A first cosplay doesn't need to be complicated to land. In my experience styling character costumes, people recognise a character from a handful of cues: the colour palette, the hair shape, and one or two signature pieces. Get those right, add shoes you can stand in all day, and the rest can be simple. The characters below range from easy closet builds to proper sewing projects, with fantasy heroes, anime uniforms, superhero suits and a few good duo and family pairings mixed in. Each one covers clothes, wig, makeup, props and footwear, so you can match a look to your budget, your skill and the fandom you actually love.

Breaking a Character Into Buy, Thrift and Make
The step most first-timers skip is sorting the costume before spending anything. I pull up two or three clear reference pictures of the character from the front and back, then list every visible piece and put it into one of three columns.
- Buy: the wig, almost always. A wig cut to the right shape does more for recognition than any garment, and styling one from scratch is a skill of its own. Shoes and tights also belong here.
- Thrift or own: shirts, trousers, plain dresses, blazers and boots. Loid, Makima, Denji and Power are almost entirely this column.
- Make: the one or two signature details nobody sells well, like Anya's hair pieces, Power's horns, Denji's starter cord or Tanjiro's checked haori.
If the make column has more than three items, it's a second costume, not a first. Pick a character where most of the list is buy and thrift, and put your effort into the details that read from across the room.
1. Wednesday Addams Cosplay Costume

Wednesday is about as easy as a strong character gets. A black midi dress with a crisp white collar and cuffs, opaque black tights and chunky loafers or low platforms make the whole outfit. The braids carry the recognition, so I'd spend the effort there: a long black wig, a dead-straight centre part, and two smooth plaits tied off with thin black elastic. Pale, matte makeup with soft brows, gray shadow and a muted berry lip finishes the face. A small black backpack or an old-looking book is plenty to carry. If you'd like a modern version, add a fitted black jacket. The posture does the rest: still, upright, unsmiling.
2. Barbie Cowgirl Cosplay Costume

Bright pink makes this cowgirl look cheerful from across the room. Build it around a sleeveless pink flared jumpsuit, or a matching vest with bell-bottoms, covered in silver stars, with a white long-sleeve top underneath if you want more coverage. Add a white cowboy hat, a pink bandana, heart earrings and a wide decorative belt. The stars are the fiddly part. Iron-on stars tend to peel from stretch fabric, so I'd stitch or use a flexible fabric glue on anything that bends. A long wavy blonde wig, fluttery lashes and glossy pink lips finish it. Pick white western boots with a stable heel over costume stilettos, and a small pink shoulder bag for your phone.
3. Spider-Gwen Cosplay Costume

Spider-Gwen pairs athletic comfort with a sharp comic silhouette. Look for a fitted white-and-black bodysuit with pink and blue web accents inside the hood and sleeves, in a breathable stretch fabric with a hidden zip you can reach yourself. That zip matters more than any detail on the suit, because a bodysuit you can't get out of alone makes for a long day. White dance sneakers or flexible boots continue the clean lines. A short blonde wig with an undercut effect gives Gwen's hair when the hood is down. Keep the makeup fresh with pink blush. If you'd rather not cover your face, clip the fabric mask to your belt. Crouch and stand at home first to test every seam.
4. Sailor Moon Cosplay Costume

Sailor Moon suits solo and group outings alike, and the whole team gives you an easy group costume. Begin with a white sailor-style bodysuit or dress with a blue collar, a pleated blue skirt and red bows at the chest and back. Add elbow-length white gloves with red trim and red knee-high boots with supportive insoles. The wig is the centrepiece: long golden-blonde with two buns and flowing pigtails. Those buns are heavy, so I build them over foam bun forms and pin them to a wig cap rather than trusting the wig's own elastic. A gold tiara, crescent earrings and a neat winged liner finish the face. Carry a foam moon wand where prop rules allow, and wear shorts under the skirt.
5. Tanjiro Kamado Cosplay Costume

