If you have brown or near-black hair, you already own the hardest part of a lot of famous costumes. Dark hair is the signature of characters from Morticia to Princess Leia, and wearing your own hair instead of a wig is cooler, more comfortable and far more convincing in photos. In my styling work, the hair usually decides which character a client should go as, and the clothes follow. Below are thirty-five dark-haired characters from film, television, cartoons and music, each with the clothes, the hairstyle, the makeup and the one prop that tells people who you are. I've noted where your own length works and where a wig or a pinned faux bob makes more sense.

Working With the Brown Hair You Already Have
Before picking a character, I look at the client's length, texture and shade, because those decide how much work the hair will be. A character with your natural length is a weeknight costume. One with a different cut needs a plan.
Long hair playing a bob
Mia Wallace, Velma, Snow White, Mavis and Edna all wear short bobs. For a softer bob like Snow White's, curl the lengths under, roll them up to the jaw and pin flat at the nape. For a blunt, glossy bob with a heavy fringe, a wig is honestly easier; braid your own hair flat against the head, put on a wig cap and secure the wig with a few pins behind the ears.
Light brown playing near-black
Morticia, Cher and Shego look best with very dark hair. Temporary colour sprays will deepen light brown for a night, but they can transfer onto pale collars and pillowcases. Spray in a well-ventilated room before you dress, let it dry fully, and wash it out the same night. If you're blonde, a wig is the cleaner choice.
Making a style last until midnight
Straight styles fall flat in damp air and curls drop by the second hour. I set curls while they're still warm, either pinned up in loops or rolled in velcro rollers, and let them cool before brushing out. For braids and buns, hairspray the finished shape and carry a few spare pins in your bag.
1. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Dress

Wednesday is the first character I suggest for long, dark hair, because the braids are the costume. Part the hair dead centre with the tail of a comb, then plait two tight braids from just behind the ears; smoothing a little gel along the parting keeps it sharp all night. A knee-length black dress with a white collar and cuffs, or a white shirt layered underneath to supply them. Opaque black tights and loafers. Pale skin, flat brows and a muted berry lip. A small old book or a faux hand prop, and a straight, unsmiling posture.
2. Morticia Addams Costume With Long Black Gown

Morticia asks for a long black gown that pools a little at the hem and flares at the sleeve, so look for lace panels or a mermaid-shaped skirt. The hair must be pin-straight with an exact centre part. If your brown is light, a temporary black colour spray will deepen it for the night, though it can rub onto a pale collar, so I spray before dressing and let it dry fully. Pale makeup, thin arched brows, smoky eyes and a red lip. Pointed flats or low heels, and carry a single long rose stem with the bloom cut off, which is her joke.
3. Mia Wallace Costume With White Shirt

Mia Wallace lives on the bob. If your hair is chin length already, flat-iron it sleek and trim or pin a blunt fringe; anything longer needs a black-brown bob wig with heavy bangs, because tucking long hair under never gives that clean line. Then an oversized white shirt tucked into cropped black trousers, collar loose. Black ballet flats or low pumps for dancing. Even skin, lined eyes and a deep red lip. Carry a retro microphone or a small dance trophy. It's mostly closet basics, so the money goes on the wig if it goes anywhere.
4. Holly Golightly Costume With Black Dress

Holly Golightly's opening look is a long, sleeveless black column dress with long black gloves, and the gloves need to reach above the elbow or the line looks off. A high, full updo with a sparkly piece at the front gives her height; I tease the crown before pinning so it holds its shape. Layers of faux pearls, big black sunglasses and a small structured bag. Winged liner, groomed brows, peach blush and a soft pink lip. Kitten heels or pointed flats, and a takeaway coffee cup with a pastry bag as the nod to that first scene.
5. Velma Dinkley Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma is warm, cosy and ready in an hour. An oversized orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red loafers or Mary Janes. Her hair is a chin-length bob with full bangs, so a wig is easier for long hair, or you can roll your own hair under and pin it at the nape for a faux bob. Square black glasses are what people read first, so don't skip them; clear-lens frames are cheap and easy to find. Fresh makeup, rosy cheeks and a magnifying glass or a mystery paperback.
6. Belle Costume With Yellow Ball Gown

