Blonde hair, real, dyed or from a wig, opens up a huge number of characters, and it saves you a lot of work because the hair is often what people recognise first. Below are movie characters, fairytale girls, superheroes, pop stars, retro decades and a few fantasy ideas of my own. Each one covers the outfit, hair, makeup, accessories and shoes you can stand in. Many come together from closet basics, thrift finds and a little craft foam; a few are a good excuse for a big gown. Change the colours, lengths and shapes to suit your body, your comfort and the event you're going to.

Keeping Your Face From Washing Out Under Blonde Hair
The most common thing I see with a new blonde wig is a face that suddenly looks tired. Brows, lashes and lips that look normal with darker hair fade next to platinum or golden fibre. A few small adjustments fix it.
- Brows: if yours are dark and the wig is pale, brush a tinted brow gel one or two shades lighter through them. If yours are very fair, fill them slightly so they don't disappear.
- Lashes: mascara matters more under blonde hair. Brown-black looks softer than jet black on very pale wigs, especially for Marilyn, Cinderella and Elsa.
- Colour near the face: a little more blush than you'd normally wear keeps you from looking flat in photos, because light hair reflects onto the skin.
- Lips: pick the lip first for the character, then check it next to the wig in daylight. A red that looks right with your own hair can look orange beside golden blonde.
If you can, try the wig on with your makeup a few days before. It's much easier to adjust a lip shade at home than in a bathroom mirror at the party.
1. Elle Woods Pink Suit Costume

Elle Woods is the blonde costume I suggest most for office parties, because it's really just a pink suit worn with total confidence. Choose a fitted pink blazer with a matching knee-length skirt or tailored trousers over a pale pink blouse, plus nude pumps or pink flats. Smooth, bouncy blonde hair matters more than anything else, so use a wig if yours won't hold a blowout. Rosy blush, mascara, gloss and soft eyes keep it fresh. A small pink bag, a pretend law textbook and a stuffed toy dog do the explaining, with studs and pink sunglasses. If the two pinks don't match exactly, keep the paler one near your face.
2. Barbie Pink Cowgirl Costume

Pink cowgirl Barbie is bold and fun. Wear a pink Western vest over a white fitted top, with matching flares, a midi skirt or shorts with opaque tights. White cowboy boots are the signature, with a pink cowboy hat and star earrings. Loose curls or a bouncy high ponytail suit it, plus bright pink lipstick, shimmery shadow and rosy blush for the doll finish. A small white belt bag holds your phone without spoiling the outfit. If you add rhinestone trim to the vest and hat, use a proper gem glue rather than hot glue; hot-glued stones pop off as soon as the fabric bends.
3. Glinda Pink Gown Costume

This Glinda is a fan-made version built around a soft pink floor-length gown. Look for layered tulle, puff sleeves or a sparkly fabric for the fairytale shape, and wear silver ballet flats underneath so you can walk all night. Set blonde hair in structured curls and pin the front sections back. Keep the makeup glowing rather than stagey: pearly shadow, pink blush, mascara and gloss. A tall silver crown, a star wand and small crystal earrings finish it. A tall crown wobbles on a plain band, so I stitch it onto a wide headband and add two combs underneath. A pink tulle midi is the easier swap for a full gown.
4. Cinderella Blue Gown Costume

Cinderella comes down to a pale blue gown and a blonde updo. Pick a comfortable full-length dress with a fitted bodice, soft sleeves and a flowing skirt, white gloves and clear or silver low heels that hint at glass slippers. Sweep your hair into a smooth bun, leave a few soft pieces at the face and set a blue satin headband behind the hairline. Icy blue shadow, rosy cheeks and pink lipstick suit it, with a silver choker and a small clock-shaped purse. Clear plastic heels look right but are often stiff and slippery, so I scuff the soles with sandpaper and add gel pads before anyone wears them out.
5. Alice Blue Dress Costume