Tanjiro is a comfortable layered build, and the haori does most of the work. Wear a dark buttoned uniform with loose trousers, white leg wraps, and flat sandals over dark socks, then layer the green-and-black checked haori on top. If you're sewing that haori, the checks have to line up at the seams; cut each panel in a single layer so you can match the squares. A short burgundy wig with textured spikes, or temporary colour in your own hair, gives the hair. Draw the forehead mark with skin-safe cosmetics, never craft paint. Hanafuda-style earrings are the small detail fans look for. A lightweight box-style backpack can hold your things and adds to the silhouette.
6. Nezuko Kamado Cosplay Costume

Nezuko is detailed without any armour. Start with a pink kimono-style dress in a geometric print, wrap it with a red-and-white obi, and add a dark brown haori, pale leg wraps and flat sandals over pink socks. A long black wig that fades into orange at the ends gives her the signature colour, with a small pink ribbon on one side. Pink eye makeup and soft blush suit her. The bamboo mouthpiece is where comfort matters: I'd make it from lightweight green foam on a soft ribbon and take it off between photos, since you can't talk, eat or drink with it in. Keep the robe hem off the floor. She makes an easy sibling pairing with Tanjiro.
7. Gojo Satoru Cosplay Costume

Gojo shows how far a sleek, simple outfit can go. A high-collar black jacket, slim matching trousers and light black boots or sneakers make the whole base, and the jacket should fit cleanly without pulling across the shoulders. The white wig is where the work is. Style it upward with a flexible wax, separating the spikes so they look soft rather than glued, and keep a comb in your bag for touch-ups. Wear a black fabric blindfold or round dark glasses, or bring both and swap. A cool-toned foundation and lightly shaded brows stop your face disappearing under that pale hair. Coloured lenses are optional, and only ever with a proper fitting.
8. Anya Forger Cosplay Costume

Anya is a sweet beginner costume and a strong choice for younger fans. A simple black A-line dress with gold trim at the cuffs and hem, white tights and black Mary Janes make the outfit. The short pink bob wig should curve toward the face with tidy bangs. Her hair ornaments are what people spot first, so I cut them from lightweight foam, paint them black and gold, and glue them to snap clips that grip the wig. Soft pink blush and a natural lip are enough makeup. A small school satchel or plush toy is the prop. It's modest and comfortable, which suits family groups and long days; add a black cardigan for a cold hall.
9. Yor Forger Cosplay Costume

Yor's black evening dress gives an elegant look that's still friendly to wear. Choose a fitted black sleeveless dress with a high neck, gold detailing and a flared or asymmetric skirt, with sheer black tights. Ankle-strap heels keep the formal line, though I'd switch to low block heels for a long day on your feet. A long black wig with straight bangs and a neat half-up section takes the gold rose headband. Red shadow, fine liner and a muted red lip finish her face. Gold drop earrings and a slim clutch add the small details. Rather than combat props, pose with red roses or a gold fan. The look reads clearly and fits any venue rule.
10. Loid Forger Cosplay Costume

Loid is the costume to try if you already own formal clothes. A fitted green three-piece suit, or a green blazer with matching trousers and a vest, goes over a white shirt with a red tie, black gloves and brown lace-ups. Suit colour is the thing to watch: a gray-green reads correctly, while a bright green looks like a different character entirely. A short blonde wig with a clean side part and one swept-forward section gives his hair. Keep makeup understated with groomed brows and light contour. A slim briefcase or a folded newspaper is the prop. Make sure you can sit in the trousers. He pairs naturally with Yor, or with Anya for a family set, yet still reads alone.
11. Power Cosplay Costume

Power's chaotic personality comes through in a simple office outfit. Wear a slightly oversized white button-down with a black tie, dark trousers and black sneakers or low loafers, sleeves rolled loosely and the shirt half tucked. The long strawberry-blonde wig needs uneven bangs and two small red horns near the crown. I make the horns from foam clay on a flat base and stitch the base into the wig through a few wefts, which holds far better than glue. Gold eye shadow and bold liner can stand in for golden lenses. Pointed cosmetic teeth are fine for short photos only. A cropped navy jacket adds warmth, and attitude does the rest.
12. Makima Cosplay Costume

