A good movie costume does one job: someone across a dark room says the character's name before you've said a word. That almost never comes from an exact replica. It comes from the two or three things the camera lingered on, usually a colour, a haircut and one object in the hand. I've put together forty-five film characters here, from Barbie and Cher to Gandalf and Edna Mode, and for each one I've noted the base clothing, the hair, the makeup, the prop and a shoe you can actually walk in. Most of them start from pieces you already own or can find on a thrift rail, and every one can be loosened up for more coverage or a cooler night.

Building a Screen Wardrobe From a Thrift Rail
Before I buy anything for a film character, I pause the movie on the costume and write down only what I could see from the back of a room. That list is usually short: the main colour, the outline of the clothes, the hair and one prop. Everything on it gets my attention. Anything else, like an exact button, a lining colour or the right fabric weave, can be close enough.
Shop by colour first, then by cut
Secondhand racks are sorted by size, but I scan them by colour. A yellow plaid skirt for Cher or a polka-dot dress for Vivian jumps out much faster that way. Check the fibre label too. Wool and cotton blends take a steam iron and look tailored; thin polyester shines under flash and creases badly when you sit.
Alter, don't sew from scratch
- Taking in a blazer at the side seams is a beginner job and makes cheap pieces look fitted.
- Hemming a maxi dress to just above the floor stops the trips that ruin long gowns like Glinda's or Holly's.
- Tacking trims on with a few hand stitches lasts the whole night; fabric glue on stretch fabric does not.
- Adding hook-and-loop to patches lets a coverall or jacket go back to everyday wear afterwards.
Try the full outfit on at home a few days early. Sit, climb a step, and lift your arms. If something pulls, pinches or falls off, you'll want to fix it at your table, not in a bathroom halfway through the party.
1. Barbie Cowgirl Movie Costume

Barbie's cowgirl look lives or dies on how pink it is, so I match the vest and flares as closely as I can and let everything else be white. Hot pink sleeveless vest, matching flare-leg pants with white stars, a fitted pink top underneath. Felt stars are fine for a night, but on stretch polyester I stitch them down with a few tacks, because fabric glue lets go the moment the leg flexes. Add a white cowgirl hat, a pink bandana, heart sunglasses and long blonde curls (a wig is easier than curling your own hair for hours). Pink blush, gloss and a little shimmer cover the makeup. White ankle boots or comfortable Western boots, a small pink purse, and you're done. If you're out all evening, stretch fabric and a cushioned boot matter more than any rhinestone.
2. Ken Beach Movie Costume

Ken's beach outfit is the easiest laugh on this list. A pink-and-mint striped button-down with matching striped shorts is the real thing, though mixing any two pastel stripes reads fine from a distance. Wear the shirt open over a light pink tank, then add white sneakers, pastel crew socks and a cardboard surfboard. I cut the board shorter than you think, roughly chest height, because a full-length one clips every doorframe and every person behind you. Short blond hair with lots of lift, or a brushed-back blonde wig, a touch of bronzer, a bright wristband. On a cold night, skin-tone thermals under the shorts don't change the joke at all, and the pair is built to stand beside a Barbie.
3. Cher Horowitz Plaid Movie Costume

Cher Horowitz is one of the rare school looks people name from the colour alone, which means the yellow plaid has to be the right yellow. Look for a warm mustard-lemon rather than a pale butter, in a blazer and matching pleated skirt over a white fitted top. White knee socks, black Mary Janes or low block heels, long straight blonde hair with softly curled ends and a smooth headband. Neutral eyeshadow, rosy blush and pink gloss keep the face fresh. A small fuzzy backpack or a flip phone prop, plus gold studs. When I can't find a matched set, a yellow cardigan over a plaid skirt still carries it, because the palette is doing the work.
4. Dionne Davenport Plaid Movie Costume

