A duo costume falls apart when one friend gets the fun character and the other gets the leftover. When I plan a pair, I give each person three things before we buy anything: a character, a main colour, and one accessory nobody else at the party will have. The pairings below cover best-friend characters from films and cartoons, nostalgic favourites, food jokes, fantasy contrasts and a few easy DIY ideas, and most of them suit sisters, roommates, teens or grown women equally well. Skirt length, sleeves, shoes and makeup can all shift for a school event, a house party or a long night of trick-or-treating. Start with the clothes you already own, thrift the gaps, and save your effort for the handmade piece that tells people who you are.

Splitting the Work So Both Halves Look Finished
The most common problem I see with duo costumes is effort that lands on one person. One friend has a wig, a handmade prop and careful makeup; the other has a T-shirt and a headband. In photos the pair reads as a costume and its sidekick. A little planning a week or two out fixes it.
- Agree on a shared detail first: one colour, one fabric or one prop that appears on both of you. It does more to connect a pair than matching outfits.
- Count the pieces. If one costume has a wig, a hat and a prop, the other needs roughly three things too, even if they're simple.
- Give each of you one handmade piece. A felt label, a crown or a painted prop gives the costume personality that shop-bought pieces lack.
- Do a test photo side by side in the outfits before the night. You'll spot at once if one half looks thinner or the colours fight.
I also tell pairs to decide early who carries the phones, keys and money. Several of these looks include a small bag for exactly that reason, and a costume falls apart quickly when someone ends up holding a jacket all night.
1. Glinda And Elphaba Duo Costume

This is the pair I suggest when two friends want maximum contrast, pink sparkle next to black and green. Glinda needs a pink tulle dress, sparkly ballet flats, a rhinestone crown and a star wand; soft curls, shimmer and a glossy lip finish her. Elphaba wears a long black dress with a defined waist, black tights, lace-up boots and a tall pointed hat, with a black cape for movement. Green face makeup is the obvious choice, but emerald eyeshadow alone reads surprisingly well if one of you has sensitive skin. Tall witch hats tip forward all night, so I stitch a thin elastic under the back of the hair before anything else. Give Elphaba a broom and make sure both costumes carry the same amount of detail, or the pink one swallows the photo.
2. Wednesday And Enid Duo Costume

Wednesday and Enid work because the costumes argue with each other. Wednesday is a black collared dress, or a black sweater over a white button-down, with opaque tights, chunky loafers and two tight braids. Keep her face pale with neutral lips and a little smudged liner. Enid is the noise: a colourful striped sweater, a pastel skirt, bright tights, platform sneakers and loose waves with pink and blue temporary colour on the ends. I tell the Enid half to spray that colour well before getting dressed, because the wet stuff rubs onto a pastel collar fast. Bright nails and glittery eyes give her more character than any fake claws. A small black backpack and a fuzzy pastel bag carry phones and keys without breaking either look.
3. Daphne And Velma Duo Costume

You can build Daphne and Velma almost entirely from regular clothing, which is why I steer first-timers toward it. Daphne is a long-sleeved purple dress, lavender tights, purple flats and a bright green neck scarf, plus a smooth red wig or natural red hair held back with a wide lavender headband. Soft purple eyeshadow and pink lipstick are enough. Velma takes an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red loafers, a short brown bob and thick black glasses. The glasses do most of the work, so pick a frame bold enough to read across a room. Hand each of you a magnifying glass or a notebook, and choose stretchy knits and low shoes if the night involves walking or dancing.
4. Cher And Dionne Duo Costume

Plaid carries this one, so I spend the money on matching skirts and blazers and save everywhere else. Cher wears a yellow plaid blazer with a matching skirt, a white top, white knee socks, black Mary Janes, a little faux-fur backpack, straight blonde hair and pink makeup. Dionne takes a black-and-white plaid jacket and skirt with red accents, sheer knee socks, black platforms, long braids, a bold brimmed hat and a mini handbag. The two should look like they shopped together, not like twins. If a fitted blazer feels stiff for a whole evening, a plaid cardigan reads almost the same. Painted cardboard flip phones are a cheap, funny prop and you can slip them in a pocket between photos.
5. Barbie And Weird Barbie Duo Costume

