A skeleton dress does half the costume for you: the bones are already printed, so what's left is styling. The 35 dresses below run from plain black and white to gold, velvet, a 1950s swing skirt and a celestial maxi. For each I've noted which tights, shoes and hair suit it, and how much face makeup it really wants, which is often less than you'd think. Some of these suit a school event or the office, and a few are better kept for a dark party. Before the list there's a short section on buying a printed dress that actually fits your bones, and after it, notes on layering for cold nights and washing the dress so it lasts.

Where the Ribs Land When You Buy a Printed Dress
Most skeleton dresses are cut for one body shape, and the print doesn't move when your body is different. On a tall person the rib cage can sit up near the collarbones; on a petite one the pelvis prints halfway down the thighs. Neither looks like a skeleton any more. So when I'm buying online, I read the size chart for the length from shoulder to waist and compare it with my own measurement, not just the bust size.
- The bottom rib should end roughly at your natural waist, a little above the belly button.
- The pelvis print belongs over your hip bones, not across the tops of your thighs.
- On stretch jersey, a print stretched more than a size looks thin and greyish because the black base shows through the white ink.
- Screen-printed bones look crisp but can crack over time; sublimation prints on polyester last longer but can look a little blurred at the edges.
- Leave the tags on and try the dress with the tights and shoes you'll wear, then sit down in it, before you decide to keep it.
If the print lands in the wrong place, a belt or tights rarely fixes it. It's usually better to swap sizes or pick a different cut. A dress with bones only on the bodice, like several of the lace and velvet styles below, is much more forgiving than a full-length print.
1. Classic Black And White Skeleton Dress Costume

Start here if you've never worn a skeleton before. A knee-length black dress with a white rib cage and leg-bone print, opaque black tights and lace-up ankle boots is all it takes. Opaque tights matter more than people expect; with bare legs, the leg bones on the skirt just stop at the hem and look unfinished. Straight hair or a short black bob wig keeps the line sharp. For the face, white around the eyes, nose and cheekbones, black shadow blended into the sockets, and short vertical lines across bare lips are enough to read as a skull. Carry a small bone-shaped bag or a few white roses.
2. Glow In The Dark Skeleton Dress Costume

Glow prints keep getting better as the light drops, which is why I like them for trick-or-treating. Look for a black dress with glow bones on the bodice, arms and skirt; a long-sleeve skater shape gives you warmth and room to walk. Add black leggings and platform sneakers with reflective laces. A high ponytail with a few pale green extensions picks up the glow. Keep the face light, with white liner, soft grey shading and a touch of cosmetic glow product at the temples. Leave the dress under a bright lamp before you go out. The glow is strongest in the first hour and fades from there, so a small battery fairy light in a clear bag is a good backup.
3. Sequin Skeleton Dress Costume

Sequin bones turn the skeleton into a party dress. A fitted black midi with silver sequin ribs, vertebrae and hip bones, sheer black tights and silver block heels you can dance in make the base. Sequins scratch the inside of your arms when you move, so if the sleeves are close to the body, check the lining before you buy. A sleek low bun with a few rhinestone pins suits the shine. On the face, I'd concentrate on the eyes and mouth: silver shadow, black liner, grey cheekbones and a metallic lip, leaving the rest of the skin alone. Crystal drops and a small mirrored clutch are enough.
4. Gothic Lace Skeleton Dress Costume

Lace makes a skeleton romantic instead of frightening. Wear a long-sleeve black lace dress over a fitted bone-print slip so the bones show through the sheer sleeves and bodice. The slip has to be close-fitting; if it's loose, the bones wander under the lace and lose their shape. Patterned black tights and low-heeled Victorian-style boots suit it. Loose dark waves or a long wavy black wig with a centre part frame a pale face with smoky charcoal eyes and soft lines along the cheekbones. A black rose headband, a cameo choker and lace gloves add to the mood. A small velvet drawstring bag is enough to carry.
5. Victorian Skeleton Dress Costume