Makima relies on clean businesswear and very precise grooming. Pair a white button-down with black tailored trousers, a narrow black tie and polished shoes, with a fitted black blazer for cooler venues that can come off for the classic shirt-and-tie look. The long copper-red wig needs straight bangs and a loose braid down the back. A long wig braid frizzes quickly against clothing, so I braid it loosely, mist it with a little wig conditioner and tie it with clear elastic. Warm gold and red eye makeup creates her gaze without uncomfortable novelty lenses, with a neutral rose lip. A slim folder holds your essentials. Calm posture finishes the character.
13. Denji Cosplay Costume

Denji is the cheapest look on the list, since it's built from basics. Wear a slightly wrinkled white shirt, loose black tie, dark trousers and worn black sneakers, with the sleeves rolled and the collar open. A short, messy blonde wig with bangs pointing every direction gives his hair, and a little under-eye shading makes him look properly tired. The starter cord at the chest is the detail fans notice. I'd make the handle from soft foam on a loop of elastic, sized so it hangs without dragging the shirt open. A small dog plush is a funny, harmless prop. The loose clothes let you move freely through crowds and casual photos.
14. Luffy Cosplay Costume

Luffy is affordable, comfortable and well suited to warm events. Start with a sleeveless red vest or open red shirt, knee-length denim shorts with rolled cuffs, a yellow waist sash and brown sandals with heel straps. The straw hat with a red band is non-negotiable, and a cheap one tends to be too shallow and blows off; I sew a length of hat elastic inside the band. A short black wig with uneven spiked layers, or your own dark hair tousled, works. Draw the small scar under his eye with brown waterproof liner. A canvas backpack can hold water. A broad grin and a hand on the hat brim make him easy to identify.
15. Nami Cosplay Costume

Nami has several outfits, and her classic casual one is the easiest to live in. A fitted green-and-white striped tee goes with high-waisted jeans or a denim skirt over fitted shorts, plus brown ankle boots or sandals depending on the weather. A shoulder-length orange wig with side-swept bangs and light waves suits her, with peach blush, bronze shadow and a coral gloss. For her shoulder tattoo, use a removable cosmetic transfer or skip it entirely. A rolled paper map and a small compass carry the navigator theme, and gold hoops finish the face. I'd choose a cotton stripe over a synthetic one, because a cotton tee breathes on a packed or sunny day.
16. Roronoa Zoro Cosplay Costume

Zoro's green palette gives a bold costume with very little sewing. Wear a fitted white or dark green shirt with black trousers and a wide green waist sash, and add a long green coat for his later look. Sturdy black boots handle hours of standing. The short moss-green wig needs firm, separated spikes, and a green-tinted brow product connects it to your face. Add three small gold earrings to one ear, with clip-ons if your ears aren't pierced. A dark bandanna on the upper arm gives an alternate look for photos. Most venues limit sword props, so I'd leave the swords home and let the green, the earrings and the scowl tell people who you are.
17. Nico Robin Cosplay Costume

Nico Robin's purple outfit sits closer to fashion than armour. Choose a fitted purple zip-front top with a coordinating midi skirt or tailored trousers, and layer a long dark coat or a cropped jacket on top depending on which era you prefer. Knee-high boots with low heels keep it sleek. A long black wig with straight bangs needs to stay smooth, so I'd trim the bangs a little at a time while the wig is on a head form, since synthetic fringe never grows back. Purple shadow, elongated liner and a rose-brown lip finish her face, and sunglasses can sit on top of the head. An antique-looking book makes a fitting prop.
18. Naruto Uzumaki Cosplay Costume

Naruto's orange and black is easy to spot in any crowd, which also makes him easy for friends to find. Choose a zip-front orange jacket with black shoulder panels and matching orange trousers, or use orange joggers with a fitted athletic jacket for a lighter version. Dark open-toe boots over black socks, or black sneakers with wrapped ankles, finish the base. Style a short bright-blonde wig into separated spikes and tie the forehead band across the hairline. Draw three fine whiskers on each cheek with waterproof brown liner, and set them with powder so they don't smudge. Carry a small orange pouch for essentials. The sportswear base suits a first-timer.
19. Sakura Haruno Cosplay Costume

