A good costume should be fun to plan, not a week of worry. Below are fifty looks for women: Halloween classics, film and pop characters, fantasy gowns, funny ideas and easy DIY builds. For each one I give you the full plan, from clothes and hair to makeup, accessories, prop and shoes, so you can adjust it to your style, your budget, your body and the weather where you live. Most pieces can come from your own closet, a thrift store or a craft shop. A few looks are easier with one ready-made accessory, and I say so where it helps. Spooky, sweet, glamorous or nostalgic, there's a version here you can actually wear all night.

Wearing a Character Wig So It Passes for Your Own Hair
Wednesday, Cruella, Velma, Marilyn, Dolly and Snow White are all recognized by their hair first. If you don't want to cut or dye, a wig is the answer, and a few small steps make an inexpensive one look much better.
- Wear a wig cap. Braid long hair flat or pin it in small curls first, so the wig sits close and doesn't bulge at the back.
- Pull the wig on from front to back, line its front edge up with your own hairline, and pin it through the cap at the temples and the nape.
- Trim bangs a little at a time with the wig on your head. Cut them off the head and they nearly always come out too short.
- Cheap synthetic fiber is shiny. A light dusting of dry shampoo or translucent powder takes the plastic shine down.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons and oven doors unless the label says heat-resistant, because ordinary fiber frizzes or melts.
- Most shedding settles if you shake the wig hard outdoors and comb it gently from the ends upward before the first wear.
A wig does get warm after a few hours. I'd still pick one over a rushed home dye job, which can take weeks to wash or grow out.
1. Classic Witch Costume With Black Dress

A witch is easy to make your own because the shape is so familiar. A long black dress, or a fitted black top with a flowing maxi skirt, is the base; striped tights add a playful note if you want one. Loose waves or a long black wig with real volume. I'd skip green face paint here and go for smoky gray shadow, defined brows and plum lipstick, which looks grown-up and doesn't rub off on the hat brim. A pointed hat, a small broom and a velvet cape tell the story. Lace-up boots or low block heels for comfort, plus silver rings and a moon necklace. One tip on the hat: a cheap one collapses, so I stuff the point with tissue paper before wearing it.
2. Glam Vampire Costume With Red Cape

Red velvet and sharp black pieces give you a vampire who looks dressed for a ball rather than a crypt. Wear a black midi dress, a tailored jumpsuit or a fitted top with wide-leg trousers, and layer a red-lined cape so the lining flashes when you turn. Long straight hair, glossy waves or a smooth black wig. Go light with pale foundation, then burgundy shadow, a sharp liner and dark red lipstick. Dark red lips feather and transfer, so I line them first and blot once; it saves the rim of every glass. A jeweled choker and a decorative goblet are enough accessories. Pointed flats, block heels or ankle boots. Keep the makeup stylish rather than gory and it suits an indoor party or a dressier Halloween event.
3. Black Cat Costume With Tulle Skirt

Tulle softens the black cat into something a little more party-ready. A fitted black mock-neck or long-sleeve bodysuit, a knee-length tulle skirt and opaque tights. Pick a padded ear headband over a thin plastic one; padded bands grip without pressing behind the ears, which is what gives people a headache by ten o'clock. Hair in a high ponytail, smooth waves or two little buns behind the ears. A tiny nose, fine whiskers and a subtle wing in skin-safe makeup. A ball-of-yarn prop or a bell collar adds character. Black flats, sneakers or low boots. All of it comes from basics most women already own, which is the real appeal.
4. Wednesday Addams Costume With Braided Hair

Wednesday Addams is all about the collar and the braids, and the rest is simple black. A black knee-length dress with a crisp white collar and cuffs, or a white button-down under a plain black dress, with opaque tights. Part your hair dead center and braid two long plaits; a dark braided wig is fine too. If your hair is layered, I'd braid it damp so the short ends stay tucked in. Matte foundation, soft brows, gray shadow and a muted berry lip, plus a straight face, which is half the costume. Carry an old hardcover or a small cello-shaped accessory. Loafers, Mary Janes or lace-up boots. It's comfortable and comes together at the last minute.
5. Glinda Costume With Pink Ball Gown

