Picking the character is the fun part, and it's also where most of the work gets decided. The forty women below come from anime, comics, games, fantasy and animated films, and for each one I've laid out the full outfit from wig and makeup to shoes and a prop. Plenty of them can be built from thrifted pieces or altered basics rather than a ready-made costume. What I always tell people is to get the signature colours right first, since colour is what people recognise from across a hall, and then adjust coverage, fabric and footwear to suit you. Some are closet cosplays you could finish in an afternoon, others are proper sewing projects.

What Makes a Character Read From Twenty Feet Away
Before I buy anything for a cosplay, I break the character down into what people actually see first. Most viewers recognise a character in a second or two from a distance, long before they notice a stitch or a buckle. That tells me where the money and the time should go.
- Colour blocks. Get the big colours in roughly the right proportions. A red suit that's slightly the wrong red still reads; a blue suit with too much white does not.
- The hair. For most of the women on this list, the wig is the single most recognisable piece. If the budget is tight, spend it here.
- The silhouette. Buns, braids, a cape, a ball skirt or a headpiece change the outline, and the outline is what people spot in a crowd.
- One signature accessory. A tiara, a scarf, glasses or a headset. One done well beats five done quickly.
- Everything else. Trim, buttons, panel lines and weathering are what people notice up close in photos, so they come last.
Working in that order also means you have a wearable costume early. If the week runs out, you can stop at step three or four and still have someone people can name.
1. Sailor Moon Cosplay With Sailor Uniform

Sailor Moon reads from the hair before anything else, so I'd put the time into the wig. A long blonde wig styled into two buns with long pigtails trailing from them is the silhouette, finished with red bun covers and a gold tiara with a red centre gem. The outfit is a white sailor-style bodysuit or fitted top, a pleated blue skirt, a blue collar, a red bow at the chest and another at the back, elbow-length white gloves and knee-high red boots. Pleated skirts in stretch fabric lose their pleats fast, so pick a woven fabric and press the folds in hard. Luminous skin, defined lashes and a rosy lip keep the face fresh. A heart-shaped compact is the prop, and boot insoles help on a long day.
2. Wednesday Addams Cosplay With Black Dress

Wednesday Addams is one of the most comfortable cosplays here, and you can build it from what's in most closets. A black knee-length dress with long sleeves, a structured white collar and white cuffs is the core. Floppy collars kill this look, so I'd interface the collar or buy a detachable one that holds its shape. Opaque black tights and chunky loafers or low platforms go underneath. Two neat braids with a sharp centre part do the hair, in your own hair or a black wig. Pale matte foundation, softly defined brows, a little gray shadow and a muted berry lip give the serious face without going theatrical. A black book or a vintage satchel is plenty for a prop.
3. Classic Barbie Cosplay With Pink Gingham Dress

Classic Barbie in pink gingham is a cheerful, easy-to-wear look. Find a pink-and-white gingham fit-and-flare dress with a fitted bodice and a belt, and slip a white petticoat under it if you want more swing. Gingham shows a crooked seam instantly, so if you're sewing it, match the checks at the side seams before you cut. Pink pumps or low block heels, pearl earrings and a small structured bag finish the outfit. A long blonde wig in soft waves with a half-up ponytail and a pink ribbon does the hair. Bright makeup works here: curled lashes, pink cheeks and a matching lipstick. Oversized white sunglasses make a fun photo prop. If heels hurt, pink ballet flats are fine.
4. Wonder Woman Cosplay With Red And Blue Armor

Wonder Woman needs to look armoured and still let you move, which is why I build her in stretch fabric and foam. A structured red top with a gold eagle panel pairs with a blue skirt or fitted shorts covered in white stars. Add a wide gold belt, metallic cuffs and a gold tiara with a red accent. EVA foam is the right material for the eagle and cuffs. It can be heat-shaped to curve round the body, but it needs sealing before paint, or the gold soaks in and goes patchy. Knee-high red boots or boot covers, a long dark wig in loose waves and warm bronze eyes with a red lip finish her. A light shield is good for photos, but you can leave it at home.
5. Harley Quinn Cosplay With Red And Black Jacket

