Put a stiff padded headband next to a head of messy blonde waves and most people at a party will name the pair before you say a word. That contrast is the whole trick of dressing as Serena and Blair with your best friend. Blair is neat, coordinated and a little rigid; Serena is glamorous but looks like she got dressed in the back of a cab. When I style this duo, I give Blair glossy brunette curls, a structured shape and a hair accessory, and I give Serena textured hair, glowing skin, layers and slouchy boots. Below are 45 versions, from school uniforms you can pull from a closet to full gala gowns.

The Contrast That Makes People Name You on Sight
Every costume below comes down to the same contrast. When I style a pair, I sort each piece into one of two piles: tight, matched and finished for Blair, loose, layered and slightly wrong for Serena. If both friends end up with the same coat shape, the same bag or the same hair texture, the pairing goes flat and people guess "two girls in uniforms" instead of naming the characters.
Blair's side
- A padded or bow headband, worn every time. It matters more than any other piece she has.
- Smooth curls with the ends turned under. I set them with a firm-hold spray so they last until the party ends.
- Matching colours: tights, headband and lipstick pulled from the same two or three shades.
- A stiff, top-handle bag held in the hand, not on the shoulder.
Serena's side
- Waves that look slept in. A texturising spray works better than a curling iron here, because neat curls make her look like Blair.
- Several gold necklaces of different lengths.
- Slouchy or worn boots, never shiny new ones.
- A big soft bag that hangs off one shoulder.
Settle the hair and the headband first, then fill in the clothes. If you're short on time, those two pieces and a pair of boots will carry almost any version on this list.
1. Serena And Blair School Uniform Costume

This is the version I'd send two friends out in if they only want to make one costume this year. Blair gets a crisp white blouse, navy blazer, plaid pleated skirt, burgundy knee socks and loafers, with a red headband, pearl studs, a stiff handbag, smooth brunette curls, rosy lipstick and tidy eyeliner. Serena wears the same school pieces worn badly on purpose: a white shirt buttoned low, a loose striped tie, a shorter plaid skirt and a fitted navy blazer, plus tall brown boots, layered gold necklaces and a slouchy shoulder bag. The tie is where I see people go wrong. Tie it properly for Blair and knot it loose and off-centre for Serena, and the two uniforms suddenly read as two different girls. Notebooks or a printed class schedule are the only props you need.
2. Serena And Blair Winter Uniform Costume

On a cold October night this is the uniform I'd actually wear, because the coat is part of the costume instead of hiding it. Blair takes a plaid skirt, cream blouse, navy cardigan and burgundy tights under a fitted red wool coat, with black Mary Janes, a velvet headband, leather gloves and a structured satchel. Serena gets a white shirt, loose striped tie, plaid skirt, gray knee socks and an oversized camel coat, plus knee-high brown boots, a long patterned scarf and layered necklaces. Keep Blair's hair glossy and controlled and let Serena's stay rough. Two takeaway cups and a couple of schoolbooks are props you can hold all night without them getting in the way.
3. Serena And Blair Spring Uniform Costume

For a heated indoor party or a warm afternoon, I lighten the uniform rather than drop it. Blair wears a pale blue blouse with a navy ribbon tie, a pleated plaid skirt, a short fitted cardigan, white knee socks, navy ballet flats, a satin headband, pearl earrings and a tiny top-handle purse. Serena rolls the sleeves of a relaxed white button-down, knots her tie loosely and adds a plaid mini, a lightweight navy vest, tan ankle boots, stacked bracelets and a soft leather bag. Blair's curls should be defined, with pink blush. Serena wants loose waves, bronzer and a little shimmer. Pastel folders finish it.
4. Serena And Blair Rainy Day Costume

Rain is the night most costumes fail, so I like having one plan where the outerwear is the outfit. Blair belts a red trench over a cream blouse and plaid skirt, adds navy opaque tights, shiny black rain boots, a bow headband, a structured bag and a compact umbrella. Serena throws an olive utility coat over a loose gray sweater and short plaid skirt, with patterned tights, worn brown boots, gold jewelry and a big shoulder bag. A headband survives drizzle far better than curls do, which suits Blair; Serena's windblown waves actually look better damp. Carry two umbrellas that don't match exactly.
5. Serena And Blair Graduation Costume