Sakura's red tunic is colourful and easy to move in. Wear a sleeveless red dress or side-slit tunic over fitted black shorts, with pale elbow guards and black gloves if you want them, plus dark knee socks and low black boots. A short pink wig with clean layers and a side part takes the red headband across the crown. Pink blush, soft green eye makeup and the small forehead diamond in a skin-safe cosmetic adhesive finish her face. The side slits are where fit goes wrong. I'd pin them at home and walk a flight of stairs before stitching, then keep fitted shorts underneath anyway. A compact belt pouch holds your things.
20. Hinata Hyuga Cosplay Costume

Hinata is a comfortable, modest choice for anyone who prefers layers. Start with navy jogger-style pants and a pale lavender zip-front jacket with a cream upper panel, then add black open-toe boots or sneakers with dark ankle wraps. Her blunt bob is harder to fake than it looks; buy the wig a little long and trim the bangs straight while it's on a head form. Pale lavender shadow can hint at her eyes without contact lenses, with soft pink blush and a natural lip. Wear the forehead band around the neck or across the hairline. A navy belt pouch completes the look. The jacket is warm, so it suits cooler days.
21. Mikasa Ackerman Cosplay Costume

Mikasa's layered uniform is made of practical pieces. Wear a white button-down, fitted tan jacket, white trousers and a brown waist wrap, with knee-high brown riding boots and lightweight brown harness straps over the clothing. The harness is the part to rehearse. Faux-leather straps twist and slide, so I tack them to the trousers at a few points and sit down in them before the day. A short black angled bob frames her face, and the deep red scarf supplies the colour that tells everyone who she is. Matte foundation and straight brows suit her. A white undershirt stops the jacket feeling rough. Leave bulky gear behind.
22. Levi Ackerman Cosplay Costume

Levi shares Mikasa's uniform base but needs sharper tailoring. Pair a white shirt with fitted white or beige trousers, a short tan jacket, brown harness details and tall brown boots, with a dark green cape for photos in a fabric light enough to fold into a bag. The jacket should be fitted through the shoulders but leave room to lift your arms. A short black wig with an undercut look and a side-swept fringe gives his hair. Cool contour under the cheekbones and straight brows suggest his stern expression. His cravat is the detail people miss; I'd tie it from a soft cotton square so it sits flat. A cleaning cloth and teacup make funny, safe props.
23. Deku Cosplay Costume

Deku's green hero suit is energetic and full of colour. Choose a green stretch jumpsuit with black panels, white details and red accents at the belt, and add red high-tops with thick white soles. Make the knee pads, gloves and neck guard from lightweight foam. I seal the foam and paint it with a flexible paint, because standard acrylic cracks where the knee pads bend. A short dark green wig with tousled spikes and darker roots suits him, and freckles drawn with a fine brown pencil finish the face. Let the hood hang behind your shoulders. Before the day, sit, walk and raise your arms in the jumpsuit to check it moves with you.
24. Ochaco Uraraka Cosplay Costume

Ochaco's pink-and-black suit is cheerful and fitted. Begin with a black and navy stretch bodysuit with pink piping and a white chest panel, then add pink wrist cuffs, a rounded neckpiece and boot covers in flexible foam. Wear supportive black sneakers under the covers instead of rigid costume shoes. Her chestnut bob curves toward the cheeks, and rosy blush with a pink lip suits her upbeat look. Keep the foam pieces hollow and light. If a full bodysuit feels like too much, rebuild the colour blocking on black leggings and a fitted athletic top. That version costs less, and I find it often fits better than a cheap printed suit.
25. Harley Quinn Cosplay Costume

Classic Harley Quinn can be theatrical and still comfortable. Choose a modest red-and-black diamond-pattern jumpsuit, or a red top with one red and one black trouser leg, plus a white ruffled collar, black gloves and flat lace-up boots. Wear a red-and-black jester hood, or put a blonde wig in two high pigtails with matching ribbons. Graphic makeup works with pale foundation, red and black eye accents and a deep red lip. Pale foundation tends to transfer onto that white collar, so set it well with powder and keep the ruff a little loose at the neck. A small diamond-print bag stores your phone. Skip big props you'll get tired of carrying.
26. Wonder Woman Cosplay Costume