A sparkling pink gown is what makes Glinda. Look for a blush, bubblegum or pastel pink maxi with tulle, organza or tiers of ruffles; a full skirt gives the truest shape, though a simpler formal dress still works. Soft blonde curls or a curled light-blonde wig with a center part. Rosy blush, luminous shadow, pink lipstick and a light dusting of cosmetic shimmer. The tall silver crown and the star wand are the signatures. I make the wand from a dowel and a cardboard star covered in glitter paper, then seal the glitter with clear spray, or it ends up on everyone you hug. Silver flats or low glitter heels under the skirt, and keep every accessory light.
6. Elphaba Costume With Green Makeup

Green skin is the whole point of Elphaba, so plan the makeup first. Use water-based green face and body makeup and build it in thin layers with a damp sponge; one thick coat cracks once you start talking and laughing. Set it with translucent powder, and patch-test on your wrist the day before. Then the clothing: a high-neck black maxi, a structured black jacket, or a layered skirt with a fitted long-sleeve top, with lace, velvet or pleated cotton for texture. Dark brows, smoky eyes and a black-plum lip. Long black waves or a center-parted wig, a tall pointed hat, a small broom and a black bag that looks like a spellbook case. Lace-up boots are steadier than narrow heels.
7. Barbie Cowgirl Costume With Pink Flares

Pink, white and silver are the only colors this cowgirl needs, and keeping to them is what makes her read. A pink vest, a white fitted top and pink flared pants with silver stars or simple felt accents; a pink denim jumpsuit is the easier route. Long blonde waves or a smooth blonde wig under a white cowgirl hat. Fresh pink blush, gloss, mascara and pastel shadow for the doll finish. A rhinestone belt, star earrings and a small pink bandana. White Western boots are ideal, though comfortable ankle boots are fine. I'd cut the stars from glitter felt rather than iron-on vinyl, since vinyl can scorch flared polyester if the iron runs hot.
8. Disco Queen Costume With Sequin Jumpsuit

A sequin jumpsuit gets you to disco queen with almost no effort. Look for silver, gold, purple or rainbow sequins with wide legs and a defined waist, or wear a metallic blouse with flared trousers if one-pieces bother you. Bathroom breaks in a jumpsuit are the honest downside, and I always mention it. Big curls, brushed-out waves or a full natural style. Sparkle shadow, gloss, bright blush and small cosmetic gems at the outer corners of the eyes. A mini mirror-ball purse or a light microphone prop. Platforms suit the era; choose a stable block heel or a platform sneaker. Oversized hoops and tinted glasses finish it, and the sequins look great under a camera flash.
9. 1980s Aerobics Costume With Neon Leggings

This is the costume to pick if your Halloween involves dancing, walking or a fun run. Bright leggings under a contrasting leotard or a belted oversized T-shirt, scrunched leg warmers, wristbands and a wide fabric headband. A high side ponytail, teased for volume, or a curly ponytail extension clipped on. Bold blue or purple shadow, pink blush and gloss. A small foam weight or a light water bottle as the prop. White high-tops for comfort. Large plastic earrings and a belt bag finish it and hold your phone and keys. I'd choose a soft terry headband over a tight elastic one, which starts to squeeze after a few hours.
10. 1920s Flapper Costume With Fringe Dress

Movement is what a flapper costume is for. Choose a knee-length fringe or beaded dress in black, gold, emerald or burgundy, and lay a light faux-fur wrap over the shoulders. Short hair can go into finger waves; longer hair tucks into a faux bob pinned under at the nape, or wear a sleek waved wig. Softly smoky eyes, defined brows, rosy cheeks and a deep berry lip. A jeweled headband, a long faux-pearl strand and a small feather fan. T-straps, low Mary Janes or comfortable dance heels, and a compact beaded purse. Beaded dresses are heavy and the weight hangs from the shoulder straps, so I check those seams and add a few stitches before a night of dancing.
11. 1950s Poodle Skirt Costume With Cardigan

A full skirt and a fitted cardigan make a 1950s costume that suits a party, a school event or a community night. Wear a poodle skirt or a plain circle skirt over a simple white blouse, then a cropped pastel cardigan, a narrow neck scarf and a slim belt. A circle skirt needs a petticoat to stand out properly; without one it hangs flat and looks like an ordinary skirt. A high ponytail with a ribbon, or soft shoulder-length curls. Black liner, peach blush and red or pink lipstick. A miniature record or a vintage-style handbag. White ankle socks with saddle shoes, or loafers and clean sneakers. Small pearl earrings, and you're done.
12. 1960s Mod Costume With Mini Dress

