Every princess on this list can be broken down into a handful of pieces: a bodice, a skirt, a hairstyle, shoes and one prop that carries the story. Once you see a costume that way, it stops being intimidating. Below you'll find the big ball gowns, but also the cottage, village and adventure outfits, and a few versions built almost entirely from regular clothes. Each princess has her own color palette and silhouette, and those two things do more of the identifying than any amount of trim. I've noted where satin and tulle are worth the effort, where a closet piece does the same job, and which wigs need taming before the night.

Getting Gown Volume Without a Hoop
About half of these princesses need a full skirt, and almost none of them need a hoop. Hoops look grand in photos but make cars, doorways, stairs and restrooms a real struggle. A soft petticoat does nearly the same job.
- Soft tulle petticoats give a rounded, floaty fullness and pack down for the car. Stiff crinoline netting holds more shape but scratches bare legs, so wear tights or a slip underneath it.
- Make the petticoat an inch or two shorter than the skirt. If it peeks out at the hem, the gown looks unfinished.
- Two thinner petticoats layered together usually look better than one very stiff one, and you can take one off if the room gets hot.
- An elastic waist sits more comfortably than a drawstring for a whole evening, since a drawstring digs in when you sit.
For the gowns themselves, I'd pick cotton sateen or a matte satin over cheap shiny satin when you have the choice. High-shine satin shows every crease and catches the camera flash, while a softer sheen looks richer and forgives a few hours of sitting.
1. Snow White Classic Costume

Snow White reads from her colors alone: a royal blue bodice, short puff sleeves with red inserts, a high white collar and a yellow skirt. Get those four right and people know her from across a street. The collar is the fiddly part, so I cut it from interfacing covered in white cotton and attach it to the neckline with a few hand stitches, which keeps it standing up. Add a short red cape if it's cool. A chin-length black bob with curled-under ends, or a smooth black wig, plus the red bow headband. Rosy cheeks and a bright red lip. A shiny artificial apple, cream ankle socks and low black Mary Janes.
2. Snow White Cottage Costume

This cottage version swaps the gown for clothes you can actually do things in, which makes it a strong pick for school or work. A light blue blouse with puffed sleeves goes over a long golden-yellow skirt, with a white apron at the front and a fitted navy vest to shape the waist. Wear a short black bob wig with a red ribbon tied around it. A vest with a little structure matters here; a soft knit one just looks like a cardigan. Natural makeup, pink blush and a cherry lip, a woven basket of fabric flowers or apples, and black flats.
3. Snow White Cape Costume

Here the red cape becomes the main event. A blue velvet or satin top with puff sleeves and a floor-length yellow skirt sit underneath, and the cape should stop at the waist or hips. Longer capes look regal for photos but catch on everything when you walk. I line short capes with a lightweight fabric so the inside looks finished when it flips back, which it constantly does. A black bob wig, the red bow and a fine gold necklace, with porcelain-style makeup and classic red lips. A gold hand mirror or an apple in a pouch, cream opaque tights and black block heels.
4. Cinderella Blue Ball Gown Costume

The blue gown starts with a pale blue dress with a fitted bodice, a full skirt and soft draping at the hips. A layered tulle petticoat underneath gives the volume without a hoop, and it lets you sit in a car. Long white or icy-blue gloves bring it closer to the classic silhouette, and the hair goes into a smooth high bun with a powder-blue headband. Silver eyeshadow, peach blush, glossy pink lips and a black ribbon choker for contrast. Clear flats or low transparent heels suggest glass slippers. I'd avoid genuinely clear plastic heels for a long night, though; they don't breathe, and feet slide around inside them once they get warm.
5. Cinderella Maid Costume

The maid version is the easiest Cinderella to put together, and the most comfortable. A brown or charcoal long-sleeved midi dress with a modest neckline, a pale blue or white apron and a light kerchief over the hair. A blonde wig in a low ponytail, or your own hair tucked under the scarf. I fold the kerchief into a triangle and tie it at the nape rather than under the chin, which looks right and stays on. Minimal makeup, a feather duster or a small sewing basket, and brown flats or plain ankle boots. It's a practical choice for work, school and anything outdoors.
6. Cinderella Pink Dress Costume

