A party animal costume is a pun you can wear: a recognisable animal, then a layer of celebration on top. When I style one, I build it in that order. First the animal, from a print, a onesie or separates in the right colour, plus ears, a tail and a simple painted face. Then the party: a cone hat, a few streamers, a balloon or a little disco ball. Most of the ideas below can be pulled together from your own closet and a single trip to a thrift or craft store. Jungle cats, farm animals, woodland creatures and sea life are all here, and nearly every one is built so you can still sit, dance and eat in it.

Stacking Ears and a Party Hat on One Headband
Nearly every costume below asks you to wear ears and a tiny party hat at the same time, and that's where most of them go wrong by mid-evening. Two separate headbands press on the same spot behind your ears and start to ache, and a cone hat on its own elastic slides sideways as soon as you dance. I put everything on one headband instead.
- Pick a wide plastic or padded fabric headband; thin metal ones pinch.
- Glue or stitch the ears on first, slightly forward of centre so they stand up.
- Snip the elastic off the cone hat and glue a small circle of felt to its base. Glue that felt to the headband between the ears, then let it set overnight.
- Wrap the band's ends in a bit of soft ribbon or a strip of fleece so it grips your hair and doesn't slide back.
- Add two bobby pins through the band into your hair once it's on. Crossed in an X, they hold far better than one.
Hot glue is fine indoors, but it turns brittle in cold air, so if you're heading outside, use a craft glue that stays flexible or put in a few hand stitches as well. Try the whole thing on for twenty minutes at home before the party. If it hurts by then, it'll be unbearable by midnight.
1. Disco Leopard Party Animal Costume

A leopard jumpsuit gives you the whole animal in one piece, which is why I reach for it first. Pick a relaxed cut; a tight jumpsuit pulls at the crotch the moment you sit or dance. Black ankle boots, gold hoops and a slim belt, then a leopard-ear headband and a clip-on tail. A high ponytail, winged liner, a small black nose and a few fine whiskers do the face without a mask. The metallic hat and mini disco ball supply the party. If a jumpsuit feels too dressy, leopard leggings with a plain black tee get you the same joke.
2. Neon Zebra Party Animal Costume

Zebra stripes on their own can look a bit flat; a flash of neon is what makes them feel like a party. Wear a zebra-print top with black leggings and bright sneakers in one neon shade, rather than three. A striped ear headband and a detachable tail. Textured ponytail, or a short black-and-white wig if you like a bolder head. White liner, a few black stripes at the temples and a soft black nose. Pile on neon bead necklaces, carry a bundle of streamers, and perch a tiny cone hat between the ears. Nothing here sticks out, so it's easy in a packed room.
3. Glam Cheetah Party Animal Costume

For a dinner or office party, this is the polished version. A fitted cheetah midi dress, or a matching top and skirt, with gold flats or block-heel boots depending on how much walking you'll do. Spotted ears and a slim tail at the back of the waist. Big curls suit it, and bronze shadow, winged liner, a few whiskers and a dark nose handle the cat. Layer gold necklaces, add a sparkly party hat and carry a small metallic gift box. I keep every accessory in the same warm gold so nothing fights the print.
4. Pink Flamingo Party Animal Costume

Feathers everywhere sounds fun until you're vacuuming pink fluff out of the car for weeks. I'd use feathers only where they count: a feather-trimmed headband and soft cuffs at the wrists. The base is a fluffy pink dress, or a pink top with a layered tulle skirt, plus pink tights and pink sneakers or flats so the colour runs head to toe. Cut a small curved beak from craft foam for the headband, and put your hair up in a high bun so the headpiece shows. Rosy blush, pink shadow and a little shimmer. A bright cone hat, curled ribbon and a balloon tied loosely at the wrist.
5. Birthday Bunny Party Animal Costume

