Alice is one of the few characters you can recognise from a silhouette alone: a short puffed sleeve, a full skirt, a white pinafore and a black band in the hair. Once those four are in place, almost anything else can change. Below are classic versions, quick closet builds, warm and cold weather options, and twists on the story's tea cups, playing cards, clocks and looking glass, each with the dress, hair, makeup, prop and shoes worked out. As a sewist I'd say the pinafore is where your effort pays most, so I've added notes on making one before the list starts. Any of these will carry over from Halloween to a book day, a themed party or a family dress-up.

Sewing a Simple Pinafore in an Afternoon
Shop-bought aprons are usually too short and too narrow to give Alice her full shape. A pinafore is one of the easiest pieces to sew, and it goes over any blue dress you already own. I make mine from white cotton poplin or a plain sheet, because both press crisp and wash hot.
- Cut the skirt as a rectangle about one and a half times your hip measurement wide and long enough to stop an inch above the dress hem.
- Gather the top edge with two rows of long stitches and pull it in to fit your front waist, leaving the back open.
- Cut a bib roughly the width of your chest between the armpits and line it so the edges are clean.
- Stitch the skirt and bib to a waistband that extends into long ties, then add two straps that cross at the back and button or pin to the band.
- Finish with a narrow double-folded hem and give it a hard press with a little starch.
If you don't sew, a full-length white bib apron from a kitchen shop gets you most of the way. Pin the sides in a little at the back and tie the bow as wide as the ties allow. The light blue most people picture comes from the animated film, which is why it's the colour that reads fastest at a party.
1. Classic Alice Costume With Blue Dress

The classic version is easier to put together than it looks. Find a light blue knee-length dress with short puff sleeves and a flared skirt, then layer a crisp white pinafore over it, ideally one with a bib front and a big bow tied at the back. A wide bow needs a long tie: I cut mine at least twice the waist measurement so the loops come out full rather than stubby. White knee socks, black Mary Janes, softly curled blonde hair or a shoulder-length wig and a wide black headband carry the rest. Rosy cheeks, pale blue shadow, mascara and a pink lip are all the makeup it needs. A teacup, a toy white rabbit or a key make good props, and white bloomers under the skirt give coverage.
2. Vintage Alice Costume With Pinafore

Old storybook illustrations are the reference for this one, so everything gets a little softer and older. A dusty blue cotton midi with a fitted bodice, gathered skirt and elbow-length puff sleeves goes under an ivory pinafore with eyelet trim, covered buttons and deep pockets. Cream tights and black T-strap shoes suit the period. Natural blonde hair or a waved wig, tied with a narrow black ribbon. Light foundation, peach blush, brown mascara and a muted rose lip. Carry a cloth-bound book and a key cut from craft foam. Eyelet trim frays at the cut ends, so I fold each end under twice before stitching it down.
3. DIY Alice Costume From Closet Basics

You don't need a single specialty piece for this. A light blue fit-and-flare dress with a white kitchen apron works, or a blue blouse tucked into a matching A-line skirt. If the apron has no proper bow, tie a wide white ribbon round the waist and let that do it. White crew socks with black flats, loafers or Mary Janes. Curl your own hair and add a black headband, or put temporary blonde colour on a washable wig. Pink blush, mascara and a soft berry lip. For the prop, I rinse out a small plastic bottle, tie ribbon round the neck and hang a handwritten “Drink Me” tag from it. Everything except the tag goes back in the wardrobe afterward.
4. Last-Minute Alice Costume With Blue Skirt

Short on time? Use separates that already have the Alice shape. Tuck a plain white puff-sleeve blouse into a light blue skater skirt and add a white apron, or tie a square of white fabric round your waist with ribbon. A skater skirt gives you the flare without any petticoat. White tights and black ballet flats, a black ribbon as a headband over any hair texture, mascara, rosy blush and pink balm. Write a big “This Way” sign and back it with light cardboard, or swap it for a teacup-shaped bag when you need your hands free. One evening is honestly enough to pull it together.
5. Modern Alice Costume With Pleated Dress