One of you gets to be perfect and the other gets to be a mess, and the mess is honestly more fun to style. Classic Barbie is a bright pink dress, matching heels, a structured bag, blonde waves and glossy pink makeup, with oversized sunglasses or a hair bow if you like. Weird Barbie wears a puff-sleeved pink dress over patterned leggings, mismatched socks and loud sneakers. I tease her blonde wig on a wig head rather than on the person, then add blue and pink streaks, because back-combing a synthetic wig you're wearing just tangles it further. Washable face paint in a few abstract lines keeps her quirky rather than scary. A toy hairbrush suits the polished half, and a cardboard split symbol sits well with the chaotic one.
6. Harley Quinn And Poison Ivy Duo Costume

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are easy to do bright and cheerful without any of the darker comic details. Harley wears a red-and-black varsity jacket over a matching top and a pleated skirt or shorts, with opaque tights, high-tops, red-and-blue eye makeup and blonde pigtails dipped in temporary colour. I'd leave the bat at home and give her a deck of oversized handmade cards. Ivy is a green jumpsuit or fitted green dress over leafy tights, with green ankle boots and a headband and wrist cuffs wrapped in faux vines. Wire-stemmed vines poke through thin fabric, so wrap the cut ends in tape before attaching them. Red waves, emerald liner and a few face gems finish her, and the two palettes still read as a pair.
7. Kim Possible And Shego Duo Costume

Kim Possible and Shego are mostly athletic basics, so they're comfortable from the first hour to the last. Kim wears a fitted black mock-neck top, loose olive cargo pants, a brown utility belt and black combat-style boots, with long side-parted red hair, defined brows and neutral lips. A painted cardboard communicator is her only prop. Shego is a black jumpsuit, or black leggings with a fitted top carrying bright green panels, plus green gloves, black boots, sleek dark hair and vivid green eyeshadow. I cut those panels from stretch fabric rather than felt, because felt won't move with a fitted top and starts to pucker at the seams. Skip the fighting props and practise a couple of confident poses instead.
8. Princess Peach And Daisy Duo Costume

Peach and Daisy suit friends of different ages because both dresses carry the same level of detail. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeved dress with a darker pink overskirt, white gloves, pink ballet flats, a long blonde wig, soft curls and a gold crown set with coloured gems. Daisy's dress is yellow-orange with white trim, worn with short white gloves, orange flats, a warm brown wig flipped at the shoulders and a floral crown with green accents. Crowns slide off long synthetic wigs, so I pin them through the wig cap with two bobby pins crossed in an X. Small matching purses beat big props. On a cold night, slip fitted thermal tops under the dresses and wear nude or coordinating tights.
9. Girl Mario And Luigi Duo Costume

Overalls make this the most flexible pair in the list, since each of you can wear them with a skirt, trousers or shorts. Mario takes blue denim overalls over a red long-sleeved shirt, white gloves, red sneakers and a red cap with a handmade white circle; Luigi follows the same formula in green. Braids or low ponytails sit comfortably under the caps. Keep makeup to soft brows and rosy cheeks. The circles on the caps look sharper cut from white felt than drawn with marker, and I glue them flat while the cap is still on its form so they don't buckle. Cardboard mustaches on sticks give you the joke without hiding your faces all night, and yellow felt buttons plus block-shaped crossbody bags hold phones and candy.
10. Jessie And Bo Peep Duo Costume

Jessie and Bo Peep pair cowgirl energy with storybook softness, and both cover a lot of skin, which helps on a cool night. Jessie is a white button-down with yellow felt panels, blue jeans, a cow-print vest, brown cowboy boots, a red cowgirl hat, a long red braid, freckles and a yellow bow, with a coil of soft costume rope. Bo Peep is a pale blue jumpsuit or knee-length dress with puff sleeves, a pink sash, ankle boots, blonde curls, a pink bow and a shepherd's crook made from foam tubing. Foam tubing bends in a cold car, so I run a thin dowel through the straight section. The felt panels on Jessie's shirt are the detail people spot first, so cut them carefully and stitch the edges if you can.
11. Regina George And Cady Heron Duo Costume

Regina George and Cady Heron can come almost entirely out of two closets. Regina wears a pink cardigan over a white top, a black pleated skirt, pink pumps or ballet flats, smooth blonde waves, glossy lips, a little shimmer and a structured mini bag. Cady's relaxed version is an oversized red sweatshirt with straight-leg jeans and sneakers; for a matching party version, put her in a pink polo and plaid skirt instead. Long brown hair and natural makeup finish her. The pink is what sells the pair, so I hold both pinks against each other in daylight before committing. Handmade school ID cards or notebooks make good props, and keeping hemlines sensible makes this one easy for teens and school spirit days.
12. Romy And Michele Duo Costume