This bunny is mostly pastel basics: a white sweater or tee, a pink skirt, white leggings and clean sneakers. Tall ears, a fluffy clip-on tail and a pastel bow tie. Low ponytail, pigtails or loose curls sit comfortably under the ears. Pink blush, a little nose and fine whiskers. I'd clip the miniature birthday hat to the ear headband rather than adding a second elastic, and stick colourful pom-poms on the sweater with fashion tape so they come off clean afterwards. It's comfortable enough for a school event or a long evening on the doorstep handing out treats.
6. Silver Fox Party Animal Costume

The joke works on two levels here, and grown-ups tend to get it right away. Gray tailored trousers with a silver sequin top, or a soft gray jumpsuit with a bit of sheen. Charcoal ankle boots, a faux-fur fox tail and pointed gray ears. A sleek silver ponytail or a short gray wig. Smoky shadow, a black nose, white highlight around the eyes and delicate whiskers give a fox face that still looks dressed for dinner. Sequins shed, so check the top's seams before the night. A metallic hat, silver streamers and a small disco-ball purse; on a cool gray base every bit of sparkle shows.
7. Dancing Lion Party Animal Costume

The mane is where this lion lives or dies. I build it on a headband with loops of chunky yarn tied on in layers, short at the front and longer at the sides, so it frames the face without hiding your eyes or your peripheral vision. The base can be a golden-brown jumpsuit, a tan sweatshirt and trousers, or matching leggings, with brown sneakers and a simple tail. Golden shadow, a brown nose, whiskers and softly shaded cheeks keep the face friendly. A bright party crown on top of the mane, wrist streamers that move while you dance, and one star-shaped prop.
8. Sparkly Tiger Party Animal Costume

Orange and black read from across the room, and that's what you want in a crowd. An orange top with black leggings, or a striped jumpsuit if you'd rather one piece. Combat boots or sneakers, tiger ears, and a striped tail fastened firmly at the waist; a tail held by one safety pin swings loose by the second song. Paint a few soft black stripes on the cheeks and forehead over orange and bronze shadow, then a black nose and neat whiskers. A glittery hat, metallic garland worn as a scarf, a small quiet noisemaker and sequinned cuffs. It suits teens as easily as adults.
9. Confetti Panda Party Animal Costume

A panda is basically a white sweatshirt with black trousers, black sneakers and black fingerless gloves, which makes it one of the warmest ideas on this list. Rounded ears and a small tail, with two buns under the ears or a short black wig. Go light on white face makeup; a full white base sweats off on a long night. Soft black patches around the eyes and a small nose are enough. For the party, a rainbow hat, multicoloured suspenders, and felt confetti dots tacked on with a few stitches. Carry a striped gift bag with tissue paper instead of loose confetti, which hosts rarely thank you for.
10. Karaoke Koala Party Animal Costume

If comfort is your priority, the koala gives you a hoodie, joggers and sneakers all in gray, and nobody will think you skipped the costume. Big fuzzy ears, a small tail and white faux-fur panels at the chest or wrists. The hood frames the ears, so skip the wig. Soft gray shadow, a rounded black nose and white highlights. Clip a tiny glitter hat near one ear and make a toy microphone from painted cardboard or craft foam. A few metallic stars stuck to the hoodie catch the light, and the karaoke joke makes itself the first time someone hands you a real mic.
11. Balloon Giraffe Party Animal Costume

Irregular brown felt spots on a tan dress or jumpsuit turn it into a giraffe; cut them uneven and vary the size, because neat circles look like a cow. Sew or fabric-glue the spots, since felt peels off stretchy knits once you move. Brown boots, a long tail with a dark yarn tassel, and ossicones made from a headband, pipe cleaners and soft pom-poms, with small ears beside them. Tuck your hair behind the headband or wear a low braid. Warm brown shadow and a few cheek spots. Tie a light balloon to a wristband, set a tiny hat between the horns, and the tall headpiece does the rest.
12. Disco Cow Party Animal Costume

