A scarecrow is one of the few Halloween characters you can build almost entirely from a closet and a scrap bin. Flannel, denim overalls, boots, a straw hat and leftover fabric get you most of the way, and the details make it yours: raffia at the cuffs for stuffing, patches for color, a few drawn stitches on the face. I've gathered looks for women, men, couples, kids, families, groups and even a dog, from five-minute outfits to versions finished well enough for a costume contest. Some are sweet and some lean spooky. None of them needs a sewing machine, though a needle and thread help.

Raffia, Yarn or T-Shirt Fringe for the Straw
Every scarecrow below needs something poking out of the cuffs, and the material you pick decides how itchy the night is. I keep four options in mind.
- Natural raffia looks the most like straw and costs little, but it scratches, sheds bits on floors and car seats, and turns brittle. Use it on adults, and only where it touches fabric rather than skin.
- Paper raffia is softer, comes in colors and sheds less, though it goes limp if it gets wet.
- Yellow yarn is the kind choice for kids, babies, pets and school days. It won't scratch, it washes, and chunky yarn reads as straw from a few feet away.
- Fringe cut from an old yellow or tan T-shirt is the softest of all and costs nothing.
To attach any of them, I sew the strands onto a strip of ribbon or bias tape first, then tack that strip inside the cuff with a few stitches. It comes out in a minute after Halloween, and the shirt goes back in the closet with no glue marks.
1. Classic Scarecrow Costume With Overalls

This is the version I'd make if someone asked for a scarecrow and nothing else. Faded denim overalls go over red-and-black plaid flannel, with mismatched patches on the knees, pockets and elbows held by safety pins or washable fabric tape. Tuck small raffia bundles into the cuffs so the straw shows without touching your skin. A floppy straw hat, brown work boots and a loosely tied rope belt finish the outfit. For the face, draw an orange triangle on the nose and short black stitches out from each corner of the mouth, then carry a small fabric crow or a bundle of wheat.
2. Cute Women’s Scarecrow Costume With Tutu

The tutu swaps overalls for layered orange, yellow and brown tulle over shorts, worn with a fitted plaid shirt or soft chambray top. Keep the raffia tassels at the sleeves and waistband short; long strands catch in tulle and pull holes in it. I'd put the effort into the hat, a straw one trimmed with faux sunflowers, autumn leaves and ribbon, with loose pigtails or braids under it. Rosy blush, freckles, an orange nose and neat stitches make a cheerful face. Striped knee socks, brown ankle boots and a small burlap treat bag keep it practical for trick-or-treating.
3. Easy Scarecrow Costume With Jeans

Short on time? Relaxed or distressed jeans and a tucked-in plaid button-down are enough of a base. Safety-pin a few bright felt patches on, and slip short raffia pieces under the shirt cuffs and into the front pockets. A braided rope belt adds a rustic touch without any sewing. Add a straw hat, brown sneakers or worn boots and a bandana at the neck. I use orange cream makeup on the nose, eyeliner freckles and a stitched smile, then hand over a faux sunflower to carry.
4. Glam Scarecrow Costume With Gold Skirt

A metallic gold midi skirt and a fitted rust plaid blouse bring some sparkle to the pumpkin patch. I attach the gold, brown and burgundy patches with removable fashion tape on this one, because metallic fabric shows every needle hole and you'll probably want the skirt again. A cinched rope belt shapes the waist, and raffia at the cuffs keeps it tied to the classic character. Choose a structured straw hat with bronze ribbon and mini sunflowers. Soft waves, copper shadow, an orange nose and precise stitched lines give polished makeup, finished with opaque brown tights, heeled ankle boots, simple gold earrings and a small basket of artificial leaves.
5. Spooky Scarecrow Costume With Burlap Cape

Real burlap scratches and sheds fibers onto everything, so for this cape I'd use imitation burlap or a loosely woven cotton that sits comfortably at the neck. Layer it over a dark brown shirt and black overalls, add gray, tan and muted orange patches, and secure raffia bundles under the sleeves and pant hems. A slouchy brown hat with uneven stitching looks weathered. Smudge taupe shadow around the eyes and draw dark stitched lines across the cheeks, nothing graphic. Flat lace-up boots, black gloves under raffia wrist cuffs and a light faux crow on one shoulder make it eerie without frightening small kids at a neighborhood party.
6. Sunflower Scarecrow Costume With Denim Dress

