Most costume roundups quietly assume you'll straighten, dye or hide your hair to play a character. I don't style that way. Every look below starts from the hair you already wear, whether that's braids, locs, a twist-out, a close crop or a wig you love, and then builds the clothes, makeup, props and shoes around it. You'll find superheroes, music icons, cartoon favourites, decade looks and a handful of quick closet builds. I've noted where coverage, budget or a long night on your feet changes what I'd pick, because a costume you keep adjusting is a costume you stop enjoying by ten o'clock.

Matching a Character Without Taking Down Your Braids
Nearly every character on this list can be played with the protective style you're wearing this week. The trick is to decide what the character's hair is really doing in people's minds: is it a colour, a shape or a single detail? Storm is a colour. Garnet and Foxxy Cleopatra are shapes. Wednesday is two braids and a part. Once you know which one you're dealing with, you only have to change that one thing.
When the character is a colour
Coloured hair wax, temporary spray and clip-in strands give you a colour for one night. Wax sits on the surface of braids and locs and rinses out, though it can leave residue in locs that needs a proper clarifying wash, so I use it lightly on locs and more freely on braids. Clip-in strands are kinder still: they slide into braids, come out in seconds and leave nothing behind.
When the character is a shape
A big rounded or square silhouette is easier with a wig than with your own hair if you're short on time. A wig cap over flat cornrows or low-profile braids gives a smooth base. Bulky braids under a wig make it sit high and look like a helmet, so if you're wearing box braids, gather them into a low, flat bun first and choose a wig with an adjustable strap.
Protecting your edges for a long night
- Avoid tight elastic headbands and crowns; pad them with a strip of felt or swap for a wide fabric band.
- Pin hats and headpieces to your braids, not to your edges.
- Take the wig or headpiece off as soon as you get home and let your scalp breathe overnight.
- If a style already feels tight on Halloween morning, pick a costume that doesn't add weight to your head.
1. Storm Halloween Costume With White Cape

Storm is all about the hair, so I settle that before buying a single piece of clothing. A white curly wig gives the classic effect, but white or silver hair wax over your own curls, braids or locs reads just as clearly and comes out with one wash. The base is a fitted black jumpsuit, catsuit or long-sleeve bodysuit over opaque leggings, with a white cape, a silver belt, metallic cuffs and a small lightning-bolt piece. Cool silver shadow, a crisp wing, a strong highlight and a deep berry lip suit deeper skin. Pick knee-high boots or comfortable ankle boots, and leave weapons at home; the cape and a good pose carry her.
2. Princess Tiana Halloween Costume With Green Gown

Tiana reads from her green, so match the shade before anything else; a minty green and a sage green look like two different princesses in photos. A light green gown, fit-and-flare dress or layered tulle skirt with a corset-style top all work. If you're sewing, cut petal shapes for the waist from pale green felt or organza; organza gives a lighter edge, felt holds its shape without a hem. Put natural hair into a smooth bun, braided updo or curly high puff with a small green tiara. Gold shimmer, rosy blush and gloss keep the face soft, and a tiny frog plush or frog purse tells everyone who you are. Gold flats or low block heels finish it.
3. Ariel Halloween Costume With Blue Mermaid Dress

Halle Bailey's Ariel gave a lot of women a mermaid with locs, which is why I like this version so much. Long auburn locs or braids carry the character, and temporary colour strands add red without committing your whole head. Wear a shimmering blue-green maxi skirt with a purple fitted top, or a mermaid-shaped dress with enough room at the knee to climb stairs. Pearly eyeshadow, coral blush and glossy lips keep it fresh. Shell earrings, a starfish clip and a small seashell bag are plenty. I'd choose iridescent flats over a fin every time, and pack a light blue shawl for the walk home.
4. Shuri Halloween Costume With Purple Jumpsuit

