A couples costume only works if both of you still like it at eleven at night, when the shoes have started to pinch and the headpiece has slipped twice. I plan pairs around that moment, not the first photo. The ideas below run from pop culture duos and food jokes to old cartoon favourites, classic monsters and quick homemade concepts, and each one comes with the base clothes, hair or wig, makeup, props and shoes I'd actually use. Roles swap easily, and any fitted piece can be traded for a looser one, so treat them as starting points for the two of you rather than fixed assignments.

How a Pair Reads From Across the Room
Most couples costumes fail in the same way: each half is fine alone, but stand the two of you at opposite ends of a party and nobody connects you. When I plan a pair, I look for three ties and try to get at least two of them.
- A shared colour. Even when the characters are different, one repeated shade, like the yellow on a bee and on a beekeeper's gloves, pulls the outfits together in every photo.
- Matching effort. If one of you wears a full foam tunic and the other is in jeans and a T-shirt, the pair looks lopsided. Keep the build roughly even, or make the simpler half bolder in colour.
- One tell each. Every character needs a single detail that names it at a glance: Mario's cap, Morticia's centre parting, the lifeguard's red float. Put it at head or chest height, where people look first.
Then do the test I never skip. Stand side by side in front of a long mirror, step back as far as the room allows and ask whether a stranger would get the joke. If not, it's usually the tell that's missing, not more accessories.
1. Barbie And Ken Couples Costume

Pink is the whole costume here, so I match the shade before anything else; a cool bubblegum dress next to a salmon handbag looks like two different ideas. One of you wears a hot-pink mini or midi dress with a matching bow, simple jewellery and pink heels or platform sneakers, plus a smooth blonde wig or natural hair set in soft waves, rosy makeup and a glossy pink lip. The other takes a striped beach shirt, pastel shorts, a white belt, clean sneakers, a short blonde wig and a little bronzer. Pink sunglasses, a small handbag or a toy surfboard are the props. Cheap blonde wigs go shiny under party lights, so I brush a little dry shampoo through the lengths to knock back the plastic sheen. For more drama, the western version swaps in pink denim, fringe, cowboy hats and white boots.
2. Gomez And Morticia Couples Costume

Morticia lives or dies on the hem. I look for a long black dress with fitted sleeves and a hem that flares softly at the floor, worn with low black heels so she can glide rather than stomp. A long, centre-parted black wig, pale foundation, smoky eyes, deep red lipstick and one artificial red rose are all she needs. Gomez is a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, dark tie, polished black shoes, slicked-back hair and a pencil mustache drawn on with a brow pencil, which stays put far better than a stick-on one once you start eating. If there's dancing, pick a dress with some stretch and cushioned shoes. The black-and-white palette carries the pair, and an affectionate tango pose does the rest.
3. Shrek And Fiona Couples Costume

Green face paint is the part people regret, so decide early how much skin you really want to cover. Shrek is a cream tunic, a brown textured vest, plaid pants, a wide belt and brown boots, with a green bald cap or a green beanie carrying soft ogre ears. Fiona wears a floor-length green velvet-style dress, a gold belt, flat brown shoes, a long red braided wig, a small crown, ears and matching green makeup. Keep any prosthetics light and leave the eyes and mouth clear, or the paint cracks every time you laugh. I'd take the beanie with felt ears over a bald cap for a long night; it's warmer and far kinder to your hairline. A plush donkey or a handmade swamp sign is the prop everyone gets.
4. Mario And Princess Peach Couples Costume

The red cap with its white circle is what makes Mario read, so I cut the circle from white felt and stitch it on; felt glued to a polyester cap tends to lift at the edges by the end of the night. Under it go blue overalls, a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, brown work boots and a brown mustache, drawn on or a soft adhesive one. Peach is a pink puff-sleeve dress with a darker pink overskirt, white gloves, blue earrings, pink flats or low heels, a long blonde wig in loose curls and a lightweight gold crown, with soft pink makeup and a touch of blue eye shadow. Plush mushrooms or gold star cutouts are enough to carry. Anything bulkier gets left on a chair within the hour.
5. Woody And Bo Peep Couples Costume

