A good couple costume does one job: when you walk in together, people get the joke or the characters before you say a word. Below are fifty pairings, from the Addams family and Scooby-Doo to food puns and decade looks, and for each one I cover the clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes. I've written them so either partner can take either role, and so most of the base pieces can come out of a closet or a thrift rack. Swap colours or genders freely; what matters is that the two halves still answer each other.

Making Two Outfits Answer Each Other
Most couple costumes fall apart for one reason: each person dresses well on their own, and the two looks never meet. When I style a pair, I decide on the link before anything else is bought.
- Share one exact colour. Hold both fabrics together in daylight; two reds that are almost the same look like a mistake in photos.
- Match the effort level. If one of you wears a wig, full makeup and a cape while the other is in jeans, the costume reads as one person and a plus-one.
- Keep the scale similar. A huge headpiece next to a small one looks lopsided, so either both of you go big or both keep it at headband size.
- Give each person one piece that only makes sense next to the other: the rose and the dress, the net and the tail, the cheese and the ears.
- Do a test stand in front of a mirror, side by side, a few days before. You'll spot what's missing much faster together than apart.
That last step catches almost everything. Something always shows up then, usually that one person needs a darker shoe or a second accessory to balance the outline.
1. Morticia And Gomez Addams Couple Costume

Morticia and Gomez is the pairing I suggest to couples who own a lot of black and hate wearing anything silly. She needs a floor-length black dress with long sleeves and a hem that flares slightly at the floor, straight black hair, cool-toned makeup and a dark lip; he needs a pinstripe suit, white shirt, dark tie, slicked hair and a neat mustache. The detail most people miss is Morticia's hem. If it pools on the ground you'll be stepped on all night, so I hem it to just brush the top of the shoe and wear ankle boots underneath instead of pumps. One artificial rose in his lapel or her hand is all the prop you need.
2. Barbie And Ken Couple Costume

Barbie and Ken read from across a room because the colour does the work. One of you wears a hot-pink dress or a pink top and skirt with white pumps, big sunglasses, glossy makeup and soft blonde curls or a wig; the other wears a pastel striped shirt, tailored shorts, white sneakers and very tidy hair. I'd match the exact pink between the two outfits, even if Ken only carries it in a pocket square or a visor, because two clashing pinks look accidental. Roller-skate versions are fun for photos but swap to sneakers for any walking. You can push it toward Western, beach or gym Barbie and the palette still carries it.
3. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couple Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia live or die on the stripes. He wears a black-and-white striped suit, white shirt, black boots and messy pale hair, with light face makeup and soft gray shading around the eyes; she wears the red layered dress and red veil, dark ankle boots, pale makeup and tousled black hair. When I hunt for the striped suit, I look for stripes at least an inch wide, since thin pinstripes vanish in party lighting. The easier Lydia is her black dress, tights and wide-brim hat, and a small vintage-style camera gives her something to do with her hands. Thrifted separates keep this one surprisingly cheap.
4. Wednesday And Enid Couple Costume

Wednesday and Enid suit two people with opposite taste, which is half the fun. Wednesday is a black dress with a crisp white collar, black tights, loafers and two tight braids, with matte, understated makeup and maybe a cool-toned lip. Enid is a striped pastel sweater, bright pleated skirt, patterned tights, colourful sneakers or ankle boots, waved blonde hair streaked pink and blue, and cheerful pastel eye makeup. A detachable white collar is the piece I'd buy or sew first, because a plain black dress becomes Wednesday the second it goes on. Matching blazers or backpacks tie the two together, and both outfits are easy to walk in.
5. Frankenstein And Bride Couple Costume

Frankenstein's monster and his Bride look dramatic with no gore at all. The monster wears a slightly oversized black blazer, dark shirt, cropped trousers and chunky black boots, with hair flattened into a square shape and green-tinted makeup contoured lightly at the brows and cheekbones. The Bride wears a long, draped white dress, white boots and a towering black wig streaked with white, plus pale makeup, defined brows and a muted lip. That tall wig is heavier than it looks, so I pin it to a braided base and take a break from it halfway through the night. Fray the fabric edges a little for an aged lab feel, and think about stairs before you pick platforms or a floor-length skirt.
6. Vampire Count And Countess Couple Costume