Silver is what pushes a cow into disco territory. Start with spotted overalls over a black shirt, or black felt patches on a white jumpsuit. Tinsel around the shoulders looks great and sheds a little everywhere, so I'd keep it to one loop. Sturdy boots or white sneakers, a thin tail and a headband with soft ears and small horns. Braids, a ponytail or loose waves. White liner, black cheek patches, a pink nose and natural lashes. Top it with a mini disco-ball hat and carry a cardboard dance-floor sign. A cow is also an easy anchor if your friends are going as a farmyard.
13. Celebration Dalmatian Party Animal Costume

Felt spots on a white long-sleeve shirt and white trousers are the whole Dalmatian, and they read from a long way off. I stick them on with temporary fabric adhesive if the clothes have to go back into normal rotation afterwards. Black sneakers, floppy spotted ears and a thin tail. Low ponytail or hair tucked under the ear band. Paint a black patch around one eye, a rounded nose and a few dots near the mouth. A bright bow collar, a tilted cone hat and ribbons at the wrists bring the party. Teachers like this one because it's simple, warm and easy to explain to small children.
14. Black Cat Party Animal Costume

A black cat is the costume most people can make in ten minutes, so the party layer has to work a bit harder. Start with a black jumpsuit, a fitted top with wide-leg trousers, or a black dress with opaque tights, and wear ankle boots you can dance in. Cat ears and a curved tail; a clip-on tail stays perkier if there's some wire in it. Sleek straight hair or a high ponytail keeps the shape clean. Winged liner, a small triangle nose, whiskers and a bit of silver shimmer. Add a rhinestone collar, a metallic hat and curling ribbon on one wrist, and carry a disco-ball bag that also holds your phone.
15. Mini Mouse Party Animal Costume

Round ears do all the talking on a mouse, so make them big. I cut them from stiff felt or craft foam and glue them to a sturdy headband, then echo the shape with two low buns. The base is a gray sweater tucked into gray trousers or a knee-length skirt, with pink flats or gray sneakers. Soft gray shadow, a pink nose, white whiskers and rosy cheeks. A bright bow tie, a polka-dot hat and a present-shaped purse make it a party guest. Keep the fabric tail short enough that nobody behind you can step on it.
16. Rainbow Frog Party Animal Costume

Green overalls, a green jumpsuit or a hoodie with matching leggings all make a fine frog. Webbed shoe covers cut from flexible craft foam are the fun part, but foam wears through on pavement fast, so I'd save them for indoors. Big frog eyes on a headband or sewn to the top of the hood, with your hair pulled back. Green shadow, round rosy cheeks and a curved smile. A rainbow bow tie, a striped cone hat and streamers at the wrists bring in the colour, and a cardboard lily pad sign gives you something to hold.
17. Glam Peacock Party Animal Costume

A peacock tail is tempting to build huge, but a wide fan blocks hallways and knocks things off tables. I make a small removable fan from craft feathers or patterned cardstock and pin it at the waist, so it comes off before you sit. Wear a teal jumpsuit, or a fitted blue top with a flowing green skirt, and jewel-toned flats. An elegant bun under a feathered headband. Blend blue and green shadow around the eyes with tiny gold accents. A jeweled crown, sparkly bracelets and a gift-shaped metallic clutch make it a party bird rather than a garden one.
18. Midnight Owl Party Animal Costume

Layers are the point of this owl, and they make it one of the warmest choices here for an outdoor party. A brown sweater over a skirt or trousers covered in overlapping felt feather shapes, sewn from the hem upward so each row overlaps the one below. Flat brown boots and short wing panels from the sleeves to the sides. A headband with pointed tufts shapes the face. Bronze shadow, strong round liner and a small gold beak drawn with face-safe makeup. A navy hat with silver stars, a crescent cardboard prop and a sequinned collar finish it.
19. Social Butterfly Party Animal Costume

The pun here does a lot of work, so the costume itself can stay simple. A bright fitted top with a matching midi skirt or trousers, and flats in one of the wing colours. Pick wings that sit close to the body; big ones get crushed in every doorway and hug. An antenna headband with tiny pom-poms, soft waves or a braided crown, and shadow that matches the wings, with a few face gems at the outer corners. Stick-on gems pop off with sweat, so press them on with a dot of lash glue. A tiny hat, bead necklaces and an address-book prop decorated with butterflies for the social joke.
20. Busy Bee Party Animal Costume

