1. Start#

Packing for the beach is the fun part until you're staring at a suitcase that has to cover swims, long walks in town and a couple of nicer dinners. The answer is outfits that move between those settings with a swap of shoes or a cover-up, built from fabrics that cope with heat, salt and a crushed bag. Below are 40 complete beach looks, each styled head to toe, with notes on how the pieces behave once you're actually there: what wrinkles, what dries fast and what holds up to sand.
1. Bikini With Sheer White Sarong

A white sarong tied at the hip over a black bikini is the simplest high-contrast cover-up there is. Flat leather sandals with a little gold, a wide-brim straw hat and a raffia tote that fits sunscreen and a paperback finish it. I tie the sarong on the side where I'll be sitting least, so the knot isn't under me on a lounger. Cotton voile sarongs dry in minutes; thicker rayon stays damp and clings if you go in wet.
2. Flowy Floral Maxi Dress

A lightweight floral maxi in cotton or rayon, with a smocked bodice and tiered skirt, catches a breeze and doesn't cling. Flat tan slides, a straw crossbody, round sunglasses and gold hoops are all it needs. Smocking stretches, so it fits across a range of sizes, which is handy if you bloat on a flight. Rayon wrinkles badly in a suitcase, though, so hang it in a steamy bathroom the first night.
3. Crochet Cover-Up Over White One-Piece

A white plunge one-piece with a high-cut leg under an open-stitch cream crochet cover-up turns a swimsuit into the base of an outfit. Brown leather slides, layered gold chains and tortoiseshell sunglasses keep it warm and natural, and a sandy canvas tote won't fight the crochet. Check the white swimsuit is lined; many go see-through when wet. Crochet also stretches when soaked, so take it off before swimming.
4. Linen Button-Down Shirt With Linen Shorts

A matching linen shirt and shorts in sand or oatmeal is the set I pack first. The shirt goes open over a white bandeau or bikini top, the high-waisted shorts end a few inches above the knee, and woven espadrilles with flat soles handle the boardwalk. A rattan bag and vintage-style sunglasses finish it. Linen creases the moment you sit down; I count that as part of the look and don't bother ironing on holiday.
5. Off-Shoulder Sundress With Wedge Sandals

An off-shoulder white cotton sundress with a ruffled neckline and elastic waist is breathable and easy for dinner. Midi length keeps it practical. Tan wedge espadrilles give height without sinking into sand or catching on boardwalk gaps the way a stiletto would. Gold drops and a small straw clutch finish it. Off-shoulder necklines slide up when you lift your arms, so a strip of silicone tape or a strapless bra with grip keeps it in place.
6. Cropped Linen Co-Ord Set

A terracotta or clay linen two-piece, boxy cropped top with high-waisted wide-leg trousers, gives a defined waist and a relaxed feel. Flat camel sandals, slim oval sunglasses, thin gold bracelets and a wooden-handle bag add detail without adding color. I check the gap between top and waistband standing and sitting; cropped linen rides up more than knit does. It moves from beach club lunch to a gallery without changing.
7. Sheer Kimono Over High-Waisted Bikini

A floor-length sheer kimono in a bright tropical print over a solid high-waisted bikini turns swimwear into an outfit. The long panels catch the wind, and the high-waisted bottoms give coverage with a retro feel. Platform flip-flops, a shell necklace kept small, aviators and a macramé tote finish it for days spent poolside. Floor-length kimonos drag on wet pool decks, so I'd hem yours or pick one that ends at the ankle.
8. White Eyelet Midi Dress

A crisp white eyelet midi with a scalloped hem and small puff sleeves has built-in texture, so it needs very little added. Cognac flat sandals warm up the white, a bamboo-handle bag adds a vintage note, and pearl studs with a thin chain keep it refined. Eyelet holes catch on bracelets and bag straps, so smooth jewelry is safer. Wear it for brunch or a sunset walk.
9. Ribbed Knit Midi Dress With Sneakers

