Parisian spring style comes down to a handful of pieces that get worn over and over: a trench, a striped knit, straight jeans, ballet flats and a good bag. This spring adds a few new notes, like capri pants coming back, cropped trenches and flats with a bit of decoration. I plan spring wardrobes around weather that changes by the hour and days spent walking. That's how I've looked at the 35 outfits below, so each one comes with what to watch for if you're actually wearing it on foot, at home or on a trip.

Dressing for Spring Weather That Changes by the Hour
Spring in Paris is mild and unpredictable. Early in the season, mornings can be cold enough for a sweater and a coat, and afternoons warm enough for bare arms. Showers come and go, often quickly. Later in spring the days warm up, but evenings still cool down fast. That's why almost every outfit below has a layer you can take off.
How I layer for a full day out
- A breathable base: a cotton tee, a shirt or a thin knit that looks finished on its own.
- A middle layer that folds small, like a fine merino sweater or a light cardigan.
- An outer layer that handles a shower: a trench is ideal because it's light and water-resistant.
- A silk scarf, which adds warmth at the neck in the morning and goes in the bag by noon.
Carry a bag big enough to hold the layer you take off. A tiny shoulder bag looks great in photos, but if the sweater has nowhere to go, you'll end up wearing it all afternoon or carrying it in your hand.
1. Trench Coat With Straight-Leg Jeans and Ballet Flats

A beige trench over a white tee and light-wash straight jeans, with black or nude ballet flats and a leather crossbody. It's the outfit I'd have on for the flight. The trench is the useful part: it's light enough to carry, keeps off a shower, and makes jeans look dressed. Check that it fits over a sweater, because spring mornings often need one under it and afternoons don't.
2. Striped Breton Top With White Wide-Leg Jeans and Sandals

A navy and cream Breton knit with crisp white wide-leg jeans, flat brown leather sandals and a woven basket bag. Comfortable sandals matter here, since this outfit is made for long walks along the Seine. Keep a light cardigan to throw over the shoulders when the wind picks up by the river. Wide white jeans pick up dirt at the hem on wet pavements, so I'd roll them once on rainy days.
3. Cropped Trench Jacket With Wide-Leg Jeans and Loafers

A cropped trench that stops at the waist is this year's update, and it suits wide-leg jeans better than the long version, which can swamp them. A fitted white tee or bodysuit underneath, black leather loafers, an oversized black shoulder bag and slim cat-eye sunglasses. The cropped length leaves your hips exposed to rain, so it's a fair-weather jacket; on a wet day the long trench wins.
4. Navy Cardigan With Light-Wash Jeans and Cap-Toe Slingbacks

A fitted navy cardigan buttoned up and tucked into light-wash straight jeans looks tidy with almost no effort. The shoes carry the outfit: two-tone cap-toe slingbacks, black toe and beige body, with a low heel you can walk in. A quilted black shoulder bag and fine gold jewelry. Slingbacks can slip on the heel during long walks, so test them on stairs before you rely on them over cobbles.
5. Graphic Tee With Oversized Blazer and Kick-Flare Jeans

Parisian style has a rougher side too: a vintage-style graphic tee tucked into dark kick-flare jeans, under an oversized black or charcoal blazer. Pointed black ankle boots or heeled loafers, a red lip and a woven basket bag. Kick-flares should end just above the ankle bone, so the flare shows; full-length flares cover the shoe and the shape disappears.
6. White Button-Down Shirt With Straight-Leg Jeans and Leopard Flats

A crisp white button-down, sleeves rolled and collar open, worn untucked to the hip over classic blue straight jeans. Leopard ballet flats add the only pattern, with oval sunglasses and a leather tote. Untucked shirts need the right length: past mid-hip and they start to look like nightshirts over straight jeans. If yours is longer, a quick front tuck fixes it.
7. Gray Sweater With Trench Coat, Light-Wash Jeans, and Cap-Toe Flats

