A costume is more fun with your best friend beside you, but only if both of you end up with an outfit worth wearing. The pairs that work best are easy to read, comfortable for a whole night and balanced, so nobody is stuck as the plain half of the joke. Below are forty duos: screen characters, throwback eras, food jokes, fantasy opposites and a few last-minute pairs, each with the clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes I'd put together for both people. Most can be built from thrift finds and basics, and I'd adjust colours, coverage and footwear to suit each of you rather than copying every detail.

Splitting a Duo So Neither of You Is the Sidekick
The pairs that disappoint people usually fail in planning, not sewing. One friend ends up with the star costume and the other with a beige afterthought, or the two outfits are styled so differently that nobody sees the connection. I work through the same few steps with any pair.
- Agree on the effort level first. If one of you will sew and the other only wants to shop a closet, choose a pair where one half is simpler by design, like detective and clue or beekeeper and bee.
- Give each half something to show off. The plainer costume gets the better prop, the bolder wig or the funnier label.
- Share one colour or one accessory. Matching bracelets, belts, brooches or a repeated print connect two looks far better than near-identical outfits.
- Stand side by side in your full outfits and take a phone photo from across the room before the night. If you can't tell it's a pair at that distance, enlarge the shared detail.
- Decide who carries what. Two big props mean four full hands and no room for a drink or a phone.
Height and build matter less than people fear. Most of these pairs read through colour and one signature piece, so a tall friend and a short friend can wear the same idea comfortably. Where a pair has an obvious height order, like the plumber brothers, let the taller person take that role and nobody needs to explain anything.
1. Wednesday And Enid Bestie Costume

These two work because they're opposites, so each of you gets a strong look rather than half of one. Wednesday is a black collared midi dress, opaque tights and chunky black loafers, with a dark wig or your own hair in two sleek braids, a pale base, softly shadowed eyes and a neutral lip; an old hardcover book is plenty as a prop. Enid is all colour: a striped sweater or pastel cardigan, a pleated skirt, bright knee socks and platform sneakers, plus a blonde wig with pink and blue tips, lots of clips, glossy makeup and a fuzzy backpack. Braids are where Wednesday goes wrong; tie them tight and low behind the ears, or they look like pigtails.
2. Glinda And Elphaba Bestie Costume

Pink against green carries this pairing across any room. Glinda starts with a blush or bubblegum tulle dress, glittery flats, a silver crown and a star-tipped wand, with blonde curls and rosy, shimmery makeup. Elphaba wears a long black dress, a structured cape, a pointed hat and comfortable black boots, with a dark braid or loose waves. Green face makeup needs patience: patch-test it on the wrist a day ahead, apply it in thin layers with a damp sponge, and set it well with translucent powder, because it transfers onto the cape collar and anyone you hug. Matching crystal earrings or brooches make the two look like a set while the colours stay opposite.
3. Cher And Dionne Bestie Costume

The plaid suits make this one, so I'd spend your effort there. Cher wears a yellow plaid blazer and matching skirt over a white top, with knee-high socks, black Mary Janes, a long blonde wig, fresh pink makeup, a mini backpack and an oversized pretend phone. Dionne wears a black-and-white plaid skirt suit over a bright red top, knee socks and platforms, with a wide-brim black hat, long braids, sculpted brows and glossy lips. Coordinate the two plaids without making them the same; similar scale checks look like a pair, different scale looks accidental. Tiny notebooks with joke class schedules finish the school-day theme.
4. Daphne And Velma Bestie Costume

This mystery pair is easy and comfortable, and the colour blocking does all the explaining. Daphne wears a purple dress with a lighter purple headband, a green neck scarf, pink tights and purple flats, plus a long red wig in smooth waves and lavender shadow. Velma needs an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red Mary Janes, with a short brown bob wig, square black glasses, freckles and natural makeup. A magnifying glass, notebook or cardboard clue card is the only prop. If the wigs are new, trim Velma's fringe to just above the glasses frame; out of the bag, most bob wigs sit too long and hide her eyes.
5. Romy And Michele Bestie Costume

