You don't need armour, a sewing machine or a room full of craft supplies to make a convincing anime character. What makes these thirty read is colour blocking, a decent wig and one or two signature props, and most of the clothing is already in a closet or a thrift rack. I build closet cosplays the same way every time: I work out which two details a fan would spot first, spend my effort there, and let everything else be ordinary clothes in the right colours. Skirt lengths, sleeves, shoes and makeup can all be adjusted for comfort without losing the character. If you're heading to a convention rather than a Halloween party, check its prop rules before you make anything that looks like a weapon.

Wig Styling Is Where Closet Cosplay Wins
Almost every character below is ordinary clothing plus a wig, so the wig decides whether people recognise you. A cheap synthetic wig straight out of the bag usually looks shiny and flat, sits too high on the forehead and sheds on your shoulders. A little work the night before fixes most of that.
- Shake it out and brush it with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward, never from the root down, which pulls fibres out of the wefts.
- Cut bangs a little longer than you want, wearing the wig on your head, then trim. Synthetic fibre springs up once it's cut and styled.
- Dust a little dry shampoo or translucent powder through it to knock back the plastic shine.
- For spikes, use strong-hold spray in thin layers and dry each with a cool hairdryer. Heat above a low setting can frizz or melt non-heat-resistant fibre.
- Wear a wig cap and two or three bobby pins through the wefts at the temples and nape so it doesn't creep back during the day.
If you're choosing between spending more on the wig or on the clothes, I'd put it on the wig nearly every time. The thicker wigs hold buns, braids and pigtails without showing the cap, and they survive being restyled for next year.
1. Luffy Costume With Red Vest And Straw Hat

Luffy from One Piece is the one I suggest to people who have never cosplayed. A sleeveless red vest or an open red button-down does the top, with a plain camisole underneath if you want more coverage, then knee-length blue denim shorts and a wide yellow sash at the waist. A short black wig with messy ends, or your own hair tousled, is enough. The small scar under one eye goes on with brown eyeliner, drawn as a short curve. Everything rides on the straw hat with its red band, so buy a hat with a brim stiff enough not to flop, and add a chin cord if you'll be outdoors. Brown sandals or slip-ons keep you comfortable for hours.
2. Kiki Costume With Navy Dress And Red Bow

Kiki's outfit from Kiki's Delivery Service is really just a loose navy dress, knee length with short sleeves, so you can move and sit in it. The red bow is what people look for. I make it oversized and stiff, either on a black bob wig or on a wide headband over your own hair; a floppy bow reads as a hair accessory rather than as Kiki. Rosy blush, a little mascara and a soft pink lip keep her young. A woven shoulder bag and a light decorative broom with no sharp bristle ends make sense together, and a plush black cat on your arm settles the question for anyone still guessing. Red flats, Mary Janes or low sneakers will last a long day.
3. Sailor Moon Costume With Blue Skirt And Red Bow

Sailor Moon's uniform simplifies well if you think of it as a sailor outfit first and a magical-girl costume second. A white fitted top with a blue sailor collar, a pleated blue skirt and a big red chest bow cover the essentials; the back bow is a bonus if you enjoy crafting. The hair is the hard part. A long blonde wig styled into two high buns with long pigtails needs to be a heavy-density wig, because thin wigs show the cap once you pull hair into buns. Painted foam circles make light bun covers. Winged liner, rosy cheeks and a pink lip, plus white gloves, a red choker and a gold crescent, then red knee-high or ankle boots.
4. Anya Forger Costume With Black Dress And Gold Headpieces

Anya Forger from Spy x Family starts with a simple long-sleeved black dress. If yours has no gold trim, add gold ribbon at the cuffs and hem with temporary fabric tape, which holds better on cotton than on slippery polyester. White knee socks and black Mary Janes keep her school look. A short pastel pink wig with small side sections frames the face. Her cone-shaped hair pieces matter most, and I make them from felt-wrapped foam on snap clips, kept small, because oversized cones tip forward. Soft pink blush, barely any liner. Carry a plush penguin or a small school bag. Kids, teens and petite adults carry Anya most convincingly, since her proportions are so young.
5. Yor Forger Costume With Red Sweater And Black Skirt

