Tangled is a gift for anyone who likes to make costumes, because almost every character comes down to a strong color, a simple silhouette and one prop. A purple princess dress is only the start. There are disguises, palace outfits, the whole pub crew, two animal sidekicks and plenty of ways to dress a couple or a family. A lot of it can be thrifted, sewn in an evening or built from craft felt, and you can wear shoes you already own. When I plan one of these, I pick two or three signature details, like a flower-filled braid, a teal vest, a crimson gown, a little chameleon or a sun emblem, and let the rest stay simple. You'll find solo looks, pairs and full-cast group ideas below.

A Long Braid That Won't Pull or Drag
The long golden braid is the hardest part of most Rapunzel costumes, and it's usually the weight that causes trouble, not the look. A heavy braid drags the wig backward until the hairline shows, and anything that touches the floor gets stepped on within an hour. Here is how I build one that lasts a party.
- Start with a wig that already reaches the waist, then lengthen the braid with blonde yarn or a stuffed fabric tube braided in with the wig hair. Yarn is far lighter than extra wig fiber and costs much less.
- Anchor the wig before the braid goes on. A wig cap, a few bobby pins crossed through the cap into your own hair, and a wig grip band if you have one stop the slow slide back.
- Braid loosely and stop at about knee height. Rapunzel's hair should look long, but a braid that ends near the ankle is a trip hazard on stairs.
- Attach the flowers last. I hot glue each artificial bloom onto a small felt circle, then pin the felt into the braid. Glue straight onto synthetic fiber can melt it, and the felt lets you move flowers around.
On the night, drape the end of the braid over one forearm when you walk through a crowd. It takes the weight off your head and keeps the flowers out of reach of other people's feet.
1. Classic Rapunzel Costume With Purple Dress

Rapunzel's classic dress is where most people start. Look for a lavender maxi dress with puff sleeves, a fitted lace-up bodice and a soft skirt, or put a long-sleeve lilac top under a purple corset and matching skirt for an easy DIY version. Style an extra-long golden-blonde wig in loose waves and tuck small flowers around the crown. Pink blush, soft purple eyeshadow and a natural lip keep the face bright. Add a Pascal plush on one shoulder and carry a gold crown or a paper lantern. She's barefoot in the film, but nude ballet flats are the safer choice anywhere public. I sew a safety pin through the plush's back and pin it to the shoulder seam from inside; perched toys fall off the moment you lean forward. A small sun pendant at the neck rounds it out.
2. Rapunzel Floral Braid Costume

A flower-covered braid makes the familiar dress feel new. Wear a light purple dress with a corset-style bodice, striped puff sleeves and a full ankle-length skirt. Divide a very long blonde wig into three thick sections, braid it loosely and pin small artificial daisies, roses and purple blossoms all the way down with hidden pins. Peach blush, fluttery lashes and a pink lip keep the face fresh. A tiny green chameleon can sit on the shoulder or ride on a small crossbody bag, and a woven basket of craft flowers adds a fairy-tale touch. Lavender ballet flats or slip-ons disappear under the skirt. I always braid looser than feels right. A tight braid on a synthetic wig looks thin and stringy, while a loose one fills out and holds the flowers better.
3. Short Brown Hair Rapunzel Costume

Short-haired Rapunzel is the version I recommend to anyone who doesn't want to manage a floor-length wig all night. Wear the signature lavender dress, or put a pale purple blouse with a plum corset belt and flowing midi skirt. A chin-length brown wig with uneven, flipped-out ends makes the change obvious. Light freckles, rosy cheeks and natural eye makeup keep her bright. Carry a gold crown, perch a Pascal plush on your shoulder and wear a sun pendant or small sun earrings. A satchel holds your phone and keys. Brown or nude ballet flats keep it comfortable. A choppy bob wig will look too neat out of the bag, so I trim a few ends shorter with plain scissors to get that freshly cut look.
4. Rapunzel Lantern Festival Costume

Warm lantern details suit an evening party. Start with a purple puff-sleeve dress and fitted ribbon-laced bodice, and style a long blonde wig in a low flowered braid so it stays manageable while you walk. Soft gold eyeshadow, pink cheeks and a little shimmer on the cheekbones catch the light. Carry a battery-powered paper lantern, never one with a real flame. Gold sun earrings, a tiny crown-shaped hairpin and a green chameleon tell the story without crowding the dress. Gold or lavender ballet flats keep you comfortable. If it's cold, add a pale purple capelet. I tape the lantern's battery pack inside the top with a strip of cloth tape, so it doesn't rattle loose when you swing it in photos.
5. Rapunzel Tower Painter Costume