Graduation gowns are cheap and easy, but a closed gown hides everything that makes these two different. So I leave both navy gowns partly open. Underneath, Blair shows a white collared dress, pearl earrings, low pumps and a slim headband that sits under the cap, with glossy curls and pink lipstick. Serena wears a gold satin mini, layered necklaces and heeled ankle boots, her blonde hair loose under a cap tilted a little too far back. Roll paper diplomas and tie them with navy ribbon. If you can sew, a felt initial or crest stitched on each gown helps; glued felt tends to peel off polyester by the end of the night.
6. Serena And Blair Met Steps Costume

The museum steps look is about sitting and being seen, so choose pieces that don't ride up when you perch on a stair. Blair tucks a patterned blouse into a bright A-line skirt and adds a fitted cardigan, coloured tights, pointed flats, a wide headband, pearls, a stiff purse and careful curls. Serena wears a loose metallic tank under a fitted blazer, a pleated mini and tall leather boots, with a stack of gold necklaces and a relaxed bag. I'd hand both of them a yogurt cup and a spoon. It's a small prop, and fans of the show will get it right away.
7. Serena And Blair Brunch Costume

Brunch is my pick for friends who want the characters without anything that looks like a store-bought costume. Blair wears a floral fit-and-flare dress, a cropped cardigan, sheer tights and patent ballet flats, with a padded headband, a pearl necklace, a structured handbag, soft curls, rosy cheeks and a berry lip. Serena tucks a silky blouse loosely into tailored shorts and adds an oversized blazer, suede knee boots, fine gold necklaces and a hobo bag, with brushed-out waves and bronzer. A small pastry box is an easy prop to carry. Just keep the box empty if you'll be sitting on sofas.
8. Serena And Blair Central Park Costume

A park walk calls for colour, because outdoors you lose the detail and keep the silhouette. Blair's fitted green coat goes over a printed dress with burgundy opaque tights and black pumps, plus a matching headband, leather gloves, pearl studs and a structured bag; her curls sit neatly under the band. Serena's camel leather jacket goes over a striped knit, dark skinny jeans and slouchy brown boots, with layered necklaces, a soft scarf and an oversized bag. If the walk is long, I'd swap Blair's pumps for low block heels in the same colour. A folded city map works as a prop.
9. Serena And Blair Thanksgiving Dinner Costume

Burgundy, bronze and camel are the colours I reach for on a late-October dinner, and they suit a family gathering where a short skirt might not. Blair wears a burgundy lace dress with a fitted waist, opaque tights, black Mary Jane heels, a jeweled headband, pearl earrings and a tiny structured bag, with smooth curls and defined rosy makeup. Serena pairs a bronze satin blouse with a dark mini, a long camel cardigan and suede knee boots, gold jewelry at the open neck, a soft clutch and warm bronzer. Lace snags on knit cardigans, so I'd keep Blair in a fitted jacket instead. Place cards make a tidy prop.
10. Serena And Blair Cotillion Costume

Debutante dressing is where Blair is most at home, and Serena is most likely to look bored, which is exactly how I'd play it. Blair wears a white tea-length gown with a fitted bodice and satin waist ribbon, a pearl necklace, elbow-length gloves, silver pumps and a delicate jeweled headband over glossy curls. Serena wears a flowing ivory halter gown with a little metallic detail, drop earrings and strappy silver heels, with loose waves and soft shimmer. Give the two of them different silhouettes. Two white gowns in the same cut just look like a wedding party. A small silk bouquet or a dance card is enough to carry.
11. Serena And Blair Masquerade Costume

A masquerade gives you drama without anything scary. I always put masks on a handle for this one, because a tied mask narrows your view and makes stairs harder. Blair wears a structured burgundy ball gown with black opera gloves, jeweled pumps, an ornate headband, pearl drops, polished curls, berry lipstick and a small gold mask on a stick. Serena wears a fluid gold gown with a draped neckline, strappy heels, layered metallic jewelry and a cream-and-gold mask, with loose waves and bronzed cheeks. A pair of invitation cards rounds it out for a formal party or themed dance.
12. Serena And Blair Black Tie Gala Costume