Dionne Davenport is the friend who usually gets overlooked, and she's the better outfit. A black-and-white plaid blazer and matching mini skirt over a fitted white or red top, then over-the-knee socks and black platform loafers. The tall black brimmed hat is non-negotiable. I add the white ribbon or faux flower with a couple of stitches rather than glue, since a hat gets taken off and put down all night and glued trims are the first thing to drop off. Long braids or waves, defined liner, warm blush and a deep berry lip. Carry a small structured bag and a bright pretend flip phone, wear opaque tights underneath if you'd like more coverage, and stand next to your Cher.
5. Elle Woods Pink Movie Costume

Elle Woods is pink on pink, and the trap is mixing five different pinks that fight each other. I pick one shade for the blazer and skirt (or a knee-length pink dress with a tailored jacket) and let the shoes and bag sit a step lighter. Nude or pink pumps, or block heels and flats if you'll be standing. Smooth blonde waves with one side pinned by a small pink clip, rosy cheeks, mascara and a glossy pink lip. The props tell the story: a pink handbag, a faux law book and a small plush dog peeking out of the bag. Pearl studs and a heart necklace finish it. Trousers or a longer skirt work just as well if you'd rather not wear a short hem.
6. Regina George Pink Cardigan Movie Costume

Regina George is built from basics: a fitted pink cardigan, white tank and black pleated mini, with sheer tights if you like. Black pumps, ballet flats or low ankle boots. Straight, smooth blonde hair with a centre or slightly off part, a soft smoky eye, pink blush and a neutral gloss. What makes people laugh is the handmade burn book. I make mine from a thrifted notebook covered in pink paper, and I keep it closed or fill it with harmless fictional notes, since someone will always try to read it. A small shoulder bag and gold hoops round it off. It's a good last-minute pick because almost everything is already in a closet.
7. Cady Heron Red Top Movie Costume

Cady's party outfit is plain on its own, and I'd be honest about that. A sleeveless red top, black straight-leg pants or a knee-length black skirt, black ankle boots or platform loafers. Long auburn hair, straight, or a natural-looking red wig with a centre part; I'd avoid the very orange cheap wigs, which read as a clown rather than a redhead under party lighting. Light liner, mascara, peach blush and a neutral lip. A gold cardstock crown and a blue ribbon sash point to her school dance moment and keep it family-friendly. Add a fitted black cardigan if it's cold. Put her next to a Regina and the whole thing clicks.
8. Mia Wallace Black Bob Movie Costume

Mia Wallace is mostly the haircut. Get the chin-length blunt black bob with short straight bangs right and the rest can be very simple: a slightly oversized white button-down with the cuffs rolled and the collar open, tailored black ankle-length pants, black ballet flats or low block heels. If you're using a wig, I trim the fringe a little at a time while it's on your head, because a bob that's even slightly too long loses the sharpness. Pale foundation, thin black liner, mascara and a muted red lip. Keep the accessories to small studs and a black clutch, and carry a paper dance-contest card or a retro diner menu. No crafting required.
9. Holly Golightly Black Dress Movie Costume

The Holly Golightly opening look is a sleeveless floor-length black dress with a simple fitted line and a modest neck. Black kitten heels, long black gloves, oversized sunglasses and several strands of faux pearls. The hair is a high, polished updo with a small sparkly piece near the front. I build the updo over a padded bun form so it holds height without a hundred pins. Winged liner, defined brows, peach blush and a soft pink lip. Carry a small black bag and a paper coffee cup, which is the detail people actually remember. A midi dress is fine if a long gown is impractical; just keep the gloves and pearls. It's a calm, indoor sort of costume, and nearly every piece goes back into the wardrobe afterwards.
10. Vivian Ward Polka Dot Movie Costume