This one brings Rapunzel's tower hobbies into the costume. Wear a lavender peasant blouse under a plum lace-up vest with a soft purple maxi skirt, then tie on a cream artist's apron painted with washable suns, flowers and clouds. A long blonde wig in a loose side braid with ribbon woven through it, plus freckles, peach blush and a pink lip tint, keep her cheerful. Carry oversized clean paintbrushes, a wooden palette with dried paint on it, or a rolled canvas of sun motifs, and pin a Pascal plush near the shoulder. Lilac flats or short neutral boots finish it. I paint the apron with fabric paint, not acrylic craft paint, because acrylic cracks and flakes every time the fabric folds. Every other piece is easy to find secondhand.
6. Rapunzel Adventure Costume With Pants

The adventure look from the animated series is the one to wear if you want to move. Start with a purple fitted top, cropped plum jacket and dark lavender pants, then add a wide brown belt, small hip pouch and flat knee-high brown boots. A long blonde wig in a practical braid with just a few flowers near the top stays secure. Soft purple eye makeup, freckles and pink blush keep the character recognizable. Carry a rolled map or light satchel, and fasten a tiny green chameleon to the shoulder. Fingerless brown gloves add one more adventurous touch. I'd point anyone heading outdoors or to a long convention day to this one, and anyone who simply prefers pants to a long skirt.
7. Rapunzel Wedding Costume With Short Hair

A wedding Rapunzel swaps the purple for ivory. Choose an ivory or cream gown with sheer sleeves, delicate lace and a little gold embroidery at the bodice. Tea length is easier to walk in; full length brings more royal drama. Pair it with the short brown bob wig and a small gold tiara above the bangs. Rosy cheeks, champagne eyeshadow and a pink lip suit it. Carry a bouquet of purple flowers and sun charms instead of white blooms, and add pearl earrings and a gold pendant. Ivory flats or low block heels keep you steady. I'd buy the gown a size up if it's secondhand and take it in at the side seams; lace bodices that are tight across the back pop their seams the first time you raise your arms.
8. Flynn Rider Costume With Teal Vest

Flynn Rider is about as easy as a character costume gets. Put a loose white button-front shirt under a teal or blue-green vest, then add fitted brown pants, a wide belt and dark brown knee-high boots or boot covers. A short, tousled brown wig gives his swept-back hair, or style your own brown hair with a light pomade. Keep makeup to brow gel and a touch of contour if you like. A brown crossbody satchel with a rolled wanted poster inside, and a small gold crown peeking out of the bag, add the story. Then practice the smolder for photos. Every piece goes back into a regular wardrobe. If you can't find a teal vest, I'd buy a cheap plain one and dye it; teal is the color people use to name him.
9. Flynn Rider Wanted Poster Costume

Make the famous wanted poster wearable. Dress in a white peasant shirt, teal vest, slim brown pants, wide belt and tall brown boots, with short brown hair pushed back and a little messy. Draw or print an oversized wanted-poster frame on light foam board, leaving the center open for your face and shoulders. Get the nose wrong on purpose, which is the joke every fan is waiting for. Carry the frame for photos and add a strap so it can hang on your back the rest of the night. A satchel and small crown help, and neutral makeup with defined brows is plenty. In my experience a foam-board frame wider than your shoulders catches every doorway and every person you pass, so I keep it just inside shoulder width.
10. Eugene Royal Guard Costume

Eugene's royal outfit is the polished side of the same character. Start with a dark navy or royal-blue fitted jacket with gold trim, structured shoulders and decorative buttons, over a white high-collar shirt, fitted charcoal pants and tall black or brown boots. A wide belt helps, and a small blue cape fastened at one shoulder adds ceremony. A short brown wig in the swept-back shape and lightly defined brows finish him. Carry a rolled royal announcement, a gold sun medallion or a small crown instead of any weapon. Gold trim is where I'd spend effort. Iron-on metallic braid peels at the curves, so I stitch it along the front edges by hand with a few loose stitches; it bends with the jacket. It suits formal parties, stage events and royal-family groups.
11. Mother Gothel Costume With Red Dress