Alice is a light blue knee-length dress under a crisp white pinafore apron. Short puff sleeves give the clearest shape, though a blue blouse with a flared skirt works too. White ankle socks and black Mary Jane flats are right for the character and comfortable. Wear blonde hair straight or softly curled with a wide black ribbon or headband near the crown, and keep makeup to mascara, pink blush and a rosy lip. A teacup purse or a white rabbit plush is the prop. It adjusts easily for adults, teens or kids by changing the skirt length. If you can sew, a pinafore is a simple first project: two rectangles, a waistband and straps.
6. Tinker Bell Green Fairy Costume

Tinker Bell is a bright green fit-and-flare dress with a petal-cut skirt. For more coverage, add nude tights or a sheer green shrug. Green ballet flats become fairy shoes with fluffy white pom-poms clipped or stitched on the toes. A neat, round high bun tied with green ribbon is essential, and I use a foam bun form to keep the shape. Gold shimmer on the lids, peach blush and a glossy pink lip suit her. Light translucent wings, a small drawstring pouch and a star wand finish it. Soft fabric wings sit closer to the back than rigid ones, which matters in a crowded room.
7. Rapunzel Purple Dress Costume

Rapunzel lives or dies on the hair, whether that's your own, extensions or a braided wig. Choose a lavender or purple maxi with puff sleeves, ribbon details and a lace-up bodice, with purple flats that stay hidden under the skirt. Weave small artificial flowers through a loose side braid and pin each one. Soft brown liner, peach blush, optional freckles and pink gloss keep her young. A foam frying pan is a good prop if the venue allows it; otherwise a plush chameleon or a floral purse. A very long braid weighs a lot by the end of the night, so I anchor it with a few pins at the nape rather than letting it hang from a clip.
8. Elsa Ice Queen Costume

Elsa is an icy blue gown plus a big platinum side braid. Choose a sequined or satin maxi with sheer sleeves and a detachable pale blue cape, and silver flats or low block heels. Braid the hair loosely and pull the sections gently wider for volume, adding small rhinestone pins if you like. Silver-blue shadow, defined lashes, cool pink blush and a berry-pink lip suit her, with snowflake earrings and a crystal-style clutch. A blue midi, a sheer cape and silver sneakers make a casual version. Sheer capes slide off the shoulders, so I attach mine with small snaps hidden under the neckline rather than just tying it.
9. Princess Aurora Pink Dress Costume

Aurora pairs a romantic pink dress with soft blonde curls. Pick a floor-length gown with an off-shoulder neckline, a structured bodice and a full skirt; for more coverage, add a fitted pale pink top underneath or choose long sleeves. Gold flats match the crown and stay practical. Smooth flowing curls with volume at the crown, champagne shadow, pink blush, mascara and a rose lip complete the face, with a simple gold crown, a fine necklace and a storybook clutch. Off-shoulder necklines creep up all evening, so a little silicone grip tape inside the band keeps them in place without constant tugging.
10. Goldilocks Cottage Dress Costume

Goldilocks is a simple, comfortable costume you can build from vintage-style pieces. Start with a blue, yellow or floral cottage dress with puff sleeves and a full knee-length skirt, a white apron and cream tights for warmth. Brown Mary Janes or lace-up ankle boots suit it. Defined ringlets tied back at the sides with blue ribbons are the main feature, plus rosy blush, a few freckles, mascara and tinted balm. A basket with three light wooden bowls or three small plush bears tells the story. It's an easy pick for school events and family parties. Ringlets fall fast on straight hair, so I set them with small foam rollers overnight.
11. Sandy Black Outfit Costume

Sandy's final Grease look is a great last-minute choice, since you may already own the main pieces. Wear a fitted black top with high-waisted black trousers or opaque leggings, a cropped faux-leather jacket and a wide black belt with a metal buckle. Red flats, low heels or clean sneakers give the colour pop. Curl the hair into full waves and lift the front for volume. Winged liner, rosy cheeks and a bright red lip finish it, with small hoops and cat-eye sunglasses. Shiny leggings beat real leather trousers for comfort, and they look the same in photos. It's easy to adjust for any temperature or venue.
12. Cher Plaid School Outfit Costume