Woody's cow-print vest is the detail people spot first, and it's easy to make from a fleece remnant cut around an old vest, since fleece doesn't fray. Wear it over a yellow plaid shirt and blue jeans, with a red neckerchief, a simple brown belt, brown boots and a wide-brim cowboy hat, and a cardboard sheriff badge pinned on. Bo Peep takes a pale blue jumpsuit or a full skirt with a fitted bodice, a pink waist sash, a matching cape, comfortable blue flats, a blonde wig with a side braid and rosy cheeks. Her shepherd's staff is the thing I'd shorten. A full-length crook catches on doorframes and other people's elbows, so keep it short and decorative.
6. Fred And Wilma Flintstone Couples Costume

This is one of the cheapest pairs on the list, because both outfits are basically cut jersey, which doesn't fray and moves with you. Fred's orange knee-length tunic gets black felt triangles, a blue necktie, brown shorts and brown sandals, with a short black wig or neat natural hair. Wilma is a white one-shoulder dress, an oversized white bead necklace, white or nude flats, a bright red wig pinned into a high bun and red lipstick with softly defined eyes. I tack the felt spots on with a few hand stitches at the points; fabric glue on jersey stiffens and cracks as the knit stretches. A light foam club only makes sense if the venue allows props, and a cardboard stone-age newspaper is the safer bet.
7. Scooby And Shaggy Couples Costume

If you both want sneakers and a hoodie, this is the pair. Shaggy is a loose green T-shirt, brown flared pants, casual black shoes, a shaggy light-brown wig and, if you like, a tiny chin beard drawn in with brow pencil. Scooby builds on a brown hoodie and joggers with black felt spots held on by removable fabric tape, so the hoodie goes back into the drawer afterwards. Floppy ears, a soft tail, brown sneakers and a blue collar with a handmade gold tag do the rest, with brown makeup only around the nose. I sew the tail to a belt rather than pinning it to the joggers, because a pinned tail drags the waistband down every time someone sits on it. An empty decorated snack box or an oversized cardboard sandwich is the prop.
8. Bob Ross And Happy Tree Couples Costume

The wig is everything here. A full, curly brown wig is what makes the painter read, and I'd spend on that before the shirt, which can be any pale blue button-down with relaxed jeans and brown shoes. Add a soft costume beard and a cardboard palette with colourful painted circles. The happy tree starts with a brown shirt and pants, then layers of green felt leaves stitched to a vest or cape, green or brown sneakers, a leafy headband, green eye makeup and small leaf shapes on the cheeks. Felt leaves overlap better if you cut them in two greens and attach them from the bottom row up, like roof tiles. Leave wet paint and real tools at home; a clean foam brush and a small canvas say the same thing.
9. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couples Costume

Two slices of bread, two fillings, and you're done. I cut both bread tunics from tan felt or lightweight foam board to wear over neutral shirts, comfortable pants and matching sneakers, leaving the arm and neck openings generous so nobody's shoulders are pinched. One gets a caramel-coloured panel, the other purple or red, with matching beanies and a little makeup in each filling colour. Labelling the removable panels 'peanut butter' and 'jelly' lets the joke land from across a room. Foam board creases the first time you sit in a car, so if you're driving to the party, felt over a thin layer of batting holds its shape better. Big rounded foam spreaders make a good prop, and you can layer as much as the weather needs underneath.
10. Avocado And Toast Couples Costume

The avocado is a green sweatshirt, dark green pants, green sneakers and a big pear-shaped felt panel with a round brown pit in the middle, topped with a green headband or beanie and fresh green eye shadow. The toast is tan clothing, comfortable brown shoes, a tan cap and a bread-shaped tunic with a darker crust border, scattered with small green felt avocado slices. I make the pit from lightly stuffed felt so it sits proud of the panel; a flat brown circle disappears in photos. Reusable shopping bags or light breakfast plates can come along as props. Keep both shapes rounded, because square foam corners poke whoever is standing next to you in a crowded kitchen.
11. Bee And Beekeeper Couples Costume

The beekeeper's veil is the part I'd change from the real thing. Instead of draping mesh over the face, gather soft mesh around a wide-brim hat and let it fall behind the ears, so you can see the steps and drink without lifting it. Cream coveralls, beige work boots and gardening gloves finish the keeper. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt over black leggings or pants, ankle boots, a yellow tulle skirt if wanted, translucent wings, an antenna headband and sunny yellow eye makeup. Wire-framed wings bend the first time you lean back in a chair, so I tie them on with elastic that lets them flex. A bucket labelled 'honey' or a plush bee beats real food as a prop. Repeating one yellow on both people ties the pair together without dressing alike.
12. Chef And Lobster Couples Costume