For black tie, Blair goes princess and Serena goes rock star. Blair wears a navy strapless gown with a fitted bodice and full skirt, satin pumps and a crystal headband, her hair in a smooth side bun with pearl earrings, red lipstick and a stiff evening clutch. Serena wears a floor-length black sequined gown with a modest mesh neckline, metallic heels and long statement earrings, big waves, glowing skin and smoky brown eyes. Strapless bodices slip on a long night unless they have boning or a silicone grip at the top edge, so I check that first. Printed gala invitations are an easy prop.
13. Serena And Blair White Party Costume

All-white is harder than it looks, because the only thing telling the characters apart is shape and texture. Blair wears a structured white lace midi with a fitted waist, a pearl belt, nude pumps, a white satin headband, a top-handle bag, pearl studs, soft curls and pink lipstick. Serena wears a draped ivory mini under a cream blazer, metallic ankle boots, layered gold necklaces and a champagne-coloured clutch, with beachy texture and golden eye makeup. Leave drinks props out of it entirely. Small white flower wristlets tie the two together. I'd pack a stain pen, too. White shows every drop of punch.
14. Serena And Blair Paris Costume

Paris lets you dress up without looking theatrical. Blair wears a red fit-and-flare dress under a navy cape coat, patterned tights, black pumps, a beret-style headband, pearl earrings, a structured handbag and glossy curls. Serena wears a striped boatneck top, high-waisted cream trousers, a cropped leather jacket, tan ankle boots, layered necklaces, a long scarf and a relaxed bag, her waves blown about. A folded museum map or a sketchbook sets the city. I keep Blair's reds and navies matched exactly and let Serena's neutrals drift, because that difference is what keeps them apart.
15. Serena And Blair Hamptons Costume

If you live somewhere warm, or you're going to a daytime event, the Hamptons version is a good one to have. Blair wears a lemon-yellow sundress with a fitted waist, a cropped white cardigan, low wedge sandals and a printed silk headband, plus pearl studs, a woven top-handle bag, defined curls and coral lipstick. Serena wears a flowing white maxi under a light denim vest, flat metallic sandals and layered gold, with tousled waves, bronzer and an oversized straw tote. Sunglasses and a rolled beach towel are the props. I'd leave swimwear out of it so you're comfortable all evening.
16. Serena And Blair Yacht Club Costume

Nautical styling is fun, but I steer people away from anything that looks like a real officer's uniform. Blair wears a navy-and-white fit-and-flare dress, a red cropped jacket, a white headband, navy flats, pearl earrings, a structured bag, glossy curls and a red lip. Serena wears white wide-leg trousers, a loose striped blouse, a camel belt and a navy blazer with the sleeves pushed up, plus platform sandals, gold chains, a soft tote and textured waves. A sailor cap or a paper boarding pass is enough of a hint. Both outfits use red, white and navy, but they're cut differently, so the two still look like a pair.
17. Serena And Blair Country Club Costume

Country club pieces are comfortable for hours, which is why I suggest them for long parties. Blair tucks a pastel polo into a pleated white midi, drapes a cardigan over her shoulders and wears two-tone loafers, a ribbon headband, pearl studs, a structured mini bag and smooth curls. Serena wears a loose sleeveless knit, tailored white shorts, an oversized navy blazer and tall riding-style boots, with gold necklaces, a tote and textured waves. Fresh pink makeup for Blair, warm glow for Serena. A scorecard or an empty racquet cover makes a safe prop.
18. Serena And Blair Tennis Costume

The tennis pair is the one to pick if you'll be dancing. Blair wears a white pleated tennis dress edged in navy, a fitted cardigan, white ankle socks, court sneakers, a navy headband, pearl earrings and a mini backpack, with a polished ponytail curled at the ends. Serena wears a loose white polo, a pleated mini, a light zip jacket and high-top sneakers, with fine gold necklaces and a relaxed ponytail that leaves waves around her face. Pleated tennis skirts flip up when you move, so I'd add shorts underneath. Soft foam balls are safer to carry than real ones.
19. Serena And Blair Ice Skating Costume