Vivian Ward's polka-dot outfit is the refined option for a movie party. A knee-length brown-and-white dot dress with a fitted waist and modest neck, a coordinating brown belt, white gloves, pearl earrings and a cream structured bag. Brown pumps, low block heels or pointed flats. The wide-brim brown hat with a white band is what carries the character, so I pin it through a low bun with two long hatpins or a comb sewn inside the crown, or it will lift off in the first doorway breeze. Auburn hair, softly defined eyes, rosy cheeks, warm pink lipstick and a small faux event program. Secondhand dress racks are the best place to look for the dress.
11. Dorothy Gale Movie Costume

Blue gingham does most of Dorothy's work for you. A white puff-sleeve blouse under a blue gingham pinafore, or a one-piece dress with the same details. White ankle socks and sparkly red flats instead of heels, since you'll walk more in this one than you expect. Centre-parted brown hair in two neat braids tied with pale blue ribbon, rosy blush, light mascara and a natural lip. A small wicker basket lined with blue fabric and a plush dog. If you glitter your own shoes, seal the glitter with a clear coat; loose glitter sheds on every floor you cross. A few fabric poppies on the basket add colour, and the whole costume scales down easily for children or teens.
12. Glinda Pink Gown Movie Costume

Glinda doesn't need complicated construction, but she does need volume. A floor-length pale pink dress with puff sleeves and layered tulle or subtle sequins, silver ballet flats under the hem, soft blonde curls or a long wavy wig, and a lightweight silver crown. Pink eyeshadow, pearly highlighter, rosy blush and gloss. The wand is a glitter star on a short handle. I'd skip a hooped skirt: it looks wonderful standing still and becomes a problem in every hallway, on every chair and in every car. Several layers of tulle give the same fullness and squash down when you sit. Sparkly studs and a fine necklace are plenty.
13. Elphaba Black Dress Movie Costume

Elphaba is all about the shape and the green. A long black dress with a high neck, a structured bodice and a layered or pleated skirt, a fitted black jacket or capelet, and lace-up boots you can stand in. The tall, wide-brim pointed hat goes over long dark waves or a low braid. Green makeup has to cover the face, neck and any visible hands evenly, then charcoal shadow defines the brows and eyes. Black gloves save you painting your hands, and I'd use them, because green hands touch everything. Carry an old-looking book or a small satchel. It's the strongest colour statement on this list without a single risky prop.
14. Beetlejuice Striped Suit Movie Costume

The black-and-white vertical stripes are what people see first, so the suit is where I'd put the money or the time. A striped blazer and matching pants over a white shirt and narrow black tie, chunky black shoes or lace-up boots with cushioned insoles. A wild white wig with faint green temporary colour at the roots. I tease the wig with a wide comb and a little hairspray instead of brushing it, since brushing a cheap synthetic wig is how it turns to frizz. Pale makeup, a smoky eye and soft green at the hairline, nothing graphic. A striped pocket square and a vintage ticket finish it. Keep the tailoring loose enough to sit down, and if you can, bring a Lydia.
15. Lydia Deetz Red Dress Movie Costume

Lydia's red wedding look is the most dressmaking-heavy outfit here. A long bright red dress with lace sleeves, a ruffled neck and layers of tulle or chiffon, worn with red or black ankle boots. The spiky half-up hair leaves textured pieces around the face. Pale foundation, softly smudged black liner, a muted berry lip and natural brows. The short red veil is the strongest single reference, and a cheap tulle veil on a comb is enough. If the full gown is too much, a red lace blouse over a matching maxi skirt still reads clearly. Carry a small vintage camera or a closed book.
16. Edward Scissorhands Movie Costume

The safe way to do Edward Scissorhands is to fake the blades completely. A fitted black long-sleeve top and black pants covered in faux leather belts, foam buckles and silver fabric strips, then sturdy black lace-up boots. The messy black wig gets teased into tall uneven sections and held with strong spray. For the hands, I make soft silver fabric tubes stuffed with fibre fill and stitch them to the fingers of black gloves. They flop a little, which honestly reads more like the film than stiff card does, and they can't hurt anyone in a crowd. Pale foundation, charcoal shadow and thin grey contour lines, no wound effects. A small faux topiary leaf is a nice wink.
17. Coraline Yellow Raincoat Movie Costume