Graphic print does almost all the work in a mod costume. Choose an A-line mini in black and white, orange, yellow or a big geometric pattern, with opaque tights and a cropped jacket if you want coverage or warmth. A smooth bob wig, flipped ends on shoulder-length hair, or a wide matching headband. Pale shadow, heavy lashes, precise liner and a nude-pink lip; the lashes matter more than anything else on the face here. Round oversized sunglasses and plastic hoops, plus a small structured handbag. White knee-high boots, low block heels or flat Mary Janes. The clean outline is what people recognize from across a room, so I wouldn't clutter it with props.
13. 1970s Hippie Costume With Bell-Bottom Jeans

Thrifted 1970s pieces are a smart buy because you'll wear them again. High-rise bell-bottoms with a floral blouse, a crochet vest or a fringed suede-look jacket. A wide printed headband across long natural waves, or a center-parted brown wig. Warm shadow, peach blush and a natural gloss, nothing heavy. Layer a few beaded necklaces and carry a small flower-covered sign with a friendly peace message. Platform clogs, brown ankle boots or sandals, depending on the weather, and round tinted glasses. Check the bell-bottom length with your shoes on; flares hemmed for flats drag in the dirt. I'd also steer clear of cultural or religious garments and stick to mainstream vintage fashion, florals and decade accessories.
14. Rosie The Riveter Costume With Denim Shirt

Rosie the Riveter is one of my favorite last-minute costumes because it's almost all closet. Tuck a denim or chambray shirt into high-waisted dark jeans or navy work pants and roll the sleeves above the elbow. Add a brown utility belt if you have one. The red polka-dot scarf is the signature: fold it into a long band, tie it over a curled updo, bun or ponytail and leave the knot on top. Defined brows, mascara, rosy blush and a matte red lip. A metal lunchbox or a rolled blueprint for the prop. Work boots, sturdy sneakers or low oxfords. Everything adjusts easily, which makes it good for a work event or a long celebration.
15. Greek Goddess Costume With White Draped Dress

White drape and gold accents are all a goddess needs. Choose a white maxi with a gathered waist, or drape a clean white sheet over a slip dress and fix it at the shoulders. On a sheet, I use safety pins hidden under a gold brooch, plus a strip of double-sided fashion tape inside the neckline so it stays put when you reach for a drink. A metallic gold belt shapes the waist. Loose curls, a braided crown or a textured low updo. Gold shadow, warm blush, highlighted cheekbones and a neutral lip. A gold leaf headband, stacked cuffs, and a scroll or small decorative urn. Gold flat sandals, and a hem that clears the floor so you aren't treading on the drape.
16. Medusa Costume With Green Draped Dress

Medusa looks dramatic but can stay wearable for hours. Start with an emerald, olive or black draped maxi and a gold belt at the waist. Put your hair in a textured updo, then weave soft rubber snakes or green braided cord through it; a ready-made snake headband is the quicker way. Rubber snakes are heavier than they look, so I anchor each one with a bobby pin through its middle as well as at the end. Metallic green shadow, winged liner, contoured cheeks and a deep nude lip, with a faint scale pattern at the temples pressed through fishnet. Gold cuffs and a mirrored compact as accessories. Metallic sandals or low black boots.
17. Fairy Costume With Green Tulle Dress

A woodland fairy is mostly softness and a few natural details. A sage green dress, or a fitted top with a layered green tulle skirt, plus nude or green tights for warmth. Loose waves with a few small braids, woven with artificial leaves or tiny flowers. Soft green shadow, rosy cheeks, gloss and a biodegradable cosmetic shimmer. Translucent wings should attach firmly at the shoulders and stay narrow enough for crowded rooms. I sew elastic loops under the wing base and wear them like a backpack, which holds far better than clips on a dress strap. A flower wand or a small lantern-style prop. Flats, lace-up sandals or low boots, with a leafy headband and fine gold jewelry.
18. Butterfly Costume With Colorful Wings

Big patterned wings are the butterfly, so the clothes stay plain and dark. A fitted black jumpsuit, a long-sleeve dress, or a black top and leggings. Wings in monarch orange, vivid blue, lavender or rainbow. A high bun or sleek ponytail with a curved antenna headband. Blend shadow to match the wings, then add dotted liner, rosy blush and a gloss. Flower clips or a floral wrist corsage. Black flats, sneakers or ankle boots. If you're driving to the party, pick foldable wings; rigid ones don't fit behind a seatbelt and get bent on the way. Foldable wings are also kinder when you sit down or move through a busy room.
19. Bumblebee Costume With Striped Dress