Cher's yellow plaid set is the outfit people picture first. Wear the blazer and pleated skirt over a white blouse or sweater vest, with opaque knee-high socks or tights. White Mary Janes, loafers or clean sneakers suit it. Long, straight, smooth hair with a centre part is key. The makeup is fresh and very 1990s: neutral shadow, peach blush, mascara and a brown-pink lip. A mini backpack, a toy flip phone or a fluffy pen makes the prop. If you can't find a matching set, a yellow cardigan over a plaid skirt in similar colours works. I'd straighten the hair last, right before leaving, because humidity undoes it fast.
13. Regina George Bunny Costume

Regina's bunny stage costume can be done in a tasteful, party-friendly way. Wear a white fitted top with a structured black skirt, opaque black tights and black ankle boots or block heels. White faux-fur wrist cuffs and a simple bunny-ear headband make the theme clear. Wear straight blonde hair with a smooth middle part, or a natural-looking long wig. A soft smoky eye, pink blush, mascara and a glossy nude-pink lip suit it, with a small black shoulder bag. For more coverage, swap the top for a white long-sleeve bodysuit or a tucked sweater. Keep the black and white clean; one off-white piece looks dingy next to bright white.
14. Sharpay Evans Pink Dress Costume

Sharpay is for anyone who loves rhinestones and a bit of drama. Wear a hot pink dress with a cropped sequined cardigan or sparkly jacket, plus metallic flats, pink block heels or glittery boots you can walk in. Smooth side-parted curls with one section held by a rhinestone clip suit her. Shimmery pink shadow, defined lashes, rosy blush and high-shine gloss do the face, with a star necklace, a glitter mic and a small pink bag. I'd stop at a few bold pieces. Pile on every accessory and the character gets lost in the clutter. It suits musical-themed parties and group costumes.
15. Hannah Montana Pop Star Costume

Hannah Montana is sparkly stagewear plus a long blonde wig with bangs. Layer a sequined jacket over a colourful plain top, then choose flared jeans, a pleated skirt with leggings or metallic trousers. Silver ankle boots or high-tops keep it wearable. Purple shadow, pink blush, gloss and a few face gems near the eyes give the stage feel, with a headset mic, star earrings and a glittery belt. A toy backstage pass on a lanyard is a fun DIY extra. Wigs with bangs often come too long; trim them a little at a time with sharp scissors held vertically, which leaves a softer edge than a straight cut.
16. Dolly Parton Country Singer Costume

Dolly Parton is all about rhinestones and big hair. Choose a rhinestone jacket, a bright blouse and flared trousers or a fringed midi, with white cowboy boots in a heel you can manage. The voluminous blonde wig is the defining piece; tease it gently at the crown, shape the curls and pin it securely before you leave. Sparkly shadow, defined lashes, rosy blush and bright pink lipstick suit the stage look, with big earrings, a glitter mic and a guitar-shaped purse. Keep it respectful by focusing on her clothes and hair rather than exaggerating her body. Tease synthetic wigs lightly, since heavy backcombing leaves knots that don't come out.
17. Marilyn Monroe White Dress Costume

Marilyn's white dress needs only a few pieces. Choose a knee-length white halter with a full pleated skirt, with a white camisole underneath if you want more coverage, and nude or white low heels or elegant flats. Set short blonde hair or a platinum wig into soft vintage curls with a deep side part. Black liner, full lashes, soft contour and a classic red lip complete her face, with crystal studs and a small white clutch. Let the shape, hair and makeup identify the look rather than relying on the famous pose. Halter straps dig into the neck after a few hours, so I add a strip of soft felt inside the strap. A light wrap helps on cool nights.
18. Taylor Swift Sparkling Stage Costume