The Victorian dress gets its drama from shape: high neck, puffed shoulders, fitted cuffs and a full skirt to the floor. White bone appliqués over the torso and arms keep it a skeleton. Add a white ruffled collar, black gloves and buttoned ankle boots under the hem. A low twisted bun with a few soft curls around the face suits the period. Pale makeup, grey contour and fine black lines around the lips are plenty, because the dress already carries the look. If you're adding appliqués yourself, stitch them through the dress with a few hand stitches at each end rather than relying on iron-on glue, which tends to peel at the shoulders. A brooch and a small fan printed with bones finish it.
6. Skeleton Bride Dress Costume

This bride is soft and faded rather than white and bright. Start with an ivory or pale grey maxi dress with black bone artwork on the bodice, then add a short tulle veil on a comb of white and charcoal fabric roses. Silver ballet flats or low block heels match the colours. Loose curls, a braided updo or a wavy silver wig sit under the veil. For the face, pearly eye shadow, cool grey contour and precise black lines around the lips. Lace gloves and a bouquet of white faux flowers in black ribbon finish it. If you'll be outdoors, hold the hem at ankle length; ivory fabric picks up every bit of wet pavement.
7. Pastel Skeleton Dress Costume

Pastel skeletons suit daytime events and anyone who'd rather be sweet than scary. Choose a lavender, mint or powder-blue skater dress with white bones, white tights and pastel sneakers or Mary Janes. A short wig in a matching shade makes the colours look planned, though soft curls in your own hair are fine too. On the face, pearly white accents, lilac shadow, rosy blush and thin grey bone lines. White bones on mint or powder blue can be faint, so check the print under normal room light before you commit. Star clips, a heart-shaped bag and a few beaded bracelets are enough.
8. Pink Skeleton Dress Costume

Hot pink with black bones is loud in the best way. Pick a hot-pink mini or knee-length dress, then calm it with black tights and chunky combat boots. A high ponytail tied with black velvet ribbon gives a neat outline; pink clip-in streaks add more colour if you want it. Black winged liner, pink shadow and a little skeletal contour on the nose and cheeks suit it, with black lipstick and fine white teeth marks to match the print. Black lipstick is the trickiest part here: line the lips first, fill, blot, and fill again, or it wears patchy in the middle. Fingerless gloves, a black mini backpack and bone earrings round it off.
9. Rainbow Skeleton Dress Costume

A rainbow print stands out most in bright rooms. Choose a black fit-and-flare dress with multicoloured bones, where each section of the skeleton is clearly separate rather than blending into the next. Black leggings and white high-tops with rainbow laces keep it comfortable. Two buns with colourful extensions or ribbon strands suit it. For makeup, a different shadow colour around each eye, and white on the nose and mouth instead of a full white face. Rainbow studs and a clear bag finish it. With this much print, I'd stop adding accessories early.
10. Neon Skeleton Dress Costume

Neon prints come alive under party lights and look a little flat in daylight, so this is a dance-night dress. Choose a fitted black dress with fluorescent bones, wear black bike shorts underneath if it's short, and add black platform sneakers with neon socks. A sleek ponytail with a few removable neon strands repeats the print. Bright liner, matte black shadow and white touches on the nose and lips make a graphic face. Only add a belt if it sits below the ribs; a belt across the rib cage cuts the skeleton in half. Glow bracelets and a black belt bag are enough, and anything bright on the face should be a cosmetic product, never craft paint.
11. Red And Black Skeleton Dress Costume

Red and black is the grown-up skeleton. Pick a black midi with dark red bones, or the reverse, a red dress with black ribs and vertebrae. Sheer black tights and pointed ankle boots keep the line long. Soft waves, a low ponytail or a shoulder-length black wig sit quietly with it. Blend burgundy shadow around the eyes, define the nose in black, and wear a deep red lip with fine bone lines drawn over it. Red lipstick bleeds into the fine lines, so draw them with a sharp black liner pencil after the lipstick has set. A velvet choker, red stone earrings, black gloves and a rose-shaped bag or a few red fabric flowers finish it.
12. Silver Metallic Skeleton Dress Costume

