Pinocchio is one of the easiest storybook characters to spot from across a street, because his colors do the work: yellow hat and shirt, red shorts, a blue bow tie, white gloves, brown shoes and that long wooden nose. Below are thirty ways to wear him, from the classic kid's version to adult, modern, adaptive, couple, family and even dog costumes. Nearly all of them come together from everyday clothes, felt, cardboard, face paint and thrift finds, and I've given each one its clothing, hair, makeup, props and shoes. The two pieces I'd spend real time on are the hat and the nose, so I walk through both.

Sewing a Pointed Felt Hat That Doesn't Flop
The hat is the piece that tells people who you are, and most homemade ones sag by the second hour. A few construction choices fix that.
- Measure around the head where the hat will sit and add about a finger's width of ease, more if a bun, wig or thick hair goes underneath.
- Use stiffened felt, or ordinary felt fused to heavy interfacing. Plain craft felt is too soft to hold a point.
- Cut the crown as two curved side panels sewn together with a slightly rounded tip. That gives the Alpine shape better than a straight witch cone.
- Cut the brim as a ring, clip the inner edge so it spreads, and stitch it to the crown. Turn the brim up a little at the back.
- Wrap a blue ribbon band where crown meets brim and slide the red feather behind it on one side instead of gluing the quill, so a bent feather can be swapped.
- Add hat elastic under the chin for kids, or sew a small wig comb inside the front edge for adults.
I always try the hat on with the hair done the way it will be on the night. A bun or a wig can change the fit by a whole size, and it's far easier to adjust the band at home than with safety pins on the doorstep.
1. Classic Pinocchio Costume For Kids

This is the version most people picture: a bright yellow short-sleeve shirt, red suspender shorts and a cropped black vest, with a big blue felt bow tie, white gloves, white knee socks and comfortable brown loafers. The pointed hat comes from stiff felt or cardstock with a blue band and one soft red feather. For a child I'd use felt, because cardstock creases the first time it gets sat on. A short tan cardstock nose on thin elastic is plenty. Tuck their hair under the hat, dot a few puppet joints on the cheeks and chin in peach and brown face paint, and give them a storybook or painted wooden apple to carry.
2. Adult Pinocchio Costume With Red Shorts

An adult can wear the traditional costume without it looking like a child's outfit scaled up, and fit is what does it. Choose tailored red shorts with red suspenders, a fitted yellow button-up shirt and a structured black vest with gold trim. I'd skip shiny costume satin for the shirt and use cotton, which holds a crisp collar all night. A large blue bow tie, white knee socks and polished brown lace-ups refine it. Top it with a yellow fedora or a pointed felt hat with blue ribbon and a red feather, and keep short dark hair in a tidy side part. Warm foundation, faint cheek hinges and a slim cardboard nose painted in wood tones finish the face. A small marionette control bar with no strings makes a theatrical prop that won't tangle.
3. Women’s Pinocchio Costume With Red Skirt

Swapping the shorts for a knee-length red circle skirt with matching suspenders gives a lighter take that's easy to move in. Tuck in a fitted yellow blouse, layer a short black vest edged in yellow ribbon, and tie a generous blue bow at the neck. White knee socks and brown Mary Jane flats keep it storybook. A circle skirt flares nicely when you turn and rides up when you sit, so I'd wear bike shorts underneath. Dark hair works smooth in a bob, low bun or tucked-under shape below a small yellow hat with a red feather. Rosy cheeks and fine brown lines at the jaw suggest the puppet, with white gloves and a craft-foam nose on clear elastic.
4. Modern Pinocchio Costume With Overalls

