A Ranger suit looks simple, and that's exactly why sloppy details show. It's a bodysuit in one strong colour, a pattern across the chest, white or coloured gloves and boots, a belt with a Morpher buckle, and a helmet. Get the chest pattern wrong or let the boot covers sag and it stops reading as a Ranger. The team has gone well past the original red, blue, yellow, pink, black, green and white, so there's plenty of choice. I build most of these from a stretch jumpsuit or athletic separates, with the details in stretch vinyl, felt or foam, and I keep anything rigid small so you can still sit, dance and walk all evening. The list runs from the original team through the later series, then finishes with a couple and a family set.

Chest Diamonds That Stretch With the Suit
The white diamond band on the original suits is the detail people judge first, and it's also the thing that fails most often on homemade versions. Spandex stretches in every direction, and most decoration doesn't. Here's how I put it on so it survives an evening.
- Put the suit on and mark where the band should sit with chalk. Diamonds placed on a flat suit end up too low once it's stretched over a chest.
- Draw one diamond on card and use it as a template for every one, so the points line up across the front.
- Cut the diamonds from stretch heat-transfer vinyl or white stretch spandex. Regular vinyl and plain felt don't give, and they crack or pucker as soon as you move.
- For vinyl, press through a cloth with a cool iron and short presses. Spandex melts or goes shiny under a hot iron.
- For fabric diamonds, use a narrow zigzag around each edge with a ballpoint needle, stretching the suit slightly as you sew so the stitching gives too.
Fabric tape is fine for a one-night costume, but it lifts at the points. Round the tips very slightly and it holds much longer.
1. Classic Red Ranger Costume

Red is where I'd start anyone new to Ranger sewing, since the classic suit is the easiest to get right. Use a fitted red jumpsuit, or red leggings with a long-sleeve athletic top, and add the white diamond panels across the chest in stretch fabric, felt or removable fabric tape. White gloves, knee-high boot covers and a white belt balance all that red. Jason's helmet is red with a black visor and silver mouthplate. Wear the Morpher on the belt rather than carrying it, and slip white sneakers under the boot covers. Plain felt diamonds will ripple when you breathe in. If you use felt, back it with a lightweight stretch interfacing first.
2. Classic Blue Ranger Costume

Billy's suit is the same pattern as the red one in royal blue, which makes it a good one to sew alongside a friend's Red. A blue stretch jumpsuit or blue compression pants with a fitted top are the base. I cut the white diamonds from iron-on vinyl, pressed with a cloth and a cool iron, since spandex scorches quickly. Add white gloves, a belt and calf-high boot covers over cushioned sneakers. The helmet is a smooth blue shell, dark visor and silver mouth, and it can hang from your belt whenever you need to see properly. Short brown hair kept neat and a wrist communicator finish the unhelmeted Billy look.
3. Classic Yellow Ranger Costume

Yellow is the one colour I'd warn people about. Thin yellow spandex goes see-through under flash, so buy a lined suit or wear a smooth nude layer underneath, and check it in a photo before the day. Trini's version takes a yellow jumpsuit or leggings and top, white diamond panels on chest and shoulders, white gloves, a slim belt with a round Morpher buckle and white boot covers. The helmet is yellow with a glossy black visor. Unhelmeted, straight dark hair and a little yellow-gold shadow are enough. A wrist communicator is the only prop I'd bother with.
4. Classic Pink Ranger Costume

Kimberly's suit is the pink jumpsuit with white diamonds plus a short pink skirt, and the skirt is easy to sew: a rectangle of the same stretch fabric, gathered onto a wide elastic waistband. That way it sits over the suit rather than being stitched on, and you can take it off if it rides up. Add white gloves, a white belt, boot covers and supportive sneakers. Her helmet is pink with a black visor and silver mouth. Without the helmet, a high ponytail with soft bangs and rosy makeup does the job. Pick a rich, saturated pink. Pale pink spandex washes out to almost white in photos.
5. Classic Black Ranger Costume

Zack's Black Ranger lives or dies on the white contrast, so use matte fabric. Shiny black spandex bounces light back and swallows the white diamonds in photos. Start with a matte black bodysuit or athletic separates, then add white diamonds around the chest and shoulders, white gloves, a white belt and tall boot covers. The black helmet with a dark visor and silver mouth gives a strong monochrome look. Short dark hair, natural makeup, a wrist communicator and a round Morpher buckle cover the rest. White sneakers go under the boot covers.
6. Green Ranger Costume With Gold Shield