The pink dress is the one her friends made, so it's supposed to look homemade, which takes a lot of pressure off. Pick a blush-pink midi or long dress with short puff sleeves and a full skirt, then add darker pink bows along the waist and skirt. Bows made from wired ribbon hold their shape all night; plain satin ribbon droops within an hour. A pale sash or white ruffle frames the bodice. Blonde hair in a loosely curled low ponytail with a satin ribbon, rosy cheeks and a soft berry lip. A sewing basket of ribbon and big wooden spools is a sweet prop. Pink ballet flats or low cream heels.
7. Cinderella Silver Transformation Costume

Sequins and tulle in silver-blue turn this into the sparkliest Cinderella on the list. A fitted top, a layered tulle skirt and reflective sequin details, with sheer shoulder drapes and elbow-length gloves. The hair goes into a polished high bun with a crystal comb or sparkling headband. Pearly eyeshadow, a little highlighter and a glossy rose lip, with a black velvet choker to stop the pale outfit washing out. Sequined bodices can scratch the inside of the arms, so I check the underarm seams and add a soft lining strip there if needed. A clock clutch, then clear block heels or rhinestone flats.
8. Aurora Pink Gown Costume

Aurora's pink gown needs a floor-length rose-pink dress with a fitted waist and a white off-the-shoulder collar. That wide collar is the giveaway, so make sure it lies flat; a strip of boning or wide elastic inside the top edge stops it sliding down your arms. A full pleated skirt, or a light petticoat under a simple gown. A small gold crown, a long golden-blonde wig with soft curls and side-swept bangs, and lavender eyeshadow with a rose lip. A single pink rose or a lightweight craft spindle as a prop. Pointed nude flats or low pink heels, and a matching pink cape on a cold night.
9. Aurora Blue Gown Costume

The blue version is the same gown in cool tones, a full-length royal or cornflower blue dress with a fitted bodice and a wide pale collar. A tulle underskirt for shape, a slim gold crown, and long curled blonde hair with a side fringe. If your wig's fringe is too long, trim it a little at a time with the wig on your head, cutting into the ends with the points of the scissors so it doesn't look blunt. Icy blue eyeshadow, peach-pink cheeks and a rose lip. A blue rose bouquet or a small purse with gold stars, and silver flats or blue block heels.
10. Briar Rose Cottage Costume

Briar Rose is Aurora in the woods, and I think she's underrated as a costume. A beige or light gray blouse with a white pointed collar, a calf-length brown skirt and a fitted black or charcoal corset-style vest. A dusty-purple scarf around the head and a long blonde wig in loose waves. If you're new to corset-style vests, buy one with lacing at the back as well as the front, so it can be adjusted to your actual waist instead of pinching. Understated makeup, a wicker basket of fabric berries and wildflowers, and brown flats or lace-up shoes. It's easy to wear outdoors all evening.
11. Ariel Mermaid Costume

The mermaid look is where most Ariel costumes struggle, because a true fishtail skirt is hard to walk in. A high-waisted sequin maxi skirt that narrows a little near the knees before flaring at the hem gives the fin shape and still lets you take normal steps. Test it on stairs before you commit. Pair it with a modest purple shell-patterned top, or a lavender corset over a fitted shirt. A long, bright red wavy wig with plenty of volume, sea-green eyeshadow and glossy pink lips. A plush fish or a fork-shaped hair clip, pearl earrings, and flat shoes hidden under the hem.
12. Ariel Blue Village Dress Costume

No sequins, no tail, and almost every piece can be worn again, which makes the village dress my favorite practical Ariel. A long-sleeved white blouse with gathered sleeves, a black fitted bodice over it and a calf-length blue skirt, finished with a pale blue apron and a big dark bow at the back of the hair. That bow is the detail people remember, so make it larger than feels natural; mine are cut from a strip of fabric about the width of a hand. A long red wig in loose waves, light blue eyeshadow and a coral lip. A small basket, black flats or low ankle boots.
13. Ariel Pink Palace Gown Costume