Bee stripes are easy to find on a sweater, or you can pair a yellow top with a black tulle skirt and opaque tights. Black sneakers or boots, small translucent wings and an antenna headband, with a high bun under it so the headpiece stays put. Yellow shadow, black winged liner, rosy cheeks and a little shimmer. I'd skip the honey prop and lean into the party: a striped cone hat, pom-pom bracelets and a little dance-card clipboard. A small black belt bag holds your keys. Bees also slot easily into a group where everyone picks a different bug.
21. Disco Shark Party Animal Costume

A shark can look fierce, so the fix is soft gray and plenty of sparkle. Wear a gray hoodie and joggers, or a sleek gray jumpsuit. Stuff the dorsal fin lightly with fiberfill and sew it to the back of the hood or along the spine; an unstuffed fin flops over within minutes. Small side fins at the sleeves, white sneakers, and friendly felt eyes near the top of the hood. Ring the hood opening with white felt triangles instead of painting teeth on your face. A blue hat, shiny streamers and a light disco-ball prop keep it goofy.
22. Beach Dolphin Party Animal Costume

Fins along the arms look sweet but bump into people at a crowded party, so I keep them small and stitch them flat along the sleeve seam. Start with a silver-blue jumpsuit or a pale blue top and leggings, plus white sneakers. A curved dolphin headband or a rounded hood tells people which sea creature you are. A sleek ponytail on long hair, or temporary silver spray on short hair. Blue shimmer around the eyes and a pearly cheek highlight. A turquoise party hat, reflective ribbon bracelets and a beach-ball purse. It's light, so it suits warm rooms and sea-creature groups.
23. Confetti Octopus Party Animal Costume

Eight tentacles is a lot of costume, and the trick is keeping them off the floor. I sew stuffed fabric tubes to a wide belt and cut them so the longest stops at mid-calf; any lower and you'll trip on your own legs. A purple sweatshirt dress over leggings, or a purple hoodie with fitted trousers, and purple sneakers. A high bun under a headband with big rounded eyes. Lavender shadow, circle cheek details and a little iridescent shimmer. Felt confetti spots on the tentacles, a striped hat and curling ribbon. Stuffed with recycled fiberfill, the whole thing stays surprisingly light.
24. Red Lobster Party Animal Costume

Removable claw mitts are the detail I'd insist on, because you'll want your hands within ten minutes of arriving. A red tracksuit, jumpsuit or sweater with matching trousers, plus red sneakers. Sew a segmented felt tail with a little stuffing in each section so it curls, and fasten it at the back of the waist. A red headband with bendy antennae. Hair back, red shadow, rosy cheeks and a pearly highlight. The silver crown, blue streamers and a tiny present under one arm make the joke: a seafood dinner that came to the party instead.
25. Formal Penguin Party Animal Costume

A penguin already looks dressed for a celebration, which makes it one of the easiest to assemble. Black trousers, a white shirt, a black blazer and a bright bow tie for colour. Loafers, sneakers or flat boots. Small black wing panels sewn under the arms and a headband with a soft orange beak. Slick your hair back. White highlights around the eyes, a tiny orange nose detail and rosy cheeks. A sparkly cone hat and a gift box tied with contrasting ribbon. Throw a black coat over it outdoors and you still look like a penguin, which few costumes can say.
26. Sparkly Polar Bear Party Animal Costume

White fuzzy fabric picks up every crumb and spill, so I dress for this one knowing it'll need a wash afterwards. A white sweater dress with thick tights, or a fuzzy pullover with white trousers, plus white boots and a small round tail. Rounded ears on a white headband with a silver crown between them. Loose curls, a low ponytail or a tucked braid. Pearly shadow, a black nose, soft whisker dots and pink blush. A strand of silver tinsel at the neck and a pale blue balloon. For a cold night, thermal layers underneath vanish under the white.
27. Sleepy Sloth Party Animal Costume

