A duo costume only works when both people have a clear role and neither one is stuck holding the joke. These fifty pairings cover pop-culture characters, classic monsters, food combinations, funny concepts, fantasy looks and simple DIY ideas, and each one comes with clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes for both halves. Most suit couples, best friends, siblings or any two people who want to coordinate without it reading as romantic. I've noted where the roles swap easily across genders, sizes and ages, and where a piece is likely to give you trouble on the night.

Giving Each Half of a Pair the Same Amount of Costume
The most common duo problem I see isn't a bad character choice. It's one person in a full head-to-toe build and the other in a T-shirt and ears. In photos, the half-dressed partner looks like they wandered in, and the pair stops reading as a pair.
I balance a duo by giving both people the same number of layers of costume: a base outfit, a hair or headpiece detail, a makeup detail and one prop. They don't need to be equally complicated, but each one has to carry all four. If one character is naturally simple, like Velma next to Daphne or the tour guide next to the tourist, I add one more accessory to that side.
Three ways to make two outfits read as one idea
- Repeat one colour on both people, even if it's only a scarf, socks or a bow tie.
- Match the silhouette: both in flares, both in short capes, both in knee-length skirts.
- Share a prop that only makes sense with both of you there, such as a treasure map, a ticket or a detector.
- Stand on the same side for photos each time, so the pairing reads the same way in every picture.
Before the night, put both outfits on and take one photo from across the room. If a stranger couldn't tell you came together, add a shared colour before you add anything else.
1. Barbie And Ken Duo Costume

Barbie and Ken come down to two coordinated resort outfits in the same pink family. One of you wears a pink gingham dress or a vest-and-skirt set with a blonde ponytail, rosy makeup, sunglasses and white heels or sneakers. The other wears a striped beach shirt, pastel shorts, a blonde wig and slip-ons. I'd pick one accent shade, turquoise or sunny yellow, and repeat it on both of you, because that small echo is what makes two separate outfits look like a set. White platform sneakers keep the doll proportions if heels won't last the night.
2. Wednesday And Enid Duo Costume

Wednesday and Enid read straight away because their wardrobes are opposites. Wednesday wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, opaque tights, black loafers and two smooth braids, with pale makeup and softly smudged liner. Enid's fan-made look is a colourful striped sweater, pastel skirt, bright tights, chunky sneakers and a blonde wig with pink and blue tips. The wig is the part I'd plan ahead: tip-dyed wigs shed colour onto a pale collar, so give it a quick rinse in cool water before wearing. Bright nails for Enid, a black backpack for Wednesday and a fuzzy pastel bag finish the contrast. Friends with opposite personal styles get this one right without trying.
3. Glinda And Elphaba Duo Costume

Glinda and Elphaba get their drama from contrast, not matching. Glinda wears a full pink tulle dress, sparkling flats, a curled blonde wig, shimmer makeup and a light crown, and carries a cardboard star wand. Elphaba needs a long black dress, a structured cape, a pointed hat, black lace-up boots and green face makeup, with a dark braid or waves under the hat. Green on the face alone looks like a mask, so I carry it down the neck and onto the backs of the hands. Set it with translucent powder, because green cream paint transfers onto black fabric and Glinda's pink tulle the moment you hug.
4. Mario And Luigi Duo Costume

Mario and Luigi are about the easiest pairing to pull from everyday clothes. Both of you wear denim overalls, white gloves, brown work boots and long-sleeve shirts, red for Mario and green for Luigi, under matching caps with felt initials. I stitch those initials on with a running stitch around the edge; glued felt peels off a cap's curved front within an hour. Mario gets a short brown mustache, Luigi a narrower one. Foam mushrooms or cardboard racing flags make harmless props, and natural makeup keeps the colours doing the work. It's warm, walkable and fits adults, teenagers or siblings.
5. Princess Peach And Princess Daisy Duo Costume

