The hardest part of a couple costume is usually agreeing on one. The next hardest is making sure one person isn't up until 2 a.m. gluing felt while the other just puts on a hat. I've put together fifty pairings here, from storybook and video game characters to monsters, decades and puns, and for each I list the clothes, hair, makeup, shoes and a prop or two. Nearly all of them can be swapped between partners or adjusted for different bodies and comfort levels. Match your colours for a tidy result, or lean into opposites when you want the contrast to be the joke.

Sharing the Build So Nobody Sews Alone
When one partner does all the making, the costume tends to show it: one half is detailed and the other is an afterthought. I split the jobs by skill rather than by character.
Jobs for whoever owns the sewing machine
- Hems, sleeves and anything that has to fit a body, like Morticia's dress or Fiona's velvet gown.
- Stitching felt letters, patches and appliqué that would peel if glued.
- Attaching tails, wings and ears so they're anchored to a seam.
Jobs for the partner who doesn't sew
- Cutting and painting foam and cardboard props, like Ghostbusters packs or sun rays.
- Hunting thrift stores for suits, overalls and dresses in the right colours.
- Practising the makeup and buying wigs, then brushing and styling them.
Start a full week ahead. Fabric paint and glue need a day or two to cure, and a dry run in the finished costumes always turns up a strap that's too short or a hat that won't stay on.
1. Morticia And Gomez Addams Couple Costume

Morticia's whole costume is one dress: floor length, black, with long sleeves that flare at the wrist. Add a straight black wig, smoky eyes, deep red lipstick, pointed black shoes and a single red rose. Gomez wears a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, dark tie, polished shoes and slicked hair, with a thin mustache and a pocket watch. If I'm sewing those flared sleeves, I add a tiny elastic loop at the middle finger so they don't drag through dinner. Shared black ties you together, and choosing stretch fabric means you can stand around for hours without fidgeting.
2. Barbie And Ken Couple Costume

This Barbie and Ken leans retro-sporty rather than doll-perfect. One of you wears a hot-pink fit-and-flare dress, a cropped jacket, hoops, white sneakers and a high blonde ponytail, with glossy pink makeup and a small pastel bag. The other wears a colourful striped shirt, white shorts or trousers, a light varsity jacket, white sneakers and tidy blonde hair. Pink sunglasses or a toy surfboard add the playful bit. I'd pick one pink, one turquoise, one yellow and white, and refuse anything outside those four; it's what makes two separate outfits look like a set in photos. Swap the clothes between you if you like.
3. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couple Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia in her red wedding dress are as theatrical as couple costumes get. He wears a black-and-white striped suit, white shirt, black boots and a messy pale wig with green touches, plus white face makeup, soft shading and a bit of playful contouring, no wounds needed. She wears a layered red tulle dress, red ankle boots, a big red veil and a dark tousled wig, with pale skin, smoky eyes and a fabric bouquet. Tulle is easy to gather but it crushes flat in a car, so I store it hanging and fluff it with a cool hairdryer before leaving. A red midi dress with a tulle cape is the easier version.
4. Shrek And Fiona Couple Costume

Shrek and Fiona are a costume you can actually relax in. He wears a cream tunic, brown vest, plaid trousers, brown boots and a green bald cap or hood with rounded ears; she wears a long green velvet dress, dark flats or boots, a braided auburn wig, green ears and a small jewelled headband. Both of you wear a thin, even layer of green face paint. Velvet has a nap, so when I cut a dress like Fiona's I lay every pattern piece the same direction, or one panel looks a shade lighter than the rest. A plush donkey is the best prop here, and thermals fit under both outfits.
5. Mario And Luigi Couple Costume

Mario and Luigi are mostly overalls, which is why I like them for a busy couple. One of you wears blue denim overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, the other blue overalls over green. Add red and green caps with felt initials, white gloves, brown work boots and mustaches if you want them. I cut the letter from stiff felt and stitch it around the edge, since glued felt on a curved cap peels after an hour. Tuck your hair in so the cap stays put, and carry foam coins or a plush mushroom rather than anything big. Roll the cuffs or belt the overalls to fit, and flat boots make this good for a long night out.
6. Princess Peach And Mario Couple Costume