Shuri is the costume I suggest to people who want to look clever rather than fierce. Build it on a fitted purple-and-black jumpsuit, matching athletic separates or black leggings with a structured purple top. Silver fabric tape in geometric lines gives the tech pattern cheaply; press it down hard at the ends, because tape lifts first at corners when you bend. Braided buns, cornrows, a curly tapered cut or your everyday style all suit her. Defined brows, violet liner, warm highlight and a neutral lip keep the face young. Add metallic cuffs, a beaded bracelet and a sleek crossbody that passes for equipment, plus combat boots or streamlined sneakers. Skip anything weapon-shaped.
5. Okoye Halloween Costume With Red Armor

Okoye's red-and-gold uniform looks commanding without a full suit, and that's good news, because a stiff bodysuit is miserable after two hours. Start with a fitted red jumpsuit, a long red tunic over leggings or a structured red dress, then add gold cord, metallic shoulder pieces and patterned panels at the waist. A bald cap will imitate the character, but caps wrinkle at the nape on most people and need careful blending; a close crop, wrapped head or braided bun is easier and still reads. Use sharp brows, warm bronze shadow, defined cheekbones and a deep neutral lip. Gold neck rings, stacked cuffs and sturdy boots finish it. A beaded pouch stands in for the spear.
6. Catwoman Halloween Costume With Black Catsuit

Catwoman flexes with you: glamorous, comfortable or modest, depending on the base. A black catsuit, a fitted jumpsuit or a long-sleeve top with faux-leather pants all work, finished with a wide black belt, cat ears, short gloves and a simple eye mask. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so if you dance, I'd pick a stretch jumpsuit instead. A pixie, curly bob, braids or slick high ponytail all suit her. Sharp winged liner, a soft smoked eye and a burgundy or glossy nude lip set the mood. Choose ankle boots with a stable heel over stilettos, leave the whip at home, and carry a small cat-shaped purse with a little silver jewellery.
7. Lieutenant Uhura Halloween Costume With Red Uniform

Uhura is one of the easiest characters on this list to assemble. A red long-sleeve mini dress or tunic with black tights or slim black pants is the whole base. Add a small metallic badge on the chest and gold trim at the neckline and cuffs; iron-on trim stays flatter than glued braid, which tends to ripple. Hair can be a smooth bob, a rounded Afro, a braided updo or a polished ponytail. Clean liner, warm blush, fluttery lashes and a red or berry lip feel right for the era. A painted compact makes a good communicator. Knee-high black boots finish it, and a longer red shift over opaque leggings gives more coverage.
8. Domino Halloween Costume With Black Utility Suit

Domino lives or dies on the eye patch. Use a white cream face paint around one eye in her signature shape, and expect white to look ashy or streaky on deeper skin unless you build it in thin layers and set each one with powder. The rest of the face stays warm and lightly sculpted with black liner and a muted berry lip. Underneath, wear a black utility jumpsuit, cargo pants with a long-sleeve top or a catsuit, then add grey shoulder panels, a utility belt, fingerless gloves and silver buckles. Natural curls, a short Afro, a tapered cut or a black wig with a white streak all fit. Lace-up combat boots and a belt pouch finish it, without tactical props.
9. Garnet Halloween Costume With Red Visor

Garnet asks for bold colour and a big shape. Wear a red-and-purple fitted jumpsuit or burgundy leggings with a colour-blocked bodysuit. Her gauntlets are the build: I cut them from lightweight craft foam sheets over a rolled base, because EVA foam this size gets heavy and warm on the hands. A square-shaped Afro wig makes the animated silhouette, or shape your own Afro or a high textured puff. A red visor or narrow translucent sunglasses cover the eyes; test them in a dim room first, since tinted visors hide steps at night. Plum lipstick, a little red blush, burgundy platforms or sneakers with DIY boot cuffs, and a star on the chest pull it together.
10. Monica Rambeau Halloween Costume With White Uniform

Monica Rambeau is the bright option if you want a superhero without black catsuit energy. Choose a white fitted jacket or long-sleeve top with black side panels, then black leggings or a matching jumpsuit. Narrow silver trim and a geometric chest emblem in removable fabric tape let you wear the jacket again later. Natural curls, twists, box braids or a smooth blowout all suit her. White shows every smudge, so I put the makeup on before dressing and keep a pack of wipes in the belt bag. Golden highlight, crisp liner and a warm brown gloss are enough. White ankle boots or black-and-white sneakers make it walkable, and the jacket helps on a cold night.
11. Raven Baxter Halloween Costume With Colorful Blazer

