Red hair is a head start at Halloween. Natural, dyed or borrowed from a wig, it puts a strong color right at the top of the costume, where people look first. I build red-haired costumes the other way round from most: hair first, then the clothes and makeup that make sense with it. Below you'll find animated heroines, comic characters, storybook girls, a few cozy animals and some classic Halloween figures, from mermaids and cowgirls to witches and a scarecrow. Each one covers the outfit, hair, makeup, prop and shoes, and most of them come together from closet basics, a thrift trip and a bag of felt.

Shaping Your Own Red Hair So It Holds Until Midnight
Most of these looks depend on a hair shape: Pippi's braids, Wilma's height, Ariel's volume, Lucy's rolled bangs. Natural hair drops and frizzes over an evening, especially in damp weather, so I plan the hair before anything else.
- Start the night before. Curls set on rollers or in pin curls overnight hold much longer than ones done with an iron an hour before you leave.
- Build height on a base. A foam hair form or a padded bun clipped into a firm ponytail carries an updo better than teasing alone, and it's kinder to your hair.
- Use more pins than you think. Cross two bobby pins in an X at each weight point, and slide them in against the scalp, not on top of the hair.
- Set with spray in layers. Mist, wait a few seconds, then mist again; one heavy blast leaves the hair wet and makes it collapse.
- Carry a small kit: spare pins, a travel hairspray and a hair tie for when the shape gives up.
Red hair also shows grease and flatness more than people expect, because it reflects light. A little dry shampoo at the roots before you style gives it grip and keeps the color looking even.
1. Ariel Mermaid Red Hair Costume

Ariel lets long red hair be the star, so I keep the rest simple. A fitted purple top and a shimmering green maxi skirt that flares near the hem give you the tail. Scale-print skirts look great standing still, but pleated satin is easier to walk in for a full evening. Brush the hair out into big loose waves and don't flatten the crown. Pearl earrings, a glowy eye and a pink lip are enough, and a toy fork or a shell does the character work. Green flats under the hem, and a nude long-sleeve top underneath if the night is cold.
2. Poison Ivy Red Hair Costume

Poison Ivy is the costume where cheap faux ivy shows itself fastest. Those garlands have wire stems that slide out of place, so I pin them every few inches along the neckline, sleeves and waist of a green jumpsuit, fitted midi or bodysuit with opaque leggings. Soft dramatic curls in your own red hair, or a long copper wig with a side part, suit her. Green shadow, winged liner and a few tiny leaf gems keep the face botanical without full body paint. Leafy wrist cuffs and a small vine-wrapped clutch are plenty. Green ankle boots or platform sneakers handle the walking.
3. Jessica Rabbit Red Hair Costume

Jessica Rabbit is the most glamorous idea here, and you can keep it tasteful. A long red sequin gown with a fitted shape, a supportive neckline and a slit you can sit in is the classic. Sequins get heavy and scratchy over hours, so red velvet or satin with a sparkly shawl is a fair swap. Smooth side-parted waves falling over one shoulder are the hair. Purple shadow, black liner and a red lip, then the long purple gloves, which are the detail that tells people who you are. Cushioned block heels and a faux-fur wrap keep you comfortable and warm.
4. Merida Archer Princess Red Hair Costume

Merida was made for naturally curly red hair. Scrunch in a light mousse while your hair is damp and let it air dry; brushing curls afterwards turns them to frizz, so separate them with your fingers instead. A thick copper wig works if your hair is straight. The dress is a long teal or forest-green medieval style with full sleeves and simple gold trim, cut loose enough to move in. Freckles and rosy cheeks are all the makeup she needs. A wide brown belt, a tartan sash and a small pouch finish it, with a gold pendant or a little bear accessory instead of a bow and arrows.
5. Daphne Blake Red Hair Costume

Daphne comes together from regular clothes. A long-sleeve purple mini or knee-length dress, pink or lavender opaque tights and a bright green scarf tied snugly at the neck. Her hair is a smooth shoulder-length blowout with the ends curved under, held by a purple headband. If your red hair is long, a few rollers and some pins at the nape can fake the shorter shape. Lilac shadow and a pink lip suit her. A magnifying glass makes the mystery-solving clear. Purple flats or low boots finish it, and three friends as the rest of the gang turn it into a group costume.
6. Kim Possible Red Hair Costume

