Thirty Characters Sorted by How Much Building They Need
Before falling for a character, be honest about the weeks and skills you have. I sort the list below into three rough groups when people ask where to start.
Mostly from your wardrobe
Makima, Power, Wednesday, Lara Croft, Hermione, Marin, Black Widow and Catwoman are built from shirts, trousers, skirts and boots you can buy or already own. The wig does the heavy lifting, so that's where the money goes.
Some sewing or a little foam
Sailor Moon, Nezuko, Mitsuri, Nobara, Mikasa, Tifa, Aerith, Harley Quinn, Spider-Gwen, Yor and the Barbie cowgirl need trim added, a haori or harness made, or a few foam pieces cut. A weekend or two is usually enough.
A proper project
Princess Peach, both Zelda looks, Frieren, Daenerys, Asuka, D.Va, Miku, Jinx, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Woman and Chun-Li ask for gowns, fitted panels, styled long wigs or shaped foam. Give these at least a month, and do a full wear test before the event.
1. Sailor Moon Cosplay With Blue Skirt

Sailor Moon is the look I'd hand to anyone who wants colour and a shape people know at a glance. Begin with a white fitted top or stretch bodysuit with a blue sailor collar and red chest bow, then a pleated blue skirt, elbow-length white gloves and a red back bow at the waist. The blonde wig needs two high buns with long pigtails, and I anchor each bun with its own row of bobby pins through the wig cap, because the weight of those tails drags them sideways by lunchtime. Rosy blush, defined lashes and a pink lip, plus a gold tiara, red hair ornaments and a light moon wand. Red knee-highs or flat boot covers finish it, and thermal tights under the skirt help on a cold day.
2. Nezuko Kamado Cosplay With Pink Kimono

Nezuko Kamado is comfortable as long as the layers are right. Wear a pink geometric-print kimono over a dark brown underlayer, wrap the waist with a red-and-white obi and a wide orange cord, and add dark leg wraps, white tabi-style socks and flat sandals. Her long black wig has orange-tinted ends, with a small pink ribbon pulling one side back. Peach blush, soft brows and a gentle pink eye suit her. I keep the bamboo piece off the mouth entirely and clip it below the chin for photos, so you can eat, drink and talk. A kimono at full length catches on escalators, so shortening it to the ankle is worth the small loss of accuracy.
3. Mitsuri Kanroji Cosplay With Pink And Green Wig

Mitsuri Kanroji's pink, green and white palette is impossible to miss. Build around a dark button-front uniform jacket and pleated skirt, adjusting the neckline and length to the coverage you want, and layer a white haori over the top to lift the dark base. Her long pink wig fading into lime green, set in three thick braids, does most of the work; braid it the night before so the plaits settle flat. Green eye makeup, pink blush and a glossy rose lip match her, with pink-and-green striped socks and white sandals or low platforms. A butterfly clip or small pouch replaces any weapon. Hidden shorts under the skirt and a couple of wig grips keep everything where it should be.
4. Yor Forger Cosplay With Black Dress

Yor Forger's evening look is the one I steer people toward when they want polish rather than armour. Choose a sleeveless black midi dress with a fitted waist, wide straps and fine gold trim at the neckline, with sheer black tights and black knee-high boots on a stable heel. Her long black wig has straight bangs and two side sections, and the gold rose headband sits over the crown with simple gold drops at the ears. Make that headband fit snugly against the wig; a loose one slides forward every time you look down. Red-toned shadow, precise liner, soft contour and a muted red lip set her face. Red fabric roses make a safe prop, and a cropped black cardigan adds cover.
5. Makima Cosplay With White Shirt And Tie

Makima is one of the best closet cosplays going, because the outfit is plain workwear and the hair carries the character. Tuck a crisp white button-down into tailored black trousers, add a slim black tie and a simple belt. The copper-red wig wants blunt bangs and a loose braid. Keep makeup controlled: warm neutral shadow, fine black liner, peach blush and a soft coral lip. Skip coloured contacts; golden-brown shadow suggests her eyes without the discomfort. Black loafers, low pumps or lace-up ankle boots all work, and a black folder or ID badge is enough prop. I'd iron the shirt with a little spray starch so it stays sharp through the photos.
6. Power Cosplay With Blue Jacket And Horns