Harley Quinn's red-and-black bomber jacket carries this version. Layer it over a white graphic tee and pair it with red-and-blue shorts or fitted pants, patterned tights, ankle socks and lace-up high-tops or boots. The blonde wig goes in high pigtails, one end tinted pink and one blue. I'd use coloured hair chalk or spray on a wig, and only on the last few inches, because it rubs off onto the jacket. Pale foundation, bold lashes, red lipstick and smudged pink and blue shadow do the face, with a small heart beauty mark. Studded bracelets, a choker and a crossbody bag are enough. Keep the accessories light, since this is a costume you'll want to move around in.
6. Spider-Gwen Cosplay With Hooded Bodysuit

Spider-Gwen is mostly one garment, which makes it easier than it looks. The base is a white-and-black stretch bodysuit with pink web lining in the hood and arms, with ballet-style shoes or light high-tops. The hood can go over a fitted fabric mask for photos. Masks made from single-layer spandex are fine to breathe through, but test it at home walking around for ten minutes, because a mask that's slightly too tight gets unbearable quickly. With the mask off, a short blonde bob with a side part takes over. Keep the makeup light with pink shadow and a rose lip. White fingerless gloves help your grip, and a slim white belt bag holds your phone without breaking the line.
7. Princess Leia Cosplay With White Gown

Leia's white gown is one of the easiest science-fiction cosplays to sew. A floor-length white gown with loose sleeves, a high neck and a silver belt is the whole outfit. White fabric is often see-through in bright light, so either choose an opaque weight or add a white slip, and check it in daylight before you commit. White ankle boots with a low heel go underneath. The two side buns are the hard part. I build each one around a foam bun donut and pin it to a wig cap rather than trying to coil long hair alone. Keep makeup natural with softly lined brown eyes, rosy cheeks and a muted pink lip. Hem the gown so it skims the floor without dragging.
8. Ahsoka Tano Cosplay With Blue Headpiece

Ahsoka Tano depends on her blue-and-white headpiece and her orange skin. Pair a deep blue sleeveless tunic with fitted gray leggings, layered waist panels, brown belts, gray arm coverings and knee-high brown boots. I'd make the headpiece from lightweight foam or stuffed fabric so it doesn't pull your head forward. Orange body makeup on exposed skin is the commitment here, and I'd be honest that it transfers onto everything you touch, so patch-test it on your inner arm first, set it with powder and keep makeup wipes on you. White facial markings and dark liner go on last. Coloured contact lenses are optional and should only ever come from an eye-care professional. A small belt communicator is a safe prop.
9. Black Widow Cosplay With Black Utility Suit

Black Widow is the cosplay for anyone who wants something practical in a quiet colour. A fitted black jumpsuit works, or an athletic long-sleeve top with black cargo pants. Add a wide utility belt, wrist cuffs, fingerless gloves and flat black combat boots. Thin foam panels or silver fabric paint give the uniform its detail without bulk. The red shoulder-length wig is what identifies her, so I'd spend money there rather than on the suit. Neutral foundation, defined brows, smoky brown eyes and a muted rose lip finish the face. A belt pouch and small badges add detail and storage. Choose pieces you can sit down in, since a stiff jumpsuit gets old by lunch.
10. Scarlet Witch Cosplay With Red Cape

Scarlet Witch gets her shape from red layers and a cape. Start with a fitted burgundy top and matching pants or a long split skirt, then add a structured red waist panel, fingerless gloves and a long light cape. Burgundy boots keep it all in one colour family. The foam crown is the piece people recognise, and I'd heat-shape it around a head form or a balloon so it curves properly, then seal it before painting. A long auburn wig with loose waves and a centre part goes underneath. Smoky red-brown eyes, strong lashes, contour and a deep rose lip do the makeup. For the magic, translucent red fabric or battery lights in your hands look good in photos.
11. Raven Cosplay With Purple Hooded Cape

