The Hex Girls are one of my favorite group costumes to style, because the band already did the hard part: three members, three colors, three instruments. Thorn wears black and red, Luna wears purple and Dusk wears green, and that split lets a trio read as a band from across a room. I treat every version the same way, accurate or loose: coordinated clothes, the right hair, stage makeup, boots you can stand in and a light musical prop. Below you'll find classic recreations, quick closet versions, jumpsuits, warm-weather and cold-weather builds, modest and plus-size options, and trio and duo plans, all adjustable for budget and comfort.

Splitting the Colors So Three Friends Read as One Band
A Hex Girls group falls apart when everyone shops separately and turns up in three unrelated shades of black. Before anyone buys anything, I get the group to agree on a few shared rules.
- Each person owns one color and nobody borrows it. Red stays with Thorn, purple with Luna, green with Dusk; a stray purple accessory on Thorn blurs the split.
- Black is the shared base. Similar black boots, tights or jackets on all three is what makes separate outfits look like one band.
- Pick one metal for the whole group. Silver chokers, hoops and pendants on everyone tie the looks together better than mixed gold and silver.
- Cast by hair. Long black hair suits Thorn, a short bob suits Luna and short pigtails suit Dusk, so check who already has hair close to a character before deciding who needs a wig.
Instruments do the last bit of identifying. Even in the most casual version, I make sure Thorn has a guitar, Luna a keyboard and Dusk drumsticks, because those three props tell people it's a band before they work out the characters.
1. Classic Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Thorn leads the band, so whoever plays her sets the tone for the group. Start with a fitted black maxi dress with red panels, an uneven hem and flowing sleeves; if all you have is a plain black dress, a black corset belt gets you close to that stage shape. Her long black hair with vivid red streaks is the detail I'd never skip, either as a wig or as clip-in red extensions. Smoky liner, strong brows and deep red lipstick, with fangs optional. A bat necklace, black fingerless gloves and pointed red nails. Black platform boots with some padding and a light black-and-red toy guitar you can carry all evening.
2. Classic Luna Hex Girls Costume

Luna is purple from top to toe, with a playful gothic cut. A dark purple cropped top and high-waisted skirt is the classic version, though a fitted purple dress with a black waist belt does the same job. Sheer purple sleeves or long gloves add depth. Her short reddish-orange hair matters more than any clothing piece, so I look for a chin-length wig with gently flipped ends; a long wig cut down rarely gets that flip right. Plum shadow, black liner, berry lipstick, big hoops and a purple pendant, then purple knee-high boots or black platforms with purple laces. A compact keyboard prop shows her role.
3. Classic Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Dusk brings the green to the trio and an edgier mood with it. A sleeveless green maxi with a high slit is the base; layer a fitted black top under it if you want more coverage. A black waist belt defines the shape, and purple jewelry gives her contrast color. Short blonde high pigtails come next, wig or not. Green shadow, sharp black liner, muted plum lipstick and a little shimmer. A purple choker, an X-shaped pendant and black wrist cuffs. Tall black platform boots with green straps. I'd carry light drumsticks rather than a drum unless you've found a small practice drum on a comfortable strap.
4. Classic Hex Girls Trio Costume

Three people in three colors is the fastest way to make the theme obvious. Thorn takes the flowing black-and-red gown, long dark hair and a guitar; Luna the fitted purple set, short reddish-orange hair and a keyboard; Dusk the green-and-black dress, blonde pigtails and drumsticks. Keep footwear in the same family with black platform boots in slightly different styles. Each of you can wear a smoky eye in your own color, while a shared dark lipstick ties the faces together. Coordinated chokers and metallic jewelry help. Practice one band pose before photos so every instrument and hairstyle shows.
5. Red Velvet Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Velvet gives Thorn's colors depth under evening light, but it shows every crease, so I hang the dress in a steamy bathroom the night before. A black velvet maxi with a deep red sash, red bell sleeves or removable red shoulder drapes. A wide corset-style belt adds shape with no sewing. A long black wig with thin red extensions near the face, charcoal shadow blended with burgundy shimmer, winged liner and dark cherry lipstick. A bat pendant and ruby-colored earrings. Black velvet platform boots or block-heel ankle boots, and a foam guitar painted black with red ribbon and removable bat decals.
6. Thorn Hex Girls Mini Dress Costume