Mother Gothel gives you a proper villain without any scary makeup. Choose a floor-length burgundy or deep red gown with wide sleeves, a square neckline and gold or black trim, and pull in the waist with a corset-style bodice or fitted velvet belt. A big black curly wig parted down the middle is half the character. Arched brows, plum eyeshadow, strong lashes and a dark berry lip give her theatrical polish. Add gold drop earrings and carry a small hand mirror or a golden flower. Black low heels or pointed flats keep it practical, and a crimson cape adds warmth outside. Velvet is the fabric I'd reach for. Its deep red reads richer in photos than satin, and it sits clearly apart from Rapunzel's soft purple.
12. Pascal Chameleon Costume

Pascal is a cheerful, cozy choice for adults, teens or kids. Start with a bright green hoodie and matching joggers or leggings. Sew a row of soft felt triangles down the hood and back in light and dark greens, add big removable chameleon eyes to the hood and curl a stuffed fabric tail behind the waistband. A few green scales painted at the temples with skin-safe makeup is enough on the face. Green gloves and matching sneakers keep the color unbroken. Carry a purple flower, a tiny paper lantern or a small princess doll for context. I stuff the tail with polyester fiberfill and stitch a pipe cleaner or a length of wire coat hanger, ends taped, inside the outer edge so the curl holds its shape.
13. Maximus Horse Costume

Maximus becomes a fun human costume with white clothes and a few horse details. Wear a white hoodie and matching pants, then attach a soft gray mane from the hood down the upper back. Add felt horse ears, a white fabric tail and a removable tan harness across the chest. Paint the tip of the nose light gray and push the brows down into his suspicious glare. White gloves and clean white sneakers keep the shape without a bulky mascot suit. Carry artificial apples or a royal sun badge, and use a brown belt to hold a small pouch. I cut the mane from gray fleece strips rather than yarn; fleece doesn't shed on the white hoodie. Put him next to Flynn and the jokes take care of themselves.
14. Cassandra Lady-In-Waiting Costume

Cassandra's early lady-in-waiting outfit mixes palace clothing with practical touches. Wear a burgundy long-sleeve tunic with dark trim over fitted charcoal pants, then add a brown waist belt, structured shoulder accents and tall black boots. A short black wig in a neat bob with a strong side part does a lot of the work. Defined brows, a little gray eyeshadow and a muted rose lip give her that focused look. Carry a folded palace schedule, messenger pouch or small sun notebook. Fingerless gloves add function without fuss, and a dark red capelet adds warmth and movement. Fans of the series will know her at once. I find a sharp side part sells this character more than anything; I set it with a little wig spray and pin the long side behind the ear.
15. Cassandra Warrior Costume

Cassandra's warrior look depends on strong shapes and layered textures, and none of it needs to be heavy. Start with a fitted black top, dark gray pants and a burgundy sleeveless tunic. Add lightweight foam shoulder guards, a wide utility belt, black wrist cuffs and tall lace-up boots. Leave out realistic armor and weapons; a red cape, a sun badge and structured gloves explain the role well enough. Style a short black bob wig with swept bangs, then add smoky gray eyes, defined brows and a neutral lip. A small crossbody pouch carries the essentials. For the shoulder guards I heat-shape thin craft foam with a hair dryer around a ball or bowl, then seal and paint it. It keeps the curve and you can still sit down.
16. Moonstone Cassandra Costume

Moonstone Cassandra is a dramatic purple-and-black build for serious fans. Wear a fitted black jumpsuit, or a long-sleeve top with leggings, under a deep navy tunic. Angular purple foam panels at the shoulders, waist and forearms suggest magical armor. A long black wig with vivid blue streaks gives her transformed hair, and cool violet eyeshadow, sharp brows and a little blue highlight at the temples finish the face. A glowing blue pendant or battery-powered stone is the key prop. Black knee-high boots and a dark cape round it out. Keep the armor light with rounded edges. I strap foam panels on with wide elastic and hook-and-loop tape rather than gluing them to the jumpsuit, so the jumpsuit can still go in the wash.
17. Varian Alchemist Costume

Varian's alchemist outfit has a light steampunk feel and a young, inventive personality. Start with a teal shirt under a brown fitted vest, then add dark pants and a wide utility belt hung with small empty plastic bottles, fabric pouches and painted cardboard tools. Brown lace-up boots and fingerless gloves suit him. A shaggy black wig with one bright blue streak near the front is his signature. Keep the makeup natural with a little smudged gray shadow to suggest workshop grime, never injuries. Clear goggles on the forehead and a glowing blue bottle add color, and a small notebook of hand-drawn formulas finishes it. I tie the bottles on with short loops of cord instead of gluing them; a glued bottle snaps off the first time you sit.
18. Lance Strongbow Costume

