Storybook characters are a gift to anyone dressing up, because most of them come with built-in colours and one object everybody knows: a red hood, a glass slipper, a poisoned apple, a golden braid. That makes them ideal for Halloween, school days, cosplay meetups and themed parties. Below are 30 of them, from princesses and heroes to animals, villains and a few group ideas. Each one covers the clothing base, hair, makeup, props and shoes, and most can be pulled together from thrift finds, closet basics and craft supplies. I've also noted where to adjust fabrics and layers for kids, different bodies and cold weather.

Three Details That Tell People Which Story You're In
Storybook characters live or die on recognition. When I build one, I don't start with the dress. I start by naming the three things a stranger would need to see to guess the character, then I make sure each of those three is bold enough to read from across a room.
- The colour block. Snow White is blue, yellow and red; Little Red is one red shape; Belle is gold. Get the main colours right and in the right places before buying anything else.
- The silhouette piece. A stand-up collar, a hooded cape, puff sleeves, a pointed cap. This is the item people skip and the one that makes the outline look right.
- The object. An apple, a basket, a clock at midnight, a stack of tiny mattresses. One clear prop beats five small accessories.
A quick test I use: take a phone photo of the finished costume from the far end of a room and look at it small on the screen. If you can't tell who it is at that size, one of the three details is too quiet. Usually it's the colour, either a shade too pale or a key colour hidden under a cape.
1. Cinderella Fairy Tale Costume

Cinderella's ballroom look starts with a pale blue floor-length dress: full skirt, fitted bodice, delicate silver trim. A light petticoat gives the volume without a heavy hoop, which is hard to sit in and impossible on stairs. A polished high bun with a pale blue headband and a few soft curls at the face. Shimmery blue shadow, rosy blush and a light pink lip. Long white gloves, a black ribbon choker and a small silver clutch. Clear flats or low silver heels stand in for the glass slipper, and I'd choose the flats if there's any dancing. A miniature clock stuck at midnight is the detail that makes people say her name.
2. Little Red Riding Hood Fairy Tale Costume

Everything here hangs on the cape, so spend your effort on a bright red hood that sits well on the shoulders. Wear it over a white peasant blouse and a black or brown lace-up dress with a knee-length red skirt, plus opaque tights or leggings. Loose curls, a low braid or two braids tied with red ribbon. Fresh makeup: rosy cheeks, light mascara and a natural red lip. A woven basket with artificial bread, fabric flowers and a folded checked cloth weighs almost nothing. Brown lace-up boots or flat Mary Janes. A fleece cape is warmer than satin and hangs more like a real hood, which matters on a cold walk.
3. Snow White Fairy Tale Costume

Snow White has one of the clearest colour codes in fairy tales: blue bodice, yellow skirt, red accents. Start with a royal blue fitted top with short puff sleeves, a long yellow skirt and a high white stand-up collar. A short red cape adds the storybook layer. A chin-length dark bob or a black bob wig, with a red bow headband. Soft foundation, rosy blush, defined lashes and a classic red lip. Carry a shiny artificial apple in a small basket rather than a real one you'll be holding all night. Red or yellow ballet flats, and optional white gloves. The stand-up collar is the piece most people skip and the one I'd prioritise, because it changes the whole silhouette; a little fusible interfacing inside keeps it upright.
4. Rapunzel Fairy Tale Costume

Rapunzel is all about the braid. Build the outfit around a lavender dress with a fitted lace-up bodice, puff sleeves and an ankle-length skirt; a few ribbon bows or fabric flowers make an inexpensive dress look storybook. Then the hair: a long golden braid from a braided wig or a synthetic extension. Synthetic hair is heavy at that length, so I pin the braid to the back of the dress at the waist to take the weight off the scalp. Weave pastel flowers and thin purple ribbons through it with small pins. Light purple shadow, warm pink blush and a glossy rose lip. A frying pan cut from painted foam or cardboard, never a real one. Lavender flats, soft boots or nude shoes that let the dress and braid lead.
5. Goldilocks Fairy Tale Costume

Goldilocks comes together from everyday clothes. A blue or yellow knee-length dress with puff sleeves, a white collar and a full skirt, a ruffled white apron over it and cream tights for cooler weather. Naturally curly blonde hair tied with a satin ribbon, or a shoulder-length golden ringlet wig. Peach blush, neutral shadow, a few freckles and a soft pink lip. Carry a wooden spoon and a light bowl marked with three small bear symbols, which tells the story without any writing on the clothes. Brown Mary Janes, lace-up boots or neutral flats. Cheap ringlet wigs tangle fast; I brush them out with fingers only and a little leave-in spray, never a hairbrush.
6. Alice In Wonderland Fairy Tale Costume