Red short overalls give Pinocchio a casual update you can walk in all evening. Layer them over a mustard-yellow T-shirt with a slim cropped black vest or sleeveless cardigan, and use a blue neck scarf in place of the oversized bow. White crew socks and clean brown sneakers handle the walking. A mustard beanie with blue ribbon and a removable red felt feather replaces the pointed hat; I sew the feather onto a brooch back so it comes off before the beanie goes in the wash. Bronzed makeup, peach blush, wood-grain lines at the wrists and knees, a small rounded foam nose and white fingerless gloves keep the character. A book-shaped crossbody bag holds your phone.
5. No-Sew Pinocchio Costume

No sewing machine needed for this one. Start with red shorts, a yellow polo and a plain black vest from your closet or a thrift store, then pin wide red ribbon suspenders inside the waistband with safety pins. Cut the blue bow tie, white collar, yellow buttons and vest trim from felt and attach them with removable fabric tape. That tape grips well on smooth cotton and poorly on fuzzy knits, so I press each piece down hard and check them again before leaving. A yellow paper hat with blue ribbon and a craft feather, natural hair, rosy cheeks and a couple of brown-liner hinges near the mouth are enough. Add white gloves, white socks, brown slip-ons and a rolled cardstock nose on skin-safe elastic.
6. DIY Pinocchio Costume From Thrifted Clothes

Thrifting suits this character, because every piece is a plain color you can wear again. Look for a yellow shirt, red shorts, a black vest, red suspenders, white gloves and brown shoes; oversized finds adjust with rolled sleeves, a belt or safety pins hidden inside. An old blue scarf makes the bow. Cover a secondhand hat in yellow felt with blue ribbon and a red feather. If the felt has some wool in it, a little steam helps it mold to the crown, while acrylic craft felt barely shapes, so I cut that into panels instead. Smooth the hair back, draw wooden seams near the temples, elbows and knees in brown liner, and make the nose from a painted paper cone on elastic. A cereal-box book painted like wood costs nothing.
7. Last-Minute Pinocchio Costume From Your Closet

With a party a few hours away, think in color and skip construction. Any yellow top with red shorts or pants, black suspenders or an open black vest, and a blue scarf tied into a big bow at the neck get you most of the way. White winter gloves, tall white socks and brown sneakers fill in the rest. Fold yellow cardstock into a pointed cap, wrap blue tape around the base and tape on a red paper feather. Side-part dark hair and add round blush cheeks. Roll tan paper into a short cone for the nose, and I do mean short: a long paper nose crumples the first time you turn your head into someone. A paperback storybook is your prop.
8. Wooden Puppet Pinocchio Costume With Face Paint

Wood-grain makeup is what turns the familiar outfit into a proper puppet. The clothes are a yellow blouse, red suspender shorts, a fitted black vest, white gloves, long white socks, brown ankle boots, a blue bow tie and a pointed yellow hat with a red feather. Patch-test your face paint, cover exposed skin with a light tan base, then add grain along the forehead, cheeks, neck, elbows and knees. I paint the grain with a thin brush in two browns, one warm and one darker, and let the lines wobble, because perfectly straight stripes look like a barcode rather than wood. Keep the circular joints small so the face stays friendly. Tuck hair under the hat, wear a short foam nose, and tie loose ribbons at the wrists as strings.
9. Long Nose Pinocchio Costume

Here the growing nose is the whole joke, so build it with care. The clothes stay classic: yellow collared shirt, red knee-length shorts, red suspenders, a black vest with yellow edging, a bold blue bow tie, white gloves, white socks and flat brown shoes. Make the extra-long nose from craft foam or rolled cardstock and paint it in several soft browns. Length adds leverage, so a long nose drags on its elastic and tips forward. I add a second strap over the top of the head, hidden under the yellow feathered hat, and check that the wearer can still see their feet. Keep the hair short or slicked back, add rosy cheeks and small puppet joints, and carry a storybook with no sign so the nose speaks for itself.
10. Real Boy Pinocchio Costume