For cold mornings, a light gray crewneck under a beige trench, with light-wash straight jeans, black cap-toe flats, a compact crossbody and cat-eye sunglasses. This is the layered version of outfit one, and the one I'd pack for an early spring trip. By afternoon the sweater can come off and go in the bag; a thin merino folds small and doesn't crease.
8. White Blouse With Trench Coat, Jeans, and Ballet Flats

An airy white cotton or silk-blend blouse with puff sleeves or embroidery under a structured trench, with straight blue jeans and nude ballet flats. A gold pendant and a woven crossbody. Puff sleeves crush under a fitted trench, so check the coat's armholes, or wear the trench open. Good for a museum and lunch at a bistro.
9. Button-Down Shirt With White Jeans and Brown Loafers

White jeans with a relaxed blue or chambray button-down half-tucked, brown leather loafers, a matching belt and a canvas tote. Matching belt and loafers is an old rule, but it still makes an outfit look planned. White jeans travel badly in one way: a single coffee spill ends the day for them. I'd pack them for a short trip only if there's a way to wash them.
10. Striped Shirt With Jeans and Cap-Toe Ballet Flats

A good navy and cream striped long-sleeve shirt with cropped straight jeans and black cap-toe ballet flats is the most repeatable outfit on this list. Quality shows most in a striped top: thick cotton keeps the stripes straight and the neck flat after many washes, while thin jersey twists at the side seams. A leather shoulder bag and a little gold jewelry, nothing more.
11. Black Turtleneck With Polka-Dot Midi Skirt and Mary Janes

A flowing polka-dot midi skirt in black and cream with a fitted black turtleneck. Patent Mary Jane flats keep it vintage without tipping into costume, and a small black top-handle bag and gold hoops finish it. Medium dots are the easiest to wear; very large dots look playful and very small ones read as a solid from a distance. A good date-night outfit.
12. White Cardigan With Cream Midi Skirt and Cap-Toe Flats

A lightweight white cardigan, open or loosely buttoned, with a silky cream midi skirt that moves as you walk. Black cap-toe flats and a structured black bag stop the cream from looking washed out, and a fine gold chain is enough jewelry. Satin cream skirts show water spots, so I'd keep this one for dry days and indoor plans.
13. Striped Button-Down With White Jeans and Brown Loafers

A blue and white striped button-down worn open over a white tank, with white straight jeans, brown loafers and a matching belt. A navy sweater knotted over the shoulders is the finishing touch, and it's practical too: it's there when the evening cools. Knot it loosely at the front; a tight knot pulls the shoulders forward.
14. Floral Midi Dress With Tie-Front Cardigan and Woven Bag

A pink or lavender floral midi with a square neckline and a light cream cardigan tied at the front. Flat white sandals and a woven rattan bag. Square necklines need a bra with straps set wide, or they show at the corners. On a trip, a midi dress like this is the most useful single piece you can pack, since it dresses up with heels and down with sandals.
15. Black Cropped Jacket With Straight-Leg Jeans and White Heels

A black cropped jacket with white trim or a little embellishment, over a white top and straight jeans, with white pointed heels and a sleek black shoulder bag. The white top ties in with the shoes, so the trim looks planned. White heels scuff fast on stone streets; a clear protective spray before the first wear helps a lot.
16. Cable-Knit Cardigan With Pleated Trousers and Woven Flats

A chunky cream cable-knit cardigan with tailored pleated trousers in the same cream family, woven leather flats, a canvas tote and soft gold jewelry. The cable knit and the smooth trousers give a single-color outfit some texture. A chunky cardigan is bulky to pack, so I'd wear it on travel days rather than put it in the case.
17. Black Blazer With Tailored Trousers and White Blouse

An oversized black blazer over a crisp white blouse with tailored black trousers and black cap-toe flats. The white collar and cuffs breaking out of the black give it shape. A structured black bag and silver jewelry. Roll or push the blazer sleeves slightly so the blouse cuff shows; it lightens the whole outfit.
18. White Shirt With White Jeans and Striped Sweater Over Shoulders