These two need sparkle and a sense of humour. Two short satin dresses carry the party look: metallic blue for one friend, glossy pink for the other, in a simple shift or halter shape you can dance in. Silver platforms, small rhinestone bags and matching friendship bracelets go with them. One of you wears a sleek blonde bob wig, and the other puts blonde hair up in a high ponytail with face-framing strands. Frosted shadow, shiny gloss and tiny face gems feel right for the era. Satin shows every crease and sweat mark, so I'd hang the dresses in a steamy bathroom before wearing, then carry homemade reunion name tags to set up the joke.
6. Thelma And Louise Bestie Costume

This is a denim pair, and almost all of it is thrift-friendly. One friend wears high-waisted jeans, a sleeveless white blouse knotted at the waist, a patterned neck scarf and brown ankle boots, with auburn curls and red lipstick. The other wears straight-leg jeans, a white tank, an open denim shirt and sturdy Western boots, with a big brown wig, neutral makeup and aviators. Folded road maps, canvas overnight bags and vintage-style car keys are harmless props. I'd choose two slightly different washes of denim, faded on one and darker on the other, so you don't blur into one blue shape in photos.
7. Mario And Luigi Bestie Costume

Mario and Luigi are a pair anyone can wear, whatever their build or gender. Red and green long-sleeve shirts, matching caps, blue overalls, white gloves and brown work boots or sneakers make the base. Instead of buying hats, cut felt circles with the initials and stitch them on; glued felt peels off cotton caps once they flex. Tuck your hair neatly under each cap and draw on washable moustaches with a makeup pencil if you want them. Cardboard plumbing tools, plush mushrooms or gold-painted foam coins are safe props. Pick overalls with adjustable straps and roomy legs, and Luigi should be a touch taller than Mario, so put the taller friend in green.
8. Sponge And Starfish Bestie Costume

The undersea pair is a cheap DIY with a lot of colour. The sponge wears a yellow T-shirt or boxy tunic, brown shorts, a white collar, striped knee socks and black lace-up shoes, plus a little yellow hair spray, rosy cheek circles and a light spatula. The starfish friend wears a pink top with lime-green shorts decorated with purple felt flowers, pink tights and green or pink sneakers, with a pointed pink felt headpiece and pink-toned makeup. Bubble wands or toy jellyfish help in photos. Coloured hair spray rubs onto collars and pillowcases, so I'd test it on a strand first and wear an old top over the costume while you spray.
9. Lilo And Stitch Bestie Costume

This tropical pair is cosy enough for a cold night, at least for Stitch. Lilo wears a red dress with large white leaf shapes, brown sandals and a flower clip, with long dark hair loose, sun-warmed makeup and a small camera, record sleeve or plush doll. Stitch is a blue hoodie and joggers with a pale blue belly panel, blue sneakers and a soft headband with oversized felt ears, plus blue face accents and a pink nose. Big felt ears flop unless you back them: I sandwich a layer of stiff interfacing or craft foam between two pieces of felt. Matching tropical bracelets connect the two, and Lilo should bring tights if the evening turns chilly.
10. Woody And Buzz Bestie Costume

Both looks here are detailed, which keeps the friendship even. Woody layers a yellow plaid shirt under a cow-print vest with blue jeans, a red neckerchief, brown boots and a foam cowboy hat, warm natural makeup and a coil of soft cord as his rope. Buzz wears a white fitted top and pants with green and purple fabric panels, white sneakers, padded wrist cuffs, a purple hood or close cap, graphic liner and a cardboard control panel. Small foam wings give the same effect as rigid ones and don't hit people in crowded rooms. I'd sew the coloured panels on Buzz with a zigzag stitch if the white base stretches, so they don't pucker.
11. Pink Ladies Bestie Costume