For a shorter Thorn, take a fitted black mini with long mesh sleeves and add an asymmetrical red overskirt. That extra layer keeps the rock-star swing and gives you more coverage at the back and sides, which matters when you're sitting on a party sofa. Opaque black tights underneath, especially outdoors. Long black hair with red streaks, dramatic wings and crimson lips keep the character clear. A bat choker, stacked silver rings and red press-on nails. Chunky knee-high boots with cushioned insoles beat narrow heels. An inflatable guitar weighs almost nothing, so you can actually dance with it.
7. Thorn Hex Girls Jumpsuit Costume

A black jumpsuit is the practical swap for Thorn's gown. Pick a fitted, wide-leg style and attach red chiffon panels at the waist and sleeves with safety pins or fashion tape; chiffon frays, so I run a line of clear nail polish along any raw cut edge. A structured black belt and a red gemstone necklace. Long black hair with bold red streaks at the front, black liner, burgundy shadow, red lipstick and a touch of silver highlighter. Platform ankle boots keep wide legs off the floor and move better than stilettos. Fingerless gloves and a black-and-red guitar suit crowded parties and outdoor celebrations.
8. Plus Size Thorn Hex Girls Costume

On a plus-size Thorn, I fit the dress across the bust and shoulders first and let the panels do the drama. A stretchy black wrap or empire-waist maxi moves well, with red chiffon sleeve panels and a wide elastic belt instead of a rigid corset you'll want out of within the hour. Long dark hair with red extensions frames the face, and burgundy shadow with red lipstick brings the stage feel. A bat pendant, light earrings and black fingerless gloves. Supportive platform boots or wide-fit block heels. Put the guitar on an adjustable strap so it sits where you want it instead of dragging the neckline.
9. Modest Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Full coverage takes nothing away from Thorn, because her identity sits in the color blocking and the hair. A long-sleeve black maxi with a high neckline and a relaxed skirt, then red chiffon along the sleeves, waist and hem. A soft black belt adds shape without pinching. A long black wig with narrow red streaks, or red clip-ins in naturally dark hair. Burgundy smoky eyes, defined liner and a classic red lip. Wear the bat pendant over the high neckline so it isn't lost. Flat lace-up boots and a decorated foam guitar finish the gothic band look.
10. Last-Minute Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Thorn is the easiest Hex Girl to pull from a closet. A long black dress, a black skirt and top, or a fitted black jumpsuit; tie a red scarf at the waist and pin a second piece of red fabric to one shoulder so it flows when you move. Clip temporary red pieces into long dark hair, then black liner and red lipstick. A printed bat on black ribbon makes a five-minute choker. Whatever black boots you own will do, platforms or chunky ankle boots if possible. A cardboard guitar painted black with red paper details, and nobody needs to sew a stitch.
11. Glam Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Sparkle is fine on Thorn as long as the red and black stay in charge. A black sequined maxi or a fitted gown with red crystal trim, plus a red satin capelet you can take off when the room heats up. Long black waves with polished red extensions and a little hair glitter; glitter gets everywhere, so I apply it last and outside. Smoky black eyes with red shimmer, sculpted brows and glossy berry lipstick. A jeweled bat choker, silver cuffs, dark red nails and rhinestone strips on black platform boots. Keep the glossy toy guitar light enough to pose with all night.
12. Thorn Hex Girls Concert Costume

Think of Thorn on a current-day stage for this one. A black faux-leather top over a flowing black high-low skirt with red mesh panels, and opaque tights underneath so you can move without worry. Her hair should look tousled rather than set in perfect curls, with thick red streaks. Bold liner, burgundy shadow, red lipstick and a silver highlight at the inner corners. A bat necklace, stacked bracelets and fingerless gloves. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so on a warm night I'd swap the top for a black knit and keep the leather for a jacket. Stable platform combat boots, a guitar and a light headset mic.
13. Winter Thorn Hex Girls Costume