Pale pink against red hair is a striking contrast, and this palace gown leans into it. Choose a full-length pale-pink dress with puffed sleeves, a fitted waist and darker rose panels around the bodice; a layered skirt gives enough volume without a hoop. A long red wig with soft curls pulled back at the temples. Champagne eyeshadow, warm blush and a raspberry lip, with pearl drops and a fine gold necklace. Big puff sleeves deflate in damp weather, so I stuff the sleeve heads with a little tulle tacked inside. A shell clutch, then pink ballet flats or low gold heels. It holds its own in group photos.
14. Ariel Seafoam Dress Costume

The seafoam dress is the simplest Ariel silhouette, a pale aqua or mint gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a flowing skirt. Chiffon or organza gives the airy movement. They also fray quickly, so if you're hemming one yourself, a narrow rolled hem or a line of fray stopper on the raw edge keeps it neat. A long red wig in windswept waves with a pearl or shell clip on one side, luminous makeup and glossy coral lips. Pearl earrings and a seashell pendant. A decorative comb is enough of a prop. Nude flats or low silver heels.
15. Belle Yellow Ball Gown Costume

Belle's gold gown wants a structured bodice and a full, gathered skirt, ideally layers of yellow tulle or satin with draping across the hips. Cheap yellow satin can look brassy under flash, so I'd go for a warmer gold shade and a fabric with a soft sheen rather than a high shine. Matching opera gloves and a small gold hairpiece. Brown hair in a half-up bun with curls over the shoulders, gold eyeshadow and a rosy lip. A red rose under a light clear cover or clipped to an evening bag, and gold flats. Pick ankle length over a train; trains get trodden on at parties.
16. Belle Blue Village Dress Costume

The blue village dress is the friendliest Belle to wear all day, and teachers in particular tend to love it. A white blouse with elbow-length sleeves under a fitted blue dress or pinafore, a white apron at the waist, and brown hair in a low ponytail tied with a blue ribbon, with a few curled strands left loose. A pinafore is easy to make from a simple dress pattern if you can't find one in the right shade of blue. Warm neutral makeup and rose lip balm. A stack of light books or a woven market basket, and brown flats or ankle boots for walking.
17. Belle Winter Cape Costume

The winter look is the warmest princess here, and the cape does the heavy lifting. A long red or burgundy dress with a fitted bodice and full skirt, then a deep-red hooded cape trimmed with white faux fur. Faux fur sheds from cut edges, so I cut it from the back with a craft knife through the backing only, never through the pile, and shake it out outside before sewing. Brown hair half-up with soft curls and a gold ribbon. Warm brown eyes and a berry lip. A rose, a small gold mirror or a closed storybook, with cream tights and brown low-heeled boots underneath.
18. Jasmine Turquoise Costume

Jasmine's turquoise look is two pieces: loose harem-style trousers and a matching fitted top, with gold trim at the neckline, waist and cuffs. I'd use a matte or lightly lustrous fabric, since very shiny satin shows every crease from sitting. Add a sheer overskirt panel for movement. Her ponytail is the defining hairstyle; style a long black wig and tie it off in sections with turquoise bands, spacing them evenly down its length. A wide turquoise headband with a blue jewel at the center, gold eyeshadow, winged liner and bronzed blush. A gold lamp purse or a plush tiger, gold flats, big earrings and cuff bracelets.
19. Jasmine Purple Royal Costume

Deep purple gives Jasmine a richer, more formal look. Wear purple harem trousers with a matching long-sleeved cropped top over a fitted camisole, then gold piping, jeweled buttons and a sheer purple overskirt. The bubble ponytail is a long black wig gathered with gold bands, and it gets heavy; anchor the wig with combs or pins at the crown so its weight doesn't drag it back. A purple headband with a blue jewel at the hairline. Plum shadow, black liner and a berry lip. A jeweled lamp purse, pointed gold flats and wide cuffs.
20. Jasmine Red Palace Costume