Crisp pleats make Alice look current. Look for a powder blue mini or knee-length dress with a defined waist, neat pleats and small puff sleeves, and replace the pinafore with a cropped white vest or a narrow apron. Pleats only stay sharp if they're pressed, so I steam them with a damp cloth the day before and hang the dress by the waist. Opaque white tights with black platform Mary Janes or loafers. A smooth shoulder-length blowout and a slim black velvet headband. Polished makeup: defined brows, pale blue liner, pink blush and a satin lipstick. A structured white bag with a removable key charm and small clock earrings point to the story without turning it into fancy dress.
6. Gothic Alice Costume With Black Lace

Gothic Alice keeps the storybook shape and trades the cheerful colours for contrast. Begin with a midnight blue dress with black lace sleeves, a fitted waist and a full knee-length skirt, and add a black pinafore edged in white piping or lace. Black-and-white striped tights with sturdy ankle boots let you walk all night. A blonde wig in tousled waves with a black velvet bow. Smoky gray shadow, defined liner, cool pink blush and berry lips, nothing frightening. Carry an ornate key, a dark blue teacup or a faux book with a checkerboard cover. Black lace over blue can disappear in dim light, so I'd choose a white edge on the pinafore to keep the outline readable.
7. Glam Alice Costume With Satin Dress

Satin makes this the party Alice. Wear an icy blue satin dress with puff sleeves, a fitted waist and a full midi skirt, with a white organza apron trimmed in pearls and a statement bow behind. Satin shows every crease and water mark, so press it on a low heat through a cloth and keep drinks at arm's length. Sheer white tights and black block-heel Mary Janes you can walk in. A glossy blonde wig in big curls with a rhinestone headband, champagne shadow, defined lashes, pink blush and glossy rose lips. A mini silver teapot or a book-shaped bag, pearl earrings and a key necklace. Keep the sparkle on the apron and accessories so the blue and white stay in charge.
8. Cute Alice Costume With Tulle Skirt

Tulle turns Alice cute and bouncy. Pair a light blue puff-sleeve top or fitted bodysuit with a layered blue tulle skirt that ends near the knee, then tie a white apron over it with a big bow at the back. Tulle scratches bare legs, so if I make the skirt I add a soft lining layer closest to the body. White knee socks, cushioned Mary Jane flats, soft curls and a wide black bow headband. Pink blush, fluttery mascara, a touch of blue shadow and gloss. Carry a plush rabbit or teacup purse, clip small bows to the shoes, and wear fitted shorts underneath for active parties.
9. Adult Alice Costume With Teacup Prop

The grown-up version leans on the tea party and on tailoring. Choose a light blue dress with elbow sleeves, a defined waist and a skirt that sits just around the knee, layer a crisp white apron over it, and add white tights with low black pumps. A shoulder-length blonde wig in smooth waves and a black satin headband. Neutral base, a soft wing of liner, pink blush and rose lipstick. The oversized teacup is painted foam, or use a teacup-shaped bag if you want somewhere for your phone. Spoon earrings or a tiny saucer brooch are fun details. For cooler venues, a fitted blue cardigan keeps the colours right.
10. Kids Alice Costume With Comfortable Flats

For a child, comfort has to come before accuracy. Start with a soft blue cotton dress with puff sleeves, a stretchy waist and a knee-length skirt. I fasten the apron with snaps or hook-and-loop tape instead of ties, because ties come undone in the playground and little fingers can't redo a bow. White leggings move better than tights, and cushioned flats or slip-on sneakers make the walk easier. Natural hair with a black headband is plenty; only add a wig if the child actually likes it. Makeup is optional, a little blush and lip balm at most. A plush rabbit or a foam key, washable fabrics and a hem that clears the ground.
11. Teen Alice Costume With Sneakers