Cold weather doesn't have to bury Thorn under a coat. Start with a long black velvet dress over thermal leggings and put a fitted red turtleneck underneath, so red shows at the neck and wrists. A black cape with red lining adds warmth in her palette. Long black hair with red streaks under a slim black headband. Smoky liner, burgundy shadow and a transfer-resistant red lipstick that survives a scarf. Wear the bat pendant outside the cape. Lined black platform boots with grippy soles, a light guitar with red ribbon and black gloves with red cuffs.
14. Purple Velvet Luna Hex Girls Costume

Purple velvet suits Luna's palette and her retro side. A fitted purple velvet mini or midi with long flared sleeves, black tights and a wide purple belt. A short reddish-orange wig with flipped ends, smoothed close to the face. Plum shadow, black winged liner, berry lipstick and a little lavender highlighter. Large silver hoops and a purple pendant are her signature jewelry. Purple knee-high platforms, or black boots threaded with violet ribbon. I like a small keyboard-shaped clutch made from painted cardboard for crowded rooms; it carries your phone and still reads as her instrument.
15. 1990s Luna Hex Girls Costume

Luna's look sits naturally in late-1990s fashion, which makes this one easy to thrift. A dark purple baby tee and a matching ankle-length skirt over a black mesh top, with a narrow chain belt and stacked bangles. A short copper-orange wig with outward-curled ends and small clips near the temples. Frosted lavender shadow, thin liner, berry-brown lipstick and a little shimmer. Big hoops are non-negotiable, and a purple gemstone pendant helps. Chunky purple platforms or square-toe black boots, plus a compact keyboard on a strap. It feels nostalgic and stays true to her role in the band.
16. Luna Hex Girls Jumpsuit Costume

A deep purple jumpsuit modernizes Luna and solves the long-skirt problem in one move. Choose sleeveless or wide-leg and layer a black mesh shirt under it. A black belt with a purple buckle cinches the waist. Style the short reddish-orange wig with soft flips, then plum shadow, graphic liner and berry lipstick. Silver hoops, dark gloves and a violet pendant keep her classic signals. Purple platform ankle boots or black boots with purple soles. A miniature keyboard purse on a shoulder strap leaves you free to dance, sit and walk.
17. Plus Size Luna Hex Girls Costume

For a plus-size Luna, fabric choice matters more than cut. I'd pick a soft purple wrap dress or a stretch top with a maxi skirt in a knit that moves with you, because stiff fabric means tugging at it all night. A wide black elastic belt and sheer purple sleeves give the stage feel. The short reddish-orange wig with flipped ends establishes her straight away. Plum and charcoal shadow, defined liner and a moisturizing berry lipstick. Light hoops, a purple pendant and gloves that stop below the elbow. Wide-fit platforms or cushioned block heels, and a cardboard keyboard on an adjustable strap.
18. Modest Luna Hex Girls Costume

Luna can be fully covered and still unmistakably purple. A high-neck purple maxi with long sleeves, or a fitted purple tunic over wide-leg pants, plus a black waist belt and long purple gloves. A short copper wig with turned ends keeps the face and neckline visible. Plum eyes, black liner and berry lipstick give definition without going theatrical. Clip-on hoops if your ears aren't pierced. Flat purple boots or black lace-ups, and a small keyboard on a crossbody strap so your hands stay free at parties and conventions.
19. Last-Minute Luna Hex Girls Costume

Luna is quick to throw together because one color does most of the work. A purple top with a purple skirt, pants or dress, and a black belt to tie them together. Temporary copper hair spray works on short hair; I'd test it on a hidden strand first, since some sprays rub off on collars. Or wear an inexpensive reddish-orange bob wig. Purple shadow, black liner and berry lipstick from whatever makeup you have. Big hoops and any violet pendant. Purple shoes if you own them, black platforms if not. Draw keys on a narrow cardboard box and add a ribbon strap.
20. Glam Luna Hex Girls Costume

A glam Luna needs a firm hand on the palette or the sparkle starts to look accidental. A violet sequined jumpsuit or a sparkly purple gown with a fitted waist, sheer black gloves and a crystal-covered purple belt. A copper-orange bob with smooth volume and sharp flips. Lavender shimmer, smoky plum liner, highlighted cheeks and glossy blackberry lipstick. Oversized silver hoops and a faceted purple pendant catch the light. Metallic purple platforms with stable heels. Cover a small keyboard prop in silver and violet paper. Costume parties, themed dances and indoor photo events suit it best.
21. Luna Hex Girls Keyboard Player Costume