The gold shield is what makes Tommy's Green Ranger, and it's the one piece I'd make from foam rather than fabric. Cut it from thin EVA foam, cover it in metallic gold fabric or flexible paint, and leave plenty of room at the shoulders so you can still lift your arms. The suit underneath is emerald green with white diamond trim, white gloves and green-and-white boot covers. His helmet is green with a black visor and silver mouth. Add gold armbands, a white belt and a Morpher buckle, and tie the toy flute to the belt so you aren't holding it all night. Elastic straps under the arms keep the shield from riding up toward your chin.
7. White Ranger Costume With Gold Armor

A white suit shows every seam and every wobbly line of topstitching, so go slowly. For Tommy's White Ranger, start with a lined white stretch jumpsuit, then add black-and-gold chest armour shaped into a flexible shield that doesn't stop your arms moving. Gold armbands, a metallic belt, white gloves and white boots trimmed in gold carry the colour scheme down. The helmet is white with a black visor, gold forehead detail and silver mouth. Use a Morpher-style buckle at the waist and leave the extras off. White fabric also picks up dirt, so I'd sew the boot covers last and keep them in a bag until you're dressed.
8. Armored Red Ranger Movie Costume

The movie-style armour is a step up in work, so be honest about your time. Start with a red compression suit and layer flexible foam panels across chest, shoulders, forearms and shins. Paint them in two or three reds for depth and outline some edges in silver. The helmet is streamlined, with a dark visor and an angular silver mouth. Tuck hair under a moisture-wicking cap. Add red gloves, armoured boot covers, a silver belt and a Morpher at the hip. Foam traps heat, so I punch small vent holes where they won't show, behind the knees and under the arms, and wear flexible red sneakers.
9. Armored Pink Ranger Movie Costume

This is the armoured movie take on Pink, with no skirt. Wear a deep pink compression suit and attach flexible armour panels along the torso, hips, shoulders and legs, with silver paint around the edges. The pink helmet with a black visor keeps the look consistent. Unhelmeted, a practical dark ponytail and soft pink makeup suit it. Pink gloves, armoured forearm guards, a silver belt, pink-and-silver boot covers and a small light-up Morpher finish it. Keep the hip panels short and flexible. A rigid piece across the hips is the reason most armoured costumes make sitting down impossible.
10. Zeo Gold Ranger Costume

Gold and black is a striking combination, but metallic gold in quantity can look like a foil blanket if it's too shiny. Start with a fitted black jumpsuit and add a broad gold chest panel with black geometric lines, carrying the gold onto shoulders, forearms, belt and boot cuffs. The helmet is gold with a dark visor and black accents. Short dark hair suits Trey, or adapt it to Jason's turn as Gold Ranger. Black gloves and black boots calm the metallic sections down. Use stretch gold fabric or thin foam rather than hard plastic, so the armour bends with you.
11. Zeo Red Ranger Costume

Tommy's Red Zeo suit swaps the diamonds for angular white shoulder panels that form a V across the chest, which is easier to cut than it looks. I draft it on paper first, tape it to the suit, and adjust until both sides match. Use gold trim at the collar, wrists, belt and boot tops. The red helmet carries a star-shaped visor, silver mouthplate and fine gold outlining. Add white gloves and red boots over supportive sneakers, and a small wrist prop instead of anything handheld. Cut the white and gold panels from stretch fabric so the suit still moves for group poses.
12. Turbo Red Ranger Costume

Turbo Red has a racing feel: a red fitted suit with a white chest panel and silver and blue accents that echo a car badge. Keep the design symmetrical; one lopsided stripe on a suit this simple is the first thing anyone notices. The helmet is red with a dark visor and a silver grille-style mouth. Tommy or T.J. can inspire the unhelmeted look. White gloves, a silver belt, red boot covers and athletic shoes complete it, with a small key-shaped Morpher at the waist. Reflective silver fabric gives a bit of shine without the stiffness of armour.
13. In Space Silver Ranger Costume

Silver spandex creases and shows every pull, so I'd layer silver panels over a light gray compression suit rather than try to fit an all-silver jumpsuit. Zhane's Silver Ranger adds a black chest section trimmed in gold or bronze, with silver gloves, metallic boot covers and a black belt. His helmet is silver with a dark visor and angular black detail. Unhelmeted, short blond hair with volume does it. A light wrist Morpher and a small belt communicator are plenty. Hide black sneakers under the boot covers.
14. Lost Galaxy Red Ranger Costume

