Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are one of the easiest animated pairs to read at a party, because the two palettes do the work for you. Her pale blue and navy police uniform with tall gray ears stands right next to his green shirt, striped tie and orange fox tail, and nobody has to guess who is who. Below are 35 ways to dress the pair: movie-accurate uniforms, Disneybound outfits, no-sew builds, weather-proof versions and options for friends, siblings and families. I've written each one with the clothes, ears, tail, makeup and shoes, so you're never leaning on a headband alone. Go detailed for a big costume event, or strip it back for school, the office or a Halloween party.

Rabbit Ears That Stay Upright Past Midnight
Judy's ears are the piece most people get wrong. They're long and tall, and they want to flop backward as soon as the fabric warms up against your head. When I make a pair, I cut each ear from two layers of felt or fleece with a strip of craft foam or a length of millinery wire sandwiched between them, running from the tip right down into the headband. Wire lets you bend them into her slight curve; foam keeps them light.
- Fix each ear base to the headband at two points, not one, so it can't pivot.
- Use a headband with small teeth on the inside, or wrap a plain one in fabric so it grips hair.
- Keep the backs gray and the insides a soft pink. That two-tone is what makes them Judy rather than any rabbit.
- Store them flat in a box afterward, never on a hook, or they set with a bend.
Nick's fox ears are shorter, so stiff felt alone usually holds them. His tail is the trickier piece, because a big faux-fur tail is heavier than it looks. Hang it from a separate belt or a loop sewn to a strap worn under the shirt. A single safety pin through the pants tends to tear out by the end of the night.
1. Classic Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Start with the film versions and you can't go wrong. Judy is a pale blue long-sleeve shirt, a navy tactical vest, fitted navy pants and a black utility belt, plus gray bunny ears, a small white tail, black wrist cuffs, gray knee patches and practical ankle boots. Soft gray makeup on the cheeks and nose finishes her face. Nick is a light green short-sleeve button-down, a navy-and-red striped tie, khaki pants and brown shoes, with orange fox ears, a bushy tail, brushed-back hair and a little orange-and-white face makeup. Give Judy a carrot-shaped recorder and Nick a cardboard jumbo pop. When I style this pair, the knee patches and wrist cuffs are what I fuss over most, because they separate a real Judy from someone who just happens to be wearing a blue shirt.
2. Judy Hopps And Officer Nick Wilde Costume

Putting both of them in police blue is the sharper, more matched option. Judy keeps her light blue shirt, cropped navy vest, navy pants, utility belt, rabbit ears and gray knee panels. Nick swaps his green shirt for a matching blue police shirt, a navy vest, tailored navy trousers and a belt with fabric pouches. Cut both badges from gold craft foam in one sitting so they match in size and shine. Judy's hair sits in a low ponytail under tall ears, and Nick's gets swept up between pointed fox ears. One warning: once Nick loses the green, his ears and tail carry the whole character, so don't skimp on them. Light animal makeup, black sneakers or combat-style boots and a small notebook each are all the rest needs.
3. Meter Maid Judy And Classic Nick Wilde Costume

Meter maid Judy is my favorite way to break up two blue uniforms, because the bright orange vest gives her a silhouette of her own. Start with a light blue shirt, navy pants and an orange reflective-style vest, then add a navy bowler hat with the bunny ears attached, a gold foam badge, a utility belt, gray knee patches and black ankle boots. Her makeup stays soft: gray nose, pink cheeks, defined lashes. Nick wears his green patterned shirt, striped tie, khaki pants, fox ears, orange tail and brown loafers, sleeves rolled a little to show off his slouch. Push the ears through slits in the hat rather than gluing them on top, or they tip backward the first time she turns her head. A cardboard parking ticket book for her and a red felt frozen treat for him round it out.
4. Easy DIY Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