A sleeveless ribbed knit midi in oat or latte stretches with you, which makes it my pick for travel days. White low sneakers, a denim jacket over the shoulders for the evening breeze, a nylon belt bag and cat-eye sunglasses finish it. Rib knits cling, so if that bothers you, size up once. A cotton-rich knit stays cooler than a polyester one, which can feel sticky in humid airports.
10. Halter-Neck One-Piece With Wide-Leg Pants

A deep navy halter one-piece with a low back works as a bodysuit when tucked into cream wide-leg linen trousers with a thin brown belt. Matching brown flat sandals, square sunglasses and a raffia tote with leather handles carry everything for a full day. The catch: a swimsuit as a bodysuit means undoing everything for the bathroom, so I'd save this for a lunch rather than a long day out.
11. Cotton Jumpsuit With Flat Sandals

A sleeveless khaki or olive cotton jumpsuit with a belted waist and cropped wide legs is one-and-done and still deliberate. Braided brown slides suit the earthy color, a long pendant draws the eye down the body, and retro round sunglasses with a woven bucket bag keep it from looking too utilitarian. Look for a jumpsuit with a long enough body; a short torso pulls uncomfortably every time you sit on a low beach chair.
12. Striped Shirt Dress With Slide Sandals

A blue and white striped cotton shirt dress is the most flexible piece I pack: open over a swimsuit as a cover-up, buttoned and belted with a tan strap for lunch. Brown cushioned slides, a navy canvas tote, thin gold hoops and wayfarer sunglasses complete the seaside look. Cotton shirting wrinkles but steams out quickly, and it breathes far better in heat than a polyester version.
13. Boho Crochet Top With Denim Shorts

A cream crochet halter with high-rise distressed denim shorts brings laid-back festival energy to the coast. Brown leather gladiator sandals, beaded bracelets and a long pendant add a boho feel, and a tan suede fringe crossbody brings a Western touch. Suede is a poor choice anywhere near spray or wet sand; it darkens and stiffens when wet, so I'd swap in a smooth leather or woven fringe bag for a beach bonfire.
14. One-Shoulder Ruffled Maxi Dress

A one-shoulder chiffon or georgette maxi in coral or tangerine, with a ruffle running down the diagonal neckline, is the bold evening option. Metallic gold heeled sandals and a gold clutch take it to a sit-down dinner by the water, with chandelier earrings and a low bun. Choose block heels if dinner is on a deck or lawn. Coral is flattering against tanned skin and reads well in golden-hour light.
15. Sporty Rashguard With Board Shorts

A long-sleeve zip rashguard with high-waisted black board shorts is the active outfit for swimming, paddleboarding and volleyball. Sun protection is the real reason to wear one: look for a UPF rating on the label, because a plain tee loses much of its protection once wet. Adjustable sport sandals grip wet surfaces, polarized sunglasses cut glare off the water, and a dry bag backpack keeps your phone safe. Add a cap for midday.
16. Tiered Cotton Sundress With Espadrilles

A tiered mini sundress in butter yellow or a soft gingham, with a square neck and tie straps, is cheerful and easy to adjust. Beige espadrille wedges, a mini straw basket bag and white cat-eye sunglasses give it a retro feel for morning walks and ice cream runs. Tie straps let you shorten the bodice if it gapes, which helps on smaller busts. A tiered skirt also lifts in wind, so I'd pair it with shorts underneath on breezy days.
17. Bandeau Bikini With High-Waisted Linen Shorts

A turquoise or emerald bandeau bikini top with beige high-waisted linen shorts is a tidy beach outfit that moves straight to a boardwalk lunch. A bandeau leaves the shoulders clear, which avoids strap tan lines. Tan flip-flops, a large woven bag for towel and sunscreen, round sunglasses and thin bangles finish it. Bandeaus without silicone grip slide down when you duck under a wave, so check the inner band before you buy.
18. Satin Slip Dress For Beach Dinner

