Picking a cosplay should be the fun part, and it gets easier once you know which characters are mostly sewing, which are mostly wig work and which you can pull together from a closet. Long-loved heroines like Mikasa and Sailor Moon sit happily next to newer favorites such as Frieren, Marin Kitagawa, Yor Forger and the Demon Slayer women. None of them require a particular body type, skin tone or age, and none require perfect accuracy. In the thirty characters below, I've noted what each build actually involves, from the fabric and fastenings to the wig and the props, so you can choose one that matches your time and your machine.

Sorting These Characters by How Much Sewing They Take
Before falling in love with a character, I'd look honestly at how much time you have and what your machine can handle. These thirty fall into three rough groups.
- Closet builds, mostly no sewing: Marin, Makima, Power, Android 18, Nami and Bulma. Your effort goes into the wig and pressing.
- Beginner sewing with simple shapes: Rukia, Nezuko, Hinata, Fern and Anya. Straight seams, wrap tops, elastic waists and a few snaps.
- Structured builds with trim, boning or lots of ruffles: Asuna, Emilia, Yor, Rem and Madoka. Give these a few weekends, not a few evenings.
Whatever the group, buy the wig first. It's the piece people recognize from farther away than any seam, and it often decides which shade of fabric you should match.
1. Sailor Moon Cosplay Costume

Sailor Moon is mostly about clean color blocking, which makes her a good first sewn costume. A white sailor-style bodysuit or fitted top goes with a pleated blue skirt, a blue collar, a red chest bow and a back bow, elbow-length white gloves and red boots. When I make the bows, I interface them firmly; soft bows droop forward within an hour and lose that crisp shape. The wig is the harder part: two high buns with long pigtails pull a lot of weight onto the crown, so anchor each bun to a snug wig cap with plenty of pins. A gold tiara, a red choker and a round compact finish her, and red boot covers over cushioned shoes are kinder to your feet than costume boots.
2. Nezuko Kamado Cosplay Costume

Nezuko's look is built from simple Japanese layers, and the pink kimono is the piece worth getting right. Wear a pink patterned kimono over a pale underlayer, held with a red-and-white obi, then add a dark haori, white leg wraps, sandals and dark socks. Her long black wig needs loose waves with warm orange tips and a small ribbon on one side. Keep the makeup to soft pink eyes and a little blush. Attach the bamboo mouthpiece with ribbon so it lifts off for eating and talking. If a true kimono feels restrictive, I sew a wrap top from breathable printed cotton and close it with hidden snaps under the obi, so it never gapes when you move.
3. Mitsuri Kanroji Cosplay Costume

Mitsuri is bright and cheerful, but her wig is the real build. A dark button-front uniform top, a white haori, a short pleated skirt, thigh-high green socks and white sandals with pink straps make up the clothes. The wig blends bubblegum pink into lime-green ends and splits into three thick braids, and the weight of those braids drags on the hairline. I pre-braid on a wig head the night before and keep the braids looser than looks natural, which reduces the pull. Pink-and-green shadow and a glossy lip suit her. White hair ribbons and a small pin are enough of a prop, and stretch shorts plus fashion tape at the neckline keep the uniform secure.
4. Shinobu Kocho Cosplay Costume

Shinobu reads as elegant without any armor, and the haori pattern carries the whole costume. A dark fitted uniform, loose matching pants, white leg wraps and flat sandals go under a flowing white haori with a pastel gradient and butterfly-wing pattern at the edges. Printing or painting that gradient is the most time-consuming step; I test fabric paint on a scrap first, since some paints stiffen lightweight fabric so it stops flowing. Style a black wig into a low twisted updo with purple tips and pin a large butterfly ornament at the back. Lavender shadow and a berry lip suit her palette, and a small fan or medicine pouch is a safe prop.
5. Yor Forger Cosplay Costume

Yor's black dress is a lovely sewing project if you like fitted bodices. Choose or make a sleeveless black dress with a high neckline, gold trim and an asymmetrical skirt, worn with sheer tights and knee-high boots on a heel you can manage. The gold trim is the detail that sells it, so I stitch it down rather than gluing; glued trim lifts at curves the first time you sit. A long straight black wig with short face-framing strands and a wide gold rose headband finishes the head. Red-brown shadow and sharp liner give a similar effect to red contacts without the eye risk. Sew shorts or an opaque lining under that skirt, and carry decorative roses rather than any weapon prop.
6. Anya Forger Cosplay Costume