Belle's ball gown is the most work in the yellow family, and you can scale it down. A long yellow or gold off-shoulder gown with a fitted bodice and layered skirt is the full version; a yellow midi with matching elbow gloves reads almost as well and lets you sit. Brown hair half up with soft curls, a gold ribbon tied at the back and one loose strand framing the face. Brown liner, warm blush and a rose lip. Yellow ballet flats. The rose under a clear dome is the prop people recognise; a small storybook also works.
7. Wonder Woman Costume With Red And Blue Outfit

Wonder Woman can be done with full coverage and still look strong. A fitted red top, a blue star-print skirt or shorts, tall red boots, wide gold wrist cuffs and a gold belt. Leggings, flats or a longer skirt all work if you want more cover; the colours and cuffs carry the character. Long, loose hair brushed into big waves. Luminous skin, strong brows, a little bronze on the lids and a red lip. The gold star tiara is the finishing piece. A red cape adds drama but tangles in crowds, so I'd leave it at home for a busy party.
8. Lara Croft Costume With Cargo Shorts

Lara Croft is outdoor basics and one long braid. A fitted dark green or grey tank with brown cargo shorts, a utility belt with small pouches and rugged lace-up boots. On a cold night, black leggings underneath. Braid long hair into a single thick plait or a low ponytail with a few loose strands at the face; a thin braid looks wrong, so if yours is fine, pancake the braid by pulling each section gently outward. Bronzed skin and smudged liner. A map, compass or flashlight, fingerless gloves and a canvas backpack.
9. Hermione Granger Costume With School Robe

Hermione suits naturally wavy or curly brown hair best, and she's the one character where frizz helps. Brush curls out lightly instead of defining them. A white shirt, grey V-neck sweater, pleated skirt, striped tie and long black robe, with dark knee socks and loafers. Natural makeup with flushed cheeks and tinted balm. A thick old book and a satchel full of paper "spells". A feather quill is a gentler prop than a wand if there are small kids around. With all those layers, it's a warm costume for outdoor plans.
10. Princess Leia Costume With White Gown

Princess Leia's white gown is simple; the two side buns are where the time goes. Divide the hair in a centre part, make a low ponytail over each ear, and coil each one flat against the head, pinning as you go. Shorter or finer hair needs a pair of bun pieces, and I'd use a doughnut-shaped bun former inside each to get the size. A long-sleeved, high-necked white maxi with a wide silver belt and white boots or flats. Matte skin, sculpted brows, brown liner and a muted rose lip. A small futuristic card as a harmless prop.
11. Padmé Amidala Costume With White Cape

Padmé's white arena look is a fitted white long-sleeve top, slim white trousers and a flowing cream or white cape over the shoulders, with a silver belt and white knee boots. A sleek low bun or a braided updo. Warm neutral eyes and a soft lip. Carry a small metallic device or a silver clutch instead of a weapon. White trousers show every mark, so I'd choose a thicker fabric that won't show underwear lines. The cape adds warmth on a cool night, which makes this a good outdoor pick.
12. Katniss Everdeen Costume With Black Jacket

Katniss is the brunette pick for anyone who wants trousers and sturdy boots. A fitted black T-shirt, dark cargo trousers, a light black utility jacket and lace-up boots. The side braid matters: start it high behind one ear and bring it over the shoulder, leaving the texture a little rough. Matte skin, smudged liner and natural lips. The gold bird pin is the single detail that identifies her, so place it high on the jacket where it shows. A canvas backpack or coiled rope, and thermal leggings underneath when it's cold.
13. Snow White Costume With Blue Bodice

Snow White is a short bob and four colours: a blue fitted bodice or puff-sleeve top, a full yellow midi skirt, a short red cape and red flats. For long hair, the faux bob is the trick; curl the ends under, roll them up to the jaw and pin at the nape, then cover the pins with the red bow headband. Rosy blush, softly defined eyes and a vivid red lip. A small basket of faux apples and greenery. Nude or yellow tights under the skirt on a cool night. Nothing here needs an expensive gown.
14. Dorothy Gale Costume With Blue Gingham Dress