Alice is a light blue knee-length dress with short puff sleeves and a crisp white apron. A structured petticoat gives the shape, and white tights keep it neat. Blonde hair in loose waves under a wide black headband, or a natural-looking shoulder-length wig. Light blue shadow, pink blush, mascara and a rose lip. A small teacup, an oversized paper key or a white plush rabbit makes a safe prop, and a tiny bottle on a ribbon necklace adds a nice detail. Black Mary Janes are traditional, though flat boots are better outside. The apron is what sells it, so I make sure it's bright white and pressed, with the bib pinned flat.
7. Queen Of Hearts Fairy Tale Costume

The Queen of Hearts should command a room. Wear a red-and-black dress with a fitted bodice, full skirt and white collar, and decorate the bodice and hem with felt heart appliqués; felt needs no hemming, so this is beginner sewing. Black tights and a short red cape for warmth. A high curled updo or a dramatic red wig under a small gold crown. Sharp brows, a heart-shaped red lip and pale shimmery shadow are theatrical but wearable. A heart-topped sceptre in painted cardboard or foam. Red heels, black boots or glitter flats. Felt hearts held with fabric glue lift at the points on polyester satin, so I add a couple of hand stitches at each tip.
8. Mad Hatter Fairy Tale Costume

The Mad Hatter is the most fun to thrift, because nothing has to match. Start with a bright button-down, a patterned waistcoat, cropped trousers and a long velvet or brocade jacket. Add striped socks and an oversized bow tie in clashing colours. Orange, copper or bright hair in messy curls under a tall top hat trimmed with ribbon, fabric scraps and paper tags. Warm shadow, soft brows, rosy cheeks and a playful bit of colour around the eyes. An empty decorative teapot or a light teacup on a saucer. Lace-up boots, loafers or vintage-style oxfords. My rule is mismatched patterns but only two or three colours repeating, otherwise it slides from whimsical into random.
9. Peter Pan Fairy Tale Costume

Peter Pan has to be easy to move in. A leaf-green tunic with a jagged hem over dark green leggings or slim brown trousers, cinched with a wide brown belt, and a short green cape if it's cold. Short brown or auburn hair with tousled texture, or longer hair tucked under a pointed green felt cap with a red feather. Minimal makeup: warm bronzer, defined brows and a few freckles. A rolled paper map or small pouch instead of a weapon. Brown lace-up boots, moccasin-style shoes or sturdy ankle boots. Cut the jagged hem from felt or fleece; woven cotton frays at every point after one wash.
10. Green Pixie Fairy Tale Costume

The green pixie is energy and sparkle. A sleeveless leaf-shaped dress, a layered tulle skirt and shimmery translucent wings, with a fitted top and opaque green leggings underneath for more coverage. Blonde hair in a high bun with short side-swept bangs, or a pale golden pixie wig. Sparkling green shadow, peach blush, glossy lips and a few small biodegradable face gems at the outer corners of the eyes. A star wand or a tiny pouch of paper confetti that stays shut. Green flats, pom-pom shoes or flexible ankle boots. Keep the wings compact enough for doorways. Face gems hold best on skin with no moisturiser underneath, so I apply them before any cream product.
11. Beauty And The Beast Princess Costume

A golden yellow ball gown tells everyone which story you're from. Look for an off-the-shoulder or portrait-neckline dress with a fitted bodice and a gathered floor-length skirt; gold ribbon, fabric roses and a few rhinestones can lift a plain formal dress from a thrift rack. Brown hair half-up in curls with a low bun and loose tendrils. Warm gold shadow, rose blush, defined lashes and a soft berry lip. Long yellow gloves and a delicate gold necklace. Carry a single artificial red rose under a clear lightweight dome or in a gold-trimmed basket. Gold flats or low block heels hidden under the skirt. Yellow is tricky on many skin tones, so I'd pick a warm golden yellow over a cool lemon shade.
12. Beast Prince Fairy Tale Costume

You can play the Beast without a full mask, and you'll be much happier for it. Black trousers, a white ruffled shirt, a royal blue tailcoat and a gold brocade waistcoat, with a white cravat and gold trim along the jacket. A brushed-back brown mane wig with soft furry ears and small curved horns on a comfortable headband. Brown makeup at the temples, brows and cheekbones and a darkened nose, leaving most of the face free. Furry gloves or brown cuffs suggest paws; I'd go with cuffs so the hands still work for eating and phones. An artificial red rose, and black dress shoes or polished ankle boots. Paired with the yellow gown above, it's one of the strongest couples on this list.
13. Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale Costume