Yor Forger in her everyday clothes is far easier than her formal assassin dress. A fitted red turtleneck, a high-waisted black midi skirt and opaque black tights, with a wide black belt pulling in the waist. Style a long black wig with straight bangs and two loose face-framing pieces, gathering the rest low at the back. The gold headband and small gold drop earrings are what move it from red sweater to Yor, so don't skip them. Smooth foundation, red lipstick and lightly defined eyes. I'd carry a structured black handbag or a grocery tote instead of a weapon prop. Black ankle boots or comfortable pumps finish it.
6. Nobara Kugisaki Costume With Navy Uniform And Bob Wig

Nobara Kugisaki's Jujutsu Kaisen uniform needs no construction at all. Wear a dark navy button-front jacket with a matching knee-length skirt and opaque black tights. Can't find a high-collar jacket? A navy cardigan buttoned over a black mock-neck top gives the same line from a few feet away. A warm brown bob wig with neat side-swept bangs, or short natural hair smoothed with cream. Defined lashes, peach blush and a muted rose lip suit her. For the nail references, cut a few oversized nail shapes from foam rather than using anything metal, then add a small brown crossbody bag and brown loafers or low brown ankle boots.
7. Gojo Costume With Black Uniform And White Wig

Gojo shows how one accessory can carry a plain outfit. A high-neck black jacket and straight black pants, or a black tracksuit if you want cheap and comfortable. The spiky white wig takes a little strong-hold product; white wigs show every flyaway, so I style it the night before and leave it on a head form. Here's my warning about the blindfold: a solid one blocks your view on stairs and in crowds. Use a thin, loosely woven black fabric you can actually see through, or swap in narrow dark sunglasses for a long day. Even foundation and a little cool shading at the jaw is all the makeup he needs. Plain black boots or sneakers.
8. Yuji Itadori Costume With Red Hoodie And Black Pants

Yuji Itadori's uniform is sporty and comfortable enough for a full day on your feet. Look for a black zip jacket or hoodie with a bright red hood and collar. If you already own a black hoodie, pin or tape red fabric inside the hood and around the neckline; safety pins on the inside hold better than tape through a crowd. Tapered black pants and vivid red high-tops. A short pink wig with darker roots gets its spikes from styling wax worked in with your fingertips. Natural makeup, maybe a little brow definition. A small red backpack is a harmless prop, and the whole outfit layers easily over a thermal on a cold night.
9. Mikasa Ackerman Costume With Red Scarf And Brown Jacket

Mikasa Ackerman's Attack on Titan look works without any of the gear rig. A white button-down, fitted white or beige pants and a cropped brown jacket, with a printed wing patch attached by removable tape if you want it. The red scarf is the detail people spot first. Pick a soft, deep red, wrap it once and tuck or pin the ends so they don't work loose and drag. A short black bob wig with long side bangs, defined brows, subtle contour and a neutral lip. Decorative brown straps over the pants look great, but leave them loose enough to sit and climb stairs. Tall brown boots and a tan canvas bag finish her.
10. Light Yagami Costume With Brown Suit And Notebook

Light Yagami from Death Note is my favourite last-minute costume because it's office clothes. A medium-brown suit, white dress shirt and red tie, or a brown blazer with khaki or dark brown trousers if there's no suit in the house. The wig matters more than people expect: a medium-length brown wig with layered bangs swept across the forehead turns a man in a suit into Light. Keep the skin even and the brows defined, with light contour on the cheekbones. The notebook does the rest. I'd use a plain black cover with your own lettering and a capped pen. Dark brown dress shoes or loafers and a black messenger bag.
11. Misa Amane Costume With Black Dress And Blonde Pigtails

Misa Amane's gothic style builds easily from thrifted black pieces. A modest black ruffled dress, or a lace-trimmed black top over a pleated skirt, with striped or solid black tights and fingerless lace gloves. A long blonde wig in two high pigtails with straight bangs; a wig with a lace or skin top keeps the parting from looking like a mesh grid. Dark liner, mascara, cool pink blush and a berry lip give drama without going too far for a family party. Layer a black ribbon choker, a simple geometric pendant and several light bracelets. Platform ankle boots are the accurate choice, but I'd swap to regular black boots if you're walking all day.
12. Makima Costume With White Shirt And Black Tie

