Smurfette comes down to five things: blue skin, long blonde hair, a white dress, the bent white hat and white shoes. Get those right and you have a lot of freedom with everything else. The ideas below run from cartoon-accurate to closet-built, party glam, cold-weather and kid versions. You don't need body paint to pull her off; blue tights and a fitted blue top under the dress do most of the work, and a blonde wig under a stuffed felt hat gives the outline people look for. Each look covers clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes, so you can pick one and shop or sew straight from it. First, though, the hat, because it's the piece that fails most often.

Sewing Her Bent White Hat So It Keeps Its Droop
Her hat is the piece that tells people who you are, and it's also the piece that fails first. A floppy felt cone slides off a slippery wig, and a stiff one sticks straight up like a garden gnome's. This is how I make one that holds its forward bend all night.
- Measure around your head where the hat will sit, halve that number and add a seam allowance. That is the width of the base for each of two rounded cone shapes cut from white felt or fleece, with a tip that curves forward like a thumb.
- Sew around the curve with a straight machine stitch or a tight hand backstitch. Glued seams tend to split as soon as you tug the hat down over a wig.
- Turn it right side out and push a small handful of polyester stuffing into the tip only. Stuffing the whole hat makes it sit high and wobble.
- Fold the stuffed tip forward and tack it to the body of the hat with three or four hand stitches so the bend can't straighten out.
- Sew two small plastic wig combs inside the band, one at the front and one at the back. Combs grip a wig far better than bobby pins, which slide straight through synthetic hair.
Fleece is my choice for cold nights and for kids, since it's soft and forgiving at the seams. Craft felt gives a crisper edge but pills wherever it rubs, so I'd use a wool-blend felt if you plan to wear the hat more than once.
1. Classic Smurfette Costume With White Dress

This is the version I steer most first-timers toward, because a white skater dress over opaque blue tights and a fitted blue long-sleeve top reads correctly before anyone even sees your face. A knee-length skirt with a soft flare gives you the round cartoon shape and still lets you climb stairs. The wig goes on first, long and wavy, then the stuffed white felt hat with its tip bent to one side. For makeup I use cosmetic-grade blue face paint, black liner, mascara and a soft pink lip. Wear white ballet flats or a low block heel, carry a big white or yellow faux flower, and pull on blue gloves if you'd rather not paint your hands. Gloves also protect the dress, since painted fingers mark every white surface they touch.
2. Easy DIY Smurfette Costume

Most of this one is probably already in your drawers: a plain white sundress layered over a royal-blue fitted shirt and blue leggings. The hat is two matching pieces of white felt, sewn or glued around the edge, with a light handful of batting in the top before you fold it back. I sew rather than glue when I have ten spare minutes, because a hot glue seam pops open the moment you tug the hat down over a wig. An inexpensive blonde wig handles the hair, though temporary blonde spray can work on light hair. Paint only the face and neck, cover your hands with blue gloves, and keep the eyes simple with black lashes and a rosy lip. White sneakers and a cardstock flower taped to a wooden dowel finish it.
3. Last-Minute Smurfette Costume Without Face Paint

You can skip the blue face entirely if the clothes do the explaining. Blue leggings, a blue turtleneck and blue gloves under a loose white mini or midi dress set the colour story. Add the long blonde wig and an oversized white hat cut from felt or fleece; in a real pinch, a clean white pillowcase pinned into shape works for a few hours, though it slumps by evening. On the face, use blue eyeliner, a shimmery blue shadow and a small blue heart on one cheek. White sneakers keep you comfortable for school events or a long party, and a bunch of oversized faux daisies adds a cartoon touch. Nothing here stains a collar, which is why I suggest it for anyone wearing the costume to work or class.
4. Glam Smurfette Costume With Sequin Dress