Romy and Michele are all about shiny, colourful party dresses, so fabric matters more than fit here. Romy wears a shiny blue mini or knee-length dress, silver platform sandals, a matching clutch, a high blonde ponytail with curled ends, frosted eyeshadow and glossy lips. Michele takes a bright pink dress with fluffy trim, matching platforms and a sparkly bag, with blonde hair loose and centre-parted or a softly waved wig. Rhinestone jewellery and pale pastel nails tie the two together. If tight silhouettes aren't comfortable, I swap in loose satin slip dresses over fitted tees in the same colours, and nobody can tell from across the room. Handmade reunion badges are the inside joke for photos.
13. Betty And Veronica Duo Costume

Betty and Veronica are the sweet-versus-polished pairing, and you can pull both from everyday clothes. Betty wears a pastel sweater over a white collared shirt, an A-line skirt, white ankle socks, loafers, a neat blonde ponytail, a simple headband and peach blush. Veronica takes a fitted black sweater, a purple or burgundy skirt, sheer tights, polished ankle boots, a sleek dark bob, a pearl headband, defined liner and berry lipstick. I like giving both a handmade milkshake cup and a vintage-style handbag, because the shared props say "same story" without matching the clothes. Repeat one school colour across both outfits. Since everything is lightweight, this is the pair I'd pick for a warm indoor party.
14. Sailor Moon And Sailor Mars Duo Costume

Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars share a uniform, so the difference lives in the collars, skirts and hair. Sailor Moon wears a white sailor-style top with a blue collar, a blue skirt, a red bow, white gloves, red knee-high boots, long blonde pigtails with round bun covers, a gold tiara and sparkly makeup. Mars wears the same white top with a purple collar and purple skirt, a red bow, red pumps or boots, long straight black hair, sharp red liner and her own tiara. The bun covers are where most versions fail; I build each bun around a foam donut so it holds its round shape through the evening. Star-shaped light sticks or transformation compacts replace any weapon props, and shorts under the skirts make moving around easy.
15. Rumi And Zoey K-Pop Duo Costume

Rumi and Zoey suit friends who want their costumes to look like stage outfits. Rumi wears a cropped patch-covered jacket over a fitted top, coordinated shorts, opaque tights and platform sneakers, with a long purple braid, a jewelled ribbon, luminous purple liner and temporary branching designs on the skin. Zoey wears a strappy blue top, loose multicoloured pants with teal ribbon loops at the waist and bright sneakers, plus two braided space buns, short bangs, blue eye makeup, a yellow tassel and face gems. A braid that long needs a hair-extension base or a braided wig, since most natural hair won't reach the length. I'd patch-test any skin transfer the day before. Microphones or light sticks make better props than battle gear.
16. Coraline And Other Mother Duo Costume

Coraline and the Other Mother give you a spooky pair with nothing graphic about it. Coraline wears a yellow hooded raincoat over dark jeans and a striped top, yellow rain boots, a chin-length blue bob wig, freckles and a small blue crossbody bag, carrying a plush black cat or a handmade key. The Other Mother wears a black blouse, a dotted skirt, black tights, pointed ankle boots and a smooth retro updo. Don't cover her eyes; I glue oversized black buttons to the frame of clear fashion glasses instead, so she can still see the stairs. Pale makeup, arched brows and red lipstick do the rest. Kept neat and stylised, it's tame enough for a school event.
17. Alice And Queen Of Hearts Duo Costume

Alice and the Queen of Hearts both come from the same book, so they read as a pair even across a crowded room. Alice wears a light blue puff-sleeved dress, a white apron, striped tights, black Mary Janes, a blonde wig with a black headband, rosy cheeks and a teacup. The Queen wears a red-and-black dress with heart trim, opaque tights, black ankle boots, a small gold crown, red lipstick, a heart drawn on the cheek and an updo. I'd carry an oversized playing card or a red rose rather than anything with an edge. Repeat white details on both outfits to link them. Fitted white shirts under the dresses and matching capes on top handle a cold night without hiding the colours.
18. Red Riding Hood And Big Bad Wolf Duo Costume