Raven is dramatic without much construction. Wear a fitted black long-sleeve bodysuit or top, opaque black leggings and ankle boots. Add a wide metallic belt set with red faux gems, matching cuffs and a long purple hooded cape. A floor-length cape trips you on stairs, so I hem it a couple of inches above the floor in your actual shoes. A short violet wig cut into a smooth angled bob gives the hair. Cool-toned foundation, arched brows, plum shadow and a dark mauve lip do the face. The red gem on the forehead goes on with a skin-safe adhesive, patch-tested first. A black tunic and fitted pants swap in easily if you want more coverage.
12. Starfire Cosplay With Purple Two-Piece Suit

Starfire is all colour: purple, silver, green and a lot of red hair. A modest purple two-piece or a coordinated tunic and leggings is the base, with silver trim at the neck, waist, wrists and boot tops. Purple knee-high boots or shoe covers continue the colour. The long bright red wig needs plenty of volume at the ends. Very long wigs are heavy and pull the front hairline back over a day, so I sew a couple of wig clips inside the front edge. Warm golden makeup, lavender shadow, bold lashes and a glossy berry lip finish her, and green gems go on the collar and cuffs. Green acrylic circles or light-up spheres make good photo props.
13. Catwoman Cosplay With Black Jumpsuit

You don't need a moulded suit for a good Catwoman. A fitted black jumpsuit, faux-leather leggings with a matching top or a long-sleeve unitard all work. Add a wide black belt, elbow-length gloves and flexible knee-high boots with low heels. A simple black cat-ear mask or a fitted hood that leaves your face visible does the head. Faux leather doesn't breathe at all, so for a long day I'd use it only on the leggings and keep the top in matte stretch. Mixing the matte and glossy surfaces also gives the all-black look more depth. Winged liner, sculpted brows and a deep red lip are the makeup, and a small black pouch holds your essentials.
14. Supergirl Cosplay With Blue Dress And Red Cape

Supergirl's primary colours are cheerful and very easy to spot. Begin with a long-sleeve blue dress with a red-and-gold chest emblem, then add a gold belt, nude or blue tights and a light red cape. I attach capes with snaps sewn under the shoulder seams rather than at the neck, so the weight sits on your shoulders and nothing pulls at your throat. Knee-high red boots finish the silhouette. A long blonde wig in soft waves, kept smooth at the front, and fresh makeup with peach blush and a classic red lip do the rest. A reporter's notebook is a fun prop. If a short skirt feels impractical, add fitted shorts or choose a longer skater dress.
15. Poison Ivy Cosplay With Green Leaf Dress

Poison Ivy is a green base covered in faux leaves. A fitted midi dress, a skater dress or a green jumpsuit all work as the foundation. Attach fabric ivy along the neckline, waist and sleeves with a few stitches or clips. Glue alone fails here, since the leaves flex every time you move and pop off at the stem. Green tights and green ankle boots go underneath. Style a long copper-red wig in loose waves and weave small leaves through it. Green shadow, winged liner, glowing skin and a deep coral lip do the makeup. Leaf earrings and a vine-wrapped clutch finish it. Pick soft fabric foliage over rigid plastic around the arms so you can sit comfortably.
16. Velma Dinkley Cosplay With Orange Sweater

Velma is the closet cosplay I'd recommend to almost anyone, because you'll wear the pieces again. An oversized orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt and orange knee socks are the outfit, with red Mary Janes or low block heels. The short dark bob with full bangs and thick square glasses do most of the recognising. Look for a wig with a dense fringe, since thin bangs separate and show the wig cap. Warm neutral makeup, soft brown liner and a muted coral lip suit her. A mystery book, a magnifying glass or a satchel works as a prop. Opaque shorts under the skirt add comfort. It's a good first cosplay because nothing on it can break.
17. Daphne Blake Cosplay With Purple Dress

Daphne Blake is retro styling in purple and green. Choose a long-sleeve purple mini or knee-length shift dress, adding a lighter purple panel at the hem if yours doesn't have one. A bright green scarf goes at the neck, with pink or lavender tights. Purple Mary Janes, flats or low boots finish the outfit. Her hair is the tricky part: a long red wig with smooth volume, side-swept bangs and a purple headband. I'd tease a little at the crown and set it with hairspray before you leave, because that volume drops flat within hours otherwise. Lavender shadow, mascara, rosy blush and pink lipstick do the face. Flats are the sensible pick if you'll be walking a lot.
18. Kim Possible Cosplay With Green Cargo Pants