Need something built from comfortable closet basics? Kim Possible takes a fitted black long-sleeve mock neck, olive cargo pants and a sturdy brown belt. Wear natural red hair straight with a deep side part, or a shoulder-length auburn wig with flipped ends. Matte skin, warm neutral shadow and a nude lip keep the face simple. Black fingerless gloves and a toy communicator cut from painted cardboard are the character details, and a real belt pouch holds your phone. Black combat boots or lace-up sneakers. There's no sewing involved, which is the whole appeal.
7. Jessie Cowgirl Red Hair Costume

Jessie's costume is bright and cheerful, and the hat matters more than anything else. A wide-brim red cowgirl hat is what makes her, so buy that first and build down. A white button-up with yellow felt panels at the shoulders and cuffs, high-waisted jeans and a brown belt come next, with cow-print fabric wrapped around the lower legs. A long red braid with a yellow ribbon, or a braided auburn wig. Freckles and rosy cheeks for makeup. A loop of soft rope is the prop, with brown cowboy boots. Stretch denim and a cotton shirt make it far easier to wear all day.
8. Wilma Flintstone Red Hair Costume

Wilma's silhouette is so simple that the hair has to do the work. Her tall rounded updo needs support; a foam hair form or clip-in bun pinned into a high ponytail gives height without teasing your hair to pieces. The dress is a white one-shoulder knee-length shift with a jagged felt hem, worn over a white long-sleeve top and leggings if you'd like more coverage. A chunky white bead necklace, a stone-patterned bag and a soft coral lip. Light blue shadow and winged liner. White flats or low wedges. Fred and Barney are easy costumes for a partner or family.
9. Lucy Ricardo Red Hair Costume

Lucy Ricardo is a fifties polka-dot fit-and-flare dress, a white apron, pearl earrings and a structured handbag. The hair is a curled updo with short rolled bangs, which takes some practice on long hair; I'd pin-curl it the night before and set it with spray. A short curly wig pinned securely at the hairline is the shortcut. Defined brows, black liner and a bright red lip finish the face. Carry a wooden spoon, a recipe card or an empty candy box rather than real food, which ends up on the dress. Low black pumps, and a friend in a suit as Ricky.
10. Anne Shirley Red Hair Costume

Anne Shirley suits long natural red hair and is gentle enough for school events. A modest blue, brown or sage prairie dress with a Peter Pan collar and puffed sleeves, a cream pinafore on top and a straw boater with plain ribbon. Center-part the hair and make two neat braids. Braids look tidier if you dampen the hair slightly and braid tight, then loosen them gently with your fingers. Drawn freckles and pink cheeks. A stack of old books or a small carpet bag. Brown lace-up ankle boots and cream socks. Cotton pieces keep it comfortable.
11. Pippi Longstocking Red Hair Costume

Pippi is all about the sticking-out braids. I run flexible craft wire covered in ribbon through each braid, with the sharp ends bent back and wrapped in tape so they can't scratch. Keep the wire light, or the braids droop by the end of the party. A patchwork pinafore or an oversized blue dress over a striped long-sleeve shirt, mismatched knee socks and sturdy lace-up boots finish the outfit. Freckles and a big grin are the makeup. A toy horse or a small vintage suitcase is the prop. Bike shorts under the dress make cartwheels possible.
12. Ms. Frizzle Red Hair Costume

Ms. Frizzle is a fun one to plan around a single theme. Pick one lesson, like space or dinosaurs, and cover a navy or purple fit-and-flare dress with removable felt shapes for that subject only; a mix of planets, numbers and leaves looks messy from a distance. A high messy bun with springy curls loose at the face suits her red hair. Star earrings, bright blue shadow, a pink lip and a lizard brooch. A small globe or toy school bus is the prop. Star clips on comfortable flats tie the shoes to the dress. Teachers can wear this all day.
13. Ginny Weasley Red Hair Costume

Ginny is school pieces with a magical touch: a white collared shirt, a gray V-neck sweater, a dark pleated skirt or trousers, a burgundy-and-gold striped tie and a black robe below the knee. The robe is easy to sew from a simple rectangle pattern if you can't find one. Straight or lightly waved red hair with a middle part. Soft mascara, pink cheeks and tinted balm. A well-worn notebook, a small broom accessory or a cardboard spellbook. A short soft foam wand is safer than a hard one in a crowd. Black loafers or lace-up boots with dark knee socks.
14. Scarlet Witch Red Hair Costume