Red-on-red needs one shade, so I buy the lobster's sweatshirt, pants and sneakers together and check them side by side in daylight; reds from different dye lots fight each other badly. Add a padded red tail, soft claw mittens, an antenna headband and red accents on the cheeks instead of full face paint. The chef wears a white double-breasted jacket, black pants, nonslip black shoes and a tall white chef hat with the hair tucked under, plus a curled mustache or rosy cheeks. Carry a clean menu, a serving tray or a smooth wooden spoon, and leave real knives and heavy pans in the kitchen. Claw mittens are the snag on a date night: you can't hold a fork in them, so make them slip off and clip to a belt.
13. Astronaut And Alien Couples Costume

A cardboard helmet looks great in the doorway and becomes a nuisance by the second drink, so I build it with the visor open and assume it will come off. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit trimmed with silver tape, homemade mission patches and a wide belt, white sneakers and silver gloves. The alien gets a metallic green or silver bodysuit under a short tunic or an oversized jacket, platform sneakers, an antenna headband, a green or silver wig, shimmery eye makeup and small star stickers. Silver tape loses its grip on cotton twill once a room warms up, so stitch down the ends of any long strips. A cardboard control panel or a battery-operated glowing orb is plenty, and nobody needs real electronics or a closed mask.
14. Sun And Moon Couples Costume

Gold and silver do the coordinating here, so I keep both metallics at a similar level of shine. A matte gold dress beside a mirror-bright silver jumpsuit looks accidental. The sun wears a flowing yellow or gold dress with matching flats and a ray headpiece cut from lightweight craft foam, with soft waves or a high ponytail, warm yellow eye shadow and a few face gems. The moon can wear a silver jumpsuit, a navy suit or a dark blue dress with silver shoes, a crescent headband, silver hair spray or a wig and tiny painted stars. Craft-foam rays droop on a warm night unless you back them with a strip of plastic canvas or thin wire. Battery string lights tucked into a belt or cape add a soft glow, as long as the pack is secured.
15. Rainbow And Cloud Couples Costume

The cloud is the trickier half. I glue fluffy polyester filling to a loose vest and soft cap, then keep it well away from the mouth and eyes, because loose fibres drift and you'd be breathing them all night. White clothing, silver or white shoes, pale blue makeup and felt raindrops dangling from the hem finish it. The rainbow is a striped multicolour dress, jumpsuit or coordinated shirt and pants with white sneakers, colourful hair clips, vivid eye shadow, a small rainbow headband and a curved cardboard rainbow covered in felt worn as a chest panel. A small blue umbrella with removable white fluff adds a little more weather. I'd save this pair for daytime parties and school or family events, where the soft colours suit the room.
16. Plug And Socket Couples Costume

The joke works best when you stand close, so I size the two panels to line up at the same chest height. One of you wears black long sleeves, pants and sneakers with a rectangular foam-board plug; the other wears matching black with a white or grey socket panel on the front. Make the prongs from soft silver fabric tubes stuffed with fibrefill, never rigid card, or they jab your partner every time you hug. Natural hair and graphic silver eyeliner connect the two. Battery fairy lights around both panels help in a dark room. Tuck the packs into small belt bags and keep every cord short, so nothing dangles near your feet.
17. Ringmaster And Lion Couples Costume

The mane is where I spend the time. A fluffy brown mane on a headband needs to sit back from the face and be anchored with a couple of bobby pins, or it slides over the eyes every time you look down. The lion wears a tan jumpsuit or matching sweatshirt and pants, brown sneakers, a soft tail, rounded ears and warm brown makeup around the nose and cheeks, kept cartoonish rather than realistic. The ringmaster gets a red tailcoat over a white shirt, black trousers, tall black boots, a small black top hat, gold trim, white gloves and a bold red lip or defined brows, plus a decorative ticket roll or a light foam hoop. Gold trim fused on with iron-on web lies flatter than glued braid and survives a coat check.
18. Farmer And Scarecrow Couples Costume

Most of this pair is already in someone's closet. The farmer wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots and a straw hat, with braids or hair tucked under the brim, natural makeup, a few painted freckles and a light basket of artificial vegetables. The scarecrow layers patched overalls over a flannel shirt with brown boots, a floppy hat, raffia tied loosely at the wrists, warm orange makeup, stitched lines around the mouth and a painted triangle nose. Raffia scratches bare skin, so I tie it over the shirt cuffs, and I use paper raffia rather than real straw, which sheds all over the host's floor. Two different plaids in the same earthy colours make the pair look planned without matching.
19. Lifeguard And Shark Couples Costume