This gentler version shows Pinocchio after he becomes a real boy, so leave out the painted joints and wood texture. Use a yellow shirt, neatly tailored red shorts and red suspenders with the black vest, oversized blue bow, white socks and brown lace-ups. Go bare-handed, since the white gloves are part of what makes him read as a puppet. A yellow hat with a blue band and red feather sits over softly combed dark hair, with peach blush and lightly defined brows. I like a short removable nose carried in the hand here, to show the change. A schoolbook, satchel or carved-heart accessory ends the story on the right note.
11. Vintage Storybook Pinocchio Costume

Muted colors make this look like an old illustrated storybook instead of the cartoon. Start with a mustard linen shirt, brick-red knee breeches, burgundy suspenders and a charcoal wool vest, then add an aged blue cotton bow, cream knee socks and scuffed brown lace-up boots. The hat is soft mustard felt with faded blue ribbon and a rust-red feather. To age bright cotton or linen, I soak it in strong tea and let it dry crumpled, which knocks the brightness back without looking dirty. A slightly tousled crop, matte skin, warm blush and fine sepia lines at the cheeks and wrists suit the period. A short papier-mâché nose painted like worn wood looks far more right than shiny plastic, and an antique-style blank book or small wooden toy is the prop.
12. Rustic Pinocchio Costume With Lederhosen

This rustic version suits outdoor festivals, school events and cooler nights. Layer a golden-yellow collarless shirt under red-brown lederhosen or suspender shorts with decorative stitching, then add a dark brown vest, a large faded-blue bow tie, cream socks and sturdy brown walking shoes. A mustard Alpine-style hat with a blue band and a soft red feather carries the headpiece, and that shape is actually close to the hat the character wears in the classic film. Keep the hair natural and a bit messy. Tan makeup with restrained grain along the jaw and hands, plus a medium foam nose, finish the face. White gloves can go in a pocket once they get in the way, and a canvas satchel with a carved-wood-style toy suits the outfit.
13. Stage Pinocchio Costume With Puppet Strings

On a stage, everything has to read from the back row. Wear bright red suspender shorts over a saturated yellow shirt and a structured black vest with thick gold edging, plus an oversized royal-blue bow, crisp white gloves, tall white socks and brown character shoes. Build the hat from firm felt so it keeps its shape under hot lights, with a blue band and a large red feather. Stage makeup can go heavier than street makeup: stronger cheeks, brows and joint lines over a smooth dark crop. For the strings, run loose ribbons from shoulders and wrists to a light control bar held by another performer. I attach each ribbon with a small square of hook-and-loop so it breaks away instantly if anyone trips or turns the wrong way.
14. Toddler Pinocchio Costume

With a toddler, comfort decides whether the costume stays on longer than ten minutes. Use a yellow cotton bodysuit under stretchy red overall shorts with big decorative yellow buttons, a soft black fleece vest, and a blue fabric bow that fastens with snaps instead of tying at the neck. White socks and flexible brown sneakers with hook-and-loop closures let them run. A padded yellow cap with a blue band and fabric feather beats stiff cardstock, which pokes and gets pulled off within minutes. Leave their hair loose underneath and use only a little washable pink on the cheeks. A tiny felt nose on soft elastic, or one stitched to the hat brim, is plenty, and a plush storybook toy makes a safe prop.
15. Baby Pinocchio Costume With Onesie

For a baby, think of one cozy outfit rather than a costume of parts. Start with a long-sleeve yellow onesie, pull soft red suspender bloomers over it, add two large yellow felt circles on the front and a light black bib cut like a vest. I sew those felt circles on rather than taping them, since a baby will chew anything that lifts at the edge. A flat blue felt bow on a snap keeps the neck clear, and white tights with soft brown crib shoes keep legs warm. A stretchy yellow beanie with a blue ribbon band and padded red feather goes on top. Skip face paint and any wearable nose; a soft tan plush cone nearby for supervised photos and a cloth book are all you need.
16. Teen Pinocchio Costume With Red Jeans