This version treats the wolf as cute rather than scary, which keeps it friendly for mixed crowds. Red wears a white blouse, a black or brown skirt, a red hooded cape, patterned tights, lace-up boots, braids or loose waves and rosy makeup, with a small wicker basket that doubles as her bag. The wolf wears gray leggings, a gray faux-fur vest, a long-sleeved black top, gray boots, an ear headband, a soft tail, gray eye makeup and a painted black nose. Faux fur sheds on everything near it, so I give the vest a good shake outdoors and a lint-roller pass before the night starts. A plaid skirt for Red and a matching plaid scarf on the wolf tie the pair together.
19. Black Swan And White Swan Duo Costume

The swans are the most graceful pair here, and the trick is keeping both silhouettes identical so only the colour changes. The white swan wears a fitted white top, a layered tulle skirt, white tights, satin ballet flats, a feathered headpiece, a secure bun and pearly shimmer around the eyes. The black swan mirrors her in a black top, black tulle, dark tights, black flats, a black feather crown, strong winged liner and deep berry lipstick. Feather wrist cuffs give movement without the trouble of wings. Loose feathers shed all night, so I run a line of clear glue along the quill ends where they meet the base. Knee-length tutus are easier to walk and sit in than long ones, and matching crystal earrings finish both.
20. Sun And Moon Duo Costume

Sun and moon is my go-to when a pair wants a fantasy theme without picking specific characters. The sun wears a gold dress or jumpsuit, metallic sneakers, a radiant crown, layered gold jewellery, warm yellow eyeshadow, face gems and loose waves, carrying a round sun purse made from painted lightweight cardboard. The moon wears silver or midnight blue, star-patterned tights, silver ankle boots, a crescent headpiece, soft curls or a sleek ponytail, cool silver eyes and tiny star stickers. Matching sheer capes with a little sparkle link the two. Gold and silver lamé both crease badly in a bag, so I hang the dresses until the last minute. The repeated celestial details are what make two different outfits feel like one idea.
21. Fire And Ice Duo Costume

Fire and ice is pure colour blocking, and it works from basic dresses or separates you may already have. Fire wears a red jumpsuit, or a red top with an orange layered skirt, gold sneakers and a felt flame headband, with red, orange and gold shadow blended out and a high wavy ponytail. Ice wears a pale blue dress or a silver top with blue trousers, white boots, a crystal-style crown, icy blue liner, silver face gems and a smooth braid. Light red and blue capes add drama. Felt flames flop by mid-evening, so I back each one with a layer of stiff interfacing before shaping. Leave real flames, dry ice and anything breakable out of it entirely.
22. Strawberry And Blueberry Duo Costume

Strawberry and blueberry rely on matching shapes, so I'd settle the silhouette first and the colours second. The strawberry wears a red dress or red overalls with black felt seeds, green tights, red sneakers, a leafy green headband, red blush and green liner. The blueberry wears a royal blue dress or overalls with lighter blue circles, blue tights, white sneakers, a green leaf crown, blue eye makeup and a berry-shaped purse. Felt pieces stuck to polyester with craft glue usually peel by the end of the night; a few stitches or fabric glue holds much better. Mini baskets of artificial fruit make easy props. Long sleeves underneath handle the cold, while tees and shorts suit a warm room.
23. Peanut Butter And Jelly Duo Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is funny, cheap and needs no real sewing. Peanut butter wears a tan sweatshirt with a matching skirt or trousers, brown sneakers, a felt jar label, a tan headband and natural makeup, with a wooden spoon. Jelly wears a purple sweatshirt with a matching skirt or jeans, purple sneakers, a grape-coloured felt label, purple hair clips and berry eyeshadow. The best part is a bread-shaped foam panel each of you wears crossbody, so standing side by side makes the sandwich. I cut those panels shorter than you'd think, ending above the hip, because a long panel jams the moment you sit down. Keep the armholes generous for the same reason.
24. Ketchup And Mustard Duo Costume

Ketchup and mustard is my answer for a last-minute party or spirit week, since each of you only needs one colour from head to toe. Ketchup wears a red T-shirt dress or red tracksuit, white sneakers, a pointed red felt bottle-cap hat, red hair ribbons, matching liner and a white label across the front. Mustard copies the outfit in yellow, with a yellow felt cap and her own label. Decorated fabric pouches make condiment-shaped purses, and white gloves give it a cartoon finish. I attach the labels with fabric tape or safety pins rather than permanent glue, so the tracksuits go straight back into normal rotation on November 1st.
25. Salt And Pepper Duo Costume