Anya is a playful, family-friendly choice for an adult cosplayer, and it's mostly a simple dress. A black A-line dress with long sleeves, gold edging and a crisp white collar goes with white knee socks and black flats or Mary Janes. I make the collar detachable so it can be washed and pressed separately; a limp collar is what makes school-style dresses look tired. A short pastel-pink wig with curved ends and the black-and-gold cone hair pieces handle the rest. Light makeup is right for her. A plush toy or small peanut-shaped purse adds her personality, and stretch fabric keeps the dress comfortable.
7. Mikasa Ackerman Cosplay Costume

Mikasa is my pick for anyone who prefers practical layers and very little makeup. A white button-front shirt, fitted white pants, a cropped tan jacket and tall brown lace-up boots form the base, with a dark wrap skirt or harness-style straps over the pants. Make the straps from nylon webbing rather than faux leather; webbing doesn't stretch or crack, and it adjusts with simple slide buckles. The deep red scarf has to sit prominently around the neck. A short textured black wig, straight brows and muted brown eye makeup suit her serious look. A green hooded cape or a wing-style patch adds detail without bulky gear.
8. Asuna Yuuki Cosplay Costume

Asuna's red-and-white uniform rewards neat sewing more than any other costume here, because the red panels and silver trim show every wobble. A white tunic dress with red paneling, a fitted waist and a short pleated skirt goes over white thigh-high socks with white-and-red knee boots. I sew the panels first and press every seam before adding trim, which keeps the lines straight. A straight chestnut wig with two small braided sections behind the head, luminous skin and soft pink lips complete the face. Silver clips, a red-and-white cape panel and a small guild-style emblem add movement and story. Hidden shorts and low heels keep it wearable for hours.
9. Zero Two Cosplay Costume

Zero Two's red uniform can be sewn or altered from a thrifted jacket, and alteration is often faster. Start with a fitted red military-style jacket with white piping, black leggings and white over-the-knee boots, then add a white neck detail and a structured belt. Adding piping to an existing jacket is easiest along the front edges and cuffs, where you can open a seam and slip it in. The long pastel-pink wig needs full bangs and red horns on a headband; I glue the horns to the headband, not the wig, so the wig can still be restyled. Pink shadow, winged liner and small red accents under the eyes finish her. Choose flat-soled boots for comfort.
10. Rem Cosplay Costume

Rem's maid uniform is all about ruffles and trim, so set aside time for hemming. A black or deep navy dress with puffed sleeves, a white apron, a rounded collar and layered white trim goes with white thigh-high socks and low Mary Janes. Gathering yards of ruffle by machine is much faster with a gathering foot or two rows of long basting stitches. The short sky-blue wig curves around the jaw and covers one eye, so trim the bangs a little at a time while it's on your head. A white floral headband, cool shadow and a rosy lip suit her. A small tray or blue bouquet makes a charming prop, and knee-length skirt and secure apron ties keep it modest.
11. Emilia Cosplay Costume

Emilia's pastel dress is graceful but heavy on structure. A white off-the-shoulder dress with lavender trim, fitted sleeves, a shaped bodice and a layered skirt goes with white thigh-highs and low white boots with purple details. Off-the-shoulder bodices slip down unless they're built to stay up, so I add boning at the side seams and silicone gripper elastic along the neckline. A long silver wig with soft face-framing layers and a white flower near one ear finish her hair, and pointed ear cuffs give the elven look without prosthetics. Silver-lavender shadow and pale rose lips suit her. Wrinkle-resistant fabric and a shorter lining under the skirt help in crowds.
12. Marin Kitagawa Cosplay Costume

