Dark hair is a gift at Halloween. A huge share of the characters people know on sight, from storybook heroines and cartoon favorites to screen icons and gothic classics, already have brown or near-black hair, so you can skip a hot, itchy wig and put the effort into the clothes. When I plan a costume around someone's own hair, I look at length first, because a character with a bob needs either a short cut or a good pinning trick. The forty ideas below each list the clothes, the hair, the makeup, the shoes and one easy prop, and most can be adjusted for a cold night or a school event.

Sorting These Characters by Hair Length
The fastest way to narrow forty options is to start from the hair you have tonight. I group them like this when someone asks me which one to pick.
- Long hair, worn down: Morticia, Vanessa, Sailor Mars, Moana, Rory, the vampire and the disco look all want length and shine.
- Long hair, put up: Wednesday's braids, Leia's buns, Megara's high pony, Holly's twist, Padmé's braided bun and Priscilla's bouffant.
- Shoulder length: Daria, Tina, Carmen and the grunge look work with hair that just touches the shoulders.
- Short or bob: Velma, Mavis, Edna, Betty Boop, Snow White and Mirabel. If your hair is long, the faux bob trick further down gets you there.
Very dark brown and black hair suits Wednesday, Morticia and Edna best, while lighter or warmer browns look right on Belle, Hermione and Moana. None of that is a rule, but it helps the character read at a glance.
1. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Dress

Wednesday Addams is the first costume I suggest to anyone with long brown hair, since the two low braids and the razor-straight center part are most of the character. Find a knee-length black dress with a white collar and cuffs, or wear a fitted white shirt under a sleeveless one. Opaque black tights and loafers or lace-up ankle boots keep you comfortable. I braid the hair slightly damp with a little gel so it stays smooth all evening. Keep the face pale and matte with a soft gray under the eyes and a muted berry lip, carry an old-looking book, and don't smile.
2. Rumi KPop Demon Hunters Costume

Rumi's stage outfit is a bright fan-made build rather than a store costume. A cropped yellow jacket over a white fitted top, high-waisted purple shorts and a wide decorative belt make the base, with patterned tights or knee socks and platform sneakers you can dance in. Her long hair goes in a high braided ponytail, and clipping purple strands into the braid as you plait it holds them far better than adding them afterwards. Sharp winged liner, rosy blush, gloss and a little face-safe shimmer suit the pop-star finish. Carry a handheld microphone or a metallic folding fan in place of a weapon.
3. Belle Village Dress Costume

Belle's blue village dress is one of the most practical storybook costumes there is. A pale blue midi, or a blue skirt with a matching top, goes over a white puff-sleeve blouse, and a plain white apron ties at the waist. Brown flats, Mary Janes or low ankle boots will last a long night. Tie the hair in a low ponytail with a blue ribbon and leave a soft piece loose at the face. I use a ribbon wired at the edges or a velvet one, since thin satin ribbon slides off the end of a ponytail. Peach blush, lashes and a rosy lip, plus a basket with a hardback book, finish her.
4. Snow White Costume With Red Bow

Snow White works on primary colors: a royal-blue fitted top with short puff sleeves and a long yellow skirt, plus a white collar and a short red cape. Choose yellow flats, black Mary Janes or low red heels to suit the event. Her hair is short, so short curls work best; longer hair can go into a faux bob, which I explain further down. A wide red bow headband sits near the crown. Keep the makeup fresh, with lashes, soft blush and red lipstick, rather than chalk-white stage paint. A shiny artificial apple or a small woodland plush is enough.
5. Velma Dinkley Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma comes together from ordinary clothes. Wear an oversized orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt and orange knee socks, then red Mary Janes, loafers or low block heels. Her chin-length bob with bangs can be faked by pinning longer hair under at the nape. The square glasses with clear lenses matter more than anything else, so I'd buy those first. Keep the skin matte and the lip a warm nude. A magnifying glass, notebook or flashlight is the prop, and the thick sweater makes her one of the warmest choices for walking outdoors on a cold night.
6. Mia Thermopolis Princess Costume

