Woody and Bo Peep are one of the easiest couples to get right, because each character comes down to a short list of things people spot from across a room. For Woody that is the yellow checked shirt, the black-and-white cow-print vest, the red bandana, the brown hat and the sheriff badge. For Bo Peep it depends on the era: the pink-and-white shepherdess dress with a bonnet, or the newer blue jumpsuit with a pink sash and cape. When I style this pair, I settle that era question first, because everything else follows from it. Below are 40 ways to wear the duo, from thrifted and no-sew builds to warm-weather, maternity, school and contest versions, with notes on hair, makeup, props and the shoes that get you through the night.

Dress-Era or Jumpsuit-Era Bo Peep
Bo Peep has two looks, and mixing them halfway is the most common way this couple goes wrong. The original porcelain figurine wears a pink-and-white dress with puff sleeves, a full skirt and a bonnet. The later adventure version wears a blue jumpsuit, a pink sash, a cape that can drop into a skirt, arm wraps and a ponytail, and she keeps her crook and her three-headed sheep. Woody looks the same in both, which makes him the easy half.
I ask the couple one question before anything else: is this a sweet, storybook evening or a night of walking, dancing and stairs? The dress suits the first, and the jumpsuit suits the second. Then I check three things on Woody, because they carry him from across a room:
- A shirt that reads yellow with thin red checks, not orange or mustard plaid, unless you are doing a deliberate color variation.
- A cow-print vest with big, irregular black patches; small busy patterns blur into gray at a distance.
- A hat with a proper brim and some height in the crown, which matters more for his outline than the badge.
1. Classic Woody And Bo Peep Couple Costume

This is the version most people picture, so it rewards accuracy more than invention. Woody wears a yellow checked button-down, blue jeans, the cow-print vest, a red bandana, a brown cowboy hat and the badge, with a wide belt, an empty holster and brown boots. Bo Peep gets the pink-and-white polka-dot dress with puff sleeves, a full skirt over white bloomers and a matching bonnet. I'd use a curled blonde wig here rather than curling your own hair, because a set wig holds its shape all evening. Rosy cheeks and pink lips give her the porcelain look, and white tights with low pink or white shoes keep her steady while carrying the crook.
2. Modern Woody And Bo Peep Adventure Costume

The newer Bo Peep is the more practical half of this pair. She wears a pale blue fitted jumpsuit (or blue pants with a matching top) wrapped with a pink sash, plus a short blue cape, pink arm wraps and flat black boots, and her blonde hair goes up in a high ponytail with a pink bow. Woody stays classic: yellow plaid shirt, cow-print vest, jeans, red neckerchief, brown hat, badge, belt and comfortable boots. I like this pairing for anyone who plans to walk a lot, since there is no skirt volume to manage and the cape is the only piece that moves. Keep her crook light and blue so it reads as hers, not a random cane.
3. Easy DIY Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Fabric markers and craft felt get you a long way here. For Woody, I rule thin red grid lines onto a yellow T-shirt with a yardstick, because freehand checks wobble and give the shirt away up close. Layer it with a cow-print felt vest, jeans, a red bandana, brown boots, a cardboard badge and a basic cowboy hat. For Bo Peep, add large pink felt dots to a white skirt and wear it with a pink puff-sleeve blouse. A bonnet made from stiff felt survives longer than poster board, which creases the first time it gets squashed. Finish her with a curved cardboard crook wrapped in blue ribbon, a blonde ponytail, rosy blush, white tights and ballet flats.
4. Last-Minute Woody And Bo Peep Costume

If you have one evening, put your time into the colors, not the construction. Woody needs a yellow plaid shirt, blue jeans, brown ankle boots, a red scarf and any brown western hat, with a felt vest and badge held on by fabric tape. Bo Peep layers a pink cardigan over a white dress, adds a wide pink belt, white tights and flats, and ties a large pink bow over a high blonde ponytail or clip-in extension. A light plastic cane wrapped in blue tape stands in for the crook. Fabric tape is fine for one night, but it lets go in damp air, so I keep a few safety pins in a pocket.
5. Thrifted Woody And Bo Peep Costume