Raven Baxter is a thrift-store costume at heart, and the clashing is the point. Pair flared jeans with a colourful camisole and a cropped patterned blazer or a jacket with faux-fur trim, pulling from purple, orange, turquoise and pink. Loose curls, curly ponytails or braids with colourful clips all read early-2000s. Frosted shadow, thin liner and gloss do the beauty side. Hoops, stacked bangles and a mini shoulder bag add the noise, and a homemade psychic-vision card is a fun prop to hand out. Wear platform sneakers or chunky ankle boots. My one rule: commit to at least three loud colours, because two looks like an accident.
12. Penny Proud Halloween Costume With Red Skirt

Penny Proud is comfortable enough to wear all day. A burgundy cardigan or cropped jacket goes over a cream blouse and a red pleated skirt, with white ankle socks and burgundy loafers, flats or low sneakers. Two curly puffs, braided pigtails or bubble ponytails tied with red bands give her shape. Keep makeup light: moisturised skin, rosy blush, brown mascara and clear gloss. A small purple backpack and a handmade school notebook sell the student look. On a cold night, opaque tights under the skirt keep it practical, and this is one I'd happily suggest for a school or office day.
13. Susie Carmichael Halloween Costume With Yellow Dress

Susie Carmichael is a love letter to beaded braids. Start with a bright yellow A-line dress with short sleeves, purple leggings or opaque tights underneath and red-and-purple sneakers. Finish the braids with colourful beads, but keep them light and tie off the ends securely; heavy beads swing hard when you dance and pull at the roots by the end of the night. Fresh skin, a berry balm and a touch of gold on the lids are all the makeup she needs. Small hoops and a toy microphone or songbook nod to her singing. Adults can swap in a belted yellow shirt dress and still keep the primary colours.
14. Velma Halloween Costume With Orange Sweater

If you have an hour and a thrift store nearby, Velma is done. Wear an oversized orange turtleneck with a red pleated skirt, burnt-orange knee socks and burgundy loafers, or red tailored trousers for more coverage. The square glasses do more character work than the hair, so spend your effort there. A dark bob wig is traditional, though a curly bob, shoulder-length locs or a natural Afro looks just as convincing. Matte skin, warm brown shadow, peach blush and a muted coral lip suit her. Carry an old book, a magnifying glass or a notebook, and a structured satchel for your keys and phone.
15. Dionne Davenport Halloween Costume With Plaid Set

Dionne's plaid set is the one costume here you'll wear again in November. Choose a black-and-white plaid miniskirt with a matching blazer, or a plaid dress over a fitted white blouse, then knee-high socks or opaque tights and black platform loafers. Her braids can be long box braids, a high braided ponytail or your current protective style dressed up with a statement headband. Brown lip liner, nude gloss, defined lashes and softly arched brows get the '90s face right. Gold hoops, a mini backpack and, if you want the drama, an oversized faux-fur hat. Buy the separates in sizes that fit you now rather than altering a costume-shop set; real plaid hangs better.
16. Scary Spice Halloween Costume With Leopard Print

Scary Spice runs on leopard print, big hair and chunky shoes. Wear a leopard-print jumpsuit, a minidress over black shorts or a crop top with high-waisted pants. Natural curls are made for this: shape two high puffs, or use a large curly wig with soft golden highlights. Bronze shimmer, strong black liner, warm blush and brown-lined gloss handle the makeup. Add gold hoops, stacked bracelets and a toy microphone. Platform sneakers or chunky boots keep it true to the late '90s while still letting you dance. If you want more coverage, tights and a cropped faux-fur jacket balance the fitted pieces and keep you warm.
17. Janelle Monáe Halloween Costume With Tuxedo

