The first weeks of fall are the hardest to dress for. You leave at a sweater temperature and come home sweating in it. My approach with clients is never to switch wardrobes overnight. Instead, I keep the lighter summer pieces and add one fall element to each outfit: a jacket, a fine knit, a closed shoe or a darker color. Light outerwear, relaxed denim and separates you can peel off are what this stretch of the year runs on. Below you'll find dresses with jackets, tanks under cardigans and jeans with smarter shoes, all built so one layer can come off by lunch.

Summer Pieces Worth Leaving in the Closet a While Longer
When I help a client switch seasons, we don't pack summer away in one go. Plenty of warm-weather pieces carry on through September and into October once you pair them with a fall layer. These are the ones I'd keep out.
- Midi and maxi dresses in solid or darker prints. Add a denim jacket, cardigan or vest and closed shoes.
- Slip skirts and slip dresses. A fitted tee or fine knit over them makes them daytime-appropriate.
- White and ecru jeans. Pair them with suede, camel and brown leather rather than bright summer colors.
- Tanks and short-sleeve tees as base layers under blazers and cardigans.
- Linen shirts and trousers, at least until the first properly cold week. Darker linen in olive or brown looks more seasonal than white.
What I'd put away first are sandals and very bright, saturated colors. Swapping the shoes is the single change that makes a summer outfit read as fall, more than any other piece.
1. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Blazer And Jeans

I reach for a blazer before a sweater in September because it's easy to take off and carry. Put a relaxed one in camel, chocolate, navy or a quiet plaid over a fitted white or cream tee and straight jeans. Unlined or half-lined blazers are much cooler on warm afternoons than fully lined ones. Medium-wash denim keeps it daytime; dark denim sharpens it. Loafers, ballet flats or low ankle boots work better than tall boots this early. A half-tuck of the tee or a belt keeps your waist visible once the jacket's off.
2. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Trench Coat And Trousers

A trench is the most useful early-fall coat I know, because it blocks wind without trapping heat. A light beige or olive one over a fitted tank or a crisp shirt, with black, navy or taupe wide-leg trousers, makes a long, clean line. Sleek sneakers keep it relaxed and loafers make it office-appropriate. On warm days, wear it open with the sleeves pushed up. Length matters for proportion: petite women usually look best in a trench that ends above the knee, while taller women can carry a longer one.
3. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Cardigan And Midi Skirt

A fine-knit cardigan with a midi skirt is warm enough for the morning and light enough for the afternoon. Burgundy, navy, oatmeal or forest green knits work, buttoned as a top or open over a fitted tank. Satin, pleated or light cotton skirts all suit it. Match volume carefully: a fitted cardigan with a full skirt, a relaxed cardigan with a straight one. Ballet flats keep it soft and loafers give more support for walking. Add a slim belt if the cardigan hides your waist.
4. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Denim Jacket And Dress

Don't put your summer dresses away yet. A denim jacket gives them coverage for cool mornings and works over floral midis, ribbed knit dresses and cotton shirtdresses. Medium wash looks casual, dark wash a touch sharper. Suede ankle boots shift the outfit toward fall, while white sneakers keep it closer to summer. If the dress is loose, a narrow belt adds shape. Roll the jacket sleeves when it gets warm, and the outfit stays comfortable through the afternoon.
5. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Leather Jacket And Slip Skirt

A leather jacket over a silky slip skirt is a contrast I use a lot early in the season. The leather toughens up the soft fabric. Start with a fitted white, black, gray or cream tee or light knit. Bias-cut skirts in olive, burgundy or chocolate move well and cling less than straight-cut satin. A cropped jacket defines the waist; an oversized one is more relaxed. Leather jackets get warm in direct sun, so I'd carry it on hot afternoons. Loafers, low boots or sneakers depend on the plan.
6. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Button-Down Shirt And Jeans

Proportions are what make a shirt and jeans look current. A slightly oversized striped, white, denim or pale blue shirt, loosely tucked into straight or relaxed jeans, with the top buttons open over a fitted tank. High-rise jeans give the tuck somewhere to sit; with low-rise, a loose tuck just looks untidy. Loafers, ballet flats or minimal sneakers handle walking. Roll the sleeves in the heat and drape a light sweater over your shoulders for the evening. A slim belt and small earrings finish it.
7. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Knit Vest And Trousers

A knit vest gives a little warmth without heavy sleeves, which suits these in-between weeks. Wear a fitted or slightly relaxed vest over a white button-down, a short-sleeve tee or a light long-sleeve top, with tailored wide-leg trousers in black, brown, charcoal or cream. A fine-gauge V-neck adds the least bulk at the torso; a chunky crewneck vest adds plenty. A tonal palette looks sleek, while stripes or autumn shades add contrast. Loafers are the natural shoe and clean sneakers make it casual.
8. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Utility Jacket And Black Jeans