Matching jackets do the coordinating, so the rest can be different. Both friends wear blush-pink satin jackets with removable felt lettering on the back. One pairs it with cropped black pants, a fitted black top, a neck scarf and red flats; the other picks a black swing skirt, white blouse, belt and low black heels. Hair can go into high ponytails, rolled bangs or soft fifties curls, with winged liner, rosy cheeks and red lipstick. Cat-eye sunglasses, small combs and milkshake cups make fun props. Felt letters glued onto satin slide off, so I tack them on with a few loose hand stitches that come out cleanly afterwards.
12. Pop Star And Backup Dancer Bestie Costume

A stage pair works only if the dancer has as much fun as the star. The pop star wears a silver sequin top, metallic cargo pants, platform sneakers and crystal sunglasses, with a high ponytail or a bright wig, luminous makeup and a toy microphone. The backup dancer gets a cropped jacket, black tank, wide-leg pants, fingerless gloves and supportive high-tops, with braids or a sleek bun and graphic liner with silver accents. Repeat one metallic colour across both outfits so you look like the same show. A handmade backstage pass and a light headset finish it, and sequins scratch the inner arm, so the dancer is the one who should skip them.
13. Cowgirl Bestie Costume

Cowgirls come mostly from your own closets, which makes this a good fallback. One friend tucks a denim shirt into a suede-look fringe skirt; the other wears a plaid button-down with high-waisted jeans. Both add Western boots, wide-brim hats and contrasting bandanas. Hair needs to sit low, in loose waves, braids or a low ponytail, since a high one pushes the hat off. Bronzed cheeks, defined lashes and a muted red lip are enough. A light rope loop or small hobby horse is better than any toy weapon. Match the belts or boot colours to tie you together, and break in new boots before the night, because stiff Western boots rub at the heel.
14. Disco Bestie Costume

Disco is a dancing costume, so the platforms come first. One friend wears a silver sequin jumpsuit with platform boots, and the other gold flared pants, a metallic halter top and matching platforms. Big hoops, tinted sunglasses and small mirrored purses go with both. Hair can be brushed-out curls, a rounded wig chosen with respect for whose style it reflects, or a sleek high ponytail. Shimmery shadow, glossy lips and a few cheek gems suit it. Foam records or a little cardboard disco ball work for photos. A breathable cotton layer under the sequins stops the itch, and matching metallic belts connect the two looks.
15. 1980s Aerobics Bestie Costume

Bright eighties layers make you easy to spot in a crowded room. Each of you wears a colourful leotard or fitted tank over opaque leggings, with high-cut shorts, leg warmers and clean white sneakers. Split the neon so you don't match: pink and turquoise for one, purple and lime for the other. Hair goes into high side ponytails with big scrunchies, or under crimped wigs, with vivid shadow, pink blush and glossy lips. Sweatbands, painted foam hand weights and water bottles complete it. Everything here adjusts, so it suits most bodies and temperatures; leggings are the warmest part, so on a cold night layer thermal tights under the leotard.
16. Y2K Pop Duo Costume

Early-2000s outfits look random unless one colour runs through both. One friend wears a cropped silver jacket over a fitted tank with cargo pants and platform sneakers; the other wears a rhinestone baby tee, a pleated mini over shorts, knee socks and chunky shoes. Narrow sunglasses, mini shoulder bags, butterfly clips and pretend flip phones are the details people remember. Tiny front braids, a spiky bun or a high ponytail suit the era, with frosted shadow, glossy lips and body-safe shimmer. Pick lavender or icy blue and repeat it in bags, clips or laces. Butterfly clips slide out of fine hair, so a little texture spray first gives them grip.
17. Peanut Butter And Jelly Bestie Costume

Food jokes work best when the colours do the talking. Peanut butter wears tan pants, a beige sweatshirt, tan sneakers and a brown beanie with a big felt label on the front. Jelly wears purple pants, a grape-coloured top, purple sneakers and a headband with felt grapes. Neutral makeup suits peanut butter and a berry lip suits jelly. You can both carry oversized foam bread slices or wear light cardboard bread panels over your shirts. I'd cut panels no lower than the hip so you can sit down, and use foam board instead of plain card if there's any chance of rain, because cardboard softens and bends.
18. Ketchup And Mustard Bestie Costume