Princess Peach next to Mario puts the pink and the primary colours side by side. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve maxi dress, blue earrings, a small gold crown, white gloves and pink flats, with a long curled blonde wig and fresh pink makeup. Mario wears blue overalls, a red top, red cap, white gloves, brown boots and a neat mustache. A plush mushroom or a light gold star gives you a shared prop. If a gown feels restrictive at a restaurant, I'd swap to a pink midi with a tulle overskirt you can lift off when you sit. Pin the wig firmly and choose a crown that bends rather than snaps.
7. Harley Quinn And Joker Couple Costume

Harley Quinn and the Joker can be built from regular clothes in the right colours. Harley wears a red-and-black bomber jacket, matching shorts over opaque tights, lace-up ankle boots and pigtails with washable red and blue tips, plus fun eye makeup and a deck of oversized foam cards. The Joker wears a purple suit, green vest, patterned tie, black dress shoes and green hair spray, with pale makeup, dark eyes and an exaggerated red smile kept clean. Coloured hair spray rubs onto collars, so I let it dry fully and set it with a little regular hairspray before getting dressed. Pin matching card suits on both jackets and leave any weapon-like props at home.
8. Daphne And Fred Couple Costume

Daphne and Fred are built from retro pieces you'll wear again. Daphne wears a purple mini or knee-length dress, green neck scarf, lavender tights, pink or purple flats and a long red wig with a smooth headband, with soft lavender eyes and a magnifying glass. Fred wears a white sweater over a blue collared shirt, blue trousers, brown loafers and an orange ascot, with neat blonde hair or a short wig. A folder marked with a mystery symbol works as a shared prop. I'd sew both scarves from the same lightweight cotton so they tie into the same soft knot. Crisp, slightly retro fabrics hold this palette together better than anything shiny.
9. Velma And Shaggy Couple Costume

Velma and Shaggy come together from the closet in an evening. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red flats and square black glasses, with a brown bob wig, natural makeup and a notebook or magnifying glass. Shaggy wears a loose green tee, brown flared pants, black or brown sneakers and a shaggy light-brown wig, with a little chin shading and an oversized cardboard sandwich or plush dog. Push the colours a little brighter than you think, since muted orange and green get lost in dim bars. Stretchy separates and flat shoes keep both of you comfortable all night.
10. Wednesday And Enid Couple Costume

Wednesday and Enid are a pair built on refusing to meet in the middle. Wednesday wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, opaque tights, black platform loafers and two long braids, with pale matte makeup, defined brows and a straight face. Enid wears a bright striped sweater, pastel pleated skirt, colourful tights, chunky sneakers and a blonde wig with pink and blue tips, plus shimmery eyes and short, practical costume claws. I starch Wednesday's collar or cut it with a layer of interfacing so it stays crisp instead of curling at the points. A black school bag and a rainbow backpack link you, and the school-uniform outline holds the pair together.
11. Coraline And Wybie Couple Costume

Coraline and Wybie are the rain-ready pair on this list, which is handy in October. Coraline wears a yellow hooded raincoat over dark jeans, striped socks and blue rain boots, with a short blue wig, a few freckles, a blue satchel and a plush black cat or a felt doll with ordinary stitched eyes. Wybie wears a black rain jacket, dark cargo pants, gloves, sturdy black sneakers or boots and curly dark hair, with a vintage-style camera on a strap. Blue wigs show every tangle, so I brush it with a wide comb and a little wig spray before each wear. Keep both faces uncovered; that yellow coat is the focal point.
12. Alice And Mad Hatter Couple Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter need a palette or they turn into noise. Alice wears a pale blue knee-length dress, white apron, striped tights, black flats and a black ribbon headband over blonde waves, with rosy makeup and a small teacup. The Hatter wears a colourful tailcoat, patterned vest, cropped trousers, bright socks, lace-up boots and an oversized top hat, with a curly orange wig and coral-and-purple eye makeup. A pocket watch or a stack of cardboard teacups adds character. I'd limit every pattern on both of you to blue, orange, green and burgundy. Pick those four, and thrifted pieces suddenly look chosen rather than random.
13. Peter Pan And Tinker Bell Couple Costume