Dorothy is one of the gentlest costumes for any setting. A blue-and-white gingham pinafore over a white blouse with puffed short sleeves, white ankle socks and sparkly red flats. Low, secure flats are kinder than red heels if you're on your feet. Centre part, two braids and pale blue ribbons tied at the ends. Pink blush, curled lashes and a rosy lip. A small picnic basket with a plush dog peeking out. When it's chilly, a white cardigan goes under the pinafore so the gingham still shows.
15. Mary Poppins Costume With Blue Coat

Mary Poppins is the costume I recommend for a cold October evening, because the coat is the costume. A navy or royal blue midi coat over a white high-neck blouse and a dark A-line skirt, with black tights, buttoned ankle boots and a red bow tie at the collar. A neat low bun under a small black hat trimmed with faux daisies and berries; pin the hat through the bun so it sits forward. Pink cheeks and a red lip. A closed black umbrella and a carpet-style bag. Thrifted outerwear works well, and you'll wear the coat again.
16. Betty Boop Costume With Red Dress

Betty Boop is mostly in the face and the curls. A knee-length red sheath or fit-and-flare dress with a modest sweetheart neck, sheer black tights, a gold bangle, hoops and low black heels. Short dark hair set into glossy pin curls or finger waves, or a cropped curly wig with a bit of shine. Draw rounded brows, emphasise the upper lashes, add rosy cheeks and paint a small red heart-shaped lip, starting the shape inside your natural line. A tiny red clutch or a standing retro microphone for photos. Keep the dress playful rather than revealing.
17. Veronica Lodge Costume With Plaid Skirt

Veronica Lodge is preppy with money. A fitted jewel-tone sweater, a plaid skirt, black tights and heeled ankle boots, with a pearl collar necklace or a structured blazer. Glossy sculpted waves with a deep side part; I set the waves with a large barrel and brush them out, then pin the deep side back behind one ear. Shaped brows, a soft smoky eye and a berry lip. A structured handbag and a paper milkshake cup from a diner. An initial pin helps the reference. Every piece is wearable afterwards.
18. Blair Waldorf Costume With Headband

For Blair Waldorf, the headband is the costume. A wide satin headband in red, navy or emerald, matched to a fitted cardigan, over a white collared blouse, a plaid skirt, opaque tights and ballet flats. Push the headband back a finger width from the hairline so it doesn't slide forward, and curl the lengths underneath. A tailored coat outside. Luminous skin, pink blush and a rosy lip. A structured bag or a box of colourful macarons as the prop. It's a safe, recognisable choice for an office or school celebration.
19. Rachel Green Costume With Plaid Skirt

Rachel Green's early coffeehouse look is a black turtleneck, a high-waisted plaid skirt, sheer tights and knee-high black boots, with a long neutral coat. The haircut is what people remember, so a layered shoulder-length blowout with lots of bounce matters more than the outfit; a round brush and big velcro rollers will get you most of the way. Brown liner, peach blush and a beige-pink lip. A serving tray, a plain mug or an order pad to explain it. Small hoops and a watch. You can wear every piece again.
20. Monica Geller Costume With Red Tank Top

Monica Geller is the most low-key 1990s option here. A fitted red tank or cropped tee, high-rise straight jeans and clean white sneakers, plus a black apron to hint at her cooking. Shoulder-length blowout with a centre or soft side part. Groomed brows, peach blush and a rosy-brown lip. A labelled recipe binder, an oven mitt or a spotless cleaning caddy is the joke. Silver hoops and a slim watch. In a group, her red top and the tidy props keep her distinct from friends dressed as the others.
21. Fran Fine Costume With Animal Print Outfit

Fran Fine is the costume for someone who wants big hair and bold prints. A fitted animal-print turtleneck or jacket with a black mini skirt, opaque tights and heeled ankle boots, or a bright red blazer for a colour-blocked version. The volume has to come from the roots: tease the crown in small sections, smooth the top layer over it and spray, then curl the ends. Black liner, full lashes, pink blush and a glossy red lip. Oversized gold earrings and a small structured bag. Block heels keep the outfit wearable for a long evening.
22. Jackie Burkhart Costume With Flared Jeans

Jackie Burkhart dresses straight out of the 1970s: a fitted striped knit top, high-rise flared jeans and brown platforms, with a cropped faux-fur jacket or a bright cardigan. Long, smooth hair with a centre part and the ends flipped outward with a large round brush; a flat iron flipped out at the ends works too. Thin liner, peach blush, soft brown shadow and a shiny nude lip. A small shoulder bag or a vintage magazine, gold hoops and a pendant. Most of this is thrift-store territory. Keep the platforms low enough to walk in.
23. Rory Gilmore Costume With School Uniform