Princess Peach and Princess Daisy are the royal pair for friends who like a polished look. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, white gloves, a blonde wig, blue earrings, a small crown and pink flats. Daisy wears a yellow and orange dress, white gloves, orange earrings, a brown or auburn wig and a floral crown. Rosy cheeks, soft eyes and glossy lips suit both. I'd choose knee-length dresses over floor-length gowns if there's dancing, and give both of you the same sleeve shape, since matching silhouettes are what make two colours read as a pair. Small star purses hold phones and keys.
6. Shaggy And Velma Duo Costume

Shaggy and Velma are cheap to thrift and easy to wear all night. Shaggy needs a loose green tee, brown flares, tousled light-brown hair and worn-in sneakers, plus a drawn-on goatee and an oversized cardboard sandwich. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red flats, a short brown bob wig and square black glasses. Her orange is where people go wrong; rust and coral sweaters look like a different character, so match it to a screenshot. Warm blush and natural makeup keep both approachable. No capes, no masks, nothing restrictive, which suits a long indoor party.
7. Daphne And Velma Duo Costume

Daphne and Velma suit two people who both want colourful, put-together outfits. Daphne wears a purple mini or knee-length dress, green neck scarf, pink tights, purple flats and a long red wig with a headband, with lavender shadow and soft pink lips. Velma wears an orange sweater, red skirt, orange socks, red shoes, a blunt brown bob and square glasses. A magnifying glass or notebook for Velma and a structured purple bag for Daphne carry the story. I always slip fitted shorts under shorter skirts for these two; 1960s hemlines ride up when you sit on low party sofas.
8. Lilo And Stitch Duo Costume

Lilo and Stitch is a playful pair that holds up at an active event, and it's lovely for an adult with a child. Lilo wears a red dress printed or painted with big white leaves, flat sandals, long dark hair and a flower clip. If you're painting the leaves, use fabric paint and let it cure fully, or it cracks when the dress creases. Stitch wears a blue hoodie and joggers, blue sneakers, soft gloves and a headband with big blue-and-pink felt ears. I cut those ears with a wire edge sewn into the seam so they hold their shape instead of flopping. A light blue belly panel on removable fabric tape, a toy ukulele and a flower garland finish the pair.
9. Woody And Jessie Duo Costume

Woody and Jessie are a cheerful western pair with no complicated pieces. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, cow-print vest, jeans, brown boots, a red neckerchief and a brown cowboy hat, with a felt badge and neat brown hair. Jessie wears a white western shirt with yellow accents, jeans or a denim skirt over leggings, a red hat, a braided red wig and sturdy boots, with peachy blush and freckles. Cheap braided wigs frizz at the end of the plait, so I tie the tail with a small elastic before the bow. A soft rope coil or toy horse makes a safe prop.
10. Buzz And Woody Duo Costume

Buzz and Woody differ so much in colour and shape that the pair reads even from closet pieces. Woody wears a yellow checked shirt, jeans, cow-print vest, red scarf, cowboy hat and brown boots. Buzz starts with a white tracksuit or fitted white top and pants with green and purple felt panels, white sneakers, soft gloves and a purple hood. The wings are the build to plan: light craft foam on two elastic shoulder loops, with the strap stitched to a ribbon across the chest so the wings don't swing around to the side. Silver shadow gives Buzz the space finish.
11. Peter Pan And Tinker Bell Duo Costume

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell are a forest pair for friends, couples or siblings. Peter wears a green tunic over fitted pants or leggings, a brown belt, a green cap with a red feather and soft brown ankle boots, with tousled hair. Tinker Bell wears a pale green dress, sheer wings, a blonde bun wig, sparkly eye makeup and green ballet flats. I cut a jagged leaf hem on both costumes; it ties the two outfits together better than any matching accessory. Felt toe covers over plain shoes add the pointed look. Carry gold paper stars in a pouch instead of loose glitter, and choose bendy wings if you'll be in costume for hours.
12. Alice And White Rabbit Duo Costume