Here the keyboard is the centerpiece, so I build the prop first and dress around it. Foam board is the right material: wood or a real keytar gets heavy within an hour. Fit a wide strap so it rests across the front without pressing into your waist, and add a black utility belt behind it for support. A fitted purple top with flared sleeves and a high-waisted purple maxi. The short reddish-orange wig, plum shadow, winged liner and satin berry lipstick. Hoops, a violet pendant and fingerless gloves. Purple platform sneakers or supportive ankle boots.
22. Winter Luna Hex Girls Costume

For a cold night, Luna's purple layers well. A purple sweater dress over black thermal leggings, then a long violet coat or cape belted at the waist in black. The short copper wig sits easily under earmuffs or a black headband; wigs are warmer than you'd think, so this one is kinder in winter than in summer. Plum shadow, waterproof liner and a berry lip stain that holds up outdoors. Keep the hoops and pendant above the high neckline. Lined purple boots or black winter boots with violet laces, black gloves and a keyboard-shaped crossbody.
23. Green Split Dress Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Dusk's long green split dress is her strongest silhouette, and black shorts or opaque tights underneath make the slit worry-free. Add a fitted black shrug or mesh sleeves for more coverage. Two short blonde pigtails with a few face-framing pieces left loose. Olive shadow, black liner, plum lipstick and a touch of silver highlighter. A purple choker and an X necklace provide her contrast. I wrap green ribbon around the shafts of black knee-high platforms and stitch the ends, because glued ribbon slides down by the end of the night. Light drumsticks and optional wrist cuffs.
24. Punk Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Separates turn Dusk punk while her green, black and purple palette stays put. A green plaid skirt, a fitted black top and a cropped faux-leather jacket, with opaque tights or green leggings. Messy blonde pigtails tied with purple. Smudged liner, olive shadow and muted plum lipstick. A purple choker with an X pendant and black wristbands. Chunky lace-up platforms handle a busy night. Drumsticks fit through a belt loop or in a side pouch. I'd stitch a few green patches onto the jacket with big tacking stitches so they come off cleanly later.
25. Dusk Hex Girls Jumpsuit Costume

A dark green jumpsuit turns Dusk into a practical drummer. A fitted utility or wide-leg style over a black mesh top, a purple belt, black wrist cuffs and an X pendant for her original details. Split blonde hair into two small pigtails and clip purple accents at each base. Green shadow, bold liner and soft plum lipstick. Black platform combat boots give support for long stretches of standing. Carry the drumsticks or slide them into the belt when your hands are needed. No trailing skirt means nothing to trip on, while her hair, colors and jewelry all stay.
26. Plus Size Dusk Hex Girls Costume

A stretchy green maxi with a relaxed skirt is where I'd begin a plus-size Dusk. A side slit or a layered high-low hem gives movement without cling, and a black cropped cardigan or fitted long-sleeve underneath lets you adjust coverage. Style a blonde wig into short pigtails secured with purple bands. Olive shimmer, defined liner and berry-plum lipstick. A soft purple choker that doesn't dig in, an X pendant and stretchy black cuffs. Wide-fit platforms or supportive lace-ups with green laces. Foam drumsticks are lighter and safer than wooden ones in a crowd.
27. Modest Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Low pigtails suit a modest Dusk well, because they sit nicely against fuller neck and shoulder coverage. A long green tunic over fitted black pants, or a full-length green dress with long black sleeves, with a structured black belt at the waist. Olive shadow, clean liner and plum lipstick. A purple fabric choker and an X pendant bring contrast to the neckline. Flat black combat boots with green laces and cushioned soles. Keep the drumsticks in a small belt pouch. It stays family-friendly and fits school or community events.
28. Last-Minute Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Any green dress, skirt or pair of pants in your closet can start a last-minute Dusk. Add a fitted black shirt and black boots. Two blonde pigtails, or a cheap blonde wig if your hair is a different color. Green shadow, black liner and plum lipstick. Tie purple ribbon round your neck as a choker and cut an X pendant from silver cardstock. Two craft dowels make drumsticks; I sand the ends quickly so nobody gets a splinter. Green ribbon on your black boots adds a final detail, and in a trio she's easy to spot.
29. Glam Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Sequins and metallics make Dusk party-ready. A dark green sequined midi over black tights with a cropped faux-leather jacket, then polished high pigtails held with jeweled purple bands. Emerald and charcoal shadow, crisp wings and glossy plum lipstick. A velvet purple choker, a silver X pendant and sparkly black cuffs. Green rhinestones on tall black platforms. Silver-painted foam drumsticks are light enough for posing. Sequin dresses snag tights, so I'd tuck a spare pair in your bag. The sticks and pigtails keep her a drummer even at her most dressed-up.
30. Dusk Hex Girls Drummer Costume