For a party, swap the plain dress for a white sequin skater style worn over blue tights or a smooth blue bodysuit. Keep the fitted waist and flared skirt; that shape is what keeps a sequin dress reading as Smurfette rather than a generic night out. Set a long platinum wig in polished waves and pin a white glitter-felt hat firmly over the crown. Blue cosmetic face colour, shimmery blue lids, defined lashes and a glossy pale-pink lip carry the glam. Sequins scratch the inside of bare arms, so a sleeved blue base under a sleeveless sequin dress is kinder over a long night. Rhinestone earrings and a small white clutch are plenty. White block-heel pumps or glittery ankle boots hold you steadier than narrow heels in a packed room.
5. Cute Smurfette Costume With Tutu Skirt

A fluffy white tutu makes a bouncy Smurfette for dance parties, parades and group photos. Pair a knee-length tulle skirt with a blue fitted top, blue tights and blue gloves, then add a white belt at the waist. The belt matters more than people expect; without it, the eye sees a top and a skirt instead of her dress. Curl a long yellow-blonde wig loosely and set the stuffed white hat over it. Blue face makeup, rounded black liner, fluttery lashes and pink cheeks give the cartoon softness. Pick white ballet flats, Mary Janes or cushioned dance sneakers for the event, and carry a white flower wand with a yellow centre. I'd stay away from very short tutus, which ride up every time you sit down.
6. Plus-Size Smurfette Costume With Fit-And-Flare Dress

A structured white fit-and-flare dress gives a plus-size Smurfette a comfortable, balanced base. Look for some stretch in the fabric, a defined waist and a hem around the knee, then layer it over a breathable blue bodysuit or a blue top with matching tights. A wide white belt adds shape without digging in when you sit. Choose a long blonde wig with soft layers and anchor the curved hat to it with wig clips, which grip far better than bobby pins on synthetic fibre. Apply the blue face makeup in thin, even layers, then black liner, mascara and a pink lip. Cushioned white flats or low platform sneakers keep you comfortable for hours. Carry a light flower prop or a small white bag, and use blue gloves for full coverage without painting arms and hands.
7. Modest Smurfette Costume With Midi Dress

For more coverage, start from a white long-sleeve midi dress with a comfortable waist and a gently flared skirt. Blue opaque tights, a blue mock-neck layer and blue gloves keep her colouring while covering arms and legs. Tuck a long blonde wig neatly under an oversized white fleece hat; fleece holds its bend better than thin felt and is softer on the forehead. Keep the blue makeup light, with defined lashes, pink blush and a rose lip. White ankle boots with a low heel look tidy and suit cooler evenings. A white crossbody bag carries your essentials, and a single oversized daisy or a little basket of silk flowers is enough of a prop. It's the version I'd suggest for family events where you want her playful but covered.
8. Winter Smurfette Costume With White Cape

Cold nights are where most Smurfettes come undone, because a sleeveless white dress and painted arms are miserable in a frosty wind. Build from a blue thermal top, fleece-lined blue leggings and a white sweater dress, then add a short white cape trimmed in faux fur that echoes the dress and holds heat. A thick wig actually helps keep your head warm, and the hat can be made from fleece instead of thin felt. Wind and drizzle break up face paint, so on a raw night I'd switch to blue eye makeup and leave the skin bare. Blue knit gloves replace painted hands and white insulated boots keep your feet dry. A white faux flower dusted with silver glitter gives a frosty accent, and you stay comfortable enough to finish the whole trick-or-treat route.
9. Summer Smurfette Costume With White Sundress

Warm climates and hot party rooms call for a breathable white cotton sundress with a flared hem. Blue bike shorts underneath handle coverage, and blue arm sleeves replace a heavy long-sleeve bodysuit. Sheer blue tights or knee-high blue socks suggest the blue skin without trapping heat. Pick a wig with an open, wefted cap, which vents far better than a solid full cap, and sew the hat from thin white cotton. Use blue makeup only on the face and any visible shoulders, and wear waterproof mascara, because sweat will move everything else. White canvas sneakers or flat sandals keep you light on your feet. A small white flower purse doubles as your bag and your prop.
10. Smurfette Costume With Blue Bodysuit