Yellow and black stripes read as a bee with very little help. A striped sweater dress is the simplest version; otherwise a black fitted top, a yellow tulle skirt and black tights. Two small buns, a high ponytail or soft curls under an antenna headband. Yellow shadow, clean black liner, peach blush and a natural lip. Light sheer wings, and a small flowerpot or fabric daisy to carry. Black ankle boots, flats or sneakers. A narrow yellow belt pulls mismatched separates together at the waist. I'd test the antennae by leaning in for a hug; if they poke anyone near the eyes, swap them for a softer pair.
20. Ladybug Costume With Red Polka-Dot Dress

Ladybug is cheerful and fits almost any setting. A red dress with black dots works, or a plain red skater dress with removable black felt circles. I attach the felt with fabric-safe tape so the dress can go back into regular rotation afterward. Black tights, and a fitted cardigan if it's cool. A smooth ponytail, loose curls or two neat buns under a black antenna headband. Red lipstick, defined lashes and a few small black dots at the outer corners of the eyes. Rounded red wings, and a leafy green clutch or an oversized fabric flower. Black Mary Janes, flats or ankle boots.
21. Mermaid Costume With Sequin Maxi Skirt

Ocean colors give you the mermaid without a restrictive tail. A purple, aqua or pearl-toned top with a high-waisted sequin maxi skirt that flares near the hem. Long beach waves, or a teal, lavender or pastel ombré wig. Blue and purple shadow, pearly highlighter and a light scale pattern at the temples through fishnet fabric. A shell headband, layered pearls and a seashell purse. Flat sandals or low metallic shoes hidden under the skirt. Sequin waistbands scratch, so I'd line the inside with a strip of soft fabric if the skirt sits on bare skin. And skip any hem too narrow to walk in safely.
22. Pirate Costume With Striped Blouse

Layered thrift pieces make a better pirate than a bagged set. A loose white or striped blouse tucked into black pants or a burgundy midi skirt, then a fitted vest, a wide belt and a striped scarf knotted at the waist. Tousled waves, loose braids or a dark curly wig under a soft tricorn-style hat. Smoky brown eyes, defined brows, warm blush and a berry lip. Gold hoops, a rolled treasure map and a small coin pouch are safe finishing details. Brown knee-high or lace-up ankle boots with a stable sole. If the fabrics look too new, I rub the vest edges with fine sandpaper and dab on a little cold tea; it ages them fast.
23. Sailor Costume With Navy Dress

Navy and white give a sailor a crisp, tidy look. A navy fit-and-flare dress with white trim, or wide-leg navy trousers with a striped boat-neck top, and a red neck scarf for contrast. A neat ponytail, soft vintage curls or a low bun under a small sailor cap. Winged liner, rosy blush and red lipstick. A coiled decorative rope, an anchor-shaped purse or a cardboard ship wheel. White sneakers, navy flats or low red heels. Gold buttons and small anchor earrings strengthen the theme. Sailor caps slide off a smooth bun, so I pin mine through a small elastic loop sewn inside the band.
24. Red Riding Hood Costume With Hooded Cape

The hooded red cape is the costume; everything else supports it. Wear it over a white blouse and a black or red midi skirt, or over a simple gingham dress with a fitted waist. Opaque tights if it's cold. Soft curls, two loose braids, or your natural hair tucked under the hood. Fresh makeup: rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a berry-red lip. A small wicker basket lined with red-and-white fabric and filled with artificial flowers. Brown lace-up boots, black Mary Janes or ankle boots. Pick a cape that ends above the ankles. I also add a hook and eye at the neck instead of relying on ties, which slip and let the cape pull at your throat from behind.
25. Snow White Costume With Blue Bodice

Snow White is primary color blocking: blue on top, yellow below, red accents. A blue fitted top or bodice with short puff sleeves and a flowing yellow midi or maxi skirt. A small white collar and a red capelet add detail. A smooth black bob, curled ends on shoulder-length hair, or a short black wig, with a red bow headband at the crown. Rosy cheeks, softly lined eyes and a bright red lip. A polished artificial apple or a little woven basket. Red flats or low Mary Janes. If you can't find a bodice, I'd add puff sleeves to a blue T-shirt; a gathered strip of fabric stitched at each shoulder is enough. Keep the skirt light enough to layer under.
26. Cinderella Costume With Blue Ball Gown