A button-front denim dress is my pick for anyone who finds overall straps fiddly. Layer it over a yellow plaid shirt, sew sunflower patches and a little raffia onto the pockets, and tie a wide brown ribbon or rope belt at the waist. The straw hat covered in artificial sunflowers tells people the theme from across a room. Relaxed braids or a low ponytail, golden shadow, peach blush, freckles and a stitched orange nose suit it. Yellow tights add warmth, brown ankle boots keep it practical, and a small watering can or fabric sunflower bouquet is easy to carry.
7. Pumpkin Patch Scarecrow Costume

Two fall characters share one outfit here. Burnt-orange overalls go over a green-and-cream plaid shirt, with leaf-shaped patches on the knees and elbows and raffia tucked into the pockets and cuffs. I cut the leaf patches from felt because it doesn't fray, so there's no edge to turn under. Decorate the straw hat with curling green ribbon, artificial vines and tiny foam pumpkins. Wear two low braids or your natural texture, with an orange nose, soft green shadow, freckles and stitches around the smile, plus brown boots or green canvas sneakers. A pumpkin treat bucket doubles as the prop and the candy bag.
8. Vintage Farm Scarecrow Costume

Sepia tones do the work in this one: high-waisted brown trousers, suspenders and a cream collarless shirt, with muted plaid patches in olive, rust and mustard on the knees and sleeves. Keep the raffia to a little at the cuffs so it doesn't overwhelm such a quiet outfit. A weathered straw hat or a soft brown newsboy cap with one dried-looking flower suits the period. I'd keep the makeup matte, with light freckles, a faded orange nose and fine stitch lines. Thick socks, worn lace-up boots and a lightweight cardboard sign or a twine-tied wheat bundle finish it.
9. Patchwork Scarecrow Costume With Colorful Overalls

Here the patches are the costume, so go big: red, teal, yellow, orange and green squares across plain overalls, worn over a striped long-sleeve shirt. I tuck raffia behind a few patches before stitching them down, so the straw looks like it's escaping through the mends. A floppy hat with matching ribbons pulls the colors together. High pigtails, bubble braids or messy buns suit it, along with bright peach cheeks, big freckles, an orange nose and tidy black stitches. Colorful striped socks, boots or clean sneakers, and a fabric crow puppet or a patchwork tote cut from the same scraps.
10. Black Scarecrow Costume With Plaid Details

An all-black base gives the character a sharper, modern edge. Wear black denim overalls over a fitted black shirt with charcoal-and-orange plaid patches at the knees, pockets and elbows, and swap the usual straw for black or dark brown raffia. A wide-brim black hat with an orange ribbon makes a strong silhouette. Loose waves or a low braid, smoky gray shadow, matte orange cheeks and fine stitches around the nose and mouth suit it. Black on black disappears after dark, so for trick-or-treating I'd sew a strip of reflective tape to the back of the overall legs. Add combat-style boots and a faux crow or a small plaid-trimmed basket.
11. Pink Scarecrow Costume With Gingham Dress

Pink gingham is an unexpected and sweet choice for this character. Choose a knee-length gingham dress over a cream long-sleeve top, and add tan, blush and floral patches with short raffia tassels at the sleeves and hem. Gingham frays fast at a cut edge, so I pink the patch edges or turn them under before stitching. Trim a natural straw hat with pink ribbon, small daisies and one sunflower, and tie loose braids with gingham bows. Rosy blush, pink-and-gold eyes, freckles, an apricot nose and delicate stitches go with cream tights, tan ankle boots and a mini basket of pink flowers or a gingham treat bag.
12. Rainbow Scarecrow Costume

A rainbow scarecrow is for someone who wants bright and happy rather than spooky. Start with denim overalls and a white long-sleeve shirt, then add patches in every color across the legs, bib and sleeves. I use yarn at the cuffs instead of raffia here so the stuffing can match the rainbow. Trim the straw hat with rainbow ribbon and multicolored faux flowers, and braid in temporary colored extensions or use bright elastics. Paint each cheek a different warm color, add freckles, an orange nose and stitched smile lines, and wear rainbow socks with white sneakers and a ribbon-wrapped bucket.
13. Boho Scarecrow Costume With Maxi Skirt