Alice and the White Rabbit give you a storybook pair built from vintage-looking pieces. Alice wears a pale blue knee-length dress, white apron, white tights, black flats and a blonde wig held with a black ribbon, and carries a teacup or storybook bag. The Rabbit wears a white shirt, red or burgundy vest, tailored trousers, ear headband, white gloves and comfortable dress shoes, with a fluffy tail and a cardboard pocket watch on a ribbon. I'd put the watch on a long ribbon so it swings at waist height; a clock clutched in a gloved hand all night ends up crumpled. White accents around the nose and brows hint at rabbit without a mask.
13. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Duo Costume

Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf can go cute or grown-up. Red wears a white blouse, black skirt or plain dress, a red hooded cape, opaque tights and brown lace-ups, with soft braids, rosy makeup and a woven basket of fabric flowers. The Wolf wears grey pants, a grey sweater or faux-fur vest, furry boot covers, gloves and a soft ear-and-tail set, with grey shading at the temples and a painted black nose. Faux fur sheds on everything near it, so I run a lint roller over the vest and give it a shake outside before the party. Thermals under both make it practical for an outdoor night.
14. Dorothy And Scarecrow Duo Costume

Dorothy and the Scarecrow use familiar colours and easy finds. Dorothy wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white puff-sleeve blouse, white socks, red flats and two braided pigtails tied with blue ribbon, plus a little wicker basket with a plush dog. Red glitter flats shed, so I paint plain flats with a coat of fabric glue and fine glitter and seal them the day before. The Scarecrow wears a plaid shirt, patched brown pants, a rope belt, floppy hat and brown work boots, with raffia or yellow felt at the cuffs rather than loose straw. Drawn stitches by the mouth and an orange nose finish him.
15. Beetlejuice And Lydia Duo Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia suit two people who like gothic comedy. Beetlejuice wears a black-and-white striped suit, white shirt, black boots and a messy white wig with a hint of green, with pale skin, smoky eyes and shaded cheekbones. Lydia wears a layered red dress or a black lace dress, dark tights, black ankle boots and a teased black wig with short bangs, plus cool-toned makeup and deep berry lips. Striped suits are hard to thrift, and I've had better luck adding black ribbon stripes to a plain white blazer. A vintage camera and a striped paper booklet are the props.
16. Jack And Sally Duo Costume

Jack and Sally have a handmade, storybook look that rewards a little sewing. Jack wears a black pinstriped suit, white shirt, bat-shaped bow tie and black dress shoes, with a smooth bald cap or slicked hair, white face makeup, black eye shading and a curved smile. Sally wears a patchwork dress, striped tights, black flats and a long red wig, with pale blue skin, drawn stitch lines and berry lips. The patchwork is the part I'd build first; a thrifted shift dress with mismatched squares tacked on by hand gives you the seams without a pattern. A plush ghost dog or a felt pumpkin completes it.
17. Gomez And Morticia Duo Costume

Gomez and Morticia are the elegant option for a couple or two friends who like formal gothic clothes. Gomez wears a dark pinstriped suit, white shirt, bow tie, polished black shoes and combed dark hair, with a thin costume mustache and a single artificial rose. Morticia needs a long fitted black dress with flared sleeves or hem, black heels or pointed flats and a waist-length straight black wig, with pale skin, sharp brows, smoky eyes and dark red lips. That long hem gets stepped on, so I'd have it shortened to just clear the shoe. Very long wigs tangle at the back where they rub a chair; a light mist of wig spray helps.
18. Wednesday And Pugsley Duo Costume

Wednesday and Pugsley make a sibling costume that also works for two friends. Wednesday wears a black collared dress over a white blouse, black tights, loafers and two long braids, with matte pale makeup and softly darkened eyes. Pugsley wears a black-and-white striped tee, black shorts or trousers, tall socks and black sneakers, with hair close to the head or a short dark wig. The stripe width matters more than you'd think: thin pinstripes vanish in photos, so I look for bold stripes at least a finger wide. A vintage-looking book and a striped lunchbox are the props, and cardigans or coats layer over both.
19. Coraline And Wybie Duo Costume