A pale blue formal dress is the right base for Cinderella. A full-length gown, a tulle midi, or a blue top with a flowing skirt; add sheer puff sleeves or a light blue shawl if it's sleeveless. A high polished bun with a sparkling headband just behind the hairline. Icy blue shadow, luminous foundation, pink blush and a soft gloss. A black velvet choker and a small silver clutch are the details people notice. Carry a clear decorative slipper or a miniature clock. Silver flats are safer than clear plastic heels, which pinch and slip. Long gloves look elegant, but I'd pick a stretchy pair, since stiff satin gloves make it hard to hold anything.
27. Belle Costume With Yellow Gown

Warm gold fabric is what makes Belle. Start with a yellow off-the-shoulder gown, or a fitted yellow top with a tiered maxi skirt for the budget version. Gather sections of the skirt with fabric-safe clips to suggest the draped ball-gown shape. Brown hair in a curled half-up style with soft pieces at the face. Warm neutral shadow, peach blush and a rosy lip. Gold drop earrings, long gloves and a small artificial rose under a light clear cover. Yellow or gold flats, or low block heels, hidden under the skirt. Off-the-shoulder necklines slide down as you move, so I'd add clear silicone straps or a strip of fashion tape at the top edge.
28. Alice Costume With Blue Pinafore Dress

A blue pinafore and a crisp white apron read as Alice straight away. A knee-length blue dress with short sleeves under a white apron, and white tights or knee socks depending on the weather. Loose blonde waves, or a shoulder-length blonde wig with a black ribbon headband. Light blue shadow, pink blush, mascara and a natural rose lip. A teacup, a playing-card clutch or a plush white rabbit. Black Mary Janes are the familiar finish, though flats work too. A soft petticoat gives the storybook fullness. I iron the apron with a little starch so it stays crisp; a limp apron is the first thing that makes this costume look tired.
29. Queen Of Hearts Costume With Red Skirt

Red, black, white and gold give the Queen of Hearts drama without a complicated gown. A fitted black top over a full red skirt, with removable felt hearts around the hem, a white ruffled collar and a gold waist belt. A high heart-shaped updo, big curls or a red-and-black wig. Dramatic winged liner, red shadow, defined brows and lipstick drawn into a heart shape. A gold crown, a heart-covered fan and a card-shaped clutch. Black tights with red ankle boots or stable block heels. I'd make the collar from soft tulle rather than stiff interfacing, because a stiff collar scratches the jaw every time you turn your head.
30. Tinker Bell Costume With Green Mini Dress

A bright green dress is the base for Tinker Bell. A sleeveless skater dress, or a green top with a petal-shaped skirt, with nude tights. Blonde hair in a high bun with a light ribbon, or a blonde bun wig. Luminous foundation, green-gold shadow, peach blush and a glossy pink lip. Small translucent wings, a pom-pom on each shoe and a star wand from light craft materials. Green flats or low slip-ons, and a tiny belt pouch for essentials. For the petal hem, I cut points into a felt overskirt; felt doesn't fray, so the edges need no finishing. Keep the wings compact for crowded or seated rooms.
31. Maleficent Costume With Black Cape

Maleficent is all silhouette, so the horns have to be right. Wear a long black dress, a high-neck jumpsuit or a fitted top with a sweeping maxi skirt, under a structured black or deep purple cape. The curved horn headpiece sits over your hair, held with hidden pins. Horns get heavy at the front, so I add a thin elastic strap under the back of the hair to stop them tipping forward. Sculpted brows, purple-gray shadow, defined cheekbones and a deep berry lip. A tall staff from light foam or cardboard with smooth rounded edges, and a large dark ring. Pointed flats or sturdy ankle boots, and a cape cut just above the floor so you don't trip.
32. Cruella Costume With Half-Black Half-White Hair

The half-black, half-white hair is the clue everyone reads first, so I'd spend on the wig before anything else. A fitted black dress, or tailored black trousers with a white blouse, plus a spotted faux-fur coat or scarf. A short curled or voluminous wig split down the middle. Sharp brows, smoky eyes, matte red lips and lightly contoured cheeks. Long red gloves, oversized costume jewelry and a structured black-and-white bag. Red pumps, pointed flats or sleek ankle boots, depending on your comfort. Keep every spot and print decorative and skip real fur. With the hair and the red accents in place, the rest can be everyday clothes.
33. Harley Quinn Costume With Red And Blue Jacket

