Shopping at size 22 has improved a lot, but plenty of what's sold still fits badly at the shoulder, the bust or the back rise. The outfits I build for clients this size rely on silhouettes that celebrate your curves rather than tents meant to cover them. Below are 35 complete outfits for work, weekends, holidays and evenings out, from tailored blazers and wide-leg trousers to maxi dresses and chunky knits. With each one I've noted what I check on a real body, because fit is what makes or breaks plus-size clothes.

Four Places I Check Fit on a Size 22 Body
Size labels vary wildly between brands, so a 22 in one shop can be a 20 or a 24 in another. Instead of trusting the number, I check four fit points on every piece. If these four are right, the outfit looks good almost regardless of style.
- Shoulders: the shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder. Too wide and the whole top looks oversized; too narrow and it pulls across the back. Shoulders are hard to alter, so this is the one I won't compromise on.
- Bust: buttons shouldn't gape and wrap fronts shouldn't open. If the bust fits but the waist is loose, a tailor can take in the waist easily.
- Back rise: sit down in trousers and jeans. If the back waistband dips, the seat is cut too short for you.
- Upper arm: raise your arms and reach forward. Sleeves that bind at the bicep will be uncomfortable all day.
When a piece passes the shoulders and bust but needs a hem, a waist take-in or a sleeve shortened, I buy it and send it to a tailor. When the shoulders fail, I put it back.
1. Wide-Leg Trousers and Fitted Bodysuit

Wide-leg trousers are the trouser shape I reach for most at size 22, because they fall straight from the hip and don't cling to the thigh. A high-rise black pair with a snug square-neck bodysuit in mocha or cream gives a clean tucked line with no shirt tails bunching at the waist. I always check the back rise; if the waistband dips at the back when you sit, the trousers are cut too short in the seat. Pointed block heels lengthen the line, and a structured tote, small gold hoops and a pendant take it from the office to drinks.
2. Floral Wrap Dress and Wedge Sandals

A wrap dress adjusts to your bust and waist in a way a zipped dress can't, which is why I like it at this size. The V flatters a full bust, and a midi skirt skims the hips. My one check is the wrap overlap: if it's shallow, it will gape when you sit, so look for a deep overlap or add a hidden snap. Choose three-quarter sleeves and a soft blue, pink or lavender floral. Cork wedges and a straw bag suit a garden party or brunch, with round sunglasses and a gold bracelet.
3. Camel Blazer, White Tee, and Straight-Leg Jeans

A camel blazer makes jeans and a tee look intentional. I size blazers to the shoulders and bust first; a slightly oversized single-button cut gives you room to move without straining at the button. Wear it over a crisp white crewneck with the front tucked into stretchy dark-wash straight-leg jeans. Roll the hems once to show the ankle, then add white leather sneakers, a cognac crossbody and tortoiseshell sunglasses. It suits a casual client meeting or a Saturday market morning.
4. Black Midi Sweater Dress and Knee-High Boots

A ribbed black midi sweater dress is my cold-weather answer for clients who want a dress without tights fuss. Look for a side slit so you can walk freely and a rib dense enough to smooth rather than cling. Black suede knee-high boots with a low block heel make one long dark line from hip to toe; wide-calf boots matter here, since a shaft that's too tight wrinkles and pinches. A long pendant and a slouchy black hobo finish it. Add a tailored wool coat on very cold days.
5. Linen Button-Down Shirt and Pull-On Wide-Leg Pants

Linen is the coolest fabric I can put a client in for summer. A relaxed white or sky-blue linen button-down with rolled sleeves sits over pull-on wide-leg pants in sand, khaki or light olive with an elastic waist. Check the button gap at the bust; if it opens between buttons, size up or wear it open over a tank. Flat leather slides, a canvas tote, a woven belt, a few thin gold rings and tortoiseshell hoops suit outdoor lunches and vacation days.
6. Oversized Chunky Cardigan, Tank Top, and Jeggings

Volume on top only works with a fitted base, and that's what this outfit gets right. An oversized chunky cardigan in oatmeal or charcoal goes over a racerback tank tucked into high-waisted dark jeggings. Wear the cardigan open; buttoned, a thick knit adds a lot of width. Slip-on sherpa-lined clogs or fuzzy slides keep it cozy for working from home or a coffee run. A messy bun and small studs suit lazy Sundays and weekend errands.
7. Emerald Green Velvet Jumpsuit and Gold Heels

Emerald velvet makes an evening outfit on its own, and a wrap-bodice jumpsuit with a wide leg is one of the easiest ways to wear it. The wrap lets you set the coverage and marks the waist. Velvet does add a little visual weight and crushes where you sit, so I'd steam it before you go out. Gold strappy block heels and a gold clutch, chandelier earrings and a berry lip finish it for a holiday party or a birthday dinner. It's far more comfortable than a gown.
8. White Eyelet Midi Dress and Tan Accessories