Coraline is the costume I'd hand to anyone who knows the night will be wet. A bright yellow raincoat over a striped orange or red long-sleeve top and dark jeans, with yellow rain boots or blue sneakers. A short blue bob wig with a side part and flipped ends, freckles, rosy cheeks and a touch of blue liner. Carry a blue shoulder bag, a small key charm and a plush black cat. Sew the two big black buttons onto the bag, not anywhere near your eyes. The coat keeps you dry and warm, and it's a real raincoat you'll keep wearing long after the party.
18. Corpse Bride Blue Gown Movie Costume

The Corpse Bride can be romantic rather than frightening if you keep the decay to the fabric. A pale blue or blue-grey maxi dress with lace sleeves and layers of light tulle, blue ballet flats or low ankle boots, a long blue wig in loose waves, a floral crown and a sheer veil. I tear and fray the tulle hem a little with my fingers instead of cutting it, which gives a softly weathered edge. Even blue makeup on the face, lavender eyeshadow, defined lashes and a muted pink lip. A small bouquet of blue, white and grey artificial flowers and a few fabric butterflies on the skirt or crown finish her.
19. Cruella Black And White Movie Costume

Cruella needs contrast and confidence. A fitted black dress or a tailored black pantsuit under a long faux-fur coat in white, black or a spotted pattern, red gloves and red block heels. The half-black, half-white hair is essential, and a split-colour bob wig is far easier than temporary colour, which tends to transfer onto that white coat collar. Sharp winged liner, sculpted brows, light contour and a bold red lip. A structured red bag and a rolled fashion sketch, plus oversized costume jewellery. Use faux fur only. A long fur coat is warm, so this one belongs indoors or on a cold night.
20. Maleficent Black Cape Movie Costume

Maleficent is a silhouette costume, and the horns make or break it. Start with a long black dress or a tunic and pants, then a sweeping black or deep purple cape and black pointed flats or low boots. The fitted black headpiece covers your hair, and the curved horns on top should be foam, not anything solid. I heat-shape EVA foam for horns because it holds a curve and weighs very little; craft foam won't hold the bend and droops by midnight. Strong cheek contour, arched brows, a smoky eye and a deep red lip. A raven charm, a dark jewelled ring, and a small purple ornament or faux raven instead of a staff. Hem the cape so it clears the floor.
21. Sandy Grease Finale Movie Costume

Sandy's finale outfit can be as sleek or as covered as you like. High-waisted black pants with a fitted off-the-shoulder black top, or a regular black knit with a wide neck. A cropped black jacket and red low heels, wedges or ballet flats. Big blonde curls, from your own hair or a shoulder-length wig. Black liner, mascara, peach blush and a bright red lip, with gold hoops and a simple belt. A small retro school program makes a light prop. I'd pick stretch pants over real leather-look vinyl if you plan to dance, because vinyl doesn't breathe and gets clammy within an hour. A long-sleeve top and straight leg give more coverage.
22. Danny Zuko Greaser Movie Costume

Danny Zuko is mostly grooming. A fitted black crew-neck tee tucked into black or dark indigo jeans, a black faux-leather jacket and black boots or classic low-top sneakers. The high, smooth pompadour is what sells it, and a washable pomade holds it far better than gel, which goes crunchy and collapses as the room warms up. Roll the tee sleeves slightly and cuff the jeans for a stronger retro line. Minimal makeup, a little matte foundation and brow definition if you want it. A black comb visible in the jacket pocket is the only prop you need. He pairs naturally with a Sandy or a whole Pink Ladies group.
23. Marty McFly Movie Costume