Red is a bold alternative to the familiar turquoise, and it stands out nicely in a group of princesses. Loose red trousers and a matching top with structured shoulders or draped sleeves, gold trim at the waist, neckline and cuffs, and a sheer red overskirt or hip scarf. The same sectioned black ponytail, tied with red and gold bands, and a matching jeweled headband. Bronze eyeshadow, defined liner and a classic red lip. A golden lamp clutch or a birdcage purse. With red, check how sheer the overskirt is in daylight before leaving; some chiffons are more see-through than they look indoors. Gold pointed flats and statement earrings.
21. Mulan Matchmaker Costume

The matchmaker outfit is all layers, and the order matters. Start with a cream or pale-pink wrap top, add a long lavender skirt, then a pink or red outer robe with wide sleeves and a fitted blue waistband on top. Hidden pins hold the layers if they shift. Wide sleeves drag in food and drinks, so I tuck a soft elastic inside each one at the wrist, which lets you push them up. A smooth high bun with a pink blossom comb, soft pink eyeshadow, defined brows and red lipstick. A folding fan or blossom-patterned pouch, white socks and simple black flats.
22. Mulan Warrior Costume

For the warrior look, armor-shaped clothing tells the story; you don't need a weapon at all. Dark trousers and a long-sleeved gray or navy tunic go under a green overshirt, with red-and-brown foam panels across the torso and shoulders. I cut the panels from craft foam, heat them gently with a hair dryer and shape them over a rounded surface so they curve with the body instead of sitting flat. Black hair in a high bun with a red ribbon, natural matte makeup, and a gold medallion, scroll or plush dragon. Leggings under the trousers for warmth, and brown calf-high boots.
23. Mulan Green Finale Costume

The green finale outfit gives you a graceful princess look without a ball gown or an elaborate wig. A pale-green wrap dress or long tunic with wide sleeves goes over a cream underdress, with a deep-blue waistband and a red sash tied neatly at the waist. Wrap garments open at the front when you sit, so I put a small snap or a safety pin on the inside of the overlap. Straight black hair loose or in a low ponytail, fresh makeup with softly lined eyes and a muted red lip. A folding fan, medallion or rolled scroll, then black flats or cloth slip-ons.
24. Mulan Modern Closet Costume

Her colors translate easily into everyday clothes: olive-green trousers, a cream wrap blouse, a cropped navy vest and a red belt or sash to tie the palette together. Black hair goes into a high ponytail with a red ribbon, or a sleek shoulder-length wig. Sharp liner and a berry lip. A small dragon plush, a fan or a gold medallion necklace makes sure the character reads; without one of those, it's simply a nice outfit. Brown ankle boots or black lace-ups. Everything here is ordinary clothing, so it handles school, work and a last-minute party equally well.
25. Tiana Green Lily Gown Costume

Tiana's lily gown is made of petals, and layering several shades of green is what makes it look like a flower rather than a green dress. Choose a fitted bodice with leaf-shaped details and a full skirt, and add a translucent overskirt or tulle petticoat for volume. If you're adding petals yourself, I cut them on the bias from a light satin, which makes the edges curl softly rather than lying flat. Dark hair in a high bun with a green tiara or flower clip. Gold-green eyeshadow, a berry lip, long pale-green gloves and a fine necklace. A white lily or a frog-shaped purse, and gold flats.
26. Tiana Blue Evening Gown Costume

The blue evening gown is sleeker and much simpler than the green one. A floor-length sky-blue gown with a fitted waist, narrow straps and a softly flared skirt, plus a pale stole or elbow gloves if you want coverage. Dark hair in an elegant low bun with a silver comb. Silver-blue eyeshadow, peach blush and a deep rose lip, with a strand of pearls. Narrow straps slip on a sloped shoulder, so I sew a small ribbon loop and snap inside each one to catch your bra strap. A silver clutch or an artificial lily, and silver flats or low blue heels.
27. Tiana Waitress Costume

The waitress uniform is the most comfortable Tiana, and the easiest to put together. A mint-green or pale-blue knee-length dress with short sleeves and a modest collar, a crisp white apron and a small matching headband. Dark hair in a neat bun or a low roll. The apron should be truly white and pressed flat, because a limp apron loses the uniform look; a quick spray of starch helps. Neutral eyes, warm blush and a raspberry lip. A light tray with artificial pastries rather than real food. White ankle socks and black nonslip shoes.
28. Tiana 1920s Party Costume