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell are simple green separates and good shoes. Peter wears a jagged-hem green tunic over dark green leggings, a brown belt, soft ankle boots and a pointed felt cap, with short auburn hair or a cropped wig. Tinker Bell wears a leaf-shaped green mini or skater dress over matching shorts, translucent wings, green flats with pom-poms and a blonde bun wig, plus gold shimmer and a small glowing wand. Felt is my pick for the tunic and cap because the zigzag edge won't fray. Choose flexible wings that fold when someone brushes past, and a little shared gold glitter ties the two greens together.
14. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couple Costume

Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf balance a tidy red outfit against a soft animal look. She wears a white blouse, a black or brown corset-style vest, red skirt, opaque tights, comfortable boots and a hooded red cape, with braids, rosy makeup and a basket of fabric flowers. He wears gray trousers, a gray textured sweater, furry shoe covers, a flexible tail and a gray-eared headband, with gray-brown makeup at the brows and cheeks and no sharp teeth. When I sew a cape like hers, I cut it as a half circle, which hangs in soft folds and doesn't slide off the shoulders like a straight rectangle does. A plaid scarf on the wolf hints at the woods.
15. Beauty And Beast Couple Costume

Beauty and the Beast is the one I'd wear to a dressy date. Beauty wears a golden-yellow ball gown, or a flowing midi with a tulle overskirt, yellow flats, fine gloves and a half-up brown style, with rose-toned makeup and an artificial red rose under a light clear cover. The Beast wears a royal-blue tailcoat, white ruffled shirt, black trousers, gold vest and polished boots, with a brown mane wig, small ears and blended brown makeup that suggests fur but keeps your expression visible. I'd skip the mask entirely. Repeat gold trim on both of you, and choose fabrics with some give, since a stiff gown is tiring after an hour.
16. Cinderella And Prince Charming Couple Costume

Cinderella and Prince Charming live in soft blue, white and silver. Cinderella wears a pale-blue gown with a fitted bodice, sheer sleeves and an ankle-length skirt, plus silver flats, a black ribbon choker, pale gloves, a silver headband and a high curled blonde bun, with luminous makeup and a clear acrylic slipper. The prince wears a white military-style jacket with gold trim, blue trousers, a red sash and polished black boots. I'd cut the epaulettes from foam and the medals from felt and lightweight trim; real metal pieces pull a jacket out of shape. Ankle length is the right hem for dancing, and shared gold trim keeps you matched.
17. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider mix purple, leather-look layers and flowers. Rapunzel wears a lavender corset-style dress with puff sleeves, a long blonde braided wig with tiny artificial flowers pushed through it, and purple flats, with fresh pink makeup and a foam frying pan or a plush chameleon. Flynn wears a cream shirt under a teal vest, brown trousers, a wide belt and tall brown boots, with a loose side part, a little makeup stubble and a satchel. Long braided wigs are heavy at the nape, so I pin the braid to the back of the dress at the waist and the pull disappears. Stretch trousers and repeated brown and purple accessories finish the pair.
18. Woody And Bo Peep Couple Costume

Woody and Bo Peep give you a cowboy beside a shepherdess. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, cow-print vest, blue jeans, red neckerchief, brown cowboy hat, belt and brown boots, with a toy sheriff badge. Bo Peep wears a pale-blue jumpsuit or full skirt with a pink waist sash, white boots, a pink bonnet and a curled blonde ponytail, with rosy makeup and a foam shepherd's crook. I build the crook from a pool noodle over a thin dowel so it's light and bends instead of jabbing anyone. Repeating the blue of Woody's jeans in her outfit links you, and the very different outlines keep each role clear.
19. Buzz Lightyear And Jessie Couple Costume