A thrift run can supply almost all of this pair. On Woody's list: a yellow plaid shirt, straight-leg jeans, a brown vest, a red scarf, a cowboy hat and boots that already look worn. Cow-print fabric can go onto the vest with removable adhesive, and a homemade badge pins on top. For Bo Peep, look for a white or pale pink vintage dress with puff sleeves and a full skirt, then sew or glue pink circles across the skirt and add a sash and bonnet. I check thrifted dresses for fabric content before gluing anything, because glue soaks through thin rayon and leaves stiff patches. A painted walking cane, curled blonde hair, rosy makeup, white tights and Mary Janes finish it, and the mix of found pieces looks collected rather than bought in one bag.
6. No-Sew Woody And Bo Peep Costume

No sewing at all is realistic for this pair, as long as you plan the closures. Woody's base is a yellow shirt, jeans, brown boots and a red bandana. Cut a vest shape from cow-print fleece, tie the sides together and stick on a gold foam badge, then add the hat and a wide brown belt. Fleece is my pick here because it never frays, so the cut edges can stay raw. Bo Peep layers a pink top over a white knee-length dress, pins a tulle underskirt beneath for volume and adds removable pink felt circles. A tied pink scarf makes a quick bonnet, and a foam crook, white tights, low pink shoes, a curled blonde ponytail and rosy makeup round her out.
7. Budget Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Most of this budget version is already in a closet. Woody wears a yellow or tan shirt, blue jeans, brown shoes and a red bandana, with a vest cut from scrap felt or an old printed shopping bag, a gold cardstock badge and a borrowed hat. Bo Peep skips the specialty dress: a white skirt and pink blouse with felt or paper dots, a wide waist ribbon and a simple fabric bonnet do the job. Paper dots peel within an hour if they are only glued at the center, so I glue them right to the edge. A curled ponytail, everyday blush and pink lip color, white sneakers and a cardboard-tube crook with a curved foam top keep the cost down.
8. Casual Woody And Bo Peep Costume

For school events and relaxed parties, I scale the costume down until it looks like clothes with a wink. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, slim jeans, a cow-print vest, a red neck scarf, brown lace-up boots, a smaller hat and a sheriff pin. Bo Peep goes for a pale blue blouse with white jeans, a pink belt and a short blue capelet, plus a high blonde ponytail with a pink bow and light makeup. Pink sneakers or flat ankle boots are easy to move in. A rope loop for Woody and a short, light crook for Bo Peep are as far as I'd go with props in a crowded room.
9. Glam Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Sparkle is easy to overdo on this pair, so I let one piece on each person carry it. On Woody, that is a sequined cow-print vest over a tailored yellow plaid shirt, with fitted dark jeans, polished boots, a structured brown hat, a rhinestone badge and a deep red satin scarf. On Bo Peep, a fitted pink-and-white dress with a layered tulle skirt, a crystal-trimmed belt and a satin cape. Glossy blonde curls go under a small decorated bonnet, and shimmer on the eyes with berry-pink lips keeps her face visible. Sparkling low heels and a pearl-wrapped crook finish her. Sequins shed on car seats and couches, so I go over the vest with a lint roller before leaving.
10. Vintage Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Vintage proportions suit Woody surprisingly well, since his clothes already come from an older western look. Put him in high-waisted jeans, a mustard checked shirt, a cropped cow-print vest, pointed boots, a weathered hat, a narrow red neckerchief, a classic buckle and an antique-style badge. Bo Peep wears a tea-length pink-and-white dress with puff sleeves, a fitted waist, lace edging and a structured petticoat. Pin curls under a wide bonnet are the slowest part of this build; I set them the night before so they relax into soft waves by party time. Matte skin, rosy blush, classic pink lipstick, white gloves, low Mary Jane heels and a pastel blue crook keep her firmly in that era.
11. Western Woody And Bo Peep Costume