Sleeping Beauty in pink is soft and classic. Choose a floor-length dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a pointed waist and a pale cream or white collar, with a light petticoat for shape. Long golden waves under a small gold crown. Pink shadow, flushed cheeks, curled lashes and a rose lip. A single artificial rose or a small decorative pillow nods to the story. Pink ballet flats, low gold heels or cushioned flats under the gown. A fitted cape adds warmth outside. Off-the-shoulder necklines slide down all evening, so I sew a strip of clear silicone elastic inside the neckline or use fashion tape.
14. Dark Fairy Tale Costume

The dark fairy is drama without gore. Wear a long black or deep purple dress with structured shoulders, flowing sleeves and a layered skirt, plus a high collar or short cape in velvet, satin or inexpensive costume fabric. Dark hair in a smooth updo under a curved horn headpiece made from lightweight foam. Purple and charcoal shadow, defined cheekbones and a deep berry lip. A black rose, a crystal-style staff or a soft raven. Black pointed flats or heeled ankle boots. Horns are top-heavy, so I build them on a wide headband with a comb sewn to each side; without that, they tip back by the second hour.
15. Little Mermaid Fairy Tale Costume

This sea princess suggests a mermaid but lets you walk. Pair a shimmery aqua maxi skirt with a flared hem and a fitted lavender top with shell-shaped fabric details. Stretchy fabric beats a narrow tail; tails turn stairs and pavement into a hazard. Long red hair in loose beachy waves with pearl clips or tiny flowers. Turquoise shadow, luminous highlighter, coral blush and a glossy pink lip. A small shell-shaped bag, a decorative comb or a plush sea creature. Pearl earrings and a delicate ocean necklace. Nude flats, aqua sandals or comfortable shoes hidden by the skirt. Bright red wigs read very orange in flash photos, so I'd choose a deep red over a cherry one.
16. Sea Witch Fairy Tale Costume

The sea witch is the villain everyone wants to play. A fitted black-and-purple top with a dramatic neckline over a long skirt built from layers of purple tulle. Soft fabric tentacles stitched around the lower edge, kept short enough that you won't step on them. A high white updo or a big silver-white wig. Lavender shadow, sharp black liner, strong brows and a deep red lip. A gold shell necklace is the signature piece, and a small sealed bottle of coloured water with glitter makes a magic potion. Black boots or purple flats with textured tights. I stuff tentacles lightly with polyester fibrefill rather than leaving them flat, so they curl and move.
17. Frog Prince Fairy Tale Costume

Royal clothes plus frog details make this funny and easy. Green trousers, a crisp white shirt, a gold-trimmed green waistcoat and a short velvet cape, with a wide gold sash or bow tie. Neat hair under a small crown fixed to a green frog-eye headband. A little green face paint at the temples and cheeks, most of the face left bare, plus rosy blush. A large artificial lily pad or a small plush frog. Green loafers, lace-up boots or sneakers in removable green shoe covers. Green face paint is one of the colours most likely to stain light collars, so I set it with translucent powder and keep it well above the jawline.
18. Princess And The Pea Fairy Tale Costume

The Princess and the Pea is a clever pick because the prop does the explaining. Wear a pastel nightgown-style dress with puff sleeves and lace trim, a satin robe or short cape, and leggings underneath for walking outside. Loose bedtime curls, a tiny tilted crown and a sleep mask pushed up on the forehead. Soft lavender shadow, pink blush and a natural lip for that sleepy look. Carry a light stack of miniature fabric mattresses tied with ribbon, with one bright green felt pea on top. Decorative slippers, ballet flats or low shoes with pom-poms. I make the mattresses from scrap fabric stuffed with fibrefill, so the whole stack weighs almost nothing.
19. Hansel And Gretel Couple Costume

Hansel and Gretel suit couples, siblings or best friends. Hansel wears brown knee-length trousers, a cream shirt, suspenders, a green vest and a small alpine cap. Gretel wears a blue or red peasant dress with a white blouse, fitted bodice and apron. Neat braids, soft waves or tidy storybook hair on both. Rosy cheeks, natural makeup and a few freckles. Each carries a light basket of colourful felt sweets, artificial cookies and paper-wrapped treats. Brown lace-up boots or flats. I repeat the same ribbon colour on Gretel's apron and Hansel's cap and match the vest to her bodice, so the pair reads as one family.
20. Gingerbread Person Fairy Tale Costume

