A couple costume works when both people are easy to name and neither is quietly miserable by nine o'clock. Disney gives you a deep bench for that: classic romances, animated best friends, heroic partners, rivals and a few television favourites, with older pairs sitting comfortably next to less obvious ones. For each pair below I've covered clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes, so you can build it from store pieces or thrift finds. Nothing here is fixed. Swap a skirt for trousers, add layers for the weather, or flip the characters' genders to suit the two of you. When I style a couple, the first question I ask is how long you'll be standing up, because that changes every other choice.

Balancing Effort Between the Two of You
The most common problem I see with couple costumes isn't the clothes. It's one partner in a full gown, wig and contour while the other wears a T-shirt and a pair of ears. In photos that gap shows more than any missing prop. I'd agree on an effort level together before anyone shops.
That doesn't mean both people need the same amount of costume. Some characters are simply easier: Prince Eric, Flynn or Ron are mostly ordinary clothes. If one of you wants the lighter role, give that person one strong, well-made detail to balance things out, such as a proper tailcoat, good boots or a sewn emblem rather than a printed one.
- Settle the hair first. A wig is a bigger commitment than any dress, so decide who is wearing one.
- Agree on makeup. If one of you won't wear face paint, choose a pair where the other doesn't need it either.
- Share the props. One prop between two people, held by whoever has a free hand, is easier than two.
1. Mickey And Minnie Mouse Couple Costume

Mickey and Minnie are the pair everyone knows. Mickey is a black long-sleeve top, red pants with white felt buttons, yellow shoes, white gloves, round ears and a black nose dot. Minnie wears a red polka-dot dress, or a matching skirt with a fitted black top, plus black tights, yellow heels or flats, gloves, ears and a big red bow. A low bun keeps her headband from sliding back. I'd stitch Mickey's buttons on rather than glue them, since felt on a knit peels at the edges once he moves. Rosy cheeks on both of you, and a heart-shaped bag or an oversized glove prop for photos, is plenty.
2. Aladdin And Jasmine Couple Costume

Turquoise, cream, purple and gold carry an Aladdin and Jasmine pair. Jasmine can wear a turquoise jumpsuit, a two-piece set or a long-sleeve maxi with gold flats and big earrings, plus a low bubble ponytail, a jewelled headband, warm eye makeup and a small gold lamp. Aladdin pairs loose cream pants with a white shirt, purple vest, red sash, soft brown shoes and a small red cap. For the bubble ponytail I use clear elastics every few inches, and it holds far better than a wig would. If the night is cold, fitted thermals under both outfits disappear completely. A rolled blue mat makes a light carpet prop, and the whole pair is easy to walk, dance or hand out candy in.
3. Belle And Beast Couple Costume

Belle and the Beast give you a ballroom look without theatre-weight pieces. Belle wears a yellow or gold maxi with a full skirt, elbow gloves, gold flats and a small rose necklace, with half-up hair, curled sections at the face, soft gold eye shadow and rosy lipstick. The Beast starts with black pants, a white ruffled shirt, a royal-blue tailcoat and black dress shoes, then adds a brown faux-fur collar, a furry ear headband and soft brown face shading. I always talk couples out of a full Beast mask. He can't eat, drink or hear well in one, and the coat and fur collar already tell the story. One silk rose under a light clear cover finishes it.
4. Ariel And Prince Eric Couple Costume

Ariel and Prince Eric bring seaside colour. Ariel wears a long turquoise skirt with a fitted purple top, nude flats and pearl or shell jewellery, with a bright red wavy wig or temporary colour, glowing makeup and a faux flower in her hair. Eric takes navy pants, a white collared shirt with rolled sleeves, a red waistband and black boots, with his dark hair swept back. A long red wig tangles at the nape against a collar or a partner's arm, so I braid the underside loosely before you leave. Carry a small plush fish or a seashell, not anything bulky. A purple long-sleeve bodysuit with a high-waisted skirt gives a more covered version that reads just as clearly.
5. Cinderella And Prince Charming Couple Costume

Pale blue and formal white make Cinderella and Prince Charming. She wears an icy-blue gown, a midi or a tulle skirt with a fitted top, a black velvet choker, pale-blue headband, small sparkly studs and silver flats standing in for glass slippers. A smooth high bun, cool eye shadow and a soft pink lip finish her. He wears white trousers and a white military-style jacket with gold trim and shoulder details, dark dress shoes and neatly combed hair. White trousers are the risky piece: they show every mark by the end of the night, so I'd pick a heavier cotton twill that isn't see-through. A clear acrylic slipper is the shared prop, and short capes or warm base layers help outdoors.
6. Snow White And Prince Couple Costume