Velvet, satin and two high-collared capes make a vampire count and countess feel formal rather than costume-shop. One partner wears a black suit, white ruffled shirt, burgundy vest, dark trousers and polished boots; the other wears a long black or deep-red dress with lace sleeves, a fitted waist and comfortable heeled boots. Both get neatly styled dark hair, pale foundation, softly smoky eyes and a rich berry lip. I tell people to buy the fangs last and pick the kind that slip out easily, because nobody can eat or talk properly in a fixed set. A cameo brooch at the collar and a plastic goblet finish it, and the whole look stays glamorous instead of gruesome.
7. Witch And Wizard Couple Costume

A witch and wizard pairing is friendly and easy to wear in public. The witch has a black midi dress, striped tights, buckled ankle boots, a wide-brim pointed hat, purple eye makeup, loose curls and a small broom; the wizard has a midnight-blue robe over dark trousers and a plain shirt, lace-up boots and a soft pointed hat. I hand-stitch felt or foil stars onto the robe rather than gluing them, since glued stars peel off as soon as the robe gets folded in a car. Keep capes short enough that you won't trip on the stairs, and make sure the hat brims don't drop over anyone's eyes. A matching jewel-toned scarf or moon pin on each of you links the pair.
8. Ghost Bride And Groom Couple Costume

A ghost bride and groom is one of the best uses I know for secondhand formalwear. She wears a white or pale gray dress, a soft tulle veil, pearl-look jewellery and white flats or ankle boots; he wears a gray suit, white shirt, loosened tie and scuffed dress shoes. To make both look faded, I dust the fabric with washable gray colour or layer uneven strips of gauze, and I always test that colour on a seam first because some thrifted polyester takes it blotchy. Loose hair, pale makeup and soft gray under the eyes keep it gentle. Give her a white artificial bouquet, him a faded boutonniere, and keep any trailing fabric short for crowded rooms.
9. Matching Skeleton Couple Costume

Matching skeletons are the pair I fall back on when someone texts me two days before a party. Start from black long-sleeve shirts and black pants or leggings, then add white felt or fabric-paint bones; one of you can switch to a skeleton-print dress while the other wears a sweatshirt and joggers. Felt bones stay put far better if you stitch them down or use fabric glue made for stretch, because ordinary craft glue cracks the first time you bend an elbow. Do the face in clean black-and-white shapes around the eyes, nose and jaw. Black sneakers keep the silhouette unbroken, bow ties or small top hats add personality, and reflective bone tape helps once it's dark outside.
10. Black Cat And Mouse Couple Costume

A black cat and a mouse come together almost entirely from everyday clothes. The cat wears a fitted black top, black pants or a skater skirt, black boots, ears and a fabric tail, with a small black nose, whiskers, winged liner and a sleek ponytail. The mouse wears a gray sweater with gray trousers or a soft dress, round ears lined in pink, gray sneakers, a thin tail, a pink nose and light whiskers. My one rule with tails is to stitch them to the waistband rather than pinning them, and to cut them so they end well above the floor. A foam cheese wedge makes the story clear, and nobody has to wear a bulky animal suit.
11. Bee And Beekeeper Couple Costume

Yellow and black stripes mean nobody has to guess what the bee is. The bee wears a striped shirt with black pants, a yellow skirt or a soft tulle layer, plus sheer wings, an antenna headband, yellow eye makeup and black sneakers or ankle boots. The beekeeper wears beige coveralls, work boots, protective-style gloves and a wide-brim hat with lightweight mesh. I pin that mesh back from the face, or hang it only at the sides, so the beekeeper can still see and drink. An empty honey-style jar or a fake flower is a harmless prop, and repeating one yellow accent on the beekeeper connects you. These bright colours are especially good at daytime events.
12. Fisherman And Mermaid Couple Costume