Metallic bones look modern and a little space-age. A black shift or bodycon dress with reflective silver ribs and joints is the base. If the print stops above the knee, silver leggings underneath carry the shine down to your feet. Metallic ankle boots or black boots with silver laces both work. A slicked-back ponytail or a straight silver wig suits it. Chrome shadow, black liner, cool contour and a few silver gems at the temples are enough for the face. Reflective fabric shows every crease, so hang the dress in a steamy bathroom the night before instead of ironing it; a hot iron can dull or melt metallic prints.
13. Gold Skeleton Dress Costume

Gold bones warm up a dark dress and make it feel expensive. Choose black velvet or matte jersey with gold ribs, spine and hip bones, in a midi length, with gold low sandals or black pumps with a metallic trim. A smooth bun with two small gold combs suits it. On the face, bronze shadow, precise black liner, soft gold highlight on the brow bone and cheeks, and fine lines around the mouth. Add a gold cuff, a black clutch and small bone earrings. The one thing I'd check is that every gold matches. Yellow gold jewellery next to a pale champagne print looks like a mistake, so hold them together before you go.
14. Velvet Skeleton Dress Costume

Velvet is the dress I'd reach for on a cold night. A black velvet fit-and-flare with embroidered white bones keeps the classic contrast and feels substantial. Thick black tights and sturdy lace-up boots add warmth. If the neckline is open, a fitted mesh top underneath covers your arms without bulk. A half-up twist with a silver barrette suits it. Use matte white and charcoal for simple skull eyes, nose and cheek shading. A small velvet capelet, silver studs and a crossbody bag finish it. Velvet crushes when you sit on it for a long car ride, so steam it lightly from the back afterwards rather than pressing it flat.
15. Tulle Skeleton Dress Costume

Tulle gives this one its bounce. Look for a black dress with a fitted bone-print bodice and several light tulle layers to the knee, and wear black shorts or an opaque slip underneath because tulle is more see-through than it looks in photos. Striped tights and flat lace-up boots keep it grounded. A high bun or a short white wig shows off the neckline. Pale base, smoky eyes and simple black details around the nose and lips are enough. A ribbon choker and bone clips are the only extras I'd add. Tulle catches on velcro and rough edges, so carry a small smooth bag or a candy bucket rather than anything with hook-and-loop closures.
16. Bodycon Skeleton Dress Costume

A bodycon dress shows the print most clearly, but only if the bones sit in the right place on you. Look for a stretchy black midi where the ribs land on your chest, the pelvis at your hips and the leg bones on your thighs. Go up a size if you need to, because over-stretching spreads the print and makes the bones look wide and thin. A cropped black jacket, opaque tights and low platform boots finish the outfit. A sleek bob or a high ponytail keeps it modern. Grey shadow in the sockets and cheek hollows, a black nose and fine mouth lines are enough. Smoothing underlayers help the fabric sit flat without changing the shape.
17. Skeleton Sweater Dress Costume

The sweater dress is the cosiest skeleton here. Pick an oversized black knit with a large white rib cage and bone arms, then layer fleece-lined leggings, thick socks and chunky Chelsea boots. A loose topknot or a black beanie over soft waves keeps it casual. Smoky eyes, a small black nose and a few neat lines from the corners of the mouth are plenty. Bone earrings and a white crossbody bag add contrast. If the knit is very loose, a slim black belt gives some shape. Put the belt below the printed ribs, not across them, and check in a mirror that the rib cage is still centred.
18. Skeleton Maxi Dress Costume

Length is the drama in a maxi dress. Choose a floor-skimming black dress with a full white skeleton from neckline to lower skirt. A side slit helps you walk; wear black tights underneath. Low block-heeled boots won't catch the hem. Long straight hair or a waist-length white wig adds to the vertical line. Use pale skin, charcoal eyes, a dark nose and soft cheek hollows. A fitted cropped jacket keeps you warm without hiding the rib cage. Long gloves, silver earrings and a small structured bag finish it. Stand in your shoes and check the hem before you leave; if it touches the ground, a few safety pins on the inside will lift it for the night.
19. Skeleton Mini Dress Costume