A full blue bodysuit gives smooth, even colour and saves you from painting your body. Choose an opaque suit that leaves the face open, then layer a sleeveless white skater dress over it. Gloves can be built in or added separately; separate ones are easier when you need to use your phone. Wear a long golden-blonde wig and pin the oversized hat through the wig cap, under the hair, where the pins disappear. Match your face to the suit with cosmetic-grade blue makeup and blend carefully at the hairline and jaw, where a visible line between paint and fabric gives the game away. Black liner, long lashes and pink lipstick add definition. White ballet flats and a light oversized flower suit it well. Before the night, test sitting, walking and a bathroom trip in it, because a one-piece suit under a dress makes that last one slow.
11. Smurfette Costume With Blue Tights And Gloves

Blue tights and gloves are the practical way around painting big areas of skin. Wear them with a blue fitted crewneck and a white A-line dress for a base that goes straight in the wash afterward. Hold the tights and gloves side by side in daylight before you buy; two royal blues from different makers can be very different shades, and the mismatch shows in photos. Add a long blonde wig with curled ends and a padded white felt hat. Paint only the face and neck, then define the eyes with black liner and mascara. White Mary Jane flats keep it cute and comfortable. Carry a white flower with a yellow centre or a small woven basket of faux daisies. This is my pick when you have to change back into normal clothes quickly.
12. Smurfette Costume With White Sneakers

If you'll be walking or standing for hours, build the outfit around clean white sneakers. Pair them with blue leggings, a blue long-sleeve shirt and a short white fit-and-flare dress. White ankle socks bridge the shoe and the blue leg and give it a sporty edge. Wear a golden-blonde wig in loose waves under a stuffed white hat. Use blue face paint, dark lashes and a pink lip, or switch to bold blue eye makeup when full coverage isn't practical. A small white backpack with a removable yellow flower carries your things and leaves your hands free. It still reads as her from a distance, and your feet will thank you at a theme park, a campus event or on a long neighbourhood loop.
13. Smurfette Costume With White Ankle Boots

White ankle boots push the classic costume slightly toward fashion. Look for a round toe and a low block heel, and wear them with opaque blue tights and a crisp white skater dress. A fitted blue mock-neck under the dress keeps the colour unbroken through the arms and neckline. Style a long honey-blonde wig with brushed-out curls and top it with the bent white hat. Set the blue face paint with translucent powder so it stays smooth, then add winged black liner and a pale-pink lip. White flower earrings and a daisy-shaped bag or a light flower prop finish things. Brushing out synthetic curls with an ordinary brush turns them to frizz, so I use a wide-tooth comb or just my fingers.
14. Retro Smurfette Costume With Go-Go Boots

For a 1960s spin, use a white sleeveless shift dress with knee-high white go-go boots. Opaque blue tights and a fitted blue top under the shift keep the cartoon colouring. Flip the ends of the blonde wig or tease the crown softly, then angle the oversized hat backward so the teased height still shows. Blue face makeup with graphic black liner, thick lashes and a bubblegum-pink lip pushes the retro mood. Round white earrings and a daisy handbag nod to the decade. Keep the boot heel low and stable. A shift dress has no waist, so it loses the flared Smurfette shape; the hat and boots have to do more of the work here, which is why I wouldn't skimp on either.
15. 1980s Smurfette Costume With Leg Warmers

An off-the-shoulder white sweatshirt dress, blue leggings and slouchy white leg warmers turn her into an upbeat 1980s version. Wear a blue tank or fitted shirt underneath so the bare shoulder reads blue, not skin-coloured. White high-tops support dancing and walking. Give the wig extra volume and side-swept bangs before adding the curved hat, and pin the hat a little further back so the bangs show. Bright blue face makeup, heavy mascara and glossy pink lips match the era. White plastic bangles and a cardboard cassette player painted blue and white add some humour. Sweatshirt fleece is warm, which makes this a good choice for a chilly party and a sweaty one on a crowded dance floor.
16. Disco Smurfette Costume With White Jumpsuit