The fisherman and mermaid split practical and shimmery in a way that's very easy to wear. He wears waterproof overalls, a plaid shirt, rubber boots and a knit cap, with a light net over one shoulder and an empty tackle-style box; she wears a fitted teal skirt that flares at the hem, a sequined top, pearl accessories and iridescent flats. Loose waves, blue-green eye makeup and a shell headband or star clips finish her. I steer people away from true tail skirts unless they're staying seated, because a tail that binds the knees makes stairs genuinely dangerous. The fisherman's layers also mean this pair handles a cold night or a mild one.
13. Astronaut And Alien Couple Costume

An astronaut and alien pairing is a good excuse to raid the activewear drawer. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, white sneakers or boots and fabric mission patches, with a light helmet carried under one arm, silver gloves and a small backpack. The alien wears a metallic green or silver outfit, matching leggings, platform sneakers and an antenna headband, plus green shimmer makeup, silver liner and a sleek ponytail or a bright wig. I'd sew the patches on rather than iron them, because iron-on patches lift from slick jumpsuit fabric. Reflective trims on both of you tie the costumes together. Skip full masks if the party is crowded.
14. Sun And Moon Couple Costume

Sun and moon is a pairing that doesn't depend on anyone knowing a film. The sun wears a gold dress, jumpsuit or shirt and trousers with metallic shoes, warm gold eye makeup, soft waves and a headpiece of gold rays; the moon wears navy or silver, star-patterned tights, silver boots, a crescent headband, cool shimmer and a few adhesive face stars. I build the sun rays from craft foam or card on a wide headband and keep them short, because a full halo catches on every doorframe. Matching capes stitched with faint constellations link you without hiding the outfits. It's flexible for any gender and very easy to adapt.
15. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couple Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is the DIY project I'd give a couple who has one free evening. One of you wears tan or light brown, the other purple or red. Cut two big felt bread slices for each person, front and back, hang them from shoulder straps, and paint or appliqué the filling on each panel. Use stiff felt or back soft felt with interfacing, since floppy panels fold over in a few hours and the joke disappears. Brown sneakers for peanut butter and berry shoes for jelly, simple makeup, and a small label on each panel if you want it read instantly. Leave real food and anything sticky at home.
16. Ketchup And Mustard Couple Costume

Ketchup and mustard is two sweatsuits and a bit of foam. One partner wears a red sweatshirt, red pants and sneakers; the other wears the same in yellow. The cone-shaped caps go on comfortable headbands, and big white bottle labels go on the shirts with removable fabric sheets so the sweatshirts survive the night unharmed. I'd make the caps from felt over a thin foam cone rather than hard card, because card cones crush the first time you hug someone. Red or gold liner, optional white cartoon gloves and a light picnic basket round it out, and there's room for thermals underneath.
17. Salt And Pepper Couple Costume

Salt and pepper is about as minimal as a couple costume gets. One of you dresses all in white with white sneakers, the other all in black or charcoal. Add large removable letters to each shirt and make shaker hats from light poster board with a few small circles drawn on top for the holes. White or black gloves carry the monochrome all the way out, and a little silver shimmer or a face gem looks tidy. Black lint shows terribly on the white partner, so I keep a lint roller in a pocket. Fitted jumpsuits look sleeker, sweats are comfier, and you probably own most of this already.
18. Plug And Socket Couple Costume

The plug and socket joke needs two flat panels and a careful eye for where they sit. Both of you wear a black shirt, black pants and sneakers. The plug's rectangular board gets two soft foam prongs; the socket's white or gray board gets two painted openings. I keep each panel above the hip and narrower than the shoulders, otherwise you can't sit down, and cardboard edges catch on everyone you pass in a crowd. Silver makeup accents fit the electrical theme, and reflective tape on the edges helps outdoors. Don't use real cords or metal, and don't connect the two costumes.
19. Painter And Canvas Couple Costume

Painter and canvas is a gift for crafty couples. The painter wears a denim shirt, splattered overalls, a beret and sneakers, carrying a light palette and an oversized brush. The canvas wears a white outfit covered in fabric shapes or a painted removable apron, framed by a gold foam border at the torso. Paint your splatters days ahead and let them cure, because fabric paint that's still tacky on the night ends up on the car seats and on everyone you hug. Cut the frame's armholes wider than you think you need. Bright makeup and clips that echo the paint colours link you both.
20. Magician And Rabbit Couple Costume