This Scarlet Witch skips the armor and leans on deep red layers. A burgundy tunic over black leggings and a long red coat with structured shoulders give the shape. Loose waves frame the face. The headpiece is flexible red foam mounted on a headband; the trick is to cut the band of foam narrow at the sides so it hugs your head instead of standing off it. Burgundy shadow, precise liner and a berry lip. Red fingerless gloves and some glowing costume jewelry suggest the magic. Black boots, and lightweight fabrics so you don't overheat indoors.
15. Black Widow Red Hair Costume

Black Widow is sleek, comfortable and easy to move in. A black long-sleeve jumpsuit, or a fitted athletic top with black cargo pants, and a wide utility belt with a red felt hourglass. Tousled shoulder-length waves, or a copper bob wig for a different version. Smoky brown shadow, winged liner and a neutral lip. Red wrist cuffs, a belt pouch and a badge. If jumpsuits make bathroom trips a hassle, and they do, separates give the same look and get worn again. Flat black boots with cushioned soles finish it.
16. Jean Grey Red Hair Costume

Jean Grey's classic look is red hair against blue and gold. A fitted blue long-sleeve jumpsuit or a cobalt top with leggings, a wide gold belt, gold wrist cuffs and yellow stretch boot covers. Boot covers need an elastic strip under the arch or they bunch at the ankle. Smooth, full waves with a clean side part. Warm gold shadow and a muted red lip. A circular bird emblem in felt sits on the chest, and a gold sash moves nicely when you turn. Yellow flats or boots. Stand in front of a plain wall for photos so the bright colors read.
17. Starfire Red Hair Costume

Starfire is bright purple with long red hair. A modest purple mini dress over opaque tights or leggings, silver trim from metallic fabric tape at the neckline, waist and cuffs, a green pendant at the collar and foam wrist cuffs. Fabric tape lifts at the curves of a neckline, so snip little notches along its edge before you press it down. Straight, sleek red hair, or a waist-length crimson wig for the full effect. Lavender shadow, glowing skin and a few green face gems. Purple boots. A purple tunic with fitted pants gives more coverage.
18. Princess Fiona Red Hair Costume

Princess Fiona is rich green fabric and a loose red braid. A floor-length emerald dress with long sleeves, a fitted bodice and gold ribbon trim, with a narrow gold cord at the waist. Braid the hair loosely down the back and tie it with green ribbon. You can keep your natural skin or add a little skin-safe green makeup for the ogre version; patch-test it on your inner wrist the day before. A gold tiara and a pink lip. A fabric sunflower or tiny book is the prop. Flats under the skirt beat heels outdoors.
19. Bloom Fairy Red Hair Costume

Bloom is blue clothes, light wings and long fiery hair. A bright blue fit-and-flare dress, or a crop-length top over a camisole with a blue skirt, sheer tights and translucent wings on soft elastic straps. Waist-length waves, with clip-in extensions if your hair is shorter; clip them in below a horizontal section so the tracks don't show. Turquoise shadow, a little shimmer and a pink lip. Glitter migrates everywhere and lasts for days, so I'd keep it to one small area of the face. A blue gem necklace, a soft wand and narrow wings that fit through doors.
20. Mera Ocean Queen Red Hair Costume

An ocean queen needs green and gold around long, glossy red waves. A green scale-print maxi dress or long-sleeve jumpsuit is the base, with metallic gold trim at the waist, shoulders and wrists. Shell clips pinned behind one ear add the sea. Sea-green shadow, a dewy base, a coral lip and a touch of pearl highlight. A light gold crown and a turquoise pendant set the royalty. A shell clutch or a small orb covered in iridescent paper is the prop. Green boots or flats, and thermal leggings under the skirt on a cold night.
21. Sally Rag Doll Red Hair Costume

Sally is a lovely sewing project if you've been saving fabric scraps. A knee-length dress pieced from mismatched pastel, striped and patterned panels, over a light blue long-sleeve top and opaque tights. Straight center-parted red hair, or a long yarn wig for a handmade look. Draw curved stitch lines on the cheeks and arms with a black liner pencil; cream liners smudge onto a collar, so set them with translucent powder. Lavender shadow and a berry lip. A fabric flower or a small stuffed black cat. Black lace-up boots for trick-or-treating.
22. Chucky Doll Red Hair Costume