Lance Strongbow pairs rich colors with an easygoing adventurer look. Wear a mustard yellow shirt under a deep purple vest or short jacket, with fitted brown pants, a wide belt, wrist cuffs and tall dark boots. A short black curly wig and neatly shaped facial hair capture his face, and light brow definition is enough makeup. Carry a canvas travel bag, rolled map or small sun-emblem pouch. A purple scarf adds movement and ties the layers together. Pick breathable fabrics, since the shirt, vest and belt already give plenty of detail. He fits naturally beside Eugene, Rapunzel and Cassandra. I'd also send anyone to this one for a solo convention look; yellow and purple together are hard to miss across a hall.
19. Queen Arianna Costume With Blue Gown

Queen Arianna looks royal without being hard to put together. Choose a floor-length blue gown with a fitted bodice, modest neckline and flowing skirt, then add gold trim at the waist and sleeves. If you're adapting a formal dress you already own, use ribbon tacked on with a few stitches so it comes off cleanly afterward. Style a long brown wig in soft waves or a low braided updo with a delicate gold crown and matching drop earrings. Champagne eyeshadow, rosy blush and berry-pink lipstick keep her refined. Carry a sun-emblem fan, royal scroll or small purple bouquet, and wear gold flats. A pale blue capelet adds warmth on a cool night. I like this as a quiet partner for anyone dressing as Rapunzel's family.
20. King Frederic Costume With Royal Cape

King Frederic suits adults who like structured formal layers. Begin with a cream high-collar shirt and a navy or royal-blue tunic, tailored dark pants, a broad gold belt and a long blue cape lined in a pale fabric. Gold ribbon at the cuffs and collar gives a royal finish for very little money. Wear a short brown wig and a neat beard, or style your own hair, then add a simple gold crown and a large sun medallion on the chest. A rolled proclamation is a better prop than anything combat-related. Dark brown dress boots stay comfortable on your feet. A lined cape hangs better than a single layer, and I sew the lining in rather than gluing it, so the cape swings instead of flaring stiffly. He anchors a palace-themed family well.
21. Captain Of The Guards Costume

The Captain of the Guards brings a palace uniform into a group. Wear a dark gray or black long-sleeve tunic over matching pants, then add a structured silver-gray vest, broad belt, light foam shoulder panels and tall black boots. A deep red cape fastened at one shoulder is the main splash of color. Short gray hair or a combed silver wig and a trimmed mustache if you like, plus serious brows, give him his look. Pin a gold sun badge to the chest and carry a rolled patrol map or palace orders. Skip hard armor and realistic weapons. I make the silver-gray vest from a thrifted gray vest brushed lightly with metallic fabric paint, which looks like metal from a few steps away and still moves like cloth.
22. Stabbington Brothers Duo Costume

The Stabbington Brothers are an easy pairing for two friends or siblings. Both wear dark brown tunics, rough-textured vests, black pants, wide belts and heavy-looking boots built from ordinary shoes with soft covers. Matching knit caps or messy dark wigs strengthen the twin effect. A little brown eyeshadow shading at the cheekbones adds grit; keep it stylized and skip any fake wounds. Put one in a charcoal vest and the other in deep brown so they match without looking identical. Burlap-style satchels, rope-handled pouches or wanted posters make safe props. I'd buy both vests from the same place, because the brothers only read as a pair when the textures line up. Then both wear their grumpiest faces.
23. Hook Hand Pub Thug Costume

Hook Hand's pub outfit can be playful and stage-safe with no realistic hook at all. Wear a loose cream shirt under a brown leather-look vest, dark cropped pants and rugged brown boots, with a broad belt and a striped waist sash for a layered tavern shape. Style a messy brown wig. For the hook, I sew a soft fabric cuff that slips over one hand and attach a rounded silver foam curve, so it's obviously theatrical and nobody gets poked. Carry sheet music or a small light keyboard prop to show his dream of playing piano. Warm brown eyeshadow and a friendly expression work better than intimidating makeup. He's an easy anchor for a Snuggly Duckling group.
24. Shorty Pub Costume

Shorty is a quirky, comfortable way to join a group without anything complicated. Start with an oversized tan shirt, brown vest and loose olive or gray pants tucked into soft brown boots, then add a wide belt with a few empty fabric pouches and a floppy neutral cap. A shaggy white wig and short costume beard give his comic look, and rosy cheeks with slightly exaggerated brows keep it friendly. Carry a wooden-look cup made from painted plastic or a rolled tavern menu, and hide a small sun badge on the vest. Rumpled layers make thrift shopping easy. I'd wash the costume beard before wearing; most come in a crushed packet, and a gentle rinse and air-dry fluffs the fibers back out.
25. Vladimir Unicorn Collector Costume