Knitwear makes this a practical costume for anyone trick-or-treating with kids on a cold street. Blair wears a red skater dress over a cream turtleneck, opaque white tights and lace-up ankle boots that pass for skates, with a jeweled headband, pearl studs, fitted gloves and a short structured coat. Serena wears a silver sweater dress, thick gray tights, slouchy winter boots, an oversized cream coat, layered necklaces and a soft scarf, with loose waves. I never let anyone carry real skates. Blade covers or a rink ticket get the idea across without anyone getting cut.
20. Serena And Blair Fall Coffee Run Costume

A coffee run is the costume most people can build tonight from a fall wardrobe. Blair wears a plaid mini dress over a cream blouse, burgundy tights, loafers and a fitted camel coat, with a velvet headband, pearls, a structured satchel, glossy curls and berry lipstick. Serena layers a long gray sweater over black leggings and adds a beaten-up leather jacket, brown knee boots, gold necklaces and a big hobo bag, her waves windswept. Write each character's initial on a reusable cup. If anyone's confused, that's usually what tells them who you are.
21. Serena And Blair Shopping Costume

Shopping bags are the cheapest prop on this list and one of the clearest. Blair wears a bright printed blouse with a navy A-line skirt, coloured tights, pointed pumps and a tailored coat, plus a bow headband, pearl studs, a structured handbag and careful curls. Serena wears a shimmering tank, dark skinny jeans, a cropped jacket and slouchy heeled boots, with layered gold, a long scarf, a roomy bag and loose waves. Fill plain paper bags with tissue so they hold their shape. I pick bags with no brand names on them. Otherwise you look like you're advertising something.
22. Serena And Blair Fashion Week Costume

Fashion week is the version where outerwear does the talking. Blair wears a dramatic patterned coat over a fitted jewel-tone dress, opaque tights and pointed pumps, with a wide embellished headband, pearl earrings, a stiff handbag, sleek curls, sharp eyeliner and berry lipstick. Serena wears metallic trousers, a silky camisole, a long tailored blazer and heeled ankle boots, bold necklaces and an oversized clutch, her waves big and messy. A blank lanyard badge is a better prop than a schedule, because people can read it from across a crowded room.
23. Serena And Blair Magazine Office Costume

The magazine office version is what I'd suggest for a school or workplace party where you have to sit at a desk in it. Blair wears a bow-neck blouse, a fitted pencil skirt, a cropped jacket, patterned tights, low pumps, a slim headband, pearl earrings and a structured tote, with glossy curls and pink lipstick. Serena tucks a satin blouse loosely into wide-leg trousers and adds a long vest, heeled ankle boots, gold necklaces and an oversized portfolio. Sketchbooks or mock page layouts make good props. I'd keep both skirts at a length you'd normally wear to work, with lower heels.
24. Serena And Blair College Campus Costume

College-era Blair and Serena look less like a uniform, which suits campus parties. Blair tucks a printed silk blouse into a tweed mini and adds opaque tights, heeled loafers, a fitted wool coat, a padded headband, pearl studs, a leather satchel and controlled curls. Serena pairs a loose knit sweater with dark skinny jeans, a cropped leather jacket and tall suede boots, plus layered necklaces, a patterned scarf, a big tote and textured waves. Blair's makeup stays classic and rosy and Serena's stays golden. A planner is the only prop I'd bother with.
25. Serena And Blair Airport Costume

Travel clothes are about the easiest thing to stand around in for a long night, and both characters have a clear airport look. Blair wears a navy wrap dress under a belted camel coat, opaque tights, ballet flats and a silk headband, with pearls, a structured carry-on bag, smooth curls and pink makeup. Serena wears black leggings, a long cream sweater, a leather jacket, an oversized scarf and knee boots, gold necklaces and a big tote with sunglasses tucked in. Two rolling suitcases and printed boarding passes are funny props. They're also a pain on stairs, so leave them home if the party's at a walk-up.
26. Serena And Blair Rooftop Party Costume

A rooftop party means wind and standing for hours, so I'd plan the shoes first. Blair wears a fitted burgundy mini with a jeweled neckline, opaque tights, black pumps, a tailored cape, a crystal headband and a compact clutch, with polished curls and berry lipstick. Serena wears a draped gold sequined dress, an oversized black blazer and heeled ankle boots, layered metallic necklaces, a soft clutch and big waves. A cape catches the wind, so I'd pin it at the shoulder seam. A phone showing a made-up gossip post is a prop people will get right away.
27. Serena And Blair Birthday Party Costume