This red-and-blue look stays playful and needs no risky props. A red-and-blue bomber over a white T-shirt with shorts, leggings or a pleated skirt, and patterned tights for extra detail. High blonde pigtails with the ends tinted in washable pink and blue. Temporary hair color rubs onto pale collars and pillowcases, so I put it on dry hair, let it set, then brush out the excess before dressing. Matching shadow on each side, a small drawn heart on one cheek, rosy blush and red lipstick. A studded choker and a slogan bracelet. Red-and-blue high-tops or lace-up ankle boots. Carry a small jester-themed purse instead of anything bulky or unsuitable for public places.
34. Velma Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma is a cozy closet costume and very easy to spot. An oversized orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt and orange or brown knee socks. A short brown bob wig is the quickest hair, though short hair can be smoothed and curled under. Large square black glasses with clear lenses are non-negotiable. Warm neutral shadow, soft blush and a muted pink lip. A magnifying glass, a small notebook or a stack of mystery books. Red Mary Janes, loafers or flats. A wool turtleneck gets hot fast indoors, so I'd pick a thin cotton knit for a party, and wear fitted shorts under the skirt so you can move freely all evening.
35. Daphne Costume With Purple Dress

A purple dress and a green scarf make Daphne with very little effort. Choose a long-sleeve mini or midi in violet or lavender and add a pale green neck scarf. Pink tights give the familiar contrast, while neutral tights are easier to wear. Red or auburn hair in smooth volume with a purple headband, or a long red wig. Soft lavender shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and pink lipstick. A small magnifying glass or a retro purple handbag. Purple block heels, pink flats or ankle boots. The scarf slips, so I tie it once around the neck and slide a small safety pin through the knot from behind. Keep the dress at a length you can sit and walk in.
36. Cher Horowitz Costume With Yellow Plaid Set

Matching yellow plaid is Cher Horowitz's signature, and the set is what people spot. A cropped plaid jacket with a matching pleated skirt over a white fitted tee or sweater, and white knee socks. Blonde hair straight with soft curved ends, or a long smooth blonde wig. Neutral shadow, mascara, peach blush and glossy pink lips, very 1990s. A mini backpack, a fuzzy pen or a small flip-phone prop. White Mary Janes, loafers or low block heels. If you can't find a matched set, a yellow cardigan with a plaid skirt works, and I'd repeat black accents in the accessories so the pieces look related.
37. Elle Woods Costume With Pink Suit

Pink from head to toe is the whole idea behind this law-school heroine, and it's easy to spot. A pink skirt suit, a fitted blazer with matching trousers, or a pink dress under a cropped jacket. A smooth blowout, polished curls or a high ponytail. Fresh foundation, defined lashes, rosy blush and a glossy pink lip. Pearl earrings, pink sunglasses and a structured handbag. Carry a thick law book or a pink folder rather than anything fussy. Pink pumps, nude block heels or clean white sneakers, depending on the event. Different pinks fight each other in photos, so I hold the pieces together in daylight before committing. A small plush dog peeking out of the bag is the final wink.
38. Audrey Hepburn Costume With Black Dress

A little black dress is the heart of this Audrey Hepburn look, and it suits a dressier party. A sleeveless midi with a fitted waist and long black gloves. A high polished updo with a small jeweled comb or a miniature tiara. I back-comb the crown a little before pinning it up, because a flat updo won't hold the height this look needs. Classic winged liner, softly defined brows, peach blush and a rosy neutral lip. Several strands of faux pearls, and either a long costume cigarette holder with no cigarette or simply a small black clutch. Black pointed flats or low kitten heels, plus oversized sunglasses if you like. Keep every piece sleek.
39. Marilyn Monroe Costume With White Halter Dress

The white halter dress and set curls carry this Marilyn Monroe look. Choose a knee-length or midi halter with a pleated, softly flared skirt, and make sure the neck tie is comfortable. Halters pull on the neck over a long night, so I tie mine a little looser and add a hidden hook at the back. Short blonde hair set in structured curls, or a curled platinum wig with a side part. Precise liner, full lashes, arched brows, luminous foundation and classic red lipstick. Crystal studs, a sparkling bracelet and a small white clutch rather than a prop. Nude or white low heels, or flats for comfort, and a light petticoat if you want more volume.
40. Dolly Parton Costume With Sequin Jumpsuit