Coraline and Wybie are dressed for rain, which is honestly half of October. Coraline wears a bright yellow hooded raincoat, cuffed jeans, a striped shirt, yellow boots and a short blue bob wig, with freckles and a blue messenger bag or a stuffed black cat. Wybie wears a dark rain jacket, black pants, a striped shirt, gloves, boots and textured dark hair, with costume goggles around the neck rather than over his eyes. A small handmade doll can be the shared prop. I'd stick to sewing button eyes onto the doll and leave both faces clear; anything over your eyes is a hazard on a dark street.
20. Ghost Hunter And Friendly Ghost Duo Costume

A ghost hunter and a friendly ghost don't depend on any franchise. The hunter wears tan coveralls, black boots, utility gloves and a backpack built from painted cardboard boxes and flexible tubing, with a name patch and clear safety glasses. I tape the tubing into the box from inside with duct tape, because hot glue lets go of plastic tubing the first time it bends. The ghost wears layered white clothing, white sneakers, a sheer white cape and pale waves or a white wig, with pearl highlighter and silver accents. A cardboard detector links the two. Skip the sheet over the face so the ghost can see and talk.
21. Angel And Devil Duo Costume

An angel and a devil give you clear contrast from simple pieces. The angel wears a white dress or jumpsuit, white sneakers, feather-free fabric wings and a silver halo headband, with loose curls and pearl shadow. The devil wears a red dress, suit or matching top and pants, black boots, a red horn headband and a pointed fabric tail, with red liner and glossy lips. I stuff that tail lightly with fiberfill and sew a short loop to slip over a belt, so it hangs rather than dragging on the floor. Silver star accessories for one and a small red bag for the other keep it readable in modest or cold-weather versions.
22. Sun And Moon Duo Costume

A sun and moon pair is gender-neutral and easy to customize. The sun wears a gold or yellow jumpsuit, dress or separates with metallic sneakers and a radiant crown cut from craft foam, plus warm gold shadow and big, loose hair. The moon wears navy or silver decorated with felt stars, silver boots and a crescent headpiece, with cool silver makeup and a dark blue wig or sleek hair. Foam crowns tip forward as the night goes on; I glue a strip of felt inside the band so it grips the hair. Short capes on both of you add movement in photos.
23. Peanut Butter And Jelly Duo Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is the food pairing I suggest for people who want a laugh without a full-body suit. Both of you wear tan or brown pants, neutral sneakers and foam-board sandwich panels on ribbon straps, one with a tan painted centre and one with purple or red fabric for jelly. A beige shirt and brown cap go with peanut butter, a purple or berry shirt and headband with jelly. Keep makeup natural with warm brown shadow on one and berry blush on the other. End the panels above the knee, and only carry cardboard spreading knives if they're rounded and plainly decorative.
24. Milk And Cookies Duo Costume

Milk and cookies is a sweet pair built from basic clothing. Milk wears all white, white sneakers, a blue-and-white carton hat, pearly makeup and a removable fabric label on a white tunic or sweatshirt. Cookie wears a tan top and pants covered in round dark-brown felt chips, brown sneakers and a cookie-shaped headband, with bronze shadow and warm blush. I sew the chips at the centre only, so they sit slightly raised and look baked in rather than stuck flat. A striped reusable straw fixed to the milk hat adds height, and a cardboard tray for the cookie finishes the joke.
25. Ketchup And Mustard Duo Costume

Ketchup and mustard is a last-minute duo made from two matching sweatsuits. One of you wears red joggers, a red hoodie and red sneakers with a pointed felt bottle-cap hat; the other wears the same in bright yellow. Big white oval labels go on the fronts with removable fabric tape. That tape holds well on cotton fleece but lets go on slick polyester, so check your hoodie's fabric before you rely on it. Tuck hair under the hats, match the eye makeup to your colour, and make little condiment-packet bags from painted paper gift bags. Skip rigid bottle shapes so you can sit down.
26. Salt And Pepper Duo Costume

