Most Disney characters can be built from clothes you already own, because the animators gave each one a short, bold colour list. Get the colours and silhouette right, add one or two signature details in felt or ribbon, and the character reads. That's the approach for every look below: closet and thrift pieces, simple felt work, inexpensive accessories, and a full plan for clothes, hair, makeup and shoes. I've kept most of the craft work removable, so the clothes go back into normal use in November. Each one adjusts for adults, teens or kids, and I've pointed out which ones hold up for trick-or-treating and which are better for an indoor party.

When Fabric Tape Is Enough and When to Stitch
Almost every costume below adds felt shapes to ordinary clothes, and the way you attach them decides whether they last the night. Here's how I decide.
- Removable fabric tape is fine for flat shapes on woven fabric that doesn't stretch, like Snow White's sleeve ribbons on a cotton top. It struggles on stretchy jersey and fleece, where the fabric moves and the tape doesn't.
- Fabric glue holds well once fully dry, but it needs overnight drying and it can show through thin felt as a dark patch. Glue is permanent, so only use it on clothes you're happy to keep as costume.
- A few hand stitches are the most reliable. Four tacking stitches at the corners of a felt shape take minutes, hold on any fabric and snip out cleanly afterwards.
- Iron-on felt and iron-on adhesive peel on polyester and on anything that stretches. Check the fibre label before you rely on it.
- Safety pins from the inside are a fair emergency fix for big panels like Ursula's tentacles or the Mike Wazowski eye.
Craft felt from a big-box store is usually acrylic and pills quickly where it rubs. Wool-blend felt costs a little more, looks cleaner and holds stitches better, so I use it for anything near a shoulder or sleeve.
1. Easy Mickey Mouse Costume

Mickey Mouse comes together fast because his black, red, white and yellow are so familiar. Wear a fitted black top with red shorts, trousers or a knee-length skirt, and add two large white felt circles to the front of the bottoms for his buttons. I stitch the buttons with a few stitches through the centre rather than gluing them, since glue soaks into felt and shows as a dark patch. Black tights help in cold weather, and yellow trainers or flats finish the feet. Round black foam ears on a plain headband, hair tucked behind or in a low bun, a little eyeliner, rosy cheeks and white gloves complete him. It's tidy enough for an office or school day.
2. Easy Minnie Mouse Costume

Minnie Mouse is mostly polka dots, and you can fake those without sewing. Wear a fitted black top with a red-and-white dotted skirt or dress; if your red skirt is plain, cut white felt circles and fix them with fabric tape. Trace round a bottle cap or jar lid so every dot matches, which matters more than you'd think. Black tights or leggings and yellow flats, black shoes or red trainers go on the legs and feet. The red polka-dot bow sits between black foam ears, with hair in a bun, ponytail or curls beneath. A red lip, winged liner, rosy blush, white gloves and a small red bag tie the colours together.
3. Easy Winnie The Pooh Costume

Winnie the Pooh is the costume I'd suggest for a cold Halloween night. Pair a red cropped T-shirt, sweatshirt or knit top with mustard-yellow trousers, leggings or a skirt; if the red top is long, tuck it loosely so it sits high like his. Yellow trainers or soft flats keep the feet comfortable. Round yellow felt ears go on a matching headband. I cut each ear as two layers and slip a small piece of card between them, which keeps the ears from flopping forward. Hair stays natural or goes in a low bun so the ears show. Golden blush and a dab of brown liner on the nose tip finish him, with a small honey-coloured bucket as a mess-free prop.
4. Easy Tigger Costume

Tigger is orange separates plus black stripes. Start with an orange sweatshirt or T-shirt and matching leggings, joggers or loose trousers, then cut curved stripes from black felt and fix them across the sleeves, sides and legs. Cut the stripes as tapering wedges rather than straight strips; straight stripes look like a prison uniform, wedges look like a tiger. A cream felt oval on the front makes his belly. Orange trainers or black slip-ons are comfortable for walking. Add orange ears on a headband and a long striped tail pinned to the waistband with a large safety pin. Orange blush, a pink nose and black whisker dots suit his bounce.
5. Easy Donald Duck Costume