White eyelet is breathable and textured, which keeps a white dress from looking flat. I'd choose a square neck, short puff sleeves and a tiered skirt that moves as you walk. A wide tan leather belt marks the waist, and matching flat sandals ground it. Eyelet needs a slip or a lined skirt; the holes let light through more than most people expect. A straw circle bag and layered gold necklaces finish it for summer date nights and showers.
9. Plaid Blazer, Black Turtleneck, and Trousers

Smart-casual layering at size 22 works best with a smooth base, so I start with a fitted black turtleneck. Add tailored straight-leg black trousers with stretch, then a plaid blazer in burgundy, navy and forest green. A plaid with small to medium checks is easier to tailor and wear than a big tartan. Pointed black leather ankle boots and an oxblood satchel finish it for office days and presentations.
10. Denim Jacket, Striped Tee, and Khaki Cargo Pants

A medium-wash denim jacket with some stretch is the casual layer I'd buy first, since rigid denim can bind across the back of the arms. Wear it open over a Breton striped long-sleeve tee tucked loosely into olive cargo pants with an elastic waist and a relaxed straight leg. Cargo pockets on the thigh add bulk, so I prefer flat, low-profile ones. White canvas platform sneakers, a canvas backpack and silver hoops work for school pickup, picnics and travel days.
11. Satin Midi Skirt and Cashmere Sweater

Bias-cut satin is less risky at size 22 than people think, as long as it has some weight. A burnt orange or champagne satin midi skirt moves with you; pair it with a tucked cashmere crewneck in cream, taupe or warm beige. The knit's matte surface softens the shine. Watch the waistband, which on many satin skirts is a thin elastic that rolls; a wider band or a side zip sits flatter. Nude pointed pumps, a pearl-trimmed clutch and pearl drops suit an anniversary dinner.
12. Utility Jumpsuit and Canvas Sneakers

Utility jumpsuits in khaki or olive with a zip front, rolled sleeves and a drawstring waist are practical and casual. The relaxed hip and leg give room, and the drawstring keeps the shape from going boxy. Torso length is the fit issue I check first: plus-size women with a longer body often find jumpsuits pull at the crotch, so I sit and bend in one before buying. White canvas sneakers, a baseball cap and a black belt bag worn crossbody suit flea markets and park walks.
13. Belted Trench Coat, Cropped Wide-Leg Jeans, and Loafers

A beige trench with a removable belt gives instant waist definition and structure. Choose a size that closes over a sweater without pulling across the back, then belt it rather than buttoning. Underneath, a white crewneck tucked into raw-hem cropped wide-leg jeans in medium wash. Black penny loafers with gold hardware, a black leather shoulder bag and big gold hoops finish it. It's the outfit for spring and fall days that can't decide on a temperature.
14. Ruffle Hem Maxi Dress and Flat Sandals

A ruffle hem maxi dress in terracotta, mustard or coral is a dress that's simply fun to wear. The tiered ruffles move, and a smocked bodice stretches to fit without a zip. My advice is to keep the ruffles narrow; deep tiers add volume at the hem that can overwhelm. Flat leather slides make it walkable, and a woven crossbody, beaded bracelets and round sunglasses give it a boho finish for a beach trip or an outdoor concert.
15. Black Leather Jacket, Graphic Tee, and Distressed Jeans

A black leather moto jacket adds edge to anything, and the asymmetric zip front creates a diagonal line that's kind to a fuller middle. Size it so you can zip it, then wear it open. Under it, a vintage band tee tucked loosely into stretchy distressed straight-leg jeans. Black combat boots, a silver chain, stacked rings and a crossbody with silver hardware make it a concert-night outfit. Real leather softens with wear; faux leather won't, so buy faux a little roomier.
16. Puff Sleeve Blouse and High-Waist Trousers

A puff sleeve blouse in sapphire or deep fuchsia gives office clothes personality. The shoulder volume draws the eye up, and a V-neck keeps it from closing in. I'd keep the puff moderate if your upper arms or shoulders are broad, since big sleeves add width there. Tuck it into high-waisted black wide-leg trousers, then add black pointed pumps, a structured top-handle bag in a matching jewel tone and pearl studs for a presentation or a networking event.
17. Cozy Sherpa Jacket, Thermal Tee, and Leggings

Sherpa adds warmth without weight, and a cream or caramel zip-up is soft enough to layer easily. Under it, a fitted heathered grey thermal tucked into high-waisted fleece-lined black leggings with a wide waistband that stays put. Sherpa sheds and mats where bag straps rub, so I'd carry a crossbody on the opposite side from the zipper. Chunky lug-sole ankle boots, a knit beanie and a quilted crossbody suit outdoor walks and coffee dates.
18. Two-Piece Knit Coord Set and White Sneakers