Ketchup and mustard is the last-minute pair I suggest most, because you can find the pieces in an afternoon. One friend dresses all in red: fitted T-shirt, comfortable pants or a skirt over tights, red sneakers and a pointed red cap. The other wears the same pieces in yellow. Removable white felt bottle labels make the joke. Hair goes into matching ponytails, braids or buns under the caps, with red lipstick for ketchup and golden shadow and a neutral gloss for mustard. A cardboard basket of pretend fries is a shared prop. Reds and yellows rarely match from different shops, so buy both tops at the same place if you can.
19. Salt And Pepper Bestie Costume

Salt and pepper suit friends who want simple clothes and a clean graphic look. Salt wears a white sweatshirt dress or white top and pants, silver sneakers and a white cylinder hat dotted with black felt circles. Pepper wears the same shape in black with black boots and a dark shaker hat with white dots. Sleek hair or contrasting white and black wigs work, with pearly eyes and pale pink lips for salt and smoky grey shadow for pepper. Big removable S and P letters make it obvious. Foam shakers are fun for photos. White sweatshirts pick up every smudge, so salt should get dressed last and keep a lint roller handy.
20. Milk And Cookies Bestie Costume

This is a warm, cosy pair for a cold evening. Milk wears white overalls or a white sweater dress, opaque tights, white sneakers and a blue-and-white carton headpiece, with a sleek ponytail, fresh makeup and small pearls. Cookie wears a tan sweatshirt and a brown skirt or joggers dotted with dark brown felt circles, brown sneakers, a tan beret, warm makeup and soft curls. A tray of foam cookies or cups with striped paper straws makes a sweet prop. The carton headpiece is easiest from a small cardboard box covered in paper and held on a headband with elastic under the hair. Repeat brown and blue details on both of you so the two foods clearly belong together.
21. Sun And Moon Bestie Costume

The sun and moon need shine, so I'd look for metallic fabrics first. The sun wears a gold dress or jumpsuit, metallic flats and a headband with soft golden rays, with glowing waves or a high ponytail, gold shadow, bronzed cheeks and tiny face gems. The moon wears silver or midnight blue, silver ankle boots and a crescent headpiece, with cool shimmer, small painted stars and a silver wig or sleek dark hair. Foam star wands go to both. Cut the sun's rays from felt with a little wire inside, not card, so they bend back if someone bumps them. Matching metallic belts and jewellery link the two without blending the palettes.
22. Rainbow And Rain Cloud Bestie Costume

This pairing is cheerful in daylight, and the cloud half is surprisingly easy. The rainbow wears a striped dress or a layered multicolour tulle skirt with a white top, bright sneakers and rainbow clips, with coloured liner and glossy lips. The rain cloud wears a grey sweater and a skirt or joggers, silver rain boots and a fluffy cloud headband made from light batting, with blue felt raindrops hanging from short ribbons. Silvery shadow and a grey bob wig or sleek natural hair finish it, and a small blue umbrella is the prop. Stitch the batting to the headband rather than gluing it, because batting pulls apart from glue as soon as it's handled.
23. Bee And Beekeeper Bestie Costume

One cute costume and one practical one make this a good split for friends with different tastes. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top, a black skirt or pants, opaque tights and comfortable ankle boots, with sheer wings, an antenna headband, yellow eye makeup and a high ponytail. The beekeeper layers beige overalls over a white shirt with work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh around the edge, natural makeup and hair tucked under the hat. A cardboard honey jar or light flower pot replaces real equipment. Yellow ribbons on the beekeeper's gloves pick up the bee's colour, and the mesh should stop above the mouth so the beekeeper can still eat.
24. Butterfly And Gardener Bestie Costume