Flowing layers give the character a relaxed, bohemian feel. Pair a patchwork maxi skirt with a peasant blouse in cream, rust or mustard, add a wide braided belt, and tuck small raffia bundles under the cuffs and waistband. Maxi skirts sweep the ground and collect leaves, so I'd hem this one to ankle length before adding anything else. Top it with a floppy straw hat with dried-look flowers, feathers and trailing ribbon. Natural waves or side braids, bronze shadow, sun-warmed cheeks, freckles and subtle stitches around an orange nose suit it, with suede-look ankle boots, wooden beads and a woven basket of wheat and sunflowers.
14. Country Scarecrow Costume With Cowgirl Boots

This country version is built on a plaid shirt, a denim skirt and tall cowgirl-style boots, with opaque shorts or tights underneath so you can move. Add patchwork squares to the skirt and shirt and trimmed raffia under the cuffs and waistband. A straw cowboy hat trimmed with sunflowers takes the place of the floppy one, over braids or a low ponytail tied with a bandana. Draw an orange nose, freckles, rosy cheek circles and short stitches around the mouth, and cinch it with a plain buckled belt. Break tall boots in for a few evenings first, since they rub at the calf on a long walk. A rope loop or sunflower bouquet makes a safe prop.
15. Cottage Scarecrow Costume With Floral Dress

A small floral-print dress over a cream puff-sleeve blouse makes a softer, countryside scarecrow. Add gingham patches to the skirt and elbows. I'd put soft raffia tassels only at the cuffs, never against bare skin, where it scratches within minutes. A straw bonnet or floppy hat trimmed with daisies, sunflowers and muted ribbon goes over two relaxed braids, with peach blush, scattered freckles, an orange nose and thin stitched smile lines. Ribbed tights and brown lace-up boots handle cool weather, and a wicker-style basket of artificial apples, wheat and leaves should stay light enough to carry all evening.
16. Western Scarecrow Costume With Fringe

A tan fringe jacket turns a basic scarecrow toward the Old West. Wear it over a rust plaid shirt and boot-cut jeans patched with denim and burlap-look squares. Keep the raffia at the jacket cuffs and jean pockets, well away from the fringe, or the two textures blur into one. A brown cowboy hat with a rope band and one sunflower, a low ponytail or loose waves, warm brown shadow, terracotta cheeks, an orange nose and graphic stitch lines all fit. Western boots finish it, with a hobby-horse head, a fabric lasso or a wheat bundle to carry.
17. Garden Scarecrow Costume With Flower Crown

This one skips the hat and builds around an oversized flower crown. Sage green overalls go over a cream-and-yellow plaid shirt, with floral patches on the knees and pockets and raffia at the cuffs. I wire artificial sunflowers, daisies and leaves onto a flexible headband with florist tape, putting the heaviest blooms at the sides so the crown doesn't slide forward. Loose waves or a braided updo, green and gold shadow, freckles, rosy cheeks, an orange nose and neat stitches suit it. Brown garden boots are practical for outdoor events, and a small watering can or basket of artificial vegetables finishes the garden theme.
18. Scarecrow Costume With Flannel Skirt

A pleated flannel skirt shows off the plaid in a tidier way. Pair it with a fitted chambray shirt and suspenders, and add small felt patches at the elbows and along the hem. I stitch raffia under the suspender straps so it looks like it's spilling out of the clothes. A compact straw hat tilted to one side, braided pigtails or a half-up style, warm orange shadow, freckles, a painted nose and stitched cheek lines keep it neat. Knee-high cream socks and brown oxfords give it a schoolroom finish, and a burlap-look satchel trimmed with leaves and a sunflower is useful as well as on theme.
19. Scarecrow Costume With Corduroy Overalls