A drummer sits, so this Dusk is built for sitting. A sleeveless green tunic with fitted black pants and a cropped black vest is far easier than a long dress on a low stool. Hold the blonde pigtails firmly with purple bands. Smudged liner, moss-green shadow and transfer-resistant plum lipstick. A purple choker, an X pendant and padded black wristbands. Platform sneakers or combat boots over narrow heels. Foam sticks and a small practice drum on a broad strap, sitting above the knees so you can walk through a crowd without kicking it.
31. Winter Dusk Hex Girls Costume

Winter layers can stay in Dusk's colors so she doesn't turn into an unrelated coat. A forest-green sweater dress over black thermal leggings and a belted black coat. A purple scarf wrapped once round the neck stands in for her choker. Style the blonde wig in low pigtails so it fits under a black knit headband. Olive shadow, waterproof liner and long-wearing plum lipstick. Lined combat boots with green laces and textured soles, and black gloves with purple cuffs. Short foam drumsticks slip into an outer pocket or a belt loop.
32. Victorian Hex Girls Trio Costume

A Victorian trio swaps the band's stage wear for high necks and long skirts, and the colors keep the characters clear. Thorn takes a black-and-red bustle dress, long black hair with red streaks, dark lipstick and buttoned boots. Luna wears a purple high-neck dress with puffed sleeves, a short copper bob, hoops and violet boots. Dusk wears green with black lace panels, blonde pigtails, a purple choker and black platforms. Smoky but refined eyes in each member's color. Period gowns get heavy fast, so I'd use lightweight fabric and removable overskirts. A guitar, a compact keyboard and drumsticks confirm the band.
33. Modern Hex Girls Trio Costume

A modern trio puts each color into current concert clothes. Thorn wears a black jumpsuit with red chiffon panels, long black-and-red hair, platform boots and a guitar. Luna picks a violet two-piece set, short copper hair, purple boots and a keyboard bag. Dusk pairs green cargo pants with a fitted black top, blonde pigtails, combat boots and drumsticks. Smoky liner on everyone, lipstick matched to each outfit, and shared silver jewelry. I'd finish with identical black cropped jackets; one repeated piece is what makes three separate outfits look like a single band. Good for anyone who prefers pants.
34. Casual Hex Girls Trio Costume

For school, daytime events or a party where gowns would be a nuisance, go casual. Thorn wears a black T-shirt dress with a red cardigan, red clips in long dark hair, black boots and a mini guitar. Luna pairs a purple sweater and matching skirt with short copper hair, hoops, sneakers and a keyboard purse. Dusk wears a green top, black jeans, blonde pigtails, combat boots and drumsticks. Simple liner and tinted lipstick instead of stage makeup. Matching chokers and dark nails link the three. Each outfit still has the right color, hair, instrument and shoes, which is all a photo needs.
35. Festival Hex Girls Trio Costume

Festival-style costumes cut weight and length for a long day on your feet. Thorn wears a black high-low dress with red mesh panels, long black-and-red braids, a bat necklace, ankle boots and a guitar. Luna wears a purple crop top over a black tank, a flowing violet skirt, short copper hair, platform sneakers and a keyboard bag. Dusk chooses green shorts over opaque tights, a black sleeveless top, blonde pigtails, combat boots and drumsticks. Shimmery eyes in each color and long-wearing lipstick. Matching black belt bags carry the essentials. Leave anything floor-length at home where people are crowding past you.
36. Plus Size Hex Girls Trio Costume