A stage magician and his rabbit are an easy, cheerful pair. The magician wears a black suit, white shirt, red bow tie, black dress shoes, a tall top hat and white gloves, with a deck of oversized paper cards; the rabbit wears a white sweater with white pants or a soft dress, pink-lined ears, a fluffy tail, white sneakers, a pale pink nose and fine whiskers. Putting the same red bow tie or a black vest on the rabbit is the small move that makes it read as a single act. Keep his cape short. White knits pill and pick up lint fast, so I'd choose a smoother cotton sweater if you have one.
21. Ringmaster And Clown Couple Costume

Ringmaster and clown give you that vintage circus colour without anything scary. The ringmaster wears a fitted red jacket with gold trim, black trousers, tall black boots, a crisp white shirt and a mini top hat, with natural makeup; the clown wears bright suspenders, patterned trousers, a colourful shirt and flexible high-tops. I keep the clown face cheerful: rosy cheeks, a small painted nose and a few clean geometric shapes, and nothing around the mouth that turns sinister in photos. Pigtails or curls work as well as a wig. Juggling balls or a paper admission sign make good props, and the tailored jacket next to the baggy clown shape is what sells the pair.
22. Farmer And Scarecrow Couple Costume

Farmer and scarecrow are made for pumpkin patches and outdoor festivals. The farmer wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots, a straw hat and a bandana, with an empty harvest basket. The scarecrow layers patched overalls over a mustard or rust shirt with lace-up boots, a floppy hat and raffia tied at the cuffs, plus brown stitch lines around the mouth and warm orange cheeks. I tie the raffia in short, tight bunches; long loose strands shed all night and end up near the face or under the feet. A few artificial leaves on both of you are enough decoration, and every piece layers well for a cold evening.
23. Safari Guide And Wildcat Couple Costume

A safari guide and a wildcat mix plain utility clothes with one loud print. The guide wears a khaki shirt, cargo pants or shorts, hiking boots and a wide-brim hat, with cardboard binoculars and a canvas crossbody bag; the wildcat wears a leopard-print top, black leggings, flexible boots, rounded ears and a fabric tail, with bronze eyes, a small nose, whiskers and textured hair. I keep the leopard print to one piece, since print on print makes the outline mushy from a distance. Skip cages or anything that looks like a trap. All those pockets are handy at a long event, and most of it can be worn again.
24. Sherlock Holmes And Watson Couple Costume

Sherlock and Watson are friends in the stories, but they make a lovely couple or best-friend pair. Sherlock wears a checked cape or long coat over a shirt and tailored trousers, lace-up boots, a deerstalker-style cap and carries a magnifying glass. Watson wears a tweed blazer, sweater vest, collared shirt, trousers and brown dress shoes, maybe with a neat mustache and a notebook for clues. Keep both of you in the same browns, grays, olives and burgundies so the two outfits look like they belong together. Tweed and wool are the reason I like this one for October: it's the warmest costume on the list without looking bundled.
25. Men In Black Agents Couple Costume

Men in Black is the costume for a couple who owns suits and very little patience. Each of you needs a black blazer, white shirt, black trousers, narrow black tie, polished black shoes and dark sunglasses, plus neatly styled hair. Fully matching agents read better than one agent and one alien, in my experience, so I'd only add alien hints if they're subtle. Silver watches or a touch of metallic makeup are enough of a futuristic note. Carry ID badges, notebooks or a silver flashlight, never anything that looks like a weapon, and choose breathable shirts if you'll be out for hours.
26. Top Gun Pilot Couple Costume

Top Gun pilots work for any couple and need almost no styling. Both of you wear olive flight suits with patches, white tees underneath, aviators and brown or black lace-up boots; olive utility jumpsuits, or cargo pants with bomber jackets, are the fallback if flight suits are hard to find. Personalised call-sign patches are the fun part, and I'd stitch or safety-pin them rather than iron them onto a cheap jumpsuit. Keep hair neat, pull long hair into a ponytail and add a little bronzer. A helmet is fine for photos but you won't want to carry it all night, and military props are best left out.
27. Sandy And Danny Grease Couple Costume