Teens usually want to look like themselves first and Alice second, and this version allows that. A pale blue skater dress with a cropped white apron or sleeveless pinafore, white crew socks and black canvas sneakers in place of Mary Janes. Loose waves in any colour, with a narrow black headband to make the reference clear. Tinted moisturiser, mascara, light pink blush and gloss. A crossbody bag with removable clock, key and card charms, and a refillable water bottle with a “Drink Me” tag doubles as the prop. Fitted shorts under the skirt make it school-event friendly.
12. Plus Size Alice Costume With Fit-And-Flare Dress

A well-cut fit-and-flare dress gives a plus size Alice balance and room to move. Look for a light blue style with a supportive bodice, a softly gathered skirt and sleeves you can lift your arms in. I'd make the apron ties extra long so you can set the bow wherever it sits best, high on the waist or at the natural waist. Opaque white tights or leggings with wide-fit Mary Janes, loafers or ankle-strap flats. A blonde wig in soft curls, or a velvet headband on your own hair. Rosy blush, defined lashes and pink lipstick. Petticoat shorts add volume without a stiff petticoat, and a light key or teapot bag keeps your hands free.
13. Maternity Alice Costume With Empire-Waist Dress

An empire waist is the kindest shape for a maternity Alice. Choose a soft light blue dress that gathers under the bust and falls freely over the bump, then set the apron above the natural waist with long ribbon ties and a flexible bib. I cut the apron skirt a little wider than usual so it drapes over the bump rather than pulling across it. White maternity leggings and cushioned flats, natural hair or a light wig with a padded headband. Gentle makeup: pink blush, mascara and a hydrating rose lip colour. A small plush rabbit or empty decorative bottle, plus a blue cardigan for warmth. Leave out corsetry, stiff petticoats and heavy accessories entirely.
14. Modest Alice Costume With Midi Dress

Extra coverage doesn't cost Alice anything. A light blue midi with a high neckline, long puff sleeves and a comfortably fitted waist goes under a long white pinafore that falls several inches below the knee. Opaque white tights with black loafers, Mary Janes or low ankle boots. Smooth waves or a black ribbon headband over your own style. Peach blush, brown liner, mascara and a muted pink lip. Carry a closed storybook, a key or a small rabbit bag, and add lace cuffs or a neat collar. With a long skirt, check the width as well as the length; a narrow midi stops you climbing steps or sitting cross-legged at a group activity.
15. Warm Weather Alice Costume With Cotton Dress

On a hot day, fabric choice is everything. A pale blue cotton sundress with short puff sleeves and a loose A-line skirt breathes, and a thin cotton voile apron weighs almost nothing. Polyester costume aprons trap heat, which is why I'd skip the packaged ones here. White ankle socks with cushioned flats or low sneakers. A low ponytail or loose braid with a black ribbon headband instead of a wig. Tinted sunscreen, waterproof mascara, cream blush and tinted balm. A folding fan tied with blue ribbon is both prop and air conditioning. Leave out petticoats, wigs and layered tights altogether.
16. Cold Weather Alice Costume With Blue Coat

Cold evenings call for layers that keep the white showing. Start with a blue long-sleeve dress and white apron, then add a fitted powder blue coat cut short enough, or open enough, that the apron bow or white collar stays visible. Thermal white tights with black lace-up ankle boots or weather-resistant Mary Janes. A blonde wig under a black bow headband, or the headband over your own hair. Rosy cheeks, soft blue-gray shadow, mascara and berry-pink lips. White knit gloves and a clock-print scarf add warmth and theme at once. A teapot crossbody beats a hand-held prop with cold fingers. If it's really cold, a thermal top goes under the dress, invisible.
17. Victorian Alice Costume With High-Neck Dress

A high neck and a long skirt pull Alice back into the Victorian era. Choose a muted blue cotton or lightweight wool dress with long sleeves, a lace-trimmed collar, a fitted bodice and a full calf-length skirt, then add an ivory pinafore and a modest petticoat. Cream stockings and black button-style ankle boots. Long loose waves held back with black ribbon, not a plastic band. Matte skin, rosy cheeks, brown mascara and a natural rose lip. A cloth-bound book, a light key, a cameo brooch, lace gloves and a drawstring pouch fill in the period. Wool and petticoat together get warm indoors, so I'd pick cotton if you'll be inside for hours.
18. Edwardian Alice Costume With Lace Blouse