Snow White and her Prince lean on primary colours, which is why guests get it straight away. She wears a blue bodice or puff-sleeve top, a long yellow skirt, red flats and a short red cape, with a smooth dark bob or a black chin-length wig and a red bow. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and red lipstick finish her. The Prince combines blue trousers, a cream tunic, a royal-blue overshirt, a red cape and brown knee boots. Puff sleeves collapse if the fabric is soft, so I add a small tulle strip inside each sleeve head to keep them round. A shiny faux apple in a little basket is all you need, and this pair suits a family event or a modest dress code.
7. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are the playful fairytale option. Rapunzel wears a lavender corset-style dress over a blouse, or a purple maxi skirt with a lace-up top, ballet flats, soft pink makeup and an extra-long blonde braid dotted with silk flowers. Flynn wears brown pants, a cream shirt, a teal vest, a brown belt and sturdy knee boots, with tousled hair and lightly filled brows. The braid is where I spend my time. I build the length from yarn braided over a foam core and clip it under her own hair, so it's light enough to loop over an arm. A foam or plastic frying pan is a joke for photos, not something to wave about, and a plush chameleon can ride on her shoulder.
8. Tiana And Prince Naveen Couple Costume

Tiana and Prince Naveen run on green, cream and gold. Tiana wears a pale-green gown with layered petal-shaped fabric, elbow gloves, green flats and a floral tiara, with a sleek bun, glowing skin, green-gold eye shadow and a berry lip. Naveen wears cream trousers, a white shirt, a pale-green vest, a gold sash and polished brown shoes, with a small gold crown if you want his royal version. Petal layers look best in a fabric with some body, such as organza or a stiff chiffon, because soft chiffon just hangs flat. A plush frog or a faux water-lily bouquet works as a shared prop. For something simpler, a green cocktail dress and a cream suit still read as this pair.
9. Anna And Kristoff Couple Costume

Anna and Kristoff are my first suggestion for a cold Halloween, because the characters already dress in layers. Anna wears a dark midi skirt, a black embroidered vest, a blue long-sleeve blouse, a magenta cape and practical black boots, with two auburn braids, light freckles and a small snowflake brooch. Kristoff combines dark pants with a charcoal tunic or sweater, a faux-fur-trimmed vest, a burgundy sash, gloves and winter boots. Printed trim is fine if embroidery feels like too much; I'd stitch it down at the ends so it doesn't lift. A small stuffed reindeer or a sled ornament is a safe prop. You can wear a real coat under Kristoff's vest and nobody will notice.
10. Hercules And Megara Couple Costume

Hercules and Megara contrast a hero with a sharp-tongued romantic. Hercules wears a brown faux-leather chest piece over a tan shirt, a blue cape, a pleated brown costume skirt over fitted shorts, and strapped sandals or brown boots, with a reddish-brown wig and a round gold medallion. Megara chooses a long purple column dress with draped fabric, gold accessories and flat sandals, plus a thick auburn wig in a big high ponytail, purple eye shadow and berry lipstick. A high ponytail wig pulls on the scalp after a while, so I'd buy a pre-styled ponytail piece that clips onto her own hair instead. Fabric and foam beat any realistic armour, and a plush winged horse is a friendly prop.
11. Mulan And Li Shang Couple Costume

A fan-made Mulan and Li Shang can be based on their training outfits rather than ceremonial dress. Mulan wears dark navy pants, a loose cream tunic, a blue waist sash, soft boots and a low ponytail tied with red ribbon, with natural makeup, softly defined brows and a plush dragon. Shang coordinates in brown pants, a burgundy tunic, a navy vest, a blue sash and black boots, with longer hair in a neat topknot or a short dark wig. I'd stick to plain costume fabrics and simple shapes rather than copying real historical garments. Light foam shoulder panels give structure without looking like actual armour, and this pair adjusts easily for any body or gender expression.
12. Tarzan And Jane Couple Costume

Tarzan and Jane can be a tasteful explorer pair with full coverage. Jane wears an ankle-length yellow skirt, a matching puff-sleeve blouse, a brown belt, lace-up boots and white gloves, plus a yellow hat, soft brunette curls and a sketchbook. Tarzan wears olive cargo pants, or brown shorts over fitted leggings, a tan sleeveless top and rugged boots, with a shoulder-length brown wig and a little bronzer. Silk leaves on a crossbody strap give the jungle feel without any revealing clothing. I'd hot-glue the leaves only at the stem and leave the rest loose, since fully glued leaves go stiff and crack. Binoculars or a plush gorilla is the shared prop.
13. Peter Pan And Wendy Couple Costume

