Every autumn I do a reset with clients: what comes out of storage, what stays in rotation from summer, and which simple formulas will carry them through to winter. The outfits below are those formulas. Most mix one structured piece with something soft, so tailoring with relaxed denim, knits with fluid skirts, practical outerwear with a dose of color. Layering does a lot of work in early autumn when the weather can't decide, and tonal dressing with mixed textures makes plain pieces look intentional. You don't need a new wardrobe for any of it. Start with what you own, then adjust each outfit for your climate, your shape and your week.

Which Summer Pieces Stay Out for October
A seasonal reset doesn't mean boxing up everything light. Several of the outfits below depend on summer pieces, and keeping them out stretches your wardrobe a long way.
- Slip dresses and satin skirts: they become autumn clothes under a sweater or with a turtleneck beneath.
- Denim jackets: an outer layer in September, a mid-layer under a wool coat by November.
- White and striped tees: the base for trenches, blazers, cardigans and plaid shirts.
- Long-sleeve shirt dresses: add boots and they carry on straight into cooler weeks.
What I do pack away: sandals, linen trousers that wrinkle the moment a coat goes over them, and very sheer tops that need too many layers to wear in the cold. Pale, thin cottons can stay if you love them, but they look best under something with weight.
Once the swap is done, I hang the autumn pieces together by color rather than by type. Seeing the browns, burgundies, olives and grays side by side makes it obvious which outfits below you can already build, and which single piece would open up several more.
1. Autumn Trench Coat Outfit

I start almost every autumn with a beige trench over a white tee and straight blue jeans, because it tells me what still fits and what needs replacing. The jeans should skim rather than cling, so the trench falls cleanly over them. Black or brown loafers and a structured crossbody keep it practical, and a small printed scarf puts color near the face. On colder mornings, swap the tee for a fine sweater. Petite women usually look best in a knee-length trench; taller women can take a longer cut. Wear it open for a long line, or belt it loosely when you want some shape.
2. Autumn Leather Jacket Outfit

Leather over satin works because the jacket is heavy and the skirt barely weighs anything. A black or chocolate jacket over a cream knit, then a burgundy or navy satin midi. Streamlined ankle boots, a compact bag and simple jewelry finish it. A cropped jacket marks the waist; an oversized one gives a looser shape but needs the skirt to move freely below so it doesn't look top-heavy. On mild days, a lace-trim camisole can replace the knit. Add tights once the temperature drops. It's my go-to for dinners and gallery evenings.
3. Autumn Blazer And Jeans Outfit

Blazer and jeans is the outfit I recommend most to people going back to the office part-time. A plaid, charcoal or camel blazer over a crew-neck tee or fine turtleneck, with straight or slightly wide dark jeans. Loafers keep it professional; minimal sneakers relax it. If the blazer is oversized, the top underneath must be fitted, or the outfit loses its outline. A single-button blazer is the easiest way to get a waist without feeling squeezed. Push the sleeves up a little on mild days.
4. Autumn Cardigan And Jeans Outfit

Cardigans stretch out of shape faster than almost any other knit, so how you store this one matters as much as how you wear it. A slightly oversized cardigan in rust or forest green goes over a fitted tank or cotton tee, with high-rise straight jeans and suede ankle boots. Button it and loosely tuck the front for some definition, or leave it open for an easy layered look. A longer cardigan draws a vertical line over the hips. Fold it in a drawer rather than hanging it, or the shoulders will grow little bumps from the hanger.
5. Autumn Sweater And Midi Skirt Outfit

A sweater with a midi skirt keeps you warm and still lets you stride. A relaxed crew-neck knit with a bias-cut satin, pleated or soft wool skirt, in paired shades such as cream and chocolate or navy and olive. Tuck a small section of the sweater at the front. Knee-high boots fill the space under the skirt so no cold leg shows. If you want a clearer waist, a cropped sweater does that better than a tuck. Medium hoops and a structured bag are all the extras it needs.
6. Autumn Sweater Dress Outfit

Weight is the first thing I check on a sweater dress. Lift the hem: if the knit is thin and light, it'll cling to everything underneath, and if it's heavier, it skims. A charcoal or camel midi, knee-high leather boots and a long wool coat make a clean, long silhouette. You can belt it, but I like it unbelted for a relaxed modern line. With a high neck, skip the necklace and wear a cuff bracelet instead. Opaque tights keep you warm on long days.
7. Autumn Denim Jacket Outfit