Vladimir looks tough, and that's what makes his ceramic unicorns funny. Wear a dark rust tunic, black vest, loose brown pants and a wide belt, with soft foam wrist cuffs and sturdy-looking brown boots. A bald cap or very short dark wig, strong brows and a little contour give a stern but family-friendly face. The essential prop is a small pastel unicorn figurine, held carefully in both hands or sitting in a padded basket, maybe with a tiny ribbon around it. Leave out combat props and let the collection be the joke. I'd go with a short wig over a bald cap unless you've used one before, because a cheap cap wrinkles at the forehead and shows a clear edge. He works alone and even better beside the pub crew.
26. Ulf The Mime Costume

Ulf the mime is cheap and easy to build from basic clothes. Wear a black-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt, fitted black pants, suspenders and flexible black shoes, plus white gloves and a small black beret. Apply white face paint in a light, even layer, then draw thin black brows and a simple line under each eye. Keep it cheerful, not eerie. Carry a small card reading I Have A Dream or a purple paper flower to tie him to the pub scene. A fitted black vest adds structure, and a few practiced silent gestures make the photos. White face paint is the bit I'd plan carefully. I set it with translucent powder and wear the striped shirt with a boat neck so it doesn't rub along a collar.
27. Attila The Baker Costume

Attila is a big, mysterious shape with a sweet baking secret. Wear an oversized black hooded cape over a dark gray tunic and loose black pants, with the hood open enough to see clearly and soft black fabric across the lower face instead of a rigid mask. Tie on a clean white baker's apron for the contrast. Carry a basket of artificial cupcakes, a light rolling pin or decorated recipe cards, with black gloves and lace-up boots. The hood does most of the character work, so makeup can stay minimal. Add a tiny purple sun emblem on the apron. When I cut a big hood for a costume like this, I make it deeper than wide and add a little elastic at the back; that stops it sliding over your eyes every time you look down.
28. Kiera And Catalina Duo Costume

Kiera and Catalina make a colorful sister pair for kids, teens or adults. One wears a rust-red tunic, brown cropped jacket, fitted pants and ankle boots. The other chooses a plum tunic with a mustard scarf, dark leggings and matching boots. Give both practical belts, small crossbody pouches and fingerless gloves, with dark hair in messy braids or short layered wigs. Light freckles and rosy cheeks are enough makeup. Rolled maps, tiny plush animals or matching sun charms make safe props. Use the same rugged textures with different accent colors. I like this as a less expected alternative to the princess-and-thief pair, and it holds up well at active events where a gown would get in the way.
29. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn are the couple people name first. One wears a lavender puff-sleeve dress with a lace-up bodice, a long blonde flowered braid, rosy makeup and purple flats, plus a green chameleon and a small gold crown. The other wears a white loose-collar shirt, teal vest, brown fitted pants, wide belt and tall brown boots, with short brown hair pushed back and a satchel holding a wanted poster. A battery-powered lantern gives you a shared prop for photos. Use light fabrics and keep the braid off the floor so neither of you trips. I'd have Flynn carry the lantern when the two of you walk; it frees Rapunzel's hands to manage the braid and skirt.
30. Rapunzel And Pascal Best Friend Costume

Rapunzel with her chameleon sidekick makes a playful, nonromantic pair. The Rapunzel wears a purple dress, long blonde braid with flowers, soft pink makeup, lavender flats and a small sun pendant. The Pascal wears a green hoodie and matching pants with felt back spikes, a chameleon-eye hood, curled fabric tail, green gloves and sneakers, plus a few green scales at the temples. Rapunzel carries a paper lantern while Pascal holds a purple flower or a little crown. Keep both bright and comfortable. I steer parent-and-child pairs toward this one, with the child as Pascal; a hoodie is warm, there is nothing to trip on and kids love the tail.
31. Rapunzel And Mother Gothel Duo Costume

Rapunzel and Mother Gothel play off each other through color and shape. Rapunzel wears a soft lavender gown, an extra-long blonde braid, flower clips, rosy makeup and purple flats, with a gold crown or sun pendant. Gothel wears a floor-length burgundy dress with wide sleeves, a black curly wig, arched brows, berry lipstick and black shoes, with a hand mirror or golden flower. For photos, the two can hold opposite ends of a long gold ribbon to stand in for the magic hair, with no trip hazard. The contrast is easy to read across a room. I'd keep Gothel in a deep, matte red and Rapunzel in pale purple; two mid-tone purples side by side blur together in pictures.
32. Rapunzel Flynn Rider And Pascal Trio Costume