Rory Gilmore's school uniform is neat and modest, so it's an easy pick for work or school. A pale blue shirt under a navy sweater vest, a plaid knee-length skirt and a fitted navy blazer, with knee socks, brown loafers and a backpack. Straight, smooth hair with a centre part or a soft bend at the ends. Minimal makeup, mascara and tinted balm. Two or three paperbacks and a takeaway coffee cup are the props that make it her; a folded newspaper adds a second clue. Layers keep you warm outside.
24. Mia Thermopolis Costume With School Blazer

Mia Thermopolis before the makeover is a fun one to play awkward. A white shirt, navy blazer, plaid skirt, knee socks and black loafers, with thick rectangular glasses. Curly or thick brown hair pulled half up and left frizzy on purpose; brushing dry curls is the quickest way to get her look. Lightly filled brows, a little blush and neutral lips. A school backpack, a notebook labelled with princess lessons and a small silver tiara pushed in a bit crooked. Headphones round the neck add a teenage detail.
25. Jenna Rink Costume With Colorful Mini Dress

Jenna Rink's party dress is a bold, early-2000s colour block in green, blue, purple and red. A fitted mini or knee-length dress in those panels, a butterfly necklace, a small bright bag and metallic low heels. If you can't find the pattern, layer a turquoise dress over a purple camisole and add a wide green belt; the colour blocking still reads. Half-up hair with curled ends and two face-framing pieces. Shimmery pastel lids, glossy pink lips and rosy blush. A fashion magazine or a bag of colourful sweets as the prop.
26. Selena Quintanilla Costume With Purple Jumpsuit

Selena's purple stage look is a long-sleeve purple jumpsuit with flared legs, made to sparkle with rhinestone trim along the neckline, cuffs and waist. I'd sew the trim on with a few tacks rather than relying on fabric tape, because stretch jumpsuits pull tape loose when you move. Purple or silver platform boots with a stable heel. Long, brushed-out waves with lifted roots. Defined eyes, warm blush and a bold red lip. Sparkly drop earrings and a retro microphone. Stretch fabric is your friend if you'll dance and sit.
27. Cher Costume With Black Sequin Outfit

A 1970s Cher is long, straight dark hair and sparkle. A black sequin jumpsuit, or a sparkly long-sleeve top with high-waisted black flares, platform boots, big hoops and a narrow jewelled headband across the forehead. Hair flat-ironed pin straight with a sharp centre part; clip-in extensions help if yours stops at the shoulder. Smoky brown shadow, winged liner and a glossy nude lip. A silver microphone or a fringed shawl over one arm. Sequins scratch the inside of the arm, so pick a lined top or wear a thin layer underneath.
28. Alex Russo Costume With Layered Vest

Alex Russo's layers look thrown together, and that's harder than it sounds. A printed long-sleeve top, a fitted vest, dark skinny jeans and slouchy ankle boots, with a stack of necklaces and mismatched bracelets. I keep it to one patterned piece and put the rest in jewel tones so it doesn't turn into noise. Long, loose, softly curled hair with a relaxed side part. Black liner, a little shimmer and pink gloss. A decorated notebook as a spell book, or a star-covered shoulder bag.
29. Mavis Costume With Black Mini Dress

Mavis is a friendly vampire and an easy one for walking. A simple black long-sleeve mini dress, black-and-red striped tights and bright red sneakers, plus a short black cape with a small stand-up collar if you want more Halloween. A sleek chin-length bob with straight bangs, which means a wig for most long hair. Apply the pale base lightly and set it, then add lavender shadow, defined lashes and a berry lip. Small fangs come out for eating. A bat-shaped purse or plush bat. Stretchy dress, flat shoes, hours of comfort.
30. Sailor Mars Costume With Red Skirt

Sailor Mars needs long, straight, dark hair, so it's perfect if you have it. A white sailor-collar top with a purple bow, a pleated red skirt and white gloves, plus red flats, low heels or ankle boots. Hair straight and long with a clean centre part; a few drops of smoothing serum on the ends tames flyaways. A gold tiara with a red centre and small red earrings. Smooth skin, sharp liner, pink blush and a red-tinted lip. Paper charms or a small star bag. Crisp separates make it easy to move in.
31. Carmen Sandiego Costume With Red Trench Coat