A gingerbread person is a soft, cosy build from craft-store basics. Start with a brown sweatshirt dress, a sweatsuit or a fitted brown top and trousers. White ricrack along the cuffs, neckline and hems mimics icing, felt circles make candy buttons, and a big red or green bow tie finishes the front. Hair in a bun under a rounded brown hood, or a padded cookie headband. White liner details, round rosy cheeks and a bright pink or red lip. A foam candy cane or a light tray of fake cookies. Brown sneakers, flats or boot covers. Ricrack peels when it's only glued, so I'd stitch it down with a long running stitch; it takes an evening and lasts for years.
21. Puss In Boots Fairy Tale Costume

Puss in Boots is swagger plus a hat. An orange or rust base, slim orange trousers and a fitted top, with a short cape or brown vest, a wide belt and soft orange gloves with felt paw pads. Orange hair in tousled waves, or a furry hood with pointed ears. Delicate whiskers, a small pink nose and winged black liner, polished rather than mask-like. A feathered black hat and a small drawstring pouch. Tall black or brown fold-over boots you can walk in. A detachable orange tail finishes it, and I attach tails to a belt loop with a strong safety pin or snap, since a tail pinned to thin trousers drags them down.
22. Pinocchio Fairy Tale Costume

Pinocchio's bright colours make him easy to thrift. Red shorts, a yellow button-down, white gloves and a black or navy vest, a large blue bow tie and cream knee socks. Short dark hair under a yellow felt cap with a blue ribbon and a small red feather. Peach blush, defined brows and a few painted wooden-joint lines near the elbows or cheeks. A soft foam nose fixed with skin-safe adhesive works for photos and comes off when you want to eat or talk. A small storybook or a gold star. Brown loafers, flat lace-ups or ankle boots. Patch-test any skin adhesive the day before; I wouldn't wear one for the first time on the night.
23. Rumpelstiltskin Fairy Tale Costume

Rumpelstiltskin lives in texture and old, layered fabrics. Dark brown trousers, a cream poet shirt, an embroidered waistcoat and a long burgundy or forest-green coat, with a patterned scarf or cravat tied loosely and fingerless gloves. Grey, copper or dark hair, tousled on purpose, under a soft pointed cap. Bronze shadow, defined brows and warm contour for a weathered face that isn't scary. A spool of metallic gold thread and a bundle of straw-coloured raffia tell the tale. Scuffed brown lace-ups ground it. Thrifted pieces that already look worn beat new ones here, and a light dusting of brown eyeshadow on the coat edges ages them further.
24. Jack And The Beanstalk Fairy Tale Costume

Jack is a simple countryside outfit made memorable by the beanstalk. Tan trousers, a cream shirt, green suspenders and a brown or forest-green vest, with felt patches for a working-farm look. Messy brown waves under a soft newsboy cap. Natural makeup: warm blush, freckles and lightly defined brows. Wrap artificial vines around one suspender and carry a pouch of oversized gold-painted foam beans. A small cardboard cloud and castle on a light vine prop finish the story. Brown lace-ups or sturdy walking shoes. I zip-tie the vines to the suspender at a few points; loose vines catch on door handles and drag.
25. Three Little Pigs Group Costume

Three people in pink, each with a different building material, is the whole joke. Each wears pink overalls, a pink dress or a pink top and trousers with matching tights, plus soft pig-ear headbands, curly fabric tails and light pink noses. Pigtails, buns or short styles under the ears. Rosy cheeks, tiny freckles and simple black liner for friendly pig faces. The props do the identifying: a bundle of paper straw, a handful of light craft sticks, a small cardboard panel painted like brick. Pink sneakers, flats or rain boots. Pinks vary wildly from shop to shop, so I'd buy all three bases on the same trip, or accept the difference and treat it as each pig's own shade.
26. Big Bad Wolf Fairy Tale Costume

The Big Bad Wolf can be mischievous and sharp-dressed instead of scary. Charcoal trousers, a grey shirt, a textured faux-fur vest and a short checked cape or jacket, with soft grey gloves, a detachable furry tail and pointed wolf ears on a headband. Grey or dark hair in tousled layers, or a swept-back silver wig. Smoky grey shadow, strong brows, subtle whisker lines and a darkened nose, the rest of the face left visible. An oversized storybook or a small basket. Black lace-ups or grey sneakers. Faux fur sheds like crazy when it's first cut, so I shake and lint-roll each piece outside before sewing. Pair the wolf with Red Riding Hood or the three pigs.
27. Fairy Godmother Fairy Tale Costume