A trio of Rapunzel, Flynn and Pascal mixes fairy-tale glamour, adventure and animal humor. Rapunzel wears a purple corset-style dress, long blonde floral braid, pink makeup and lavender flats. Flynn wears a white shirt, teal vest, brown pants, belt, satchel and tall boots with swept-back brown hair. Pascal wears a green hoodie and pants, felt spikes, hooded eyes, a curled tail, gloves and matching sneakers. A shared battery lantern and small gold crown give everyone something to do in photos. Keep the hem, braid and tail off the floor. Three friends can do it, though I suggest it most often to families with one younger child, who usually wants the warm animal role anyway.
33. Tangled Family Costume For Four

A family of four can cover Rapunzel, Flynn, Pascal and Maximus with no mascot suits. Rapunzel wears a lavender dress and flowered blonde braid, Flynn a white shirt, teal vest, brown pants and boots. Pascal gets the green hoodie with felt eyes, back spikes and a curled tail, and Maximus a white sweatshirt and pants with horse ears, a gray mane, fabric tail and white sneakers. Give each person one light accessory: a crown, a wanted poster, a purple flower or a basket of apples. Comfortable shoes and soft fabrics let kids and adults move. I sew both animal costumes from hoodies in the same weight of fleece, so the two sidekicks look like they belong together even in different colors.
34. Snuggly Duckling Pub Thug Group Costume

A Snuggly Duckling group lets friends build different characters around one tavern. Hook Hand wears a cream shirt and brown vest, Vladimir a rust tunic with his unicorn, Ulf mime stripes, Attila a black cape and baker's apron, and Shorty rumpled neutral layers. Everyone gets dark pants, broad belts, soft boot covers and their own wig or hat. Use safe props like sheet music, recipe cards, flowers, wanted posters or empty pouches. Keep makeup theatrical but friendly: strong brows, rosy cheeks or simple mime lines. I'd tie a short purple ribbon on everyone's belt as the shared dream thread. It's a small detail, but it links five very different costumes into one scene.
35. Tangled Cast Group Costume

For a big group, pull the best-known characters from the film and the series together. Rapunzel in purple with a long blonde braid, Flynn in teal and brown, Gothel in burgundy, Pascal in green and Maximus in white form the core. Cassandra in black and red, Varian in teal with goggles, Queen Arianna in blue, King Frederic in royal navy and Lance in yellow and purple fill it out. Each person needs the character's hair, comfortable shoes, simple makeup and one light prop. Lanterns, maps, crowns, flowers, notebooks and sun badges tie the group together safely. When I line a group up for photos, I put the royals in the middle and the two animals in front, where their shapes don't hide anyone.
How Much of This Can You Sew in an Evening?
Not every Tangled piece needs a pattern and a weekend. I sort the work into three rough piles before I start, so the night before Halloween isn't spent on the hardest job.
An evening or less
Pascal's felt back spikes and eyes, Maximus's fleece mane and ears, a gold-ribbon trim on a thrifted dress, Ulf's whole outfit and any of the pub crew's sashes and pouches. These are cutting and hand stitching, and none of them needs to fit closely.
A weekend
Rapunzel's striped puff sleeves are the classic weekend job. I sew them as separate sleeve pieces with elastic at the top and bottom, then stitch them into a lilac top, which is far easier than drafting a whole bodice. A lined cape for King Frederic or Gothel's wide sleeves also fit here.
Buy or thrift instead
A fitted lace-up bodice and a floor-length gown take real fitting time. Unless you enjoy that kind of project, a secondhand dress you alter is usually a better use of your hours, and it often has better fabric than a party-store costume.
Rapunzel's Lavender Dress Comes First
There's a Tangled costume here for a solo fan, a couple, siblings, a family or a whole group of friends. The strongest ones lean on color: Rapunzel's lavender dress, Flynn's teal vest, Gothel's crimson gown and Pascal's bright green tail. You don't need a store-bought replica. Thrifted dresses, plain shirts, felt details, your own boots and a few handmade props get you most of the way on a small budget. Put your effort into a wig that stays on, light layers, safe props and shoes that suit the night. If I were sewing just one this year, I'd start with Rapunzel's dress, then add the others one character at a time.