Makima from Chainsaw Man is mostly an office outfit. Tuck a crisp white shirt into tailored black trousers and add a slim black tie, with a plain black blazer on top if it's cold. The copper-red wig with straight bangs and a loose braid down the back is where your effort goes; choose one long enough that the braid falls well past your shoulder blades. A natural base and muted red lip. Coloured contact lenses only if they've been fitted and prescribed by an eye-care professional, never novelty ones; warm brown eye makeup suggests her gaze safely. A manila folder or black office bag as the prop, with black loafers or low pumps.
13. Power Costume With White Shirt And Red Horns

Power's everyday Chainsaw Man outfit is a white shirt, a blue tie and relaxed black trousers, worn tucked or loose as you like. A long strawberry-blonde wig with messy layers and side-swept bangs. The horns make her, and they should be small and red. I cut them from foam, heat-shape them slightly, paint them and glue them to a fabric-covered headband so the band doesn't slide. Light foam stays put; anything heavy rotates backward within an hour. Peach blush, sharp liner and a coral lip. A small carton-shaped purse or red crossbody stands in for character props, and sneakers or low boots handle a crowded hall.
14. Denji Costume With White Shirt And Loose Tie

Denji is another nearly no-sew Chainsaw Man costume. A slightly rumpled white shirt with rolled sleeves, a loose black tie and straight black trousers. The short, tousled blonde wig is what people recognise, so work styling paste through it and make the spikes uneven; a neat wig looks wrong on him. Lightly smudged brown liner and a little shading under the eyes give the tired look. The pull cord on his chest is soft red ribbon threaded through a light foam tab, pinned so it sits flat over the shirt. A folded paper lunch bag is an easy prop. Black lace-ups or worn-in sneakers.
15. Naruto Costume With Orange Tracksuit And Headband

Naruto's orange shows up from across a room. Start with an orange zip jacket and matching athletic pants, and add black panels with temporary adhesive if you want accuracy, though it isn't needed for recognition. A short spiky blonde wig, strands separated with wig-safe spray. The headband is the detail I'd put real care into: blue or black cloth with a light silver foam plate and a simple spiral, sitting level on the forehead. Three whisker lines per cheek in brown eyeliner wear better than heavy face paint and come off with ordinary cleanser. Add a tan pouch or orange backpack, and pick black sneakers over open-toe boots for a long day.
16. Sakura Haruno Costume With Red Tunic And Pink Wig

Sakura Haruno's early outfit is a good first DIY. A sleeveless red tunic or long red top with white trim; white bias tape sewn or fabric-glued around the edges gives you that trim if your top is plain. Fitted black shorts underneath, and pale elbow-length gloves if you want one more detail. A chin-length pink wig with a neat side part and a red cloth headband on top. Fresh makeup: rosy blush, light pink lipstick, defined upper lashes. A small beige waist pouch adds a practical finish. Choose dark ankle boots, black sneakers or low sandals with secure straps. The outfit is light, so you can move freely at a party or a convention.
17. Hinata Hyuga Costume With Lavender Hoodie And Navy Pants

Hinata Hyuga's casual outfit is one of the most comfortable on this list. A pale lavender zip hoodie with cream or white sleeves over straight navy pants; a plain lavender jacket works if colour-blocked ones are hard to find. Long blue-black wig, blunt bangs, straight layers at the shoulders. Lavender-grey eyeshadow, pink blush and a neutral lip. Skip the white contact lenses. They limit vision and aren't worth the risk, and softly brightened eye makeup suggests her pale eyes well enough. A small beige pouch and a navy cloth headband, then black ankle boots or navy sneakers.
18. Ash Ketchum Costume With Blue Vest And Red Cap

Ash Ketchum suits adults, teens and kids, which makes him a good family or group pick. A blue sleeveless vest over a white tee and light-wash jeans. Most of your effort belongs on the cap: red and white with a simple green felt symbol, glued with fabric glue rather than hot glue, which peels off a curved cap brim. A short black wig with pointed sections around the ears, or your own dark hair spiked. Fresh, minimal makeup. Green fingerless gloves and a small yellow backpack add colour, and a light foam ball in red and white is easy to carry. Blue-and-white sneakers suit a day of walking.
19. Jessie Costume With White Uniform And Purple Wig