Power mixes casual clothes with one bold fantasy detail. Wear a white button-down with a loose black tie under an oversized blue or navy jacket, with straight black trousers or knee-length tailored shorts. Her long strawberry-blonde wig has bangs, and the red horns attach to a hidden headband underneath the hair. Foam horns are lighter and safer than hard plastic, and a horn that's too heavy will tip the whole wig backwards. Warm red liner, defined brows and a playful peach lip suit her expression. A black belt and a small red crossbody bag are plenty, with white sneakers or black lace-ups for walking. A strip of fashion tape keeps the tie from wandering.
7. Nobara Kugisaki Cosplay With Navy Uniform

Nobara Kugisaki's school uniform looks sharp and moves easily. Choose a dark navy button-front jacket with a standing collar and a matching knee-length skirt, with black tights running down into brown ankle boots or low lace-ups. Her short auburn wig takes a side part and very little styling. Warm brown shadow, strong brows, a small wing and a natural rose lip fit her. Leave the hammer and nails at home; a small straw doll or an orange cosmetic pouch keeps her personality without bothering security. A standing collar only looks right if it actually stands, so I add a strip of firm interfacing inside it. Hidden pockets in the skirt are worth sewing in.
8. Mikasa Ackerman Cosplay With Brown Jacket

Mikasa Ackerman's uniform gives you military tailoring without any armour. Start with a white button-down and fitted white or cream trousers, add a cropped brown jacket with removable patches, a tan waist wrap and dark harness straps. The harness is where most versions go wrong: buckled tight, it digs in every time you sit, so I set the straps with a little slack and use elastic sections at the back. Her short black wig has softly angled ends, and the deep red scarf is the detail people look for. Natural matte makeup and a muted berry lip suit her, with brown knee-high boots. A canvas map case is a safer carry than blades.
9. Asuka Langley Cosplay With Red Suit

Asuka Langley relies on colour blocking rather than accessories. Choose a red long-sleeve jumpsuit or fitted athletic set and add white, black and green panels in stretch fabric or removable vinyl. If a close fit isn't for you, a red zip-front jacket with tapered pants still reads as Asuka. Her long copper-orange wig has face-framing bangs and two red clips near the temples. Peach blush, brown liner and a coral lip keep the face bright, with white ankle boots or sleek high-tops. Adhesive panels tend to lift at the elbows and knees first, so I'd stitch those few around the edge even if you glue the rest. A light headset finishes her.
10. Hatsune Miku Cosplay With Teal Pigtails

Hatsune Miku is all about those extra-long teal pigtails. Her outfit is a sleeveless grey top with teal trim, a pleated black skirt at mini or knee length, and detached black arm sleeves, with black tights or bike shorts beneath. Clip the pigtails onto a short base wig and reinforce each clip with a few stitches, since the weight of long synthetic tails pulls standard clips loose. A silicone spray made for synthetic fibre keeps the ends from matting. Cool grey shadow, teal liner, pink blush and a glossy lip suit her, with black knee-high boots trimmed in teal, a headset mic and small hair clips. For a closet version, a grey vest, pleated skirt and teal tie work.
11. Marin Kitagawa Cosplay With School Uniform

Marin Kitagawa's school uniform is easy to assemble from separates. Begin with a white button-down, a blue plaid pleated skirt, a navy striped tie and a slim dark choker. Her long golden-blonde wig has pink-tinted ends and a side part, with a couple of hidden clips at the front so it doesn't shift. Lively makeup with peach shadow, black winged liner, pink blush and a glossy nude-pink lip fits her, plus small hoops and stacked bracelets. Black knee-high socks and brown loafers or cushioned platforms finish the look. A small sewing kit bag suits a character who sews her own costumes, and it's genuinely handy for repairs. A light cardigan helps in chilly halls.
12. Frieren Cosplay With White Cape

Frieren is calm and flowing, with plenty of coverage. Wear a white tunic dress with gold trim over black leggings or opaque tights, add a short white cape with a structured collar, and cinch the waist with a black belt. Her long silver-white wig goes into two low pigtails, with soft pointed ear covers tucked beneath the hair. Keep the makeup delicate with cool taupe shadow, a light liner, pale pink blush and a muted rose lip, and don't forget the red teardrop earrings. Dark brown ankle or flat knee boots finish her. White fabrics and silver wigs both pick up grime fast, so I'd keep a lint roller and a small comb in the bag. A blank-paged spellbook is the prop.
13. Princess Zelda Cosplay With Blue Dress