Wonder Woman's red, blue and gold give a confident costume. Wear a structured red bodice over a supportive base layer, with a blue knee-length skirt, skort or fitted trousers dotted with small white stars. Add a gold belt, wrist cuffs, a tiara and red knee-high boots with walkable soles. Her gold pieces are often cut from foam or thin plastic; I sand and seal every edge, since a raw edge rubs a red line into your wrist by afternoon. A long dark brown wig in glossy waves, bronze shadow and a classic red lip finish her face. A coiled gold rope can hang securely at the waist. Hands-on-hips poses show the whole costume.
27. Scarlet Witch Cosplay Costume

Scarlet Witch's deep red layers suit cooler events. Start with a fitted burgundy top and trousers, or a long red dress with a structured waist, and add a flowing crimson coat or split overskirt that moves in photos. Black or red knee-high boots with low stable heels finish the base. A long auburn wig in loose waves, with the front pulled back from the face, suits her. The crown is the hard part to keep upright. A foam crown on a hidden headband, angled slightly back, sits better than one pinned straight up. Red and plum shadow with a berry lip suit the colour story. Spell-casting poses with open hands mean you need no prop at all.
28. Loki Cosplay Costume

Loki's green and gold reward anyone who enjoys layered tailoring. Wear a dark green tunic or long coat over black fitted trousers and a black mock-neck, then add gold shoulder details, a wide metallic belt and black knee-high boots. The horned headpiece needs to be light. Build it from foam, keep the horns hollow where you can, and anchor it with elastic under the hair at the back, because tall horns lever forward with every nod. A long black wig in brushed-back waves suits him, with cool foundation and dark brows. Add a green cape for photos and take it off in crowds. Choose flexible materials over heavy armour.
29. Doctor Strange Cosplay Costume

Doctor Strange's robes give a detailed look without any armour build. Begin with a navy tunic and trousers, a wide brown belt and crossed straps at the waist, and dark brown boots with cushioned soles. The red high-collar cape is the dramatic piece, and a collar that tall will droop unless it's interfaced firmly; I'd use a heavy fusible interfacing or a layer of buckram inside it. Keep the cape short enough not to drag. A dark wig with silver at the temples suits him, and a goatee can be filled with a cosmetic pencil. A green pendant in resin or foam sits at the chest. Circular hand gestures do the rest.
30. Princess Zelda Cosplay Costume

Zelda's royal dress is a lovely project for anyone who enjoys sewing and fine detail. Choose a long white gown with a fitted purple bodice, gold trim and a flowing purple front panel, plus a gold belt, pointed ear cuffs, long white gloves and cream flats hidden under the hem. A long golden-blonde wig with braided side sections and curled ends takes a small gold tiara at the forehead. Luminous makeup with peach blush and lavender shadow suits her. White gowns pick up grime at the hem fast, so I hem it just above the floor and sew a hidden wrist loop inside so you can lift it on stairs. A small embroidered pouch makes a safe accessory.
31. Link Cosplay Costume

Link's green adventurer outfit can come almost entirely from thrifted and handmade pieces. Wear a forest-green tunic over a cream long-sleeve shirt and fitted tan trousers, with a brown belt, crossbody strap, fingerless gloves and knee-high boots. The long green cap and pointed ear tips finish the outline; attach the ears with a skin-safe adhesive you've patch-tested. A chin-length blonde wig with side-swept bangs suits him, with natural makeup and a little warm contour. A blue instrument or a map scroll can replace the sword. I weather the belt and boots lightly with a dry brush of brown, which makes the outfit look travelled rather than freshly bought.
32. Tifa Lockhart Cosplay Costume

Tifa's sporty outfit adapts well for comfort and coverage. Pair a fitted white cropped tank over a supportive black camisole with a black pleated skort or high-waisted shorts, and add black thigh-high socks, red-and-black gloves, suspenders and red lace-up boots with cushioned soles. Her very long black wig tangles quickly, so tie it loosely near the ends and keep it off the back of chairs. Thigh-high socks are the other weak point: they roll down by midday unless you add a strip of silicone grip or use a little body-safe adhesive. Neutral makeup and a rose lip suit her. Test the suspenders for rubbing, and wear a small black belt bag.
33. Aerith Gainsborough Cosplay Costume