A white flared jumpsuit turns her into a dance-floor costume while keeping the colours. Layer it over a blue long-sleeve bodysuit, or use blue arm sleeves and gloves if the jumpsuit has a halter neck. White platform shoes with a solid sole work well. Hem the legs so they just brush the floor, because flares that drag get stepped on all night. Style a long blonde wig in full, bouncy waves and pin a glittery stuffed hat firmly on top. Blue face makeup, silver-blue shadow, black lashes and a glossy pink lip give the disco shine. Silver star earrings and a small reflective clutch beat a bulky prop when you're dancing.
17. Princess Smurfette Costume With Full Skirt

This storybook version uses a white princess dress with a fitted bodice, puff sleeves and a full calf-length skirt. Wear a blue long-sleeve layer, blue tights and blue gloves underneath so the colouring stays clear. Polished curls on a golden-blonde wig soften it, and the white hat takes the place of a crown. Smooth blue face makeup, black lashes, pink blush and a rosy lip keep the face cartoon-bright. Choose white ballet flats over delicate costume slippers; the skirt hides them anyway, and thin slippers wear through on pavement. Carry a flower-topped wand and add a narrow white ribbon belt to mark the waist. Puff sleeves sit best over a thin, close-fitting blue top, so skip a chunky knit underneath.
18. Fairy Smurfette Costume With White Wings

Light white wings add a fantasy touch. Start with a white knee-length chiffon dress over a blue unitard or a fitted shirt and leggings. Rounded, petal-shaped wings suit her better than pointed or dark ones, and the elastic straps should be padded where they cross your shoulders, since thin elastic cuts in after an hour. Curl a long blonde wig softly and set the stuffed hat slightly behind the hairline so it clears the wing tops. Blue face colour, shimmery pale-blue lids, mascara and pink gloss finish the face. White ballet flats with removable flower clips and a small flower wand with a yellow centre round it out. Wings take up space, so this one works best for daytime events and fantasy-themed groups, not a crowded room.
19. Ballerina Smurfette Costume With White Tutu

For a dance-inspired Smurfette, pair a fitted white leotard with a layered white midi tutu, blue tights and blue arm sleeves. A blue unitard under everything gives fuller coverage and keeps the colour even. Tie the ballet-flat ribbons firmly at the ankle, and stitch the ends down if you'll be walking far, because satin ribbon loosens with every step. Put the blonde wig in a low curled ponytail or loose waves, which leaves room for the hat. Blue face makeup with fine black liner, long lashes and a touch of pink lip keeps it delicate. A small flower bouquet is far easier to carry than any ballet prop.
20. Cowgirl Smurfette Costume With White Boots

This Western take starts with a white denim dress, or a white shirt tucked into a flared white skirt. A blue fitted top, blue tights and blue gloves underneath keep her colouring. White cowboy boots and a narrow white belt with a plain silver buckle bring the theme. Braid the long blonde wig into two loose plaits, and keep the curved white hat as the headpiece rather than adding a cowboy hat; two hats muddle the character. Blue face makeup, black mascara and rosy-pink lips stay friendly. Carry a small white hobby horse or a light bundle of faux daisies tied with blue ribbon. New cowboy boots pinch, so break them in for a few evenings before the party.
21. Sporty Smurfette Costume With Tennis Skirt

Here a white pleated tennis skirt, a white zip-front vest, a blue fitted shirt and blue leggings make an athletic version. Add blue gloves or wrist-length sleeves so the hands match. Clean white court sneakers give support, and white crew socks add a sporty detail. Pull the blonde wig into a low ponytail and sit the soft hat over the crown so the ponytail still shows behind it. Blue face makeup, waterproof mascara, black liner and a tinted pink balm hold up to movement. Carry a cardboard racket with a yellow flower on it, or a small white gym bag if you'd rather have somewhere to stash things. It suits casual gatherings, spirit days and any party with games.
22. Cheerleader Smurfette Costume With Pom-Poms

