Skirts are easier to wear in autumn than people expect, because the cool weather finally gives you a reason to add boots, tights and a proper knit. I style skirts all year, and the fall ones are my favorites to put together: satin against wool, suede with cable knits, denim with a cardigan. Below are fifteen skirt outfits, from a pleated midi with sneakers for weekday errands to a skirt suit for the office. With each I've noted the length, fabric or fit detail that decides whether it works on you, since the same skirt can look polished on one person and awkward on another just because the hem lands two inches off.

Pairing Skirt Lengths With the Right Boot Height
In autumn, most skirt outfits stand or fall on the space between the hem and the top of the boot. A small change there makes the same skirt look intentional or slightly off. These are the pairings I rely on.
- Mini and above the knee: knee-high or over-the-knee boots, or ankle boots with opaque tights in the same color so the leg reads as one piece.
- Knee length: knee-high boots that meet or tuck just under the hem, or loafers and ankle boots with tights. Mid-calf boots cut the leg at its widest point, so I skip them here.
- Midi, landing mid-calf: tall boots that disappear under the hem by an inch or two. With ankle boots, a slim or pointed shape keeps the gap from looking heavy.
- Maxi: almost anything goes under it, but check the length with the shoes on. The hem should clear the ground by about an inch.
If you're petite, matching tights to boots lengthens the leg more than any heel. If you're tall, midi skirts often land higher than intended on you, so check the length before you buy rather than after.
1. Satin Midi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Satin and a chunky sweater are one of my favorite contrasts, shiny and fluid below, matte and soft above. Chocolate, burgundy or olive satin feels like autumn; black is the easiest to start with. Tuck just the front few inches of the sweater into the waistband so you get a waist without losing the slouch. Pointed ankle boots lengthen the leg; flat boots and a thicker knit make it more casual. Satin creases where you sit and shows every drop of water, so I'd keep it for dry days and hang it straight after wearing. A camel or charcoal wool coat on top.
2. Plaid Midi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Plaid, a turtleneck and tall boots is about as autumn as an outfit gets. I'd pick a skirt with a firm waistband and a gentle A-line so it moves when you walk. A solid black, cream or burgundy turtleneck lets the check do the talking. The key measurement is boot top to hem: with a calf-length skirt the knee-high boot should disappear under it by an inch or two, so no bare leg flashes when you step. Cropped wool jacket or belted trench depending on the forecast. Opaque tights and a thin thermal underneath handle real cold.
3. Denim Maxi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

A denim maxi is the skirt I suggest to people who live in jeans, because it's just as tough and needs no more thought. Dark wash and straight-cut, with a fitted long-sleeve top and a button cardigan worn as a top or half tucked. Rigid denim in a straight maxi can restrict your stride, so look for a back slit or a little stretch. Check the slit before you buy: it should let you climb stairs without hiking the skirt up. Loafers and visible socks on mild days, ankle boots when it gets colder. A suede tote and a light trench finish it.
4. Leather Pencil Skirt Outfit for Autumn

A leather pencil skirt is sharp enough for a meeting and still right for dinner. Knee-length in black, espresso or burgundy, with a fine turtleneck tucked in and an oversized blazer to balance the narrow shape. Before anything else I sit down in it. Real leather doesn't stretch much, and a pencil cut rides up and pulls across the thighs if it's even slightly small, so a back vent or a stretch faux leather is worth looking for. Pointed ankle boots, a top-handle bag, minimal jewelry. Wear the blazer open for a softer line.
5. Suede A-Line Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Suede A-line skirts in caramel, rust or brown with a cream cable-knit sweater make an easy autumn color story. The flared shape moves well and suits most hips because it skims rather than grips. Tall brown boots give a long line; heeled ankle boots leave some space around the hem if you prefer that. Tuck the sweater and add a woven belt. Suede already has depth, so keep accessories simple. I'd spray it with a protector before its first outing, because rain leaves marks on suede, and brush it gently with a suede brush to lift the nap after wear. A long oatmeal coat on cold days.
6. Pleated Midi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Can a pleated skirt feel relaxed enough for an ordinary weekday? Yes, if everything else is plain. A fitted cotton tee, clean sneakers and a trench. Choose a midi in navy, forest green or bronze. A bulky top crushes the pleats at the waist and adds width there, which is why I keep the tee close-fitting and tucked. Narrow knife pleats sit flatter than wide box pleats if you want less volume at the hip. A light cardigan goes under the trench for an extra layer. Crossbody bag, sunglasses, small studs. Early autumn and long walking days suit it most.
7. Black Mini Skirt Outfit for Autumn