Buzz Lightyear and Jessie team a space suit with a bright cowgirl look. Buzz wears a white utility jumpsuit with green and purple fabric panels, white sneakers or boots, purple gloves and a fitted purple hood, with clean makeup and a small foam control panel. Jessie wears a white western shirt with yellow panels, jeans, cow-print chaps, a red hat, a red braided wig, brown boots, freckles and warm rosy makeup, plus a soft pull-string ring stitched to her back. I sew Buzz's panels from felt or neoprene-style fabric and keep the chest flat, because a big padded chest makes car seats and doorways awkward. Repeated white, green, yellow and red link the two toys.
20. Lilo And Stitch Couple Costume

Lilo and Stitch are a comfortable, colourful pair with no restrictive mask. Lilo wears a red dress printed with large white leaves, flat sandals and loose dark hair, with natural makeup, a flower clip and a small camera or plush doll. Stitch wears a blue hoodie with a pale belly panel, matching joggers, blue sneakers, soft ears and a light tail, with blue accents around the eyes and nose only. If you can't find the leaf print, white fabric paint and a cut-sponge leaf stamp will do it in an afternoon. I'd sew the ears to the hood so they move with it. Use cotton, not fleece, for an indoor party, and a shared flower garland links you.
21. Kim Possible And Ron Stoppable Couple Costume

Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable come almost entirely from everyday clothes. Kim wears an olive cropped top or fitted tee, black cargo pants, a utility belt, black gloves and sturdy ankle boots, with a long red wig, neutral makeup and a toy communicator. Ron wears a black long-sleeve top, loose gray cargo pants, canvas sneakers and a short blonde wig, with a small plush naked mole-rat poking out of a pocket. I'd stitch a small loop inside that pocket so the plush stays put when he sits. Keep the gear playful rather than tactical. Matching belts and black accents unite you, and olive versus gray keeps you distinct.
22. Ash And Pikachu Couple Costume

Ash and Pikachu turn sporty clothes into a trainer-and-companion pair. Ash wears a blue vest over a white tee, cuffed jeans, green fingerless gloves, red sneakers and a red-and-white cap, with short dark hair tucked under it and a foam red-and-white ball. Pikachu wears a yellow hoodie dress or sweatshirt with matching leggings, yellow sneakers, pointed ears and a lightning-shaped tail, plus red cheek circles, a small black nose and brown stripes across the back. I'd cut the tail from two layers of felt with a strip of fusible interfacing between them so the zigzag stands up. Skip the full mask, and those shared red accents connect you with no effort.
23. Sailor Moon And Tuxedo Mask Couple Costume

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask are polished and dramatic. Sailor Moon wears a white fitted top with a blue sailor collar, blue pleated skirt, red bow, white gloves and red knee-high boots, with a blonde wig in two high buns and long tails, gold forehead details, bright makeup and a moon wand. Tuxedo Mask wears a black tuxedo, white shirt and vest, black shoes, a red-lined cape, top hat and a slim white eye mask, and carries a single rose. The bun wig is the build that takes time, so I'd buy one with pre-made buns rather than styling a long wig yourself. Keep his cape at ankle length.
24. Naruto And Hinata Couple Costume

Naruto and Hinata are comfy ninja layers, good for a cold night. Naruto wears an orange-and-black zip jacket, matching pants, black open-toe costume boots over socks and a spiky blonde wig, with whisker lines, a fabric forehead band and a cardboard scroll. Hinata wears a lavender hooded jacket, navy pants, soft black boots and a long dark-blue wig with straight bangs, with pale lavender eyes and a small fabric pouch. Spiky wigs flatten in a hat box, so I store them on a foam head and re-spike them with a strong hold spray. Matching forehead bands link you, and stretch fabrics let you move.
25. Ghostbusters Couple Costume

Ghostbusters lets you match without choosing who plays whom. You both wear tan utility jumpsuits, black belts, elbow pads, black gloves and lace-up boots, with name patches, felt shoulder logos and practical hair, plus a little smudged gray makeup. I build the packs from painted cardboard boxes, flexible tubing and foam knobs, strapped on with old backpack straps, and I keep them empty so they're light. Nothing should look like a real weapon. One of you carries a plush green ghost and the other a handheld scanner, and colour-coded patches or laces add a bit of individuality.
26. Men In Black Couple Costume