Here one friend gets the fantasy and the other gets workwear, which suits a pair who don't want the same level of fuss. The butterfly wears a bright bodysuit or fitted top with a tulle skirt, patterned tights, flat ankle boots, large fabric wings and delicate antennae, with colourful eye makeup and a braided crown. The gardener wears green overalls over a floral shirt, rubber boots, a sun hat and gloves, with natural makeup and a low braid, and carries a light watering can of artificial flowers. Large wings need crossed straps at the back or they tip sideways. Repeat one wing colour in the gardener's shirt or bandana so you photograph as a pair.
25. Mermaid And Sailor Bestie Costume

The mermaid half is where comfort needs the most thought. She wears an iridescent fitted skirt with enough room to walk, a lavender or turquoise top, pearl jewellery and metallic flats, with loose waves, shell clips, shimmery eyes and a few scale details at the temples. A full tail looks great standing still and stops you climbing stairs, so I'd skip it entirely. The sailor wears wide-leg navy pants, a blue-and-white striped shirt, a red neck scarf, white sneakers and a soft sailor cap, with clean makeup, a neat ponytail or short wig and a cardboard telescope. Matching shell bracelets tie it together. A fishnet stencil and a little shimmer make easy scales.
26. Red Riding Hood And Wolf Bestie Costume

This storybook pair needs nothing frightening to work. Red wears a knee-length dress, or a blouse and skirt, under a bright red cape, with opaque tights, comfortable brown boots, braids or soft curls, rosy makeup and a wicker basket of artificial flowers. The wolf wears grey pants and a grey top, a faux-fur vest, sturdy boots and a headband with soft ears, plus a grey wig or teased hair, darkened brows, a painted black nose, gentle whiskers and a fluffy detachable tail. A tail pinned to the waistband gets sat on all night, so I sew it to a belt the wolf can swing to the side. Keep the makeup friendly rather than snarling.
27. Good Fairy And Dark Fairy Bestie Costume

Two fairies in opposite moods look like one set when the wings and dress lengths match. The good fairy wears a pale pink or ivory tulle dress, gold flats, translucent wings, a floral crown, soft curls, luminous pink-shimmer makeup and a small star wand. The dark fairy wears a deep purple or black layered dress, matching ankle boots, smoky translucent wings and a pointed floral headpiece instead of horns, with plum lips, purple liner and a sleek braid or dark wig. Matching crystal necklaces connect the two. Glitter on wings sheds on every surface you brush past, so I'd seal any glitter areas with a light coat of clear spray before the night.
28. Angel And Devil Bestie Costume

The angel and devil is the classic opposite pair, and it's easy to put together from your own closets. The angel wears a white jumpsuit or simple dress, opaque tights, silver flats, feather-style fabric wings and a light halo headband, with soft curls, pearl shimmer, rosy cheeks and glossy lips. The devil wears a red dress or red top and pants, black ankle boots, a pointed tail and a red horn headband, with a sleek high ponytail, winged liner and deep red lips. A foam cloud prop and a glittery red sign keep it playful, and matching metallic belts connect you. Halos on spring wire bob around, so anchor the headband with bobby pins behind the ears.
29. Glam Vampire Bestie Costume

Glam vampires let you go dark without any messy blood. One friend wears a floor-length burgundy velvet dress with a black cape, lace gloves and heeled ankle boots; the other wears a black satin jumpsuit, a deep red waistcoat, a dramatic cape and polished loafers. Glossy waves, sleek ponytails or dark vintage wigs suit both, with pale foundation, smoky eyes, sculpted cheeks and berry lips. Small fangs and jewelled chokers finish the look, and ornate empty goblets or old books are tasteful props. Costume fangs make talking and drinking awkward, so I'd only put them in for photos. Repeat burgundy across both of you to stay coordinated in different shapes.
30. Witch Bestie Costume

Two witches can look stylish rather than scary with a bit of colour. One friend wears a long black ruffled dress, a purple velvet cape, striped tights and buckled ankle boots; the other wears a deep green jumpsuit, a black lace cardigan, patterned tights and platform loafers. Coordinate the pointed hats with ribbons, flowers or small stars. Long waves or textured braids, purple and green eye makeup and dark berry lips finish both faces. Each of you can carry a short broom or a light spellbook, with matching crescent brooches. Tall hats fall off in wind, so I add a thin elastic loop under the hair or two hat pins through the brim.
31. Victorian Ghost Bestie Costume