You don't need a sewing machine for this one. Judy is a pale blue collared shirt, navy leggings, a dark blue cropped vest and black sneakers. Cut knee patches from gray felt and stick them on with removable fabric tape, then add a store-bought bunny-ear headband, a cotton tail and a gold foam badge. Nick wears a green camp shirt, tan chinos, a striped necktie and brown casual shoes. Glue orange and black felt fox ears onto a plain headband and hang a faux-fur tail from a belt loop. Gray and orange eye shadow handle the animal makeup, and a painted cardboard carrot and a felt frozen treat cost next to nothing. Buy stiff felt for the ears; the soft craft kind droops within an hour.
5. Last-Minute Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Halloween snuck up on you? Raid the closet. Judy needs a blue button-down, navy jeans or leggings, black sneakers and any dark vest, with a printed badge pinned on and gray paper bunny ears added to a basic headband. A white pom-pom clipped to the waistband is her tail. Nick needs a green shirt, khaki pants, a striped tie and brown shoes, with fox ears and a tail cut from orange poster board or felt and the tips blacked in with marker. Judy gets a pink nose and whisker dots; Nick gets orange eye shadow and a dark nose. Poster board creases the moment someone hugs you, so if you have ten spare minutes, cut the ears from felt instead.
6. No-Sew Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Everything in this version comes off afterward without a mark on the clothes. Judy layers a navy zip-front vest over a light blue athletic shirt and dark blue leggings, with gray felt knee shapes held on by fashion tape, a clip-on cotton tail, a bunny-ear headband, a foam badge and a black utility belt. Gray sneakers and soft lavender-gray eye makeup finish her. Nick wears a green printed shirt, tan pants, a striped tie and brown slip-ons. Hot glue his felt fox ears to the headband instead of stitching, and fix a purchased tail to the waistband with a large safety pin hidden under the shirt. Brushed-back hair and warm orange makeup do the rest. Fashion tape holds well on cotton but lets go on stretchy athletic fabric, so test one patch on the leggings before you head out.
7. Thrifted Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Thrift stores are kind to this pair. Look for Judy's pale blue uniform-style shirt, navy utility vest, dark fitted pants and black boots in the workwear and activewear racks, then add gray felt knee patches, a secondhand belt with small pouches, tall bunny ears and a homemade badge. Nick is usually the easier find: a loose green patterned shirt, tan trousers, a narrow striped tie and worn brown loafers, plus orange fox ears, a faux-fur tail and a little face makeup. Taking up a sleeve or a pant hem makes cheap clothes look chosen on purpose. I'd hunt for Nick's shirt first, because the right washed-out green is the one piece you can't fake. A thrifted notebook for Judy and a felt frozen treat for Nick give the pair personality without a packaged costume in sight.
8. Casual Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

This is the version for people who want to feel like themselves. Judy wears a pale blue fitted T-shirt, a navy denim jacket, dark blue joggers and gray high-tops, with a simple bunny-ear headband, a white clip-on tail, a gold badge pin and a carrot-shaped crossbody bag. A sporty ponytail and light gray nose makeup suit her. Nick gets a sage green polo, tan joggers, a striped tie and brown sneakers. Without the uniform, his pointed ears and orange tail are what turn the outfit into a costume, so pick a tail long enough to be seen from the front. Brush his hair back and add rust shadow near the temples. It's light enough for a long party or a day at a theme park.
9. Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Disneybound Costume

Disneybounding means hinting at the characters with color and a few small accessories instead of the full uniform. Judy tucks a light blue blouse into navy high-waisted pants under a fitted navy vest, with gray loafers, a structured belt bag, small rabbit-ear clips and a carrot pendant. Lavender shadow and a tiny pink nose are enough makeup. Nick pairs a sage green button-down with camel trousers, a slim striped tie and polished brown loafers. Fox-ear clips and an orange belt or scarf point to his coloring without turning him into an animal, and a rust jacket helps if it's cool. My test: stand side by side in a mirror and see whether the blue and the green still tell the story without the ears. If they do, you've nailed it.
10. Glam Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

For a dressier party, keep the palette and upgrade the fabrics. Judy wears a fitted light blue jumpsuit under a cropped navy corset-style vest, with a metallic belt, gray knee-high boots, sparkling bunny ears and a rhinestone badge. A sleek high ponytail and silver-lavender eye makeup with a small pink nose suit the shine. Nick goes for a silky green shirt, tailored tan trousers, a striped satin tie and polished brown boots, plus velvet fox ears, a brushed faux-fur tail, warm copper eye makeup and a fitted rust blazer. Silky shirts show every sweat mark, so I'd put a thin cotton undershirt under his. Props stay small: a glittered carrot clutch for her and a glossy red felt frozen treat for him.
11. Minimalist Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