Marty McFly is a layering costume, which is both its charm and its problem. A red quilted vest over a blue denim jacket and a red plaid button-down, straight-leg blue jeans and white retro sneakers. Short brown hair, tousled and side-swept, with natural makeup. A digital watch, aviators and a lightweight skateboard, swapped for a cardboard one at a crowded event. A folded fictional town newspaper is a fun extra. That's three warm layers on top, so for an indoor party I'd choose a thin chambray shirt and a lightweight vest, or you'll be peeling pieces off by nine o'clock.
24. Doc Brown White Jumpsuit Movie Costume

Doc Brown combines workwear with a lot of silly scientific clutter. A white painter's coverall or zip-front jumpsuit over a pale shirt, sturdy white sneakers or neutral work shoes. A wild white wig styled away from the face, exaggerated brows and light age lines. The utility belt carries safe plastic tubes, bright cords and empty labelled containers. Goggles sit on the forehead and a big novelty watch goes on the wrist. Carry a clipboard of hand-drawn equations instead of machinery. A little grey costume powder on the sleeves suggests a workshop. Painter's coveralls are cheap and roomy, so this is one of the most comfortable outfits on the list, and it's twice as funny next to a Marty.
25. Indiana Jones Adventure Movie Costume

Indiana Jones reads from the hat and the satchel. A light beige button-down tucked into brown straight-leg pants, a dark brown faux-leather jacket, sturdy brown lace-up boots and a wide-brim fedora. I'd spend on the fedora before anything else, because a flimsy party-shop hat loses its brim shape and that's the first thing people look at. Short brown hair, natural under the hat, light bronzer. A canvas crossbody satchel, a folded map, a small notebook and a soft foam artifact. Leave the whip at home, especially in public. Roll the sleeves and scuff the jacket gently with washable brown makeup if you like.
26. Ellie Sattler Jurassic Park Movie Costume

Ellie Sattler is a good warm-weather pick. A coral or dusty pink tank with khaki shorts and an oversized light blue button-down tied at the waist, brown hiking boots and crew socks. Blonde hair in a loose low ponytail with a few face-framing pieces, dewy skin, mascara and peach lip balm. Carry a toy leaf, a field notebook, a visitor badge and a small canvas backpack. A dusting of washable powder on the boots hints at fieldwork. If it's cool, khaki cargo pants replace the shorts. Every piece is easy to find secondhand, and the boots are the only thing I'd insist you've already broken in.
27. Ghostbuster Utility Jumpsuit Movie Costume

The Ghostbuster is the costume I'd steer a group toward, since one jumpsuit pattern repeated four times looks deliberate. A relaxed tan coverall with a homemade name patch and a felt circular ghost emblem, black work boots, elbow pads and a wide utility belt. Natural hair or a casual 1980s shape, minimal makeup with a little grey powder. The backpack is foam with colourful tubes, and the hand piece is a detection meter rather than anything weapon-like. Yellow-tinted safety glasses add character. I build the pack on two wide straps of webbing so it doesn't drag the shoulders of the coverall down, and I make sure every attached piece lifts off easily when you need to sit.
28. Maverick Flight Suit Movie Costume

Maverick's flight suit is easy to wear and easy to read. An olive green zip-front coverall with removable aviation-style patches, black combat-style boots or cushioned lace-ups, aviators and simple metal dog tags over a white undershirt. Short brown hair neat with volume at the front, natural makeup and a little bronzer. The white helmet should be light costume plastic, decorated with geometric stickers rather than real logos. I attach patches with hook-and-loop so the coverall goes back to plain workwear afterwards. For a group, matching suits with personal call-sign patches are a very cheap way to look coordinated.
29. Neo Black Coat Movie Costume

Neo is a last-minute costume if you already own a long black coat. A fitted black long-sleeve shirt, black straight-leg pants, a floor-length black coat and polished black boots you can stand in for hours. Short dark hair swept back, narrow oval sunglasses, matte foundation, subtle contour and a natural lip. Keep a clear-lens pair in your pocket, since dark glasses indoors at night mean walking into furniture. A small vintage phone or a card printed with green computer symbols is a safe prop. Choose a coat with side vents so it doesn't bind when you walk. Posture does half the work here.
30. Trinity Black Jumpsuit Movie Costume