Leo's Lost Galaxy suit has a black chest panel with a white jagged design, which I'd paint or apply in stretch vinyl rather than sew. Fine points in appliqué fray and lift at the tips. The base is a fitted red jumpsuit, with white gloves cuffed in black, a silver belt and red boot covers with contrasting trim. The red helmet has a black visor and creature-style detailing around the face. Medium-length brown hair suits the unhelmeted look. Clip a small Quasar-style emblem to the belt and wear supportive red or black sneakers.
15. Lightspeed Rescue Pink Ranger Costume

Dana's Lightspeed suit is clean and easy to read: a bright pink jumpsuit with a white upper-chest panel edged in black and silver lines, and a small rescue-style emblem at the centre. I'd make the emblem from printed fabric or painted foam and stitch it on rather than glue, since glue lets go on stretch fabric. White gloves, a silver belt and pink boots finish the suit. The helmet is pink with a black wraparound visor and a silver lower section. Unhelmeted, straight shoulder-length brown hair and rosy cheeks. White sneakers go under the boot covers.
16. Time Force Pink Ranger Costume

Jen's Time Force suit has a white arrow-shaped chest panel outlined in black, and that black outline is the fiddly part. I do it in flexible fabric tape or narrow stretch vinyl after the white panel is on, so any small wobble gets covered. Carry the white onto the gloves and boot covers. The pink helmet has a curved black visor and silver mouth, and the belt can take a circular time-themed buckle. Unhelmeted, straight medium-brown hair at shoulder length and muted pink lipstick. A wrist-style Chrono Morpher keeps your hands free.
17. Quantum Ranger Costume

Eric's Quantum Ranger is red and black, darker than the standard Red, so choose deep crimson rather than fire-engine red. Add a wide black V-shaped chest section and silver trim at shoulders, cuffs, belt and boots. The helmet is red with a broad black visor and sharp silver details. Short dark hair and natural makeup suit the unhelmeted version. A wrist Quantum Morpher and a small dinosaur emblem on the belt identify the character. Black gloves and sturdy black boots anchor it. Keep the accents in stretch fabric or thin foam so you can sit.
18. Wild Force White Ranger Costume

Alyssa's White Wild Force suit needs fully opaque white stretch fabric. Hold it up to a window before you buy, and line it if you can see your hand through it. Add a gold animal-style emblem across the chest and narrow pink panels or stripes down the sides. White gloves, gold wrist cuffs, a metallic belt and white boot covers trimmed in pink finish the suit. The helmet is white with a black visor and a hint of feline shaping. Straight long dark hair and soft pink makeup suit the unhelmeted look. A small charm on the belt and a light wrist Morpher are plenty.
19. Ninja Storm Blue Ranger Costume

Tori's Wind Ranger is sky blue with a navy-and-gold chest panel crossing the torso on the diagonal. Diagonals are where stretch vinyl tends to wrinkle, so stretch the suit gently over a board when you press it on. Blue gloves, navy cuffs, a gold belt and blue boot covers continue the look, and the helmet is blue with a black visor and a small gold forehead detail. Long blond hair straight or in a sporty ponytail. Waterproof mascara helps if you'll be moving a lot. Avoid any loose fabric at the wrists, which catches on everything.
20. Dino Thunder Black Ranger Costume

Tommy's Black Dino Thunder suit is mostly black with gold piping tracing the shoulders, chest, arms and legs. Piping on curves is where I'd slow right down. Use bias-cut trim or stretch gold vinyl strips, never rigid ribbon, which buckles around the shoulder. Add a gold dinosaur emblem at the upper chest, black gloves, a gold belt and black boot covers. The helmet is black with a tinted visor and silver and gold accents. Unhelmeted, medium-length dark hair and maybe light stubble. A bracelet-style Morpher finishes it.
21. SPD Shadow Ranger Costume

Doggie Cruger's Shadow Ranger is navy and black with silver and red. Start with a navy or blue-black jumpsuit, layer a flexible silver chest plate over it, then add red lines along the shoulders and arms, silver gauntlets, a belt and armoured boot covers. The long canine helmet is the hard part; if you make it, keep it light and ventilated, or skip it and play an unhelmeted version. Cool blue face makeup is an option if you want the alien look, but patch-test it on your wrist first. An SPD-style badge, a wrist communicator and cushioned black boots finish it.
22. Mystic Force Red Ranger Costume