Rust corduroy overalls bring real texture. Layer them over a mustard plaid shirt and add olive, brown and cream patches to the bib and knees. If your patches are corduroy too, cut them with the ridges running the same way as the overalls, or they'll look crooked even when they're straight. Fasten the raffia bundles to the fabric rather than letting them rest on skin. A tan straw hat with a dark green ribbon and a cluster of leaves goes with tousled hair, golden shadow, freckles and a soft stitched smile. Wear thick cream socks with hiking or lace-up boots, clip a fabric crow to one strap and carry a small sack marked with a hand-drawn harvest symbol.
20. Scarecrow Costume With Denim Shorts

For a warm night, loose denim shorts over opaque bike shorts make the base. Add a knotted plaid shirt or a breathable long-sleeve top with patchwork elbows, and put trimmed raffia at the sleeve cuffs and under the shorts hem. Raffia brushing bare thighs itches quickly, which is why I sew it to the inside of the hem instead of tucking it. A straw hat with orange ribbon and sunflowers, high braids or a messy ponytail, bright cheeks, freckles, an orange nose and stitched lines in face-safe makeup cover the rest. Ankle boots with boot socks keep feet covered, and a sunflower bouquet or fabric crow is all you need to carry.
21. Scarecrow Costume With Long Patchwork Coat

A knee-length patchwork coat in plaid, denim, corduroy and burlap-look fabric is the showpiece here. Keep everything under it plain, a brown shirt and black jeans, so the coat stays the focus. Raffia goes around the cuffs, collar and hem, short and evenly secured. If you're making the coat, sew patches onto a thrifted coat rather than drafting one from scratch; the lining and structure are already done for you. A tall, slightly crushed hat, slicked or tucked hair, charcoal around the eyes, muted orange on the nose and long stitched cheek lines suit the drama. Heavy boots balance the volume, and a crooked staff in foam or cardboard keeps every edge soft.
22. Scarecrow Costume With Cape And Hood

A hooded cape makes a warm, slightly mysterious scarecrow. Choose a brown patchwork cape over olive overalls and a black plaid shirt, attach raffia around the hood opening, sleeves and pant cuffs, and add a rope belt and muted patches. Keep the hood pushed back enough to show the makeup: bronze shadow, freckles, an orange nose and stitched smile lines. I braid the hair or pin it in a low bun for this one, because loose hair tangles in raffia at the hood edge. Flat boots, a fabric crow near the shoulder and a lightweight lantern-style prop finish it.
23. Friendly Scarecrow Costume For Kids

With kids, comfort decides everything, because anything itchy gets pulled off before the first house. Use soft denim overalls and a cotton plaid shirt, sew or tape felt patches onto the knees and pockets, and swap raffia for yellow yarn at the cuffs. A soft fabric hat with a bendy brim stays on better than stiff straw. Washable orange on the nose, a few freckles and small stitches on the cheeks are enough. Sneakers under brown boot covers, a plush crow or fabric sunflower, and room for warm layers underneath make it work in changeable October weather.
24. Toddler Scarecrow Costume With Tulle Skirt

Layer a brown, orange and yellow tulle skirt over leggings and a soft cotton bodysuit, then add a small plaid vest with felt patches and yellow yarn tassels. I'd use a headband with a miniature soft hat and a fabric sunflower instead of a big brim, which slides over a toddler's eyes. Makeup is optional; a touch of peach blush or a tiny orange nose is plenty. Brown sneakers or soft boots protect little feet, and a plush crow, soft sunflower or pumpkin treat bag is the only prop needed. Tug every decoration hard before they wear it, since toddlers test everything with their teeth.
25. Baby Scarecrow Costume With Soft Overalls

Soft knit overalls in tan or denim blue over a plaid cotton onesie make the base. Sew flat felt patches where little hands can't reach and pull them loose, and stitch yellow yarn securely around the outer cuffs for a straw look with no scratch. Swap the straw hat for a soft bonnet with a floppy brown brim and a fabric sunflower. Skip makeup; rosy cheeks and the outfit tell the story. On baby costumes I never use buttons or beads as decoration, only stitched felt. Warm socks or soft-soled booties, breathable layers and easy diaper access matter more than any prop, and a plush crow can sit nearby for supervised photos.
26. Boys’ Scarecrow Costume With Work Boots