Marin is one of the easiest characters here to put together from regular clothes. A white button-front shirt, a blue plaid pleated skirt, a striped tie, a dark cardigan, black knee socks and brown loafers make the uniform. The long blonde wig with warm pink ends and side bangs is the key piece, and a few small ear accessories match her style. Peach blush, glossy pink lips and brown winged liner suit her. A tape measure looped around your neck is a nice nod to her love of making costumes. Keep the shirt comfortably fitted, wear stretch shorts under the skirt, and this is a good first cosplay for beginners.
13. Frieren Cosplay Costume

Frieren's calm look depends on clean white layers, which means fabric choice matters. A white tunic dress with gold edging and long sleeves, black leggings, a short white capelet, a brown belt and dark ankle boots make the outfit. White fabric goes see-through under bright lights, so I line the tunic or choose a heavier knit. Her silver-white wig is center-parted into two low pigtails. Pointed ear cuffs, simple gold earrings and a red teardrop necklace complete the character, with minimal taupe makeup. An aged-looking spell book is a good prop that doesn't get in the way. Flat boots keep it comfortable through a long day of photos.
14. Fern Cosplay Costume

Fern is a modest, comfortable alternative to the more elaborate fantasy dresses. A long black dress with a high collar, fitted cuffs and a gently flared ankle-length skirt goes under a white cape or hooded wrap with dark fastenings at the neck. I'd use a lightweight suiting fabric for the dress; it holds the flare without clinging and doesn't crease when you sit. Opaque tights and black ankle boots finish the lower half. The long purple wig with straight lengths and thick bangs identifies her right away. Mauve shadow and berry-pink lips keep the makeup quiet, and a silver hair ornament and small spell book finish her.
15. Nobara Kugisaki Cosplay Costume

Nobara builds from fairly simple tailoring. A dark navy jacket with a standing collar, a matching knee-length pleated skirt, black tights and sturdy brown ankle boots make the uniform, with a slim belt and small waist pouch. The jacket only looks right if the shoulders fit cleanly, so I adjust a thrifted jacket at the shoulder seam before anything else. Her short auburn bob wig is slightly tousled with side-swept bangs. Warm brown shadow and a muted rose lip match her style. A straw-doll plush charm or a toolkit-shaped handbag hints at her abilities without any sharp props, and the pleats should allow a full walking stride.
16. Maki Zenin Cosplay Costume

Maki pairs an athletic outline with green details. A dark navy high-neck tunic, fitted pants or a modest skirt, black tights and lace-up boots form the base, with a brown utility belt and a small pouch. Her rectangular glasses are essential; clear-lens frames are easy to find if you don't wear glasses. The dark green wig goes into a high ponytail with shorter pieces around the face, and a ponytail clip-on is far easier than styling a full long wig upward. Natural makeup suits her. A green wrist wrap and a school emblem finish the costume, and flexible pants make action poses easy.
17. Power Cosplay Costume

Power is a costume built on office clothes, so the effort goes into the wig and horns. A white shirt with rolled sleeves, a black tie, dark tailored pants and white sneakers form the outfit, with a loose blue jacket or cardigan if you want more coverage. Her long strawberry-blonde wig has thick bangs and a slightly messy finish. Mount the red horns on small clips sewn into the wig cap; glue on the wig fibers pulls hair out and the horns tilt by afternoon. Sharp red liner and a confident red lip strengthen the look. Contacts are optional and only worth it if you already wear lenses safely. A plush cat is a good family-friendly prop.
18. Makima Cosplay Costume

Makima shows how little construction a cosplay can need, and how much the details matter when it's that simple. A crisp white shirt, a fitted black tie, straight black trousers and polished lace-up shoes make the outfit, so I press everything carefully; a wrinkled shirt makes her look like regular workwear. Her long copper-red wig goes into a low loose braid with straight bangs and face-framing strands. Matte skin, peach shadow, fine black liner and a muted coral lip give her composed expression. Spiral contacts are optional and eye comfort comes first. A slim black coat or a small office folder finishes her.
19. Nami Cosplay Costume

Nami's outfit is one of the coolest to wear in warm weather. A green-and-white striped fitted top, dark blue knee-length shorts and brown lace-up sandals form the base, with a tan belt, an orange bracelet and a small map pouch. Her shoulder-length orange wig has soft layers and side-swept bangs. Bronze shadow, sun-kissed blush and coral lipstick look fresh. A rolled paper map or a small citrus-shaped purse makes a light prop. For more coverage, add a light green vest or choose longer high-waisted shorts. Breathable cotton is what keeps this comfortable outdoors, so I'd avoid polyester stripes here.
20. Nico Robin Cosplay Costume