The Edwardian version is built from a blouse and a long skirt rather than a dress. Tuck an ivory high-collar lace blouse with puffed shoulders into a dusty blue ankle-length skirt and tie a narrow embroidered white apron in a tidy bow. Cream tights and low-heeled lace-up boots. A soft rolled updo with curled pieces round the face and a black velvet ribbon. Natural eyes, pink cheeks and muted berry lips. A mini book, a brass-coloured key or a small tea pouch, with pearl studs and lace cuffs. It reads older than the classic blue dress, but the apron and ribbon still say Alice at once. An ankle-length skirt needs a walking hem, so keep it just clear of your shoe.
19. Storybook Alice Costume With Illustrated Apron

Here the white apron becomes a page from the book. Start with a simple sky blue puff-sleeve dress and a full white pinafore, then draw or appliqué keys, teacups, roses, clocks and signposts onto it, keeping the arrangement spaced out so the blue and white still read. Fabric markers need heat-setting with an iron before they're washable, which I do as soon as the drawing is dry. White knee socks and black Mary Jane flats. A blonde bob wig with curved ends and a black ribbon. Rosy blush, pale blue shadow, mascara and pink lips. An oversized foam key or a blank book with a made-up title, plus matching illustrated cuffs if you're keen.
20. Looking Glass Alice Costume With Silver Details

Silver trim takes Alice through the looking glass. Wear a pale blue satin or velvet dress with a white apron edged in narrow silver ribbon, white tights and black Mary Janes with removable metallic bows. Metallic ribbon is stiff and frays fast, so I seal the ends with a lighter flame or fray stopper before stitching. A blonde wig in sleek waves and a silver-trimmed headband. Pearl shadow, soft liner, pink blush and gloss. A plastic-framed hand mirror or a mirrored acrylic key, silver clock earrings and a tiny chess-piece pendant. Reflective fabric squares on the apron pockets catch the light; real glass props stay at home.
21. Tea Party Alice Costume With Teapot Bag

This one builds the whole look around tableware. Choose a cornflower blue fit-and-flare dress with a white Peter Pan collar and short puff sleeves, and add a white half-apron embroidered with tiny cups or saucers. A few simple stitched outlines read well; I'd keep the embroidery to the hem so it doesn't crowd the waist. White tights, black bow-front flats, bouncy curls and a wide black headband. Soft blue shadow, long lashes, pink blush and rose lipstick. A teapot handbag, spoon earrings and a napkin folded into the apron pocket. Leave the props empty so they stay light for a themed lunch or an indoor party.
22. Rabbit Hole Alice Costume With Clock Accessories

Clocks bring in the hurry of the fall down the rabbit hole. Start with the classic blue dress and white apron and attach removable clock appliqués round the apron hem. White-and-black striped tights and sturdy Mary Janes. A tousled blonde wig with a slightly crooked bow suggests a tumble without looking messy. Fresh makeup with pink cheeks, soft liner and a little pale shimmer at the inner corners for a wide-eyed look. An oversized foam pocket watch or clock-shaped bag, plus a small brown satchel for a key and folded map. I sew clock faces on with a running stitch round the edge; glued felt circles curl up at the rim after an hour.
23. Drink Me Alice Costume With Bottle Prop

The bottle is the star of this one, so make it big enough to read across a room. Wear a light blue knee-length dress with puff sleeves, a fitted white pinafore, white knee socks and black Mary Janes. Shoulder-length curls under a black satin headband. Pale blue shadow, rosy blush, mascara and pink lipstick. For the prop, use a clean plastic bottle, coloured ribbon and a large handwritten “Drink Me” tag, left empty or filled with something light. I letter the tag on card stock with a thick marker and laminate it with clear packing tape so a spilled drink doesn't smear it. A blue bow on the bottle ties it to the dress.
24. Eat Me Alice Costume With Cookie Bag