Mia Thermopolis lets you play the before-and-after princess, and long brown hair suits the after. Choose a white strapless or sleeveless midi and long white gloves, then add silver flats or low heels, a delicate tiara and a sparkling necklace. Straighten the hair and pull the front sections back neatly. I anchor the tiara with bobby pins crossed under each comb, since straightened hair is slippery. Luminous skin, pink blush, a touch of silver shadow and gloss keep it soft. Carry a small structured bag or a handwritten royal speech, and if the dress feels too formal, a white fit-and-flare does the same job.
7. Rory Gilmore Chilton Uniform Costume

Rory Gilmore's Chilton uniform is cozy and easy. Layer a navy blazer over a pale blue button-down with a striped tie, add a knee-length plaid skirt and navy knee socks or opaque tights. Brown loafers, saddle shoes or clean white sneakers are fine. Wear the hair straight with a center or soft side part, and keep the makeup understated: brushed brows, mascara and a rosy neutral lip. A stack of classic books, a notebook and a takeaway coffee cup with a plain café design do most of the storytelling. I'd look for the blazer secondhand, since school blazers turn up often.
8. Blair Waldorf School Uniform Costume

Blair Waldorf is the same uniform made sharper. Start with a white button-down, a plaid pleated skirt and a fitted navy blazer, then add a slim ribbon tie, opaque tights and black loafers or low block-heel pumps. Glossy waves and a bold satin headband are her signature, and a padded headband stays in place better than a thin one. Keep the eyes softly defined with pink blush and berry lipstick. Pearl-look earrings and a structured handbag with a notebook of pretend social plans fit her. On a cold night a tailored wool coat suits her better than a puffer.
9. Elphaba Green Witch Costume

Elphaba is dramatic without being scary. A long black dress with a fitted bodice, high neck and pleated or layered skirt goes under a structured black jacket or cape, with a tall pointed hat and lace-up black boots. Loose waves or a low braid sit under the hat. The green is the hard part: use a skin-safe water-activated or cream face paint, blend it past the jaw and into the hairline, then press translucent powder over it so it doesn't rub onto the collar. Black gloves cut the area you need to paint. Smoky gray eyes, defined brows and plum lips finish the face, and a book or small broom is the prop.
10. Holly Golightly Black Dress Costume

Holly Golightly's black dress has never stopped being a good costume. Wear a long or midi black sheath with long black gloves and comfortable kitten heels, then add a big pearl-look necklace, sparkling studs and large dark sunglasses. Sweep the hair into a high French twist or full bun with short bangs or face-framing pieces, and set a small jeweled tiara at the front. I tease the crown lightly before twisting, which gives the twist something to grip. Winged liner, peach blush and a soft pink lip, plus a paper coffee cup and a pastry bag, tell the story.
11. Betty Boop Red Dress Costume

Betty Boop needs short dark curls and a red dress. Choose a knee-length body-skimming red dress with a sweetheart or simple sleeveless neckline, plus sheer black tights and red or black low heels with ankle straps. If your hair is long, set pin curls overnight and pin the lengths under into a bob. Draw curved thin brows, a black wing, round rosy cheeks and a bright red lip. Gold hoops and a red garter over the tights give the cartoon detail without tipping into anything risqué. A small heart-shaped bag finishes it, and the dress is easy to move in.
12. Wonder Woman Costume With Red Bodice

Wonder Woman is red, blue and gold, and you don't need hard armor. A fitted red top with a gold emblem or trim goes with a blue skater skirt or shorts over opaque tights. Add a gold belt, wrist cuffs and a simple gold tiara with a red center. Red knee-high boots give the classic shape, but red sneakers are the smart choice if you'll be walking. Brush the hair into big shiny waves. Defined brows, black liner, warm blush and red lips work well. I make the lasso from soft gold cord coiled and tied in two places, so it hangs neatly from the belt.
13. Lara Croft Adventure Costume

Lara Croft is built from athletic and outdoor basics. Wear a fitted teal or gray tank, high-waisted black cargo shorts, a brown utility belt, fingerless gloves and lace-up combat boots, with black leggings under the shorts when it's cold. A long, tight braid keeps hair out of the face; I finish it with a clear elastic and a drop of hairspray at the ends so it doesn't fray. Keep the face natural with bronzed cheeks and brushed brows. Skip weapons entirely and carry a rolled map, a compass or a small flashlight, with a neat fabric wrap at one wrist.
14. Hermione Granger School Costume