Men in Black is black suits, white shirts and attitude. Both partners need black jackets, matching trousers, crisp white shirts, slim black ties, black socks and polished shoes, plus dark sunglasses and a small foam or cardboard flash device. Keep hair controlled and makeup matte, and clip an ID badge to the inside of each jacket. For a joke, one of you can carry a tiny plush alien in a black pet carrier. The suits must fit, so I'd pin or take in a borrowed jacket at the side seams; a baggy black suit reads as a funeral rather than an agent. Most of it comes straight from a closet.
27. Jurassic Park Explorer Couple Costume

Jurassic Park explorers are all earthy layers and practical boots. One of you wears a chambray shirt tied at the waist, khaki shorts, hiking boots and loose waves; the other wears a blue button-down, tan trousers, a brown belt and sturdy shoes. Both get visitor badges, light makeup and utility watches, with a plush dinosaur, paper map or toy binoculars to make the theme clear. I'd keep the distressing light, since heavily torn clothes look sloppy at a restaurant. Small red-and-yellow park-style patches on a backpack, with no branded text, do a lot, and the layers are comfortable outdoors.
28. Top Gun Pilot Couple Costume

Top Gun pilots are a sporty, matching pair. You both wear olive-green flight suits with patches, white undershirts, black belts and black or brown lace-up boots, with aviators, simple ID tags and neat hair under optional soft caps. Natural makeup with a little contour is plenty. One of you can carry a flight folder and the other a foam helmet. Make the patches fictional and skip real insignia. Roll the sleeves twice above the wrist so the suits look relaxed, and add call-sign labels; I print them on iron-on fabric sheets and then stitch the edges so they don't lift.
29. Sandy And Danny Grease Couple Costume

Sandy and Danny's black outfits are flattering and easy to find. Sandy wears high-waisted black pants, an off-the-shoulder black top, a wide belt, red heels or red flats and a curled blonde wig, with winged liner, red lips and gold hoops. Danny wears a fitted black tee, black jeans, a leather-look jacket, black loafers and a glossy pompadour, with a comb in his pocket. The off-the-shoulder top slides down all night unless it has elastic or you add a strip of silicone gripper inside the neckline, which I'd do. Her pastel cardigan and full skirt are the softer version, and red accents keep the photos lively.
30. Gatsby And Daisy Couple Costume

Gatsby and Daisy bring 1920s polish with fringe and tailoring. Daisy wears a beaded or fringed knee-length dress in champagne, silver or pale gold, low metallic heels, a softly waved bob, a jewelled headband and long pearl-style necklaces, with smoky eyes. Gatsby wears a cream or black three-piece suit, white shirt, bow tie, two-tone shoes and side-parted hair, with a pocket square and a vintage-style watch. Fringe tangles when it's packed folded, so I roll the dress loosely in tissue for the trip. Carry a small art deco clutch and a faux invitation, not a cocktail glass, and repeat champagne and gold on both of you.
31. 1970s Disco Couple Costume

A disco couple doesn't need characters, just shine. One of you wears a metallic wrap jumpsuit, platform shoes, big hoops and big curls; the other wears a wide-collar satin shirt, high-waisted flares, tinted glasses and platform boots. Both get blue or purple eye makeup, glossy lips and a few face gems. A mirrored-ball purse or a cardboard record is the prop. Metallic knits snag on jewellery and Velcro, so I keep rings simple. Choose stretch fabric and moderate platforms if you'll dance, and coordinate through silver, purple and electric blue instead of wearing identical pieces.
32. 1980s Aerobics Couple Costume

An aerobics duo is funny and incredibly easy to wear. Start with bright leggings or bike shorts, colourful leotards or tank tops, leg warmers, white sneakers and wide sweatbands, then split the colours: hot pink and turquoise for one, purple and lime for the other. Hair goes into high side ponytails or teased curls, and the makeup is vivid blush, blue shadow and gloss. I'd wear opaque shorts under any leotard for coverage and an easier bathroom trip. Carry water bottles or foam dumbbells, and match your wristbands and sneakers so the clashing neon still looks like one team.
33. 1990s Denim Couple Costume