The mini dress is quick and easy to move in, as long as the layers underneath are sorted. Start with a black long-sleeve mini with bright bones across the torso and skirt, then add opaque leggings or thick tights and flat knee-high boots. Twin braids, a high ponytail or a short black wig with blunt bangs all suit it. For a fast face, white liner around both eyes and small black bone details on one side only. A cropped bomber keeps you warm and leaves the print showing. If there's dancing or running around, wear fitted shorts underneath. A mini backpack, fingerless gloves and silver studs are enough.
20. Skeleton Skater Dress Costume

Skater dresses are easy to wear all evening. The waist is fitted and the skirt flares, so you can sit and walk without fuss. Choose a black one with a white rib cage on the bodice and smaller bones around the skirt, then add striped tights and cushioned Mary Janes or ankle boots. A curled ponytail tied with a white bow is a sweet touch. Matte grey shadow, black liner, a small painted nose and white around the lips suit it. Outdoors, wear a cardigan open so the ribs stay visible. Bone barrettes and a round bag finish it, and a light petticoat gives the skirt more lift.
21. Skeleton Slip Dress Costume

A slip dress needs layering to work as a costume. Wear a black satin midi slip with white bones over a fitted mesh or opaque long-sleeve top, then add patterned tights and sleek combat boots to toughen it up. A messy low bun with a few loose strands, or a shoulder-length silver wig, suits it. Smoky eyes, cool contour and small bone lines around the mouth are enough. A cropped faux-leather jacket adds structure and warmth, and a silver chain belt marks the waist. Satin straps slide off the shoulder all night, so a strip of fashion tape under each strap saves a lot of tugging. Carry a small shoulder bag.
22. Skeleton Shirt Dress Costume

The shirt dress is the quietest skeleton here, which makes it good for work or a casual party. Choose a black button-front dress with white bones across the chest and sleeves, add a narrow white belt, opaque tights and black loafers. A neat ponytail, smooth bob or low bun all fit. Skip the full skull: grey shadow, black winged liner and a few small bone marks near one cheek are enough. White studs and a black tote keep it tidy. If the dress feels short, wear slim black trousers underneath and treat it as a long tunic. Check the buttons between the ribs don't gape, since a gap there breaks the print right in the middle.
23. Hooded Skeleton Dress Costume

A hood does the hair styling for you. Choose a black long-sleeve midi with a white bone print and a roomy attached hood, then add black leggings and cushioned lace-up boots. Straight hair framing the face inside the hood, or a low braid tucked away, both work. Only the front of the face shows, so put the makeup there: pale base, charcoal sockets, a black nose and fine mouth lines. Reflective trim around the hood helps if you're out after dark. Hoods narrow what you can see to the sides, so push it back a little before crossing a road. Fingerless gloves and a small pouch under the outer layer are enough.
24. Skeleton Cape Dress Costume

A short cape gives movement without a prop. Start with a fitted black knee-length dress with clean white bones, then add a lightweight cropped black cape that leaves the rib cage on show. Opaque tights and pointed flat boots keep it neat. A smooth low bun or a straight white wig sits well under a raised collar. Soft grey contour, defined black eyes and thin white highlights on the brow and cheekbones suit it. Silver drops, black gloves and a box bag finish it. Keep the cape short. A long one gets stepped on and caught in doors at a crowded party, and it hides the dress you chose for its print.
25. Punk Skeleton Dress Costume