Peter Pan and Wendy come together from thrift-store basics. Peter wears green leggings or slim pants, a belted green tunic with a jagged hem, brown ankle boots and a soft green cap with a red feather, plus tousled auburn hair and costume ears if he likes. Wendy wears a pale-blue ankle-length dress with puff sleeves, a darker blue ribbon at the waist, black flats and a matching ribbon in curled brown hair. Cutting the jagged hem is easy if the tunic is felt or fleece, because neither frays; a woven cotton will unravel unless you hem each point. A closed pouch of biodegradable gold confetti can be fairy dust, kept shut indoors. A plush crocodile rounds out the photos.
14. Mary Poppins And Bert Couple Costume

Mary Poppins and Bert combine tidy vintage clothes with props everyone knows. Mary wears a white high-neck blouse, a long navy skirt, a fitted navy jacket, a red bow tie, black ankle boots and a flower-trimmed hat, with a low bun, rosy cheeks and red lipstick, plus a closed black umbrella and a carpet-style bag. Bert wears dark trousers, a striped vest, a white shirt, a neck scarf, a flat cap and worn black boots. For his soot, I dab a little grey eye shadow on with a sponge, which stays where you put it, unlike charcoal or real soot. A light cardboard chimney brush finishes his side, and both outfits layer easily for a cold night.
15. Jack Skellington And Sally Couple Costume

Jack Skellington and Sally are a Halloween pair that stays friendly rather than graphic. Jack wears a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, an oversized bat bow tie, black gloves and black shoes, with white face paint, soft black eye circles and a simple curved smile, or a half-face skeleton. Sally wears a patchwork midi or maxi dress, striped tights, black ankle boots and a long straight red wig, with pale blue makeup, delicate drawn stitches, purple eye shadow and berry lipstick. Pale face paint is what transfers in a couple costume, mostly onto each other's shoulders. Set it with powder and keep a few wipes in a pocket. A small black silk rose or a plush ghost dog is enough for props.
16. Woody And Bo Peep Couple Costume

Woody and Bo Peep make a bright western pair. Woody wears jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red bandana, a brown cowboy hat, a belt and comfortable brown boots, with a sheriff star cut from gold felt. Bo Peep wears a pale-blue jumpsuit or cropped pants with a corset-style top, a pink waist sash, blue flats or boots and a large pink bow, with a practical ponytail and rosy makeup. Her crook is easiest from foam pipe insulation bent over a wooden dowel and wrapped in ribbon, which keeps it light and soft at the hook. A small plush sheep completes it, and almost everything else comes straight from a normal wardrobe.
17. Buzz Lightyear And Jessie Couple Costume

Buzz and Jessie are for couples who'd rather move than pose. Buzz starts with white pants and a white long-sleeve top, then adds green and purple felt panels for a light space-ranger suit, with white sneakers, a purple hood or cap and a touch of silver highlight. Jessie wears jeans, a white western shirt with yellow panels and cow-print trim, a red cowgirl hat, a braided red wig, brown boots, freckles and a wide belt. Foam wings and a pull-string ring on the shirt backs are fun details. I'd make Buzz's wings fold flat or attach with snaps, because he will want to sit in a car at some point. Skip hard plastic helmets so you can both see where you're going.
18. Mr. And Mrs. Incredible Couple Costume

Mr. and Mrs. Incredible get maximum recognition from very little. You both wear red long-sleeve unitards, or red tops and leggings, with black briefs-style shorts layered over them, black gloves, black eye masks, tall black boots and yellow belts. A homemade oval emblem goes on each chest in felt or removable fabric tape. He can sweep blond hair back with a little contour, and she wears a chin-length auburn bob with neutral makeup and red lipstick. Opaque fabric is the thing to check before you buy: a cheap red knit goes sheer when it stretches, so hold it up to a light first. Add thermals if it's cold, and leave out any combat props.
19. Carl And Ellie Couple Costume

Carl and Ellie suit couples who care about comfort and a bit of storytelling. Carl wears brown trousers, a white shirt, a dark cardigan, a bow tie, square glasses and supportive brown shoes, with silver hair spray and a light cane fitted with tennis balls. Ellie wears a pale-blue midi or a blouse and skirt, a patterned scarf, flats and stud earrings, with a short grey bob or washable silver colour. Temporary silver spray rubs off onto pillows and collars, so I'd spray it outdoors, let it dry fully and keep a dark towel on the car headrest. Soft age shading at the smile lines works better than drawn wrinkles. Add a grape-soda-style badge and balloons tied firmly to a small cardboard house.
20. WALL-E And EVE Couple Costume