A 1990s denim couple is casual and mostly thrifted. One of you wears denim overalls over a striped tee, chunky white sneakers, a bucket hat and a mini backpack; the other wears high-waisted jeans, a tucked graphic tee, an oversized denim jacket and lace-up boots. Butterfly clips, a scrunchie, curtain bangs or a centre part, and matte makeup with a brown lip set the decade. A cassette player and wired headphones are the prop. Pick two clearly different washes, light and dark, or the two of you merge into one blue blur. Matching colourful socks or sunglasses are an easy shared detail.
34. Glam Vampire Couple Costume

Glam vampires can be dramatic with no blood at all. One partner wears a floor-length burgundy velvet dress, sheer black cape, lace gloves, pointed ankle boots and long dark waves; the other wears a black tailored suit, burgundy vest, high-collared cape and polished boots. Both get pale luminous makeup, smoky eyes, sharp brows and a deep berry lip, with small fangs and jewelled collar pins. A tall cape collar flops unless it's interfaced, so I fuse a heavy interfacing to it or slip in a strip of plastic boning. Carry an antique-style mirror or a fabric rose, and stop the capes above the floor.
35. Skeleton Couple Costume

Matching skeletons are cheap, comfy and endlessly adjustable. You both wear black long-sleeve tops and black pants with white felt or fabric-paint bones, black sneakers or boots, white gloves and cropped jackets if it's cold. Paint cheekbones, eye sockets and simple teeth in clean black and white. One of you can add silver glitter, the other white geometric shapes. I trace the bones onto freezer paper, iron it on as a stencil and dab fabric paint through it, which gives sharp edges in one evening. A black bouquet or a foam lantern makes a good prop, and reflective details help outdoors.
36. Ghost Bride And Groom Couple Costume

A ghost bride and groom stay spooky without anything graphic. She wears a vintage-style white or pale-gray dress, a sheer veil, low white boots and loose curls dusted with washable silver, with pale makeup, smoky gray eyes and a fabric bouquet. He wears a gray suit, white shirt, silver tie, dress shoes and tousled hair with temporary gray spray, with matching cool-toned makeup and lightly powdered clothes. Keep hems short enough to walk safely, and avoid shredded strips that snag on chairs. Silver brooches or matching ribbons make the outfits look coordinated, not just colourless.
37. Witch And Black Cat Couple Costume

A witch and her black cat are the classic Halloween duo. The witch wears a long black wrap dress, purple velvet cape, striped tights, buckled ankle boots and a wide-brim pointed hat, with dark waves, purple eye makeup and a small broom. The cat wears a fitted black jumpsuit, or a black top and trousers, soft paw gloves, black sneakers, ears and a tail, with a black nose, fine whiskers and a little silver on the lids. A tail sewn into the back seam of the jumpsuit survives the night far better than one pinned on. Match the cat's collar or bow tie to the witch's purple cape, and keep the broom compact.
38. Frankenstein And Bride Couple Costume

Frankenstein's monster and the Bride rely on structure: tall hair, square shoulders and stylised green and white. He wears a black jacket, dark tee, loose trousers, heavy boots and a flat-topped black wig, with muted green makeup, strong brows and simple drawn stitches. She wears a long white dress or white jumpsuit under a flowing robe, white boots and a tall black wig with white streaks, with pale skin, smoky eyes and dark lips. I'd add shoulder pads to his jacket; it's a small sewing job and it makes the monster's outline in an instant. Foam neck bolts in silver, light wigs and breathable makeup finish it.
39. Mummy Couple Costume

A mummy couple is safest made from fabric strips, not toilet paper or trailing bandages. You both wear beige long-sleeve shirts, matching joggers or leggings and neutral sneakers or boots, then wrap torn cotton strips across the clothing, leaving knees, elbows, hands and faces free. Cream and taupe around the eyes and lightly tousled or gray-sprayed hair finish the look. I tear old cotton sheets into strips, tea-dye half of them, and stitch or fabric-glue every end, because loose ends always unravel and trail by the end of the night. One of you in sandy brown, the other ivory, and a scarab pin or foam amulet each.
40. Scarecrow And Crow Couple Costume