Victorian ghosts are soft and pretty, which makes them a good choice for friends who don't want gore. Both wear high-neck white or pale grey dresses with lace collars, long sleeves and flowing skirts, grey tights and comfortable lace-up boots. One wears a silver-grey curled wig with a small veil; the other loose white waves with pearl clips. Pale makeup, cool grey shadow, faded brows and a muted rose lip suit both. Battery lanterns, cloth-covered books or bundles of dried artificial flowers make quiet props. Vary the lace and hem lengths so you aren't twins. Pale fabric goes grubby at the hem, so I'd keep the skirts ankle-length rather than floor-length.
32. Skeleton Bestie Costume

Skeletons are a simple base that each friend can personalise. Black long-sleeve tops and leggings, or black jumpsuits, get white felt bones or washable fabric paint, with black-and-white sneakers or lace-up boots. One friend wears a white bob wig, and the other puts dark hair into two buns with bone clips. Keep the makeup stylised: white face paint, dark eye sockets and simple cheek lines. Painted black gloves finish the hands. For a glam version, add white bow ties, rhinestones or metallic belts. White face paint cracks when you smile, so a thin layer set with powder holds up better than one thick coat.
33. Scarecrow Bestie Costume

Scarecrows are cosy, thrift-friendly and easy to make look different. One friend wears denim overalls over a plaid shirt, and the other a patchwork dress with a cardigan. Both add straw hats, colourful neck scarves and brown lace-up boots. Raffia tucked into cuffs and pockets gives the straw effect; I stitch small bundles in place, because loose raffia sheds everywhere and itches against the neck. Braids, low pigtails or tousled waves sit under the hats, with orange blush, painted freckles, a small triangle nose and stitched lines at the mouth. Mini artificial pumpkins or fabric crows are fun props, and matching plaid patches tie the two together.
34. Alien Bestie Costume

These aliens are more fashion than green monster. One friend wears a silver jumpsuit with white platform sneakers; the other a holographic skirt and top with silver ankle boots. Metallic belts, reflective cuffs and soft antenna headbands go on both. High buns, sculpted ponytails or silver and lavender wigs suit the look, with pearly highlights, colourful liner, small face gems and glossy lips instead of full face paint. Battery-lit orbs or foam planets are good props. Use the same holographic fabric on both of you, so you look like you came from one planet. Holographic fabrics are often slippery to sew, so I'd buy ready-made pieces and add only trims.
35. Astronaut Bestie Costume

Astronauts are comfortable enough for a full evening, which is why I like them for long nights. Matching white utility jumpsuits, or white cargo pants with zip-up jackets, get silver belts, patches, white sneakers and light backpacks dressed as life-support packs. One friend takes blue accents and the other orange or purple. Braids or low buns, luminous makeup and silver liner suit it. Only wear a visor if it has ventilation and you can see clearly; otherwise carry the helmet as a prop. Foam moon rocks, mission badges and small flags finish it. Iron-on patches work well on cotton jumpsuits, but on nylon they melt, so sew those instead.
36. Detective And Mystery Clue Bestie Costume

A detective and a walking clue is one of the cleverer pairs here. The detective wears a tan trench over a white shirt and tailored pants, brown loafers, a checked cap and a magnifying glass, with neat hair and understated makeup. The clue friend wears a bright monochrome dress or jumpsuit covered with removable felt question marks, matching tights and ankle boots, a bold bob wig, graphic liner and a headband with a big foam question mark. Clue cards or a notebook work as props. I'd repeat the detective's check fabric on the clue's belt, which links two very different outfits, and cut the question marks big enough to read from across the room.
37. Artist And Painting Bestie Costume