Hermione works for adults, teens and children alike. A gray V-neck sweater goes over a white collared shirt and striped tie, with a black pleated skirt or trousers and a long black robe. Gray knee socks and sturdy black shoes finish the uniform. Her hair should be full; sleep in loose braids the night before, then shake them out in the morning without brushing. Light blush, mascara and tinted balm keep it young. Swap the wand for a stack of thick books, a quill or a small labeled potion bottle, and add a striped scarf for warmth.
15. Princess Leia White Gown Costume

Princess Leia's white gown is comfortable, and the side buns do all the work. Choose a long white dress with a high neck, loose sleeves and a light belt at the waist, with white leggings underneath for warmth and white ankle boots or flats. For the buns, split the hair into two ponytails just above the ears, twist each one and coil it flat with plenty of pins. A hair donut under each coil helps if your hair is fine. Clean makeup with brown liner and a muted pink lip suits her. Carry a small silver clutch or a prop tablet, not a blaster.
16. Padmé Amidala Travel Costume

Padmé's travel outfit is a less common pick from the same films. A fitted burgundy or deep purple top with a matching floor-length skirt goes under a structured gray cape or cropped jacket, fastened with a decorative silver brooch. Flat gray boots hide under the hem. The hair is a smooth low bun with braids wrapped around the base. I braid two small sections at the front before making the bun, then wrap them around it, which is easier than braiding the bun itself. Neutral shadow, precise liner, peach blush and a rose lip, plus a painted cardboard communicator, keep it regal.
17. Moana Island Explorer Costume

Moana can be done respectfully as a character costume, using her colors and shapes rather than treating a culture as decoration. A red patterned bandeau-style top over a fitted neutral tank, a cream tiered midi skirt, a wide woven sash and flat brown sandals make the outfit. Let long brown hair stay loose and full, because her volume is part of the look; a sea-salt spray scrunched in helps. Glowing skin, bronzed cheeks, brushed brows and a coral lip suit her. Add a blue stone-look pendant and a light foam paddle or a shell-shaped bag.
18. Mirabel Madrigal Costume With Embroidered Skirt

Mirabel is a joy to make by hand. Decorate a white puff-sleeve blouse with colored floral or butterfly appliqués, then pair it with a long turquoise skirt painted or stitched near the hem. I'd use iron-on appliqués with a few hand stitches, because the glue lets go after a few washes. Purple espadrilles or low sandals and a bright crossbody bag go on next. Short defined curls are her hair, or pin longer curls into a faux bob. Round green glasses and green drop earrings are essential, and freckles with rosy cheeks finish the face. Carry a paper butterfly or a battery candle.
19. Mavis Vampire Costume With Striped Tights

Mavis is a vampire for people who'd rather be cute than scary. Start with a short-sleeve black skater dress with a high neck, then add black-and-red striped tights and red canvas sneakers. Her straight chin-length bob with side-swept bangs is easy to fake by pinning long hair under. Pale but natural skin, thick black liner, soft gray shadow and a deep berry lip suit her. Fangs are optional; if you wear them, try them at home first and make sure you can still talk clearly. A tiny black suitcase or a bat purse is the prop, and a black cardigan keeps you warm.
20. Edna Mode Black Bob Costume

Edna Mode is funny, fashionable and simple. Wear a structured black tunic or short dress over opaque tights, then add one architectural detail such as a flared collar or rounded shoulders, with black platform loafers or chunky boots. A sleek jaw-length bob with blunt bangs is the hair. Oversized round black glasses are the one thing you can't skip, so I'd find those first. Matte skin, sharp brows, graphic liner and a neutral lip keep the face strict. A tape measure, sketchbook and fabric swatches fit the designer, and staying all in black keeps attention on the bob and the glasses.
21. Tina Belcher Costume With Blue Skirt

Tina Belcher is a fine last-minute costume if you own basics. Tuck a pale blue crewneck tee into a navy knee-length skirt, then add white crew socks with two thin stripes and black canvas sneakers. A straight shoulder-length bob with a neat side part and thick black square glasses make her readable at a distance. Keep makeup to tinted moisturizer, mascara and balm. I'd draw the sock stripes with a fabric marker if you can't find the right pair; it takes five minutes. A notebook of creative writing or a small diner tray is the prop, and it works for any age and body type.
22. Daria Morgendorffer Costume With Green Jacket