Relaxed jeans, suspenders and a green plaid shirt give a rugged farm look. Add big felt patches in mustard, red and brown at the knees and elbows, and secure yellow yarn or soft raffia under the cuffs and collar. Knees are where active kids wear patches out first, so I stitch those all the way around instead of just tacking the corners. A floppy straw hat with a plaid band, face-safe orange on the nose, freckles and short stitches around the smile cover the character. Work-style boots or sneakers with fabric boot covers, plus a plush crow on one shoulder or a small harvest basket that holds candy.
27. Girls’ Scarecrow Costume With Braids

Two neat braids tied with bright ribbon are the heart of this one. Denim overalls go over a red, yellow or orange plaid shirt, with heart-shaped and square felt patches on the legs and pockets and soft yarn fringe at the cuffs. A straw hat with ribbon bows, leaves and sunflowers frames the braids. I braid first, then pin the hat through the braids so it stays put while she runs. Pink cheeks, freckles, an orange triangle nose and small stitches from the smile keep the face cheerful. Striped tights add warmth, and ankle boots or sneakers plus a mini wicker-look basket or plush crow round it off.
28. Teen Scarecrow Costume With Baggy Jeans

Teens usually want it to look like clothes, not a costume, and this one does. Baggy distressed jeans and an oversized plaid shirt over a fitted neutral tee form the base, with just a few patches placed with care and raffia tucked into the cuffs, pockets and waistband. Add a slouchy straw hat or a brown bucket hat wrapped in plaid ribbon, and wear hair loose, braided or tucked. An orange nose, freckles, warm shadow and thin stitches across the cheeks are easy to do in front of a bathroom mirror. Platform sneakers or lace-up boots, plus a crossbody burlap-look bag with faux leaves for a phone and keys.
29. School-Friendly Scarecrow Costume

A classroom day needs clothes you can sit, walk and learn in. Choose straight-leg jeans or overalls with a soft plaid shirt and flat felt patches stitched on firmly. I'd use short yellow yarn at the wrists, because loose raffia ends up all over the classroom floor by lunch. A fabric headband with a tiny straw-look hat replaces a big brim indoors. Keep makeup light, just freckles, rosy cheeks, an orange nose and two or three small stitches. Sneakers or closed-toe boots, and a small fabric sunflower or a plush crow on one strap. Leave out bulky props and anything that covers the face.
30. Teacher Scarecrow Costume With Midi Skirt

A teacher's version has to last from the first bell to dismissal and still look professional. Pair a plaid midi skirt with a chambray button-down and a fitted brown cardigan, adding removable patches on the skirt and elbows and short yellow yarn tassels at the cuffs. I baste the patches on with long running stitches so they come off in a minute afterward. A sunflower headband or compact straw hat suits a classroom, with hair in a low bun, ponytail or braid. Keep the orange nose, freckles and stitched lines small. Loafers or flat ankle boots, and a canvas tote trimmed with leaves and plaid ribbon that still carries the day's papers.
31. Men’s Scarecrow Costume With Suspenders

Worn jeans, a roomy plaid shirt and heavy brown suspenders are all a man needs to start. Add mismatched patches to the knees, elbows and shirt pocket, and tuck raffia into the cuffs and waistband. A weathered straw hat and slightly messy hair give the classic shape. Brown shading around the eyes, an orange nose and bold black stitches along the cheeks look theatrical but friendly. If makeup is a hard sell, I'd still push for the stitched mouth, because that's what makes it read as a scarecrow and not a farmer. Lace-up work boots, fingerless brown gloves with raffia at the wrists, and a fabric crow on the shoulder or a bundle of wheat.
32. Men’s Scarecrow Costume With Coveralls

Tan or olive work coveralls are an easy one-piece base. Wear a plaid shirt under them so the collar and sleeves show, then attach big flannel and denim patches across the knees, chest and elbows with short raffia at every opening. Coveralls are heavy cotton twill, so I use a sturdier needle and doubled thread for the patches, or the needle bends halfway through. Cinch the waist with rope and add a floppy straw hat with a dark plaid band. Tousled hair, matte brown eye makeup, freckles, a burnt-orange nose and stitched smile lines suit the workwear. Sturdy boots, and either a rounded foam pitchfork prop or, safer still, a wheat bundle.
33. Plus Size Scarecrow Costume With Belted Dress