Nico Robin is a grown-up alternative to the school uniforms on this list. A fitted purple blouse with a modest neckline goes with a midi skirt or dark fitted pants and heeled brown ankle boots, plus a wide-brim white hat, gold hoops and a small shoulder bag. Her long sleek black wig can have smooth bangs or face-framing layers depending on the version you like. Violet shadow, winged liner and mauve lipstick suit her. A history book or parchment scroll fits her scholarly side. The purple is what people recognize, so keep the shades close; mismatched purples look like separate outfits.
21. Boa Hancock Cosplay Costume

Boa Hancock's long red dress has dramatic color and movement, and it needs planning for stairs. A long red dress with a high side opening goes over matching shorts or an opaque underskirt, with gold patterning, a deep pink sash, a flowing white cape and low red or gold shoes. Her extra-long black wig is sleek, center-parted and reaches below the waist; long wigs tangle quickly, so I braid the lengths loosely for travel and brush them out on arrival. Purple shadow and rich pink lipstick finish the face. A small snake bracelet references the character. Adjustable cape fasteners and a short train keep the dress manageable in crowds.
22. Bulma Cosplay Costume

Bulma's early adventure outfit is a cheerful beginner build made almost entirely of separates. A pink shirt-dress with her name or a simple letter, a purple neck scarf, blue socks and white sneakers with colored accents form the outfit, plus a red belt pouch and fingerless gloves. A short turquoise bob wig with full bangs completes her. Aqua liner, pink blush and a bright lip coordinate with the colors. Iron-on vinyl or felt letters work for the name; felt letters peel off polyester unless you stitch around them. A small capsule-shaped container is a light prop, and shorts underneath help if the dress feels short.
23. Android 18 Cosplay Costume

Android 18's denim look is a closet cosplay you'll wear again afterward. A black-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt, a cropped denim vest, a high-waisted denim skirt or jeans and black leggings go with brown ankle boots and a slim belt. Cropping a thrifted denim vest is easy: cut it a little longer than you want and let the hem fray a few washes, or fold and stitch it for a clean edge. A blonde chin-length bob with a side part curving inward finishes her hair. Gray shadow and dusty pink lips keep her cool. Small gold hoops and stretch denim make it comfortable for a whole day.
24. Ochaco Uraraka Cosplay Costume

Ochaco's hero suit is sporty and bright, and stretch fabric does most of the work. A black or deep navy long-sleeve jumpsuit with pink piping, white wrist cuffs and a structured pink belt is the base, with rounded pink-and-white boot covers over comfortable sneakers. Stretch jumpsuits need a zipper long enough to step into; I put a long front or back zip in rather than relying on a short neck opening. Her short chestnut wig has curved bangs and rounded ends at the jaw. Rosy cheeks and a natural pink lip suit her. Lightweight foam wrist pieces in detachable sections are easier to pack and less likely to crush.
25. Himiko Toga Cosplay Costume

Toga's school uniform turns into a playful villain look without any graphic makeup. A cream sailor-style cardigan with a navy collar, a red neck scarf, a dark pleated skirt, black knee socks and brown loafers make up the outfit, with a loose beige sweater layered on top if you want her more detailed silhouette. The blonde wig goes into two messy side buns with straight bangs and loose strands; messy buns actually hold better than neat ones, because teased hair grips the pins. Golden-brown shadow and a berry lip give a mischievous look. A gray face covering worn loosely around the neck and a small keychain prop keep it public-friendly.
26. Rukia Kuchiki Cosplay Costume

Rukia's black robe is modest and dramatic, and it's a manageable first sewing project with Japanese garments. A black wrap-front top with wide sleeves, matching pleated hakama-style pants, a white under-collar and a broad white waist sash make the outfit, with white socks and flat black sandals. Hakama pleats are easiest if you mark and press them flat before sewing the waistband on. Her short black wig has uneven bangs and slightly spiked ends. Cool gray shadow and precise liner suit her. Hidden snaps under the sash keep the wrap neckline in place, and lightweight fabric keeps the robe from getting hot indoors.
27. Yoruichi Shihouin Cosplay Costume