A cookie bag gives this Alice a sweet, playful prop. Begin with a powder blue dress and a white apron with a scalloped edge, then add white tights and ankle-strap flats. Blonde hair or a softly curled wig under a black velvet headband. Rosy cheeks, fluttery lashes, pale blue shadow and pink gloss. The bag is round and labelled “Eat Me” in fabric paint or felt letters. On a polyester bag felt letters peel off with glue alone, so I stitch them or switch to fabric paint. Faux cookies in a small gingham-lined basket work too, and cookie charms can hang from the apron ties. Keep any real snacks wrapped and labelled for guests with allergies.
25. Playing Card Alice Costume With Red Details

Red card suits give the classic outfit more punch. Decorate a white apron on a light blue dress with removable red heart and suit appliqués, then add white tights with small red diamonds and black Mary Janes with red bows. A blonde wig in smooth curls with one card-shaped decoration on the headband. Black liner, rosy cheeks and a red-pink lip. Carry a fan of oversized handmade cards or a card-shaped purse, and add a red waistband to connect the accents. I'd make the suits large and few; five big hearts read from across a room, twenty small ones turn to noise.
26. Cheshire-Inspired Alice Costume With Striped Tights

This Alice has clearly spent some time with the cat. Keep the blue dress and white apron and add pink-and-purple striped tights underneath, with black ankle boots or Mary Janes. A blonde wig in loose waves and a black headband with small removable striped bows instead of ears. Pink and lavender shadow, defined lashes, rosy cheeks and a curved berry smile kept natural. Drape a striped tail-shaped scarf over one arm or pin it to a crossbody bag, and add pink piping to the apron pockets. If you sew the tail, stuff it lightly with fibrefill; a firm tail drags and bumps furniture.
27. White Rabbit-Inspired Alice Costume With Red Blazer

A fitted red blazer brings the White Rabbit's formality into Alice's outfit. Layer it over a pale blue dress and short white apron, worn open so the bib and blue skirt stay in view. White tights and lace-up ankle boots or Mary Janes. A blonde bob wig with a black headband and a small white bow. Pink blush, defined eyes and rose lips. Carry an oversized lightweight pocket watch and pin a decorative chain to the blazer pocket; white gloves finish it without any ears. A thrifted blazer usually fits the bill, and I'd take in the waist with two darts if it boxes out over the full skirt.
28. Mad Tea Party Alice Costume With Mini Hat

The mini hat swaps Alice's plain headband for a nod to the mad tea party. Wear a bright blue dress, a white ruffled apron, white-and-blue striped tights and block-heel Mary Janes. Big curls, with a small tilted hat clipped or sewn onto the black headband. Trim the hat with ribbon, paper teacups, faux flowers and a little price tag. Pale blue shadow, pink cheeks, berry lips and a touch of shimmer. A mismatched cup and saucer held together with removable adhesive, or a teacup bag. Mini hats tip forward as the night goes on, so I add a thin elastic that runs under the hair at the back.
29. Queen-Inspired Alice Costume With Heart Apron

Hearts give Alice a royal red twist. Start with a sapphire or powder blue dress with puff sleeves and a full skirt, and add a white apron with one large red heart on the bib and smaller ones round the hem. White tights and Mary Janes with red straps or bows. Neat curls under a black velvet headband topped with a tiny heart crown. Winged liner, rosy blush and a rich red-pink lip. A red rose, a heart bag or a light tray of faux tarts, and a red sash at the waist. I cut the big heart by folding paper in half so both sides match, then trace it onto red felt or cotton. Keep the crown small so she stays Alice rather than becoming the Queen.
30. Floral Alice Costume With Flower Crown