The Fairy Godmother needs a soft, sparkly gown: pale blue or lavender, floor-length, with flowing sleeves and a sheer cape scattered with subtle stars. A structured petticoat adds volume, but a simple A-line skirt is far easier to walk in. Silver, white or lavender hair in a neat curled updo under a small hood or a crystal headband. Luminous base, soft blue shadow, pink blush and a pearly lip. A star wand made from light foam and ribbon, and a little pouch of paper stars. Silver ballet flats or low glitter heels. It suits adults, teens and older kids equally. Grey or silver wigs can look harsh, so I warm them up with soft pink blush and a pearly lip.
28. Snow Queen Fairy Tale Costume

The Snow Queen is regal and, handily, one of the warmest costumes here. An icy blue or white gown with a fitted bodice, long sleeves and a layered skirt, under a sheer silver cape with snowflake appliqués or glittering fabric paint. Platinum, white or silver hair in a thick side braid, a high ponytail or a sculpted updo. Pale blue shadow, silver liner, cool pink blush and a shimmery lip. A light crystal-style crown, plus a clear acrylic wand or large foam snowflake. White boots, silver flats or low block heels. Thermal leggings hide under the long skirt, so I'd suggest this one for any cold outdoor event.
29. Pied Piper Fairy Tale Costume

The Pied Piper mixes medieval shapes with deliberate mismatch. Fitted trousers in two contrasting colours, a cream shirt, a patterned tunic and a short cape, plus a wide belt and striped socks for a travelling-performer look. Soft medium-length waves under a feathered felt cap. Warm makeup: defined brows, peach blush and subtle liner. A painted cardboard flute tucked in the belt between photos. Small plush mice stitched to the cape or shoes make the story clear. Brown ankle boots or flexible lace-ups. Two-colour trousers are easiest made from two pairs of thrifted leggings, cut and swapped at the centre seam.
30. Enchanted Unicorn Fairy Tale Costume

The unicorn brings a pastel fantasy option. A white fitted top with a layered pastel tulle skirt, or white trousers with iridescent panels, and a short shimmery cape plus small wings if you like. Long waves in temporary pastel pink, blue and lavender, or a multicoloured wig. A padded spiral horn and soft ears on a secure headband. Pearly shadow, pink blush, glossy lips and a few face gems. A star wand or pastel ribbon hoop. White sneakers, silver boots or glitter flats. I'd make the horn from felt stuffed with fibrefill rather than rigid plastic, which is lighter and doesn't hurt anyone when you turn your head in a crowd.
Ears, Horns and Tails That Don't Droop
A third of these characters are animals or creatures, and their ears, horns and tails are usually the first pieces to fail. The fixes are simple and mostly about where the weight goes.
- Fabric ears flop unless they're stiffened. I sandwich a layer of stiff felt or heavy fusible interfacing between the two ear pieces, and bend a short length of craft wire into the edge for pointed wolf or cat ears.
- Glue ears and horns to a wide headband wrapped in fabric or felt. Bare plastic bands are slippery and the glue lets go.
- Horns and unicorn spirals should be light: felt stuffed with fibrefill, or craft foam shaped around a paper cone. Anything heavier pulls the headband backwards.
- Tails belong on a belt, not on the trousers. Sew a loop to the top of the tail and thread a belt through it, or fix it to a belt loop with a snap. Pinned to thin fabric, a long tail drags the waistband down.
- Keep tails short in crowds or for kids, roughly to the back of the knee. Longer tails get stepped on, and anyone stepping on them yanks the whole costume.
One Tale, Several People
Several of these stories already come with a cast: Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Hansel, Gretel and the witch, three pigs and a wolf, Belle and the Beast, Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother. For a group, I pick one shared material or colour that every character wears somewhere, such as the same checked fabric on the wolf's cape and Red's basket cloth. It's a small thing, but it makes a group look planned instead of four people who happened to arrive together.
Which Story Will You Step Out Of?
A good storybook costume pairs a signature detail people know with clothes you can live in. These characters cover princesses, animals, villains, magical creatures, heroes and groups, so there's something for almost any gathering. Many come together from thrifted dresses, basic shirts, simple wigs, felt and lightweight props. Put your effort into the character's signature colours and one or two meaningful objects, not into every last detail. Comfortable shoes, secure headpieces and lengths you can walk in will matter more as the night goes on than any extra trim. Pick the story you loved most as a child; it's usually the costume you'll enjoy wearing most.