Of all the pairings here, this one breathes best, which matters at a crowded house party. The lifeguard wears red athletic shorts, a white T-shirt with a handmade emblem, a red zip jacket, supportive white sneakers, sporty sunglasses and a sun-kissed finish, with a foam rescue float or a whistle on a secure lanyard. The shark is a grey hoodie with a soft dorsal fin, matching joggers, grey sneakers, white felt teeth around the hood opening and small side fins on the sleeves, with cool grey makeup and slicked hair. A floppy dorsal fin is the usual fail. I stuff it firmly with fibrefill and stitch a line up the middle so it stands. Keep the shark smiling, and add a layer under each if the evening cools.
20. Gardener And Flower Couples Costume

I'd pick one flower colour and commit to it. A petal collar in pink, purple and yellow at once just reads as confetti. The flower wears a green dress or green shirt and pants with matching flats or sneakers, a large felt petal collar or headpiece that leaves the face open in the centre, makeup in that one petal shade, small leaf details on the cheeks, a green ribbon belt and felt leaves on the sleeves for the stem. The gardener wears green overalls, a checked shirt, rubber boots, a wide-brim sun hat, gardening gloves, rosy makeup and a canvas apron full of artificial flowers, with a clean plastic watering can. Rubber boots get hot indoors, so for a long party I'd swap in plain ankle boots.
21. Pilot And Flight Attendant Couples Costume

This pair is mostly tailoring you may already own, which makes it a safe pick for a work costume day as well as a party. The pilot wears a navy blazer, white button-down, dark trousers, black shoes and a navy cap, with gold ribbon stripes on the cuffs and shoulders held by removable fabric tape so the blazer survives. The flight attendant wears a navy dress or a fitted blazer with a knee-length skirt, comfortable pumps or loafers, a bright neck scarf, a smooth bun and classic makeup with defined eyes and a red lip. I set the bun with a fine hair net and a few extra pins, because a sleek bun is the first thing to go fuzzy over a long evening. A small rolling suitcase, handmade boarding passes and a cardboard checklist are the props.
22. Detective And Mystery Novel Couples Costume

The book costume needs a spine, not just a cover. I cut the tunic as two cardboard panels joined at the shoulders with cloth tape, so it hangs like an open book and flexes as you walk. Decorate the front with a question mark, a dramatic made-up title and a keyhole, and wear it over black clothing and sneakers with black-and-white makeup and a ribbon-bookmark headband. Invent the title rather than copying a real cover. The detective wears a tan trench coat over dark trousers and a button-down, brown loafers, a checked cap, tidy hair and lightly defined brows, carrying a clear plastic magnifying glass and a small notebook of 'clues'. Side by side, the trench and the graphic panel tell the whole story.
23. 1980s Workout Couples Costume

Leg warmers and sweatbands are cheap, and they do more for the decade than any leotard. Both of you can wear bright tanks or cropped sweatshirts over fitted tees with leggings, bike shorts or running shorts, plus wristbands and supportive white high-tops. Tease the hair into a high ponytail or fluffy curls with temporary product, and go loud with blue, purple and pink eye makeup and bright blush. I give each person their own neon pairing and repeat one shared shade, often hot pink, so you look like a team rather than twins. Foam dumbbells, cardboard cassettes or small towels make easy props. Everything stretches, so wear this one if the night ends on a dance floor.
24. 1970s Disco Couples Costume

Sequins shed, scratch the inside of your arms and snag on everything, so I keep the sequined piece to one person and give the other a smooth metallic shirt. One wears bell-bottoms with a metallic button-down, platform-style shoes and oversized tinted glasses; the other a sequined jumpsuit or flared pants with a halter top and block heels. Big curls, feathered hair or a rounded wig set the decade, with shimmery eye shadow, glossy lips and a few face gems. Coordinate through one or two shared colours rather than identical pieces. A mirror-ball handbag or a cardboard record is all you need to carry. Wide legs move well when you dance, but hem them to your shoe height so nobody trips.
25. 1920s Flapper And Gentleman Couples Costume

Fringe dresses are heavy and they move, which is the point, but cheap ones are sewn so loosely that strands drop all night. Before wearing one, I run a line of small stitches along the top of each fringe row. The flapper adds a long faux-pearl necklace, opaque tights, low Mary Janes, a bobbed wig or finger waves, a jewelled headband, smoky eyes and berry lipstick. The gentleman wears a dark three-piece suit, white shirt, bow tie, suspenders, polished lace-ups, slicked hair and a pocket watch on a chain, with a folded newspaper or a dance card as his prop. I leave out drink-themed accessories and let the tailoring carry the era in black, gold, ivory and burgundy.
26. Danny And Sandy Couples Costume