Aerith's pink dress is comfortable enough for a full day. Wear a button-front pink midi dress with a fitted waist under a cropped red jacket, with brown lace-up ankle boots and simple silver bracelets. A long chestnut-brown wig in a thick braid, with curled face-framing pieces, takes the large pink ribbon at the back. I'd make that ribbon from a stiff grosgrain or a bow with a light interfacing inside, because a soft satin bow collapses into a limp knot. Fresh makeup with soft brown shadow and rosy lips suits her. Carry a small basket of artificial flowers. Pick a fabric that resists creasing, and wear fitted shorts underneath for sitting and posing.
34. Hatsune Miku Cosplay Costume

Miku's turquoise hair and futuristic uniform are a joy to style. Wear a sleeveless gray top with teal trim, a black pleated skirt, detached black arm sleeves and thigh-high socks, with black shoes or platform sneakers carrying turquoise accents. The long twin-tail wig is the main feature, and also the heaviest part of the costume. Most are sold as a short base wig plus clip-on tails, which is the version I'd choose, since you can unclip the tails to travel and avoid knots. Neat bangs above the brows, teal liner and pink blush suit her. Small rectangular hair clips and a headset finish the silhouette. Fan the tails out once you arrive for full-length photos.
35. KPop Demon Hunters Rumi Cosplay Costume

Rumi gives a very current pop-fantasy look with real stage presence. A fan-made version works with a cropped blue jacket, fitted black top, high-waisted purple pants and supportive platform boots, plus turquoise panels, metallic trim, fingerless gloves and layered earrings. Style a long violet wig in a high ponytail with loose face-framing pieces. A long synthetic ponytail pulls the wig backward, so I'd anchor the base with wig clips and add a few pins through the ponytail wrap. Purple winged liner, shimmering blue shadow and a berry gloss suit her stage face. A headset or glowing microphone prop is light to carry. Make sure you can dance and sit in the pants.
Face Marks, Ear Tips and Coloured Lenses Without Sore Skin
A lot of these characters rely on something stuck or drawn on the face: Tanjiro's forehead mark, Naruto's whiskers, Sakura's diamond, Link's ears, Gojo's or Power's eyes. These are the parts most likely to irritate skin, so they deserve a little planning.
- Patch-test every adhesive and face product on the inside of your wrist a day ahead. Redness or itching means a different product.
- Draw marks with cosmetic liners or face paints made for skin, never craft paint or markers, and set them with a translucent powder so they survive a warm room.
- Coloured contact lenses are medical devices. Wear them only after a proper fitting from an eye professional, never share them, and take them out the moment your eyes feel dry or sore.
- Remove adhesive with a remover or an oil-based cleanser, slowly, rather than peeling ear tips or gems straight off.
Small Things That Make a First Day Easier
Most of the discomfort on a first day in costume has nothing to do with the costume looking right. It comes from shoes, heat and closures. Break your shoes in for a week, and add cushioned insoles to any boots. Plan your bathroom route through the outfit: a bodysuit with a back zip you can't reach is a real problem. Carry water, a small snack, safety pins, makeup wipes and a spare hair tie in a bag that matches the character, so it doesn't spoil photos. And take breaks. A wig and a heavy coat warm you up faster than you expect indoors.
Which Character Fits a First Day Out?
A good first cosplay comes down to details, not difficulty. Start with the character's colours and main garments, then add a wig styled to the right shape, comfortable shoes, matching makeup and one prop you can manage. If this is your first build, Denji, Luffy or Gojo come together from basics in an afternoon. If you sew, Zelda's gown, Loki's layers or Miku's wig give you something to get your teeth into. Whichever you pick, wear the full costume at home, sit, walk and pack every removable piece, and read the venue's prop rules. A costume you can enjoy all day will always look better than an exact copy you can't wait to take off.