Trinity is the sleek partner to Neo. A long-sleeve black jumpsuit, or a fitted mock-neck with black faux-leather pants, a knee-length black coat and sturdy platform boots with non-slip soles. Short slicked-back dark hair or a cropped wig, sharp brows, matte skin and a neutral lip. Narrow black sunglasses are essential, though they should come off in dim rooms. A small black phone or a compact silver gadget is the prop; leave out anything tactical. Every piece needs to fit close, and faux leather that bags at the knee spoils the line quickly, so I'd try the pants sitting down before buying them.
31. Catwoman Black Catsuit Movie Costume

Catwoman relies on a smooth black line and a few cat details. A comfortable long-sleeve black jumpsuit or a fitted top with stretch black pants, a cropped faux-leather jacket and black ankle boots with stable heels. A cat-ear headpiece or a stitched-effect hood over dark hair. Smoky eyeshadow, winged liner, sculpted brows and a berry lip. Black gloves, a wide belt and a small cat-shaped bag. Skip whips and sharp claws; metallic press-on nail stickers give the effect safely. Breathable stretch matters more than shine here, because a shiny synthetic catsuit gets hot fast in a crowded room.
32. Wonder Woman Armor Movie Costume

You don't need heavy armour for Wonder Woman. A red structured top with a knee-length blue skirt or flexible blue pants with small gold stars, red knee boots in a flat or low heel, long glossy dark waves and a gold foam tiara. I cut the tiara and cuffs from EVA foam and seal it before painting gold; unsealed foam soaks up paint and looks dull and patchy. Luminous skin, defined brows, soft bronze shadow and a red lip. A wide gold foam belt and an optional blue cape for warmth and coverage. No swords needed. With a few changes to length and fit, it works for adults, teens and children.
33. Superman Blue Suit Movie Costume

Superman's primary colours do the explaining. A blue long-sleeve athletic top with matching leggings or joggers as the base, a red-and-yellow felt chest emblem, then red shorts or a longer red waistband depending on the coverage you want. A flowing red cape and red boots or high-top sneakers. Felt glued to stretch athletic fabric will pop off the first time you stretch, so I stitch the emblem around its edge by hand. Neat dark hair with a small curl at the forehead, clean natural makeup. Carry black rectangular glasses for a quick Clark Kent switch. Fix the cape with snaps so it can come off in a crowd.
34. Spider-Man Red And Blue Movie Costume

Spider-Man is easy to customise. A printed full-coverage jumpsuit, or a red athletic top, blue leggings and red sneakers, with black web lines drawn on in washable textile marker if you're making it. A breathable fabric hood with large white mesh eyes, as long as you can actually see through them. I'd check the hood in a dim room first, because mesh that looks see-through in daylight can be close to blind at night. If you'd rather leave the face bare, keep your hair natural and paint a small web near one eye. Red gloves and a soft foam camera are good props. Don't add trailing cords or web strings, which are a tripping hazard.
35. Black Panther Movie Costume

Black Panther needs a fitted black base and silver detailing. A black long-sleeve athletic top and pants, or a full-body jumpsuit, with silver geometric lines in fabric tape or flexible textile paint. Black sneakers or low boots. A lightweight panther-style mask with wide eye openings, or no mask and silver graphic liner instead. The foam collar inspired by claw shapes is the strongest accessory, and every edge should be soft and rounded. I use flexible paint over fabric tape on anything stretchy, since tape tends to lift and wrinkle at elbows and knees. Black gloves and a short draped shoulder cape are optional. Keep it sleek, not bulky.
36. Princess Leia White Gown Movie Costume