Donald Duck starts with a sailor top. Wear a bright blue sailor-style top, blue jumper or plain blue shirt with a red bow tied at the neck, and pair it with white shorts, a pleated white skirt or relaxed white trousers. Yellow tights or knee socks suggest his legs without slowing you down, and yellow trainers or flats finish them. A small blue sailor cap can be bought or folded from craft foam. I'd tack the bow to the collar with a couple of stitches so it doesn't untie itself through the evening. Hair tucks under the cap or goes in a simple ponytail, with an orange or coral lip. White gloves and a light blue crossbody bag are practical extras.
6. Easy Daisy Duck Costume

Daisy Duck runs on pastels. Start with a lavender blouse, fitted jumper or short-sleeved top and pair it with a white skirt, shorts or wide-leg trousers. Yellow tights or knee socks carry her colouring, with lavender flats or yellow trainers. Her big pink or purple bow is the detail that makes her Daisy, so set it high on a headband where cameras catch it. A bow made from a single loop of ribbon goes limp quickly; I make it from two layers of fabric with interfacing in between. Soft curls, a high bun or a sleek ponytail all suit, with purple shadow, defined lashes and pink lipstick. White gloves and a small lavender bag finish her.
7. Easy Goofy Costume

Goofy is supposed to look a little mismatched, which makes him comfortable and easy. Layer an orange turtleneck, sweatshirt or long-sleeve top under a black vest, with relaxed blue jeans or wide trousers and a brown belt. Brown boots, black trainers or big loafers finish the base. His long black felt ears attach to a green cap or beanie, and a small black felt oval on the front of the hat adds cartoon detail. Felt ears that long will twist; a strip of iron-on interfacing on the back keeps them hanging flat. Hair tucks under the cap. A little rosy colour, a black dot on the nose, white gloves and a camera suit his tourist look.
8. Easy Snow White Costume

Snow White can be built by colour blocking rather than buying a gown. A royal-blue fitted top goes over a bright yellow midi, pleated skirt or wide trousers. Short strips of red ribbon on the sleeves suggest her slashed puff sleeves, and a white detachable collar finishes the neckline. I cut that collar from white felt or cotton backed with interfacing, so it stands up the way hers does. Red flats or low block heels keep you comfortable. A short black bob wig, your own dark hair curled under, or longer hair in a low rolled bun all work, topped by a red bow headband. Red lipstick and rosy cheeks complete the face, and a faux apple is the obvious prop.
9. Easy Cinderella Costume

Cinderella can come from soft blue clothes and a little sparkle. Choose a pale-blue midi dress, a skater dress or a blue top with a flowing skirt, and drape a sheer blue scarf around the shoulders to suggest her ballgown sleeves. Silver flats, low heels or glittery trainers stay wearable all evening. Sweep hair into a high bun with a light-blue headband, adding a blonde bun piece or wig if you want a closer likeness. Cool-toned shadow, soft pink lipstick and a little highlighter suit her. A black ribbon choker and light gloves are small details I'd never skip, since they're cheap and very much hers. Carry one clear decorative shoe as a prop.
10. Easy Belle Costume

Belle’s yellow ballgown is the look most people picture, and a yellow dress gets you there. A yellow maxi or midi, or a yellow top with a full skirt, is the base. Drape a piece of sheer yellow fabric round the shoulders or waist to suggest the gown's layered shape; chiffon behaves better than organza here because it drapes instead of sticking out. Yellow flats, gold sandals or low block heels beat formal shoes. Brown hair goes into a half-up twist with loose curls, or use a medium-brown wavy wig, with a gold ribbon at the back. Warm neutral shadow, a rosy lip and gold studs finish her, plus an artificial red rose or a small book.
11. Easy Ariel Costume

Ariel works far better on land without a tail. Pair a fitted purple top with a long green skirt, flared green trousers or shiny green leggings; a fabric with a little texture or sheen hints at scales. Purple or green trainers, metallic flats or sandals keep you mobile. The long red wig in loose waves is what people look at first, so spend most of your budget there; cheap red fibre goes pinkish or orange, and a deeper red reads closer to hers. A shell clip holds one section off the face. Turquoise liner and a coral lip suit her, and a dinglehopper fork or faux shell is the classic prop. This version handles stairs and dancing.
12. Easy Jasmine Costume