Salt and pepper is a minimal pair for almost any age. Salt wears a white or pale grey dress, jumpsuit or suit with white sneakers and a silver shaker hat; Pepper wears the same silhouette in black or charcoal with black shoes and a matching hat. Cut felt circles for the shaker tops rather than open holes, and use silver shadow for Salt and smoky grey for Pepper. The pair only makes sense if the shapes match closely, so I'd have you try your outfits on side by side before the night. Tiny shaker bags from cylindrical containers, and S and P patches if guests need a hint.
27. Bee And Beekeeper Duo Costume

A bee and a beekeeper balance a cute look with practical workwear. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top, black skirt or pants, sheer wings, an antenna headband and black ankle boots, with yellow shadow and soft curls. The beekeeper wears cream coveralls, sturdy shoes, gloves and a wide-brim hat with pale mesh around the edge. I pin the mesh up and back over the brim so it frames the face instead of hanging in front of it. A cardboard honeycomb or flower basket beats bulky gear, and yellow on the beekeeper's socks ties the two together. Both layer easily over warm clothes.
28. Butterfly And Gardener Duo Costume

A butterfly and a gardener bring garden colour to a comfortable pair. The butterfly wears a fitted black top with a colourful skirt or pants, light printed wings, an antenna headband and matching sneakers, with eyeliner that picks up the wing colours. The gardener wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots, gardening gloves and a straw hat, and carries a watering can of artificial flowers. A few felt butterflies on the gardener's hat connect the costumes. I'd pick wings with a flexible frame, since rigid ones bend permanently the first time someone backs into you in a doorway.
29. Shark And Lifeguard Duo Costume

A shark and a lifeguard skip the full-body suit entirely. The shark wears a grey hoodie with a felt fin and soft white teeth around the hood, grey joggers and grey sneakers, with silver eye makeup and slicked hair or a short grey wig. I stuff the fin lightly and stitch a strip of card inside so it stands up rather than flopping over. The lifeguard wears red shorts or pants, a white top with a red cross-style patch, white sneakers, sunglasses and a visor, with a foam rescue float on a shoulder strap. Round every felt tooth, keep the face clear, and add a jacket underneath outdoors.
30. Mermaid And Sailor Duo Costume

A mermaid and a sailor bring nautical style without a restrictive tail. The mermaid wears a scale-print skirt or flared pants, a teal top, pearls, metallic flats and a long turquoise or red wig, with iridescent shadow and a few cosmetic pearls at the temples. I fix those pearls with eyelash glue, which holds through a warm evening and peels off cleanly. The sailor wears white trousers, a navy striped shirt, white sneakers, a neck scarf and a white sailor cap, with neat hair. A shell purse and a cardboard compass are the props. Flared pants let the mermaid walk, sit and dance.
31. Astronaut And Alien Duo Costume

An astronaut and an alien mix space-age details with modern clothes. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, silver sneakers, fabric mission patches and a cardboard helmet with the visor left open. Cardboard helmets crush at the chin, so I line the inner rim with a strip of foam pipe insulation. The alien wears a metallic green or silver bodysuit with a skirt, jacket or loose pants, platform sneakers and an antenna headband, plus green shadow, silver highlighter and a sleek ponytail or bright wig. A plush planet links the two. Keep reflective tape away from the knees and elbows, where it creases and peels.
32. Cowboy And Cowgirl Duo Costume

A cowboy and cowgirl pair may already be hanging in your closets. Both wear jeans, plaid or denim shirts, leather-look belts, cowboy hats and western boots. Give one outfit a brown-and-tan palette and the other red, turquoise or cream accents, so you look like a pair instead of twins. Fringed vests, bandanas and felt badges add detail, with loose waves or braids under the hats and warm, natural makeup. A soft rope coil or plush horse makes a safe prop. Leave the spurs at home; they catch on stairs and other people's ankles.
33. Pirate And Mermaid Duo Costume