An all-white base, white shirt and white straight jeans, with a navy striped sweater over the shoulders, beige loafers, a canvas tote and big sunglasses. Two whites rarely match, so either choose one warm and one cool on purpose or buy both in the same fabric. The navy stripe keeps the outfit from looking like a uniform.
19. White Shirt With Cream Trousers and Silk Scarf

A white button-down and cream tailored trousers with a printed silk scarf at the neck or on the bag handle. Black cap-toe flats and a structured black tote. The scarf is the only color and pattern, so choose one with a shade that echoes the trousers. On a trip, a silk scarf is also an extra layer that takes almost no room in a bag.
20. Polka-Dot Blouse With Black Capri Pants and Pointed Heels

Capris are back this spring. Here a polka-dot blouse with a bow or ruffle sits over fitted black capri pants, with black pointed heels and a compact shoulder bag. Capris cut the leg at mid-calf, which can shorten it, and the pointed heel is what offsets that. On shorter legs, I'd choose a capri that ends just below the calf's widest point rather than on it.
21. Black Knit Top With White Mini Skirt and Pointed Flats

A black knit top tucked into a crisp white mini skirt with pointed black flats, a black shoulder bag and silver jewelry. Black, white, black from top to toe. A white mini is easy to wear only if it's opaque, so check it against daylight. It's an evening outfit for warm days, so carry a light layer for later.
22. Navy Blazer With Denim Shorts and Low-Profile Sneakers

A navy blazer over a white tee and tailored denim shorts, with low white sneakers, a canvas tote and a simple necklace. The blazer stops the shorts reading as beachwear. Tailored shorts should end mid-thigh or a bit lower and have a clean hem, not frayed. This is the outfit for the first truly warm day of the trip.
23. Striped Polo Knit With Straight-Leg Jeans and Suede Boots

A striped polo-collar knit tucked into straight blue jeans, with suede Western-style ankle boots, black sunglasses and a leather shoulder bag. It's the kind of polished casual look you see in Paris Fashion Week street style. Suede and spring rain don't mix: treat the boots with a protector spray before the trip and brush them once they dry.
24. White Jeans With Leather Jacket and Pointed Heels

A chocolate leather jacket over a white tank and white jeans. The light base keeps it spring, and the brown leather gives depth. Black pointed heels and a canvas mini crossbody. I'd swap the heels for flats on a walking day; leather jackets are warm enough that you'll want to carry it by afternoon, and a crossbody keeps your hands free to do that.
25. Linen Button-Front Dress With Wedge Espadrilles and Tote

A knee-length or midi linen button-front dress in white, beige or sage, with brown wedge espadrilles, a large leather tote or market basket, gold hoops and a red lip. Linen dresses go see-through in bright sun, especially white, so a slip is worth packing. Espadrilles get soggy in rain, so check the forecast before choosing them.
26. Suede Blazer With Blue Jeans and Pointed-Toe Flats

A tan or caramel suede blazer over a white tee and blue straight jeans, with matching pointed ballet flats, a structured bag and a slim belt. Suede reads warmer and softer than a wool blazer. It also marks easily, darkens in rain and can rub color onto a white tee when new, so wear it over something darker until it's settled.
27. Denim Jacket With Midi Skirt and Ballet Flats

A denim jacket over a flowing neutral or small-floral midi skirt, with black or tan ballet flats and a leather crossbody. The jacket's length matters: it should end at the waist, where the skirt starts, so the two don't fight. Longer denim jackets cut the skirt in half. This is my picnic and Sunday market outfit.
28. Wide-Leg Trousers With Denim Jacket and Sneakers