Kim Possible is everyday clothing worn with intent. A fitted black mock-neck top, loose olive cargo pants and a brown utility belt are the outfit, with black combat boots or chunky sneakers. Add black gloves and a small belt pouch. The long copper-red wig with a side part and flipped ends is what makes it Kim. Flipped ends fall out of most synthetic wigs, so look for a heat-resistant fibre and set the flip with a low-heat iron, testing a hidden strand first. Natural makeup with light freckles, brown liner and peach blush keeps it fresh. A flip-phone case doubles as a prop and a place for your cards. A drawstring waist on the cargos helps when sitting.
19. Shego Cosplay With Green And Black Jumpsuit

Shego's green-and-black uniform is graphic and very readable. Choose a fitted jumpsuit split into green and black sections, or combine a green long-sleeve top with black leggings and fabric panels. Add mismatched green-and-black gloves and black boots with green covers. A long smooth black wig with a side part does the hair, with pale foundation, sharp brows, smoky green eyes, winged liner and a dark berry lip. Translucent green gloves or small wrist lights suggest the glowing hands. If you sew the suit, put the zip at the centre back with a long pull cord, or at the centre front under a panel, because you will need to get out of it quickly at some point in the day.
20. Lara Croft Cosplay With Tank Top And Cargo Pants

Lara Croft can come entirely from a closet and a thrift store. Pair an olive, gray or dark teal tank with fitted brown cargo pants, or practical shorts over opaque tights. A utility belt, fingerless gloves and worn lace-up boots finish the outfit. A long dark wig in a low ponytail with loose strands by the face does the hair. Matte foundation, brown shadow and a neutral lip keep the face natural. I'd weather the clothes lightly with a dry brush of brown eyeshadow or fabric paint along the seams and knees, which looks like real wear rather than a mess. A rolled map, a rope loop or a canvas backpack is a safe prop, and moisture-wicking layers help.
21. Hermione Granger Cosplay With School Uniform

Hermione's school uniform is a good pick when the weather turns cold. Wear a white button-down under a gray V-neck sweater with a black pleated skirt or tailored trousers. Layer a black robe with red-and-gold lining on top and add a striped tie. Opaque tights and black loafers keep it neat. Her hair is a medium-length brown wig with plenty of waves and volume. Synthetic waves frizz when brushed, which actually suits her, so I'd scrunch rather than comb it. Soft makeup with rosy cheeks, brown mascara and tinted balm suits the character. Carry a few old textbooks or a book-shaped bag. A red-and-gold scarf can stand in for the robe for a lighter version.
22. Alice In Wonderland Cosplay With Blue Dress

Alice is a pale blue fit-and-flare dress with puff sleeves and a crisp white apron. White tights or knee socks and black Mary Jane flats go underneath. A blonde wig worn straight with gently curled ends and a black ribbon headband frames the face. Pink blush, a little blue shadow, fine liner and a rosy lip keep the makeup young. A teacup purse, a white rabbit plush or a card-print clutch is a fun prop. The apron should tie securely and stop above the skirt hem. I'd make the apron from crisp cotton and starch it, since a limp apron reads as a cleaning costume. It's comfortable for warm rooms and long days.
23. Belle Cosplay With Yellow Ball Gown

Belle's yellow gown is a classic princess build with plenty of movement. Choose a golden-yellow floor-length dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice and a layered skirt. Off-the-shoulder bodices slide down without support, so I'd add clear straps or a boned bodice. Long matching gloves, small gold earrings and yellow flats under the hem finish it. A brown wig in a half-up bun with curls down the back does the hair, with warm brown shadow, peach blush and a rose lip. A single silk rose or a book clutch is a good prop. Use light organza or satin layers instead of heavy fabric and a big hoop, and check the hem clears the floor.
24. Tinker Bell Cosplay With Green Fairy Dress

Tinker Bell is a short green petal dress with layered leaf-shaped panels, worn with opaque shorts underneath. Pale green tights are optional, and green flats with white pom-poms are the signature shoes. A blonde wig in a high bun with side-swept bangs, tied with a green ribbon, does the hair. Champagne shimmer, pink cheeks and glossy pink lips suit her. The wings should sit on a small harness rather than be sewn to the dress, because their weight drags a light dress backward and pulls the neckline up. Pick flexible wings with rounded edges for crowded spaces. A lantern-style purse or a star pouch is a sweet prop.
25. Elsa Cosplay With Blue Cape Dress