Jasmine in aqua separates is lighter and easier than most princess outfits. Combine an aqua cropped blouse or fitted top with matching harem pants, wide-leg trousers or a flowing maxi skirt, and add a short sheer scarf at the waist for movement and a bit more coverage. Gold flats or simple sandals finish the base. Her bubble ponytail is made by placing aqua bands every few inches down a low ponytail and gently loosening the hair between them; it works on your own hair or a long black wig. A wide aqua headband with a faux blue jewel at the centre crowns it. Bold liner, bronze shadow, large gold earrings and a small lamp prop make her clear.
13. Easy Rapunzel Costume

Rapunzel is recognised by a lavender dress and a very long braid. Wear a purple or lavender midi with puff sleeves, or a lilac blouse with a darker purple skirt, and run pink ribbon in a crisscross pattern down the bodice with fashion tape. For the braid, I plait a long blonde extension in with your own hair or a wig, then tuck small artificial flowers in as you go, so each one is held by the plait rather than just pinned. Weigh it in your hand first; a heavy braid drags on the scalp by the second hour. Purple flats or low boots, pink blush, purple shadow and a few faux freckles finish her, with a paintbrush or plush chameleon.
14. Easy Elsa Costume

Elsa needs icy blue layers and very little else. Start with an icy-blue maxi dress, a long skirt and top, or a blue jumpsuit, and pin a sheer pale-blue scarf across the shoulders as a removable cape. Keep it off the ground; chiffon trails pick up dirt and catch under other people's feet. Silver flats, white boots or glittery trainers add the frost. Platinum hair goes in a thick side braid, with a wig or clip-in if needed, and a few soft strands pulled loose. Pale-blue shadow, pink lipstick and pearly highlighter finish her. Snowflake earrings and a sparkly clutch are easy extras, and any glitter should be cosmetic-grade and kept away from the eyes.
15. Easy Anna Costume

Anna’s layered travel outfit suits a cold October evening. A black fitted vest goes over a long-sleeve pale-blue blouse, with a royal-blue midi skirt, blue trousers or a skater skirt. Felt flowers on the vest are a nice touch if you have time, but her colours read without them. Black ankle boots and warm tights are practical for trick-or-treating. Two auburn plaits, from your own hair or a braided wig, are essential; a little white streak clipped near the front points to the first film. A magenta cape tied at the shoulders completes the shape. Natural blush, freckles and a berry-pink lip suit her, with a small canvas bag or a faux carrot for the snowman joke.
16. Easy Moana Costume

Moana is a breathable costume in earthy red, cream and tan. Layer a red patterned bandeau-style piece over a fitted cream tank top, then add a tan or cream midi skirt with a red sash at the waist. Flat brown sandals, tan slip-ons or trainers are reliable for walking. Long dark hair in natural waves or full curls suits her, or a textured dark wig, with a tropical flower behind one ear if you like. Bronzer, warm blush and a neutral lip keep it sunny. Her pendant can be painted air-dry clay on a cord; I seal the clay with varnish or it chips. A foam-board paddle is fun only if the venue has space; otherwise carry a woven bag.
17. Easy Tinker Bell Costume

Tinker Bell starts with a bright green mini or midi. A simple skater dress works, or layer pointed felt petals over an existing skirt; I cut the points from a folded strip so they repeat evenly and stitch the strip to a ribbon waistband. Nude tights add warmth and coverage. Green flats with pom-pom clips, or white trainers, keep you comfortable. Blonde hair goes into a high bun wrapped with green ribbon, or use a bun wig. Shimmery green shadow, pink blush and a touch of highlighter suit her. Translucent wings can be bought or made from wire-free fabric on elastic straps. Fill a small pouch with iridescent paper confetti instead of loose glitter.
18. Easy Alice In Wonderland Costume

Alice is a blue dress and a white apron, and both are easy to find or make. Wear a knee-length light-blue dress with short sleeves and layer a plain white apron over it. No apron? A white pillowcase opened along one side, with ribbon ties sewn or glued on, works well; cotton holds its shape better than polyester here. White tights or knee socks and black Mary Janes go below. Straight blonde hair with soft curled ends, or a shoulder-length wig, takes a black ribbon headband. Pink cheeks and defined lashes keep the face young. A teacup, white rabbit plush or card-print bag is the prop, and a blue cardigan adapts her for cold weather.
19. Easy Peter Pan Costume