Sparkle and big hair are Dolly Parton's look, done with good humor. A rhinestone-trimmed jumpsuit, a bright Western shirt with flared pants, or a sequined midi dress, plus a decorative belt and a fringed jacket for movement. Tease a blonde wig into high curls and secure it well; a tall wig is front-heavy, so I use a wig cap and four or five pins around the crown. Shimmer shadow, defined lashes, pink blush and glossy rose lips. Big earrings, a toy acoustic guitar and a rhinestone microphone purse. White Western boots or glitter ankle boots. Keep the embellishment light so you can walk, dance and pose comfortably.
41. Lady Gaga Costume With Silver Bodysuit

A futuristic silver outfit nods to Lady Gaga without copying one stage look. A metallic jumpsuit, or a structured silver top over opaque leggings. Add a sculptural shoulder piece from craft foam if you like DIY; thin foam softens under a heat gun or even a hair dryer and can be curved over a bowl, then painted silver once it cools. Platinum hair in a blunt bob, a high ponytail or a big bow-shaped updo. Silver shadow, graphic black liner, highlighter and a pale pink lip. Oversized geometric sunglasses and a glitter microphone. Silver platform sneakers or metallic ankle boots. Keep sculptural pieces bendy and rounded for crowds; a single silver palette makes even a simple version look planned.
42. Taylor Swift Eras Costume With Sequin Dress

A sequin dress is an easy start for a Taylor Swift concert look. A glittering mini or midi in silver, lavender, blue or multicolor, with a soft faux-fur jacket if it's cold. Loose curls, a high ponytail or straight hair with bangs. Sparkle shadow, sharp black liner, rosy blush and a red lip. Friendship bracelets, a rhinestone microphone and a small star bag. Glitter ankle boots, low Western boots or metallic sneakers. I'd pick an era by its color and build from there, instead of hunting for an exact stage outfit. Loose sequins catch on bracelets, so dab any loose thread ends with clear nail polish before you go.
43. Sabrina Carpenter Costume With Heart Dress

A heart-trimmed mini dress gives you a pop-star look in Sabrina Carpenter's style. A pastel, silver or pale blue fitted dress with removable heart appliqués on the bodice or skirt, sheer tights, and a soft wrap for warmth. Long blonde curls with curtain bangs, or a curled blonde wig; clip-in bangs let you try the fringe without cutting. Shimmer shadow, strong lashes, bright blush and a glossy nude-pink lip. A rhinestone microphone and a delicate initial necklace. White platform boots or low block-heel ankle boots. Short fitted dresses ride up and shift, so I use fashion tape at the hem and neckline wherever it's needed.
44. Cowgirl Costume With Denim And Fringe

A cowgirl uses Western pieces you'll happily wear again. High-rise jeans or a denim skirt with a plaid shirt, a fitted tank or an embroidered Western blouse. A suede-look fringed vest on top and a statement belt. Loose waves, a side braid or two low braids under a felt hat. Bronze shadow, rosy blush, mascara and a neutral gloss. A bandana, a decorative rope loop and a small saddle-style crossbody. Brown or white Western boots. New boots rub at the heel, so I'd wear them around the house for an evening first. Soft, light fringe moves without tangling, and the layers make this a good pick for outdoor plans where the weather can turn.
45. Ringmaster Costume With Red Tailcoat

A fitted red tailcoat gives the ringmaster a sharp, theatrical outline. Wear it over a white ruffled blouse with black high-waisted trousers or a knee-length black skirt, and add a gold-trimmed vest or wide belt. Sleek waves, a high ponytail or a smooth bun under a mini top hat. Gold shadow, defined liner, warm blush and bold red lipstick. A small ticket roll, a decorative hoop or a striped presentation card. Black knee-high boots, ankle boots or low block heels. Gold epaulets and buttons add impact; I'd sew on plastic buttons rather than metal ones, which drag a light jacket out of shape. A mini top hat stays put on a comb clip.
46. Mime Costume With Striped Shirt

A mime is a cheap, simple DIY from black-and-white clothes. A striped long-sleeve shirt, black high-waisted pants, suspenders and white gloves, with a red scarf at the neck for one accent. Hair under a black beret, in a low bun, or a short dark bob wig. White face makeup goes on lightly, then thin black brows, precise liner, rosy circles on the cheeks and a red lip. I'd use a white cream base set with plenty of powder, since white shows every smudge and transfers onto the collar first. A small empty picture frame makes a good prop for playful poses. Black flats, loafers or lace-ups, and stretch trousers so you can mime freely.
47. Scarecrow Costume With Plaid Shirt