Janelle Monáe's black-and-white tailoring might already be hanging in your closet. A crisp white button-down, slim black trousers, a fitted vest and a cropped tuxedo jacket form the base; add a black bow tie, suspenders and black-and-white oxfords. The fit makes this one: I'd rather you wear a cheaper jacket that's been taken in at the waist than an expensive one that hangs. A sculpted pompadour, braided updo, high puff or sleek short cut all suit her. Glowing skin, strong brows, subtle liner and a vivid red lip keep it refined. A vintage-style microphone and a small lapel flower finish it, and it's tidy enough for an office party.
18. Beyoncé Silver Performer Costume

For Beyoncé's silver stage look, layer a silver bodysuit over opaque tights, or pair a metallic top with matching wide-leg pants. A fringe jacket, silver gloves and crystal-style earrings give movement. Long honey-blonde waves, braids with metallic thread or a big curly ponytail work for hair. Chrome eyeshadow, bronzed cheeks, precise liner and glossy neutral lips catch the light. I'd check every metallic piece at the seams before the party, since cheap lamé and sequin fabrics split under stress where the stitching is loose. A toy microphone and a folding silver fan are safe props. Silver ankle boots or platform sneakers, a long metallic coat for the walk, and confident posture do the rest.
19. Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation Costume

Rhythm Nation is the costume for anyone who'd rather wear structured black than sparkle. High-waisted black trousers, a fitted turtleneck and a cropped military-style jacket with silver buttons form the uniform, plus black gloves, a wide belt and a matching cap. A low ponytail, long textured waves, braids tucked under the cap or a curly bob all fit. Matte skin, defined brows, smoky charcoal liner and a deep red-brown lip suit the mood. The single silver key earring is the detail people recognise, so don't skip it. Black lace-up boots give the support you'll want if someone starts the choreography, and a headset microphone is optional.
20. Aaliyah ’90s Halloween Costume

Aaliyah's look is relaxed streetwear with very specific beauty details. Loose black cargo pants or baggy jeans go with a fitted white crop top or tucked tank, an oversized black jacket and a wide belt with a metallic buckle. The hair swept across one eye is her signature; side-parted braids, locs or a sleek wig all manage it, though check you can still see kerbs on your covered side. Smoky brown shadow, soft contour and brown liner with clear gloss nail the era. Narrow sunglasses, silver hoops, a compact music-player prop and black combat boots or chunky sneakers finish it. A fitted bodysuit replaces the crop top if you want more coverage.
21. Left Eye ’90s Halloween Costume

Left Eye's costume is joyful and loose, which makes it a comfortable choice for a long night. Wear overalls with one strap undone over a bright cropped tee or fitted tank, then add colourful patches, a bandana, oversized hoops and tinted round sunglasses. High ponytails, braids or buns with bright elastics suit her. Draw the small line under one eye with a waterproof cosmetic liner rather than a regular pencil, which smudges into a bruise-like smear once you're warm. Warm blush and glossy brown lips, a toy microphone or small radio, and high-top sneakers finish it. No overalls? Cargo pants and a cropped vest keep the layered shape.
22. Grace Jones Halloween Costume With Hood

Grace Jones is about structure and posture, so the shoulders matter more than anything else. Wear a sleek black jumpsuit or a sharply tailored suit with exaggerated shoulders, adding pads if the jacket is too soft. A dramatic fabric hood, sculptural gold jewellery and a wide metallic belt build the shape. A flat-top wig gives her angular hair, or a close-cropped natural cut works on its own. Deep plum or blue shadow swept toward the temples, strong cheekbones, bold brows and a glossy dark-red lip make the face. Pick one oversized accessory instead of several. Carry a small geometric clutch and wear pointed boots or polished loafers.
23. Foxxy Cleopatra Halloween Costume With Gold Jumpsuit

Foxxy Cleopatra is '70s glamour in gold, flares and big hair. A metallic gold jumpsuit works, or gold bell-bottoms with a halter top and fitted jacket. The rounded Afro carries the silhouette, whether you pick out your own hair or use a soft textured wig; I shape a wig like this on a head form the night before so it isn't flat on arrival. Gold shimmer, dramatic liner, bronzed cheeks and a glossy caramel lip handle the face. Oversized hoops, stacked bangles, a wide belt and tinted sunglasses add the period detail. Carry a tiny gold bag and wear platform boots or chunky heels. A long-sleeve jumpsuit gives coverage without losing any of the impact.
24. Wednesday Addams Halloween Costume With Braids