Peter Pan can come from an oversized green T-shirt. Trim the hem into wide points, or leave it whole if you'd rather not cut. Knit jersey doesn't fray, so cut points stay clean without hemming, which is one of the few times I'd recommend cutting a costume straight from a T-shirt. Belt it in brown over green leggings, fitted trousers or opaque tights, with brown ankle boots or loafers. The pointed hat is felt, with a red feather on one side. Short hair can be tousled; longer hair tucks under the hat or into a low ponytail. Warm bronzer and a dusting of freckles suit him. A small pouch or a rolled paper map is a safe prop.
20. Easy Wendy Darling Costume

Wendy Darling’s look is a soft blue nightgown, so she's about as comfortable as storybook costumes get. Choose a modest pale-blue maxi, a loose midi or a long blue skirt with a puff-sleeve blouse, and tie a wide darker-blue ribbon round the waist. Black flats, blue slippers with real soles or low Mary Janes go on the feet. Brown hair goes into a low ponytail with big curls, or half-up with a blue satin bow at the back. Keep makeup natural. A storybook, a teddy bear or a thimble on a ribbon, for Peter's kiss, makes a sweet prop. A light-blue cardigan keeps her warm and still in character, which makes her good for school events.
21. Easy Cruella De Vil Costume

Cruella de Vil is dramatic even from basics. Wear a fitted black dress, black jumpsuit or black top with tailored trousers, and throw a white faux-fur scarf or spotted wrap around the shoulders. Red gloves, a red handbag and matching low heels or ankle boots give the contrast. The half-black, half-white bob wig matters most; I'd buy a split wig rather than spraying your own hair, because temporary white spray rarely looks even and comes off on everything you touch. Red lipstick, a sharp wing and strong brows make her a villain. A plush spotted puppy is a funnier prop than anything smoky, and faux pearls with big sunglasses finish her.
22. Easy Maleficent Costume

Maleficent is all black plus a horned headpiece, and the horns are the part worth getting right. Wear a long black dress, jumpsuit or fitted top with a flowing maxi skirt, and add a purple-lined cape or a purple scarf at the shoulders. Black ankle boots or pointed flats keep the line sleek. Tuck hair into a black hood and fix lightweight foam horns to a padded headband. Foam horns lean forward under their own weight, so I glue a wooden skewer or wire inside each and anchor the base to the band with plenty of glue. Gentle contour, purple shadow and a deep berry lip suit her. A raven brooch or small plush bird and a green ring finish her.
23. Easy Ursula Costume

Ursula can be done without a bulky tentacle suit. Layer a black strapless-style dress over a purple fitted top, or wear a black jumpsuit with a purple scarf at the neck. Curved purple felt panels attached around the waist suggest tentacles and leave your legs free; cut them long and narrow, with one edge stitched to a ribbon belt, so they swing as you walk. Black flats, purple boots or trainers are fine. White hair goes into a short swept-up shape with a wig or a teased bun. Purple shadow, bold liner, bright red lipstick and a beauty mark near the mouth are essential. Shell earrings and a gold shell necklace from painted craft material finish her.
24. Easy Kim Possible Costume

Kim Possible may be the comfiest option here. Pair a fitted black mock-neck or cropped long-sleeve top with loose olive cargo trousers, a brown utility belt and black combat boots or sturdy trainers. Long red hair goes straight with a side part, from a wig or temporary colour. Natural makeup with defined brows and peach blush suits her. Black fingerless gloves add the action feel and leave your hands free. Carry a grey cardboard Kimmunicator or a small grey crossbody bag. There's no sewing at all, it handles cold weather well, and real cargo pockets hold your phone and keys. Pick trousers with secure pockets so nothing falls out.
25. Easy Lilo Costume

Lilo is a red floral dress, and if you have a plain red one you can make the print. Cut leaf shapes from white felt and fix them with fabric tape, or, for a cotton dress, paint them on with white fabric paint, which stays flexible after it dries and washes well. Brown sandals, white trainers or red flats suit the weather. Long dark hair goes loose and straight, or a black wig with a centre part, with a white flower tucked behind one ear. Minimal makeup suits her. A small camera, a handmade record sleeve or a blue alien plush is the prop. Add a red cardigan or denim jacket if the evening turns cold.
26. Easy Stitch Costume