This one pulls Bo Peep onto Woody's side of the story. He wears a checked yellow western shirt, bootcut jeans, the cow-print vest, a red bandana, a brown hat, embossed boots, a badge, a big buckle and an empty holster. She swaps the dress for a white prairie blouse, a pink riding skirt, a fitted blue vest and a wide sash, with blonde hair braided loosely under a pink bonnet and peach blush on the cheeks. White or tan western boots are far better than heels if the floor is a barn or grass. A blue crook and a small plush sheep keep her tied to the character, which matters once the dress is gone.
12. Country Fair Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Overalls make Woody friendlier for a daytime family event. Dress him in a short-sleeve yellow plaid shirt under denim overalls, add the cow-print vest, a red bandana, a straw-colored hat, brown work boots, a badge and a braided belt. Bo Peep wears a white eyelet dress with pink polka dots, a blue waist sash, puff sleeves and a matching sunbonnet, with braids or curled pigtails, light blush and tinted balm. White ankle socks and pink canvas shoes handle grass and gravel. I'd skip a wig for outdoor daytime events, because synthetic fibers get hot and tangle in the wind. A light crook and a small plush sheep finish the pair.
13. Warm-Weather Woody And Bo Peep Costume

In heat, the trick is keeping the color signals while dropping the layers. Woody wears a short-sleeve yellow checked shirt, light denim shorts, a thin cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, a cowboy hat, brown ankle boots and a foam badge that adds no weight. Bo Peep wears a sleeveless white dress with pink spots, a pale blue sash and fitted shorts underneath, and a pink bow headband replaces the bonnet over a high ponytail. Cream blush and waterproof mascara hold up better than powder on a hot night. White sneakers or ventilated flats help, and a hollow plastic crook is the right weight. I leave the hat off indoors until photos; a felt hat traps more heat than anything else in this costume.
14. Cold-Weather Woody And Bo Peep Costume

For a cold night outside, I build the warmth underneath so the signature pieces stay on top. Woody gets a thermal shirt under the yellow plaid button-down, a lined cow-print vest, straight jeans, a red scarf, insulated brown boots and neutral gloves that match his belt. Bo Peep wears a long-sleeve pale blue jumpsuit over thermal leggings, a pink waist sash and a fleece-lined blue cape, with a pink knit headband shaped like a bow over her ponytail. Cold air brings out rosy cheeks on its own, which suits her. Waterproof pink lipstick, black winter boots and a crook wrapped in blue fabric round it off. Fabric on the crook is warmer to grip than bare plastic.
15. Rainy-Weather Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Rain is where cardboard and paper props fail first, so this version starts with materials that shrug off water. Woody puts a clear rain jacket over the plaid shirt and cow-print vest so both stay visible, with dark jeans, a red bandana, waterproof boots, a plastic badge and a hat that can take a soaking. Bo Peep wears a pale blue raincoat over her dress or jumpsuit, a pink bow on a blonde ponytail and pink rain boots. Water-resistant mascara, cream blush and tinted balm survive drizzle. Swap any paper crook for a plastic one wrapped in waterproof blue tape. I also skip felt for the vest dots in rain; wet felt sags and can bleed color onto a white dress.
16. Plus-Size Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Fit decides whether a plus-size version is comfortable for a whole evening, so I plan around stretch and adjustable pieces. Woody wears a relaxed yellow plaid shirt, stretch jeans, an open cow-print vest, a red bandana, supportive boots and a hat with an adjustable inner band, plus a flexible belt and pinned badge. Bo Peep can go for a soft pink fit-and-flare dress or a pale blue stretch jumpsuit, with the waist marked by a comfortable sash rather than a rigid corset. A short cape gives her character without pinning the arms. A high ponytail, rosy makeup, a hollow crook and cushioned flats or wide-fit ankle boots keep the focus on the colors, which is what makes the pair read.
17. Maternity Woody And Bo Peep Costume