Daria is dry and understated, and nearly every piece goes back into your wardrobe afterwards. Layer an olive-green zip jacket over an orange or rust tee, then add a black pleated skirt, opaque black tights and chunky lace-up boots. Her bob is shoulder length with a center part and ends that curve in, which a round brush and a blow dryer handle. Oversized round glasses are the defining accessory. Matte skin, groomed brows, brown mascara and a neutral lip are all she needs. Carry a paperback or a school newspaper, and wear a thin thermal under the tee on a cold night.
23. Sailor Mars Costume With Red Skirt

Sailor Mars suits long dark hair worn sleek and straight with a center part. Start with a white fitted bodysuit or tucked white top and a red pleated skirt, then add a purple sailor collar, a red front bow, a purple back bow and a simple gold tiara. White elbow gloves and red low pumps complete the color scheme. I stiffen the bows with iron-on interfacing so they stand out instead of drooping. Sharp black liner, lavender shadow, pink blush and a red-tinted lip suit her. Paper charm cards with abstract symbols are the prop, and red ballet flats are fine if heels aren't practical.
24. Vanessa Sea Witch Disguise Costume

Vanessa's disguise is purple and black glamour. A fitted black or dark purple maxi with a structured bodice goes with a wide purple sash and low heels or flats. Wear long hair with a sleek side part, straight or with soft waves at the ends. Violet shadow, a wing, sculpted brows and a deep rose lip set the villain tone. The gold shell pendant at the neck and a small hand mirror are what make her Vanessa. Avoid ritual-style extras and keep it about the fashion. Most people already own a formal dress that will work here.
25. Megara Purple Grecian Costume

Megara's draped purple dress is easy to wear. Choose a lilac or violet maxi with a fitted waist and an asymmetric neckline, then add a darker purple sash, gold spiral brooches at the shoulders and flat gold sandals. Her hair is a high, full ponytail curled into one thick wave, with a single curl loose at the forehead. I tease the base of the ponytail and wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to hide it. Plum shadow, long black liner, warm blush and a berry lip suit her. A scroll or a small gold clutch is plenty, and a purple cape helps on a cold night.
26. Morticia Addams Black Gown Costume

Morticia depends on a long silhouette, not on gore. Wear a floor-length black gown with fitted sleeves, a defined waist and a softly flared hem; lace panels or trailing cuffs add movement. Pointed flats or low heels hidden under the skirt are kinder than tall heels with a long hem. Hair is long, center-parted and very sleek, and a smoothing serum on the lengths gives the glassy finish. Pale foundation used lightly, arched brows, smoky gray eyes and deep red lips form the face. Carry a single artificial red rose or a vintage fan, and add long red nails and a statement ring.
27. Lydia Deetz Red Dress Costume

Lydia's red wedding dress is theatrical and full of volume. Choose a red midi or maxi with sheer sleeves, layered tulle and ruffles, add a short red veil on a headband and finish with red tights and Mary Janes or low boots. The hair is a messy half-up with spiky volume at the crown and separated bangs; I use a matte paste on dry hair to get the spikes to hold. Pale matte skin, charcoal liner, gray shadow and a muted red lip complete it. A vintage camera or a red fabric bouquet is the prop, and a red lace blouse with a tulle skirt is a good cheaper route.
28. Jennifer Check Cheerleader Costume

Jennifer Check's cheer uniform reads as the character without any horror makeup. Wear a red-and-white cheer top and a matching pleated skirt with shorts underneath, plus white crew socks and clean white sneakers. Smooth, bouncy side-parted waves with plenty of shine carry the look. Black liner, rosy blush, highlight and berry gloss keep it polished. Matching pom-poms or a school pennant is the prop, and a red varsity jacket helps outdoors. I'd leave out the stains and wounds entirely, which keeps the costume suitable for public and family events.
29. Priscilla Presley 1960s Costume