Matching sets save time, and a knit coord set in dove grey, powder blue or blush feels soft and looks put together. The slightly cropped sweater should meet the high waist of the wide-leg knit pants; a gap breaks the line. Knit pants can bag at the knee after a long day, so I'd look for a firm, thick knit. White leather platform sneakers, a thin chain, small hoops, a bracelet and a cream shoulder bag make it right for travel days and casual brunches.
19. Fit-and-Flare Midi Dress and Heeled Sandals

Fit-and-flare dresses define the waist and skim the hips, which is why I recommend them so often at this size. A structured bodice with a full midi skirt in burgundy, navy or emerald works year-round. The bodice is the fit point: it needs to close comfortably at the bust, and the waist seam should sit at your actual waist, not below it. Nude strappy heeled sandals, a matching clutch, a cocktail ring and pearl drops suit a fall wedding or an evening at the theater.
20. Oversized Button-Down Shirt and Biker Shorts

This is my hot-weather outfit for clients who want coverage and air at the same time. An oversized crisp white cotton button-down worn open over a fitted black tank, with black cotton biker shorts at mid-thigh. The shorts stop thigh chafing on long walks, which is half their value. White crew socks, chunky black slides, a black cap, oval sunglasses and a canvas tote make it a summer market outfit.
21. Tweed Blazer, Silk Camisole, and Dark Jeans

Tweed with denim mixes structure and ease. A tweed blazer with a little metallic thread and frayed edges goes over a black silk camisole, with dark-wash skinny or straight-leg jeans. Tweed doesn't stretch, so I size by the bust and check I can reach forward without the back seam straining. Black suede pointed flats, a quilted chain-strap bag, pearl studs and a red lip finish it for a dinner date or a gallery opening.
22. Kaftan Dress and Embellished Sandals

A printed kaftan in a light fabric skims the body and lets air move, so it's my top pick for very hot vacations. A V-neck and side slits give it some shape and room to walk. Turquoise and gold, coral and pink, or a bold geometric print all suit resort settings. Embellished flat sandals, a beaded clutch, gold bangles and chandelier earrings carry it from a poolside lunch to dinner on the beach.
23. Chunky Turtleneck Sweater and Faux Leather Leggings

Chunky knit on top and slick faux leather below is a proportion contrast that works when the sweater is the only volume. An oversized turtleneck in cream, camel or charcoal over black faux leather leggings is the formula. I'd choose a sweater that ends at the high hip or covers the seat, depending on what you're comfortable with, and leggings with a thick waistband. Chunky-heeled black ankle boots, a long pendant and a black leather tote make it a cold-weather weekend uniform.
24. Striped Shirt Dress and Espadrille Wedges

A navy and white striped cotton shirt dress is breezy and easy. The collar and buttons look neat, and the relaxed body stays cool. Roll the sleeves below the elbow and open the top two buttons. A thin brown belt marks the waist; if the dress has no loops, I tie the belt slightly above the natural waist so it doesn't slide down. Jute espadrille wedges, a straw tote and gold hoops suit market runs and casual office days.
25. Burgundy Leather Blazer, Black Bodysuit, and Wide-Leg Pants

A burgundy faux leather blazer gives evening outfits structure. The oxblood shade works in any season, and the shoulders add polish. Under it, a black sleeveless bodysuit keeps the tuck smooth, and high-waisted black wide-leg trousers give a long line. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so in a warm room I'd take the blazer off for part of the night. Black pointed pumps, a burgundy clutch, gold earrings and stacked rings suit a dinner party.
26. Cropped Hoodie, High-Waist Joggers, and Chunky Sneakers

A cropped hoodie in heather grey or sage that stops at the natural waist, with matching high-waisted joggers, makes athleisure look planned. The tapered leg and cuffs keep the shape neat. I'd check that the cropped hem doesn't ride up above the jogger waistband when you lift your arms; a slightly longer crop is more comfortable at this size. White chunky sneakers, a black backpack and small silver hoops with a chain suit travel days and errands.
27. Tiered Maxi Dress and Denim Jacket

A denim jacket over a tiered maxi balances soft and structured. Choose a small floral with a smocked bodice and tiers that move. Wear the jacket open with sleeves pushed up; a cropped jacket marks the waist better than a longer one over a full skirt. White leather sneakers, a straw crossbody and layered gold necklaces make it a good outfit for spring afternoons and fall watch parties.
28. Ponte Pantsuit and Pointed-Toe Flats