Elsa's ice-blue outfit needs very little beyond the gown itself. Wear a fitted pale blue dress with a sequined bodice, long sheer sleeves and a floor-length skirt, plus a sheer blue cape printed with snowflakes and fixed at the shoulders. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so I line the bodice or wear a skin-tone layer under it. Silver flats or low boots go underneath. A platinum wig in a thick side braid with soft strands at the face does the hair. Cool silver shadow, defined lashes and a berry lip finish the face. Go easy on glitter and use cosmetic-grade products near the eyes. Make the cape removable so you can take it off to eat or sit.
26. Princess Peach Cosplay With Pink Ball Gown

Princess Peach has one of the clearest silhouettes in gaming. Choose a pink ball gown with puff sleeves, a fitted waist and darker pink panels on the skirt. Add white elbow gloves, blue earrings and a small gold crown set with faux gems. Pink pumps or flats finish the outfit. A long blonde wig with side-swept bangs and full curled ends goes on top, with bright blue shadow, long lashes and pink lipstick. Puff sleeves deflate after a few hours, so I stuff them with a little tulle tacked inside. A star purse or a plush mushroom is a fun prop. A light petticoat gives volume without the width of a hoop, which is far easier in a crowd.
27. Princess Zelda Cosplay With White And Purple Dress

Zelda combines regal details with a soft palette. Begin with a floor-length white dress trimmed in gold with a structured purple front panel. Add a fitted gold belt, long white gloves, pointed ear cuffs and a delicate tiara. Gold trim is where a homemade Zelda looks expensive or cheap, so I use a metallic braid with some weight rather than flat ribbon. White or gold flats go underneath. A long blonde wig with slim front braids and gentle waves, lavender shadow and a soft rose lip suit her. Blue faux gems on the tiara and belt finish the details, and a small book or a blue crystal ornament makes a light prop. Keep the skirt narrow enough for doors.
28. Chun-Li Cosplay With Blue Qipao

Chun-Li's blue outfit has a bold silhouette that's easy to adapt for coverage. Wear a royal blue qipao-inspired tunic with gold edging, puff sleeves and side panels over fitted shorts or leggings. Add white waist details, foam spiked bracelets with rounded tips, brown tights and white lace-up boots. A dark brown wig in two high buns covered with white fabric ornaments and ribbons does the hair. I sew small snaps inside the side slits to keep them where you want them, which matters most on a long day of sitting and standing. Clean foundation, blue-gray shadow, sharp liner and a red lip finish the face. It looks complete even with no prop.
29. D.Va Cosplay With Blue And Pink Bodysuit

D.Va's suit is bright and has almost no loose pieces. Choose a blue-and-white long-sleeve bodysuit with pink panels and graphic accents, and pair it with white high-tops or light boots with blue detail. A pink headset and white gloves go next. A long straight dark brown wig gives the hair. The three pink cheek stripes on each side are the detail people look for, so I draw them with a fine liquid liner, patch-tested first, and set them with powder. A small controller or a plush mascot on the belt is a fun prop. If a bodysuit feels too restrictive, a fitted jacket with matching leggings recreates the same lines. Breathable stretch fabric keeps you cooler.
30. 2B Cosplay With Black Gothic Dress

2B is gothic and monochrome. Wear a black long-sleeve mini or knee-length dress with a high collar, an embroidered skirt and an open back, with an opaque layer underneath if you like. Add thigh-high socks or tights, elbow-length gloves and knee-high boots with stable soles. A short silver-white bob with side-swept bangs is the hair. The blindfold is the honest problem here: you can't see well through one, so I make it from thin fabric you can see through a little, and lift it whenever you're walking. Silver shadow, light contour and a nude lip keep the face cool. Textured fabric and decorative trim give the black dress depth without a big prop.
31. Aerith Gainsborough Cosplay With Pink Dress