For a pregnant Bo Peep, I place every waist detail above the bump or leave it out. An empire-waist white dress with pink dots gives plenty of room, and a stretchy pale blue maternity jumpsuit works with the pink sash tied high. A light cape that sits behind the shoulders adds the character without bulk. Woody stays exactly as expected: yellow plaid shirt, cow-print vest, jeans, red bandana, brown hat, badge and supportive boots. Supportive white sneakers or cushioned boots beat heels by the second hour. A ponytail with a pink bow, gentle rosy makeup, a light crook and a small plush sheep on a wrist loop keep her hands free when she needs them.
18. Gender-Swapped Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Swapping who plays which character works because the costume pieces carry the identity, not the wearer. The Woody look can be a yellow checked blouse, a cropped cow-print vest, a denim skirt or jeans, a red neck scarf, a cowboy hat, brown boots and the badge, with softly waved hair and warm neutral makeup. The Bo Peep look can be pale blue trousers, a white shirt, a pink sash, a short blue cape, black boots and pink wrist wraps. A neatly styled blonde wig does most of the work for her side, so I spend money there first. A sturdy, light crook and a touch of rosy color finish it.
19. Matching Denim Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Denim ties these two together in a way that holds up to a long night. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, medium-wash jeans, a cow-print denim vest, a red bandana, a brown hat, a badge and western boots. Bo Peep wears a pale blue denim jumpsuit with rolled cuffs, a pink belt, a short cape and flat black ankle boots, with a high ponytail and a structured pink bow. Soft pink blush, mascara and a satin lip keep her makeup approachable, and a crook painted to match her denim with pink ribbon on the handle links the props. Denim takes knocks, crowds and car rides without wrinkling much, which is why I suggest it for trick-or-treating.
20. Pink And Blue Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Here the palette drifts toward Bo Peep's colors, which softens Woody without losing him. He wears a pale yellow plaid shirt, light-wash jeans, a brown vest, a blue neck scarf, a tan hat and brown boots, and his badge and belt must stay visible because they now do most of the identifying. Bo Peep combines a pale blue jumpsuit with a pink cape, pink sash, matching wrist wraps and black ankle boots, with a big pink bow on her ponytail and pale blue eyeshadow echoing the outfit. A blue crook trimmed with pink ribbons finishes her. I'd only try this version on a couple who plan to stand together most of the night; apart, a blue-scarfed Woody is harder to place.
21. Monochrome Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Sepia is a clever idea, but it only lands if every single piece stays in the cream-to-brown range. Woody wears a tan checked shirt, brown jeans, a cream cow-print vest, a rust neckerchief, a brown hat, matching boots and a bronze badge and buckle. Bo Peep wears a cream dress with beige dots, a taupe sash, a lace bonnet, ivory tights and cream Mary Janes, with a beige-toned curled wig, brown eyeshadow, muted blush and nude lipstick. A tan-painted crook ties it together. One bright phone case or red coat breaks the old-photograph effect, so I tell couples to plan their bags and outerwear too. The silhouettes do the rest.
22. Black-And-White Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Grayscale needs contrast to work, or the pair just looks washed out. Woody wears a gray checked shirt, black jeans, a black-and-white cow-print vest, a charcoal bandana, a gray hat, black boots, a silver badge and a gray buckle. Bo Peep wears a white dress with gray dots, a black waist sash, a gray bonnet, white tights and black Mary Janes, with a silver-blonde curled wig. Her makeup is where the cartoon effect comes from: pale foundation, gray eyeshadow, firm eyeliner and a muted gray-pink lip. I'd test the gray lipstick before the night, as some shades look bruised rather than vintage under warm room lights. Paint the crook silver or matte gray and leave colorful coats at home.
23. Pastel Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Pastels make a sweet daytime version of this couple. Woody wears a butter-yellow checked shirt, pale blue jeans, a cream-and-brown cow-print vest, a dusty coral bandana, a beige hat, light brown boots and a brushed gold badge. Bo Peep wears a baby-blue jumpsuit, a blush sash and a lavender cape, with loose waves pulled into a high ponytail and an oversized pink bow, plus peach blush, lavender shadow and glossy lips. A pale blue crook with a white handle finishes her. Pale colors show every smudge, so I keep a stain wipe in her pocket and dress Woody last if there are small kids around. Daylight flatters this palette far more than a dim party.
24. Sparkly Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Glitter pieces need a limit, and I set it at one sparkly item per person plus the crook. Woody wears a yellow checked shirt with a glitter-trimmed cow-print vest, dark jeans, a metallic red scarf, a brown hat, polished boots, a sparkling badge and a rhinestone buckle. Bo Peep wears a lightly shimmering pale blue jumpsuit or a pink-and-white dress with a sequined tulle skirt, and a glittery pink bow on her ponytail. Luminous foundation, sparkling eyes, rosy blush and pink gloss suit the party. Silver ankle boots or crystal-trimmed flats add shine without the wobble of heels, and iridescent ribbon on the blue crook catches the light. Past that, the characters start to disappear under the shine.
25. Formal Woody And Bo Peep Costume