Sandy and Danny's final-scene look is mostly black clothing and good hair. Sandy wears high-waisted black pants, an off-the-shoulder black top, a cropped jacket, gold hoops and red heels or comfier black pumps, with soft blonde curls, red lipstick and winged liner. Danny wears a black tee, black jeans, a leather-look jacket and loafers or boots, with his hair slicked back using a strong product. The skin-tight pants are where people suffer, so I'd look for stretch fabric and shoes you've already broken in. Vintage sunglasses or letter details are a bonus; the silhouettes carry it on their own.
28. Daphne And Fred Scooby-Doo Couple Costume

Daphne and Fred are all about getting the colours right. Daphne wears a long-sleeve purple mini or midi dress, a green neck scarf, pink tights, purple flats or low boots and a smooth headband over red hair or a wig; Fred wears a white sweater or shirt, blue trousers, an orange neck scarf, brown shoes and neat blonde hair. Those two neck scarves are the giveaway, so I'd buy them first and build the rest around their exact shades. Magnifying glasses or notebooks add the mystery angle, and a little lavender on Daphne's lids is plenty of makeup. Everything here can come from a thrift store.
29. Velma And Shaggy Scooby-Doo Couple Costume

Velma and Shaggy are the comfiest pair in the Scooby gang. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red flats and square glasses, with a short brown bob or wig and natural makeup with soft brows. Shaggy wears an oversized green tee, loose brown pants, casual shoes and messy brown hair. For the glasses, use lens-free frames or clear lenses; tinted or prescription frames that aren't yours blur everything after dark. A foam sandwich or a mystery notebook adds humour, and the relaxed fit makes this one of the easiest character pairs to put together cheaply.
30. Mario And Princess Peach Couple Costume

Mario and Princess Peach are pure colour, which is exactly why kids at a family party will shout their names. Mario wears denim overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, brown work boots, white gloves and a red cap with a simple letter emblem, plus a costume mustache or one drawn on with skin-safe makeup. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, white gloves, comfortable pink shoes and a light gold crown, with loose blonde waves, rosy cheeks and soft blue shadow. A stick-on mustache lets go once you start sweating, so I keep spare adhesive in a pocket. Plush stars or mushrooms are easy props, and you can shorten Peach's dress for a busy venue.
31. Luigi And Daisy Couple Costume

Luigi and Daisy are the pick for a couple who wants the video game idea without being the third Mario at the party. Luigi wears blue denim overalls over a green shirt, a green cap, white gloves, brown boots and a costume mustache; Daisy wears a yellow dress with orange trim, white gloves, orange or yellow flats and a small gold crown, with brown or auburn waves and warm peach makeup. A flower brooch at her neckline helps people tell her apart from Peach. I anchor both the crown and the cap with bobby pins or a thin elastic, because they slide off the moment you laugh. Most of this comes out of an ordinary closet.
32. Link And Zelda Couple Costume

Link and Zelda suit couples who like to sew a little. Link wears a green tunic over a cream long-sleeve shirt, fitted brown pants, sturdy boots, a pointed green cap and a crossbody belt; Zelda wears a long white or lavender dress with gold trim, a decorative belt, pointed ear cuffs and boots hidden under the hem, with braided blonde hair and a touch of gold around the eyes. If you're sewing the tunic, cut it from a cotton twill or linen-look fabric rather than shiny polyester, which reads as packaged costume. A small glowing blue prop links you both, and sharp or combat-themed pieces aren't needed for anyone to place the characters.
33. Peter Pan And Tinker Bell Couple Costume