Princess Zelda's blue travelling outfit is the practical version of her. Start with a long-sleeve blue tunic trimmed in white and gold over fitted black leggings or slim trousers, then add a brown belt, fingerless gloves and a cream shoulder sash with geometric fabric paint. Paint that pattern with the sash stretched flat over cardboard, so the lines stay crisp and the paint can't bleed through. A long golden-blonde wig in a loose side braid with small bands, champagne shadow, soft brown liner, peach blush and a natural lip finish her. Ear tips are optional and should sit comfortably under the wig. Brown knee-high boots, a blue pouch and a light foam tablet are plenty.
14. Princess Peach Cosplay With Pink Gown

Princess Peach is pure storybook glamour in a pink gown with blue sparkle. Look for a floor-length dress with puff sleeves, a fitted bodice and layered skirts in two pinks. A hoop-free petticoat gives enough volume while still fitting through doorways and crowded halls. Her long golden-blonde wig has curled ends and side-swept bangs, with a light gold crown set with blue and red gems, round blue earrings and a matching pendant. Rosy blush, fluttery lashes, pale pink shadow and a glossy berry lip suit her. I sew a small loop inside the hem that slips over the wrist, so you can lift the skirt on stairs without grabbing a handful of fabric. Pink flats and a star purse finish her.
15. Lara Croft Cosplay With Green Tank Top

Lara Croft's explorer outfit is sturdy clothing you'll wear again. An olive tank or fitted tee goes with brown cargo shorts or utility pants, a wide belt, fingerless gloves and thigh straps cut from elastic webbing rather than stiff costume pieces. Elastic matters here; rigid straps slide down your legs every few steps. Pull a long brown wig or your own hair into a practical braid with a few loose strands. Matte neutral makeup, defined brows, light contour and a warm nude lip suit her. Brown hiking boots look right and support you all day. Carry a small backpack, compass, rolled map and flashlight, and choose knee-length shorts if you'd like more coverage.
16. Tifa Lockhart Cosplay With White Top

Tifa Lockhart works as a sporty, comfortable black-and-white look. Start with a fitted white tank or cropped tee over a black sports camisole, then a black pleated skort, opaque tights or stretch shorts. Black arm sleeves, red fingerless gloves and adjustable suspenders add her colour accents. Her very long black wig tangles quickly at the ends, so I tie it loosely near the bottom the way she does, which is both accurate and practical. Brown liner, soft contour, pink blush and a rose lip keep the face clean. Red lace-up boots or red high-tops finish her, and moisture-wicking pieces earn their place in a warm, packed hall. Leave combat props at home.
17. Aerith Gainsborough Cosplay With Pink Dress

Aerith Gainsborough is soft and romantic, with boots that keep it practical. Choose a calf-length pink button-front dress with a gently flared skirt and layer a cropped red jacket over it, adding simple bracelets and a ribbon choker if you like. Her long chestnut wig goes into a thick braid tied at the top with a big pink bow; tie it before you put the wig on, while you can see what you're doing. Fresh makeup with rosy cheeks, brown mascara, soft pink shadow and a satin rose lip suits her. Brown lace-up boots are far easier than dainty shoes. A small basket of fabric flowers is her prop, and a pocket in the dress holds your phone.
18. Chun-Li Cosplay With Blue Dress

Chun-Li's blue-and-gold outfit adapts well to different coverage levels. Wear a royal blue high-neck dress or long tunic with gold piping, side panels and puffed white sleeves, over opaque brown tights, fitted shorts or blue leggings. Style dark hair into two high buns under white ribbon covers. Defined winged liner, pink blush and a classic red lip give her a stage-ready face. I make the spiked bracelets from soft foam with rounded tips, so they're light and can't scratch anyone. White lace-ups or sneakers with boot covers finish the outfit. Stretch side panels let you sit, and built-in shorts keep the dress from riding up when you pose.
19. D.Va Cosplay With Blue And Pink Jumpsuit

D.Va's blue, pink and white graphics make a fun gaming uniform. Choose a blue long-sleeve jumpsuit or matching top and leggings, then add pink and white panels in stretch vinyl or fabric appliqué. This version uses a short brown wig with curled ends, which is easier to manage than her long hair. Paint the small pink triangles on the cheeks in skin-safe cream colour and set them with powder, then black liner, rosy blush and a glossy pink lip. White high-tops or low boots with blue laces carry you all day, with a pink headset and a light controller as props. Keep thick decorations off the knees and elbows, where they crack and peel first.
20. Jinx Cosplay With Blue Braids