If you hate bulky costumes, this is your pair. Judy wears a powder blue mock-neck top, navy tailored pants, a narrow black belt and gray ankle boots, with small gray bunny ears, a white pom-pom tail and one gold badge pin. A tidy ponytail and just a pink nose with two whisker dots keep her face clean. Nick wears a solid sage shirt, slim khaki trousers, a striped tie and brown loafers, with compact fox ears and a light orange tail rather than oversized ones. Copper shadow and brushed-back hair finish him. With so few pieces, each one has to be right. I'd put the effort into matching the blue and green tones, since a pale mint shirt next to powder blue can blur the two characters together.
12. Plus-Size Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Comfort comes first here, with layers that move and accessories that adjust. Judy starts with a breathable light blue tunic, navy stretch pants and a soft utility vest that closes without pulling across the bust. Wear the belt at the natural waist or the hips, whichever feels better, and add gray sneakers, tall bunny ears, a cotton tail and a foam badge. Nick wears a relaxed green camp shirt over tan stretch chinos, with a loosely knotted striped tie, supportive brown sneakers and fox ears. Hang his tail from its own belt instead of the pants, so the weight doesn't drag the waistband down all night. Soft gray and orange makeup tie in the animals. Neither outfit needs a tight garment or a packaged set that only comes in a few sizes.
13. Gender-Swapped Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Anyone can play either character. A masculine Judy might be a light blue uniform shirt, a structured navy vest, straight-leg navy cargo pants, black boots, rabbit ears and a utility belt, with short brushed hair, gray cheek shading and a carrot recorder. A feminine Nick could be a fitted green blouse, high-waisted tan trousers, a striped neck scarf and brown ankle boots, with pointed fox ears, a long orange tail, copper eye makeup and soft waves. Flip those silhouettes however suits you. What has to stay is Judy's blue police palette with rabbit details and Nick's green-and-tan clothes with fox accessories. In my experience the fit matters more than which side of the store the pieces came from: a vest that fits makes Judy read as a cop on anybody.
14. Best Friend Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Judy and Nick are partners, not a couple, which makes them easy for two friends. The Judy friend wears a pale blue shirt, navy vest, dark blue pants, gray sneakers, bunny ears and a white tail, with a fabric badge and a carrot-shaped phone case or recorder. The Nick friend wears a leafy green shirt, tan pants, a striped tie, brown sneakers, fox ears and an orange tail. Simple gray and copper face makeup ties them to the animals, and matching blue, green and orange friendship bracelets add something personal. Check that both headbands grip before a festival or campus event, because a loose one ends up in your hand by the second hour. For photos, Judy does the serious police pose and Nick does the side-eye.
15. Kids Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

For kids, I go soft and stretchy first and worry about accuracy second. Judy can be a light blue cotton shirt, a navy pull-on vest, stretchy navy pants and gray sneakers with secure closures, plus a flexible bunny-ear headband, a soft pom-pom tail, a fabric badge and a lightweight belt with no hard buckles. Nick wears a green cotton polo, tan joggers, a loosely attached striped tie and brown sneakers, with padded fox ears and a plush tail fixed firmly to the waistband. Keep face paint to a small nose and a little cheek color. Hand-held props get dropped and lost, so sew or pin flat felt ones to the belt instead. It's an easy pair for siblings or friends at a school parade.
16. Toddler Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Toddlers need costumes an adult can fix in ten seconds. Dress Judy in a pale blue sweatshirt, navy leggings, a light navy vest and gray nonslip sneakers, with a fluffy white tail on a fabric loop and a soft headband with short padded ears. A big felt badge says who she is without small pieces to swallow. Nick wears a green sweatshirt or polo, tan pull-on pants and brown sneakers. Put his fox ears on a comfortable hood instead of a headband, because most toddlers yank a headband off within minutes, and keep his plush tail short enough not to drag. Skip the face paint if they fight it. A tiny pink or dark nose is plenty.
17. Warm-Weather Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

In the heat, cut the layers and keep the colors. Judy wears a sleeveless pale blue collared top, navy athletic shorts, a light cropped vest and gray running shoes, with a slim belt, foam badge, airy bunny ears and a small clip-on tail. Pull her hair into a high ponytail and use sweat-resistant gray and pink makeup sparingly. Nick goes for a loose green short-sleeve shirt, tan walking shorts, a narrow striped tie and brown canvas sneakers, with light felt fox ears and a thin fabric tail. Swap props for water bottles wrapped in each character's colors. Faux fur is the first thing I'd drop on a hot day; a big tail traps heat against the lower back like a scarf.
18. Cold-Weather Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