Stitch turns a blue hoodie into a cosy costume. Wear a bright-blue sweatshirt or zip hoodie with blue joggers or leggings, and add a pale-blue felt belly with darker blue patches on the back if you like. Blue trainers or slippers with outdoor soles keep it monochrome. The big blue-and-pink ears are what make him; cut them from felt with interfacing between two layers and stitch them to the hood at the base, so they stand out sideways instead of folding. Hair tucks into the hood or goes in plaits. Blue liner, pink blush and a dark-blue nose dot are plenty. Soft felt claws on gloves and a small red toy guitar finish him.
27. Easy Jessie Costume

Jessie is built from cowgirl staples. Start with a white button-down and add yellow felt across the shoulders and cuffs, then draw western lines with red ribbon or fabric marker. Blue jeans go below, with cow-print felt panels around the lower legs fixed with fabric tape for her chaps. I cut the cow spots freehand and keep them uneven; perfect circles look like Dalmatian print. Brown cowboy or ankle boots finish the feet. Red hair goes into a long plait under a wide red hat, tied off with yellow ribbon. Peach blush, scattered freckles and a bright pink lip suit her. A thick yarn lasso or a western-print bag is the prop.
28. Easy Woody Costume

Woody comes from a yellow plaid shirt and straight-leg jeans. Layer a cow-print vest over it, bought or made by attaching black felt patches to a plain white vest; I stitch the patches on with a running stitch near the edge so they don't curl. A red bandana at the neck and a wide brown belt follow, with brown cowboy, work or ankle boots. Short brown hair stays tousled or goes under a brown cowboy hat. Light bronzer and warm blush keep the face natural. A gold card sheriff's star pinned to the vest is the detail people look for. Carry a small backpack or satchel instead of anything shaped like a weapon.
29. Easy Bo Peep Costume

Bo Peep in her updated version is pastel blue and pink and easy to move in. Wear a pale-blue jumpsuit, blouse and trousers, or a blue dress, with a short pink cape. A wide pink sash at the waist and white fabric wrapped lightly round the forearms give her shape. Flat black or blue ankle boots go below. Blonde hair goes into a loose side braid or short waves under a big pink bow headband. Rosy blush, a pink lip and pearly shadow suit her. A curved cardboard-tube crook is fun in open spaces, though I'd use a small plush sheep in crowds. White gloves and a blue wrist cuff finish her.
30. Easy Edna Mode Costume

Edna Mode is a structured black outfit and enormous round glasses. Choose a black tunic dress, an architectural shift or a long black top with cropped black trousers, plus opaque tights and black loafers, platforms or low boots. The blunt black bob with short bangs needs to sit smooth and rounded at the jaw, so I trim the wig bangs straight across with sharp scissors while it's on a head form, not on my head. The glasses must have clear lenses so you can see. Defined brows, matte skin and a neutral lip give her that designer look. A sketchbook or a measuring tape round the neck is the right prop for a fellow sewist.
31. Easy Joy Costume

Joy is sunny and quick, which suits last-minute dressing. Start with a sleeveless yellow skater dress, or a yellow top with a matching knee-length skirt, and add small blue starbursts with felt or fabric tape. Yellow flats or blue trainers finish the feet. A short blue pixie wig is the easiest way to her hair; washable blue colour on light hair can stain, so I'd only use it on dark hair. Blue liner, rosy blush and glossy pink lips keep her bright. A memory ball made from a clear plastic ornament filled with yellow tissue paper is a clever prop, and battery tea lights inside make it glow. Blue studs tie the colour together.
32. Easy Sadness Costume

Sadness is soft, warm and a good choice for a chilly evening. Wear an oversized pale-grey or light-blue turtleneck jumper with navy trousers, leggings or a knee-length skirt, plus blue flats, grey loafers or navy trainers. A short blue bob with side-swept bangs comes from a wig or washable blue styling wax. The big round glasses are her face, so choose light frames with clear lenses. Cool blue shadow, a pale pink lip and gentle blush stand in for full blue face paint, which I'd avoid under a turtleneck because it rubs off on the collar. A blue memory ball and a small book suit her. Blue gloves keep your hands warm.
33. Easy Mike Wazowski Costume