A white cheer dress with blue trim makes a lively base and keeps the colours obvious. Layer it over a blue long-sleeve unitard and blue tights, and add white athletic sneakers with short white socks. A high ponytail on the wig gives bounce, but set it slightly lower than a real cheer pony so the hat has somewhere to sit. Blue face colour, black liner, mascara and a bright pink lip suit the energy. Make the pom-poms from tissue paper or light plastic strips and keep them small for crowded rooms. A removable flower patch on the front of the dress adds a character detail. Teens and adults both wear this one well.
23. Punk Smurfette Costume With White Moto Jacket

A cropped white faux-leather moto jacket over a simple white skater dress gives her an edge without turning scary. Add blue tights, a fitted blue top and fingerless blue gloves, though fingerless gloves mean painting your fingers or accepting pale tips. White lace-up combat boots with a low platform stay comfortable for hours. Style the blonde wig in textured waves or a few crimped sections, then tilt the white hat. Blue face makeup, sharp black liner, mascara and a cool pink lip keep the face expressive. Clip-on silver ear cuffs and a few removable white pins on the jacket supply the punk detail, and a flower-shaped crossbody bag keeps it on the cheerful side.
24. Preppy Smurfette Costume With Pleated Skirt

A crisp white button-front blouse and a knee-length white pleated skirt make a tidy preppy version. Wear the blouse over a blue mock-neck shirt and add blue tights and gloves. A white sweater vest adds a polished layer. Smooth the blonde wig into side-parted waves, then place the hat toward the back of the head. Keep the makeup clean: an even blue base, black lashes, a little pink on the cheeks and a rose lip. White loafers and short white socks tie it together, and a structured white satchel with a removable daisy charm is the only accessory you need. A collared blouse brushes the jaw, so set the face paint well or the collar turns blue by lunchtime. It's a sensible choice for office parties and school-friendly days.
25. Cottagecore Smurfette Costume With Apron Dress

For a countryside feel, layer a white pinafore dress over a blue long-sleeve blouse with opaque blue tights. Look for wide straps, a fitted waist and a midi skirt that moves easily. Braid the wig loosely and let a few curled pieces fall around the painted face, keeping the stuffed hat visible behind the braids. Black mascara, soft liner, rosy lips and a small flower drawn near one eye keep the face gentle. White lace-up flats or plain ankle boots are practical, and a woven basket of white and yellow silk flowers suits the mood. A pinafore is forgiving to sew if you're making your own; a gathered skirt, a bib and two straps get you most of the way.
26. Flower Smurfette Costume With Daisy Accessories

This one makes her flower the theme. Wear a classic white skater dress with removable daisies along the neckline and hem, layered over a blue bodysuit or a blue top with matching tights and gloves. Safety pins or a few hand stitches hold the daisies better than glue, and you get your dress back afterward. Curl the blonde wig loosely and clip two small white flowers near the sides, leaving the big curved hat as the main headpiece. Blue face makeup, defined lashes, pink lips and a tiny painted daisy on one cheek finish the face. White flats with flower shoe clips carry the idea down to your feet, and one oversized daisy or a flower-shaped bag is your prop. Too many flowers start to hide the white dress, so I stop well before the hem is crowded.
27. Sparkly Smurfette Costume With Glitter Hat

A glitter hat changes the whole costume without touching its structure. Wear a white fit-and-flare dress with a faint shimmer over an opaque blue bodysuit, or blue leggings and a top. Make the curved hat from white glitter felt, and keep the glittered edge well away from your face, because loose glitter ends up in your eyes and on everyone you hug. Add a long blonde wig with smooth curls and secure it all with hidden clips. Satin-finish blue face makeup, silver shadow, black lashes and a pink gloss suit the shine. White rhinestone flats or low block heels and a small glittery flower clutch round it out. Under party lights, the hat catches every flash and still reads as her from across the room.
28. Pastel Smurfette Costume With Pale Blue Makeup