Wednesday Addams suits braids and twists better than most people expect. Wear a black dress with a crisp white collar and cuffs over opaque black tights. Style two long braids, braided pigtails or dark twists tied with narrow black ribbon, with a neat centre part. Keep your complexion your own; there's no need to pale it. Cool brown shadow, softly smudged liner, minimal blush and a muted plum lip are enough. A detachable white collar is worth sewing or buying, because it turns any black dress into hers. Carry an old hardcover or a small black satchel, wear loafers or low combat boots, and add a tailored black coat for warmth. Keep the expression flat.
25. Pink Cowgirl Halloween Costume

A pink cowgirl doesn't need a character at all, which makes it easy to wear with friends. Choose a bright pink fringed shirt or fitted vest with matching flared pants, denim shorts over tights or a knee-length skirt, with a white blouse underneath for more coverage. Curls, braids or a long ponytail sit under a glittery pink cowboy hat. Rosy shadow, an inner-corner sparkle, lashes and glossy pink lips keep it fun. A rhinestone belt, star earrings, a bandana and a heart-shaped bag finish it. Western boots anchor everything; if you're buying new ones for the night, wear them around the house for a few evenings first. A ribbon lasso is the only prop you need.
26. Green Witch Halloween Costume With Black Dress

The green witch is the one place on this list where I'd use full face paint, so plan for it. Use a cosmetic-grade green paint blended over the face, neck and any visible skin on the arms, then press translucent powder over it; unset green transfers onto collars and everyone you hug. Underneath, a long black dress, fitted velvet gown or black blouse with a maxi skirt, plus a structured cape and a pointed hat. Deep green shadow, black liner, sculpted brows and dark berry lipstick add depth. A long black braided wig, textured ponytail or your own hair sits under the hat. Carry a light broom wrapped in ribbon and choose lace-up boots that keep the hem off the ground.
27. Glam Witch Halloween Costume With Purple Cape

Think of this witch as purple velvet and stars rather than warts and green skin. Wear a black midi dress or fitted jumpsuit under a purple cape, with patterned tights and buckled ankle boots. Velvet crushes when you sit, so I hang the cape in a steamy bathroom before the party to lift the pile. A curly high ponytail, long braids, soft locs or a silver-purple wig all suit it. Violet shadow, gold highlight, winged liner and a blackberry lip make the face. A wide-brim pointed hat, moon earrings and layered necklaces add depth, and a ribbon-wrapped broom or a light star wand finishes it. Comfortable enough to hand out candy at your own door.
28. Glam Vampire Halloween Costume With Red Cape

My glam vampire has no blood and no wounds, only drama. Choose a black velvet midi dress, a tailored jumpsuit or a lace blouse with wide-leg trousers, then layer a red-lined cape and a jewelled choker. A sleek middle-parted wig, long curls, a braided ponytail or locs styled off the face all suit it. Smoky burgundy eyes, sharp liner, sculpted cheeks and deep red lipstick do the heavy lifting. Fangs are fine for photos, but most cheap ones make talking and drinking awkward, so keep them in a pocket the rest of the time. A vintage compact or a red rose is the prop. Pointed flats or boots you can stand in all night finish it.
29. Black Cat Halloween Costume With Tulle Skirt

A black cat is the costume I recommend when you've got twenty minutes and a black turtleneck. Wear it with leggings, faux-leather pants or a tulle skirt over opaque tights, then add ears, a detachable tail and a slim belt. No wig needed; curls, a puff, braids, locs or a sleek ponytail all work. Draw the nose and whiskers with a face-safe liner and keep the lines fine, since thick whiskers smudge into grey once you eat or drink. Gold shimmer, a sharp wing and a glossy neutral lip finish the face. Ballet flats, sneakers or ankle boots, a bell choker and a cat-shaped purse are all you need.
30. Butterfly Fairy Halloween Costume With Wings