WALL-E and EVE can be made into wearable human versions with cardboard, fabric and metallic touches. WALL-E wears brown pants, a mustard shirt, a brown utility vest, work boots and a square cardboard chest panel painted with mechanical details, plus round goggle glasses, messy hair and a smudge of bronze makeup. EVE wears an all-white jumpsuit or white top and leggings, white sneakers, silver gloves and a rounded white shoulder panel, with a smooth bun and crisp blue eyeliner. Cardboard is fine for one night, but it softens in damp air. I'd seal the chest panel with a coat of clear acrylic or mod podge and score it so it bends with him. A tiny faux plant in a boot is the shared prop.
21. Mike And Celia Couple Costume

Mike and Celia break up the run of romantic pairs with bright green and purple. Mike wears a lime-green top and pants, matching sneakers, green gloves and a cap with small soft horns, with one big felt eye on the shirt instead of any face gear. Celia wears a textured purple dress or jumpsuit with turquoise details, purple tights and comfortable heels or boots, with a purple wig shaped into a few bendy snake curls, turquoise eye shadow and pink lipstick. I make Celia's snakes from fabric tubes with pipe cleaners inside, pinned into the wig so they can be bent back into shape all night. Matching employee-style ID badges are a nice extra detail.
22. Nick Wilde And Judy Hopps Couple Costume

Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps need only a few costume pieces. Nick wears olive trousers, a pale-green shirt, a striped tie, brown shoes, a fox-ear headband and a detachable orange tail, with subtle fox nose makeup and warm contour. Judy wears navy pants, a blue fitted top, a light grey vest, black boots, bunny ears and grey gloves, with an optional short grey wig, a small pink nose and soft whiskers. Bunny ears that tall fold over by the second hour unless they have a wire or foam strip inside, and I'd check that before buying a headband. Badge-shaped accessories tie you together, and a carrot-shaped recorder adds a joke without bodysuits or heavy masks.
23. Robin Hood And Maid Marian Couple Costume

Robin Hood and Maid Marian bring cosy medieval layers with a woodland twist. Robin wears forest-green pants, a matching tunic, a brown belt, a rust vest, a green cap and brown boots, plus fox ears, a detachable tail, light whiskers and warm-toned makeup. Leave the archery props at home. Marian wears a long lavender dress, a sheer veil, a soft pink cape and lavender flats, with fox ears, an orange tail, a small gold crown and a low braided bun under the veil. Ears under a veil need help, so I pin the veil to the headband between the ears rather than draping it over them. A basket of silk wildflowers works as the shared accessory.
24. Simba And Nala Couple Costume

Simba and Nala become warm, easy humanised lions. Simba wears golden-brown pants, a tan sweater, a brown faux-fur vest, matching boots, lion ears and a soft tail, with a fluffy auburn wig or tousled hair, a small black nose and a few whiskers. Nala wears cream leggings, a beige tunic or sweater dress, tan ankle boots, round ears and a pale-gold tail, with a textured ponytail, soft feline eyeliner and warm neutrals. Paw gloves are optional, and I'd leave them off if you'll be eating, since they come off every five minutes anyway. A plush meerkat or warthog gives you a playful photo, and the neutral palette works well in autumn light.
25. Lady And The Tramp Couple Costume

A humanised Lady and the Tramp avoids full mascot suits. Lady wears a rust-brown dress, pale-brown tights, matching flats and a blue collar with a gold tag, with long floppy ears on a curled auburn wig, a brown nose, soft freckles and whiskers. Tramp wears grey trousers, a charcoal shirt, a grey vest, dark sneakers and a red collar, with scruffy ears, a tail and grey face shading. Long ears attached to a wig sit more naturally than ears on a headband, since they move with the hair. I sew them on with a few loose stitches at the wig base. A clean takeout carton with faux noodles is a good prop, kept for photos rather than real food.
26. Pongo And Perdita Couple Costume

Pongo and Perdita may be the easiest DIY pair here. You both start with white shirts and pants, jumpsuits or sweater dresses covered in removable black felt spots, then add white sneakers, spotted floppy ears, white tails and simple black noses. Pongo wears a red collar and short or tucked hair under a spotted cap; Perdita a blue collar, soft curls, red lipstick and a little winged liner. Vary your spot layouts so the two of you look related rather than identical. I attach the spots with a dab of fabric glue in the centre only, which lets them peel off cleanly afterwards. A small plush puppy in a tote finishes it, and it layers easily over warm clothes.
27. Linguini And Colette Couple Costume

