slides, a straw shoulder bag, round retro sunglasses and a leather wrap bracelet. Beach bonfires, barbecues and coastal road trips.
26. Scarf Top With White Wide-Leg Trousers

A printed silk scarf folded into a triangle and tied as a halter makes a top from something that packs into nothing. Pair it with high-waist white wide-leg trousers in a fluid fabric. Double-knot both ties and tuck the ends, because silk knots slip. Add a cream linen blazer or a light cardigan over the shoulders for evening, and metallic strappy heels with a simple clutch. Gold cuffs and a sleek low ponytail. It goes from a gallery to a rooftop dinner, and the scarf takes no room in the suitcase.
27. Wide-Leg Jumpsuit With Wedge Espadrilles

A wide-leg jumpsuit in linen, Tencel or soft crepe is a one-piece outfit that packs flat. Pick a defined waist, by tie belt or smocking, and a V-neck. Wedge espadrilles give height without sinking into sand or cobbles. Jumpsuits are awkward on a beach with sandy changing rooms, so I wear mine in the evening rather than as a cover-up. Layered gold chains, thin bangles, a woven clutch and round sunglasses. For a sunset dinner or vineyard tour.
28. Striped Linen Shirt And Wide-Leg Pants Set

A striped linen shirt and wide-leg pants set is nautical with a softer touch. Muted stripes in blue, sand and ivory look calmer than high-contrast navy and white. Wear the shirt open over a white one-piece or a ribbed tank. The set gives you three outfits: together, shirt with shorts, pants with a tank. Tan leather sandals, a woven clutch and a navy silk scarf in a low ponytail. Small gold knots and a leather watch. Boat days, promenades and resort breakfasts.
29. Tropical Print Maxi Dress With Heeled Sandals

A tropical print maxi dress in palm leaves, hibiscus or a painterly floral is for the night you want to dress up. Saturated colors against a dark or neutral base look richer than pastel prints. Floor length plus heels means the hem should clear the ground in those shoes; I check before packing. Neutral metallic or nude strappy heels, gold statement earrings, a gold cuff and a small rattan clutch. Resort dinners and beach wedding receptions.
30. Polka Dot Bikini With Matching Sarong

A polka dot bikini with a matching sheer sarong is a vintage-inspired poolside outfit. Navy on white or black on cream are the classic versions. Tie the sarong at the hip as a short wrap skirt, or over one shoulder as a halter dress when you want cover. White leather slides and a white canvas tote. Red lipstick and cat-eye sunglasses suit the retro mood, and a strand of pearls adds an unexpected touch. I take pearls off before swimming; chlorine and salt dull them.
31. Metallic One-Piece With Sheer Cover-Up

A bronze or champagne metallic one-piece reflects light and warms the skin tone. Over it, a sheer black or ivory cover-up dress. Metallic swim fabric can crack where it folds and loses shine in chlorine, so rinse it in fresh water after every swim and lay it flat. Metallic strappy flat sandals and a slim clutch, sharp earrings and slicked-back hair. From a cabana afternoon to the resort bar.
32. Canvas Tote With Striped Beach Dress

A roomy canvas tote is the most useful bag on a beach trip, and it suits a striped midi dress in blue and white. Choose a relaxed fit, short sleeves and a mid-calf hem. White canvas sneakers or flat espadrilles for walking. The tote takes your towel, book, water and a spare layer. Canvas shows sunscreen and sand marks, so I prefer a darker trim or wash it after the trip. A blue and white silk scarf on the handle, silver hoops and wayfarers. Travel days, ferries and seaside towns on foot.
33. Boho Crochet Dress With Fringe Details

A crochet mini or midi dress with a fringe hem has a bohemian mood, and the open weave keeps you cool. Wear it over a bandeau bikini or a nude strapless bodysuit for coverage. Fringe tangles in the wash, so I hand-rinse and dry it flat with the fringe combed straight. Flat gladiator or slide sandals, thin layered chains, beaded bracelets, a suede crossbody and a floppy tan felt hat. Beach festivals, outdoor concerts and dinners at open-air cafes.
34. High-Waist Shorts With Ruffled Crop Top

High-waist linen shorts with a ruffled crop top in a matching pastel are sweet without being childish when the colors are soft. Lavender, powder blue or blush. The ruffle frames the neckline, and the high waist shows where the waist is. Crop tops and high-waist shorts should meet or nearly meet; a big gap of midriff changes the feel. Flat strappy sandals, a mini woven bag, pearl studs, a delicate bracelet and a half-up style with a bow or scrunchie. A daytime beach party or a seaside lunch.
35. Wrap Dress With Straw Clutch Bag

A wrap dress in a light floral or solid jewel tone adjusts to your waist with its tie, which makes it one of the easiest dresses to pack. Wrap fronts can open in sea wind, so I add a small hidden snap or a safety pin at the cross-over. Wear it over a smooth nude layer or a triangle bikini top. Flat tan strappy sandals, a round straw clutch with a beaded clasp, gold drops and a thin bracelet. For brunch with a view, a garden party or dinner on a terrace.
What Sunscreen, Salt and Chlorine Do to Your Clothes
Beach trips are hard on clothes, and the damage often shows only after you get home. A few habits during the trip keep pieces wearable for many more summers.
Swimwear
Rinse every suit in cool fresh water right after swimming, even if you only went in the sea. Chlorine and salt break down elastic, and that is what makes suits sag. Lay them flat in the shade to dry; direct sun fades color and wringing stretches the fabric.
Whites and linens
Some sunscreens leave yellow or orange marks on white fabric, especially after a wash. I let sunscreen absorb fully before dressing and pretreat any marks as soon as I spot them, rather than washing on hot. Linen in strong sun can fade along the folds, so I dry it inside out.
Silk, straw and leather
Silk spots with water, so blot rather than rub. Raffia and straw go brittle when soaked; brush off sand, let them dry in their shape and store them without weight on top. Leather sandals that get wet should dry slowly away from heat, then get a little conditioner once you are home.
Fabric, Color and One Layer Over Swimwear
A good beach wardrobe comes down to fabric, color and layers. Linen, cotton gauze, silk and crochet keep you cool and look polished; a palette of two neutrals and one accent color means every piece works with every other; and one light layer over swimwear turns a swimsuit into an outfit for lunch. Plan whole outfits before you pack, then remove anything that only works once. I usually come home having worn everything, which is how I know the suitcase was right.