A Taylor Swift-inspired stage look can capture the concert mood without copying one exact outfit. Wear a sparkly mini over opaque tights or with fitted shorts; a fringed dress, sequined romper or glitter two-piece all work. Rhinestone ankle boots or metallic sneakers keep you steady for dancing. Straight hair with bangs, loose curls or a low side part all suit it. A red lip, winged liner, subtle shimmer and a few face gems finish the face, plus a glitter mic and handmade friendship bracelets. A faux-fur jacket adds warmth between stops. Face gems lift off as you sweat, so I use a dot of lash glue rather than the sticker backing.
19. Lady Gaga Silver Pop Star Costume

A silver pop-star look borrows Lady Gaga's bold performance style while staying comfortable. Wear a structured metallic top with silver trousers, a knee-length skirt or a fitted jumpsuit, and a cropped geometric jacket for a stronger stage shape. Silver platform sneakers or low metallic boots give height without wobbling. Platinum hair can go in a blunt bob, a sleek ponytail or sculpted waves. Graphic silver shadow, strong black liner, highlighted cheeks and a pale pink lip suit it, with angular sunglasses and a sparkly mic. Metallic fabric has no give and creases sharply at the elbows and knees, so fit it with a little room and steam it on low.
20. Sabrina Carpenter Heart Dress Costume

Sabrina Carpenter's playful style starts with a pastel dress with a sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, with shorts under a short hem. White platforms, glittery ankle boots or low block heels suit the stage feel. Long curls with full curtain bangs and lifted roots are the key, so I'd use a wig if your bangs aren't already cut. Shimmery lids, defined lashes, pink blush placed high and a glossy berry-pink lip do the face, with heart earrings, a rhinestone mic and a small glitter bag. A sheer pastel shrug adds warmth without hiding the dress. It's a current pop-star idea that stays sweet.
21. Daenerys Targaryen Blue Dress Costume

Daenerys starts with platinum hair in detailed braids. Wear a long dusty blue or gray wrap dress with structured shoulders, a high neck and a flowing skirt, and add a textured cape or draped scarf instead of armour. Flat gray boots keep you comfortable. Cool, natural makeup suits her: soft brows, taupe shadow, pale pink blush and a muted rose lip. A silver dragon brooch and a small plush dragon are safe props. If her full braid pattern feels like too much, braid several small sections and pin them together at the back of the head. I do the braids on the wig on a foam head the day before, not on the night.
22. Luna Lovegood School Costume

Luna's school outfit is comfortable and made from ordinary pieces. Wear a white button-down under a gray sweater vest and a black robe, with a striped tie, a dark pleated skirt or trousers and opaque tights. Black loafers or lace-ups keep it practical. Loose, slightly messy blonde waves suit her, with minimal makeup: glowing skin, rosy cheeks and a pale pink balm. Handmade colourful glasses, mismatched earrings and a cork necklace are her signature details. Carry a pretend magazine or a schoolbook instead of a wand for venue rules. A black graduation gown from a thrift shop makes a cheap, warm robe that fits over a coat.
23. Harley Quinn Red And Blue Costume

For a blonde Harley Quinn, start with two high pigtails, one end tinted pink and the other blue with temporary colour. Wear a red-and-blue bomber over a white shirt, with colour-blocked trousers, a pleated skirt with tights, or shorts over leggings. Red and blue high-tops handle a busy night. Coordinating eye makeup, a red lip and a small heart on one cheek finish the face, with a heart bag and mismatched bracelets. Skip big props in crowds. Temporary hair colour transfers onto a white shirt, so I let it dry fully and keep the pigtails high enough that the coloured ends sit away from the collar.
24. Supergirl Blue And Red Costume