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell share green but each has its own outline. Peter wears a green tunic with a jagged hem, brown leggings, a rope belt, soft brown boots and a pointed green cap with a red feather; Tinker Bell wears a light-green dress, sheer wings, green ballet flats and a neat high bun, with gold shimmer on the eyes and a soft pink lip. Cutting the jagged hem is simple on felt or fleece, since neither frays, and that's the fabric I'd use. Pick narrow wings for crowded rooms, and if you carry paper stars, make them biodegradable. It's a light costume best kept for indoor parties or mild weather.
34. Alice And Mad Hatter Couple Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter pair a tidy storybook look with organised chaos. Alice wears a blue knee-length dress, white apron, white tights, black Mary Janes and a black ribbon headband, with smooth blonde hair and rosy, natural makeup. The Hatter layers a colourful tailcoat over a patterned vest, shirt, bow tie and striped trousers with lace-up boots, bright eye makeup, tousled orange hair and an oversized top hat with a paper tag. With that much pattern on him, I repeat Alice's blue or white somewhere in his outfit so you look like a pair. Carry a plastic teacup, never a real one, and have fun thrifting the Hatter's pieces.
35. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couple Costume

Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf tell a story with a soft Halloween bite. She wears a white blouse, black or red skirt, opaque tights, ankle boots and a bright red hooded cape, with braids, rosy makeup and a wicker basket of fake flowers. He wears gray clothes, a faux-fur vest, flexible boots, pointed ears and a soft tail, with gray contouring, a black nose and light whisker marks instead of a full mask. Faux fur sheds on everything, so I trim the fur back along the seams and lint-roll it before leaving. Fingerless faux-fur gloves suggest paws and keep hands free, and her cape should finish well above the floor.
36. Dorothy And Scarecrow Couple Costume

Dorothy and the Scarecrow are two of the simplest characters to build from thrifted pieces. Dorothy wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white blouse, white ankle socks, red flats and braided pigtails with blue ribbons, carrying a woven basket with a plush dog. The Scarecrow wears patched brown trousers, a green or plaid shirt, rope at the waist, soft lace-up boots, a floppy hat, raffia, warm cheeks and stitched lines around the mouth. If you can't find red sequined shoes, I glue loose sequins over plain red flats with a flexible fabric glue. Keep the straw-like trim away from eyes and feet, and add thermals when it gets cold.
37. Glinda And Elphaba Couple Costume

Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked are the most theatrical pair here. Glinda wears a full pale-pink dress, sparkly flats, a silver crown and a wand, with polished blonde curls, luminous pink makeup and a few face gems; Elphaba wears a long black dress, fitted jacket or cape, pointed hat and black ankle boots, with green face makeup, dark brows and black braided or waved hair. That green is the hard part. I'd patch-test the paint on the inside of the wrist a day ahead, set it with powder so it doesn't transfer to her collar, and leave proper time to take it off with an oil cleanser. Silver touches on both outfits help the pink and black sit together.
38. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are romantic but practical. Rapunzel wears a lavender dress with a lace-up bodice and puff sleeves, comfortable flats and very long blonde hair worked into a flower-studded braid, with soft pink makeup and a paper lantern; Flynn wears a cream shirt under a teal vest, fitted brown pants, a wide belt, knee-high brown boots and a small satchel, with brown hair that's slightly messy. Long braided wigs pull at the scalp after a few hours, so I'd use a shorter braid extension clipped into your own hair. A couple of the same artificial flowers pinned to Flynn's vest ties him to her.
39. Shrek And Fiona Couple Costume

Shrek and Fiona are funny, modest and easy to fit to any body. Shrek wears a cream tunic, brown vest, checked trousers, a wide belt and sturdy boots, with a bald cap or snug hood carrying rounded green ears and smooth green face makeup. Fiona wears a long emerald dress, gold-tone belt, low boots and a red braided wig, with matching green makeup and smaller ears on a headband. Buy both greens from the same product line so you match, and test them on your skin a few days before. I set green cream paint with a translucent powder, otherwise it shines and slides by the end of the night. A fabric crown or an artificial sunflower finishes Fiona.
40. Woody And Jessie Couple Costume