A pirate and a mermaid make a fantasy ocean pair. The pirate wears a white blouse, striped pants, a dark vest, a waist sash, a head scarf and flat knee-high boots, with smudged liner, tousled hair and a rolled craft-paper treasure map. The mermaid wears teal flared pants or a scale-print skirt, a purple or sea-green top, pearls, metallic flats and long wavy hair in an ocean colour, with iridescent makeup and shell clips. I tie the pirate's head scarf over a thin elastic band, which stops it slipping back as you move. A treasure-chest bag links the two without anything sharp.
34. Detective And Mystery Clue Duo Costume

A detective and a walking mystery clue are a clever DIY pair. The detective wears a trench coat, plaid trousers, a collared shirt, loafers and a brimmed cap, with neat hair, a notebook and a big plastic magnifying glass. The clue wears one strong colour covered in felt question marks, matching sneakers and a question-mark headband. I'd pick purple, red or bright blue for the clue so it pops against the detective's neutrals, and cut the question marks large; small ones look like random shapes from a distance. Graphic liner and bright lipstick finish the clue, and a sealed envelope makes the shared prop.
35. Magician And Rabbit Duo Costume

A magician and a rabbit give you stage drama that stays family-friendly. The magician wears black trousers, a white shirt, a fitted black jacket, a red bow tie, a top hat and polished flats or dress shoes, with sleek hair, subtle liner, white gloves and a foam wand. The rabbit wears white, white sneakers, a soft ear headband, a fluffy tail and a bow tie matching the magician's, plus a pink nose and fine whiskers. Matching those bow ties is the detail I'd never skip; it's the one thing that says you came together. A collapsible black fabric hoop hints at the hat trick in photos.
36. Ringmaster And Circus Lion Duo Costume

A ringmaster and a circus lion bring vintage show colours to a bold pair. The ringmaster wears black trousers, a white shirt, a red tailcoat or fitted jacket with gold trim, black boots and a small top hat, with red lips or defined brows. The lion wears a tan sweatsuit, brown boots, a soft tail, rounded ears and a faux-fur mane attached to a hood, with golden shadow, a brown nose and whiskers. Sewing the mane to the hood rather than a headband keeps it from sliding back. A cardboard ticket or a ribboned hoop is the shared prop, and gold on both ties it together.
37. Vampire And Bat Duo Costume

A vampire and a bat are a stylish pair without gory makeup. The vampire wears a black suit or long black dress, a burgundy vest or cape, polished boots and neat dark hair, with pale skin, smoky eyes and deep berry lips. Fangs are optional and best kept for photos. The bat wears all black with fabric wings sewn from the wrists to the sides, black sneakers and a soft ear headband, with silver shadow and swept-back hair. I cut those wings to end at the hip so they don't sweep across a snack table. A velvet choker or silver moon jewellery on both connects the looks.
38. Witch And Black Cat Duo Costume

A witch and a black cat can go cute, classic or fashion-led. The witch wears a black midi dress, purple cape, striped tights, a pointed hat and buckled boots, with plum shadow, dark lips, soft curls and a small broom she can tuck under one arm. The cat wears a fitted black jumpsuit or sweater with pants, black sneakers, a soft tail and an ear headband, with a liner nose, whiskers and gold shimmer. Purple on both, through the cat's collar and the witch's cape, links you. I stiffen a floppy hat brim with a ring of craft wire stitched inside the edge so it doesn't droop by midnight.
39. Matching Skeleton Duo Costume

Matching skeletons coordinate while each person keeps their own silhouette. One of you wears a black jumpsuit with white felt bones, the other a black dress, leggings or suit with the same pattern, plus black boots or sneakers and white gloves painted with bone shapes. White and grey face makeup around the eyes, nose and cheekbones stays clean rather than frightening. I trace the bones from one paper template for both outfits, which is what makes them look like a set. Silver crowns or flower headbands personalize the pair, and reflective white tape shows up in dim rooms and peels off afterwards.
40. Mummy And Archaeologist Duo Costume