A dressy event means swapping costume fabrics for real tailoring. Woody wears a mustard plaid dress shirt, fitted navy trousers, a structured cow-print waistcoat, a red silk neck scarf, a brown felt hat, polished leather boots, a refined sheriff brooch and a matching belt. Bo Peep wears a tea-length pale blue or pink cocktail dress with puff sleeves, a defined waist and a softly layered skirt, with an elegant curled updo under a small bow headpiece. Pearl earrings, rosy makeup and satin lipstick keep it grown-up. I'd choose low block heels for her and a slim decorative crook she can lean against a wall during dinner. Matching fabric quality between the two is what keeps it from looking like a dressed-up party store set.
26. Pajama Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Pajamas are the most comfortable route into this couple, and nobody fusses with a costume at a movie night. Woody wears a yellow plaid pajama shirt, soft blue lounge pants, a fleece cow-print vest, a red neck scarf, a light hat and brown house shoes shaped like boots, with a fabric badge that will not scratch. Bo Peep wears a pale blue pajama set, a pink robe styled as a cape and a wide pink sash, with a relaxed ponytail and soft bow. Tinted moisturizer, cream blush and lip balm are enough makeup. Pink slippers and a foam crook finish her. I choose fleece for Woody's vest here because it is soft enough to sleep in if the night runs late.
27. Athletic Woody And Bo Peep Costume

For a costume run or field day, I treat this as athletic wear first and costume second. Woody wears a breathable yellow checked athletic shirt, stretch denim-look joggers, a light cow-print vest, a red sweatband-style neckerchief, a brown cap shaped like a cowboy hat, supportive sneakers, a soft sheriff patch and a belt bag. Bo Peep wears pale blue leggings with a matching top, a pink waist wrap, a cropped blue cape, black running shoes and a pink bow on a high ponytail. Waterproof mascara, cream blush and tinted balm hold up to sweat. Pin the cape at both shoulders, as a single tie at the throat pulls uncomfortably once you start running. A foam crook and plush sheep wrist accessory finish her.
28. College Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Campus nights mean walking between places with a phone, keys and maybe a jacket, so this version is built around carrying things. Woody pairs a yellow plaid shirt with jeans, a thrifted cow-print vest, a red bandana, brown boots, a basic hat and a foam badge, and a plain brown backpack carries both people's things. Bo Peep wears a pale blue romper or jumpsuit, a pink belt, a short capelet, black ankle boots and pink wrist wraps, with a bowed ponytail, blush, mascara and pink lipstick. A collapsible crook is the smart choice; a full-length one ends up leaning in a corner and forgotten. Layers that can come off indoors save a lot of fiddling.
29. Office-Friendly Woody And Bo Peep Costume

At work, I keep the characters to a color story and two small details. Woody wears a yellow checked dress shirt, navy trousers, brown shoes, a slim cow-print vest, a red neck scarf and a small sheriff pin, and the hat stays at his desk for photos if dress rules are strict. Bo Peep wears a pale blue blouse, a pink midi skirt, a blue belt and a cropped cardigan that reads as a cape, with a polished ponytail and small pink bow. Neutral eyes, rosy blush and soft pink lipstick look professional. Low block heels or loafers carry her through a full day. Bring out the short crook only for the costume contest or group photo.
30. School-Friendly Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Schools usually ask for costumes kids can sit, run and use the bathroom in without help, and most ban anything that looks like a weapon. So Woody wears a yellow plaid T-shirt, jeans, a felt cow-print vest, a red bandana, a foam hat and brown sneakers, with a fabric badge sewn on rather than pinned. Bo Peep wears a white long-sleeve top with a pink polka-dot skirt, stretchy shorts underneath, a soft bonnet headband, white tights and pink sneakers. I'd skip the heavy wig and empty holster at school. A touch of blush and tinted balm is plenty, and a soft foam crook replaces the rigid one for parades.
31. Kids Woody And Bo Peep Costume