A champagne or rose gold satin slip with lace at the hem is evening wear for a beach trip. Bias-cut satin drapes and catches low light, but it shows sweat and creases easily, so I roll rather than fold it in the suitcase. Strappy metallic heels, a beaded clutch, fine chains and crystal drops are plenty. Bring a light cream wrap; the breeze off the water cools faster than you'd expect after sunset.
19. Tie-Front Shirt With Wide-Leg Linen Trousers

A white cotton shirt knotted at the waist over a triangle bikini, with flowing beige wide-leg linen trousers, gives a defined waist with coverage when you want it. Brown T-strap flats, a cognac circle bag, gold aviators and a silk scarf around a low ponytail add a vintage travel feel. Knot the shirt at your natural waist, the narrowest point, rather than low on the hips, so the trousers' high rise stays visible.
20. Smocked Bodice Floral Maxi Dress

A floral maxi with a shirred bodice and short puff sleeves fits a range of shapes because the shirring stretches. The full skirt moves well for long walks, with flat tan sandals, a straw tote with pom-poms, beaded necklaces and round sunglasses. Shirring can lose its stretch if tumble-dried hot, so line-dry this one. It's good for coastal villages, markets and dinner outdoors.
21. Kimono Wrap Cover-Up Over Bikini

A kimono-style cover-up in indigo and white batik wraps and ties at the side, making a V-neck and an uneven hem over a simple black bikini. Gold ankle-strap flats, gold hoops, thin bangles and a rattan box bag finish it. Natural indigo dye can bleed when wet, especially in the first few wears, so keep it away from white swimwear until you've washed it once.
22. Classic White Sundress With Tan Accessories

A white cotton sundress with thin adjustable straps and a relaxed A-line is one of the hardest-working things in a beach suitcase. Tan gladiator sandals, a tan crossbody and a wide-brim raffia hat make a warm-neutral accent set, with wooden bead earrings for texture. White reflects heat, but it also shows sunscreen stains, so I put sunscreen on and let it sink in for ten minutes before dressing.
23. Tropical Print Co-Ord Set

A tropical leaf print crop top with a matching A-line wrap midi skirt suits the setting without trying. Nude flat sandals let the print lead, and small gold shell earrings with a natural woven clutch keep the theme tasteful. Bold prints hide wrinkles and small stains well, which makes them practical on holiday. The two pieces also split up: the skirt goes with a white tee, the top with denim shorts.
24. Denim Shorts With White Eyelet Blouse

Medium-wash high-rise denim shorts with a white cotton eyelet blouse, short puff sleeves and a sweetheart neck, are casual and pretty for exploring town. Braided brown slides, a cream canvas backpack and small gold studs keep it simple. Denim is heavy and slow to dry, so this one is for a town day, not a day where you might get splashed.
25. Strapless Maxi Dress With Statement Earrings

A strapless seafoam or pistachio maxi with an internal grip lining stays up and gives a clean shoulder line, with a fitted bodice into a gathered skirt. Silver flat sandals, oversized marbled resin earrings, a silver cuff and a metallic clutch make it evening-ready for a beach wedding or anniversary dinner. Always check the grip band before trusting a strapless dress for a whole evening of dancing.
26. Crochet Midi Dress Over Swimsuit

A sleeveless ecru crochet midi with a deep V and side slits works as a cover-up over a nude or white bikini and as a dress in its own right. Woven tan sandals, a shell pendant, brass bangles, a macramé bag and tortoiseshell sunglasses keep it natural. Crochet stretches and sags when hung wet, so dry it flat on a towel. Wear a slip underneath if you want it as a restaurant dress.
27. Nautical Stripe Top With White Shorts

A navy and white striped boatneck in light cotton jersey with crisp white tailored shorts is classic maritime dressing. Three-quarter sleeves cover the forearms from sun, and red flat espadrilles add a cheerful note. A navy rope-handle tote and small gold knot earrings keep the theme light rather than literal. It suits a harbor walk or a sailing excursion; on a boat, grippy soles matter more than looks.
28. Ruffled Mini Dress With Ankle-Tie Sandals