A plus-size trio coordinates best through flexible shapes rather than three identical dresses. Thorn wears a black wrap maxi with red chiffon sleeves, long black-and-red hair, supportive platforms and a light guitar. Luna chooses a purple stretch jumpsuit with a wide belt, short copper hair, hoops, cushioned ankle boots and a keyboard purse. Dusk picks a green empire-waist dress over black leggings, blonde pigtails, wide-fit combat boots and foam drumsticks. Soft chokers and adjustable jewelry. Repeating black footwear and silver accessories unifies the group, while each person gets a cut she's comfortable in.
37. Teen Hex Girls Trio Costume

For teens, I keep the trio age-appropriate and easy to wear to school or a community event. Thorn wears a black skater dress over leggings with a red cardigan, dark hair clips, sneakers and a cardboard guitar. Luna wears a purple long-sleeve top and matching midi skirt, short copper hair, clip-on hoops, boots and a keyboard bag. Dusk pairs a green tunic with black jeans, blonde pigtails, lace-up boots and foam drumsticks. Tinted balm, light shadow and simple liner. Soft fabric chokers and flat shoes are safer, and matching black jackets make the friends look like a real group.
38. Family-Friendly Hex Girls Trio Costume

A family-friendly trio needs coverage, soft accessories and good shoes. Thorn wears a long black dress with red panels, long dark hair with red extensions, simple eye makeup, flat boots and a foam guitar. Luna chooses a purple tunic with wide-leg pants, a short copper wig, clip-on hoops, purple sneakers and a cardboard keyboard. Dusk wears a green dress over black leggings, blonde pigtails, a fabric choker, sneakers and foam drumsticks. Leave out sharp jewelry, heavy props and tall heels. I'd use washable makeup and temporary hair color wherever you can. The instruments and colors keep the band idea clear at any public event.
39. Thorn And Luna Hex Girls Duo Costume

With only two of you, Thorn and Luna make a strong red-and-purple pair. Thorn wears a black maxi with red panels, long black hair with red streaks, smoky makeup, black platforms and a guitar. Luna picks a violet velvet dress, short copper-orange hair, plum eyes, purple boots and a keyboard. Matching silver chokers and dark manicures make the pairing look planned. The long-versus-short hair and the color contrast tell people which character is which before they see the instruments. Light props, stable shoes, and stand side by side in a singer-and-keyboard pose for full-length photos.
40. Thorn And Dusk Hex Girls Duo Costume

Thorn and Dusk make a high-energy singer-and-drummer pair when you can't round up a third. Thorn wears a flowing black-and-red dress, long black hair with red highlights, burgundy eyes, platform boots and a light guitar. Dusk wears a green split dress over black tights, blonde pigtails, olive shadow, a purple choker, combat boots and foam drumsticks. Repeat silver jewelry and black boots across both. Red against green stands out sharply on the shared black base. Secure wig clips are worth the effort if you plan to move. One deliberate band pose stops the pair looking like a trio missing a member.
Wigs for Red Streaks, Copper Bobs and Short Pigtails
Hair carries each character, so the wigs deserve more attention than the dresses. Most party wigs are synthetic, and synthetic fiber behaves differently from real hair.
Thorn's streaks
If you already have long dark hair, clip-in red extensions look more natural than a full wig and stay cooler. On a black wig, place the red pieces near the face and at the crown, where they show from the front. Never put a curling iron on a wig unless the label says the fiber is heat-resistant; ordinary synthetic hair frizzes or melts.
Luna's bob and Dusk's pigtails
Buy Luna's bob already cut to chin length; trimming a long wig into a neat flipped bob is harder than it looks. For Dusk, pigtails pull on the wig cap, so I pin each one through the wig into a wig cap or braided hair underneath, then add a second pin at the base. Brush any wig with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward before wearing, and store it in a bag or on a stand afterward so the shape survives for next year.
Thorn First, Then Fill Out the Band
Thorn, Luna and Dusk are easy to bring to life for Halloween, a cosplay meetup, a themed party or a group photo. The black-and-red, purple and green palettes give you a coordinated base, and wigs, makeup, jewelry, boots and instruments sort out who's who. Follow the original outfits closely or adapt them with jumpsuits, warm layers, modest cuts, casual separates and plus-size shapes. In my experience the costume that gets worn happily all night is the one you can move in. If you're organizing a group, cast Thorn first, since her red and black sets the band's look, then let the others build their colors around her.