An olive utility jacket is lightweight, it brings in fall color, and its pockets mean you can skip the bag. Layer it over a white tee, striped knit or tank with black straight-leg jeans for contrast. Tan ankle boots, suede loafers or neutral sneakers all suit it. If the jacket has a drawstring waist, pull it in slightly for shape; if it's boxy, leave it open to create a long vertical line. Gold jewelry warms olive and silver suits cooler greens.
9. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Sweater And Satin Skirt

With a satin midi skirt, sweater weight decides whether the outfit works. A fine knit lies flat over the waistband; a thick one bunches and makes the skirt look like an afterthought. Cream, gray, navy, plum and chocolate knits all work against satin. Tuck lightly or choose a cropped knit that meets the skirt top. Satin shows creases and water marks, so it's a dry-day outfit. Ballet flats, slingbacks or low ankle boots work, and a structured bag adds some firmness to the fluid shapes.
10. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Striped Sweater And Jeans

In early fall I'd choose a striped sweater in cotton or fine merino rather than wool-acrylic, which runs warm and can feel sticky on a sunny afternoon. Pair it with straight, barrel or relaxed denim in medium or dark wash. Black and cream stripes are classic; navy, burgundy, green or red add color. Wear it on the cool morning and drape it over your shoulders when the day warms up. Loafers, ballet flats or retro sneakers, a simple belt and a roomy tote finish it.
11. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Suede Jacket And White Jeans

White jeans don't need to disappear after summer. Warm textures make them work for fall. Pair straight or wide-leg white denim with a neutral tee, light knit or striped shirt, then add a suede jacket in camel, tobacco, chocolate or olive. Cream or ecru denim looks less summery than bright white if that bothers you. Suede marks and darkens in rain, so I'd keep this for dry forecasts, or choose a washable faux suede in a rainy climate. Brown loafers or ankle boots and a matching belt finish it.
12. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Blazer And Midi Dress

A blazer over a midi dress is one of the fastest ways to look ready for a meeting. A ribbed column dress, a printed wrap or a belted shirtdress all work underneath. The detail I check first is where the blazer hem lands. If it ends at the widest part of the hips, it adds width there, so I'd go slightly shorter or longer. Beige, navy, brown or charcoal blazers all suit. Loafers, slingbacks or low boots, a structured bag and one or two pieces of jewelry finish it. Take the blazer off and the dress still looks complete.
13. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Denim Shirt And Black Trousers

A denim shirt makes a good light jacket in early fall. Wear it open over a fitted white, gray or black tank with tailored black trousers; the mix of casual denim and smart trousers balances well. Loafers or pointed flats make it work-ready and white sneakers make it weekend. Black accessories keep it clean, brown ones warm it up. For a sharper look, tuck the shirt into the trousers and wear it as the main top. Pick soft, light denim; heavy denim is stiff and won't fit under a coat later.
14. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Cardigan And Straight-Leg Jeans

A cardigan with straight jeans is the outfit I wear most in September. A cropped cardigan buttoned as a top shows the waist; a longer one over a tank is more relaxed. Oatmeal, rust, burgundy, dark green and navy look seasonal and go with most accessories. Ankle-length jeans suit loafers, flats or sneakers. Leave a few top buttons open; it creates a V that lengthens the neck and keeps a thicker knit from looking heavy. A suede bag adds texture, while a leather tote reads more professional.
15. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Shirt Dress And Ankle Boots

A long-sleeve shirt dress gives coverage without trapping heat. Cotton poplin, light denim and fluid prints suit early fall; corduroy is better saved for the colder end of the season. Use the dress belt or swap in a slim leather one. Low-heeled ankle boots in brown, black or taupe look best with a little space between the hem and boot top. Roll the sleeves when it's warm and add a cardigan or cropped jacket when it cools. Thin bike shorts underneath help on windy days.
16. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Bomber Jacket And Wide-Leg Jeans

A bomber adds a sporty touch without making the outfit look like gym clothes. Lightweight bombers in olive, navy, brown, cream or black over a fitted tee or fine knit work well with wide-leg jeans, which balance the jacket's short length. The ribbed hem of a bomber sits at the waist, so it pairs best with jeans that sit securely at the waist too. If the bomber is oversized, keep the base fitted. Cropped bombers suit petite frames. Retro sneakers, loafers or ankle boots finish it.
17. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Plaid Blazer And Loafers

Plaid feels like fall, and a lightweight blazer lets you wear it before the weather actually turns. Layer it over a solid fitted tee or fine knit tank, with dark straight jeans or tailored trousers. The plaid provides all the pattern, so keep jewelry minimal. I'd pick a small or medium check, since a big bold plaid is harder to repeat. Pull one color from the pattern for your shoes or bag; burgundy or dark brown loafers usually do it. Push up the sleeves for a relaxed shape.
18. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With T-Shirt And Slip Dress

A tee under a slip dress takes a summer piece into fall and makes it practical for daytime. A plain crewneck in white, cream, gray or black, under a midi slip in an autumn color or a quiet print. The tee needs to be thin and fitted; a thick or loose tee bunches under the bias-cut fabric. Adjustable straps help the neckline sit right over the tee. Loafers, ballet flats or low sneakers finish it, and a light cardigan over the shoulders handles a cool evening.
19. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Long Cardigan And Leggings