Teens can nod to the character without wearing short pants. Pair high-waisted red jeans with a fitted yellow T-shirt, red suspenders and a cropped black denim vest, and tie a royal-blue bandanna into a loose bow at the collar. White high-tops with brown laces stand in for dress shoes. A yellow baseball cap gets a blue ribbon band and a removable red felt feather; I'd stitch the ribbon down only at the back seam so it lifts off cleanly afterward. Dark hair can be short, braided, curly or tucked under the cap. Fresh skin, rosy cream blush and thin brown joint lines near the jaw keep it current. A small foam nose for photos and a book-shaped mini backpack round it out.
17. Plus Size Pinocchio Costume

For a plus size version, build from pieces that already fit you well instead of clingy costume fabric. A flowing yellow blouse or knit top goes with red tailored shorts, culottes or ankle-length pants, adjustable red suspenders and an open black vest that hangs without pulling. Suspenders do a lot here: they draw a clean vertical line and stop the waistband from rolling, so I'd choose wide ones with sturdy clips. A large blue bow near the face gives a clear focal point. White socks or tights with cushioned brown loafers or ankle boots, a yellow hat with blue ribbon and a flexible feather, rosy blush, soft brown liner, optional grain accents, a light foam nose, white stretch gloves and a storybook crossbody bag finish it.
18. Summer Pinocchio Costume

In hot weather, fewer and lighter layers are the whole plan. Wear a sleeveless yellow cotton top with loose red suspender shorts and a thin black linen vest left open, and make the blue bow from soft cotton. Felt traps heat right at the throat, which is where you notice it most. White ankle socks and ventilated brown canvas sneakers keep feet cool at outdoor parties. Sew the pointed hat from a breathable fabric with a narrow blue band and a small red feather, and pull your hair off your neck. Keep makeup to rosy cheeks and waterproof brown joint lines. A short hollow foam nose keeps breathing easy, and a small fan disguised as a storybook is a clever prop.
19. Winter Pinocchio Costume

Cold-weather trick-or-treating is easier when the warm layers are already in his colors. Start with a yellow thermal top and red fleece-lined pants, or suspender shorts over thick white tights, then add a black cardigan or insulated vest and an oversized blue knitted bow. Brown weatherproof boots keep feet dry and still match. Swap thin costume gloves for white knit ones, and shape a yellow wool cap with felt, blue ribbon and a soft red feather to keep ears warm. Elastic rubs on cold skin, so I attach the small nose to the hat brim instead. Weather-resistant blush and brown liner are enough. A red or blue coat over the top doesn't spoil anything, since it stays in the palette.
20. School-Friendly Pinocchio Costume

Book character day means a full school day in costume, so it has to survive a classroom and recess. Pair a yellow polo with red uniform-style shorts or pants, adjustable suspenders and a simple black knit vest. A small blue bow tie with a hook-and-loop fastening comes off quickly for PE. White crew socks and regular brown school shoes let them move normally. Decorate a soft yellow cap with a blue ribbon strip and a flat red felt feather, comb the hair neatly, and use washable cheek color only if the school allows makeup. I'd replace the long nose with a short foam one fixed to the cap brim, because a nose on elastic ends up in a pocket by mid-morning. A lightweight copy of the story or a book-shaped folder is the prop.
21. Sensory-Friendly Pinocchio Costume

A sensory-friendly version takes away scratchy trims, tight elastics and heavy accessories. Begin with a tag-free yellow cotton shirt and soft red joggers or shorts, with suspenders painted on in fabric paint. Add the black vest and blue bow as soft panels stitched flat to the shirt, so there's only one layer to put on. Let the child feel the finished shirt before the day: painted areas are stiffer than the surrounding fabric, and some kids notice that straight away. Smooth-toe white socks and familiar brown sneakers beat new shoes. A yellow cotton beanie with a flat blue band and fabric feather replaces the stiff hat. Keep their usual hairstyle, skip makeup if it bothers them, and show the nose on a handheld mask or as a padded detail on the hat. A soft cloth book is the prop.
22. Wheelchair-Friendly Pinocchio Costume