Woody and Jessie start from the same pair of jeans, which is why they look so coordinated. Woody wears a yellow checked shirt, cow-print vest, red neckerchief, blue jeans, brown boots and a brown cowboy hat; Jessie wears a white Western shirt with yellow details, jeans or cow-print chaps, red boots and a red cowgirl hat, with a red braid and cheerful makeup. I'd stitch the decorative rope loops onto the belt rather than carry them, so neither of you is holding props all night. Oversized belt buckles add character, sharp spurs don't belong at a party, and those sturdy boots and layers are good for outdoor events.
41. Buzz Lightyear And Bo Peep Couple Costume

Buzz Lightyear and Bo Peep contrast space armour with pastel storybook clothes. Buzz wears a white jumpsuit with green and purple fabric panels, white boots, soft gloves and a fitted purple hood; Bo Peep wears a pale-blue jumpsuit or full skirt, a pink cape, blue flats, a wide pink headband and soft blonde curls, with fresh pink makeup and a foam crook. For Buzz's chest, I use EVA foam because it heat-shapes into a curve and stays light, where hard plastic cracks and rubs. Keep the crook short enough for crowded rooms, and add a little blue to both outfits to bring them together.
42. Cruella And Dalmatian Couple Costume

Cruella and a Dalmatian is high fashion standing next to a very simple dog. Cruella wears a fitted black dress, a faux-fur coat in black and white, red gloves and red pumps, with a half-black, half-white wig, bold red lips and smoky eyes; the Dalmatian wears white sweats with irregular black felt spots, white sneakers, floppy spotted ears, a soft tail, a black nose and a few face spots. Cut the spots in deliberately uneven sizes, because uniform circles look like polka dots, not a dog. A loose red ribbon collar ties the pair together. Everything faux and light keeps it comfortable.
43. Minion And Gru Couple Costume

Minion and Gru are a warm, quick pair built from casual clothes. The Minion wears denim overalls over a yellow sweatshirt, black gloves, black boots and silver goggles, with a yellow beanie and a few black yarn strands on top instead of yellow face paint. Gru wears a black zip-front jacket, dark trousers, black shoes and a gray striped scarf, with an optional bald cap and natural makeup with lightly defined brows. I'd only buy goggles with clear lenses, since novelty goggles with mirrored or tinted lenses are close to blindfolds at night. A plush banana or a moon-shaped prop finishes it, and it's a good last-minute choice for outdoor plans.
44. Jurassic Park Scientist And Dinosaur Couple Costume

The Jurassic Park scientist and a friendly dinosaur is a human-and-creature pair that's very easy to move in. The scientist wears a khaki button-down, cargo shorts or pants, hiking boots, a sun hat, an ID badge, toy binoculars and a field notebook. The dinosaur wears a green hooded jumpsuit with felt scales, a padded tail, green sneakers and a hood with friendly eyes and fabric teeth, plus green shadow or a few small scales at the temples rather than a mask. I'd stuff the tail with polyfill instead of foam so it flops and doesn't knock drinks off tables, and keep it short. Loose clothes and flat shoes make this good for people who hate fuss.
45. 1950s Diner Couple Costume

A 1950s diner pair is cheerful and leaves you with clothes you'll wear again. The server wears a pastel button-front dress, or a collared shirt and matching skirt, with a white apron, ankle socks, sneakers, a paper hat, cat-eye makeup and a curled ponytail. The customer wears cuffed jeans, a white tee, a varsity-style jacket and loafers or clean sneakers, with a pompadour or high ponytail. The cuff on the jeans should be wide and crisp, which is easy with a quick press and is one of those details that tells people which decade you mean. An empty tray and a paper menu are your props, and red, aqua or pink accents keep you coordinated.
46. 1970s Disco Couple Costume

A 1970s disco couple is about shine and flare. One partner wears a metallic jumpsuit or halter top with high-waisted flares, platforms, hoops and big curls; the other wears a wide-collared satin shirt, flared trousers, tinted glasses and comfortable heeled boots. Both get blue, gold or purple shadow and a little shimmer, and matching metallic belts connect two different colours. Flares should break just over the shoe, so I hem them with the shoes on, not barefoot. If you plan to dance, choose a stable, chunky platform over a tall narrow one. A mirrored-ball purse is fun, and thrift stores are full of the shirts.
47. 1980s Workout Couple Costume