A bright chiffon mini with a ruffled hem and flutter sleeves floats as you move. Tan ankle-tie sandals draw attention to the legs, and a woven circle bag with gold chandelier earrings dresses it for evening. A coral lip pulls the palette together. Chiffon minis lift in wind more than heavier fabric, so I'd keep this for sheltered sunset drinks rather than a windy pier.
29. Lightweight Cardigan Over Tank And Linen Trousers

A fine-gauge oatmeal cardigan over a white ribbed tank with beige linen wide-leg trousers is what I wear once the sun goes down and the sea breeze picks up. Tan low block-heel mules, a raffia top-handle bag, layered gold necklaces and slim sunglasses finish it. A fine knit adds warmth without bulk; a chunky one would overheat you the moment you step inside a restaurant.
30. Convertible Sarong Maxi Dress

A multi-way sarong maxi in batik or ikat ties as a halter, strapless or one-shoulder, so one piece covers beach, drinks and dinner. Light, quick-drying fabric handles saltwater and humidity. Flat gold sandals, gold hoops and a neutral woven tote keep the focus on the print. These take practice to tie, so I try each style at home before the trip, not in a hotel room ten minutes before a reservation.
31. Polo Shirt With Chino Shorts

A relaxed white cotton polo with an open collar and khaki chino shorts is preppy and sporty for resort activities or golf. Navy canvas sneakers, a brown leather belt, wayfarer sunglasses and a leather-strap watch keep it clean, and a navy backpack frees your hands. White polos show sweat at the collar after a day in the sun, so pack two if you plan to wear this more than once.
32. Sheer Mesh Cover-Up Dress Over Bikini

A full-length sheer black mesh cover-up with long sleeves and an open front over a black bikini is dramatic and modern. Black flat slides keep the line long, and layered silver chains with chunky silver hoops add edge. A structured black beach bag and oversized dark sunglasses finish it for a beach club day. Black mesh absorbs heat in full sun, so it's best in shade or late afternoon.
33. Wrap Dress With Heeled Sandals

A true wrap dress in fuchsia or cobalt, three-quarter sleeves and knee length, suits most shapes because you set the waist yourself. The V-neck lengthens the neck, and tan block heels handle cobblestones and sandy paths. A leather clutch and sculptural gold earrings make it dinner-ready. Jersey or crepe resists wrinkles and packs small. Wrap dresses can open in wind, so a discreet safety pin at the cross point helps.
34. Linen Vest And Matching Shorts Set

A tailored oatmeal linen vest open over a white bandeau with matching high-waisted linen shorts is a summer suit for resort lunches and gallery visits. Tan flat sandals, a structured brown crossbody, gold chain-link earrings and a low bun keep the focus on the clean lines, and slim black sunglasses add contrast. The vest needs to fit at the bust; if it gapes, wear it buttoned over the bandeau instead.
35. High-Neck One-Piece With Wrap Skirt

A high-neck one-piece in chocolate or burgundy with a low back makes a sleek base for a printed sarong tied at the hip as a maxi skirt. Flat gold sandals and thin bangles warm the dark color, and a woven fan clutch with cat-eye sunglasses adds a vintage note. A high neck gives more coverage and support at the bust, and it works as a bodysuit when you go from pool to restaurant terrace.
36. Poplin Puff-Sleeve Blouse With Denim Shorts

A white poplin blouse with big puff sleeves and a square neck over medium-wash cutoffs balances romantic and casual. Lace-up brown gladiators, a beaded straw circle bag, gold button earrings and a woven belt finish it. Poplin is crisp and breathable, but those sleeves crush in a packed suitcase; I stuff them with tissue or pack the blouse on top.
37. All-White Resort Ensemble

Head-to-toe white looks expensive at a resort. A white halter bodysuit or swim top in white wide-leg trousers, under a sheer white fringed kimono, with white leather sandals with gold hardware, is the full set. Gold necklaces, cream and gold bangles and a natural raffia tote add depth to one color. Mixing different whites (ivory, cream, optic) can look mismatched, so I keep them all the same shade or deliberately different.
38. Off-Shoulder Maxi Dress With Clutch