Jinx gives you electric blue hair and mismatched streetwear with no armour required. Wear a black fitted top with magenta straps over striped purple leggings, with distressed black shorts on top, a cropped belt, fingerless gloves and light arm wraps. Her bright blue wig goes into two extremely long braids; I'd shorten them to around the knee and loop the ends through your belt while walking, or someone will step on them. Pink shadow, sharp liner, cool contour and a muted berry lip suit her. Draw the arm markings with skin-safe body paint, never permanent ink. Cushioned combat boots finish her, and a messenger bag or small foam gadget replaces weapons.
21. Wednesday Addams Cosplay With Black Dress

Wednesday Addams is simple, comfortable and still one of the most readable looks here. Choose a black knee-length dress with long sleeves, a white pointed collar and white cuffs, ideally with a soft pleat in the skirt. A long black wig goes into two smooth braids with a dead-straight centre part; I draw the part line with a tail comb and a little gel. Use a pale matte foundation within your natural range, cool grey shadow, defined brows and a deep berry lip rather than white face paint. Black tights and chunky loafers or ankle boots finish her. A black notebook or cello-shaped purse is a fun prop, and a fitted black cardigan solves cold venues.
22. Harley Quinn Cosplay With Red And Blue Jacket

Harley Quinn can be playful and colourful and still comfortable. Build around a red-and-blue satin bomber over a white printed tee, with red and blue shorts over opaque tights or split-colour joggers for more coverage. Style a blonde wig into high pigtails and colour the ends pink and blue with temporary wig spray; spray outdoors and let it dry fully, or it transfers onto the jacket. Smudged pink-and-blue shadow, winged liner, a small heart on the cheek and a bright red lip finish her. Red-and-white high-tops or sturdy ankle boots, stacked bracelets and a baseball-shaped purse beat a giant mallet. A zip jacket and stretch waist make sitting easy.
23. Scarlet Witch Cosplay With Red Coat

Scarlet Witch looks mysterious without a restrictive bodysuit. Start with a burgundy long-sleeve top and black fitted pants under a flowing crimson coat or sleeveless duster. Her crown cuts well from lightweight foam, heat-shaped to the head and held with an elastic band; build it slightly loose so it can sit on a wig without pressing a line into your forehead. A long auburn wig in loose waves with a centre part, burgundy and brown shadow, defined lashes, warm contour and a deep rose lip complete her face. Black knee-high boots beat narrow heels. Red sheer ribbon streamers make a safe magic effect, and magnetic closures let the coat come off fast in a warm hall.
24. Wonder Woman Cosplay With Red And Blue Armor

Wonder Woman's colours translate into a light costume without heavy armour. Wear a red fitted top with a gold eagle appliqué and a blue pleated skirt or shorts with white stars, then add a wide gold foam belt, matching cuffs and a soft gold tiara with a red centre. Her long dark brown wig wants loose, polished waves. Bronze shadow, defined brows, warm blush and a classic red lip suit her. Red knee-high boots or sneakers with removable boot covers make walking easier. A coiled gold rope from soft cord is her harmless prop. Foam scuffs at the edges by evening; I pack a small bottle of the same gold paint and a cotton bud for quick touch-ups.
25. Spider-Gwen Cosplay With White Hood

Spider-Gwen suits an athletic, easy build. Choose a white hooded zip jacket over a black long-sleeve top and leggings, and add pink-and-teal web fabric inside the hood and along the forearms with stretch panels or removable cuffs. A short blonde asymmetrical bob shows when the hood is down. I'd keep the face uncovered and lean on sharp black liner, cool pink shadow and a soft nude lip, which also means you can eat and talk freely. White high-tops with teal or pink soles finish her. Light web bracelets or a spider-print crossbody add detail. Tuck a fabric mask in the bag for photos, and check the venue allows full-face coverings first.
26. Black Widow Cosplay With Black Utility Suit