This 1920s look mixes the princess with period glamour. A mint, jade or emerald beaded dress at knee or mid-calf length, with fringe and geometric beading that moves without feeling fragile. Beaded dresses are heavy and the threads break easily, so I check the hem and underarms for loose beads before wearing and tie off anything wobbly. Dark hair in a low bun with soft finger waves around the face, and a slim jeweled headband. Gold eyeshadow and a berry lip, pearl earrings and long gloves. A beaded bag or a white lily, then gold T-strap shoes or low block heels.
29. Rapunzel Purple Dress Costume

Rapunzel's classic dress is lavender or purple with a lace-up bodice, short puff sleeves and an ankle-length skirt, ideally with pink ribbon trim and a soft floral pattern. Her hair matters most. An extra-long golden wig in loose waves, kept short enough to clear the floor, with small artificial flowers scattered through it. Long synthetic wigs tangle at the ends first, so I braid the bottom third loosely when traveling and undo it on arrival. Lavender eyeshadow, peach blush, a few freckles and glossy pink lips. A plush chameleon or a foam frying pan, and pink or purple flats.
30. Rapunzel Flower Braid Costume

Here the braid becomes the centerpiece. Choose a purple dress with a lace-up bodice, puff sleeves and a gathered skirt, then style a long golden wig into one thick side braid and add pink, white, yellow and lavender flowers from the crown down to the end. Heavier flowers need hidden clips; silk flowers with the plastic stems snipped off weigh far less. Braid it loosely, because a tight braid on a long wig pulls the whole wig sideways. Purple eyeshadow, peach blush, freckles and rosy gloss. A lantern purse or plush chameleon, and pale-pink flats with ribbon ankle ties.
31. Rapunzel Short Brown Hair Costume

The short brown bob is her look from the end of the story, and it's far easier to wear than a long wig, especially on a warm night or a busy one. Keep the purple dress: a lavender midi or ankle-length gown with puff sleeves, a lace-up front and pink trim. The wig should be chin length with choppy, uneven ends. Most bob wigs come too neat, so I texture the ends by snipping small notches into them. A tiny flower clip near one temple, purple liner, warm blush and a few freckles. A plush chameleon or small sun pendant, and purple flats or brown lace-up boots.
32. Rapunzel Modern Closet Costume

For a closet version, wear a lavender puff-sleeve blouse with a high-waisted purple midi skirt, a pink ribbon belt and, on cool days, a floral cardigan. Long blonde hair goes into a side braid with a few small flowers, or use a manageable braided wig. Lilac eyeshadow, freckles and glossy pink lips. A purple crossbody bag with a gold sun charm, or a plush chameleon clipped to the strap. The sun charm is the subtle detail that fans spot. Lavender sneakers or pink flats. It's school-friendly and comfortable, and the color palette, braid and flowers keep the character clear.
33. Merida Teal Adventure Costume

Merida's adventure dress is a long teal gown with fitted sleeves and simple gold trim at the neckline, cut relaxed enough to move in. The wig makes or breaks her. A full, curly copper-red wig reaching the shoulders or upper back, and you should never brush it; I finger-separate the curls and mist them with water to bring them back. Light foundation, natural brows, freckles and a soft rose lip. A plaid pouch or a target-patterned accessory in place of a bow. Brown lace-up boots for footing, and a dark green cloak for outdoor events.
34. Merida Formal Gown Costume

The formal gown is a deep teal or navy floor-length dress with wide sleeves, gold embroidery and a fitted waist, with a cream underlayer showing at the neckline and cuffs. Gold embroidered trim sold by the yard is the shortcut; sew it on by hand with small stitches along both edges so it doesn't twist. A copper curly wig pulled partly back from the face, with the rest left full. Soft eyes, faux freckles and a muted berry lip. A narrow gold circlet and a tartan clutch. Brown flats or low boots stay hidden under the long skirt.
35. Moana Island Adventure Costume