A mummy and an archaeologist are an adventurous pair you can thrift. The mummy wears cream leggings and a long-sleeve top wrapped loosely with strips of off-white fabric, beige sneakers, tousled hair and soft tan shading. Every strip needs securing so nothing trails near the shoes; I stitch the ends down rather than tucking them. The archaeologist wears khaki pants, a button-up shirt, a utility vest, hiking boots and a wide-brim hat, with dusty bronzer and tied-back hair, and carries a notebook, brush and cardboard map rather than real tools. Both are neutral, so texture separates them: linen, cotton and canvas against soft gauze.
41. Frankenstein Monster And Bride Duo Costume

The monster and his bride bring classic Halloween drama with simple makeup. The monster wears a dark jacket, black shirt, slightly short trousers, heavy-looking platform boots and messy black hair, with pale green skin, strong brows and drawn stitch marks. The bride wears a long white dress, white flats or boots and a tall black wig with white streaks, with pale skin, dark liner and berry lips, plus a white shawl for warmth. Her tall hair is the hard part; I build it over a foam cone pinned into a wig rather than teasing your own hair. Foam neck bolts go on with skin-safe adhesive.
42. Scarecrow And Crow Duo Costume

A scarecrow and a crow pair autumn textures with a simple black companion. The scarecrow wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, patched knees, brown boots and a floppy straw hat, with raffia-coloured felt at the cuffs, an orange nose, rosy cheeks and drawn stitches. The crow wears black trousers or a black dress, sleeves layered with feather-cut black fabric, black boots and a headband with a short soft beak. I cut those fabric feathers from a non-fraying knit so the edges stay clean all night. Dark metallic shadow and a sleek ponytail finish the crow, and a basket of faux sunflowers suits both.
43. Cloud And Rainbow Duo Costume

A cloud and a rainbow give you bright colour and soft texture. The cloud wears a white sweatshirt and pants, white sneakers, silver makeup and a headband with light fiberfill, plus small padded cloud shapes on the shoulders that stay clear of the face. Fiberfill flattens when glued, so I stitch it inside a sheer white fabric pouch that keeps its puff. The rainbow wears a striped dress, jumpsuit or bright separates, multicoloured sneakers and ribbon hair extensions, with colourful liner and rosy cheeks. Fabric raindrops from the cloud's sleeves and a sun bag for the rainbow connect you. Keep every ribbon above the knee.
44. Fire And Ice Duo Costume

Fire and ice is a colour duo with no characters to learn. Fire wears red flared pants, an orange top, a yellow jacket or cape and red boots, with red-and-orange temporary colour or a wavy ombre wig, gold shadow and flame-shaped liner. Ice wears pale blue or silver, white boots and crystal-style accessories, with an icy blue wig or sleek silver ponytail, pearl highlighter and cool blue around the eyes. Foam crowns cut as flames and icicles finish both. I'd give you the same silhouette, both in flares or both in dresses, so the only difference anyone notices is the temperature.
45. Day And Night Duo Costume

Day and Night is a celestial pair that adapts to dresses, suits, jumpsuits or modest separates. Day wears pale blue and gold, white shoes, a sun headpiece and soft golden makeup, with bright waves or a neat updo with tiny cloud clips. Night wears navy or black with silver stars, metallic shoes, a crescent headband and deep blue shadow, with a long dark wig or sleek hair. Short matching capes add movement, and sun and moon bags carry your things. Navy reads as black in a dim room, so I'd add enough silver stars that Night still shows up in photos.
46. 1980s Workout Duo Costume

Matching 1980s workout costumes bring loud retro colour. Both of you wear bright leggings or running shorts, oversized tanks, cropped sweatshirts, leg warmers and supportive white sneakers, in contrasting neon pairs: pink and turquoise for one, orange and purple for the other. Wide headbands, wristbands and waist packs carry the era, with high curly or teased hair, vivid blush and colourful shadow. Foam mats on shoulder straps or cardboard dumbbells are easy props. I always add fitted bike shorts under high-cut pieces; aerobics leotards ride up the moment you sit down.
47. Disco Dance Duo Costume