Punk gives a skeleton dress some grit. Choose a ripped-look black T-shirt dress with a white rib cage, tie a red plaid shirt around the waist, and add black leggings, combat boots and an open studded jacket. A textured ponytail, a faux side shave or temporary coloured streaks all suit it. Smudged liner, grey shadow and a deliberately rough skeletal mouth are right for this look. Silver ear cuffs, stacked wristbands and a chain-strap bag finish it. Tie the plaid shirt low on the hips so it doesn't cover the bottom ribs, and leave the sharpest studs at home if you'll be in a crowd.
26. Rock Star Skeleton Dress Costume

The rock star dress still looks like a party outfit, which is why it's useful. Start with a black sequin mini with silver bones, add sheer tights and sturdy heeled ankle boots rather than stilettos, and put on a cropped jacket with metallic trim that lets the ribs show. Big waves or a shaggy silver wig suit it. Smudged liner, metallic shadow, cool contour and a dark lip with faint bone lines complete the face. A microphone-shaped bag, a few statement rings and star earrings add fun. Stick to black, silver and white. Once a fourth colour comes in, it starts to look like a stage costume and less like a skeleton.
27. Disco Skeleton Dress Costume

Bell sleeves and holographic bones give a retro party look. Choose a black mini with flared sleeves, add opaque tights and silver platform boots with wide soles. Big curls or a rounded shoulder-length wig suit the era. Silver shimmer shadow, bold liner, pale highlight and neat bone accents around the nose and mouth finish the face. Reflective hoops and a mirrored mini bag catch the lights. Bell sleeves dip into drinks and food, so I'd push them up at the buffet. If the neckline is open, a fitted black top underneath keeps you comfortable.
28. Flapper Skeleton Dress Costume

Fringe swings with every step, so the bones need to sit above it. Look for a black knee-length shift with white or silver bones on the bodice and layered fringe on the skirt. Sheer tights and low T-strap heels are steadier than very high shoes. Set short hair in soft finger waves, or wear a waved bob wig with a narrow jeweled headband. Smoky eyes, defined brows, pale contour and fine lines around a deep berry lip suit the period. Long faux pearls and a beaded clutch finish it. Keep big accessories away from the fringe; bracelets and bag chains get tangled in it within minutes.
29. 1950s Skeleton Dress Costume

The 1950s dress is cheerful and works well at a daytime party. Choose a black tea-length dress with white ribs on the fitted bodice and scattered bones on the full skirt, then add a light petticoat, white ankle socks and black Mary Janes. A curled ponytail with a white scarf tied at the base suits the era. Classic winged liner and red lipstick do most of the work; small black bone marks on one side of the face are enough skeleton. A cropped cardigan keeps you warm and leaves the dress visible. Pearl-style earrings and a top-handle bag finish it. A petticoat makes the whole look, but a stiff net one scratches, so a soft one or a slip underneath is kinder on bare legs.
30. Western Skeleton Dress Costume

Western details freshen up a plain skeleton dress. Start with a black denim shirt dress with white bones on the chest, sleeves and skirt, cinch it with a silver-buckle belt, and add black tights and embroidered cowboy boots. Two loose braids under a black felt hat suit it. Warm grey shadow, a black nose and simple mouth lines keep the face understated. A fringed bag, silver star earrings and a white bandana at the neck add contrast. Denim is stiff, so try sitting down in it with the belt on; if the buttons strain, loosen the belt a notch. Choose a hat that fits snugly so it stays on in a crowd.
31. Pirate Skeleton Dress Costume

A high-low hem gives the pirate dress its shape. Choose a black dress with white ribs on the bodice and a striped underskirt showing beneath the shorter front, then add black leggings and buckled knee-high boots. Loose waves under a burgundy headscarf, or a long curly black wig, suit it. Smoky eyes, grey cheek contour, a black nose and fine lines around the lips are enough. A short fitted vest over the dress should end above the ribs, not over them. A weathered belt, hoop earrings and a rolled paper treasure map say pirate without any toy blades.
32. Skeleton Ballerina Dress Costume