Salt and pepper is a clean black-and-white pair with plenty of room for personal style. Salt wears a white jumpsuit, white sneakers, silver jewellery, a small white shaker hat with gray circles, a high ponytail or sleek bun and luminous silver makeup. Pepper wears a black jumpsuit, black boots, silver accessories, a black shaker hat with white dots, smoky gray eyes and a dark ribbon. Big felt letters on the front explain the joke from a distance, but on a slippery jumpsuit fabric they only stay put if you stitch the corners. A small silver crossbody bag gives each of you somewhere for keys. Same shapes, opposite colours: that is the entire design.
26. Bee And Beekeeper Duo Costume

The bee and the beekeeper pair a cute animal with a workwear look, which suits friends with very different comfort levels. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped sweater, a black tulle skirt or leggings, striped tights, black ankle boots, sheer wings, an antenna headband, yellow eye makeup and a small flower purse. The beekeeper wears cream overalls over a white long-sleeved shirt, brown work boots and soft gloves. For her veil, I drape lightweight mesh from a wide-brim hat and leave it open at the front, because full mesh over the face cuts visibility more than people expect at night. A honey-coloured scarf, a small flowerpot and a few felt bees on the overalls connect the two, and both layer easily for a cold walk.
27. Cow And Cowgirl Duo Costume

Cow and cowgirl is a comfortable western pair that you can mostly pull from a casual wardrobe. The cow wears a white sweatshirt and leggings with black felt patches, black sneakers, a soft ear headband, a detachable tail, pink blush and a painted nose with small freckles. A tiny bell collar is fine as long as it's small; a big bell gets tiring fast. The cowgirl wears denim overalls or jeans, a plaid shirt, brown boots, a felt western hat, two braids and a cow-print bandana. A soft-cord lasso is for photos only, not for swinging indoors. I always repeat the cow print on the cowgirl's hatband, because that one small echo is what makes them look like a pair.
28. Butterfly And Flower Duo Costume

Butterfly and flower give you a soft garden theme that stays comfortable all evening. The butterfly wears a purple or blue dress, black tights, matching ankle boots, sheer wings, an antenna headband, curled hair, iridescent eye makeup and a few gems on the cheeks. The flower wears a green jumpsuit, or a green top with trousers, green sneakers, a felt petal collar, a floral headpiece, rosy makeup and leaf wrist cuffs. A felt petal collar droops unless each petal is cut double with a little interfacing between the layers. The butterfly carries a tiny flower purse and the flower a small watering can. I match one wing colour to the petals, so the two look planned rather than like two separate spring costumes.
29. Mermaid And Sailor Duo Costume

A mermaid and a sailor bring a seaside theme without any awkward props. The mermaid wears a teal sequin skirt with a flared hem, a lavender fitted top, iridescent flats, long beachy waves with pearl clips, blue-green eyeshadow and a hint of scale pattern done with cosmetic shimmer, carrying a shell-shaped purse. The sailor wears high-waisted navy trousers, a striped top with a sailor collar, white sneakers, a white cap, a red neck scarf, natural makeup and a small rope-handled bag. Sequin skirts scratch the inner arm all night, so I line the waistband area with a soft strip of knit. Leave the giant anchors and restrictive tails at home. Navy in the mermaid look and pearls on the sailor tie them together.
30. Glam Vampire And Bat Duo Costume

This vampire and bat pair stays spooky through colour and fabric, with no blood or wounds. The vampire wears a long burgundy dress, a black velvet cape, patterned tights, heeled ankle boots, dark curls, defined liner, berry lipstick, a jewelled choker and small costume fangs. The bat wears a black jumpsuit or dress, black tights, comfortable boots, fabric wings running from wrist to side seam, a small ear headband, silver eye makeup and a sleek ponytail. Wings that reach past the fingertips brush drinks off every table, so I cut them to end at the wrist. Costume fangs make talking awkward, so test them at home first. Burgundy on the bat's belt and the vampire's cape lining links the two.
31. Witch And Black Cat Duo Costume

Witch and black cat is the classic, and it can be built from black clothes you probably own already. The witch wears a black midi dress, purple tights, buckled ankle boots, a wide-brim pointed hat, loose waves, violet eye makeup and a short velvet cape, carrying a small broom or a star-shaped bag. The cat wears a black jumpsuit or a black top with leggings, ballet flats, a tail, a soft ear headband, eyeliner whiskers, a pink nose, silver eyeshadow and a bell choker. A sewn-on tail drags and collects grit, so I attach it with a safety pin at the waistband and keep it no longer than the knee. Purple on both outfits links them, and keeping the witch playful makes this easy for family events.
32. Matching Sheet Ghost Duo Costume