This family-friendly Chucky is toy overalls and doll makeup, nothing graphic. Blue denim overalls over a striped long-sleeve shirt in red, blue, green and yellow; that shirt is the detail people recognize, so look hard for the right one. Felt buttons and patches make the overalls look like a toy. A tousled short red bob, or a choppy copper wig tucked under a backward cap. Freckles, round rosy cheeks and exaggerated lashes. A bright toy box or candy bucket, never anything sharp. Red sneakers or high-tops finish it.
23. Pennywise Clown Red Hair Costume

This is a clown inspired by the famous one, made friendly. A cream puff-sleeve blouse, a layered knee-length skirt and three red pom-poms down the front, with a wide ruffled collar of gathered tulle. Tulle collars collapse if you gather them loosely, so I gather two layers tightly onto a ribbon. Red ribbon cuffs at wrists and ankles. Fluffy side sections of red hair, or a short orange-red curly wig. A light white-toned base, red lip, tiny red nose and thin curved lines above the brows. One red balloon tied to your wrist. Cream tights and red lace-up boots.
24. Mad Hatter Red Hair Costume

The Mad Hatter is exaggerated tailoring and untidy orange-red hair. A jewel-toned blazer over a patterned vest and a high-neck ruffled blouse, with cropped striped trousers or a full midi skirt. Tease the hair outward, or wear a bright curly wig, then add an oversized decorated hat. A big hat on teased hair slides, so I sew a comb into the inside of the brim. Pink and purple shadow and a berry lip. A big bow at the neck, spools of thread and paper tags tucked in the hatband, and an empty teacup. Mismatched socks are fun, but keep both boots the same heel height.
25. Queen Of Hearts Red Hair Costume

The Queen of Hearts looks royal in structured red, black and white. A red fit-and-flare dress or long gown with black panels and white trim, felt hearts along the skirt and a high white ruffled collar. A heart-shaped updo is a fun challenge on long red hair; two buns pinned close together and shaped with hairspray get you close, though a rounded bun under a small gold crown is far easier. A heart-shaped red lip and sharp liner. A playing-card fan stays together better than loose cards. Black tights, red block heels and a velvet cape for outdoors.
26. Red Hair Witch Costume

A classic witch lets natural red hair glow against black and plum. A long black dress with flowing sleeves, a plum velvet cape and a wide corset belt. Loose curls under a tall pointed hat trimmed with purple ribbon and faux berries. Tall hats tip forward, so I pin through the brim into the hair at the back. Smoky plum shadow, a clean cat-eye and a dark berry lip. Striped tights, moon earrings and a few rings. A small twig broom is the prop. Black buckled ankle boots keep you steady on the walk.
27. Autumn Fairy Red Hair Costume

An autumn fairy is about the closest match there is for copper hair. A rust chiffon dress, or a layered tulle skirt with a fitted brown or green top, with faux maple leaves clipped at the waist and neckline. Leave the hair long and wavy under a delicate leaf crown. Warm bronze shadow, peach blush and a few gold face gems. Amber wings, an acorn pouch and a small lantern with LED lights finish it. LEDs stay cool next to chiffon, which matters. Brown lace-up boots and opaque tights. It looks right outdoors in daylight among real fall leaves.
28. Fox Red Hair Costume

A fox costume turns red hair into part of the animal. A rust-orange sweater dress, or an orange sweatshirt with matching leggings, a white faux-fur chest panel and a brown belt to break up the color. A fluffy high ponytail with a padded ear headband near the crown, so the ponytail reads as part of the head. Orange blush, brown liner, freckles and a small black nose. The tail clips to the belt; I'd use a sturdy clip, because tails get grabbed. A leaf-shaped bag or woodland candy bucket. Brown ankle boots with cream cuffs. It's warm and works at any age.
29. Red Panda Costume

A red panda is a less obvious animal and very cozy. A burnt-orange hoodie or sweater with black joggers or leggings, a removable cream felt tummy panel and black gloves for paws. Two low buns sit under rounded orange-and-white ears. White eye accents, soft orange blush, a black nose and short whiskers make a friendly face, without covering it all. The big striped tail should hang from a sturdy belt, not a waistband, or it drags your pants down. Black sneakers or furry boots. A bamboo-print tote holds your candy.
30. Strawberry Red Hair Costume

Strawberry is an easy DIY that makes bright red hair part of the fruit. A red fit-and-flare or oversized T-shirt dress with small yellow felt seeds, a green felt collar and a leafy green headband over your curls. Bouncy hair looks more like part of the berry than sleek hair does. Pink blush, freckles and a glossy berry lip. A green basket or strawberry purse. Green tights or knee socks bring the leaf color down to your feet. Red sneakers or green flats. If the felt seeds are glued, they'll start dropping off by the end of the night, so stitch or pin them.
31. Flame Red Hair Costume