Garden colours suit a daytime Alice best. Wear a sky blue cotton dress with a white apron decorated with fabric daisies, pansies and roses. Small silk-flower heads pulled off their stems stitch on easily with a cross stitch through the centre. White ankle socks and black flats with floral clips. Loose waves with a delicate flower crown over a narrow black headband. Lavender shadow, peach blush, mascara and pink lipstick. A small plastic watering can or a white basket of faux flowers. Floral wrist cuffs stand in for gloves in warm weather, and an airy arrangement keeps the blue and white visible.
31. Butterfly Garden Alice Costume With Blue Wings

Wings turn Alice into a garden visitor while the outfit stays hers. Begin with a pale blue skater dress and a short white apron, then add sheer blue-and-white wings on comfortable shoulder straps, narrow enough for doorways. I'd choose wings with a flexible frame and check the wire ends are capped, since a bare end snags tights and skin. White tights and black flats with butterfly clips. A blonde wig in flowing waves and a black ribbon. Iridescent blue shadow, defined lashes, peach-pink blush and gloss. A flower basket or butterfly bag, and a few removable blue appliqués on the apron hem to link the wings to the dress.
32. Patchwork Alice Costume With Mixed Prints

Patchwork gives Alice a handmade, slightly mismatched look that suits the tea party. Make the blue dress from gingham, dots, stripes and plain cotton, or tack temporary panels onto a dress you own. A white apron with contrasting blue pockets and visible decorative stitching. One white sock, one blue-striped sock, matching black lace-ups. A tousled wig and a patchwork bow headband. Pink blush, soft blue liner, mascara and berry lips. A fabric teapot bag from leftover scraps or a stuffed cloth key. Pre-wash all the cottons together before cutting; mixed fabrics shrink at different rates and pucker the seams later. Limit the palette to blue, white, black and a touch of pink.
33. Steampunk Alice Costume With Goggles

Steampunk Alice adds machinery without losing the storybook shape. Wear a dusty blue high-low dress over an ivory blouse with a fitted white or tan waist apron. Striped cream tights and brown lace-up ankle boots with low heels. Loose curls, with brass-coloured goggles resting on a black mini top hat or wide headband. Warm neutral shadow, soft liner, rosy cheeks and muted red lips. A clockwork-style key or a satchel with faux gears and clock faces, plus fingerless lace gloves and a pocket-watch chain. Make the metal pieces from foam or plastic. Foam gears painted with a metallic craft paint over a black base look convincingly old and weigh next to nothing.
34. Cottagecore Alice Costume With Gingham Dress

Blue gingham gives Alice a cottagecore softness. Choose a midi with puff sleeves, a square neckline and a gathered skirt, and tie a cream linen apron over it with a wide bow. White ribbed socks with black or brown Mary Jane flats. Loose braids with black velvet ribbon round the crown. Freckles, peach blush, brown mascara and a rosy tint. A woven basket with faux daisies, a cloth-bound book and a key, plus lace-trimmed pockets and a removable white collar. Linen wrinkles as soon as you sit, which actually suits this look, so I don't fight it. Keep the basket light if you're carrying it all day.
35. Dark Academia Alice Costume With Navy Pinafore

A navy pinafore makes a quieter, scholarly Alice. Layer a deep blue sleeveless pinafore dress over an ivory puff-sleeve blouse with a rounded collar, and add a short white apron panel or waist sash to keep the classic white. Cream knee socks with leather-look loafers or Oxfords. Smooth waves and a black velvet headband. Brown liner, muted rose blush and berry stain. A stack of faux books tied with ribbon and a key bookmark, with a small clock brooch on the collar. This is the one I'd suggest if you want something that also works as a regular autumn outfit.
36. Pastel Alice Costume With Lavender Accents

Lavender softens the usual palette. Wear a powder blue dress with a lilac waistband and a white organza apron trimmed in lavender ribbon. Pale lavender tights or white knee socks with lilac bows, then black Mary Jane flats. A platinum wig in soft curls under a lavender-trimmed black headband. Pastel blue and purple shadow, pink blush, mascara and glossy rose lips. A lilac teacup bag or a small clear bottle tied with pastel ribbon, plus tiny bows on the apron pockets. Organza is slippery to cut; I pin it between sheets of tissue paper so it stays still under the scissors. Stick to two pastels rather than all of them.
37. Black And White Alice Costume With Monochrome Dress