Cream or light beige wide-leg tailored trousers with a slightly cropped denim jacket over a white tee, low white sneakers, a structured shoulder bag and little jewelry. Pale wide trousers sweep the ground in sneakers unless they're hemmed for flat shoes, so if you'll wear these with both heels and sneakers, hem them for the sneakers.
29. Pleated Mini Skirt With Oversized White Shirt and Loafers

A pleated black mini skirt with an oversized white button-down, black loafers with white socks, and a black shoulder bag. Structured below and loose above. The shirt has to be tucked at least at the front, or it covers the skirt and you lose the shape. It's a young-feeling outfit that still looks tidy.
30. Cream Cable-Knit Sweater With Flared Jeans and Cap-Toe Flats

A cream cable-knit sweater over light-wash flared jeans for a 70s shape, with black cap-toe flats, a quilted black shoulder bag and slim cat-eye sunglasses. Flared jeans with flats need to be hemmed for flats, or they drag. The sweater is warm enough for an early spring morning without a coat on a dry day.
31. Capri Pants With Ballet Flats and Polka-Dot Blouse

Black or navy capris to mid-calf with classic ballet flats, a cream and black polka-dot blouse, a structured top-handle bag and fine gold accessories. Flats with capris show the most ankle and the most leg, so they look longer than you'd expect. This version is dressier than the one with heels and works for a gallery evening or dinner.
32. White Shirt With Pleated Trousers and Woven Loafers

Beige or camel pleated trousers with a white button-down tucked in, woven leather loafers, a tan belt matching the trousers and a canvas tote. Pleated trousers add room at the hip, which is comfortable on a long day, but the pleats should lie flat when you stand. If they open, the trousers are too tight across the hip.
33. Striped Tee With Linen Shorts and Ballet Flats

A long-sleeve striped tee with tailored linen shorts and black ballet flats, a straw market bag and a fine gold anklet. Covered arms and bare legs work on those days that are warm in the sun and cool in the shade. Linen shorts crease at the lap within an hour; a linen-cotton blend creases a little less.
34. Monochrome Cream Ensemble With Tailored Vest and Wide-Leg Trousers

A tailored sleeveless vest over a white tee with matching cream wide-leg trousers, nude pointed flats, a structured brown leather bag and layered gold necklaces. The brown bag keeps all that cream from looking flat. Matching sets have to be bought together, because creams vary a lot between batches and two near-matches look wrong side by side.
35. Leather Midi Skirt With Striped Knit and Mary Jane Flats

A black leather midi skirt is usually a fall piece, but with a navy and cream striped knit tucked in it works for spring too. Patent Mary Jane flats, a black shoulder bag and fine silver jewelry. The soft knit and smooth leather are the contrast. Leather skirts sit warm in the sun, so this is one for cool spring days rather than warm ones.
Ballet Flats on Cobblestones: What Holds Up
Ballet flats appear in most of these outfits, and they're the shoe I'd pack. They're also the shoe that causes the most blisters on trips, because most people walk far more on holiday than they do at home. A few things make the difference.
- Wear them in first. A week of short walks at home softens the leather and shows you where they rub before it matters.
- Look for a rubber sole, or have one added by a cobbler. Thin leather soles are slippery on wet stone and wear through quickly.
- Check the arch. Totally flat shoes tire the feet over long distances; a thin cushioned insole helps without changing the look.
- Pack two pairs and alternate days, so each pair can dry out and the rub points change.
When to skip the flats
On a rainy day, suede flats and canvas espadrilles both soak through fast. Low leather ankle boots or clean white leather sneakers are better choices, and they work with most of the jeans outfits above. Keep the flats for dry days, and you'll get the whole trip out of them.
Pack the Trench, Break In the Flats
A Parisian spring wardrobe is short: a trench, striped knits, good jeans, ballet flats and a blazer, plus one or two of this year's pieces like a cropped trench or capris. Plan for showers and long walking days, and pick shoes you've already broken in. If you're packing for an actual trip, most of these outfits share the same ten or so items, so you can pack light and still wear something different every day.