Carmen Sandiego is a red trench coat and a red fedora, and that silhouette carries from across a room. Belt the trench over a fitted black top and slim black trousers, with black gloves and ankle boots. Soft curls under the hat, with some of the hair showing at the sides. Defined brows, winged liner and a red lip. A folded world map, a passport-style notebook or a small vintage case. If the party is indoors and warm, a sleeveless red vest or a lightweight trench keeps you from cooking under the coat.
32. Edna Mode Costume With Black Tunic

Edna Mode is boxy, tiny-gestured and very comfortable. An oversized black tunic or a structured mini dress, opaque black tights and chunky black loafers, with a wide red or orange geometric necklace. The jaw-length bob with a perfectly straight fringe is essential; a glossy wig is easiest for long hair. Big round black glasses over matte skin, defined brows and a red lip. A measuring tape around the neck, fabric swatches or a sketchbook. Keep the shape architectural, not fitted. It suits a teacher, an office or a superhero group theme.
33. Shego Costume With Green And Black Jumpsuit

Shego is graphic colour blocking in lime green and black. A full-length jumpsuit or a long-sleeve top and leggings with contrasting green panels, black gloves and low black ankle boots. If you can't find the print, stitch removable green fabric panels onto black athletic wear, following the side seams so they move with you. Long, straight hair parted to one side. A pale base, dark arched brows, smoky green shadow and sharp liner. A small green utility pouch, with no combat props needed.
34. Bella Swan Costume With Brown Jacket

Bella Swan is the quietest costume here, which suits a last-minute ask. A charcoal long-sleeve shirt under a brown utility jacket, dark straight jeans and grey sneakers or hiking boots. Long, loose hair with natural waves and a slightly off-centre part. Very light makeup with cool pink blush and tinted balm. A worn paperback, a canvas backpack or a travel mug. Because it's so plain, I'd add a homemade school ID card so people at a party get it. Warm enough for outdoor plans.
35. Jennifer Check Costume With Pink Jacket

For Jennifer Check, I use her colourful school wardrobe rather than anything gory. A cropped pink heart-print jacket or cardigan over a fitted pastel tank, a denim skirt, opaque tights and pink sneakers or ankle boots. Glossy, full waves with a deep side part. Smoky liner, full lashes, pink blush and a shiny berry gloss. Hoops, a heart necklace and a small school bag. A plain pom-pom or a yearbook as the prop. The bright pink and the big hair tell the story while keeping it fine for a public party.
Toning a Character Down for Work or School
Many offices and schools allow costumes but ask for no masks, no weapon props and nothing too revealing. Several of these characters already fit, and the rest adapt with a couple of swaps.
- Already office-ready: Rory Gilmore, Blair Waldorf, Velma, Mary Poppins, Monica Geller and Edna Mode use ordinary clothes. Their props, such as books, a coffee cup, an umbrella or a measuring tape, are harmless.
- Swap the prop: Lara Croft gets a map and compass, Katniss gets her bird pin and a backpack, and Padmé gets a silver clutch. That way none of them needs a weapon.
- Add coverage: Wonder Woman works with leggings and a longer skirt, Betty Boop with a higher neckline and opaque tights, and Fran Fine with a knee-length skirt instead of a mini.
- Keep makeup wearable: Shego's pale base and Mavis's fangs can stay at home for a desk day. The hair, colours and clothes still tell people who you are.
If you'll sit for hours, skip the cape, gloves and platforms, and pick the character whose silhouette survives a desk chair. A trench coat, a headband or a pair of square glasses does more for recognition at work than a full gown.
Your Haircut Is Half the Costume
Every character in this list leans on dark hair, so start with the head and work down. If your length and texture already match, like Wednesday's braids, Cher's straight lengths or Hermione's curls, you're most of the way there. If they don't, a pinned faux bob or a good wig is a better use of money than a fancy dress. Then add the clothes, one clear prop and shoes you can walk in. Most of these come from a closet and a thrift shop, and nearly every piece goes back into your wardrobe afterwards.