The scarecrow and crow are full of autumn texture. The scarecrow wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt with patched knees, brown boots and a floppy straw hat, with braids or tousled hair, rosy cheeks, a painted triangle nose and short stitches at the mouth, plus a few fabric sunflowers. The crow wears a black layered top, black trousers or a feather-trimmed skirt, opaque tights and black ankle boots, with a feathered shoulder cape, sleek dark hair, silver-black eye makeup and a small beak headband instead of a mask. I use feather trim sewn on in rows rather than loose feathers, since loose ones shed everywhere indoors. A sunflower pin on the crow ties you together.
41. Bee And Beekeeper Couple Costume

A bee and her beekeeper are cute and easy to read. The bee wears a striped top, black tulle skirt or trousers, opaque tights, yellow sneakers, sheer wings and an antenna headband, with yellow eye makeup, rosy cheeks and a honey-pot bag. The beekeeper wears white coveralls, light boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh around the brim, kept clear of the face. A plush bee or cardboard honeycomb is the prop. I'd sew the wings onto a pair of elastic shoulder loops so they sit flat and come off for dinner. Match the beekeeper's socks or belt to the bee's yellow, and everything here washes.
42. Astronaut And Alien Couple Costume

An astronaut and alien share silver, white and neon green. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, silver belt, white boots and mission patches, with tied-back hair, metallic eye makeup and a bubble-style helmet carried under one arm. The alien wears a metallic green jumpsuit or dress, matching leggings, silver platform sneakers, an antenna headband and a sleek green or silver wig, with luminous green shadow, face gems and pointed ears. A small glowing foam planet works as a shared prop. Metallic spandex shows every pin hole, so I fit it with clips rather than pins before sewing. Keep both faces uncovered and repeat silver between you.
43. Sun And Moon Couple Costume

The sun and moon can go glamorous or very simple. The sun wears a gold jumpsuit or flowing dress, metallic shoes, a radiant headpiece and warm gold makeup across the eyes and cheeks, with curls or a high braided ponytail and a small star-shaped bag. The moon wears silver or navy with a sheer cape, silver boots, a crescent headband, cool blue-gray makeup and tiny star clips in the hair. I make the sun's rays from gold glitter foam glued to a sturdy headband, then trim them until they're narrower than the shoulders. Matching shimmer, celestial earrings and a few face gems tie the two of you together.
44. Plug And Socket Couple Costume

A plug and socket is a quick visual joke on plain black clothes. You both wear black shirts, black pants and black sneakers. One of you wears a rectangular foam plug panel on the front with two short, bendy prongs; the other wears a matching socket panel with clearly painted holes. Keep the shapes soft, flat and rounded, and use simple silver eye makeup. Yellow belts or lightning-bolt clips add colour. I mount the panels on wide elastic shoulder straps and check that both of you can sit down in them before the night. Stand side by side so the plug lines up with the socket.
45. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couple Costume

Peanut butter and jelly in this version lives in two headbands, not big sandwich boards. The peanut butter partner wears a tan sweatshirt, brown trousers, neutral sneakers and a headband topped with a felt bread slice; the jelly partner wears a purple top, berry skirt or pants, purple sneakers and the same bread headband. Keep makeup rosy and hair neat. Each of you can carry a rounded foam spreading knife or a plush sandwich half. I'd stiffen the felt slices with a layer of craft foam glued inside, otherwise they flop forward. Big fabric labels with generic words help, and matching cream socks stand in for the bread.
46. Ketchup And Mustard Couple Costume

Ketchup and mustard don't need bulky bottle suits. Ketchup wears a red jumpsuit or sweats, red sneakers and a small red cone hat; mustard does the same in bright yellow. Add white fabric panels with simple generic labels down the front and green collar accents to suggest caps. Pull hair back under the hats and match your eye makeup to your colour. A cardboard basket of felt fries is the shared prop. I'd attach the white panels with snaps so the sweats go back into normal use afterwards. White gloves make the colours look cleaner, and you can sit and walk easily in all of it.
47. Chef And Spaghetti Couple Costume