Princess Leia's white outfit is modest and simple. A long-sleeve white maxi dress with a high neck and a flowing skirt, a silver belt at the waist and white ankle boots or flats. The two side buns are the giveaway. I'd use clip-in bun pieces over your own centre-parted hair; making real buns that size from your own hair takes a lot of length and a lot of pins. Soft brown liner, pink blush and a rose lip. A small silver communicator or a star-map card is a harmless prop, and a hooded white cape stands in for the draped sleeves and adds warmth. White shows every mark, so carry a stain wipe.
37. Han Solo Vest Movie Costume

Han Solo uses basic neutral clothing. A cream band-collar shirt, black straight-leg pants and a fitted black vest, plus a red stripe down the outside of each leg. I'd use red bias binding or twill tape stitched along the side seam; a painted line cracks once you start walking. Tall black boots or comfortable ankle boots, brown hair swept casually back, natural makeup. A star chart, a silver comms prop or a small cargo pouch instead of a blaster. A wide black belt with a silver buckle adds the last accent. He stands up on his own, but he's at his best next to a Leia or a Luke.
38. Frodo Baggins Hobbit Movie Costume

Frodo is the cosiest costume on this list. A white collarless shirt, brown knee-length pants and a moss-green or rust vest, with a dark green cloak fastened by a leaf brooch. Short brown curls or a tousled wig, rosy cheeks and a few freckles. A cloth satchel, a rolled map and a gold-coloured ring secured on a chain. For hobbit feet, I make brown shoe covers with soft faux fur glued on the top and left bare on the sole, so they grip the ground instead of slipping. Keep the cloak above the ankle. It suits adults, teens and children at an outdoor autumn event.
39. Gandalf Gray Robe Movie Costume

Gandalf looks grand but stays comfortable. A long grey tunic over loose grey pants, a darker floor-length robe or cape and brown boots with sturdy soles. A long grey wig, a matching beard and a wide-brim pointed grey hat. Trim the wig and beard so they don't block your vision or trail into your drink. Light grey brow colour and subtle age lines, a light walking staff with rounded ends and a small fabric pouch. Breathable fabrics matter, because a wig, a beard and two long layers get hot fast indoors. He fits easily into any fantasy group with hobbits and elves.
40. Hermione Granger School Movie Costume

Hermione's uniform is neat and easy to adapt. A white collared shirt, a grey V-neck sweater, a dark pleated skirt or tailored pants and a black robe, plus a striped burgundy-and-gold tie, black loafers and knee socks. The hair should be thick waves, slightly untamed around the shoulders; I brush out braids that were put in damp the night before rather than reaching for a curling iron. Natural foundation, rosy cheeks and a soft lip. Carry old books, parchment-style notes and a small satchel instead of a wand, and stitch a handmade crest onto the robe rather than using official branding. It's appropriate for school parties and libraries.
41. Harry Potter School Movie Costume

Round glasses and a striped scarf tell everyone who Harry is. A white button-down, a grey sweater, black trousers and a long black robe, plus a burgundy-and-gold tie and scarf and polished black shoes. Short dark hair, deliberately messy. Draw the small lightning mark near the forehead with a skin-safe eyeliner pencil and set it with a dab of powder so it doesn't smear under a fringe. Schoolbooks, a rolled parchment and a small brown satchel instead of a wand, plus a handmade robe patch. Layer a thermal under the sweater for outdoor events. It's easy for children and adults, and best in a group.
42. Willy Wonka Purple Coat Movie Costume

Willy Wonka is all about colour and a vintage shape. A deep purple velvet-look coat over a patterned vest, a white shirt and brown or black trousers, a bright bow tie and polished lace-up shoes. A softly curled brown bob under a tall brown top hat. Pale foundation, rosy blush, subtle purple shadow and a berry lip. Carry a gold ticket, a small candy-shaped purse or a cane with a light rounded top. Don't hand out unwrapped sweets in public. Velvet-look fabric crushes when it's packed, so I hang the coat in a steamy bathroom an hour before the party to bring the pile back up. Patterned socks are a playful touch.
43. Forrest Gump Running Movie Costume