Butterfly wings are the part to test, not the dress. Most costume wings use an elastic harness that digs into the shoulders after an hour, so I wear them around the house first and add a strip of felt under the straps if they rub. The base is a purple, blue or pink tulle dress over a secure bodysuit, or a fitted top with a skirt, plus floral wrist cuffs and a delicate headband. Braids threaded with colour, curls in a high puff or a half-up style with butterfly clips all suit it. Iridescent shadow, jewel-toned liner and berry gloss make the face; use only skin-safe gems around the eyes. A flower wand, metallic flats and tights under a short hem finish it.
31. Mermaid Halloween Costume With Braided Hair

This mermaid skips the tail and puts the effort into the hair. Decorate long braids or locs with gold cuffs, shell clips, blue thread and pearl pins; slide-on cuffs are easier to remove than anything glued. Pair an iridescent green or blue maxi skirt that flares slightly but still lets you take normal steps with a fitted purple, aqua or pearl-toned top. Turquoise shadow, pearly highlight, coral blush and glossy lips handle the face, with a little shimmer along the collarbones. Carry a shell-shaped purse, wear flat metallic sandals or aqua shoes, and drape a sheer blue shawl for movement and warmth.
32. Medusa Halloween Costume With Gold Snakes

Medusa works when the snakes look decorative, not lifelike. Wear a draped green maxi dress or an olive jumpsuit cinched with a gold rope belt. Attach small rubber or fabric snakes to a headband, then weave them among braids, locs, twists or a curly updo; I stitch or wire them on, since hot glue on a plastic headband snaps off as soon as you lean against something. Paint the snakes gold and green. Emerald smoky eyes, crisp liner, gold highlight and plum lipstick make the face, with scale texture at the temples pressed through fishnet. Gold cuffs, a small round purse and flat metallic sandals finish it, plus a light green cape for movement.
33. Greek Goddess Halloween Costume With Gold Cape

A Greek goddess is the easiest formal costume here: a white maxi dress and good gold details. A draped one-shoulder dress, a pleated gown or a white jumpsuit with a flowing overskirt all work, cinched with a braided gold belt and a light gold cape. A braided crown, curly updo, high puff or loc bun decorated with leaf clips gives the classical shape. Bronze shadow, a radiant highlight, soft brows and a rich neutral lip complement deeper skin. Gold cuffs and drop earrings are enough jewellery. Wear gold flat sandals or low block heels, and carry a cardigan; sleeveless white drapes are cold by midnight.
34. Celestial Moon Costume With Silver Dress

The celestial moon costume is mostly about a headpiece that stays put. I build the crescent on a padded headband or a comb and keep it light, because anything heavy tilts forward the moment you look down at your phone. The base is a silver maxi dress, a glittering jumpsuit or a metallic top with a layered navy tulle skirt, plus a sheer cape covered in adhesive stars. Braids threaded with silver cord, a curly silver wig or natural hair with temporary glitter gel all fit. Navy and silver shadow, pearl highlight, white liner and plum gloss make the face. Star earrings, silver cuffs, a moon-shaped bag and metallic flats or silver ankle boots finish it.
35. Disco Diva Halloween Costume With Silver Jumpsuit

The disco diva is meant for dancing, so I start with how the pants move. Wear a wide-leg metallic jumpsuit or glittery flares with a fitted wrap top, and hem them to your shoe height; long flares catch under a platform and trip you on stairs. A cropped sequin jacket and a wide silver belt add shine. A rounded Afro, fluffy curls, a braided high ponytail or a textured wig brings the volume. Lavender shimmer, strong liner, glowing cheeks and glossy berry lips handle the face. Big hoops, tinted glasses and a mirrored mini bag are easy accessories, and platform boots or stable block heels finish it.
36. ’70s Roller Skater Halloween Costume