A disco duo is all reflection and flares, with shoes you can dance in. One of you wears a silver sequin top with white bell-bottoms, the other a gold shirt or jumpsuit with black flares, plus metallic platform-style shoes with stable soles, big sunglasses and simple chains. Fluffy curls, a smooth blowout or a rounded wig, shimmer shadow and gloss finish the look. Mirrored-ball purses or sparkly crossbody bags beat bulky props. Repeat silver and gold on both of you so the costumes coordinate without matching. I check sequin tops for scratchy inside seams, which rub raw under the arms after an hour of dancing.
48. Rock Star Duo Costume

Two rock stars suit friends who want a bold outfit without copying a real musician. One wears black faux-leather pants, a metallic jacket, a graphic top and platform boots; the other wears plaid pants, a fringed vest, a dark shirt and studded ankle boots. Temporary colour streaks, teased volume, smoky liner and face gems finish both. I glue the gems with eyelash adhesive so they stay put through a sweaty night. Cardboard guitars on shoulder straps leave your hands free, and silver cuffs and dramatic sunglasses on both connect the pair. Skip sharp studs and heavy hardware; separate colours give each performer their own identity.
49. Tourist And Tour Guide Duo Costume

A tourist and a tour guide turn ordinary travel clothes into a last-minute joke. The tourist wears a tropical-print shirt, cargo shorts, tall socks, sneakers, sunglasses and a sun hat, with a camera, folded map, waist pack and a stripe of white sunscreen makeup on the nose. The guide wears khaki pants, a polo, walking shoes, a cap and a lanyard with a handmade name badge, and carries a small flag on a cardboard pole and a clipboard with a pretend itinerary. Matching destination stickers on luggage tags link you. I like this one because every prop is something you'll actually use, from the waist pack to the map.
50. Painter And Masterpiece Duo Costume

A painter and a living masterpiece close the list with room for creativity. The painter wears paint-splattered overalls, a striped shirt, canvas sneakers and a soft beret, with messy hair, a cardboard palette and clean brushes. The masterpiece wears a solid-colour dress, suit or jumpsuit covered in fabric flowers, felt shapes or painted swirls, plus an ornate lightweight frame on shoulder straps. Repeat a few of the masterpiece's colours on the painter's overalls to unite the pair. If you're splattering paint, use fabric paint and let it dry fully for a day. I build the frame from foam board, since a real thrifted frame is far too heavy to wear.
Foam Board Panels You Can Still Sit Down In
Several of the food and object pairs here, peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, the painter's frame, depend on a wearable panel. Done badly, panels are the reason people take their costume off by ten o'clock. Done well, you forget you're wearing them.
How I build a sandwich-board panel
- Cut two panels from foam board, sized from your collarbone to just above the knee. Any longer and you can't sit or climb stairs.
- Round every corner with scissors. Square corners jab the person next to you and catch on doorframes.
- Punch two holes at the top of each panel, reinforce them with a square of duct tape on the back, and thread wide ribbon through as shoulder straps.
- Add a short ribbon tie at each side, around waist height, so the panels don't swing open in the wind.
- Paint with acrylic and let it dry overnight. Wet paint on foam board warps it, so use thin coats rather than one heavy one.
Foam board softens and bends in rain, so if your party is outdoors, wrap the panels in clear packing tape or carry them under a coat until you arrive. Glue fabric to the front with fabric glue rather than hot glue, which lets go when the panel flexes. And plan where your phone and keys live, because a panel hides every pocket you have.
Two Outfits, One Idea, and Nobody Left Holding the Joke
A good duo costume has a clear shared idea and two outfits that feel equally worth wearing. Give both people recognizable clothing, hair, makeup, a prop and comfortable shoes, then test the wings, capes, hats and panels before the night so you can both sit, walk and climb stairs. Swap roles, adjust hemlines, add warm layers or trade heels for sneakers as you need to. Above all, pick a pairing that suits both personalities, so neither of you ends up wearing an afterthought.