This adaptive costume makes the wheelchair part of a puppet-theater scene. The wearer dresses in a yellow top, red pants, a black vest, a blue bow tie, white gloves, secure brown shoes and a soft yellow hat with blue trim and a red feather. Comfortable hair, rosy cheeks, optional joint lines and a short foam nose fixed to the hat keep pressure off the face. Decorate the chair with light cardboard panels painted like a wooden stage, with loose decorative curtains and oversized clock shapes rather than strings. Leave the wheels, push rims, controls, brakes and sight lines completely clear. I attach every panel with hook-and-loop straps so it can come off in seconds, and fasten a small faux storybook to the side.
23. Maternity Pinocchio Costume

A stretchy red overall dress or soft red suspender skirt over a breathable yellow top makes a maternity Pinocchio that won't press on the bump. An open black vest frames the outfit without adding anything at the waist, and adjustable suspenders matter here, since the fit can change from week to week. Place a large blue bow near the collar, and add white tights or socks with supportive brown flats. The yellow hat with blue ribbon and a red feather is the most telling piece, so I'd put the effort there. Pink cheeks, defined brows and a few fine seam lines, a short removable paper or foam nose, white stretch gloves and a book-shaped crossbody bag keep both hands free.
24. Dog Pinocchio Costume

A pet costume should be light, never restrict movement, and only be worn while you're watching. Use a soft yellow dog shirt under a red harness decorated to look like suspenders with big yellow buttons, and add a flat black felt vest panel on the back that stays clear of the leash ring. A blue fabric bow sits on the harness, not around the neck. Skip makeup, shoes, gloves and anything on the dog's face. A tiny yellow hat with blue ribbon and a soft red feather on a headband is fine only if your dog already accepts headwear, and the nose can be a padded detail on the back. I try any costume on a pet for a few minutes at home first, and take it off the moment they scratch at it or freeze up.
25. Pinocchio And Geppetto Couple Costume

This warmhearted couple costume pairs the puppet with the woodcarver who made him. The puppet wears a yellow shirt, red suspender shorts, black vest, blue bow, white gloves, white socks, brown shoes, a yellow feathered hat, rosy puppet makeup and a light wooden nose. The woodcarver wears a cream button-up shirt, brown rolled trousers, a burgundy cardigan and a tan work apron with faux tools in secured pockets, plus gray hair, a brushed mustache, round glasses, tall socks and brown loafers. Gray hair spray tends to rub off on collars, so I'd go with a short gray wig. Carry a small unfinished wooden toy, not sharp equipment. Earth tones next to bright primaries tell the story on their own.
26. Pinocchio And Jiminy Cricket Duo Costume

The puppet-and-cricket pair suits siblings, friends or a parent and child. The puppet wears red suspender shorts, a yellow shirt, black vest, blue bow, white gloves, brown shoes and a yellow hat with a red feather, with pink cheeks, puppet joints and a short wooden-look nose. The cricket wears green pants, a pale yellow shirt, a teal tailcoat, white gloves and brown boots, with a small blue top hat with a yellow band and a closed umbrella to lean on. A tailcoat is easy to fake: I fold the front corners of an ordinary jacket back and pin them inside so it cuts away into tails. Keep green makeup to the cheeks and temples, and pin a handmade gold conscience badge securely to the coat.
27. Pinocchio And Blue Fairy Duo Costume

Pair the puppet's primary colors with an airy pale-blue fairy. The puppet wears the classic yellow shirt, red suspender shorts, black vest, blue bow tie, white gloves, white socks, brown shoes and feathered yellow hat, with rosy cheeks, joint makeup and a foam nose. The fairy wears a floor-length powder-blue dress with sheer sleeves, silver flats, translucent wings and a narrow silver headband, with her hair in soft waves or a low bun. Cool blue eye makeup, pearly shimmer and a small star accent suit her, along with a light silver wand tipped by a padded blue star. Floor-length means stairs and curbs, so I hem it to just clear the top of the shoe while she stands in her flats.
28. Pinocchio Family Costume For Four