An emerald or sapphire off-shoulder maxi with a smocked bodice and floor-length hem is evening wear for the shoreline. Gold or silver heeled sandals, a metallic clutch and crystal teardrops catch the light, and a pashmina covers your shoulders when the temperature drops. Floor-length hems collect sand on a beach dinner, so have it hemmed to clear the ground in the heels you'll wear. Deep jewel tones flatter most skin tones after a few days of sun.
39. Matching Knit Lounge Set For Travel

A coordinated knit lounge set in sage or dusty blue, relaxed crewneck and wide-leg pants, makes the travel day comfortable. A white tank underneath lets you shed the sweater when you land somewhere hot. White sneakers, a large canvas tote, oval sunglasses and a scrunchie finish it. A cotton-blend knit breathes better than fleece on a warm arrival. The set doubles as an evening layer on breezy nights.
40. Beach-To-Dinner Convertible Shirtdress
A mango or coral poplin shirtdress with a matching belt is a day-to-night piece: open over a bikini with flat sandals and a straw tote, then buttoned, belted and paired with heeled espadrilles for dinner. Gold statement earrings and a wristlet clutch dress it up. Roll the sleeves by day, wear them down at night. Pure cotton poplin does crease, but it breathes in humidity far better than a synthetic.
Packing a Week of These Looks in a Carry-On
Forty outfits is inspiration, not a packing list. For a seven-day beach trip I pack around twelve to fourteen pieces that all share one palette, then build the looks from them. A typical version, built around white, sand and one accent color:
- Two swimsuits, so one can dry while you wear the other.
- One sarong and one shirt or shirtdress to use as cover-ups.
- A linen shirt and matching shorts or trousers, which also split into separate outfits.
- Two sundresses or maxis, one casual and one that works for dinner.
- A tank, a tee and a light cardigan for evenings.
- Three pairs of shoes at most: flat sandals, a dressier sandal or espadrille wedge, and sneakers that you travel in.
Roll knits and linen, fold structured pieces flat on top, and wear the bulkiest items on the plane. Swimsuits weigh almost nothing, so pack them in a zip bag that can carry them home wet.
Sunscreen, Salt and Sand on Your Clothes
Beach trips are rough on fabric in ways city trips aren't. A few habits keep your clothes looking as good on day seven as they did on day one.
- Some sunscreen ingredients leave yellow or orange marks on white fabric, especially after washing in hard water. Let sunscreen absorb before dressing, and treat marks quickly with a little dish soap rather than hot water.
- Rinse swimsuits in fresh water after every swim. Chlorine and salt break down elastic and fade color.
- Never wring a swimsuit; roll it in a towel and press the water out, then dry it in the shade.
- Shake sand out of linen and crochet before packing, because grit wears fibers as the suitcase moves.
Hot Sand, Wet Rocks and What Goes on Your Feet
Footwear is where beach outfits most often fail in practice. Dry sand at midday can get hot enough to burn bare soles, so I never rely on going barefoot from the car park. Leather sandals look best in town but stiffen and darken after a soaking in seawater, so I keep them for dry days and evenings.
- Rubber or EVA slides and flip-flops for the sand itself; they rinse clean and dry in minutes.
- Sport sandals or water shoes with a grippy sole for rocky beaches, tide pools and boat decks.
- Espadrilles for dinners on a dry terrace only. The jute sole soaks up water and can lose its shape.
- Wedges over stilettos for any event on grass, boards or sand.
Three Colors and a Half-Empty Suitcase
A beach suitcase works best when every piece agrees with every other. Stick to linen, cotton and light knits in a palette of three or four colors, and you'll find the cover-ups, sandals and bags cross between outfits without any thought. Pack one evening dress, one travel set and the rest as mix-and-match separates, then leave space for whatever you buy there.