A denim jacket carries you through the first mild weeks of autumn before coats come out. Layer a medium or dark-wash one over a ribbed long-sleeve top, then pair it with black tailored trousers so it looks considered rather than weekend-only. White leather sneakers or loafers, depending on the day. A slightly cropped jacket suits high-rise trousers. Avoid stacking distressed pieces; clean denim looks more grown-up. As it gets colder, the denim jacket can even go under a roomy wool coat as a mid-layer.
8. Autumn Plaid Shirt Outfit

Brushed cotton plaid is soft enough to wear like a cardigan. A muted rust or forest-green shirt open over a fitted neutral tee, with black straight jeans and lace-up boots or clean sneakers. Button and loosely tuck it for a neater line. Oversized flannel can swamp a small frame, so look for a softer fabric with a shoulder seam that sits near your actual shoulder. When it turns cold, a quilted vest over the shirt adds warmth and keeps your arms free.
9. Autumn Monochrome Brown Outfit

Brown head to toe looks cohesive and easy, and the secret is not matching. Chocolate wide-leg trousers with a fitted mocha turtleneck, a camel wool coat, dark brown loafers and a cognac bag. Different shades make it look dimensional. Then vary the surfaces: smooth leather, soft knit, firm wool. Gold jewelry warms it; silver sharpens it. If brown next to your face drains you, switch the top to cream and keep the rest tonal. It's polished enough for offices and city days.
10. Autumn Burgundy Outfit

Burgundy trousers are a gentler way into color than a bright sweater. Pair them with a soft ivory knit, and either repeat burgundy in a coat for a tonal look or go lighter with camel outerwear. Dark brown loafers or pointed flats finish the lower half. Because burgundy is strong, I keep the shapes simple: straight trousers, a plain crewneck, no extra details. You can flip it with neutral trousers and a burgundy knit. A matching lip color pulls the whole palette together if that's your thing.
11. Autumn Olive Green Outfit

Olive green is the most forgiving color in this list, because it sits well beside brown, cream, camel and rust. Olive cargo or straight pants with a cream fitted sweater and a camel utility jacket or cropped suede jacket. Brown ankle boots and a dark tote keep it earthy. If cargos feel too casual for your day, olive tailored trousers carry the same palette into an office. Keep pockets and hardware minimal for a cleaner line. A cream and rust silk scarf ties the colors together. Every piece adjusts on its own, so the rise, jacket length and leg width can all be chosen for your shape.
12. Autumn Gray Outfit

Gray goes flat when it's one shade, so I stack three: charcoal wide-leg trousers, a light gray knit and a mid-gray wool coat. Black pointed ankle boots ground it and a burgundy bag adds the single accent. If all-gray feels subdued against your skin, put a white shirt under the sweater so the collar and cuffs show. Hem the trousers for the shoes you'll actually wear; gray trousers puddling over a boot look accidental. Silver jewelry suits gray's cool undertone, though gold contrasts nicely too.
13. Autumn Black And Camel Outfit

Black and camel is the formula I give anyone who needs one outfit that works for nearly everything. Black trousers and a fine black knit make a long column; a camel coat frames it. Black loafers or pointed ankle boots and a structured black bag. Black jeans can stand in for trousers. The coat shade matters near the face, from pale beige to deep caramel, so try a few against your skin in daylight. Change only the shoes and bag and you've got a different outfit for a different setting.
14. Autumn Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

Wide-leg jeans need a defined top half, or the whole outfit reads as one big shape. High-rise dark jeans with a fitted ribbed top, then a short layer that stops at the waist: cropped suede jacket, short trench or waist-length cardigan. Pointed ankle boots peeking out under the hem add length. With a looser top, tuck it fully or partly. Petite women do better with a moderate leg width and a hem that skims the floor in the chosen shoe. Wide hems drag on wet pavements, so I keep them just clear of the ground.
15. Autumn Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

Straight-leg jeans sit between slim and wide, which is why they go with almost every jacket shape. A medium or dark wash with a striped long-sleeve shirt, then a navy blazer or beige trench. A slim brown belt separates the layers. Cuff once to show loafers, or leave them long for a cleaner line. When it's colder, switch the striped shirt for a fitted turtleneck and wear socks that match the shoes. It's a formula you can repeat all season without it feeling stale.
16. Autumn Black Jeans Outfit