Forrest Gump's running outfit is comfortable enough to wear for hours. A pale yellow tee, bright red athletic shorts with white trim, striped crew socks and supportive white running shoes. A red cap with a small handmade patch and medium brown hair underneath. The full beard is what tells people it's the running version, so use a soft costume beard or shaded makeup. I trim costume beards down by about a third, because straight out of the packet they look like a wizard rather than a man who's been jogging for three years. A cardboard road map, a reusable water bottle or a small race number, plus a windbreaker tied at the waist if it's cool.
44. Ace Ventura Tropical Shirt Movie Costume

Ace Ventura is loud on purpose. A colourful tropical shirt open over a white tank, red-and-black striped pants or other bold trousers, black lace-up boots and white crew socks. The tall upward swoop of hair is half the joke. Washable gel works if your hair is long enough at the front; otherwise a molded wig saves a lot of frustration. Expressive brows and light contour, otherwise natural. A small plush animal, a detective notebook and a novelty business card are the props, and no live animals. Roll the sleeves and practise the animated posture.
45. Edna Mode Black Dress Movie Costume

Edna Mode needs only a few pieces. A structured knee-length black dress with long sleeves and a high geometric collar, opaque black tights and low black ankle boots or block-heel pumps. The hair is crucial: a smooth black bob wig with blunt bangs and rounded sides. If the collar won't stand up, I slip a strip of heavy fusible interfacing or a cut piece of plastic folder inside it, which holds the shape all night. Oversized round black glasses, pale matte foundation, strong brows and a muted red lip. Carry a mini sketchbook, a tape measure and fabric swatches, and add a short black capelet if you want more shape. Keep the hem and sleeves clean and plain.
Synthetic Wigs Need a Little Taming
More than a dozen of these characters depend on hair you probably don't have, from Mia's black bob to Cruella's split colour and Gandalf's long grey. A wig saves you dyeing, but a cheap synthetic one straight out of the bag looks shiny and stiff. A few minutes of work changes that.
- Shake it out and let it hang overnight on a bottle or a head form so the packing creases relax.
- Use a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward, never a fine brush, which frizzes the fibres.
- A light dusting of dry shampoo or baby powder cuts the plastic shine.
- Trim fringes while the wig is on your head, a little at a time, because it shifts once it's pinned.
- Keep it away from candles, ovens and hairdryers; most synthetic fibre melts or frizzes with heat.
To keep it in place, I flatten my own hair into pin curls or a low braid, pull on a wig cap and push a few bobby pins through the wig's inner combs into the cap. Afterwards, wash it in cool water with a little shampoo and leave it to dry on its stand. A cared-for wig will see you through several costumes.
Green Skin, Blue Skin and a Clean Collar
Elphaba, the Corpse Bride and a touch of Beetlejuice all ask for coloured skin, and that's the part people worry about. I patch-test any new makeup on the inside of the wrist the day before. On the night, start on clean, moisturised skin, build the colour in thin layers with a damp sponge, and press translucent setting powder over the top. Water-activated makeup tends to stay put better than cream, which creases and transfers in a warm room.
Paint well down the neck and fade it out, then wear a dark or same-colour collar so a smudge won't show. Bring a few cotton swabs and a small powder compact for touch-ups. To take it off, use an oil cleanser or makeup remover first and soap second; scrubbing with soap alone just leaves a tinted, sore face.
Forty-Five Characters, Three Clues Each
If you take one thing from this list, let it be that people recognise a character from a few signals: a colour, a haircut, a shape and one thing in the hand. Get those right and the rest can come from your own closet. The plainest builds here are Mia Wallace, Danny Zuko and Neo; the ones that repay a good wig and some handmade pieces are Elphaba, Beetlejuice and Edna Mode. Pick the one that fits your budget, your skills, the venue and how much coverage you want. Keep the props light, the shoes supportive and the makeup something you can live in for a whole evening. I'd start with whichever character you could already half-build from your wardrobe tonight.