A belted denim or chambray dress gives an adjustable, comfortable base. Choose a relaxed cut that layers over a plaid shirt or soft mock collar, and place colorful patches along the skirt, pockets and sleeves. A wide rope or brown stretch belt sits wherever your waist feels best; I prefer stretch because it doesn't dig in when you sit. Raffia tassels go at the cuffs, and a broad straw hat carries the flowers and autumn ribbon. Loose waves, braids or natural hair work with warm shadow, freckles, orange cheeks and a stitched nose. Finish with supportive knee-high or ankle boots and a structured woven-look bag trimmed with sunflowers.
34. Maternity Scarecrow Costume With Overalls

Stretch denim overalls adapt as a bump grows, since the straps and side buttons adjust. Wear them over a breathable plaid maternity top, add soft felt patches to the legs and bib, and keep raffia away from the belly with short tassels only at the sleeves and ankles. A lightweight straw hat with sunflowers draws the eye up. A loose braid or ponytail goes with simple freckles, peach blush, an orange nose and delicate stitches. Supportive flat boots or cushioned sneakers are the safe choice. I'd hand-sew a small pumpkin patch onto the bib over the bump; it's a sweet touch and easy to unpick later.
35. Couple Scarecrow Costume With Matching Plaid

Matching plaid makes a couple look coordinated without dressing identically. One partner wears patched overalls and a plaid shirt, the other a chambray dress or jeans with a plaid top in the same colors. The trick I use is cutting every patch for both outfits from the same two or three fabrics; that repeat ties you together more than matching clothes would. Raffia at both sets of cuffs, matching straw hats with a sunflower each and brown boots finish the pair. Both can wear the orange nose, freckles and stitched smile, and one carries a plush crow while the other holds a basket of wheat.
36. Scarecrow And Crow Couple Costume

The patched scarecrow and the sleek black crow are a natural pair. The scarecrow wears denim overalls, plaid, raffia cuffs, a decorated straw hat, stitched makeup and brown boots. The crow wears black trousers or leggings with a feather-textured cape over a long-sleeve top, a soft beak headband, black eye makeup, gloves and black shoes, with no full mask. For the cape I layer strips of black fabric cut into points, overlapping from the hem upward, which reads as feathers without shedding a single one. The crow can carry a sunflower stolen from the scarecrow's hat, while the scarecrow holds a fabric nest or a wheat bundle.
37. Scarecrow And Pumpkin Couple Costume

A rustic scarecrow beside a bright pumpkin is an easy autumn pair. The scarecrow wears overalls, plaid, patches, raffia cuffs, a straw hat, stitched makeup and boots. The pumpkin wears orange pants or a rounded orange tunic over a green long-sleeve shirt, with leaf details at the collar, a bendy vine headband, orange-and-green makeup and green sneakers or ankle boots. Keep the pumpkin roomy rather than stuffed; heavily padded tunics get hot and make sitting awkward. Give the scarecrow a fabric crow and the pumpkin a light vine basket. Shared orange, green and brown coordinate you without matching.
38. Mother And Child Scarecrow Costume

I'd make the child's outfit first in this pair, since it has the tighter rules. The child gets soft overalls, a cotton plaid top, yarn fringe, a fabric hat and comfortable sneakers. The adult wears denim overalls, a fitted plaid shirt, raffia cuffs, a flowered straw hat and brown boots. Cut the patches for both from the same fabrics, which is the clearest link between the two. The adult can wear full freckles, an orange nose and stitched cheeks while the child's makeup stays minimal, and matching braids or ponytails add another echo. Small sunflower bouquets or treat baskets with identical plaid bows finish the duo.
39. Sibling Scarecrow Costume

Siblings can coordinate and still look like themselves. Give each child denim or corduroy overalls with different plaid shirts and patch colors, soft yellow yarn at the cuffs, flexible hats, simple freckles, orange noses and sturdy shoes. One might wear a sunflower hat while the other gets autumn leaves and a tiny fabric crow, and different hairstyles keep them from looking uniform. Matching rope belts and treat bags pull them back together. I leave a generous hem on the younger child's overalls and just roll the cuffs, so the outfit can be handed down next year.
40. Family Scarecrow Costume