With small kids, I dress for the moment the costume needs to come off fast. Woody's outfit is a yellow checked cotton shirt, pull-on jeans, a soft cow-print vest, a red bandana, a foam hat, a fabric badge and brown sneakers, with no stiff belt to dig into a tummy. Bo Peep wears a white cotton dress with pink dots, puff sleeves, a soft tulle underskirt, stretchy tights and closed-toe pink shoes. A bonnet-style headband stays on better than a tied bonnet, which gets pulled off at the first itch. Pigtails or a simple ponytail extension, child-safe face color for rosy cheeks, a plush sheep and a flexible foam crook keep both kids happy.
32. Teen Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Teens usually want the characters to look current, and this version leans into that. Woody wears a cropped yellow plaid overshirt over a white tee, high-waisted jeans, the cow-print vest, a red bandana, a brown hat, western ankle boots, a badge and a simple belt. Bo Peep pairs a pale blue fitted jumpsuit with a pink sash, short cape, pink arm wraps and chunky black boots, plus a high blonde ponytail with a large bow. Winged liner, pink blush and gloss bring the makeup up to date. A light blue crook and a small plush sheep bag finish her. Chunky boots are my pick for teens who will be on their feet all night.
33. Sibling Woody And Bo Peep Costume

When siblings share this pair, I try to give both kids the same comfort level, or one will be in tears by the third house. Woody wears a yellow checked shirt, elastic-waist jeans, a felt cow-print vest, a red scarf, a soft cowboy hat, brown sneakers, a fabric badge and a light belt. Bo Peep wears a white-and-pink cotton dress or a pale blue jumpsuit, whichever version she likes, with a pink sash, soft cape and secure bow headband. A ponytail and a touch of child-safe rosy color are enough. White sneakers or flexible black boots handle running, and a foam crook and plush sheep give both kids something to hold in family photos.
34. Best-Friend Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Friends can wear this pair without any couple overtones, and a small shared detail makes the link obvious. Woody wears a bright yellow plaid shirt, straight jeans, the cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, a brown hat, a badge and cowboy boots. Bo Peep wears a blue jumpsuit, pink sash, cropped cape, black boots and pink wrist wraps, with a high blonde ponytail and a statement bow, rosy cheeks and pink lips. Friendship bracelets in red, pink and blue tie the two outfits together. Woody can carry a soft rope loop while Bo Peep holds a light blue crook. I like this version for friends of any gender, since nothing in it depends on who wears which side.
35. Role-Reversal Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Role reversal changes the attitude, not the parts list. Woody goes softer and polished: a fitted yellow checked shirt, tailored jeans, a cropped cow-print vest, a red satin scarf, curled hair, subtle warm makeup and sleek brown boots, still wearing the hat and badge. Bo Peep takes the tougher western role in a pale blue utility jumpsuit, a pink belt, a structured cape, black riding boots and a practical ponytail, with strong brows, rosy blush and neutral lipstick. She still carries the crook and wears the pink wrist wraps. As long as every signature color and accessory stays on the right person, people get the joke within a second or two.
36. Handmade Felt Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Felt is cheap and light, and it cuts cleanly without a sewing machine. Woody's vest comes from black-and-white felt over a yellow shirt and blue jeans, with a red felt bandana, a foam badge, a brown felt hat, a belt and comfortable boots. Bo Peep wears a basic white dress covered in pink felt circles, plus felt puff-sleeve overlays, a blue waist sash and a pink bonnet stiffened with interfacing. I avoid gluing felt to polyester, because the glue pops off once the fabric flexes; a few hand stitches at each dot hold far longer. A curled blonde wig, rosy makeup, white tights and pink flats finish her, and her crook is foam pipe insulation over a light tube covered in blue felt.
37. Cardboard Prop Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Layered cardboard turns plain clothes into a costume, as long as you seal it. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, jeans, a cow-print fabric vest, a red bandana, a brown hat and boots, and his badge, buckle and empty decorative holster are cut from layered cardboard painted gold and brown. Bo Peep wears a pink-and-white dress with a blue sash, a bonnet, white tights and Mary Janes, with curled blonde hair, rosy cheeks and pink lipstick. Her crook is a long cardboard tube with a curved corrugated top, wrapped in paper tape before painting it blue. I sand or tape every cut edge, since raw cardboard corners scratch skin and catch on other people in a crowd.
38. Minimalist Woody And Bo Peep Costume