A softer palette is a gentle alternative to royal blue. Wear a white chiffon or tulle dress over pale-blue tights, a fitted pale-blue shirt and matching gloves. Pick a creamy blonde wig instead of bright yellow, and pair it with a matte white fleece hat. Pastel blue cosmetic makeup on the face, lavender-blue shadow, brown or black mascara and muted pink lips keep everything soft. White ballet flats or low Mary Janes match the mood, and a bouquet of white, pale-yellow and light-blue silk flowers tied with ribbon works as the prop. Pale blue can wash out to grey in dim rooms, so I'd save this for daytime events and outdoor photos, where the white dress, blonde hair, hat and blue limbs still tell people who you are.
29. Makeup-Free Smurfette Costume With Blue Mask

Skip face colour entirely with clothing and a comfortable eye mask. Wear a blue hooded bodysuit, or a blue long-sleeve top with leggings and gloves, under a white A-line dress. Choose a light blue eye mask that leaves the nose and mouth open so you can talk, eat and drink. Add a long blonde wig and the padded white hat; if your bodysuit has a hood, wear the wig over it and the hat on top. Regular mascara and pink lipstick are enough for the skin that shows. White sneakers or cushioned flats and an oversized white flower finish it. I recommend this one for sensitive skin, quick changes and any party where paint might end up on furniture or other guests. Masks narrow your side vision, so lift it off on stairs.
30. Toddler Smurfette Costume With Soft Tutu

Comfort comes first with a toddler, because anything itchy or tight gets pulled off within minutes. Start with a soft blue cotton shirt, stretchy blue leggings and a knee-length white tulle skirt lined with smooth fabric so the tulle never touches skin. A white vest or simple dress layer makes it look finished without tight pieces. Skip the wig and stitch soft yellow yarn hair around the inside edge of a padded white fleece hat, which gives you hair and hat in one piece that stays put. Leave out face paint, or add a tiny dab of blue cosmetic colour on the cheeks. White slip-on sneakers suit busy feet, blue mittens give matching hands on cold nights, and a plush flower is safer than any rigid prop.
31. Kids Smurfette Costume With Blue Pajamas

Blue pajamas make a soft, affordable base for kids. Choose a plain long-sleeve set without prints, then layer a sleeveless white cotton dress over it. Add blue socks or tights and white sneakers with secure fastenings. Use a child-size blonde wig only if it fits comfortably; otherwise make yarn hair and sew it around a soft white hat. Keep the makeup to blue eyeshadow or a small cheek design rather than full face paint. A plush daisy or a flower-shaped bag is a safe accessory and gives them somewhere to keep small treats. Pajamas are warm enough for most fall evenings, wash easily afterward and stay comfortable through a long classroom party.
32. Maternity Smurfette Costume With Swing Dress

A loose white swing dress gives room and comfort for a maternity Smurfette. Layer it over a stretchy blue maternity top and blue leggings, and avoid stiff waistbands and tight bodysuits. Supportive white sneakers or cushioned slip-ons are kinder than heels. Wear a light blonde wig with the white hat, and check that neither feels hot or heavy after half an hour, since pregnancy often makes you run warm. Blue face makeup can cover the face and neck, with blue gloves for the hands. Black mascara and a tinted pink balm are enough. A small flower crossbody bag leaves both hands free. A swing dress falls from the shoulders, so the silhouette stays right at any stage and you can add or drop layers for the weather.
33. Work-Friendly Smurfette Costume With White Shirt Dress

A knee-length white shirt dress makes a polished Smurfette for most workplace celebrations. Wear it over a blue mock-neck top with opaque blue tights so neck, sleeves and legs all match. A narrow white belt and clean white loafers or supportive flats keep it office-tidy. Choose a neat blonde wig with soft waves and a smaller white hat that won't catch on cubicle walls or doorframes. I'd skip full face paint at work, where it smears onto headsets and keyboards; blue shadow, blue liner, mascara and a small blue design on each cheek say enough. A single faux daisy or a removable flower brooch is the only extra you need, and you can still get through a normal working day in it.
34. Thrifted Smurfette Costume With Vintage Dress