Jessie from Team Rocket has a bold shape but stays comfortable and family-friendly. Wear a white long-sleeved top with white high-waisted pants or leggings, and a fitted black tank underneath for coverage. The big red letter is cut from felt, and I'd stitch it on with a few loose stitches; felt glued to stretchy fabric pops off when the shirt stretches. Elbow-length black gloves and a wide grey belt. Her curved side ponytail is the tricky part, and light padding inside a magenta-purple wig keeps the curve without weight. Sharp liner, purple shadow and rose lipstick. Carry a foam ball or a plush cat, and wear low-heeled white ankle boots.
20. Bulma Costume With Pink Dress And Blue Wig

Bulma's early Dragon Ball outfit has very few layers. A short-sleeved pink T-shirt dress with fitted shorts underneath, a wide purple scarf at the neck and a blue belt or belt bag at the waist. The long turquoise-blue wig in a side braid is the thing people recognise; braid it before the event and secure the end with a clear elastic, since synthetic hair slips out of loose braids. Blue eyeliner, peach blush and glossy pink lip. A small painted cardboard capsule container or a lavender crossbody. Purple socks and red sneakers. Changing the dress length and fit makes her easy to adapt for any body type.
21. Goku Costume With Orange Gi And Blue Undershirt

Goku's orange training clothes are comfortable and loud. A loose orange martial-arts top and pants over a fitted blue tee, with a blue sash at the waist and blue wristbands. His wig is the hardest single piece on this list. Big upward spikes need a stiff, well-made spiked wig or a lot of product and patience, and a top-heavy wig pulls backward all day, so check that it sits balanced before you buy. Strong brows and a little warm contour, no elaborate face paint. A small orange drawstring bag carries your things. Leave combat props at home. Blue fabric boots, high-tops or athletic shoes.
22. Vegeta Costume With Pink Shirt And Yellow Pants

Vegeta's pink Badman shirt from Dragon Ball Z is funny and much easier than armour. An oversized hot-pink short-sleeved shirt with loose mustard-yellow pants. The lettering across the back can be removable felt letters; on a polyester shirt they need a few stitches at the corners, because glue lets go after a few hours of movement. Or leave the shirt plain for a quieter take. A black wig shaped into a tall widow's-peak with firm, light spikes. Angular brows, a touch of contour, a serious face. A small blue duffel bag, an optional brown belt, and green or teal sneakers with white socks.
23. Mitsuha Miyamizu Costume With School Uniform And Red Cord

Mitsuha Miyamizu from Your Name is quiet and simple, and her red braided hair cord makes the whole costume. A white short-sleeved blouse with a dark sailor collar and red neck ribbon, a charcoal pleated skirt and dark knee socks. A medium-length dark brown wig with straight bangs, part of it tied back with the red cord. I braid the cord from three strands of red embroidery thread or thin cord myself, as ready-made ones are often too thin to see. Soft brown liner, peach blush and tinted balm. A navy school bag and a handwritten note are gentle references. Black loafers or Mary Janes. For subtle anime cosplay, she's ideal.
24. Tohru Honda Costume With Blue School Uniform

Tohru Honda's Fruits Basket uniform is gentle, modest and made from familiar pieces. A blue cardigan or fitted school blazer over a white collared blouse, a matching blue pleated skirt and a small blue ribbon at the neck. Dark knee socks or opaque tights. A long warm-brown wig with straight bangs and soft face-framing layers suits her softness. Rosy cheeks, brown mascara, pale pink lipstick. A simple school tote and a small rice-ball plush are an affectionate nod to the series. Black loafers or low Mary Janes. With the cardigan and tights, this is one of the warmer choices on the list for a cold October night.
25. Kagome Higurashi Costume With Green School Uniform

Kagome Higurashi's green-and-white uniform needs no special crafting. A white blouse with a green sailor collar and red neck ribbon, plus a green pleated skirt. Getting the green right matters more than anything else; too bright and it looks like a sports kit, so look for a mid forest green. White crew socks stay close to the original and add coverage. A long black wig with straight bangs. Brown liner, subtle blush and a sheer pink lip. The yellow backpack is her main prop, and a light necklace of craft-store beads is a nice extra. Finish the Inuyasha look in brown loafers or supportive black Mary Janes.
26. Inuyasha Costume With Red Robe And White Wig

Inuyasha looks dramatic, but the loose layers make him manageable. A long red wrap top with wide sleeves over matching red pants; a red martial-arts uniform or a pajama-style set is a cheap base. Tie a simple red sash, loose enough to move. The long silver-white wig with choppy bangs is the bulk of the work, and the ears go on a padded headband hidden under the wig. I sew the ears from felt over a small foam core so they stand up instead of folding. Soft contour, defined brows, a touch of gold shadow. A light beaded necklace. Skip big props and wear flat black boots or slip-ons.
27. Edward Elric Costume With Red Coat And Black Outfit