A black mini becomes cold-weather clothing with opaque tights, knee-high boots and a coat that's longer than the skirt. The sweater should finish at the skirt's waistband, not over the hem; if it covers the skirt, it looks like you're only wearing a sweater. Pick an A-line or wrap shape over a tight tube, which rides up as you walk. On chilly days a thin thermal under the knit adds warmth without bulk. Go all black for a sleek look, or bring in camel, gray or berry through the sweater and coat. A long tailored coat is what makes it look grown-up.
8. Floral Maxi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Floral maxi skirts carry over from summer if the background is dark: black, navy, burgundy or forest green. Over a pale background, florals look stuck in July. A fitted black top grounds the print and a cropped leather jacket gives it some edge. Proportion is the thing I watch: a full skirt needs a close top and a short jacket, otherwise you lose your shape entirely. Ankle boots with a sturdy heel replace sandals. Pick a bag that repeats one color from the print. On colder days, thin tights underneath; if the skirt is lightweight, a slip stops it clinging to them.
9. Corduroy Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Corduroy skirts are casual, warm and hard to get wrong. Rust, olive or tan with a fitted striped knit gives you texture and pattern without clashing. A button-front A-line is the most wearable cut, and knee length works both with bare legs on mild days and tights later. Loafers with ribbed socks for a preppy finish; ankle boots once it turns cold. A cropped utility jacket keeps the skirt's shape on show. One thing to know about cord: wide wales add bulk across the hips, so I'd pick a fine or medium wale if that's a concern, and wash it inside out to protect the pile.
10. Knit Midi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

A knit skirt with a matching sweater feels like loungewear and looks like a set, which is why I love it for comfort-first days. Oatmeal, taupe, charcoal or chocolate, in matching or near-matching shades for one long line. The quality of the knit decides everything. Thin knits cling to the hips and stretch out at the seat after a few hours of sitting; a dense, heavier knit holds its shape and smooths over the body. Suede ankle boots with a stable heel and a structured bag stop it looking too casual. A partial tuck or narrow belt if you want a waist.
11. Leopard Midi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

I treat leopard as a neutral, as long as nothing else in the outfit has a pattern. A leopard midi, a fitted black turtleneck and black knee-high boots, with a short trench or cropped wool jacket to define the top half. A plain black or brown bag, never a second print. Gold earrings pick up the warm tones of the print. If bold pattern isn't usually your thing, a smaller spot or a darker background is the gentle way in. A fluid fabric moves well; a stiffer one holds a flared shape. Lunch, the office and evenings out all suit it.
12. Asymmetric Skirt Outfit for Autumn

An asymmetric hem is the detail of the outfit, so the top needs to stay out of its way. A fitted cardigan worn as a top lets the diagonal hem or wrap front show. Solid colors like charcoal, navy or dark olive make an unusual cut easier to wear. Pointed slingbacks in early autumn, heeled ankle boots later. Watch the shortest point of the hem: if it lands mid-thigh on a walk in the wind, the skirt shows more than you meant to, so I always check it moving, not just in the mirror. A clean blazer for work, a cropped jacket for weekends.
13. Brocade Skirt Outfit for Autumn

Brocade is woven with a raised pattern, often with metallic threads, so it's dressier and stiffer than most skirts. Choose knee or midi length with muted florals or a woven motif, and pair it with a plain cashmere or fine-knit sweater in one color pulled from the pattern. Loafers keep it daytime; low block-heel pumps take it to an evening event. That stiffness means brocade holds a flared shape well, but it doesn't drape, so a defined waistband and a gentle flare suit it better than a straight cut. Metallic threads can scratch, so a lined skirt is kinder over tights. A plain tailored coat on top.
14. White Maxi Skirt Outfit for Autumn

White maxi skirts work in autumn when the fabric is heavy enough. Twill, denim, wool blend or lined cotton, never thin summer gauze that shows your tights. A chocolate fitted knit and cropped suede jacket against cream or winter white is a warm, fresh combination. Brown leather boots ground it. I'd hem it so it clears the ground with your boots on, because a white hem picks up dirt from wet pavement within a block. A dark brown belt ties the top, jacket and boots together. Ivory or ecru is softer if bright white looks stark on you.
15. Skirt Suit Outfit for Autumn

A skirt suit is two pieces that give you three outfits: the full suit, the blazer with jeans, and the skirt with a sweater. Knee-length skirt and matching blazer in gray, navy, brown or a quiet check. A thin turtleneck under the jacket instead of a blouse adds warmth and feels less formal. I check that the skirt lining is a breathable fabric and that the blazer buttons comfortably over the knit. Loafers for daytime, pointed ankle boots for cold weather, opaque tights as needed. Wear the blazer open to lengthen, or belt it for a waist.
Why Skirts Cling and Ride Up Once It Turns Cold
Dry indoor heating and a layer of tights change how skirts behave. The two complaints I hear most are static and a skirt that creeps up as you walk. Both have simple fixes.
Static cling
Synthetic tights rubbing against a polyester or satin skirt build up static, especially in heated rooms. A lightweight slip between the two helps a lot. So does a little anti-static spray on the inside of the skirt, or a light layer of unscented lotion on your legs before you put on tights. Natural-fiber linings like cotton or viscose cling less than polyester ones.
Riding up
Tights have grip, so an unlined skirt can climb with every step. A lined skirt slides over them instead. If yours isn't lined, a half slip does the same job. Pencil and tube shapes are the worst offenders; A-line and pleated cuts swing free and stay put.
Pilling where the bag sits
Wool and knit skirts pill where a crossbody bag or seatbelt rubs. A fabric shaver removes it, but carrying the bag on the other side now and then spreads the wear out.
Get the Hem Right and the Rest Follows
Every skirt here, from satin and suede to denim, leather, corduroy and knit, comes back to the same handful of autumn basics: a good sweater, a fitted top, a tailored coat, tights and boots. Treat the outfits as formulas, not rules. Change the colors, move the hem up or down, swap the heel height to suit your body and your week. Get the hem and the boot right first, and most of the rest takes care of itself.