A secondhand white dress gives the costume personality and keeps the budget low. Look for a vintage skater dress, a simple bridesmaid dress or a white uniform-style dress with a defined waist and a comfortable hem. Layer it over thrifted blue leggings and a blue long-sleeve shirt, and add blue gloves. White flats or low heels that clean up well can be reused for years. A pre-owned wig can be refreshed with a gentle wash in cool water and a wide-tooth comb, then styled in loose waves; the hat is easy to make from inexpensive felt and stuffing. Blue face makeup, black liner and pink lipstick finish the face, and a flower sewn from leftover fabric is the prop. Check thrifted white fabric in daylight, since old whites often turn ivory and look yellow next to a brand-new white hat.
35. Deluxe Smurfette Costume With Oversized Flower

For a costume contest, combine a structured white dress with a full blue bodysuit, blue gloves and face makeup matched carefully to the suit. A scalloped hem or a lightly padded skirt exaggerates the animated shape. Style a good golden-blonde wig into smooth, even curls and pin a well-shaped white hat over it; a layer of stiff fusible interfacing inside the felt keeps the bend crisp. Bold lashes, precise liner, softly contoured blue makeup and glossy pink lips hold up to close photos. White platform heels or sculpted costume shoes should still be steady enough to walk in. Build the oversized daisy from foam sheets, fabric and a light tube so you can carry it for hours. Judges look closely, so match every blue on your body before you worry about extras.
Blue Paint That Stays Off a White Neckline
The hard part of this costume isn't the blue, it's where the blue ends up. Any paint that touches a white collar shows, and it shows in every photo. A few habits keep it where you put it.
Water-activated paint, set and tested
Water-activated cake face paint dries to a thin layer and transfers less than greasy cream paint, which stays soft and smears. If you only have cream, press translucent setting powder over it with a puff and wait a few minutes before you dress. Whichever you use, dab a little on the inside of your wrist the day before; any itching or redness means it stays off your face. Never put craft acrylic on skin.
Dress first, paint last
Put on the blue base layer and the white dress before you paint, then tuck a clean tissue or an old scarf around the neckline while you work. Stop the paint a finger-width above the collar of your blue top, so fabric meets fabric rather than paint. Blue gloves solve the hands completely. To take it off, use a gentle oil cleanser or plain soap and warm water and go slowly around the hairline. Blue tends to linger in eyebrows and beside the nose until the second wash, so don't scrub hard on the first pass.
A Long Blonde Wig That Won't Fight the Hat
Her hair is long, so most Smurfette wigs are waist or hip length, and long synthetic fibre tangles fast against a felt hat and a dress. These are the things that make it easier to live with.
- Don't pay extra for a lace front or a realistic part. Her hat covers the crown and hairline, so a basic cap is fine.
- Buy a heat-resistant fibre if you want to curl it, and keep the iron on a low setting. Ordinary costume fibre frizzes or melts under heat.
- Mist it with water and a little fabric softener, then comb from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb before you wear it and again afterward.
- Bring the back hair over one shoulder or into a loose braid if you'll be sitting a lot. Hair trapped behind your back knots up by the end of the night.
If your own hair is already long and light, temporary blonde spray is cooler and lighter than a wig. It rubs off on collars and car headrests, though, so treat it like the face paint and set it before the white dress goes on.
The Hat Does Most of the Work
Every Smurfette above uses the same formula: a white dress, a blue base, blonde hair, the curved hat and white shoes. After that you can add tutus, boots, flowers, capes, sporty separates or sparkle to suit the event and your own taste. Blue clothing and gloves are a real alternative to body paint, and they spare your white dress. Go for breathable layers, pin the hat well, wear shoes you can stand in and keep props light. A quick thrifted version and a full contest build both work, as long as the blues match and the hat holds its bend.