A flame costume makes red, copper and orange hair look deliberate. A red jumpsuit, maxi dress or long top with red trousers, with layered yellow and orange felt flames at the cuffs, shoulders and hem. Pull the hair up into a high textured ponytail or teased waves, and blend orange hair chalk through the ends if you like; it does rub onto clothes, so keep it to the tips. Gold shadow, a sharp red liner and coral lipstick. Flame earrings and an orange belt. Yellow sneakers or red boots, and reflective tape if you're outside after dark.
32. Retro Mechanic Red Hair Costume

For a last-minute idea, a retro mechanic is denim basics and red hair. Dark coveralls, or high-waisted jeans with a tucked chambray shirt, sleeves rolled and a red patch with a made-up garage name. Victory rolls or a curled ponytail under a polka-dot bandana. Tie the bandana with the knot on top and tuck the ends under, which holds better than a bow. Winged liner and a matte red lip give it the forties look. Work gloves in a back pocket and a small clean toolbox full of candy. Red canvas sneakers or work boots.
33. Red Hair Pirate Captain Costume

A pirate captain looks right with loose, windblown red curls. A white ruffled blouse under a burgundy or brown fitted vest, black trousers or a striped midi skirt, a wide sash and a long navy coat with gold trim. A soft tricorn or a patterned headscarf over the curls. Bronze eyes and a deep red lip. A compass necklace, a faux coin pouch and a rolled treasure map. Black knee boots or buckled ankle boots. Thrifted long coats with brass buttons are worth hunting for, because they look the part without any changes.
34. Red Hair Ringmaster Costume

The ringmaster is bright red hair with a red tailcoat and black basics. A tailcoat-style jacket with gold trim over a white blouse, black trousers or a skirt or shorts over opaque tights. A sleek high ponytail, or vintage curls under a mini top hat on a headband. Mini top hats sit best tilted forward and pinned on both sides. Gold shadow, black liner and a classic red lip. A black bow tie, gold shoulder cords and white gloves. Carry a program booklet or ticket roll rather than a whip. Black knee boots or loafers. The red and black stand out well in photos.
35. Red Hair Scarecrow Costume

A scarecrow is a warm, friendly way to end the season, and braided red hair suits it. Denim overalls over a plaid flannel in orange, mustard or green, with bright fabric patches safety-pinned to the knees and pockets. Two loose braids under a floppy straw hat. Orange blush, painted freckles, a small triangle nose and short stitch lines at the mouth. Real straw scratches and sheds everywhere, so I tuck raffia ribbon into the cuffs instead. A fabric sunflower or a small basket. Brown boots and thick socks for a cold October night.
Makeup Choices That Flatter Red Hair
Costume makeup often goes wrong for redheads because it treats the hair as just another color. A few habits keep the face looking intentional next to all that red.
Brows and freckles
Fill your brows in a soft brown or auburn, never black. Black brows next to red hair look painted on in every photo. For drawn freckles, use a brown brow pencil, dot it lightly and press each dot with a fingertip. Vary the size and keep them denser across the nose than on the cheeks.
Colors that sit well
Greens, golds, bronzes and plums all flatter red hair, which is why so many of these characters use them. Bright orange shadow can make red hair look washed out. If a costume asks for it, keep it to the outer corner. For lipstick, match the depth of your hair: bright cherry with a vivid red wig, brick or berry with auburn.
Skin care on the night
Fair skin often comes with red hair, and it can be sensitive. Patch-test any new costume paint or face gem glue on your inner wrist a day ahead. Set cream products with translucent powder so they don't smear onto collars and costume trim. At the end of the night, take it all off with an oil cleanser or micellar water before you sleep.
Treat the Hair as the First Costume Piece
Every idea here starts with the hair, and that's how I'd plan yours. Pick a character, animal or seasonal figure that fits your style and comfort, then decide what the hair needs: curls, braids, height or a smooth blowout. Natural red can be curled, braided, teased or pinned into almost any of these shapes, and a wig lets you try a brighter shade for one night. After that, keep the color palette tight, choose shoes you can walk in, and carry one useful prop. Closet basics and removable felt keep the cost down, and the hair stays the thing people remember.