Minimalism works for this pair because the colors are so specific. Woody wears a plain yellow shirt, blue jeans, brown boots, a red bandana, a cowboy hat and a small badge, and the vest can shrink to a cow-print pocket sewn onto the shirt. Bo Peep wears a pale blue jumpsuit with a pink belt, black ankle boots and a pink bow on a blonde ponytail, with light blush, pink lips and a plain blue crook. That is enough. If I had to cut one more thing, it would never be the cow print or the crook; those two carry the recognition when everything else is simplified.
39. Deluxe Woody And Bo Peep Costume

A contest build is where extra layers and careful matching pay off. Woody wears a tailored yellow checked shirt, a lined cow-print vest, dark denim, a silk red neckerchief, a structured hat, an embroidered badge, a wide belt, an empty decorative holster and polished western boots. For a finishing touch fans notice, I write 'Andy' on the sole of one boot. Bo Peep wears a fitted pink-and-white dress with puff sleeves, lace trim, a full petticoat, bloomers and a structured bonnet, or a tailored blue jumpsuit with a reversible cape. Smooth curls, porcelain blush, defined lashes, satin pink lips, gloves, white tights, low heels and a sturdy blue crook bring her to the same level as Woody.
40. Modern Mashup Woody And Bo Peep Costume

This last version lets Bo Peep move between both eras in one night. Woody keeps everything classic: the yellow checked shirt, cow-print vest, red bandana, jeans, hat, badge and brown boots, cut a little more tailored to sit beside her. She wears pale blue pants under a short, removable pink-and-white overskirt, a fitted white top, a pink sash, a blue cape and black ankle boots, with a high ponytail framed by a bonnet-shaped bow. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and pink lips blend the porcelain and adventure looks. I attach the overskirt with snaps instead of hook-and-loop tape, which grabs the tulle and scratches through tights.
Making a Crook That Survives a Crowd
The crook is the prop most likely to break, bend or hit someone, so I build it light and soft rather than strong. Here is the method I use for most of these looks:
- Start with a light wooden dowel or thin PVC pipe cut to about shoulder height. Taller than that and it catches door frames and ceiling decorations.
- Bend a wire coat hanger into the hook shape and tape it firmly to the top of the pole, overlapping a hand's width down the shaft.
- Slide foam pipe insulation over both the pole and the hook. It hides the wire and softens any bump into a stranger.
- Wrap the whole thing in blue tape, ribbon or fabric instead of painting it. Paint cracks on foam as soon as the crook flexes.
- Add a rubber chair-leg cap to the bottom so it does not skid on hard floors or poke through a lawn.
Skip hot glue for the hook joint if you will be outside on a cold night. It turns brittle in cold air and lets go at the worst moment, and tape or zip ties hold far better.
Wigs, Hat Fit and the Small Fixes
A cheap blonde wig is usually the weakest part of Bo Peep. Brush it gently with a wide-tooth comb before you style it, spray it lightly with water and fabric softener to calm the frizz, and keep it away from candles and heaters, since synthetic fiber frizzes and melts near heat. If she has her own blonde or light hair, a ponytail with a big bow often looks better than a shiny wig.
Party-store cowboy hats tend to run large and slip forward over Woody's eyes. A strip of foam weatherstrip tape inside the band fixes that in a minute. For the vest, fleece is my first pick because it does not fray. Felt is fine for one or two nights but pills where the arms rub, and printed cotton needs its edges turned or bound. Store the pieces flat with the badge unpinned, and the whole set is ready again next year.
Get the Vest and the Crook Right First
Every version above starts from the same signals, so begin there and adjust for your night. Woody is recognized by his yellow shirt, cow-print vest, red bandana, hat and badge. Bo Peep becomes clear once blonde hair, a bow or bonnet and the crook join her pink dress or blue jumpsuit. After that, choose fabrics and layers for the weather, the venue and how long you will be on your feet. In my experience the pairs that look best at the end of the night are the ones that planned their shoes and props as carefully as the outfits.