Black Widow's uniform turns into a practical convention outfit when you build it from separates. Wear a fitted black zip-front jacket with black cargo pants or durable leggings instead of one tight suit, which also makes bathroom breaks far simpler. Add a red hourglass belt detail, soft wrist cuffs and slim pouches that actually hold your things. A shoulder-length red wig in loose curls or a longer auburn version from a different film both work. Smoky brown shadow, black liner, peach blush and a muted red lip keep her polished. Black combat boots with cushioned insoles finish her, with a document case as a prop. Reflective piping defines the black against a dark hall.
27. Catwoman Cosplay With Black Jumpsuit

Catwoman can look sleek without being revealing. Pick a long-sleeve black jumpsuit, a zip-front coverall or a fitted mock-neck with faux-leather pants, then add a wide belt and light gloves with short, rounded foam claws. A soft cat-ear headband is much easier to wear all day than a full-head mask. A short black wig frames the face, or pull your own hair into a low ponytail. Smoky charcoal eyes, sharp liner, sculpted brows and a deep plum lip suit her. Low-heeled knee boots keep the strong outline. Stretch panels and an adjustable zip let the costume fit different bodies, and a cat-shaped handbag is a playful finish.
28. Daenerys Targaryen Cosplay With Blue Gown

Daenerys Targaryen's pale blue gown is flowing and elegant, and the braids are the signature. Choose a soft blue maxi dress with a V-wrap bodice, structured shoulders and a split overskirt over an opaque underskirt. A silver belt or chain sits at the waist; keep it light, because metal chain gets heavy on the hips over a long day. Her long platinum wig takes small braids from each temple joined at the crown, which I'd do on a wig head the evening before. Cool taupe shadow, luminous foundation, peach blush and a neutral pink lip suit her. Grey ankle boots or flat sandals hide under the hem, and a dragon-egg clutch in painted foam scales is a great prop.
29. Hermione Granger Cosplay With School Robe

Hermione Granger's school uniform is a reliable closet cosplay. Start with a white button-down, a grey V-neck sweater, a pleated charcoal skirt and a red-and-gold striped tie, then layer a long black robe over the top with a sewn or iron-on school patch. A shoulder-length brown wig with loose, slightly frizzy waves gets her early-years look, so don't over-brush it. Keep makeup natural: soft brows, brown mascara, pink blush and a tinted balm. Grey knee socks and black loafers or lace-ups finish her. Carry a stack of old hardbacks, a feather pen and a satchel instead of a wand. The robe is warm, so drop the sweater on a hot day.
30. Barbie Cowgirl Cosplay With Pink Flared Pants

Barbie's cowgirl look is all bold pink and sparkle. Wear a sleeveless pink vest over a fitted white top with high-waisted pink flares decorated in silver stars, then a white cowboy hat, pink bandana and a glittery belt with a light oversized buckle. A long blonde wig in smooth waves or a high ponytail suits her, with shimmery pink shadow, defined lashes, rosy cheeks and a glossy bubblegum lip. White ankle or western boots finish the look, and a star-shaped pink purse is the prop. Glue rhinestones on with fabric glue and keep them off the seat and back of the thighs; nothing ruins an all-day costume like sitting on gems.
Living With a Very Long Wig for a Day
Miku, Jinx, Tifa, Frieren, Daenerys and Mitsuri all wear wigs that reach the waist or beyond, and those are the ones that cause trouble. Long synthetic fibre tangles wherever it rubs, which is usually the nape, the shoulder of a bag strap and the back of a chair.
- Brush from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, never from the root down.
- Mist lightly with a silicone spray made for synthetic fibre before the event and again around midday.
- Braid or tie off the bottom third if the character allows it; loose ends mat fastest.
- Wear a crossbody bag on the front of your body, so the strap doesn't saw through the hair at the back.
- Keep heat tools off unless the label says heat-resistant; high heat melts synthetic fibre.
Afterwards, wash the wig in cool water with a mild shampoo, let it dry on a stand away from direct heat, then store it loosely in a hair net inside a box. Folded tightly in a bag, it comes out next year creased and frizzy.
Start From the One Detail Everyone Knows
The characters above cover anime, gaming, fantasy, superheroes and film, and each one bends to your budget, weather, mobility, body and coverage. I always start from the strongest visual detail, whether that's a colour pairing, a hairstyle, a uniform or one accessory, and simplify everything else around it. Comfortable shoes, breathable layers, a secure wig and light props make the day enjoyable. Check the venue's rules on masks and large props before you go. Then pick the character that makes you stand a little taller; good posture and a well-fitted costume beat expensive materials every time.