Aerith is comfortable layered clothing, which makes her a good choice for a long day. Start with a soft pink ankle-length dress and a cropped red jacket, then add brown lace-up boots, simple bracelets and small silver earrings. A long chestnut wig in a thick braid tied with a pink ribbon does the hair, with strands left loose at the face. Natural foundation, brown liner, rosy blush and a pink lip suit her warmth. A woven basket of fake flowers is the prop. A cotton dress is cooler than satin and moves better. Long braids swing and pull the wig backward, so I pin the top of the braid to the wig cap in two or three places.
32. Tifa Lockhart Cosplay With White Tank And Black Skirt

Tifa can be put together from practical, sporty basics. Wear a fitted white tank with a black pleated skort or knee-length skirt, then add black suspenders, red fingerless gloves, black socks and sturdy red-and-black lace-up boots. Shorts or leggings under the skirt give extra coverage. A very long, straight dark brown wig with a side part does the hair. Suspenders slip off the shoulders on a tank, so I join them at the back with a small cross strap. Neutral foundation, smoky brown liner and a muted pink lip finish the face. A black waist pouch holds your things. Gather the wig loosely at the back so it doesn't tangle, and wear cushioned boots.
33. Ada Wong Cosplay With Red Dress

Ada Wong's red look is minimal and easy to recognise. Choose a fitted red midi dress with a high neck, a side slit and subtle black detail. Add sheer black tights and low black ankle boots rather than wobbly heels. A short black bob with side-swept bangs gives the sleek hair. Smooth foundation, sharp liner, sculpted cheeks and a classic red lip finish the face. The harness can be a decorative fabric belt rather than any real gear. A compact clutch or a small crossbody pouch is enough. Stretch fabric is more practical for sitting. If the slit feels too high, close the top of it with a few hidden stitches, which is easy to undo later.
34. Yor Forger Cosplay With Black Evening Dress

Yor Forger's black dress is dramatic and elegant. Choose a sleeveless black dress with a high collar, a fitted bodice and a flowing skirt lined in deep red. Add black tights, gold rose accessories and knee-high boots or stable heels. A long straight black wig with short face-framing strands and a gold headband does the hair. Red-brown shadow, sharp liner, long lashes and a deep rose lip finish the face. Rigid headbands press behind the ears after an hour, so I bend the ends slightly outward or pad them with felt. Soft stretch velvet or ponte gives the dress enough body while staying comfortable. Gold drop earrings and a small black bag are the extras.
35. Nezuko Kamado Cosplay With Pink Kimono

Nezuko is layered and full of small recognisable details. Wear a pink geometric-patterned kimono over a dark brown robe, tied with a red-and-white obi. Add a long dark outer coat, white leg wraps and flat sandals with costume socks. A long black wig with warm orange tips and a small ribbon to one side does the hair. Dip-dyed tips are easiest bought that way, because colouring the ends of a synthetic wig yourself rarely looks even. Rosy foundation, pink shadow and a soft pink lip suit her. The bamboo mouthpiece can be a light green tube on a loose ribbon that you take off to eat and drink. Hem the kimono above the ankle so you can walk.
36. Mitsuri Kanroji Cosplay With White Cape

Mitsuri's pink-and-green palette stands out in photos. Begin with a dark uniform-style dress or tunic with a pleated skirt and a short white cape over the shoulders. Striped green socks and white sandals or low boots go underneath. The long pink wig fading into mint green is styled into three thick braids. Those braids are heavy, so I pin each one to the wig cap with hidden pins along its length, which spreads the weight. Pink shadow, softly winged liner and a coral lip do the face. Green contacts are optional and should only come from an eye-care professional. A light belt and uniform buttons finish the base, and a soft cape moves best.
37. Frieren Cosplay With White Cape And Braids

Frieren is soft colours and simple layers. Wear a white tunic dress with gold trim over black leggings or tights, then add a short white capelet, a brown belt and sturdy brown ankle boots. A long silver-white wig in two low pigtails or braids and pointed ear cuffs do the head. Keep makeup delicate with cool taupe shadow, fine brown liner and a natural lip. Gold earrings and a vintage book bag are quiet accessories, and a small floral suitcase or a notebook makes a safe prop. White shows creases badly, so I'd choose a wrinkle-resistant fabric and fold the capelet with tissue in your bag to steam or smooth once you arrive.
38. Marin Kitagawa Cosplay With School Uniform