Moana's adventure outfit is a red patterned wrap top and a cream tiered skirt with woven-look trim. Pick printed fabrics with ocean and natural shapes, and keep the costume focused on the animated character's colors rather than copying real ceremonial dress from a living culture. A textured sash at the waist and long dark wavy hair worn loose. Sun-kissed makeup with bronze eyeshadow and a coral lip. A blue-green heart-shaped stone pendant is the key prop, and it's easy to make from polymer clay. Flat brown sandals, with footless tights in your own skin tone if it's cold.
36. Moana Ceremonial Costume

The longer formal version pairs an ankle-length cream skirt with a rich red top and layered natural textures. A fitted short-sleeve blouse with printed red panels, an ankle-length skirt trimmed with tan fringe or embroidered ribbon, and a wide woven-look sash, without using real cultural artifacts. Long dark hair in loose waves with a cream flower behind one ear, bronze eyeshadow and coral lipstick. The blue-green pendant again, and a seashell pouch or a soft cardboard oar sign with rounded edges. I'd hem the skirt to just clear your sandals so the fringe doesn't catch underfoot. Neutral sandals or brown flats.
37. Raya Adventure Costume

Raya's outfit is practical layers in tan, olive, blue and rust. Fitted brown trousers with a mustard tunic and a structured green vest, then a long blue cape or sleeveless coat falling below the knees. A wide brown belt and a small crossbody satchel make her look ready to travel. Long capes twist around your legs when you walk; a few small weights sewn into the hem corners keep it hanging straight. Dark hair in a loose braid with face-framing pieces, natural matte makeup. A rolled map or a blue gemstone prop instead of a weapon, and brown knee-high boots.
38. Raya Blue Formal Costume

The formal version is softer: a long blue wrap dress with wide sleeves, a fitted waist and subtle gold edging, worn over matching trousers if you want extra comfort and coverage. Dark hair in a polished half-up style with a small gold comb. Bronze eyeshadow, defined lashes and a rose-brown lip, with gold earrings and a blue stone pendant. A scroll or blue gemstone prop. I like the trousers-under-dress option a lot for this one, because the wrap skirt can open as you walk and trousers make that a non-issue. Brown flats or gold slippers. It suits indoor parties and princess groups.
39. Elsa Ice Gown Costume

Elsa's ice gown is a fitted icy-blue dress covered in sequins, rhinestones or snowflake shapes, with a translucent cape attached at the shoulders. Hem the cape so it skims the floor without touching it; a dragging cape collects dirt and gets stepped on. A side slit only if it's comfortable and right for the event. Style a platinum wig into a thick side braid, pulling the plaits apart slightly so the braid looks full. Silver-blue eyeshadow, cool pink blush and a berry lip. A snowflake wand or crystal clutch, silver flats, and a rhinestone comb in place of a crown.
40. Elsa Coronation Costume

Her coronation look uses dark green, black, plum and gold instead of ice blue, and it stands apart from the many blue Elsas at any party. A fitted dark-green gown with long black sleeves and a floor-length skirt, plus a plum cape with gold trim. A platinum wig in a smooth braided bun at the back of the head, with a small gold crown above it. A heavy bun can tug a wig backwards, so I pin the bun through the wig cap into my own hair. Plum eyeshadow and a berry lip. A gold orb purse or folded gloves, then black flats or low gold heels.
41. Elsa White Spirit Gown Costume

The white gown is light and flowing, in white and pale lavender. A fitted white dress with translucent sleeves and subtle crystal patterns, at ankle or floor length, with a sheer cape split into two soft panels that move behind you. A long platinum wig worn loose with the sides pulled back. White shows every mark, so I carry a stain pen and keep makeup off the neckline by putting the dress on before the foundation goes on, with a scarf over it while I finish. Pearly eyeshadow, soft pink blush, a few rhinestones near the temples. A crystal accessory, silver flats or white ankle boots.
42. Anna Coronation Costume