A long cardigan with leggings can look neat if every piece fits well. Thick, opaque leggings matter most; check them in daylight while bending. Add a fitted tank, long-sleeve tee or crisp shirt, then a long cardigan in camel, charcoal, navy or deep green. Knee-length is the most balanced length; on petite frames, mid-thigh often works better. Avoid stacking oversized pieces. A structured tote gives the soft layers some shape, and streamlined sneakers, loafers or flat ankle boots keep it light.
20. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Cropped Jacket And Maxi Skirt

A cropped jacket over a maxi skirt shows the waist and keeps a long skirt from swallowing you. Start with a fitted tank or short-sleeve knit, then add a denim, twill, suede or light leather jacket that ends near the waistband. A-line, column or soft pleated skirts all work. Hem length matters: petite women usually do better with a hem that shows the top of the shoe, while taller women can go full length. Heavy boots overpower light fabrics, so I'd use loafers, sleek sneakers or slim ankle boots.
21. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Polo Knit And Dark Jeans

A knit polo sits between a tee and a sweater, which suits the first cool weeks. Short or long sleeves in burgundy, navy, cream, chocolate or deep red, with dark straight jeans. The collar frames the face, so you need less jewelry; small earrings and a watch are plenty. Leave it out if it ends at the hip, or tuck it into high-rise jeans for definition. Loafers, pointed flats or low boots and a slim belt finish it. A top-handle bag dresses it up and a crossbody keeps it casual.
22. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Trench Coat And Sneakers

A trench over a tee and relaxed jeans is my go-to for a day of walking around a city. Beige, stone, navy or olive, worn open to keep it light. Straight or slightly tapered jeans look neatest over white, cream or retro sneakers. Hem the jeans so they don't stack heavily on the shoes; a lot of pooled denim over a sneaker looks sloppy. A roomy tote or a crossbody for commuting, and sunglasses or a cap depending on the mood. The trench handles light wind without the bulk of a lined winter coat.
23. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Knit Dress And Denim Jacket

A ribbed knit dress is an easy base in early fall. Short sleeves, long sleeves or sleeveless depending on your climate, with a denim jacket for structure. Look for a knit with enough weight to skim rather than cling; thin ribbing shows every line underneath. A belt is optional if the dress already follows your shape. Ankle boots, loafers or sneakers all work. On warm afternoons, tie the jacket around your waist or carry it, and add a pendant or hoops for a finishing detail.
24. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Vest And Maxi Dress

A tailored vest over a maxi dress gives a summer piece more structure. Black, cream, brown or pinstripe vests are the easiest. Make sure the vest ends above the fullest part of the hips; a longer vest adds width exactly where you don't want it. Wear it open for a long vertical line or buttoned for definition. Under it, sleeveless, short-sleeve or long-sleeve dresses work depending on the temperature. Loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots, plus a structured shoulder bag, keep it polished.
25. Beginning Of Fall Outfit With Scarf Jacket And Jeans

A scarf jacket, with the scarf built into the collar, gives you the feel of outerwear without winter weight. Wear it over a crewneck tee or fine knit with straight jeans. Camel, oatmeal, khaki and charcoal keep the attached scarf easy to style. The neckline already has a lot going on, so skip necklaces and big earrings. Pointed flats, loafers or low ankle boots and a structured bag finish it. If you can't find one, a cropped wool-blend jacket with a light scarf creates a similar look.
Planning for the Layer You'll Take Off at Noon
In early fall, you're often carrying a layer for half the day. Clients rarely plan for this, and it's why a nice outfit ends up looking awkward by the afternoon.
Pick a Top Layer That Folds Small
Fine knits, unlined blazers, light trenches and denim shirts fold into a tote. Chunky cardigans and leather jackets don't, so save those for days that stay cool. If you're carrying a small bag, choose a layer that can go over the shoulders or around the waist without looking messy.
Make the Base Outfit Look Complete
Before leaving the house, take the top layer off and look in the mirror. A tank alone might be too bare for the office; a bra that showed under a thin tee might be an issue. The outfit underneath should be one you're happy to wear on its own.
Choose Shoes for the Whole Day
Closed shoes like loafers, ballet flats and low ankle boots handle both a cool morning and a warm afternoon. Tall boots get hot by midday in early fall, so I'd save them for later in the season.
One Layer On, One Layer Off
Early fall outfits need to cope with a cool morning, a warm afternoon and a chilly evening in the same day. Light blazers, utility jackets, cardigans, trenches and denim layers let you keep wearing summer dresses, skirts, jeans and trousers a few weeks longer. Start with comfortable base pieces, then bring in fall through deeper colors, closed shoes, structured bags and textures like suede, leather, satin and fine knits. Think about your own climate and routine. The best outfits still look finished when one layer comes off.