This pair can come almost entirely from closet pieces, which is why it's such a good last-minute plan. Danny is a black faux-leather jacket, a plain white T-shirt, dark cuffed jeans, black lace-ups and glossy swept-back hair, with natural makeup. Sandy wears black high-waisted pants, an off-the-shoulder black top, a fitted belt and red low heels or flats, plus a curly blonde wig, winged liner and red lipstick. Off-the-shoulder tops creep upward all evening; a strip of silicone gripper tape inside the neckline keeps it where you put it. For a sweeter daytime version, use a pastel cardigan, a full skirt and white sneakers, and carry a yearbook or a homemade school pennant.
27. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couples Costume

The striped suit is the expensive half if you buy it and the easiest half to fake. I'd mask stripes onto an old pale suit with tape and fabric paint, or wear striped trousers with a plain black jacket. Add a white shirt, black boots, a messy green-tinted wig and pale makeup with soft grey shading around the eyes, stylised rather than gruesome. Lydia wears a layered red dress with ruffled sleeves, red tights, black ankle boots, a long black wig with short pointed bangs, pale makeup, dark liner and muted red lips, carrying a vintage-style camera or a painted cardboard handbook. If the red dress feels too formal, her black dress, wide-brim hat and camera are just as clear, and much easier to wear to dinner.
28. Frankenstein And Bride Couples Costume

The Bride's tall hair is the hard part, and I'd build it on a wig rather than natural hair. Back-comb a black wig up over a foam cone or a large bun form, then add the white streaks with temporary colour spray, which saves hours of teasing and washes out. Under it go a long white dress, white flats, a draped shawl, pale makeup, arched brows and deep plum lipstick. The monster wears a dark oversized blazer, black shirt, cropped trousers, heavy platform boots, a flat-topped black wig, green face makeup, strong brows and soft grey contouring. Silver fabric patches at the neck stand in for hardware and won't dig in when you turn your head. A slightly stiff walk sells it for both of you, no graphic makeup required.
29. Alice And Mad Hatter Couples Costume

The Hatter's top hat should look mismatched on purpose, and that part is easy: I cover a cheap felt top hat with paper tags, ribbons and fabric scraps, then tuck a '10/6' card into the band, the way the original drawings show it. Pair it with a colourful tailcoat, a patterned vest, cropped trousers, bright socks, sturdy lace-ups, an orange curly wig, colourful eye makeup and a big bow tie. Alice is a blue knee-length dress over a white blouse, a white apron, striped tights, black Mary Janes, a blonde wig with a black headband and pink cheeks, with a teacup or a handmade 'curious' sign. Tall hats topple when you lean over a table, so I sew on a thin elastic that sits under the back of the hair.
30. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couples Costume

The cape does most of the work, so get the red right. A clear, bright red reads in a dim room, while burgundy turns brown. Red wears a white blouse, a black or brown skirt, the hooded cape and sturdy ankle boots, with waves or braids, rosy makeup and a woven basket of artificial flowers. The wolf is grey pants, a charcoal shirt, grey sneakers, a faux-fur vest, soft ears, a fluffy tail and fingerless paw gloves, with grey and brown makeup on the nose and forehead only. Faux fur sheds hardest at its cut edges, so I shake the vest outside and lint-roll the edges before the night. A shared plaid scarf links the two, and the wolf stays friendly.
31. Pac-Man And Ghost Couples Costume

Big foam circles are harder to wear than they look. I cut the Pac-Man disc no wider than the shoulders and hang it from two wide ribbon straps so it doesn't swing round when you turn, with the triangular mouth taken out of one side. Yellow pants, a yellow sweatshirt, matching sneakers, a yellow cap and simple golden makeup go with it. The ghost wears a poncho in one of the ghost colours with a scalloped hem, matching pants and sneakers, big white-and-blue felt eyes on the front and a beanie over natural hair. A string of white foam dots makes a good game path to carry between you. Keep both pieces short enough to climb stairs in.
32. Salt And Pepper Couples Costume