Yoruichi's outfit is streamlined and easy to adjust for coverage. A sleeveless black mock-neck top, beige arm warmers, fitted black pants, a gold waist belt and black boots form the base, with a longline vest or short purple jacket if you want more coverage. Arm warmers slide down constantly unless you add a band of elastic or silicone gripper inside the top edge, which I always do. Her deep purple wig goes into a high ponytail with long bangs framing the face. Bronze shadow, sharp liner and plum lipstick give her a bold look. Gold wrist cuffs and a small cat-shaped purse are fun references.
28. Sakura Haruno Cosplay Costume

Sakura's red-and-pink outfit is easy to adapt for different weather and coverage. A sleeveless red tunic with white circle details, fitted black shorts, a pink skirt panel and black ankle boots form the base, with elbow-length gloves and a waist pouch. I cut the white circles from felt and stitch them on, since iron-on circles tend to bubble on a stretch tunic. Her short pink wig needs a red headband set firmly across the crown so it doesn't slide back. Rose shadow and a natural berry lip suit her. Opaque tights under the shorts work for cold days, and a flexible tunic lets you pose freely.
29. Hinata Hyuga Cosplay Costume

Hinata's lavender jacket outfit is one of the most comfortable costumes here. A pale lavender hooded jacket with cream sleeves goes over dark navy fitted pants, with open-toe-style boot covers over secure black flats, a small thigh pouch and a leaf-style headband. If you sew the jacket, make it slightly loose, which suits her shy character and gives room for a warm layer underneath. Her dark blue-black wig has straight bangs and long smooth layers. Lavender-gray shadow and a mauve lip keep her gentle. Pale contacts are optional and never worth risking your eyes. Stretch pants with pockets mean you won't need a bag.
30. Madoka Kaname Cosplay Costume

Madoka's pink magical-girl dress is the frilliest build on this list. A pink fitted bodice with puffed sleeves, a white collar and a layered knee-length skirt sits over a soft petticoat, with white gloves, cream knee socks and low red Mary Janes. A petticoat made of soft tulle or crinoline-backed netting holds the shape; stiff netting scratches the back of your legs, so I line it at the hem. Her short pink wig has curled ends and two small side ponytails tied with red ribbons. Sparkly pink shadow and a glossy rose lip suit her. A red gemstone choker and a small plush companion finish her.
Long Anime Wigs That Stay Put From Morning to Night
A lot of these characters have long, bright, two-tone or heavily styled hair, and a badly secured wig is the most common thing to go wrong on a long day. These are the habits I rely on.
Securing it
- Flatten your own hair in small pin curls or braids, then wear a snug wig cap so there's something for pins to grip.
- Push bobby pins through the wig's inner lace into the cap at the temples and nape; four or five well-placed pins beat a dozen random ones.
- For buns, horns or heavy braids, sew a comb or clip into the wig cap and attach the weight to that, not just to the fibers.
Styling and cutting
Cut bangs while the wig is on your head, a little at a time, with the scissors pointed into the hair rather than across it. Cheap synthetic fiber frizzes or melts near heat, so check whether yours is heat-resistant before using a straightener, and use steam or very low heat if it is. Long wigs shed and tangle; a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward and a light fabric-softener spray make them easier to manage.
Getting home with it intact
Store long wigs on a stand or loosely braided in a hairnet. Pack styled buns or ponytails in a box with tissue so they don't crush, and put horns and clips in a separate bag.
Your First Character Should Fit Your Machine Time
There's a character above for every skill level and budget. Marin, Android 18 and Power come together from wardrobe pieces; Rukia, Nezuko and Sailor Moon make good first sewing projects; and Asuna, Emilia and Madoka are the ones to try once you're comfortable with structure and trim. Whichever you choose, put your effort into breathable fabric, a wig that's pinned down properly, shoes you can stand in, and props that are light and safe. Accuracy matters less than people think. The right colors, the hair and one signature accessory do most of the recognizing, and the rest you can adjust for comfort and your own style.