Nick's Mystic Force suit adds a cape, and cape length matters more than people think. Hem it above the calf, or you'll step on it climbing stairs. Attach it at the shoulders with snaps or hook-and-loop so it can come off for sitting. Underneath, a fitted red jumpsuit with black side panels and gold piping. The red helmet has a black visor, gold forehead detail and silver mouth. Red gloves, a gold belt and black-and-red boot covers go over comfortable shoes, and the wand Morpher can stay clipped to the belt. Lightweight lining fabric makes a cape that moves rather than hangs.
23. Operation Overdrive Mercury Ranger Costume

Tyzonn's Mercury Ranger is silver-blue with navy panels and copper or bronze piping. Choose soft metallic knit over foil-look fabric; the foil kind tears at the seams and flashes white in photos. Navy panels go along the chest, shoulders, sides and legs. The helmet is silver with a dark visor and blue angular accents. Short silver or pale blond hair works unhelmeted. Silver gloves, a bronze belt and structured silver boot covers finish the suit, with a tracker-style wrist Morpher and navy sneakers hidden underneath.
24. Jungle Fury Purple Wolf Ranger Costume

Purple is a colour that varies hugely between fabric shops, so buy all of R.J.'s purple at once from the same bolt. The suit is deep purple with black side panels and silver piping, and a stylised silver wolf emblem across the chest in fabric paint or heat-transfer vinyl. Purple gloves, black wrist cuffs, a silver belt and black-and-purple boot covers complete the suit. The helmet is purple with a dark visor and pointed silver details. Loose, medium-length dark hair fits his relaxed unhelmeted look. A wrist Morpher is the only prop.
25. RPM Black Ranger Costume

Dillon's RPM suit is matte black with silver-gray panels across shoulders and chest and a bright green emblem near the upper chest. That green is the only colour in the whole costume, so match it carefully to the green on the helmet. Black gloves, a silver belt and black boot covers with metallic cuffs finish it. The helmet is black with green detail and a dark visor framed in silver. Short dark hair and light stubble suit the unhelmeted look. A small engine-cell prop on the belt and black running shoes underneath.
26. Samurai Gold Ranger Costume

Antonio's Gold Samurai suit pairs metallic gold with navy. Wear a gold stretch jumpsuit, or mustard athletic separates with metallic gold panels, then add a navy chest section, dark blue gloves, a black belt and gold boot covers trimmed in blue. The helmet is gold with a black visor and navy around the face. Short dark hair suits the unhelmeted version. A phone-shaped Morpher at the belt and a small sushi symbol nod to the character. Check the gold fabric against your skin before you commit. Some metallic knits are scratchy inside, and you'll notice after an hour.
27. Megaforce Pink Ranger Costume

Emma's Megaforce Pink is a vivid pink suit with a white chest panel outlined in black and a small gold emblem at the centre. The black and white continue onto the gloves and boots. The helmet is pink with a dark visor and silver lower section. Loose blond waves suit her unhelmeted look. A card-style Morpher sits on a white belt. On a suit with this many outlines, I lay all the panels on flat before sewing anything, then try the suit on, because stretch fabric shifts the panels once it's on a body.
28. Super Megaforce Silver Ranger Costume

Orion's Silver Super Megaforce suit has more going on than most: silver, gold, black and navy. Wear a silver jumpsuit with a broad black chest panel trimmed in gold, navy shoulder sections, metallic gloves, a gold belt and silver boot covers. The helmet is silver with a dark visor and angular gold framing. Short blond hair styled up suits him unhelmeted. Keep every line symmetrical, since this many colours look messy the moment one side drifts. Flexible gold trim gives the ornate effect without the weight of real armour.
29. Dino Charge Purple Ranger Costume

Kendall's Dino Charge suit is violet with a silver diagonal chest stripe bordered in black, repeated in black and silver down the gloves and boot covers. The helmet is purple with a dark visor and a silver dino-tooth motif. A smooth bob or low ponytail works for unhelmeted photos. Use stretch silver vinyl for the chest stripe. Standard vinyl cracks along the line where your body bends, usually within an hour of wear. A wrist Morpher and a small capsule prop on the belt finish it.
30. Ninja Steel White Ranger Costume