Supergirl is a royal blue fitted top, a red knee-length skirt and a cape. Find a top with a simple shield emblem, or cut a generic geometric shape from felt and stitch it on. Opaque nude or blue tights add warmth. Red knee-high boots give the classic look, but red ankle boots or sneakers are easier for long walks. Wear loose blonde curls and fresh makeup: defined lashes, rosy blush and a red-pink lip, with a gold belt and simple wrist cuffs. Hem the cape so it ends above the back of your knees; any lower and it gets stepped on, especially on stairs.
25. Captain Marvel Red And Blue Costume

Captain Marvel can be a fitted red-and-blue jumpsuit or matching athletic separates. A navy long-sleeve top and leggings with red stretch-fabric panels make a simple DIY version, with a gold star at the chest and a matching belt. Red ankle boots or supportive high-tops suit a lot of walking. Loose shoulder-length waves or a swept-back textured bob work for the hair, with simple strong makeup: warm brown shadow, mascara, defined brows and a neutral lip. Gold cuffs and a star crossbody finish it. When I sew panels onto stretch fabric, I use a narrow zigzag stitch so the seams stretch with the leggings instead of snapping.
26. Black Canary Costume With Leather Jacket

Black Canary is a wearable look built on a black faux-leather jacket over a fitted black top. Add high-waisted black trousers, a knee-length skirt or tailored shorts over opaque tights, and black combat boots. Full blonde waves, real or wig, are essential. A smoky gray eye, black liner, soft peach blush and a muted red lip suit her, with black fingerless gloves, a gold choker and a small bird pin. The all-black outfit plus the hair carry the character, so skip action props. It's a good outdoor pick, because the jacket and tights layer over thermals without changing anything you can see.
27. Spider Gwen Hooded Costume

Spider-Gwen comes together from a white hooded top, black leggings and pink-and-turquoise accent panels. Choose stretchy athletic pieces and add a light white vest or cropped hoodie over the base. Turquoise flats, pink sneakers or white high-tops finish the colours. Let a short blonde bob, yours or a wig, show clearly under the hood. Clean makeup works best: pink liner, defined lashes and a soft rose lip, plus a small spiderweb drawn near one eye instead of a mask. Turquoise wristbands and a white crossbody finish it. Hoods push bob wigs forward, so I pin the wig at the crown before pulling the hood up.
28. Princess Peach Pink Gown Costume

Princess Peach starts with a full pink gown with puff sleeves and a darker pink overskirt. A tea-length version moves more easily, or wear floor-length with comfortable pink flats. Smooth, rounded blonde curls, plus side-swept bangs if you use a wig, suit her. The makeup is cheerful: blue shadow, long lashes, rosy cheeks and glossy pink lips. A gold crown with colourful faux gems, blue earrings, white gloves and a star purse finish it. Fix the crown to a headband or combs so it stays put. Puff sleeves deflate by evening, so a small ball of tulle tucked inside each one keeps them round.
29. Princess Zelda Purple Gown Costume

Princess Zelda is a long purple, white or blue gown under a fitted decorative bodice. Add a gold belt and a front apron panel with hand-painted geometric details; fabric paint on cotton holds up better than marker. Brown or gold flat boots suit the fantasy setting. Wear long soft waves and pull two narrow front sections back under a gold headband or small crown. Lavender shadow, soft brows, pink blush and a rose lip work well. Pointed ears are optional; if you wear them, choose light ones and attach with a little spirit gum or tape. Gold cuffs, a triangle pendant and an embroidered pouch finish it.
30. Samus Aran Orange Armor Costume

Samus's colours can inspire a light costume without heavy armour. Start with an orange fitted jumpsuit or a matching long-sleeve top and trousers, then attach flexible red shoulder panels, green chest details and yellow foam accents with removable fasteners. Supportive red or orange boots balance the colour. A high ponytail with a simple wrap suits her, plus sharp liner, bronzed cheeks and a neutral lip. A green wrist cuff from light craft foam stands in for her gear. I use hook-and-loop strips for the panels so they come off for sitting. EVA foam takes heat-shaping into a curve with a hair dryer, which flat craft foam won't.
31. Buffy Summers Leather Jacket Costume