Linguini and Colette suit food-loving couples. Linguini wears checked pants, a white double-breasted chef coat, a neck scarf, non-slip black shoes and a tall chef's hat, with messy reddish-brown hair and a plush grey rat peeking from the hat or shoulder. Colette wears slim black pants, a chef coat with rolled sleeves, a black apron, dark clogs and a short brown bob, with defined liner and a red lip. A plush rat on a tall hat tips the hat forward, so I'd sew a small comb inside the brim or put the rat on his shoulder instead. A wooden spoon and a small saucepan are safe props, and fabric name patches personalise the coats for a casual party or a workplace day.
28. Kim Possible And Ron Stoppable Couple Costume

Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable come almost entirely out of a normal wardrobe. Kim wears loose olive cargo pants, a fitted black mock-neck top, black gloves, a brown utility belt and chunky black boots, with a long straight copper-red wig, natural makeup and a toy communicator. Ron wears tan cargo pants, a black long-sleeve shirt, a brown belt and black sneakers, with messy centre-parted blond hair. A plush naked mole-rat on his shoulder or belt gets the laughs. Safety-pin it through the shirt from inside rather than clipping it, because a clip lets go the first time he bends over. Foam or plastic gadgets keep it clearly a costume, and it's a strong pick for last-minute plans.
29. Troy And Gabriella Couple Costume

Troy and Gabriella feel more like a coordinated outfit than cosplay. Troy wears a red basketball jersey over a white T-shirt, athletic shorts or track pants, white crew socks and clean basketball sneakers, with a tousled brown wig and a light red basketball. Gabriella wears a red-and-white school cardigan, a white blouse, a pleated red skirt or tailored pants, knee socks and white sneakers, with soft waves and natural makeup. Print a made-up wildcat-style emblem rather than official branding, and musical-note pins or red pennants link the two looks. This is one of the few pairs here where I'd say your normal sneakers are part of the costume, so it's an easy night on the feet.
30. Zed And Addison Couple Costume

Zed and Addison are a newer pair with sporty pieces and bright hair. Zed wears grey pants with a distressed finish, a green athletic jacket, a printed grey shirt and green high-tops, with green hair spray, grey-toned makeup and clean neon-green accents. Addison wears a white-and-pink cheer uniform over shorts, white sneakers, knee socks and a long white wig with a blue streak, plus pink eye shadow, shimmer and a small pom-pom. Coloured hair spray dulls and flakes if you layer it heavily, so I spray two light passes from arm's length and let each one dry. Matching wristbands tie you together, and fabric tears with printed patches keep it lively rather than gory.
Face Paint for Someone Who Has Never Worn It
Many of these pairs ask for a small nose, whiskers, freckles or a pale base. If one of you has never worn costume makeup, test it a few days before. A dab on the inside of the wrist, left for a day, tells you whether the skin reacts. I'd use water-activated or cream face paint made for skin, not craft paint or markers.
Keeping it on and getting it off
- Moisturise first and let it sink in, then apply thin layers. Thick paint cracks as the face moves.
- Press translucent powder over each layer with a puff. It cuts down on transfer to collars and to each other.
- Do dark details like noses and whiskers last, so they don't smear through a pale base.
- Remove it with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water before washing, rather than scrubbing with soap.
When the Party Moves Outdoors
Half of the outfits above are light gowns, white suits or thin knits. If you'll be outside for long, plan the warm layer as part of the costume. A fitted thermal under a tunic or bodice disappears, and a cape, a long coat or a cardigan already belongs to plenty of these characters, including Kristoff, Mary Poppins, Carl and the Prince.
Rain is harder on the costume than cold. Cardboard softens, felt spots can lift and curled wigs drop. Carry a compact umbrella, keep cardboard pieces sealed, and if the forecast looks wet, pick the pair whose look comes from clothes rather than props.
Two Signature Details Each Is Plenty
A couple costume should look like a matched set without making either person uncomfortable. Whichever pair you land on, start with the characters' main colours and silhouette, then add one or two signature pieces each, such as a bow, a collar, a crown or an emblem. Wigs, makeup and props should help the look, not become something you manage all night. Swap garments, flip genders and pick shoes that suit your actual plans. If you're torn between two pairs, I'd go with the one where both of you can sit, eat and hold hands without taking anything off. That's usually the one you're still happy in at the end.