Birthday colours let Blair go full pink without losing her edges. She wears a pink fit-and-flare dress with a satin waist bow, a cropped cardigan, patterned tights and Mary Jane heels, plus a jeweled headband, pearl earrings, a small gift-box purse, curls and rosy lipstick. Serena wears a silver draped mini under a blush blazer, metallic ankle boots and layered gold, with full, loose waves and a luminous finish. Wrapped boxes or paper invitations are the props. Pink and silver connect the two, and her sparkle against Blair's bow still keeps them apart.
28. Serena And Blair Sparkling Party Costume

This one works at almost any holiday party because it isn't tied to a holiday. Blair wears an emerald velvet dress with a fitted waist, black tights, jeweled pumps and a gold padded headband, with pearl drops, a structured clutch, smooth curls and red lipstick. Serena wears a bronze sequined jumpsuit with a relaxed neckline, a fitted black blazer, heeled ankle boots, fine gold chains and tousled waves. Velvet crushes when you sit on it for hours, and sequins scratch the inside of the arm, so I'd give Serena a soft cami and keep the blazer on. Metallic envelopes make easy props.
29. Serena And Blair Wedding Guest Costume

Wedding guest dressing is refined and needs nothing theatrical. Blair wears a floral tea-length dress with a defined waist, a cropped jacket, nude pumps and a satin headband, with pearl earrings, a structured clutch, soft curls and rosy lipstick. Serena wears a flowing jewel-tone maxi with a draped neckline, metallic sandals and layered gold, relaxed waves and neutral gloss. Leave white dresses out of it so nobody reads you as the bride. A small silk bouquet or a blank program is plenty. Blair's prim floral against Serena's loose maxi does the rest.
30. Serena And Blair Bridesmaid Costume

Bridesmaid dresses are easy to find secondhand, and they're one of the most forgiving ways to give each friend her own shape. Blair wears a pale blue tea-length dress with a fitted bodice and satin bow belt, a pearl necklace, low pumps and a floral headband, with arranged curls, rosy cheeks and pink lipstick. Serena wears a flowing yellow halter, metallic sandals, long drop earrings and fine bracelets, loose waves and golden makeup. Tie matching white-and-yellow silk bouquets with blue ribbon. A printed ceremony card with made-up names helps if people need more of a hint. I'd save this one for warmer weather.
31. Serena And Blair Royal Wedding Costume

Blair always wanted the royal wedding, so give her one and put Serena beside her as the attendant who looks better than the bride. Blair wears a pale blue ball gown with a fitted bodice, a full skirt and a crystal belt, silver pumps, a small tiara-style headband, pearl earrings, gloves, curls and classic pink makeup. Serena wears a floor-length gold dress with a draped neckline, metallic heels, layered jewelry and a slim floral comb, her waves relaxed. A full skirt needs a petticoat to keep its shape, and the petticoat is what makes you hot, so I'd pick a light net one. Keep the tiara small.
32. Serena And Blair Finale Wedding Costume

For the finale look, I treat both characters as grown-ups and polish Serena more than usual. Blair wears a fitted navy lace dress with a short hem over opaque tights, pointed pumps, a sparkling headband, pearl drop earrings, a compact clutch, sleek curls and berry lipstick. Serena wears a gold column gown, metallic sandals, long earrings and a simple bracelet stack, with smoothed waves instead of her usual rough texture. A folded program is enough. You don't need exact copies of what they wore on screen, because navy and gold read clearly as these two.
33. Serena And Blair 2000s Party Costume

The 2000s version is the most fun to style, because the era did half the work. Blair wears a puff-sleeve blouse tucked into a high-waisted mini, coloured tights, patent flats and a cropped cape, with a wide headband, pearl studs, a structured bag, glossy curls and bright pink lipstick. Serena wears a long metallic tank over skinny jeans, a fitted leather jacket and slouchy suede boots, lots of long necklaces, a huge hobo bag and heavily textured waves, plus bronzer and lip gloss. A flip-phone prop is the detail that makes everyone at the party laugh.
34. Serena And Blair Black And White Costume