Ponte is a double-knit fabric with enough body to hold a tailored shape and enough stretch to sit comfortably all day, which makes a ponte pantsuit a great workwear option at size 22. Choose navy or charcoal, a single-button blazer that nips in at the waist and straight-leg trousers that skim the hips. Ponte can pill on the inner thighs over time, so I'd pick a dense, smooth one. A blush or ivory silky cami, metallic or patent pointed flats, a leather tote and pearl studs finish it.
29. Boho Maxi Skirt and Off-Shoulder Top

A printed maxi skirt in rust, olive and cream paisley gives a relaxed bohemian feel, and a tiered cut moves well. A white off-shoulder smocked top shows the collarbone and shoulders. Check the off-shoulder elastic on your upper arms: too tight and it digs in, too loose and it slides. Flat tan sandals and a fringe crossbody lean into the boho aesthetic, with beaded bracelets, long pendants and round sunglasses for a summer festival or beach dinner.
30. Sequin Blazer, Black Cami, and Straight-Leg Jeans

A sequin blazer in champagne, rose gold or black brings the sparkle, so the rest stays plain: a black satin cami tucked into dark-wash straight-leg jeans. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so I'd check the lining covers the seams. Black strappy heeled sandals, a velvet clutch and crystal drops finish it for New Year's Eve or a birthday party when you'd rather not wear a formal dress.
31. Cardigan, Cami, and Linen-Blend Trousers

A longline open cardigan in oatmeal or mushroom draped over a matching silky cami forms two long vertical lines down the front of the body. Tuck the cami into high-waisted linen-blend wide-leg trousers with an elastic back waistband. Linen blends wrinkle less than pure linen, which is why I prefer them for a full workday. Tan slides, a woven leather tote, a thin chain bracelet, huggie hoops and a pendant suit a casual office or a weekend brunch.
32. Puffer Vest, Long-Sleeve Tee, and Cargo Pants

For outdoor adventures, a quilted black puffer vest keeps the core warm without restricting your arms. Wear it over a heathered grey thermal with olive cargo pants that have a relaxed straight leg and room to move. Sit-down room in the seat matters on a long car ride or a hike, so I'd size cargo pants for comfort over neatness. Lug-sole ankle boots, a knit beanie and a nylon crossbody suit fall hikes and apple picking.
33. Wrap Jumpsuit and Statement Earrings

A wrap jumpsuit in wine, teal or midnight blue is one piece with no coordinating needed. The wrap defines the waist, the V flatters the bust and the wide leg makes a long line. As with any wrap, I check that the overlap stays closed when you sit and lean forward. Metallic strappy block heels, a matching clutch, geometric earrings and a low bun suit cocktail parties and evening weddings.
34. Buffalo Plaid Shacket, White Tee, and Black Jeans

A buffalo plaid shacket, half shirt and half jacket, is the easiest fall layer there is. Wear the red and black check open over a white crewneck with stretchy black high-waisted skinny jeans. Size shackets to button comfortably even if you wear them open, because a too-small one pulls across the back. Block-heel black ankle boots, a black beanie and a crossbody with gold hardware make it right for bonfire nights and pumpkin patch visits.
35. Statement Coat, Turtleneck, and Tailored Trousers

A statement coat in cobalt wool, berry or a vibrant plaid becomes the outfit, so keep the rest plain. A black fine-gauge turtleneck tucked into tailored straight-leg black trousers gives a sleek base. For coats at this size, I check the armhole and back width while wearing a sweater; a coat sized only to your bare frame will pull once layered. Black leather gloves, a structured top-handle bag and pointed ankle boots make it a sharp winter outfit for meetings and evenings.
Thigh Chafe, Gaping Buttons and Rolling Waistbands
The complaints I hear most from plus-size clients aren't about style at all. They're about small daily annoyances that make a good outfit miserable by lunchtime. Most have simple fixes.
Under dresses and skirts
Thighs rubbing in summer is the reason many women give up on dresses. Lightweight anti-chafe shorts or slip shorts under a dress solve it completely, and an anti-chafe balm works for shorter outings. I keep a pair of slip shorts in every summer capsule I build.
Shirts and blouses
If buttons gape at the bust, small sew-in snaps between the buttons close the gap invisibly. A better long-term answer is to buy shirts sized to the bust and have the waist taken in.
Leggings and pull-on pants
Narrow elastic waistbands roll down under a softer stomach. A wide, high waistband or a yoga-style fold-over band stays put. When trying leggings, I sit, bend and walk a few steps before deciding, because rolling usually starts only once you move.
None of these fixes are glamorous, but they make the difference between an outfit you wear once and one you reach for every week.
Fit First, Then Color and Everything Else
Size 22 dressing works best when the clothes fit you rather than hide you. Get the shoulder, bust, back rise and waist right, and nearly every outfit above will look as it should. Start with the pieces closest to how you already dress, adapt the colors to what suits you, and use what's in your closet as the base.