Buffy is an easy blonde costume for anyone who prefers real clothes. Wear a fitted red or black top under a cropped faux-leather jacket, with dark straight-leg jeans or black trousers and sturdy ankle boots. A bouncy shoulder-length blowout with face-framing layers is the main detail. Late-1990s makeup suits her: brown liner, soft shimmer, peach blush and a muted berry lip. A cross-style necklace, a small vintage book and a compact bag finish it. Skip the stakes so you're welcome anywhere. Fans will spot it, and every piece goes back into your wardrobe afterwards.
32. Veronica Mars Detective Costume

Veronica Mars mixes casual student clothes with detective props. Start with a striped top, dark jeans and a fitted utility jacket, plus brown ankle boots or low sneakers. Shoulder-length straight hair with a side part, one side tucked behind the ear, suits her. Natural makeup works: mascara, light brows, peach blush and tinted balm. A small camera, a notebook and a press-style badge on a lanyard tell the story, and a crossbody messenger bag holds your things. It's the costume I point to for low effort and for places with practical dress rules, like school or work. The camera is the prop that makes people place her.
33. M3GAN Beige Dress Costume

M3GAN is a beige A-line dress over a striped long-sleeve blouse, with a big striped bow at the neck and cream tights. Black or brown Mary Janes give the doll finish. Style a blonde wig or your own hair into a smooth shoulder-length shape with a precise centre part. Keep the makeup stylised but not scary: even foundation, peach blush, defined lashes, a little lower liner and a rosy nude lip. White gloves and a small neutral bag are enough. Stiff posture and a blank face do the rest. The bow has to stand out crisply, so I iron fusible interfacing to the back of the ribbon before tying it.
34. Tiffany Valentine White Dress Costume

Tiffany Valentine's look can stay glamorous without graphic details. Wear a white midi under a cropped black faux-leather jacket, black tights and heeled ankle boots or chunky loafers. A big platinum bob with dark roots is the key; a wig is the easy route, and a little brown eyeshadow pressed into the parting fakes the roots. A smoky gray eye, bold liner, sculpted brows and a deep berry lip suit her, with a black ribbon choker, a heart pendant and a small bag. Paint a heart on the bag rather than your skin. The sweet white dress against the tough jacket makes the character, and it layers well for October.
35. Enid Sinclair Colorful School Costume

Enid's look is blonde hair with pastels and mixed patterns. Wear a striped knit sweater under a lavender or blue blazer, a pleated midi, colourful tights and pink or purple platform sneakers. Style loose waves with washable pink on one side and blue on the other. Pastel shadow, defined lashes, rosy blush and pink gloss suit her, with small colourful clips at the temples and each nail a different pastel. A rainbow crossbody and a striped scarf finish it. Washable hair colour shows far brighter on light blonde than on darker hair, so if yours is golden, clip in coloured extensions instead.
36. Sarah Sanderson Purple Witch Costume

Sarah Sanderson starts with layered purple and burgundy. Combine a corset-style vest, a peasant blouse and a flowing maxi skirt, with every layer securely fastened. Striped tights and low lace-up boots go underneath. Long, slightly messy blonde waves with small braids at the temples suit her, plus lavender shadow, rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a berry lip. A textured cape, a velvet drawstring pouch and a light broom finish it. Keep it playful rather than ritualistic. Real corsets dig in when you sit, so I'd pick a lace-up vest with some stretch in the side panels for a long party.
37. Blonde Viking Shield Maiden Costume