Sheet ghosts look like the lazy option, yet they're one of the more personal pairs you can do. Each of you wears a white poncho-style ghost layer over a white long-sleeved shirt, leggings and sneakers. Cut wide eye holes in the right place, or wrap the fabric around the face like a hood so nothing blocks your sight. One ghost adds a pink bow, a pearl necklace, rosy makeup and a heart purse; the other wears a blue cap, round glasses, silver makeup and a small camera bag. Fabric markers give each ghost its own face. I mark the eye holes while the sheet is actually on the person, because guessing on a flat sheet almost always puts them too low. Keep the hem above the ankle so neither of you trips.
33. Disco Queens Duo Costume

Two disco queens give you glamour without any specific characters to get right. One wears a silver sequin jumpsuit, white platform boots, hoops, a glittery headband, full curls and silver-blue eyeshadow. The other wears a gold flared jumpsuit, or a metallic top with bell-bottoms, gold platforms, layered jewellery, a high ponytail or soft waves and golden shimmer. Tiny mirrored purses and star sunglasses are the photo props. Platforms are where this one goes wrong, so I'd walk around the house in them for an hour the week before, and pick a wide heel over a narrow one. Matching flares hold the pair together while silver and gold keep each of you distinct.
34. 1980s Workout Duo Costume

An '80s workout pair is cheerful, bright and mostly assembled from athletic clothes. One of you wears a hot pink leotard over purple leggings with white leg warmers, high-tops and a wide fabric headband; the other wears a turquoise leotard over blue leggings with yellow leg warmers and matching sneakers. Cropped sweatshirts over the top add warmth and coverage. High side ponytails with oversized scrunchies, bright blush and colourful eye makeup set the decade. Leotards make bathroom trips a project, so I often suggest a fitted tee and high-waisted shorts in the same colours instead. Sweatbands and water bottles are all the props you need; leave the dumbbells at home.
35. Astronaut And Alien Duo Costume

Astronaut and alien share silver hardware, which makes two different outfits look like the same mission. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit with silver patches, a metallic belt, white high-tops, a clear visor-style headband, silver eye makeup and a low braided ponytail, carrying a moon-shaped crossbody bag rather than a bulky helmet. The alien wears a green or holographic jumpsuit, silver ankle boots, a metallic belt, a soft antenna headband, sleek space buns, green-and-purple eye makeup, face gems and a planet purse. Reflective tape on both costumes adds detail and makes you visible to cars after dark. I put it on the back and the sleeves, since those are the parts drivers actually see when you're walking.
Wigs, Crowns and Tall Hats Through a Long Evening
Half the pairs in this list depend on a wig or a headpiece, and that's usually the first thing to fail. Most of it comes down to how the piece is anchored.
Cheap Synthetic Wigs
Budget wigs shed and tangle out of the bag. I give them a gentle brush with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends, and a light mist of water mixed with a little fabric softener to calm the static. Keep them away from heaters, candles and curling irons, because synthetic fibre frizzes or melts with heat. A wig cap underneath stops your own hair escaping and gives pins something to hold.
Crowns, Tiaras and Ears
Headbands slide backwards on silky wigs. Two bobby pins crossed in an X through the band and into the wig cap hold far better than one. For crowns with no band, a comb sewn or glued to the base grips the hair.
Pointed and Wide-Brim Hats
Tall witch hats and wide brims catch wind and tip forward. A thin elastic stitched inside the brim and worn under the hair at the back keeps them on without a chin strap. If you'll be indoors most of the night, test the hat in a doorway too; the tall ones hit door frames more than you'd guess.
Which Pair Fits the Night You Have Planned
A good duo gives both of you a complete costume and makes the link between you obvious at a glance. If you love films and cartoons, a character pair with clear colours and signature hair is the easiest way to get recognised. Food, animal and celestial pairs are better for quick DIY projects and school dress-up days. Before you decide, think about the weather, how far you'll walk, any event rules and how many hours you'll be wearing it. I always ask friends to wear hats, wings, capes and shoes around the house for an evening first, because that's when the pinching and slipping shows up. Thrifted clothes, felt, temporary hair colour and simple makeup cover most of the looks above, and the rest is just deciding which friend gets to be the chaotic one.