A chef and a plate of spaghetti is a fun craft project. The chef wears a white double-breasted jacket, black-and-white check pants, white sneakers, a tall chef hat and a red neckerchief, with hair tucked away. The spaghetti partner wears a red shirt and trousers covered in beige yarn noodles and soft red felt meatballs, with beige shoes, a red headband and a foam bowl-shaped collar. I couch the yarn down with a zigzag stitch every few inches; glued yarn pulls loose and loops catch on everything. Keep the ends short. A big cardboard spoon is the prop, and red on both outfits makes the joke click.
48. Gardener And Flower Couple Costume

A gardener and a flower are bright, upbeat and very wearable. The gardener wears denim overalls over a green plaid shirt, gardening gloves, brown boots and a floppy sun hat, with an empty watering can or a basket of fabric flowers. The flower wears a green jumpsuit or dress, green tights and green flats, with a petal collar or headpiece in pink, yellow or purple, matching floral eye makeup, a smooth bun and leaf wrist cuffs. I cut petals from double-layered felt with a wire edge so they hold their curve all night. Real soil and plants stay home, and the flower's colour on the gardener's bandana connects you.
49. Moth And Lamp Couple Costume

The moth and lamp is my favourite odd couple here. The moth wears a beige sweater, brown trousers or a textured skirt, brown boots, feathered antennae and light patterned wings, with softly blended brown eye makeup and tousled hair. The lamp wears a gold or cream column-shaped outfit over leggings, comfortable shoes and a lampshade headpiece that leaves the whole face visible, plus a gold belt and gloves. Only use battery fairy lights that stay cool, and tape the battery pack inside the shade. I'd build the shade from a cut-down paper lampshade, which weighs almost nothing. The moth carries nothing, so the wings stay visible.
50. Deer And Headlights Couple Costume

Deer in the headlights is a pun that gets better after dark. The deer wears brown leggings, a tan sweater, brown ankle boots, soft ears and light antlers, with a white chest panel, spotted face makeup, a black nose and two small buns. The headlights partner wears a gray sweatshirt and pants dressed up as the front of a car, with two battery-powered white lights fixed to a foam chest panel, gray sneakers, silver makeup and a small steering-wheel prop. Use cool LEDs, never hot bulbs, and angle them down so you don't dazzle people. I'd make the antlers from foam clay over wire, which is far lighter than plastic. Reflective wristbands finish it.
Dinner, Drinks and a Costume That Behaves
A date night is harder on a costume than a house party. You'll sit in a booth, hang a coat, use a small restroom and eat in it, so I check each outfit against those moments before settling on it.
- Sit in it. Big panels, stiff gowns and long tails need to work on a chair or bench, or they need to come off.
- Plan the restroom. Jumpsuits and leotards are the trouble here; a back zip you can't reach alone is worse.
- Eat in it. Lipstick, fangs and face paint should survive a meal, so set makeup with powder and choose removable fangs.
- Carry a coat that doesn't flatten wings, crowns or capes. A long cardigan or an open coat works better than a fitted jacket.
- Leave the big props in the car after photos. A restaurant table has no room for a crook or a cardboard spoon.
The costumes that pass every one of those tests are usually the simplest: Sandy and Danny, Men in Black, the 1990s denim pair, Velma and Shaggy. They're the ones I'd pick when the plan is a table for two rather than a costume party.
Gatsby and Daisy for a Dressed-Up Date
A couple costume works when the theme is clear and both of you can wear it comfortably for the whole date. There are characters, monsters, decades, puns and easy DIY builds above, so there's something for most budgets and skill levels. Before you settle on one, think about the weather, where you're going, your shoes and whether you can both sit down. Light props, bendy headpieces and breathable makeup beat oversized accessories. If I were dressing up for a dinner date, I'd go with Gatsby and Daisy. Whatever you choose, repeat two or three colours across both outfits and the pair will look planned.