Marin's school uniform is an easy closet cosplay with a modern edge. Pair a white button-down with a navy pleated skirt and a striped blue tie, then add black knee socks, brown loafers and a school-style shoulder bag. A long blonde wig with pink-tinted ends, straight bangs and loose layers at the face does the hair, with small silver earrings and several ear cuffs. Ear cuffs are a good substitute if your ears aren't pierced in all the right places. Warm foundation, peach shadow, winged liner, full lashes and a glossy coral lip finish her. Keep the shirt fitted but not tight and wear shorts under the skirt. A phone case covered in charms is the prop.
39. Asuka Langley Cosplay With Red Bodysuit

Asuka's red suit has a strong graphic outline. Choose a fitted red jumpsuit with black, green and orange accent panels, and wear red ankle boots or high-tops that blend into the legs. A long copper-orange wig with side bangs and two red hair clips does the head. Peach-toned foundation, brown liner, warm shadow and a coral lip finish the face. A small red headset completes it. I'd draw the panels onto the suit with tailor's chalk while you're wearing it, because panels placed on a flat jumpsuit end up in the wrong place once the fabric stretches. A fitted red top with matching leggings is a fine substitute, and hidden pockets keep your phone off your hands.
40. Hatsune Miku Cosplay With Gray And Teal Outfit

Miku's long teal hair makes her one of the most striking choices on the list. Wear a sleeveless gray top with teal trim, a pleated black skirt, detached black arm sleeves and a bright teal tie. Add thigh-high socks and black ankle boots with teal detail. The extra-long turquoise wig goes into high twin tails using clip-on ponytails and strong clips on a short base wig. That setup is what I'd recommend, because the tails can come off between photos and the base wig stays light. Cool blue shadow, crisp liner and a glossy rose lip do the face. A headset mic and digital-print cuffs finish her. Keep the tails a little shorter than floor length so they don't drag.
Wigs That Hold Buns, Braids and Twin Tails All Day
A large share of these characters depend on a styled wig: Sailor Moon's buns, Leia's coils, Chun-Li's covered buns, Mitsuri's braids and Miku's tails. Styled hair is heavy, and the weight is what makes a wig slide back off the hairline by mid-afternoon.
- Wear a snug wig cap and anchor the wig with bobby pins pushed through the wig's own cap into the cap underneath, at the temples and behind the ears.
- Build buns around foam bun donuts or rolled fibre and pin them to the wig, rather than twisting long wig hair into a bun on its own. They hold their shape and weigh less.
- For long tails or very long hair, use clip-on ponytails on a shorter base wig. They come off between photos and stop the whole wig pulling backward.
- Synthetic fibre melts with high heat. If the wig says heat-resistant, still test a low setting on a hidden strand first.
- Brush synthetic wigs from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, and use a light spray of water mixed with fabric softener to tame static and tangles.
Bodysuits and Jumpsuits You Can Get Out Of
Spider-Gwen, D.Va, Shego, Asuka and Black Widow all live in one-piece suits, and the thing nobody plans for is the bathroom. I put a long zip at the centre back with a ribbon tied to the pull so you can reach it yourself, or I split the suit into a top and leggings with a belt hiding the join. Four-way stretch fabric is worth paying a little more for, since two-way stretch pulls tight across the shoulders when you lift your arms. And always try the full suit on sitting down, because that is where a suit that looked fine standing starts to pull.
Start With the Character Whose Colours You Already Own
A good cosplay is one people recognise and you can actually enjoy wearing. With forty characters across different fandoms, budgets, skill levels and coverage choices, the place to start is someone you genuinely like, then pin down their signature colours, hair, silhouette and one or two accessories. Perfect accuracy isn't required. Sensible fabric, supportive shoes, a secure wig and light props matter more over a long day. Do a full try-on at home a few days before and wear it for an hour. Pack safety pins, your makeup, a few wig pins and a backup pair of comfortable shoes. Then adjust anything that doesn't suit your body or your style.