Black and white turn the Alice silhouette graphic. Choose a white puff-sleeve dress with black piping, or a black dress under a crisp white pinafore. Black-and-white striped tights and polished Mary Janes. A platinum or silver-blonde blunt bob with a wide black bow. Matte foundation, charcoal liner, gray shadow, cool pink blush and muted berry lips. A black teacup, white key or checkerboard bag, with black buttons and white lace cuffs. Use one print only, either the stripe or the checkerboard; both together fight. White piping on black is easy to add with ready-made bias binding folded over the seam.
38. Pink Alice Costume With Rose Pinafore

Swapping blue for pink keeps the shape and changes the mood. A blush pink puff-sleeve dress with a full knee-length skirt goes under a white pinafore with red and pink fabric roses on the pockets. White tights and black Mary Janes with removable pink bows. Soft curled layers held by a headband with one small rose. Pink shadow, defined lashes, bright blush and a satin lipstick. A mini rose teapot or a heart bag, and a pale blue ribbon at the waist as a quiet nod to the original. Fabric roses get heavy on a thin apron, so I keep them to the pockets and back the pocket with interfacing.
39. Giant Bow Alice Costume With Oversized Details

Oversized accessories make Alice look as though she has just shrunk. Start with the classic blue dress, white apron, white tights and black flats, then add a dramatically large black bow on a comfortable headband. A giant foam key, an extra-large teacup or a huge light cookie. Doll-like makeup: rosy cheeks, pale blue shadow, mascara and glossy pink lips. Enlarged apron pockets and broad ribbon ties carry the scale through. A giant bow needs structure, so I fuse stiff interfacing inside the loops or it flops by the second hour. Pick one or two big props, not five.
40. Tiny Alice Costume With Key Prop

This one tells the small-door part of the story. Wear a pale blue dress with a crisp white apron, white knee socks and black Mary Janes. A blonde bob with curved ends and a neat black ribbon. Pink blush, a little blue shadow, mascara and rose lips. Carry a big gold foam key and a small door-shaped crossbody bag with a tiny knob, and attach miniature paper signs, bottles and teacups to the apron pockets so they look tiny next to the key. A checkerboard print on the bag adds the floor. I sew the minis on with a few stitches through a hole at the top, because tiny glued pieces pop off the first time you sit down.
Stains, Blue Dye and a White Apron
White aprons pick up everything at a party, and a new blue dress can bleed into one the first time it gets damp. I wash any blue cotton on its own once before the event, and if the water runs blue I add a dye catcher sheet when it goes in with the white.
- Pre-treat the apron with a spray starch; a starched surface lets spills sit on top long enough to blot off.
- Carry a stain pen and blot from the outside of the mark inward rather than rubbing.
- Red drinks and berry lipstick are the usual culprits, so keep the cup in the hand away from the bib.
- Store the pinafore rolled, not folded, so the bib doesn't set with a crease across it.
Headbands and wigs that stay put
A wide black headband slides back on fine, straight wigs. I wrap the ends with a strip of velvet ribbon or a little fabric tape so they grip, and pin a bobby pin through the wig cap behind each ear. On children, a fabric-covered elastic band is gentler than a hard plastic one and stays on through running.
Blue Dress, White Apron, Then Your Twist
Every one of these starts from the same base: a blue dress, a white apron, a black headband, blonde hair, white socks and dark shoes. After that, clocks, keys, teacups, cards, flowers, stripes or giant props make it yours. Change the dress length, fabric, shoes and layers for the age, body, weather and event, and pay as much attention to how it's made as how it looks. Firm hems, secure apron ties and a headband that doesn't pinch matter more than any accessory if you'll be wearing it for hours. Traditional or handmade, the one I'd sew first is the classic with a properly full pinafore bow.