Mike Wazowski is one bright green outfit and a big felt eye. Wear a lime-green T-shirt, sweatshirt or tunic with matching leggings, joggers or trousers. Cut a large white circle, a smaller blue circle and a black centre from felt, then stack and attach them to the front of the shirt, with a curved black smile below. Glue the layers to each other first, then stitch the whole eye to the shirt round the outer edge, because a big glued patch peels when the shirt stretches. Green trainers or black slip-ons work. A green beanie with two small soft horns hides your hair. Carry a clipboard or a small door-shaped bag.
34. Easy Sulley Costume

Sulley gets his look from a teal outfit with purple spots, not a heavy fur suit. Start with a turquoise hoodie, fuzzy jumper or fleece top and matching joggers or leggings, then fix irregular purple felt spots across the front, sleeves and legs. Fleece is a good choice here: it's warm, it doesn't fray, and felt sticks to it better than to slick jersey. Turquoise trainers or neutral boots go below. Small cream horns and blue ears from soft felt are fixed firmly to the hood or a headband. Blue liner, purple shadow, pink cheeks and a turquoise nose dot suit him. Soft gloves and a cardboard door bag finish him, and it's warm enough for trick-or-treating on a cold night.
35. Easy Vanellope Von Schweetz Costume

Vanellope is colourful casual clothes with a little sweetness. Wear a mint-green hoodie with a brown skirt, brown shorts over leggings or chocolate-coloured trousers, and add mismatched striped tights in white, turquoise and purple. Black trainers or brown lace-up boots handle an active night. Dark hair goes into a high ponytail with a red hair tie, dotted with candy-coloured clips, beads or light foam sprinkles; I glue the sprinkles onto bobby pins so they come out in seconds. Pink blush and a berry balm keep the face young. Red ribbon drawstrings along the hoodie pocket are a nice detail, and a cardboard racing medal makes a good prop.
Ears and Horns That Sit Level All Night
A dozen characters on this list depend on a headband: Mickey and Minnie, Pooh, Tigger, Goofy, Stitch, Maleficent, Sulley. Most headband pieces fail the same way, by tipping forward or sliding back.
- Choose a wide, padded headband with teeth on the inside. Thin plastic bands pinch behind the ears and start to hurt after an hour.
- Keep the weight low and centred. Big ears or horns should be as light as possible, with any stiffening wire or skewer inside them rather than glue piled on the outside.
- Wrap the join between the ear and the band with a strip of felt or ribbon and glue it down. That hides the glue and stops the ear twisting.
- Pin the band to your hair or wig with two bobby pins crossed behind each ear. It makes a bigger difference than any glue.
Adapting a Princess Dress for Trick-or-Treating
Long skirts, sheer capes and flats are lovely at a party and less so on dark pavements. For the princess looks especially, a few changes make them practical outdoors.
- Hem or pin the skirt so it clears the ground by a few centimetres when wearing your actual shoes. Kids trip on their own hems more than anything else.
- Swap glittery flats for trainers in a matching colour. Nobody notices under a long skirt.
- Add a cardigan, leggings or thermal layer in the character's colour, like blue for Cinderella or Elsa and yellow for Belle, so the costume still reads when it's cold.
- Put a strip of reflective tape on the back of the skirt or bag, and carry a small torch. Light colours help, but they don't replace being seen by drivers.
- Choose capes that tie with a quick-release fastening or hook-and-loop tape rather than a tight knot at the throat.
Which Character Is Already Hanging in Your Wardrobe?
A memorable Disney look rarely needs advanced sewing, expensive clothes or uncomfortable accessories. Get the character's main colours and silhouette right first, then add the hair, makeup, shoes and one safe prop. Felt, ribbon, headbands, thrifted separates and removable fabric tape can change ordinary clothes without ruining them. Choose flat shoes and breathable layers if you'll be walking or outside. Skirts swap for trousers, dresses for jumpsuits and wigs for temporary colour without losing the character. With a little planning, any of these works for a party, a school day, trick-or-treating or a family dress-up night.