Black jeans can look harsh in autumn unless the pieces around them are warm and textured. High-rise black jeans with an oatmeal cable knit and a brown suede jacket soften the effect. Black ankle boots continue the leg line; a cognac or burgundy bag adds contrast. Look for clean black denim with little fading, since faded black reads as gray and tired. A relaxed straight cut is comfortable without losing structure. On warm afternoons, drape the jacket over your shoulders or swap to a cardigan.
17. Autumn Corduroy Pants Outfit

Corduroy trousers bring the texture, so the top half should be smooth. Rust or chocolate straight cords with a cream button-down and a fitted knit vest over it, collar and cuffs out. Loafers or simple ankle boots and a structured satchel finish the preppy line. Fine-wale cord looks sleeker and suits office days; wide-wale feels casual and adds some bulk to the leg. If layering a shirt and vest feels like too much, a tucked turtleneck works instead. Wash cords inside out so the ridges keep their pile.
18. Autumn Pleated Skirt Outfit

Pleats add volume at the hip, and that's the first thing I think about with this skirt. Stitched-down pleats that open lower on the body give the movement without the width. Pick forest green, navy or a subtle check and pair it with a fitted turtleneck and a cropped cardigan that ends at the waistband. Knee-high boots keep legs warm under the hem. Matching the top to the skirt color lengthens the whole figure. A tailored wool coat goes over everything on cold days.
19. Autumn Satin Skirt And Knit Outfit

Satin and knit is a contrast that looks styled even when you've thrown it on in two minutes. A bias-cut bronze or chocolate midi with a relaxed cream or light gray sweater, front gently tucked. Knee-high or pointed ankle boots keep the line long. A bulky sweater needs a skirt with a flat waistband and little gathering, or the tuck turns into a lump. For layering under a blazer, choose a finer knit. It photographs well, which is worth knowing if there's a seasonal lunch or celebration on the calendar.
20. Autumn Mini Skirt And Tights Outfit

A mini in autumn only works if you can move in it without tugging. Sit down in the fitting room, bend to pick something up; if the hem rides too high, go longer. An A-line wool, corduroy or checked mini with a fitted turtleneck and a slightly oversized blazer gives balanced coverage. Black opaque tights run straight into black knee-high boots or loafers for an unbroken line. A long wool coat adds warmth without hiding the shape. The same formula works with a skirt just above the knee.
21. Autumn Shirt Dress Outfit

Button-front shirt dresses gape at the bust more than almost any other style, so I size for the bust and have the waist taken in if needed. A long-sleeve midi in denim, olive or a small print, belted with its own tie or a simple leather belt. Knee-high boots and a structured crossbody make it practical. As it gets colder, add a fitted turtleneck underneath or a long coat over. Roll the sleeves on warm afternoons. It's comfortable for long workdays and travel.
22. Autumn Slip Dress And Sweater Outfit

A slip dress is the summer piece I'd keep out longest. Pull a soft crew-neck sweater over it and the dress becomes a midi skirt. Black, bronze or deep green slip with a cream or gray knit, knee-high boots and a clean-lined shoulder bag. A slim belt under the sweater's hem holds the fold in place and marks the waist. Alternatively, wear a fitted turtleneck under the dress and a leather jacket on top. Opaque tights add warmth. Thin slips cling in dry autumn air, so a quick anti-static treatment helps.
23. Autumn Tailored Trousers Outfit

Tailored trousers with a soft top are the comfortable version of office dressing. High-rise straight or wide trousers in charcoal or camel, a fitted cotton tee and a relaxed cardigan. Loafers, a leather belt and a roomy tote complete it. Swap the cardigan for a blazer when you need it more formal. The hem should skim the shoe, not bunch around it. Curvy figures often find a little stretch in the fabric more comfortable at the hip and seat; straighter shapes can use pleats or a belted waist to build definition.
24. Autumn Utility Jacket Outfit

Utility jackets already have pockets, flaps and snaps, so the rest of the outfit should be quiet. An olive or khaki jacket over a striped knit or plain long-sleeve tee, with dark straight jeans and brown leather ankle boots. A crossbody bag and light scarf finish it. Adjustable waist cords give shape if you want it; a boxy cut layers more easily over sweaters. Gold jewelry suits warm olive, silver makes it feel more modern. It's an easy outfit for markets and sightseeing.
25. Autumn Quilted Jacket Outfit