Creative friends get plenty to play with here. The artist wears paint-splattered overalls over a striped shirt, a soft beret, bright sneakers and a neck scarf, with a low bun or short waves and tiny painted freckles; clean brushes and a cardboard palette are the props. The painting wears a blue or black dress framed by a flat gold cardboard border fixed around the shoulders, with floral hair pieces, expressive makeup, patterned tights and flats, and a scenic or abstract design on removable fabric panels. Use real paint splatters only on overalls you don't plan to keep. The frame should rest on the shoulders with straps, not hang from the neck.
38. Tourist Bestie Costume

Tourists are the funniest last-minute pair, and most people already own the clothes. Bright printed shirts go with khaki shorts, crew socks and supportive white sneakers; one of you adds a bucket hat and the other a wide sun hat. Ponytails or hair tucked under the hats, a dab of white on the nose, rosy cheeks and natural lips are all the makeup needed. Cameras, folded maps, binoculars, water bottles and belt bags are the props, but leave real passports at home. Clash the shirt prints on purpose and match the socks and sneakers, which makes the awkwardness look deliberate. Handmade visitor badges or cardboard postcards make good photo props.
39. Tennis Player Bestie Costume

Tennis players suit a pair with an active night planned. One wears a white pleated tennis dress with green trim; the other a white polo with a pleated skirt or tailored shorts with navy accents. Crew socks, clean court sneakers, visors and wristbands go on both. High ponytails, braids or neat buns hold while you move, with waterproof mascara, rosy blush and tinted balm. Carry light rackets and foam balls rather than real gear. Matching cardigans tied over the shoulders add a preppy layer and warmth. All-white outfits need a slip or shorts underneath, since thin white fabric goes see-through under a camera flash.
40. Doll Bestie Costume

Dolls are the last pair, and they're all about polished hair and bright, toy-like makeup. One friend wears a pink fit-and-flare dress with puff sleeves, white knee socks and glossy Mary Janes; the other a lavender blouse with a matching pleated skirt, patterned tights and platform loafers. Curled ponytails, smooth bobs or colourful wigs get oversized bows. Round rosy blush, painted lower lashes, glossy lips and small faux freckles make the toy effect. Mini purses, oversized combs or a light cardboard display box are props. Painted lashes smudge fast, so I'd set them with a dusting of powder. Matching heart jewellery links the two pastel outfits.
Labels, Panels and Ears That Fall Off by Ten O'Clock
So many of these duos depend on a felt label, a cardboard panel or a pair of ears, and those are the pieces that come loose first. A few habits keep them on.
- Felt on cotton can be glued with fabric glue left overnight. Felt on polyester, satin or fleece should be tacked with a few hand stitches or safety pins, because most glues simply peel off those fabrics.
- Hot glue sets fast and is fine for props, but it grows brittle and lets go in cold outdoor air. For anything worn outside, stitch it or use a flexible fabric glue.
- Cardboard softens in rain and bends at the folds after one sit-down. Foam board or craft foam keeps its shape longer and weighs very little.
- Ears, rays and petals stand up better when you sandwich a layer of stiff interfacing or thin foam between two pieces of felt.
- Headbands slip less if you pin them with two bobby pins crossed behind each ear.
A small kit for the night
Between the two of you, carry a few safety pins, bobby pins, a mini lint roller, makeup wipes and a short length of double-sided fashion tape in a pocket or belt bag. Those cover a falling label, a slipping strap, face paint on a collar and white fabric picking up fluff, the small problems that otherwise send someone home early.
The Duo I'd Talk My Best Friend Into
A duo costume is easier to settle on when both of you love your half of it. This list runs from characters and food jokes to eras, fantasy opposites, spooky classics and quick DIY pairs, and almost any of them can be built from closet basics, thrifted layers, felt and light handmade props. Before you shop, think about your budget, the weather, the venue and how long you'll be on your feet. Share colours and one accessory, then let each person choose clothes and shoes that suit them. If I had to choose one for a night with my own best friend, it would be ketchup and mustard: cheap, comfortable and impossible to misread.