Anna's coronation dress is a black fitted bodice over a full green skirt with colorful florals, with a cream blouse underneath. Floral printed fabric is easier to find than embroidered, and from a few feet away the effect is nearly the same. Add gold piping around the bodice and a small pendant at the collar. Auburn hair in a smooth braided updo with a green ribbon through the back, and a small gold crown on top. Green-gold eyeshadow, freckles and a rosy lip. A light tulle underskirt gives volume. Black ballet flats or low green heels. It pairs well with an icy-blue Elsa.
43. Anna Travel Costume

Her travel outfit is built for cold weather, which makes it ideal for trick-or-treating. A long-sleeved blue blouse under a fitted black bodice with floral embroidery, a full royal-blue skirt and a magenta cape with dark trim. Two braids, with a pale streak near the front if you like. I make the streak with a strip of white clip-in hair rather than spray, which flakes off. Soft purple eyeshadow, freckles and berry lip balm. A satchel or a plush reindeer. Black tights under the skirt and sturdy black ankle or calf boots.
44. Anna Winter Costume

The winter look is darker and more grown-up: a long black or charcoal dress with gold and rust trim at the neck and waist, a cropped purple, plum or black velvet jacket over it, and a matching cape for extra warmth. Velvet crushes where you sit, so steam it the morning of the event and hang it rather than folding it in a bag. Auburn hair in a half-up twist with waves down the back, warm brown eyes, freckles and a deep berry lip. A small travel bag or a plush snowman. Black tights and dark lace-up boots.
45. Kida Crystal Princess Costume

Kida's look is pale blue, white and metallic, and streamlined rather than full-skirted. A fitted light-blue sleeveless dress, or a blue top with a knee-length skirt and opaque shorts underneath. Patterned panels at the waist and silver armbands made from craft foam, which I line with felt so they don't stick to bare skin. A long straight white wig with side-swept bangs. Icy blue eyeshadow, highlighter, defined brows and a neutral pink lip, plus simple blue geometric accents drawn on with cosmetic-grade makeup, patch-tested first. A glowing crystal prop or pendant, and white sandals or silver flats.
Long Wigs, Braids and Bobs That Hold Up
With princesses, the hair often does more identifying than the dress. A red wig says Ariel, a platinum braid says Elsa, a black bob says Snow White. It's also the piece most likely to look tired by the end of the night.
Before you wear it
Take the wig out of its bag a few days early, shake it out and let it hang so the packing kinks relax. Put it on over a wig cap and pin the cap to your own hair at the crown and behind each ear. Cut bangs or a fringe while it's on your head, a little at a time.
Curly, long and braided wigs
Never brush a curly wig like Merida's; separate the curls with your fingers. For long straight wigs, comb from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb. Braided wigs stay tidier if you braid loosely and secure the end with a clear elastic, then hide it under a ribbon or flower.
During the night
Synthetic fiber frizzes near heat, so keep clear of ovens, candles and fire pits, and don't use a regular curling iron on it. If the wig starts to shift, two crossed bobby pins through the wig and cap usually fix it.
Which Princesses Work for School or the Office
Many schools and workplaces ask for costumes that are easy to move in and don't include masks or anything resembling a weapon. A good number of the looks here already fit those rules.
- Built from normal clothes: Snow White's cottage outfit, Cinderella's maid dress, Ariel's and Belle's village dresses, Tiana's waitress uniform, and the Mulan and Rapunzel closet versions.
- Swap the prop: Merida's bow, Mulan's sword and Raya's blade become a target pouch, a medallion and a gemstone, which every version above already suggests.
- Save for evening events: the full gowns, beaded 1920s Tiana and long caped versions, which need room to move.
Three Details Per Princess Are Enough
Whether you go for a full gown or a closet version, the costumes that read best focus on a few details per character rather than copying every seam. Pick the princess whose colors, hair and dress shape suit you and the event, then put your effort into the wig, the shoes and one clear prop. A well-styled wig and the right accent color can make an inexpensive dress convincing. Keep skirts, capes and braids at lengths you can walk in, and choose light accessories you won't mind carrying all night. A ball gown, an adventure outfit and a modern closet look can all be equally good, provided you can move, sit and enjoy yourself in it.