A whole family of scarecrows is easy to customize. Dress everyone in a different mix of overalls, jeans, plaid shirts, denim dresses or tulle skirts, then repeat the same patch fabrics across every outfit. That repeated fabric is what makes a group read as one family from across the street. Use raffia or yarn at the cuffs depending on age, straw hats for adults and soft fabric versions for little ones, and friendly makeup where it suits the age. Boots, sneakers or soft baby booties go underneath. Spread the props around: sunflowers for one person, a crow for another, a basket for a third.
41. Scarecrow And Farm Animal Family Costume

Turn the theme into a farmyard by dressing one or two adults as scarecrows and the kids as animals. The scarecrows wear overalls, plaid, raffia cuffs, straw hats, stitched makeup and boots. Children become a lamb, chick, cow or pig in soft hooded outfits with matching leggings, face-safe cheek details and sneakers. A baby fits in a plush chick romper, and a pet can join in a light bandana or vest. I keep the whole group in cream, brown, yellow and muted red so it looks like one scene, with baskets, sunflowers and artificial wheat as shared props.
42. Pumpkin Patch Family Scarecrow Costume

Older family members go as scarecrows and the youngest as pumpkins. The scarecrows wear plaid, patched denim, straw hats, raffia cuffs, stitched makeup and brown boots. Each pumpkin gets an orange tunic or romper over green sleeves and leggings, a soft leaf headband and comfortable shoes. Artificial vines along a stroller or wagon connect the group; I zip-tie them to the frame and keep them well clear of the wheels and brakes. Small foam pumpkins, sunflower baskets and fabric crows make light props, and orange, green, denim blue and straw yellow hold the palette together for a family of nearly any size.
43. Scarecrow Group Costume With Different Colors

A group of scarecrows stops looking repetitive when each person takes a color, from red through purple, carried through the plaid shirt, patches, hat and props. Everyone picks jeans, overalls, skirts or coveralls for their own comfort. The repeated parts, raffia cuffs, orange noses, freckles, stitched smiles and brown shoes, keep you a scarecrow group rather than a rainbow. I'd hand out one patch fabric per person ahead of time, so nobody turns up clashing with the person beside them. Trim each hat in its own color and give everyone a different light prop, such as a sunflower, a crow, a watering can or a basket.
44. Scarecrow Costume For A Dog

A dog's costume has to let them walk, sit and breathe normally. Start with a comfortable plaid harness or soft vest with flat felt patches, and add a few short yarn strands along the back where the dog can't chew them. Many dogs put up with a sunflower on the collar far better than a hat; if yours accepts headwear, save a soft, adjustable mini hat for short supervised photos. A small fabric crow stitched to the vest is plenty. Skip makeup, shoes, rough raffia and anything dangling or near the muzzle. I'd do a short trial at home and take it off at the first sign of scratching.
45. Scarecrow Costume With Sunflower Makeup

Bold sunflower makeup should sit inside a full costume rather than carry it alone. Wear dark denim overalls with a mustard plaid shirt, sunflower patches, raffia cuffs, a rope belt and brown boots, and a wide-brim straw hat with matching flowers. Paint yellow petals with a brown center around one eye and keep the other eye in warm neutral shadow, then add freckles, an orange nose and stitched cheeks so it still reads as a scarecrow. Patch-test the paint on your wrist the night before, especially for use near the eye. A side braid keeps hair off the painted side, and a sunflower bouquet or watering can finishes it.
46. Scarecrow Costume With Half Face Makeup

Half-face makeup is striking and still playful. Dress in black overalls over an orange plaid shirt with tan patches, raffia cuffs, a rope belt and weathered boots, plus a black or natural straw hat with one big sunflower and muted leaves. One side of the face gets warm everyday makeup; the other gets an orange cheek, exaggerated freckles, half a painted nose and black stitches. I run a strip of paper surgical tape down the center of the face as a guide so the split stays straight. Sweep hair away from the painted side or into a low braid, and carry a hand mirror or a fabric crow.
47. White Scarecrow Costume