The humour comes from a famously slow animal dressed for a big night out. A brown hoodie, soft joggers and fuzzy sneakers, or slippers only if they have proper outdoor soles; indoor slippers soak through on a damp sidewalk in minutes. Curved felt claws at the wrists and a simple ear headband. Leave your hair loose and slightly messy. Brown and cream around the eyes, a small dark nose and a gently shaded mouth. A bright party hat, shiny necklaces and ribbons from the sleeves, and carry a small pillow covered in felt confetti for the sleepy punchline.
28. Trash Panda Party Animal Costume

The raccoon nickname makes this an easy laugh, and it stays clean if the trash can is just a silver tote bag. A gray striped sweater with black trousers and sturdy sneakers. Rounded ears, a long striped tail and black gloves. Hide your hair under a gray beanie with the ears sewn on, then perch a bright party hat on top. The mask is black makeup around the eyes; I set it with powder so it doesn't smudge into raccoon-on-a-bad-night territory. A dark nose, whisker dots, felt confetti on the tote and metallic streamers at the wrists. No real waste, no sharp metal.
29. Confetti Squirrel Party Animal Costume

The tail is half the squirrel, so it needs to be big and still light. I'd make it from layered tulle over a soft wire frame, which holds a curl and weighs far less than faux fur. A rust sweater with brown leggings or corduroy trousers and ankle boots. Small round ears on a headband under a gold party hat. A textured ponytail or loose curls echo the fluffy tail. Copper shadow, a brown nose, whiskers and a little highlight. Carry a cardboard acorn dotted with metallic confetti, and wear a crossbody bag that hides under the tail.
30. Woodland Deer Party Animal Costume

Deer looks gentle and grown-up, so I keep the party layer small: a miniature floral crown set between the antlers instead of a cone hat. Start with a tan dress, or a brown sweater with a skirt, plus cream tights and brown ankle boots. A headband with small antlers and ears, and loose waves, side braids or a low bun beneath it. Warm brown shadow, a dark nose and a few white dots along the cheeks. Colourful ribbons on one wrist add movement. A tiny wrapped parcel or a cardboard star wand, and it fits easily into a group of forest animals.
31. Neon Wolf Party Animal Costume

Charcoal and electric blue give the wolf a night-out look rather than a menacing one. A gray jumpsuit, a faux-fur vest over black separates, or a charcoal hoodie set, with black combat boots, pointed ears and a full gray tail. A silver-gray wig is optional; your own hair is fine. Smoky eyes, a dark nose, white highlights and angled cheek shading suggest the wolf without a snarl. Neon bracelets, a blue party hat and reflective streamers near the shoulders keep it playful. On a dark street, those reflective bits also help drivers spot you.
32. Birthday Gorilla Party Animal Costume

Full gorilla suits are hot, hard to see out of and impossible to eat in, which is why this version skips the mask entirely. A fuzzy black sweater with relaxed black trousers and sturdy sneakers. Padded gray chest detailing, soft ear pieces and big removable gloves. Wear your hair with volume or a short textured black wig. Gray shading at the temples and cheeks, a broad dark nose and expressive brows, with the mouth left clear. A colourful crown, a bright bow tie, ribbon bracelets, and a bunch of balloons or a large empty gift box for the birthday twist.
33. Pink Hippo Party Animal Costume

A pink or lavender sweatsuit is the comfortable base, and a sparkly tutu over the trousers turns the hippo into a party guest. Matching sneakers and a stuffed round tail. Make the small ears and a wide soft snout on a headband rather than a face mask, and pull your hair into a bun so it sits securely. Pink and gray shadow, round cheek shading, and a couple of white tooth shapes painted carefully at the lower lip. Keep it cartoon-cheerful. A silver hat, wrist streamers and a small balloon bouquet, and it sizes up or down easily for older kids, teens and adults.
34. Golden Elephant Party Animal Costume