Patchwork turns casual fall clothes into a friendly scarecrow. A plaid flannel with denim overalls or relaxed jeans, and removable fabric patches at the knees and pockets. A rope-style belt, and straw-colored fringe at the cuffs if you want it. Two braids, low pigtails or loose waves under a floppy brown hat. Warm orange shadow, peach blush, a painted triangle nose and short stitch lines near the mouth. A bundle of artificial sunflowers or a fabric crow. Brown work boots or lace-up ankle boots. Real straw sheds and scratches, so I use raffia or yellow yarn at the cuffs and keep it well away from the face.
48. Skeleton Costume With Black Jumpsuit

A printed skeleton is graphic and easy to wear without being frightening. A black jumpsuit, a matching top and leggings, or a long black dress printed with clean white bones. A high ponytail, sleek bun or straight black wig keeps the print visible. White and gray makeup for softly hollowed eyes, a pale nose detail and neat lines around the lips, stylized rather than realistic. Gray blended with a fluffy brush gives soft hollows; a hard edge looks drawn on. Bone-print gloves and a small black lantern. Combat boots, high-tops or ballet flats. Reflective bone decals help if you'll be walking outside after dark.
49. Fortune Teller Costume With Velvet Skirt

A fortune teller is jewel tones and layers of jewelry, styled as fantasy rather than any real culture. A jewel-toned peasant blouse with a long velvet skirt and an embroidered vest, a decorative sash at the waist and a fringed shawl. Long curls or a loose side braid with small metallic clips. Purple shadow, glowing highlighter, defined brows and a berry lip. Costume necklaces and bangles, plus a light crystal-ball ornament or a deck of illustrated fantasy cards. Black lace-up boots or dark flats. A wrist full of bangles gets loud and heavy, so I wear them on one arm only. Keep away from sacred symbols, religious garments or dress tied to a specific community.
50. Retro Space Girl Costume With Silver Dress

Retro space girl mixes shine with 1960s shapes. A silver A-line mini, a metallic jumpsuit, or a white fitted top with a reflective pleated skirt. Opaque tights and a cropped vinyl-look jacket for coverage. A sleek high ponytail, a smooth bob or a pastel silver wig with curved ends. Icy shadow, graphic liner, pearly highlighter and a glossy lavender lip. A clear bubble headband, metallic cuffs and a cardboard control-panel purse. White knee-highs or silver platform sneakers. Metallic and vinyl fabrics don't breathe, so I'd leave the jacket off at a warm indoor party. A little blue or purple adds depth without spoiling the silver-and-white palette.
Elphaba Green, Mime White and Red Lips That Last
Several looks here lean on makeup: full green for Elphaba, a white base for the mime and the skeleton, a heart-shaped lip for the Queen of Hearts. I'm a stylist, not a special effects artist, but ordinary makeup habits keep these looks on your face and off your collar.
Putting it on
Patch-test any face paint on the inside of your wrist a day ahead. Start from clean, moisturized skin, then build water-based paint in thin layers with a damp sponge, letting each one dry. Press translucent setting powder over the top and finish with a setting spray if you have one. Bold lips go on over a liner and get blotted once, so they don't feather or print onto every glass.
Taking it off
Use an oil cleanser or a gentle makeup remover first, then wash with your usual face wash. Green and white pigment hides along the hairline and behind the ears, so check there before bed. On fabric, work a little dish soap into any transfer before it dries.
Toning a Character Down for the Office
A work party or a school dress-up day usually comes with rules about masks, props and how much makeup is fine. The trick is to keep the one detail that identifies the character and drop the rest.
- Wednesday, Velma, Rosie and Cher work almost as they are, because the clothes are everyday pieces.
- For Elphaba, swap full green skin for green eyeshadow and a green lip, and keep the black dress and the hat.
- For Maleficent or Medusa, wear the horns or snakes only for photos and keep a plain black or green outfit for the rest of the day.
- Leave out anything shaped like a weapon, and pick shoes you can stand in for a full working day.
Hair, Color and One Prop Carry Every Character Here
Look back through the list and almost every character rests on three things: the right hair, a clear color story and one prop. Get those right and the clothes can come from your closet, a thrift store or a few removable craft details. Before the party, wear the makeup for an hour, walk in the shoes, and shake your head to see whether the cape, wings, wig or headpiece stays put. Bring a matching layer if it's cold. And don't chase an exact copy. A version that suits your face and your evening reads better than a stiff imitation.