A leotard-style dress with an attached tutu is easy to wear. Choose a black one with white ribs and a knee-length tulle skirt, then add opaque black tights and ballet flats with elastic straps. Elastic matters here; costume slippers without straps slide off on stairs. A smooth high bun with small white floral pins suits it. Pale makeup, grey shadow, a black nose and fine mouth lines finish the face. A fitted wrap cardigan keeps you warm before and after. Add a ribbon choker and tie wrist ribbons firmly. If you'll be dancing, raise your arms at home to check the tutu doesn't catch them.
33. Skeleton Fairy Dress Costume

Wings turn a skater-style skeleton dress into a fairy. Start with a short or midi skater with white bones, add translucent wings with silver veins, and wear black tights with lace-up flats. Soft waves with two small braids pinned back suit it. Pearly shadow, silver liner and gentle skeletal shading on the nose and cheeks are enough. A soft star wand, tiny crystal clips and a silver belt finish it. Choose small wings that sit flat between the shoulder blades. Big wings hide the very rib print you bought the dress for, and they knock into people in tight rooms.
34. Skeleton Cat Dress Costume

This dress takes the cat-and-skeleton idea literally, with cat-shaped ribs, a spine and a curled tail printed on the skirt. Add black leggings, paw-print socks and flat ankle boots. A soft ear headband over a high ponytail or a black shoulder-length wig suits it. Grey shadow around the eyes, a small black nose and white whiskers mixed with faint skeletal cheek lines finish the face. Paw gloves, a short clip-on tail and a fishbone felt purse add humour. Keep the tail short and clip it on rather than sewing it, so you can take it off before you sit.
35. Celestial Skeleton Dress Costume

Stars and moons make the celestial dress feel calm and grown-up. Choose a navy or black maxi with silver bones surrounded by small metallic constellations, add dark tights and silver ankle boots that peek through a slit or a raised hem. A braided crown with star pins or a long midnight-blue wig suits it. Deep blue shadow, silver liner, pale bone contour and tiny cosmetic stars at the temples finish the face. A moon-shaped bag and small drop earrings are enough jewellery. Navy can look black at night, so if you want the blue to show, add a little more silver at the eyes to catch the light.
Warm Layers That Don't Hide the Bones
A skeleton dress only works if people can see the skeleton, and that's the problem on a cold night. A big coat thrown over the top turns the costume into a black coat. I build warmth from underneath instead, and only add a top layer that leaves the chest open.
- Thermal leggings or fleece-lined tights in black disappear under any skirt and keep your legs warm for hours.
- A thin black long-sleeve base layer under a short-sleeved dress adds a lot of warmth and reads as part of the costume.
- A cropped jacket, a bolero or an open cardigan keeps your shoulders warm and leaves the rib cage on show.
- Gloves are part of the look anyway, so choose knitted bone-print gloves rather than thin satin ones.
- Boots with a warm sock inside beat thin flats on cold pavement.
If it rains, a clear plastic poncho over the dress keeps you dry and still lets the print show through. Bring a spare pair of tights in your bag, because a ladder in black tights is very visible against white leg bones.
Washing a Bone-Print Dress So It Lasts Another Year
Printed dresses don't like heat. Turn the dress inside out so the print doesn't rub against anything, wash it cold on a gentle cycle, and hang it to dry. Tumble drying is what cracks screen prints and dulls glow ink. Wipe off any makeup on the collar with a little micellar water before washing, because face paint can set into the fabric in a warm wash. Velvet, sequins and lace are best hand-washed or spot-cleaned. Store the dress folded with tissue paper between printed areas so the ink doesn't stick to itself.
A Skeleton Dress for Every Kind of Night Out
The dress decides most of the outcome, so get the print and fit right first, then build around it. A black and white knee-length dress is the safest start; velvet and sweater knits are kindest on a cold night, and sequins or metallic prints suit a party with good lighting. Think about how long you'll be walking and standing, pin up any hem that touches the ground, and fix wigs, wings and capes before you leave. Keep every face product skin-safe, and if you're unsure how much makeup to wear, start small. With a good skeleton print, a little paint around the eyes is usually enough.