Collarless quilted jackets are light but surprisingly warm, and they sit neatly under a scarf. Olive or chocolate over a soft cream sweater, then straight jeans or slim ankle trousers. Sturdy loafers or flat ankle boots and a leather tote. Size it with a knit on, because quilting doesn't stretch and a jacket that's tight across the back over a sweater will pull at the stitching. A slightly longer back hem gives useful coverage. Keep everything else plain, since the quilting is already the texture.
26. Autumn Puffer Vest Outfit

A puffer vest keeps your core warm when a coat is too much. A streamlined black or olive vest over a fitted long-sleeve knit, with straight jeans or thick opaque leggings. Lace-up boots and warm socks for walking. A baseball cap makes it sporty; a checked scarf makes it traditional. Shorter vests or ones with side tabs give some waist. Keep the sleeves underneath close-fitting, because a bulky sweater under a vest makes the arms look puffy next to a sleek torso.
27. Autumn Oversized Scarf Outfit

An oversized scarf is the cheapest way to change an outfit, as long as it's chosen like a garment rather than grabbed on the way out. Fitted charcoal turtleneck, straight blue jeans and a camel wool coat, then a large checked or color-block scarf wrapped loosely. Pick a scarf with at least one color already in the outfit. Black ankle boots and a structured bag ground the volume at the shoulders. Thick blanket scarves can swallow a petite frame, and a medium weight hanging in long vertical ends is kinder.
28. Autumn Sneakers And Coat Outfit

Sneakers with a long wool coat look polished when the sneakers are clean and slim and the trousers stop at the ankle. Tailored ankle trousers, a fine-knit sweater and minimal leather sneakers in white or gray. A heavy break of fabric on top of a sneaker makes it look like you forgot to change shoes. Match socks to either the trousers or the shoes so there's no sudden stripe of color. Straight jeans make a more casual version. For anyone who dislikes boots, this is the comfortable all-day option.
29. Autumn Loafers And Trousers Outfit

Loafers set the tone for this outfit, so pick them first. Chunky loafers balance wide trousers; slimmer pairs suit straight or tapered cuts. Then come pleated ankle trousers, a crisp button-down and a crew-neck sweater over it with collar and cuffs out. A trench or structured wool jacket goes on when it's cold. Thin socks in a matching shade make the gap between trouser and shoe look deliberate. If a full shirt bunches under the sweater, choose a light poplin. It's smart for work and comfortable for walking.
30. Autumn Weekend Leggings Outfit

Leggings make a full outfit when the fabric is substantial and the layers cover enough. High-rise matte black leggings with a long white or striped button-down, then an oversized crew-neck sweater on top so the shirt hem and cuffs show. Riding boots, lace-up boots or clean sneakers. A structured crossbody and a long wool coat make it look intentional. Check the waistband: a secure, wide one stays put through a day of errands. If big layers feel shapeless, a sweater with side slits or a shorter jacket helps.
Waking Up Last Year's Knits, Coats and Boots
The pieces that come out of storage need a little attention before the first cold morning. Ten minutes per item now saves a ruined sweater in November.
Knitwear
Unfold every wool sweater and hold it up to a window. Small holes, usually near the cuffs and neckline, are often moth damage, and if you find one, wash or freeze the rest of that drawer before it spreads. Shake knits out and let them air for a day. Take pilling off with a fabric comb rather than scissors, which can snag the yarn.
Coats and leather
Wool coats belong on wide, shaped hangers so the shoulders don't dent. Brush them with a clothes brush to lift dust from the nap. Leather jackets and boots dry out over summer, and a thin coat of leather conditioner brings back the suppleness. Suede needs a fresh layer of protector spray, applied outside and left to dry fully, before it meets the first rain. Check boot heels and soles for wear now; a cobbler can replace a worn heel tip much more easily than a split sole.
Start the Season With Five Formulas, Not Thirty
A good autumn wardrobe is mostly comfort and warmth, with a bit of personality on top. You won't wear all of these outfits, and you don't need to. Pick the five formulas that match your weeks, build them from jeans, tailored trousers, knits, midi skirts, boots, loafers and one or two coats you already own, and add color and texture from there. Adjust hems, proportions and fabrics to your body and climate. If you can move freely and still feel put together by mid-afternoon, the outfit is working.