Black and white is my pick for friends shopping from their own closets. Blair wears a white bow blouse with a black fit-and-flare skirt, patterned tights, patent pumps and a black velvet headband, plus pearl earrings, a structured mini bag, neat curls and red lipstick. Serena wears a loose white satin shirt over fitted black pants with a cropped black jacket and heeled ankle boots, mixing silver and gold necklaces the way the character does. With only two colours, the shapes have to be different. Two black-and-white envelopes make the props.
35. Serena And Blair Red And Gold Costume

Red and gold photograph strongly even in a dim room. Blair goes monochrome in a structured crimson midi with a defined waist, gold pumps, a red satin headband, pearl-and-gold earrings, a small top-handle bag, glossy curls and red lipstick matched to the dress. Serena throws a deep red oversized coat over a flowing gold mini, adds metallic ankle boots and layered gold, big waves and warm shimmer. A compact mirror is a nice prop for Blair. I try to match her red lip to the dress in daylight before the party, because two reds that almost match look worse than two that clearly don't.
36. Serena And Blair Pastel Costume

Pastels make a sweet daytime version. Blair wears a lavender fit-and-flare dress, a pale pink cardigan, cream tights, lilac ballet flats, a floral headband, pearl studs, a structured handbag and soft curls. Serena wears a powder-blue satin blouse, white wide-leg trousers, a blush jacket, metallic sandals, fine gold necklaces and a cream bag, with airy waves and pale pink gloss. Match Blair's pastels closely and let Serena's clash a little. Pastel notebooks or a small bunch of silk flowers are the props.
37. Serena And Blair Jewel Tone Costume

Jewel tones are the grown-up alternative to the uniform and the pale formalwear. Blair wears a sapphire velvet dress with a fitted waist, emerald tights, black pumps and a jeweled navy headband, with pearl earrings, a structured clutch, defined curls and berry lipstick. Serena wears an amethyst satin jumpsuit under a long teal coat, metallic heels and layered gold, loose waves and bronzer. With colours this strong, I repeat one shade in both outfits, a teal clutch for Blair maybe, so the pair don't look like they came separately. Save this version for a dressy indoor party.
38. Serena And Blair Statement Coat Costume

When it's cold enough that nobody will see what's under your coat, make the coats the costume. Blair wears a fitted red coat over a cream blouse and patterned skirt, with opaque tights, polished pumps, a matching headband, pearl earrings, gloves and a structured bag. Serena wears an oversized camel coat over a metallic top and skinny black pants, slouchy knee boots, long necklaces, a printed scarf and a soft shoulder bag. I'd button Blair all the way and leave Serena's coat hanging open; that alone says who is who. A folded invitation is enough to carry outdoors.
39. Serena And Blair Classic Movie Costume

Old-film elegance is Blair's favourite fantasy, and Serena can borrow the same mood in a looser shape. Blair wears a sleeveless black midi, a pearl necklace, elbow-length gloves, kitten heels and an oversized jeweled headband, with a polished updo, winged liner and soft pink lipstick. Serena wears a fluid champagne maxi with a cream wrap, metallic sandals and long gold earrings, brushed waves and neutral gloss. Slim black sunglasses and a pastry box tie them back to that famous breakfast-at-a-window scene. Long gloves slide down unless they fit snugly above the elbow, so I check that first.
40. Serena And Blair Sleepover Costume

Sleepover outfits are the comfiest of the lot, and they're fine for a dorm or house party. Blair wears a matching pink pajama set with piped trim, a satin robe, velvet slippers and a padded headband, with smooth curls, light rosy makeup, pearl studs and a structured makeup case. Serena wears a loose gray lounge set under an oversized cream cardigan with soft ankle boots, layered necklaces, a slouchy tote and messy waves. If you'll be walking outside at all, wear the ankle boots, not slippers. A fashion magazine and a bowl of wrapped candy are good props.
41. Serena And Blair Last Minute Costume

Last-minute is honestly how most people end up doing this duo, and it works because the hair and accessories carry it. Blair needs a white blouse, a dark pleated skirt, coloured tights, black flats and any fitted cardigan or blazer, plus a fabric headband, pearl earrings, a structured purse, curls and pink lipstick. Serena needs a loose white shirt, a short dark skirt, tall boots, a leather-look jacket, several necklaces and a soft bag. If you don't own a curling tool, braid damp hair before bed and you'll get her waves by morning. Paper ties printed at home take ten minutes.
42. Serena And Blair Thrifted Costume