You don't need to skate to wear the '70s roller skater. Pair rainbow-striped shorts or flared athletic pants with a fitted ringer tee and a satin bomber, then add striped knee socks, wristbands and a retro visor. A rounded Afro, two fluffy puffs or long curls held back with a colourful headband suit it. Pastel shadow, rosy blush, fine black liner and shiny gloss keep it bright. Carry clean skates by their laces for photos and wear supportive white sneakers the rest of the night. Star earrings and a small belt bag are all the accessories you need; the bright stripes do the decade work.
37. ’80s Aerobics Halloween Costume

The '80s aerobics look is the most comfortable costume on this page. Layer a bright leotard or fitted tank over high-waisted leggings, then add leg warmers and a cropped sweatshirt worn off one shoulder in neon pink, turquoise, purple or yellow. A high curly ponytail, side ponytail, braided puff or big curls held by a wide sweatband give the shape. A cotton sweatband also protects your edges from tight elastic, which I'd avoid for a full night. Blue or purple shadow, bright blush and glossy pink lips suit it. Add wristbands, oversized plastic earrings, a water bottle and white high-tops, with a waist pack for your phone.
38. ’90s Hip-Hop Halloween Costume

The '90s hip-hop look is about proportion: big on the bottom or the top, never both too tight. Wear baggy jeans with a colourful windbreaker and a fitted tank or plain tee, then add a bucket hat, bamboo-style hoops and a chunky costume chain. Box braids, a high braided ponytail, a short curly cut or hair tucked under the hat all suit it. Brown lip liner with gloss, thin liner and soft matte skin get the beauty right. A lightweight cardboard boombox or a cassette-shaped purse is the prop. Finish with high-tops or sturdy lace-up boots. Keep it about the fashion and the colours you actually like rather than an impression of anyone.
39. Y2K Pop Star Halloween Costume

A Y2K pop star mixes metallic fabric with glossy, slightly overdone beauty. Wear silver cargo pants or a pleated mini skirt over opaque tights with a fitted colourful top, and layer a cropped faux-fur jacket or shiny bomber for warmth. Spiky buns, a high ponytail, braided pigtails or curls with butterfly clips set the era. Frosted shadow, thin liner, body shimmer and brown-lined gloss finish the face. Body shimmer migrates onto everything you touch, so keep it to the collarbones and shoulders. Tinted sunglasses, a tiny shoulder bag, rhinestone jewellery and a headset microphone are the accessories, with platform sneakers or chunky boots. Mix early-2000s details into your own character rather than copying one star.
40. Pink Fashion Doll Halloween Costume

A pink fashion doll looks expensive when you mix two or three shades of pink rather than one flat colour. Wear a hot-pink fit-and-flare dress, a tailored jumpsuit or a matching blazer and trousers, with a coordinating belt, a structured mini bag and oversized sunglasses. Natural curls in a bouncy ponytail, long box braids with pink ribbon or a big curled wig in a believable shade all work. Rosy shadow, glowing skin, fluttery lashes and glossy pink lips suit it. A pink hairbrush or tiny purse is the prop, and shoes can be pumps, ballet flats or platform sneakers, depending on how long you'll be standing.
41. Astronaut Halloween Costume With Silver Boots

The astronaut is warm, practical and easy to sew from a utility jumpsuit. A white jumpsuit, or matching cargo pants with a zip-front jacket, gets silver fabric tape around the cuffs, knees and pockets and homemade mission patches that don't copy a real agency. Braids in a low bun, locs in a ponytail or curls under an open lightweight helmet all fit. Silver liner, a strong highlight and glossy neutral lips give the futuristic touch. Carry a small silver backpack or a clear crossbody as your equipment, and wear white sneakers or silver ankle boots. Avoid sealed helmets; they fog up within minutes and muffle everything people say to you.
42. Mad Scientist Halloween Costume With Lab Coat

The mad scientist is my favourite last-minute costume because a white lab coat does most of the work. Wear black trousers and a bright blouse under the coat, then cover it with colourful removable notes or science symbols. Goggles pushed up on the forehead, fitted gloves and an ID badge with a silly invented name sell the character. Tease a curly wig upward, pick out your Afro for extra volume or make two high puffs with silver temporary spray. Purple liner, bright highlight, strong brows and glossy lips are enough. Plastic test tubes of coloured water in a secure holder make the prop; tape the caps shut so nothing spills on a host's sofa. White sneakers or black loafers finish it.
43. Ringmaster Halloween Costume With Red Jacket