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist is all about a bold red coat over black. A fitted black tank or high-neck top with black pants, then a long red coat with a hood; a thrifted red trench is a good starting point. A wide brown belt and black fingerless gloves. A golden-blonde wig with long bangs and a single braid down the back. Defined brows, subtle contour and a neutral lip. For the automail arm, a white glove or silver fabric sleeve on one side is a light reference, and much kinder on a long day than hard armour. A silver pocket watch on a chain and black lace-up boots.
28. Winry Rockbell Costume With Coveralls And Yellow Bandana

Winry Rockbell's mechanic outfit is a closet cosplay with useful pockets. A fitted black tank under blue coveralls, the top half tied firmly around the waist; I knot the sleeves twice, because one knot slides down the hips within an hour. Choose a black tee if you'd like more coverage. A brown utility belt with empty pouches and light plastic tools. A long blonde wig in a loose ponytail with side bangs, a yellow bandana tied over it. Freckles, peach blush and soft brown liner. A small painted cardboard toolbox, then brown work boots with flat soles for walking.
29. Tanjiro Kamado Costume With Checkered Haori

Tanjiro Kamado's green-and-black checked haori is what people recognise. Begin with a dark brown or black buttoned uniform, or a black mock-neck and loose black pants. Over it goes a knee-length checked robe; if you can't buy one, a green-and-black buffalo-check fabric sewn as a simple rectangle haori takes an afternoon. A short burgundy wig with swept-back sections. The forehead scar goes on in red-brown face paint or liner, kept small. Rectangular earrings in cardstock or foam. The box backpack is cardboard, and keep it light with padded straps. White leg wraps over dark socks with flat black shoes.
30. Nezuko Kamado Costume With Pink Kimono

Nezuko Kamado has more layers than everyday clothes, but she stays beginner-friendly. A pink patterned robe or wrap dress with a dark brown ankle-length robe over it, held by a wide red-and-white sash and a thin cord. A long black wig with warm orange tips; clip-in coloured extensions save you from dyeing the wig. Pink eye makeup, rosy blush, a soft berry lip. The bamboo mouthpiece is a light green foam tube on comfortable ribbon, and plan to take it off whenever you talk or eat, since it makes speech muffled. Pink leg wraps and dark flat sandals finish this modest Demon Slayer look.
Glue, Tape or Thread for Each Little Detail
The small add-ons on these costumes, felt letters, trim, horns, ears and hair pieces, are what fall off first. Matching the fixing method to the fabric saves you from crouching in a corridor with a glue stick.
Felt and trim on clothing
Fabric glue holds well on cotton and canvas. On polyester, knits and anything that stretches, glue cracks as the fabric moves, so a few stitches at the corners are the reliable fix. Iron-on adhesive works if the shirt is cotton and you won't need it plain again. Double-sided fashion tape is fine for trim on cuffs and hems for one evening, not for a full convention day.
Foam pieces on headbands and clips
Craft foam and EVA foam both take a quick blast of heat to curve, which helps horns and hair pieces sit naturally. Hot glue joins foam to foam well, but it turns brittle in cold air and often pops loose outdoors on a cold night. I wrap headbands in fabric before gluing anything on, since glue grips fabric far better than smooth plastic, and I seal painted foam so the colour doesn't rub off on the wig.
A small repair kit
Safety pins, fashion tape, a few bobby pins, a travel sewing kit and a mini tube of fabric glue fit in a sandwich bag. Most mid-event costume failures are fixable in a couple of minutes with one of those.
Luffy, Makima or Gojo for a Last-Minute Night
If you're short on time, Luffy, Light, Makima and Gojo come almost entirely from a normal closet, with one prop or wig carrying each. Pick the character whose strongest detail you can do well, a colour combination, a hairstyle, a uniform, a scarf or a headpiece, and put your money there. A neatly styled wig and light accessories do more for a simple outfit than extra layers. Wear the whole costume around the house for an hour before the day: sit, climb stairs, look around, eat. Pack safety pins and fashion tape. Treat accuracy as a starting point; a version you're comfortable in is the one you'll enjoy wearing.