At the thrift store I shop by shape and colour, never labels. For Blair, look for a fitted blouse, an A-line plaid skirt, a cropped cardigan, coloured tights, low pumps and a stiff handbag, then add a ribbon headband, faux pearls, neat curls and rosy lipstick. For Serena, find an oversized blazer, a shimmering cami, skinny pants, slouchy boots and a big soft bag, then pile on secondhand necklaces and loose waves. Check thrifted skirts for a working zip before you buy. Pick pieces you'd wear again, and take up hems and sleeves where needed.
43. Plus Size Serena And Blair Costume

For plus-size friends, I build the duo around pieces that fit properly instead of chasing one exact silhouette from the show. Blair wears a stretch ponte fit-and-flare dress over a collared blouse, with opaque tights, wide-fit loafers, a tailored cardigan, a comfortable padded headband, pearl studs and a structured crossbody. Serena wears a soft draped blouse, high-rise trousers, a longline blazer and wide-calf knee boots or heeled ankle boots, with adjustable necklaces and a relaxed bag. Many padded headbands pinch behind the ears after an hour, so I'd look for one with a soft-ended band. Breathable fabric and a waistband you can sit in will keep you comfortable all night.
44. Modest Serena And Blair Costume

Longer hems and more layers still capture both characters. Blair wears a high-neck cream blouse tucked into a plaid midi, opaque tights, loafers and a fitted navy coat, plus a satin headband, pearl earrings, a structured tote, glossy curls and berry lipstick. Serena wears a loose metallic blouse, wide-leg black trousers, a long camel blazer and ankle boots, gold necklaces over the blouse and a soft bag, with relaxed waves. Colour, texture, hair and accessories do the work that short skirts usually do. Books or invitation cards are the props.
45. Gender Inclusive Serena And Blair Costume

Anyone can play either role, because what really matters is polished against carefree, not a particular garment. The Blair side wears a crisp white shirt, a fitted navy blazer, plaid trousers or a pleated skirt, burgundy socks and polished loafers, with a red headband or ribbon, a pearl pin, a structured satchel, a neat brunette wig or hairstyle and precise makeup. The Serena side wears a loose white shirt, slim black pants or a plaid skirt, a leather-look jacket and tall boots, with layered gold, a relaxed bag and a textured blonde wig or waves. I'd let each person pick the clothing they're comfortable in and keep the contrast in how they wear it.
Wigs for the Friend Who Won't Dye Her Hair
Most pairs don't happen to have one brunette and one blonde, so one of you will probably need a wig. For Blair, I look for a shoulder-length or slightly longer brown wig with a soft wave already set into it. Heat-friendly synthetic fibre lets you add a few curls with a low-heat tool. Standard synthetic fibre frizzes or melts if the iron is too hot, so check the label before you touch it.
Serena is easier, because her hair is meant to look messy. A long blonde wig with a darker root looks far more like real hair than one flat shade of yellow. I'd brush it out with a wide-toothed comb, not a brush, and finger-twist a few pieces around the face. Cheap wigs shed and tangle at the nape where they rub on a collar, so a little silicone spray there before you go out saves the back from matting.
Making the headband sit on a wig
A padded headband slides backward on a slippery wig. I fix it with two bobby pins crossed in an X behind each ear, pushed through the wig cap. On real hair, a strip of grip tape or a thin elastic sewn along the inside of the band does the same job. Test it by shaking your head hard in front of the mirror before you leave. If the band moves, it'll be sitting behind your ears within an hour of dancing.
Blair Gets the Headband, Serena Gets the Boots
Each version above works for the same reason: the two outfits contrast clearly, but enough details match that they read as a pair. Blair needs structure, glossy brunette hair, tidy makeup and a headband. Serena needs blonde waves, glowing skin, layered jewelry, a soft bag and boots. The school uniform is the easiest place to start, and the coats, gowns and travel looks give you somewhere to go next year. Wear shoes you can stand in, set hems for the event, carry props you won't mind holding all night, and let each friend play her character her own way.