A ringmaster lives on a well-fitted red jacket, so start there. A structured red tailcoat goes over a white blouse with black fitted trousers or a knee-length skirt, then add gold braid, decorative buttons and a black bow tie. A small top hat on a headband stays put better than a full-size hat on a high puff. A high braided ponytail, sculpted curls, a loc bun or a sleek bob fits neatly beneath it. Gold shadow, precise liner, warm blush and a classic red lip suit the theatre of it. Carry a printed programme or a ribbon-wrapped baton instead of a whip, and wear knee-high boots, loafers or heeled ankle boots.
44. Scarecrow Halloween Costume With Overalls

The scarecrow is cosy and cheap, and it forgives every thrift-store find. Layer denim overalls over an orange, mustard or plaid shirt, with fabric patches on the knees and pockets; a few big, uneven hand stitches read better than neat machine work here. Low braided pigtails, curly puffs or hair tucked under a floppy straw hat suit it. Warm bronze shadow, rosy blush, freckles and short stitch lines at the mouth in brown liner finish the face, without anything that looks like a wound. A raffia belt, a sunflower pin and a small basket of faux leaves are the details. Brown lace-up boots, plus a cardigan under the overalls, keep you warm.
45. Rosie The Riveter Halloween Costume

Rosie the Riveter is built from sturdy closet basics: high-waisted dark jeans or navy work trousers with a denim button-down. Roll the sleeves neatly and tie a red polka-dot scarf around a curly puff, bun, braids, twists or locs. The scarf has to survive that flexed-arm pose all night, so I pin it at the back with two bobby pins crossed in an X. Defined brows, a subtle wing, warm blush and a classic red lip set the period. Small studs and a vintage-style name badge are enough jewellery. Wear brown work boots or clean white sneakers, and leave real tools at home.
Silver, White and Green Paint on Deeper Skin
Several of these looks ask for colours that behave badly on deep skin straight out of the pot: Domino's white patch, Storm's silver, the green witch's full face. White and pale silver turn ashy and patchy when they go on thick, and green can look muddy over warm undertones. None of that means you can't wear them. It means you build them differently.
- Patch-test any paint on the inside of your wrist a day ahead, especially if you have sensitive skin.
- Moisturise and let it sink in for ten minutes so the paint doesn't cling to dry patches.
- For white or silver, lay down a thin first layer with a damp sponge, let it dry, then add a second. Thin layers look solid; one thick layer cracks.
- Under green, a light layer of a yellow-toned base keeps the colour clear instead of murky.
- Press translucent powder over every layer and finish with setting spray. This is what keeps it off your collar.
- Take it off with an oil cleanser or balm before you use soap; scrubbing paint off deep skin leaves it dry and irritated by morning.
If you only want a hint of the character, skip the full face. A silver lid and a white streak in the hair says Storm. One clean white patch with everything else in your normal makeup says Domino. Green on the face only, with gloves and a high collar, is far easier than painting your neck and arms.
Shoes and Hems for a Night on Your Feet
Many of these costumes have long hems: the goddess gown, the witch dresses, the mermaid skirt, the disco flares. Hem them to the exact shoes you'll wear, standing up, because a hem set for heels drags once you switch to flats at midnight. If you'll be walking outside, I'd take any floor-length skirt up half an inch so it misses puddles and steps. For boots, scuff the soles on a rough pavement or with sandpaper before the night; new soles are slippery on wet leaves and tiled floors.
Wear the Character, Keep Your Own Hair
A costume works when people know who you are and you're still comfortable at the end of the night. Every look here can be worn with curls, braids, locs, protective styles, wigs or a close crop, and most can be pulled together from closet basics, thrift finds, removable fabric tape and light craft materials. Change hemlines, sleeves, shoes and layers to suit your evening. Don't feel bound by how a character was first drawn or cast; colour, silhouette, one good prop and the right makeup tell the story. Pick the one that sounds most like you and wear it with confidence.