Big fabric ears pull a headband backwards, so I use a wide, padded band and add a thin elastic behind the head to hold it. Gray jumpsuit or a soft sweater with wide-leg trousers, and gray flats, sneakers or boots. A light trunk made from a stuffed fabric tube, stopping above the chest so it never sits in front of your mouth. Low bun or tucked braid. Silver shadow, soft gray contour and a touch of gold shimmer at the temples. A gold crown, metallic cuffs, a gift-shaped clutch and a slim gray tail give you the polished elephant without a rubber mask.
35. Celebration Crocodile Party Animal Costume

A green hoodie and trousers, or a fitted green jumpsuit, plus green sneakers. Felt triangles down the back give you scales, and I sew them along the spine so they don't peel off when you lean against a wall. Keep the padded tail light and short; a long tail sweeps drinks off low tables. Friendly crocodile eyes on the hood with white felt teeth around its edge. Your face stays visible, with green shadow and a few scale marks at the temples. A yellow cone hat, a bright bow tie, wrist streamers and a gift box with a simple water pattern.
36. Disco Dinosaur Party Animal Costume

A green or purple sweatsuit becomes a dinosaur with a row of soft felt plates from the hood down the back. Stiffen the plates with a layer of craft foam inside or they'll fold over. Add a padded tail that clears the floor, matching sneakers and fingerless gloves with small felt claws. A hood with big cartoon eyes means no wig or extra headpiece. Matching shadow, shimmery cheek scales and rosy blush. Pop a metallic hat between the plates and carry a cardboard disco ball. Everything attaches with light stitches, so the sweatsuit goes back to normal life on November 1.
37. Rainbow Unicorn Party Animal Costume

A unicorn is festive before you add a single party detail, so I keep the extras light. A white jumpsuit, a pastel dress with leggings, or an iridescent top and skirt, with white boots or glittery sneakers. A rainbow tail and a headband with ears and a soft gold horn. Loose curls, a braided ponytail or temporary pastel streaks; the streaks rub onto collars, so wear a top you don't mind marking. Lavender and blue shadow, pearly highlight, a few face gems. Circle a tiny crown around the base of the horn, add ribbon bracelets and carry a star-shaped gift.
38. Festive Llama Party Animal Costume

Texture is what makes a llama, and yarn pom-poms are the easiest way to get it. A cream sweater and white trousers with tan boots or sneakers and a fluffy tail. A llama-ear headband decorated with colourful pom-poms, woven trim and a mini party hat. Long hair goes in two braids; shorter hair tucks behind the ears. Soft beige shadow, rosy cheeks, a small nose and white highlights. A bright patterned scarf with more pom-poms along its edge, and a gift bag decorated with tassels. It's warm enough for a chilly October night outside.
39. Party Goat Animal Costume

Most of the goat comes out of a neutral closet: a gray sweater with black jeans, or a taupe jumpsuit with comfortable boots. Pointed ears, curved light horns and a short tail. A low ponytail or textured bun under the horned headband. Gray-brown shadow and a shaded nose. The faux-fur goatee is funny but itchy, so attach it with a soft elastic under the chin rather than glue on your skin. A bright crown between the horns, a bow tie, and a cardboard award ribbon declaring you the greatest party guest of all time.
40. Disco Chicken Party Animal Costume

Feathers only at the tail and headband keep this chicken from moulting all over the floor. A white sweatshirt dress over yellow leggings, or a white top with white trousers. Yellow sneakers, and red felt shoe covers if you want the chicken feet. A headband with a red comb and a small beak, and a feather-trimmed tail for volume at the back. High bun under the comb. Yellow shadow, red blush and a tiny orange beak drawn on the nose. A silver hat, metallic garland, ribbon cuffs and an egg-shaped gift prop. In a farmyard group, the chicken is the one people spot first.
41. Birthday Duck Party Animal Costume