Ivory and cream make a fresh, unexpected scarecrow. Wear white denim overalls over a beige plaid or textured cotton shirt, with patches in oatmeal, pale gold and soft brown and cream raffia at the cuffs and pockets. A light straw hat carries white daisies, wheat-colored ribbon and a few leaves, over loose braids or soft waves. Champagne shadow, warm freckles, a pale orange nose and fine brown stitches keep the face soft. White denim shows every smudge, so I'd do the makeup before getting dressed and keep wipes in a pocket. Cream socks, tan lace-up boots and white artificial pumpkins or a basket of pale flowers.
48. Green Scarecrow Costume

Deep green turns the scarecrow toward the woods. Olive overalls go over a green-and-brown plaid shirt with rust, mustard and tan patches and natural raffia at the wrists, ankles and pockets for contrast. A straw hat holds artificial ferns, leaves and one sunflower. Wear hair loose, braided or tucked, with moss-green shadow, freckles, terracotta cheeks, an orange nose and stitches around the mouth, and choose hiking boots for the earthy palette. Don't go green from head to toe; I keep the patches warm-toned, because without them the outfit reads as a forest elf rather than a scarecrow.
49. Funny Upside-Down Scarecrow Costume

This is a visual trick, not a truly inverted costume. Wear loose overalls and a plaid shirt with faux pockets and buttons sewn to the back, then fix lightweight stuffed sleeves pointing upward behind the shoulders while your real arms stay free. A second soft hat sits on a padded form at the upper back. Keep your real straw hat, stitched makeup, raffia cuffs and stable boots so you can see and move. I stuff the fake sleeves with fiberfill, not newspaper, so they stay light and don't crinkle every time you turn. A fabric crow on the false shoulder sells the joke, which is funniest seen from behind.
50. Last-Minute Scarecrow Costume

You can pull this together in under an hour from your own closet. Jeans or overalls with any plaid shirt, fabric scraps or paper patches safety-pinned on, and short strands of yellow yarn or raffia ribbon tucked under the cuffs and pockets. Any straw sun hat, floppy brown hat or neutral bucket hat wrapped with ribbon will do. I draw freckles and stitches with eyeliner and fill the nose with orange eyeshadow, which comes off more easily than face paint. Brown boots are ideal, clean sneakers are fine, and a bandana, an artificial flower or a small basket rounds it off.
Hand-Sewing Patches That Look Mended, Not Stuck On
Patches are what make a scarecrow look homemade in the right way. Safety pins work in a hurry, but stitched patches sit flat and survive an evening of sitting on hay bales.
- Cut patches from felt, flannel or denim. Felt won't fray, while woven fabric looks better with its edges frayed a little on purpose.
- Pin each patch with the garment on a hanger, not flat on a table, so it lies right on the body.
- Sew with embroidery floss in a contrasting color, using big, slightly uneven running stitches or a blanket stitch around the edge. Visible stitches are the point.
- On stretch denim or knits, keep the stitches loose or the fabric puckers when you move.
- For clothes you want back unmarked, baste patches with long stitches that snip out later, or use removable fabric tape.
Skip hot glue on anything worn outdoors. It lets go in cold air, and it leaves a stiff spot in the fabric that never washes out.
Stitched Face Makeup That Lasts Until the Last House
The drawn stitches and orange nose are the smallest part of the costume and the part people look at first. I draw the stitches with a soft black eyeliner pencil, then trace over them with liquid liner, which holds far longer than pencil alone. Cream orange on the nose looks warm, but it transfers onto collars and hat brims, so set it with a dusting of translucent powder.
Patch-test anything new on the inside of the wrist the night before, especially for kids. At the end of the night, an oil-based cleanser or micellar water lifts eyeliner stitches without scrubbing.
The Scarecrow I'd Sew With One Free Weekend
One character can go in a lot of directions. Overalls and plaid are the starting point for nearly every version, and patches, raffia, a hat, a few drawn stitches and good shoes do the rest. Kids and pets do best with soft yarn and flexible accessories, while adults can go glam, vintage, Western, spooky or all one color. Whichever you make, keep the layers comfortable, the face visible and every decoration stitched or pinned down tight. If I had one free weekend, I'd sew the long patchwork coat, because it gets worn again every fall.