A Viking-inspired costume is a long neutral tunic under a faux-fur-trimmed brown vest. Add dark leggings, a wide braided belt and flat brown boots for walking. Several loose braids with thin leather-look cords woven through suit it, with earthy makeup: bronze shadow, defined brows, peach blush and a neutral lip. A soft faux-fur wrap adds warmth. A round foam shield painted muted blue and brown is a good prop, or wear a circular brooch instead. Skip horned helmets and weapons. Faux fur sheds at cut edges, so I cut it from the back with a craft knife through the backing only, then shake it outside.
38. Blonde 1960s Go-Go Dancer Costume

A 1960s go-go look starts with a geometric mini over opaque white tights. A shift shape in orange, pink, blue or black-and-white blocking suits the era. White knee-high boots are the classic choice, but low block heels or ankle boots last longer. A smooth flipped bob, a high ponytail or a round bouffant held with a wide headband all work. Graphic liner, pale shadow, pink blush and a light coral lip finish the face, with big round earrings and a patent bag. A cropped white jacket adds warmth. Bouffants collapse without backcombing, so tease the crown, smooth the top layer over it and set it with spray.
39. Blonde 1970s Disco Costume

A 1970s disco look is shine and movement. Wear a sequined halter or a metallic long-sleeve blouse with high-waisted flares, or a sparkly jumpsuit that does the whole job in one piece. Platforms with stable soles or metallic sneakers are safer on the dance floor. Feathered waves with volume at the crown suit the decade, along with gold shadow, soft liner, bronzed blush and glossy peach lips. Big hoops, a wide belt and a small mirrored bag finish it. Pick smooth fabrics that won't scratch or snag on decorations. Feathered hair is easiest with a big round brush, rolling each side away from the face.
40. Blonde Sun Fairy Costume

I'll finish with an original idea: a golden sun fairy that makes blonde hair part of the colour scheme. Wear a yellow or gold dress with a layered knee-length skirt and a fitted bodice, nude tights and gold flats. Soft waves or a loose crown braid with tiny yellow flowers suit it. Gold shadow, warm peach blush, a little highlighter and a coral-pink lip do the face. Light gold wings, a sunburst headband and a star purse finish the theme. Keep glitter away from the eyes and use biodegradable shimmer where you can. Because it's not a named character, nobody can tell you it's wrong, which makes it easy to adapt for school or a parade.
Emblems, Crowns and Shields Made From Foam and Felt
Several of these looks need a small made piece: a chest emblem, a crown, a shield, a wrist cuff. None of them need special tools, and getting the material right is what keeps them in one piece all night.
Felt for anything on fabric
Felt emblems, letters and dots look neat, but glue alone lets go once the fabric stretches or gets warm, and it peels fastest on polyester. Stitch around the edge with a running stitch in matching thread, or use a fusible web ironed on first and then a few stitches at the corners. On stretch tops, keep the emblem smaller than you think so it doesn't pucker.
Foam for crowns, shields and armour bits
- Use thin craft foam for flat details and thicker EVA foam for anything that curves, like a shoulder panel or shield.
- Warm EVA foam with a hair dryer and bend it over a bowl or your knee; it holds the curve once it cools.
- Seal foam with a few coats of white glue or a flexible primer before painting, or the paint soaks in and cracks.
- Join foam with contact cement rather than hot glue. Hot glue goes brittle in cold air and pops apart on an outdoor night.
For crowns, glue or stitch the foam onto a sturdy headband rather than relying on an elastic loop. A crown that sits on a band stays level when you turn your head; one on elastic tilts to the side within an hour.
A Good Blonde Wig Opens Up Most of This List
The blonde costumes that work best treat the hair as part of the character, not an afterthought. Your own hair, a temporary colour or a well-pinned wig all work. Put your effort into the signature clothes, shoes you can stand in, the props people recognise and makeup you can keep up all night. Closet basics cover the last-minute TV and film looks, while gowns, capes and sparkly separates suit a bigger night. Adjust anything for your comfort, the venue and how much coverage you want. Between the characters, heroes, decades and fantasy ideas here, there's a fit for most parties.