Bright yellow separates make a cheerful duck: a yellow hoodie with matching leggings, or a yellow dress over opaque tights. Orange sneakers or flats, plus webbed shoe covers cut from flexible orange foam; these wear through outdoors, so I'd keep spares or go without for trick-or-treating. Round eyes and a soft orange bill on the hood or a headband. Hair tucked back or in low pigtails. Yellow shadow, orange cheek accents and a glossy highlight. A blue birthday hat, a striped bow tie, curling ribbon at the wrists and a balloon or gift-shaped crossbody bag.
42. Pink Pig Party Animal Costume

A pig snout on a headband sits in front of your mouth if you're not careful, so I angle it up onto the nose or skip it and draw a pink snout with makeup. Blush-pink jumpsuit or a pink sweater with matching trousers, pink sneakers, a curly tail and soft triangle ears. Two buns or a high ponytail. Rosy blush, pink shadow and a few freckles. A sparkly hat, pearl-bead necklaces and a bright tulle collar. Carry a tiny wrapped gift or a clean bucket tied with ribbon, and you sit naturally next to a cow, chicken, goat or sheep.
43. Confetti Sheep Party Animal Costume

A white fleece jacket is already woolly, which saves you sewing a single cotton ball. Wear it with white or black trousers and black sneakers or ankle boots, and wrap fluffy white fabric around the wrists and ankles. A black headband with sheep ears and a tiny tail. Compact bun or hair under a white cap. Soft gray shadow, a black nose and pink blush. Pin colourful felt circles across the fleece as oversized confetti, add a tilted party hat, and carry a balloon on a short ribbon. It's the warmest costume in the farmyard set.
44. Rodeo Horse Party Animal Costume

A faux-fur mane stitched along the centre of a hood stands up better than one glued to a headband, and it moves when you turn your head. Wear a brown jumpsuit, or a fitted brown top with matching trousers, plus comfortable brown boots and a long yarn tail. The ears go upright above the mane, with room for a small metallic party hat. A low ponytail echoes the tail. Warm brown makeup, a white stripe down the nose and soft cheek shading. A colourful neck scarf, ribbon-trimmed cuffs and a cardboard horseshoe decorated with stars give it the rodeo side.
45. Group Zoo Party Animal Costume

In a group, every friend picks an animal and the party pieces tie it together. Spread the looks out: a leopard, zebra, flamingo, panda, lion and giraffe give you a good spread of colour. Each person sorts out their own base, ears, tail, face and shoes. The group then shares identical metallic hats, matching bow ties and the same ribbon bracelets. Hand everyone a different light prop, so photos have a balloon, a gift box, a disco ball and streamers rather than six of the same. Leave masks out so faces show in every picture. It scales easily from three friends to an entire office or family.
Making Six Different Animals Look Like One Crew
The fun of party animals in a group is that nobody has to match. The risk is that a leopard, a duck and a gorilla standing together just look like three people who didn't talk to each other. One shared layer fixes that.
- Agree on one party colour, gold or silver usually, and have everyone's hat, bow tie or cuffs in it.
- Buy the hats together in one pack so the shape and size are identical; that sameness is what the eye picks up first.
- Mix soft and bold animals, so a flamingo or unicorn sits between a tiger and a wolf and the photo has some rhythm.
- Keep tails short and wings small if the group will dance together, because big pieces collide in a tight circle.
Whiskers and Noses That Last Past Midnight
Almost every face here is a small nose and a few whiskers, and that's easy to do with an eyeliner pencil or a cream face crayon. Patch-test anything new on the inside of your wrist the day before. Draw the nose and whiskers, then press translucent powder over them with a puff; it stops the lines smearing when you laugh, drink or kiss a cheek. Carry a cotton bud and the pencil for touch-ups, and take it all off with an oil cleanser or micellar water before bed rather than scrubbing.
Animal First, Party Hat Second
Every one of these comes down to the same order: get the animal right first, then layer the party on top. A comfortable base in your animal's colours, ears, a tail, a simple painted face and shoes you can dance in, and only then the hat, ribbons, balloons or disco ball. Keep props light and your face uncovered and you'll last the whole night. If you're dressing a group, let everyone pick their own creature and share the party pieces. From sparkly jungle cats to cozy farm animals, there's one here for every budget and every closet.