For an outdoor night, build the characters over warm basics. Judy wears a pale blue thermal top under a navy puffer vest, fleece-lined dark blue leggings and gray weather-resistant boots, with a blue knit hat that has the bunny ears attached, a warm utility belt, gray gloves and a white tail. Cold air will give her pink cheeks for free. Nick layers a green flannel over a thermal undershirt, then a rust jacket, tan corduroys and insulated brown boots, with a fox-ear beanie and a thick orange tail. Wrap a striped scarf where the tie would be. If you're putting ears on a beanie, stitch them; hot glue goes brittle in the cold and the ears snap off.
19. Rainy-Day Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Rain doesn't have to cancel the pair. Judy wears a light blue rain jacket under a navy waterproof vest, dark blue rain pants and gray rubber boots, with a laminated foam badge, weather-resistant bunny ears and a synthetic white tail that dries fast. A clear belt bag keeps her carrot recorder dry. Nick wears a green water-resistant overshirt, tan rain pants and brown waterproof boots, plus a striped clip-on tie, coated felt fox ears and a short faux-fur tail treated with fabric spray. Makeup pencils hold up better than cream paint in drizzle. Clear umbrellas edged in blue and orange tape keep both characters visible in photos. Leave cotton pom-pom tails at home, since they soak up water and hang like a wet sock.
20. School-Friendly Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

School costume days tend to rule out anything that hides a face, trips a classmate or catches on a chair, so this version stays simple. Judy wears a pale blue polo, a navy sweater vest, straight-leg navy pants and gray sneakers, with a small badge patch, a short bunny-ear headband and a white pom-pom tail fixed firmly to a belt. A tiny pink nose is enough. Nick wears a green polo, tan chinos, a striped clip-on tie and brown sneakers, with soft fox ears and a short tail that won't get sat on. Character-colored notebooks replace props. Judy's ponytail and Nick's brushed-back hair help if the student wants a little more. Read the school's own rules first, because some ban face paint and tails outright.
21. Work-Friendly Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

At the office, aim for an outfit you could sit through a meeting in. Judy wears a powder blue button-down, a navy tailored vest, navy ankle pants and gray loafers, with small bunny-ear hair clips, a gold badge brooch, a black belt and a white tail she can unclip before sitting down. Lavender shadow and a faint pink nose keep the makeup office-friendly. Nick wears a sage green dress shirt, tan trousers, a striped tie and polished brown shoes, with fox-ear clips, a rust pocket square and a removable orange tail. Ordinary folders labeled as case notes make a quiet joke. I like this one because both people can take off the animal bits for a client call and still look dressed for work.
22. Theme-Park Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

A full day on your feet changes the priorities. Judy wears a pale blue moisture-wicking shirt, a navy skort or athletic pants and a light blue vest, with cushioned gray sneakers, a secure bunny-ear headband, a mini badge pin and a carrot crossbody bag. Nick wears a green camp shirt, tan shorts or travel pants, a striped neck scarf and supportive brown sneakers, with comfortable ears and a short tail that won't catch on ride seats. Keep makeup to colored shadow and small noses so it sits well over sunscreen, and make both bags hands-free. Wear the headband for a full evening at home first; the pressure behind the ears only shows up after a few hours.
23. Athletic Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Activewear in the right colors makes a sporty pair for a fun run or field day. Judy wears a pale blue performance top, a navy running vest, dark blue leggings with gray knee panels and gray trainers, plus a stretchy belt bag, light bunny ears, a white tail and a fabric badge. A high ponytail and a small pink nose keep her bouncy. Nick wears a green athletic polo, tan track pants, a striped sweatband or narrow tie and brown-and-white sneakers, with flexible fox ears, a short tail and rust eye makeup. Foam water bottles or rolled case files are safe to carry. Running shakes everything loose, so I'd pin the tail in two places and choose a headband with teeth.
24. Pajama Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

For a pajama party or movie night, both characters translate into sleepwear. Judy wears a pale blue long-sleeve pajama top, navy lounge pants, a soft navy sleep vest and gray slippers, with a plush bunny-ear headband, a fluffy tail, a fabric badge and a carrot-shaped pillow. A loose ponytail, a small pink nose and rosy cheeks suit her. Nick wears a green pajama shirt, tan lounge pants and brown slippers, with a striped sleep mask hung around his neck in place of his tie, plush fox ears, a padded tail, lightly brushed-back hair and copper cheek shading. Long lounge pants and slippers are a trip hazard on stairs, so pick cuffed hems.
25. Streetwear Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Oversized layers and clean sneakers turn the pair into a city version. Judy wears a powder blue hoodie under a cropped navy utility vest, dark blue cargo pants and gray high-tops, with a black belt bag, a gold badge patch, tall bunny ears, a white tail, lavender-gray eye makeup and a high braided ponytail. Nick pairs an oversized sage bowling shirt with tan cargo pants, a loosely knotted striped tie and brown sneakers, then adds an orange bomber, pointed fox ears, a long tail and copper shadow. A carrot phone bag for her and a red frozen-treat keychain for him replace big props. Hoods and tall ears fight each other, so leave Judy's hood down and set the ears just forward of it.
26. Formal Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