A family of four can be the puppet, the woodcarver, the cricket and the Blue Fairy. The puppet takes the yellow shirt, red shorts, black vest, blue bow, white gloves, brown shoes, feathered hat and wooden nose. The woodcarver wears a cream shirt, rolled brown pants, a cardigan, an apron, gray hair, glasses and loafers. The cricket has green pants, a teal coat, a yellow vest, a blue top hat, gloves and boots, and the fairy wears a pale-blue dress, silver shoes, wings, shimmer and a star wand. Keep props soft and light, especially for the kids. I'd repeat one shade of blue across all four, in the bow, the hat band, the top hat and the dress, because that shared color is what makes four costumes look like one plan.
29. Pinocchio Group Costume With Storybook Characters

A bigger group can add the theatrical showman, the clever fox and his silent cat companion to the puppet, woodcarver, cricket and fairy. Give each person their full signature palette so nobody blurs together. The puppet wears red, yellow, black and blue with a long nose; the woodcarver an apron and earth tones; the cricket green with a blue top hat; the fairy a pale-blue dress, wings, silver shoes and a star wand. The showman wears burgundy trousers, a white shirt, a patterned vest, curly dark hair and boots. The fox wears rust-colored layers and a top hat, and the cat gray clothes, rounded ears, gentle face paint, gloves and comfortable shoes. Line up in story order for photos, and leave out real fur and frightening makeup.
30. Glam Pinocchio Costume With Sequins

Sequins and satin make the puppet party-ready without losing the storybook. Wear high-waisted red tailored shorts or trousers with a gold-yellow satin blouse and a fitted black sequin vest, red suspenders, an oversized blue satin bow, white gloves and metallic brown ankle boots. A small yellow fascinator-style hat with blue velvet ribbon, a red feather and a few clear crystals replaces the full hat. Sequin vests scratch the inner arm and snag satin sleeves, so I'd bind the armholes with soft bias tape or choose a vest with a plain fabric back. Glossy waves, a sleek bob or a low ponytail suit it. Luminous foundation, rosy blush, blue liner and precise brown joint lines, a foam nose dusted with bronze shimmer and a crystal-trimmed book clutch finish it.
A Wooden Nose That Stays Put
The nose is the other half of the character, and it's the part most likely to fall off, bump into things or get in the way of eating candy.
What to make it from
Craft foam is the lightest and survives being knocked. Rolled cardstock is quick but crushes. Papier-mâché over a paper cone looks the most like carved wood once painted, though it needs a couple of days to dry. I paint any of them with a warm tan base, then dry-brush a darker brown along the length so it reads as grain.
How to attach it
Thin round elastic around the head works when a hat hides the strap. Leave the back of the nose open so air moves and it doesn't trap heat against the skin. For children, a short nose fixed to the hat brim or to a pair of empty glasses frames stays on better than elastic. I'd avoid gluing anything to skin unless the adhesive is made for skin and you've patch-tested it the day before.
How long is too long
Keep it short enough that the wearer can see their own feet and turn their head in a crowd. Save the very long nose for photos at home, then swap to a short one for walking the neighborhood.
Red, Yellow and Blue Carry Every Version
Pinocchio stretches further than almost any storybook character. His red, yellow, blue, black and white palette carries every version, and the hat, bow tie, feather, gloves and nose supply the details people look for. Strip those back for babies, pets, school days or sensory needs, or build them up with puppet makeup and stage strings. For any version, my advice is the same: get the hat right, keep the nose short enough to live with, choose fabrics that breathe, and wear shoes you've already walked in. Do that and the costume still feels good at the end of the night.