Priscilla Presley's 1960s look is all about the bouffant. A pastel long-sleeve mini with a high neck and light beading or lace goes with sheer tights and low white or silver block heels. For the hair, tease the crown in sections at the root, smooth the top layer over it and set a wide velvet headband behind the front. I spray each teased section lightly as I go, which holds better than one heavy coat at the end. Bold winged liner, lashes, soft contour and pale pink lips are the period face. Pearl-look earrings and a small structured bag finish it, and a knee-length shift works if you want more coverage.
30. Olivia Rodrigo Purple Pop Star Costume

An Olivia Rodrigo-inspired stage look needs sparkle and some purple. A purple sequin mini, or a metallic purple top with a skater skirt, goes with sheer tights and black combat boots or silver platform sneakers. Loose glossy waves with a center part suit her. Winged liner, lavender shimmer, pink blush and berry gloss make the face, and small face-safe star stickers on the cheeks add fun, kept well away from the eyes. A purple microphone or a handful of homemade concert passes is the prop. I'd throw a black faux-leather jacket over the top, which also cuts the sequin scratch on your arms.
31. Ruth Bader Ginsburg Costume With Lace Collar

A Ruth Bader Ginsburg costume is smart and respectful. Wear a long black robe or loose black long-sleeve midi with a white lace collar at the neck, plus black tights and sensible loafers. Pull the hair into a smooth low bun at the nape. Minimal makeup with defined brows, pink blush and a muted rose lip suits her. Large square glasses and small studs are the finishing details. I'd pin the collar at three points so it doesn't slide to one side. Carry a pocket constitution or a light foam gavel, and keep the focus on her work, not on making her a joke.
32. Amelia Earhart Aviator Costume

Amelia Earhart's aviator outfit is ideal for cool weather. Wear tan high-waisted trousers, a white button-down and a brown faux-leather bomber, then add a narrow neck scarf, brown lace-up boots and a vintage-style aviator cap. Tuck the hair into the cap or set short finger waves at the face. Bronzed cheeks, lashes and a classic red lip suit the era. Goggles go on the cap rather than over the eyes. A world map, a travel journal or a cardboard plane is the prop, with a crossbody satchel. Most of these pieces turn up in any thrift shop.
33. Rosie The Riveter Costume

Rosie the Riveter is a strong last-minute choice. Wear a denim or navy button-down with the sleeves rolled above the elbow, high-waisted dark jeans or work pants and sturdy brown boots. Put the hair in a bun, then wrap a red polka-dot scarf around the head and knot it at the top; I fold the scarf into a long band first so the knot sits high and neat. Brows, mascara, warm blush and bright red lipstick are the face. A metal-look lunch box or a rolled poster is the prop. Leave real tools at home, since they're heavy and some events don't allow them, and practice the flex pose.
34. Carmen Sandiego Red Coat Costume

Carmen Sandiego is one red coat and a hat. Wear a fitted red trench over a black turtleneck and black trousers or a knee-length skirt, with opaque tights if needed and comfortable black ankle boots. Smooth shoulder-length waves show under a wide-brim red hat. I'd test the hat in a breeze, since wide brims catch the wind outdoors; a hat elastic under the hair solves it. Sharp liner, warm blush and red lipstick suit her. Black gloves and a world map or passport-style notebook are the props. Keep the coat belted so the red shape stays strong, and you're dressed for any fall weather.
35. Brunette Witch Costume With Purple Cape

A brunette witch can be playful rather than frightening. Wear a long black ruffled dress with a defined waist and a full skirt, a purple velvet-look cape and striped tights below the hem. Black buckled ankle boots keep you steady. Loose textured waves should show under a wide-brim pointed hat. Purple shadow, a wing, rosy blush and plum lipstick fit the colors. A small broom or a book labeled Autumn Recipes is a harmless prop, with a moon necklace and purple ribbon round the hat. A cheap witch hat gets floppy, so I tuck a cardstock cone inside the crown to stiffen it.
36. Glam Brunette Vampire Costume

For a polished vampire, go for rich fabrics and good makeup. A long burgundy dress with black lace sleeves, or a fitted black top with a red maxi, goes under a black cape lined in red, with black ankle boots or low velvet heels. Big brushed-out waves with a center part are dramatic. Smoky eyes, softly sculpted cheeks and a dark berry lip finish the face; I set the lipstick with a tissue and a little powder so it survives drinks. Fangs are optional, a hand mirror or red satin fan is the prop, and a jeweled choker and black nails add detail. Keep the skin natural, not stark white.
37. Brunette Black Cat Costume