This is the pair I'd suggest when you have one evening to make something. Both of you wear black shirts, pants and comfortable sneakers under cylindrical white or grey tunics, one marked 'S' and the other 'P' in big removable letters. The shaker tops are lightweight caps painted silver with black dots, hair tucked underneath, plus monochrome makeup with silver eye shadow or graphic liner. Poster board tubes crush the moment you sit, so I make the body from felt with a stiff ring of card only at the top and bottom. An oversized recipe card or a little spice basket is a nice shared prop, and the roomy shapes leave space for a warm layer underneath.
33. Milk And Cookies Couples Costume

Width is the main rule I follow for food tunics: no wider than your own shoulders, or you'll be turning sideways through every doorway. The milk wears white pants, a white shirt and white sneakers under a rectangular carton tunic with blue panels, a soft cap shaped like the folded carton top, fresh blue-and-white makeup and a striped straw prop. The cookie wears tan clothing and brown shoes under a round felt tunic scattered with dark brown felt chips, a tan beret and warm brown makeup with freckles. Cut the chips in uneven shapes; perfect circles look like polka dots. A small cardboard serving tray carried between you makes the link clear without any signs.
34. Soap And Loofah Couples Costume

The loofah is the fun half to make. I cut tulle into long strips, gather them and stitch them in tight rows onto a fitted T-shirt with shorts, or onto a comfortable dress, and the more rows you pack in, the fuller it looks. Pick one tulle colour and match the sneakers to it, then wear the hair in a high bun with bright eye makeup and a thick white fabric loop at the shoulder for the hanging cord. Keep the tulle above the knee and away from the face, since it catches on everything. The soap is white or pastel clothing and sneakers under a rounded rectangular foam tunic with a simple handmade label, a pastel cap, glossy makeup and felt bubbles across the shoulders.
35. Copy And Paste Couples Costume

If you have ten minutes, this is your pair. Wear matching black shirts, pants and sneakers, then attach a big white 'COPY' label to one shirt and 'PASTE' to the other. I cut the letters from white felt; paper labels curl and tear by the second hour. Cardboard keyboard-key headbands with the shortcut symbols, or oversized foam keycaps, add the detail, along with graphic black-and-white liner. Small paper document icons on the copy costume and matching duplicates on the paste one finish the joke. Make the letters big enough to read from across the room. Any couple can wear it, and it goes happily over a warm jumper for an outdoor event.
What a Date Night Does to a Costume
A party where you stand around is easy. A date night usually means a car, a restaurant booth or a bar stool, a dance floor and at least one trip to a small bathroom, and each of those finds the weak spot in a costume.
Sitting down
Rigid foam board and poster board fold the first time you sit. If dinner is part of the plan, make food panels from felt over thin batting, or fix them with snaps so they come off and hang on the back of the chair.
Eating and drinking
Claws, gloves and full masks all have to come off to eat, so I design them to clip to a belt instead of ending up in a pile next to the bread basket. Drawn-on mustaches and brows outlast adhesive ones once food and drink are involved.
The bathroom
Jumpsuits, overalls and anything layered over a bodysuit mean undressing to the waist in a tiny stall. If you can, pick overalls with side buttons, or build the look from a top and trousers in the same colour.
Dancing
Hot glue is the first thing to let go when a room warms up and you're moving. Anything that gets pulled, sat on or swung, like tails, wings and fringe, should be stitched, even with a few rough hand stitches.
When Only One of You Can Sew
Usually one person in a couple is happy with a needle and the other isn't, and that's fine. Give the maker the headpiece, the tunic and anything that needs shaping. Give the other person the jobs that need no skill: shopping the base clothes in the right colour, cutting felt letters and spots, holding pieces while glue sets and testing the makeup on the inside of the wrist a day ahead.
I'd also have the person who didn't make it wear everything for half an hour a few days early, walking, sitting and reaching up. The wearer notices the itchy seam the maker never feels. If neither of you sews, stick with the pairs built on closet clothes, like Danny and Sandy, the pilot and flight attendant, the farmer and scarecrow, or copy and paste, where fabric tape, safety pins and felt do the rest.
A Couple Look You Can Both Wear Until Midnight
The costume that wins the night is the one neither of you is fiddling with by ten o'clock. Character pairs, food jokes, quick homemade ideas, vintage looks and monsters are all here, and almost any of them can be bent to suit your sizes, your coverage preferences and who wants which role. Before you settle, I'd think through the weather, the venue, how far you'll walk and how long you'll be in it, then plan light props, secure headpieces, breathable makeup and shoes you trust. After that, add one small detail that belongs only to you two, an inside joke on a label or a colour you both love, so the pair doesn't look like anyone else's.