An 1980s workout pair is the most comfortable costume on this list. Layer bright tank tops or cropped sweatshirts over leggings, bike shorts or track pants, then add leg warmers, sweatbands, white athletic socks and supportive sneakers. Give each of you a palette, pink and turquoise for one, lime and electric blue for the other, so you clash on purpose. High side ponytails, curls or a mullet wig, vivid shadow and a lot of blush do the decade. I'd pick foam dumbbells over real ones; you'll set them down somewhere within an hour anyway. It's made for dancing.
48. Rock And Roll Pun Couple Costume

Rock and roll is a pun that needs two very different outfits. The rock wears gray clothing covered in light foam stones, gray sneakers, a headband of small painted rocks, gray-silver makeup and textured hair; the roll wears tan with a rounded foam or felt bun panel on the torso, brown shoes, a small baker's hat and warm neutral makeup. I seal painted foam with a flexible craft sealer, because plain acrylic on foam flakes off at every bend. Keep the stones away from elbows and knees, and big removable labels help anyone who doesn't get it straight away. It's family-friendly and nobody else will be wearing it.
49. Ceiling Fan And Sports Fan Couple Costume

Ceiling fan and sports fan only works if every detail explains the joke. The ceiling fan wears a neutral shirt printed with excited slogans about ceilings, a baseball cap, comfy pants and sneakers, with short, flexible foam fan blades on the back. The sports fan wears a generic team-colour jersey, track pants or jeans, sneakers, face-paint stripes and a foam finger, using numbers and colours instead of protected logos. I'd make the blades from craft foam rather than card so they bend when someone bumps them. Small handmade signs clarify the two kinds of fan, and almost everything else comes from your closet.
50. Camp Counselor And Bear Couple Costume

A camp counselor and a bear keep things cozy and outdoorsy. The counselor wears khaki shorts or cargo pants, a forest-green polo, hiking boots, a brimmed hat, a fabric badge, a small backpack and a whistle on a breakaway cord. The bear wears a brown hoodie and joggers with rounded felt ears, a soft tail, brown sneakers and fingerless faux-fur gloves, with warm brown cheeks, a black nose and natural textured hair. I sew the ears to the hoodie itself, so there's no headband to lose or push back all night. A cardboard trail sign ties you together. It's one of the warmest pairs here, which matters if the party spills outside.
When Only One of You Loves Dressing Up
It's very common for one partner to want the wig and the makeup and the other to want to wear something close to normal clothes. I don't push the reluctant one. I give them the low-effort half of a pairing where the keen partner carries the costume, and that usually ends any argument.
Good easy halves from this list: Gomez (a pinstripe suit and a drawn mustache), the beekeeper, the fisherman, the magician, Watson, Shaggy, Gru, the safari guide, the camp counselor and the jeans-and-varsity diner customer. Each one is ordinary clothing plus one prop, and none of them needs face paint. The partner who loves it can go all out as Morticia, the bee, the mermaid or the bear.
The pairing still reads because the story is complete. Nobody looks at a beekeeper standing next to a bee and wonders what he's meant to be.
Props You Won't Resent by Midnight
Every prop is something you have to hold while you eat, hug and find your keys. I keep each costume to one carried item at most, and where I can I attach it instead: the rope on Jessie's belt, the rose in a lapel, the bow tie on the rabbit, the badge on the counselor's shirt.
For anything you do carry, choose foam, felt or plastic over glass, metal or wood, and check it's short enough not to swing into someone at a crowded bar. Leave anything that looks like a weapon at home. If a prop matters for photos only, like the astronaut's helmet or Peach's plush stars, take your pictures early and leave it in the car.
Morticia and Gomez Still Get My Vote
Between the characters, the food jokes, the gentle spooky pairs and the decade looks, there's a couple costume here for almost any budget or party. If I had to pick one for a couple who has never dressed up together, it would be Morticia and Gomez: mostly black clothing you may own, one rose, and nothing to carry. Whatever you choose, dress both of you from head to toe, wear shoes you can stand in for hours, keep your eyes uncovered and your props light, and repeat one colour or detail between you so you look like a pair.