A black cat is the fastest costume here. Wear a fitted black turtleneck with leggings, a skater skirt or wide trousers, then pin a soft tail into the waistband and add flats or ankle boots. A high ponytail, loose waves or two small space buns under a cat-ear headband all work. Draw a small nose, whiskers and an extended cat-eye with liner, then add rosy cheeks and pink gloss. I draw whiskers with a gel liner rather than a pencil, because pencil smudges as soon as you touch your face. A paw-shaped bag or a yarn-ball prop and soft paw gloves add warmth and character.
38. Brunette Greek Goddess Costume

A Greek goddess starts with a simple maxi. Choose a white or ivory one-shoulder gown, wrap a gold braided belt at the waist, add a light draped shawl and flat gold sandals. Pin the hair in a loose low updo with curls around the face. Set a gold leaf headband around the crown rather than across the forehead; it stays put far better there. Champagne shadow, bronzed cheeks, highlight and a soft rose lip suit the look. Carry a gold goblet with water in it or a small scroll. On a cold night, nude leggings and a fitted long-sleeve top go under the dress without showing.
39. Brunette 1970s Disco Costume

Disco brings shine and movement. Wear a metallic halter or a sparkly long-sleeve blouse with high-waisted flares, or a single jumpsuit that does the same job with less effort. Comfortable platforms, oversized hoops and a small glittering bag finish the clothes. Feathered waves with volume at the crown and flipped ends are the hair; a large round brush and hot rollers get you there. Blue or gold shimmer, big lashes, peach blush and gloss suit the era. I'd pick stretch fabrics, since you'll want to sit and dance. A light mirrored ball or a dance-club ticket is the prop.
40. Brunette 1990s Grunge Costume

Nineties grunge is for anyone who wants relaxed layers and shoes they can walk in. Wear a plain or graphic tee with no band logo under an oversized plaid flannel, with distressed straight jeans, or a black slip dress over a fitted white tee. Ribbed crew socks, worn-in combat boots and a black choker set the decade. Leave the hair loose with messy waves and a center part. Smudged brown liner, matte skin and a brick lip are the makeup. A portable cassette player or a patched backpack is the prop. Grunge is meant to look careless, so I keep the colors in one muted family, which makes it look like a costume in photos.
A Faux Bob From Long Hair, Without Cutting
Six of these characters wear a bob, and none of them is worth a haircut. I fake it like this, and it takes about twenty minutes.
- Straighten or curl the hair first, depending on the character. Curls hide the pins better, so Betty Boop and Mirabel are the easiest.
- Gather the lengths into a low ponytail at the nape, then braid it or twist it tightly.
- Fold the braid up and flat against the back of the head and pin it there with crossed bobby pins.
- Bring the top layer of hair down over the pinned braid and tuck the ends under at jaw level. Pin underneath, out of sight.
- Finish with a firm-hold spray, and add the headband or bangs last.
Very thick or waist-length hair can look bulky at the back this way. If that happens, a short dark wig is the more comfortable route for one night.
Green Skin Without a Green Collar
Elphaba and any pale, painted look carry the most risk of ruined clothes. Patch-test the paint on the inside of your wrist a day early. Apply it in thin layers with a damp sponge, then press translucent setting powder over every painted area and finish with a setting spray. Put the costume on after the makeup has set, not before, and wear a scarf around the neck while you dress.
At the end of the night, take it off with an oil cleanser or balm before washing with soap, and use a dark towel. Hairline paint is the hardest to shift, so I'd keep it light there and let the hat brim cover the edge.
Let Your Own Brown Hair Do the Work
Every costume above treats brown or dark hair as part of the character rather than something to cover with a wig. Some lean on glossy waves or braids, others on a sleek bun or a sharp bob, and classic looks such as the witch or the cat simply show off your natural shade. Start with your hair length, then match it to the event, the weather and what you'd like to spend. After that, build the outfit from head to toe with the right colors, shoes you can stand in and one easy prop. Thrifted and closet pieces work as well as a packaged costume, and they usually fit better.