For a costume gala, the tailoring does the talking. Judy wears a powder blue pantsuit with a navy waistcoat, a metallic belt and gray pointed flats, plus a jeweled badge brooch, satin bunny ears, a white tail, polished lavender eye makeup and a sleek low ponytail. Nick wears a sage green dress shirt under a rust or camel suit, with a navy-and-red striped tie and brown dress shoes, velvet fox ears, a groomed orange tail and warm copper makeup. Judy carries a carrot-orange clutch, and Nick tucks in a red pocket square as a nod to his frozen-treat hustle. Satin ears slide on smooth hair, so I cross a couple of bobby pins behind each one.
27. Vintage Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Retro shapes make a fan version that feels lifted from an old detective story. Judy tucks a light blue collared blouse into high-waisted navy trousers under a cropped navy vest, with gray lace-ups, a narrow utility belt, vintage-style bunny-ear clips, a gold badge brooch, soft rolled hair and a pink nose. Nick pairs a sage camp-collar shirt with pleated tan trousers, suspenders, a striped tie and brown wingtips, plus pointed fox ears, an orange tail and neatly waved hair. She carries a small case-file bag; he holds a red felt frozen treat. Muted fabrics help the mood, but keep enough blue in Judy and enough green in Nick, or the faded tones swallow the characters.
28. 1990s Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

The 1990s version is all big layers and chunky shoes. Judy wears a powder blue fitted tee under an oversized navy denim vest, dark blue mom jeans and chunky gray sneakers, with a black belt bag, tall bunny ears, a white tail, a badge patch and a high ponytail in a blue scrunchie. Nick wears an oversized green patterned shirt over a rust T-shirt, loose tan pants, a striped tie and brown skate-style sneakers, plus fox ears, an orange tail and brushed-back hair. Small sunglasses are fun outside. A carrot mini backpack and a red felt frozen treat keep the character clues in, and the loose shapes make it one of the easiest versions to dance in.
29. Cute Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Soft textures and round shapes make the sweetest version. Judy wears a pale blue sweater, a navy pleated skirt over matching tights and gray ankle boots, with fluffy ears, a big white pom-pom tail, a heart badge and a carrot mini bag. Soft pigtails, pink cheeks and a tiny nose finish her. Nick wears a fuzzy sage cardigan over a green shirt, tan trousers, a loosely tied striped bow and brown sneakers, with plush ears, an oversized fluffy tail and warm orange cheeks. A red felt frozen treat is his prop. Matching paw-print pins on both outfits show you planned it together. Fuzzy cardigans shed onto everything nearby, so run a lint roller over both of you before photos.
30. Realistic Cosplay Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

This is the detailed build for big costume events and careful photos. Judy needs a fitted pale blue uniform top, a structured navy tactical vest, paneled navy pants, gray knee guards, wrist cuffs, a utility belt and matte black boots, plus well-proportioned rabbit ears, a white tail, lavender-gray makeup and a crafted carrot recorder. Nick needs a subtly printed green camp shirt, an accurately striped tie, tailored khaki trousers and brown shoes, with sculpted fox ears, a layered faux-fur tail with a darker tip, slicked-back hair and blended orange, cream and brown makeup. Keep every prop light and harmless. I'd put the hours into fit: a vest that sits flat and pants hemmed to the boot will do more than oversized ears ever will.
31. Face-Paint Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Here the makeup carries the character and the clothes stay plain. Judy wears a light blue shirt, navy vest, dark pants, black belt and gray boots, with tall ears, a white tail, a badge and a carrot prop. Blend soft gray around her forehead and cheeks, add white near the mouth, define a pink nose and dot in fine whiskers. Nick wears a green shirt, striped tie, tan pants and brown shoes with fox ears and an orange tail; use rust around his temples and cheekbones, cream around the mouth and dark brown on the nose tip. Keep it stylized rather than a full mask. Patch-test any paint on the inside of the wrist the day before, and press setting powder over each layer so it doesn't crease by midnight.
32. Matching Hoodie Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Matching hoodies make the pair look coordinated with almost no effort. Judy wears a powder blue hoodie under a navy utility vest, dark blue joggers and gray sneakers, with soft bunny ears attached to the hood, a white tail at the waistband, a fabric badge, a slim belt bag, a pink nose and a carrot accessory. Nick wears a sage green hoodie, tan joggers and brown sneakers, with a striped scarf standing in for his tie, pointed fox ears on the hood, a dark-tipped orange tail and copper makeup. A rust vest adds a layer if it's cold. Sew the ears to the hood rather than gluing them, because glue peels off fleece the first time the hood goes up and down.
33. Maternity Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Judy's colors adapt easily to a bump, with nothing pressing on the waist. Wear a pale blue maternity tunic, an open navy utility vest, stretchy dark blue leggings and supportive gray sneakers. Sit a soft belt above the bump only if it's comfortable, or skip it and pin the badge straight to the vest. Add bunny ears, a white tail, soft gray makeup and a carrot crossbody bag. Nick wears a relaxed green shirt, tan stretch pants, a striped tie, brown sneakers, fox ears and an orange tail. Leave heavy props behind. A small felt badge reading 'junior officer' on Judy's bag is a sweet nod to the baby on the way.
34. Reversible Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