Hayley's White Ninja Steel suit needs an opaque white base, a silver diagonal chest panel and narrow pink trim. Add white gloves, black wrist cuffs, a silver belt and white boot covers with pink detail. The helmet is white with a dark visor and silver ninja-style lines. Long brown hair in waves or a ponytail. A star-shaped Morpher secured at the waist is the prop. Narrow pink trim on white tends to show any wobble, so I mark the line with tailor's chalk and a ruler before I lay a single inch of it.
31. Beast Morphers Yellow Ranger Costume

Zoey's Beast Morphers suit is bright yellow with black side panels along torso, arms and legs and a gray chest section piped in silver. Yellow again means lining or a nude base layer, since thin yellow goes sheer. Add yellow gloves, a silver belt and yellow-and-black boot covers. The helmet is yellow with a dark visor and angular silver accents. A high ponytail suits her unhelmeted look. A wrist Morpher and a small animal emblem on the belt are plenty. Black sneakers underneath.
32. Dino Fury Green Ranger Costume

Izzy's Dino Fury suit is emerald green with a silver diagonal chest panel trimmed in black, green gloves, a black-and-silver belt and matching boot covers. Her helmet is green with a dark visor and silver tooth-like framing. Unhelmeted, a high ponytail and a touch of green liner. Stretch metallic fabric gives the armoured look while still bending. I'd keep the belt light: a key-style accessory and the wrist Morpher, nothing more, because a crowded belt pulls the whole suit down at the waist.
33. Cosmic Fury Orange Ranger Costume

Orange is a rare Ranger colour, which makes Fern's Cosmic Fury suit a good choice when the group already has the classic five. The base is bright orange with black panels on the torso, shoulders and sides and silver trim at collar, wrists, belt and boot tops. The helmet is orange with a dark visor and sleek silver details. Long dark hair worn straight or low in a ponytail, with warm copper eye makeup. A wrist Morpher and a starry belt emblem finish it. Orange-and-black boot covers go over cushioned sneakers.
34. Red And Pink Ranger Couple Costume

For a couple, the Red and Pink pairing reads at once because the suits share the same white diamond pattern. One wears the red jumpsuit with white diamonds, gloves, a Morpher belt and red boot covers; the other wears matching pink with an optional overskirt. Cut both sets of diamonds from one template so they match exactly. Wear the helmets or carry them at the hip so faces show in photos. Neat dark hair for Red and a high ponytail for Pink. Matching wrist communicators and white sneakers under the boot covers finish both.
35. Power Rangers Family Group Costume

A family team only looks like a team if the construction is identical, so I make one diamond template and cut everyone's from it. Use matching jumpsuits, or long-sleeve shirts and leggings, in red, blue, yellow, pink, green and black, with the same white diamonds, gloves, belts and boot covers. Adults can wear lightweight helmets; children are better in soft masks or headbands, since a helmet visor cuts down what they can see on a dark street. Use skin-safe makeup only. Sew foam Morpher buckles onto elastic belts so they can't drop off, and give everyone white sneakers.
Wear the Helmet or Carry It?
A full helmet looks great and is miserable to wear for long. Visors cut down what you can see, especially to the sides and at your feet, and the dark tint makes dim rooms and stairs genuinely hard. They also get hot and fog up fast. My usual advice is to wear it for photos and carry it, hooked to your belt, the rest of the time.
- Never let a child walk a street in a tinted visor. A soft mask or a coloured headband keeps the character with full vision.
- If you'll drive to the party, take the helmet off first; your side vision in one is poor.
- A thin moisture-wicking cap under the helmet keeps hair flat and stops sweat dripping into your eyes.
- Anti-fog spray for glasses helps on the inside of the visor.
Boot Covers That Don't Slide Down
Boot covers sag because there's nothing holding the top up. I sew a strip of elastic inside the top edge and add a stirrup strap that goes under the sneaker sole. Cut the cover with a seam up the back and a zip or hook-and-loop, so you can get it on over the shoe. Fabric under the sole wears through fast on pavement, so a thin rubber or vinyl patch there is worth the extra ten minutes.
Sew the Classic Red First, Then Branch Out
Colour and chest pattern carry a Ranger costume more than anything else, so spend your time there. A breathable jumpsuit or separates, a crisp chest design, gloves, a belt and boot covers that stay up will get you most of the way, and the helmet can be added or carried. Use stretch materials for anything on the body, keep rigid pieces small, and give children the soft-mask version. Start with the classic Red if you've never sewn one; the team colours that follow are just variations on the same pattern.