This pair changes halfway through the night. Judy starts in a pale blue tee, navy pants and gray sneakers, then adds a detachable navy vest, utility belt, badge, ears, tail and carrot recorder to become the officer. Nick begins in his green patterned shirt, striped tie, khaki pants, ears, tail and brown shoes, and later adds a navy police vest, a fabric badge and a dark utility belt to become Officer Nick. Removable clips and hook-and-loop tabs make the switch quick, and the gray rabbit and orange fox makeup suit both versions. Sew the soft side of the hook-and-loop onto the clothes, so the scratchy side never rubs skin or snags a sweater.
35. Sequel-Inspired Judy Hopps And Nick Wilde Costume

Field jackets give the partnership a fresh detective-team update. Judy layers a pale blue uniform shirt under a fitted navy field jacket, with dark cargo pants, gray boots, a utility belt, rabbit ears, a white tail, a badge, a carrot recorder, a compact crossbody case and determined lavender-gray makeup. Nick wears his green shirt and striped tie under a rust field jacket, with tan cargo pants, brown boots, fox ears and a bushy tail, plus a fabric badge and notebook to show him as Judy's investigating partner. A light sanding at the cuffs and pocket edges makes the jackets look like they've worked real cases. The outerwear is new, but the blue and green underneath keep both characters clear.
What Makes Two People Read as Judy and Nick
From across a room, nobody sees your badge or your carrot pen. They see two blocks of color and two pairs of ears. That's why I start styling this pair by checking contrast: Judy needs a clear pale blue against navy, and Nick needs a shirt that's plainly green, not gray or olive, next to tan. If the two shirts drift toward the same muted tone, the ears end up doing all the work.
If You Only Get a Few Pieces Right
- Judy: the blue shirt under a navy vest, tall gray ears, and a white tail at the back.
- Nick: the green short-sleeve shirt, the striped tie, and an orange tail with a darker tip.
- Both: shoes you can stand in for hours. Nobody else remembers your boots, but you will.
Gray Noses and Orange Cheeks Without a Stained Collar
Both characters need only a little makeup, which is good news, because a light blue collar shows every smudge. Do the face before you dress, then press translucent setting powder over the paint with a puff. Cream paint stays tacky on a warm night and transfers the moment a chin touches fabric; powder dries the surface down. For Judy, a soft gray eye shadow brushed over the cheeks and a pink lip pencil on the tip of the nose is plenty. For Nick, a rust or copper shadow along the cheekbones and a dark brown pencil on the nose does the job, and both come off with ordinary makeup remover.
Test anything new on the inside of your wrist the day before, especially on kids. And if one of you wears glasses, skip paint across the bridge of the nose, since the frames rub it off within the hour anyway.
Blue for Judy, Green for Nick, Then Build From There
Every version above rests on the same few pieces: Judy's blue palette, gray ears, white tail, badge and carrot, and Nick's green shirt, tan pants, striped tie, fox ears and orange tail. Get those right and you can dress the pair up for a costume event or down for a school day, using closet basics, thrift finds or felt cut at the kitchen table. Spend on shoes you can walk in, keep the props light, and the two of you will last the whole night ready for the next case.
