Blonde hair gives you a head start on a surprising number of characters, from fairytale princesses to pop stars and anime heroines. Platinum, honey, ash or strawberry all work, and so does a wig if your own hair is darker. I've put together forty costumes below. Each covers the clothes, the hairstyle, makeup, a prop and shoes you can actually walk in, and most come from closet basics, thrift finds and a little craft foam. Match the character to your hair length first, because that saves the most work.

Going Blonde for One Night Over Dark Hair
Plenty of people who pick from this list aren't blonde at all, and a blonde wig over dark hair has two tells: dark hair peeking out at the hairline, and dark brows that suddenly look severe. Both are easy to fix if you plan for them.
- Flatten your own hair first. Braid it into flat sections or pin curls, then pull on a wig cap in a light or nude shade rather than black, because a dark cap shows through the parting of a blonde wig.
- Set the wig a touch lower on the forehead than feels natural and check the hairline from the side with a hand mirror. Tuck stray dark hairs at the nape and temples under the cap with a bobby pin.
- Soften the brows. A tinted brow gel a shade or two lighter keeps dark brows from fighting a platinum wig.
- Match the tone to your skin. Golden and honey shades tend to suit warm skin; ash and platinum suit cooler skin and can make warm skin look tired unless you add more blush.
Blonde synthetic wigs show makeup and grime far more than dark ones. I do the face and powder it before the wig goes on, and keep foundation away from the hairline, because a beige smudge on pale fibres is very hard to wash out.
1. Barbie Pink Cowgirl Costume

The pink cowgirl Barbie is mostly a matter of finding the right pink. Look for a fitted pink vest with matching flare pants, or a comfortable pink jumpsuit, and keep every pink in the same family; a hot pink vest next to bubblegum flares looks thrown together. White Western boots, a matching neck scarf and a lightweight cowgirl hat do the rest. Loose waves in natural blonde hair are fine, though a long platinum wig gives the doll finish. Rosy blush, glossy pink lips, soft lashes and a little shimmer at the eyes, then star earrings and a small pink belt bag. For warmth, a white long-sleeve top under the vest keeps the outline.
2. Elle Woods Pink Suit Costume

Elle Woods works from a bright pink skirt suit, a fitted pink dress or a pink blazer with trousers. I'd go for the suit if you can find one, because the matched jacket and skirt is the image people remember. Wear a silky camisole underneath, with pink pumps, ballet flats or block heels. Blow the hair out smooth and curl just the ends under. Pink blush, neutral shadow, mascara and gloss. The handbag is where the character lives: a structured bag holding a fluffy pink pen, a notebook, big sunglasses and a small stuffed dog peeking out of the top. Add pearl studs and you're done, mostly from clothes you may already own.
3. Cinderella Blue Gown Costume

Cinderella's pale blue lets golden hair shine. A full-length gown is the classic, though a midi party dress or a tulle skirt with a fitted blue top reads the same at a party. Add sheer gloves, a narrow black choker, sparkly earrings and a silver headband. The high bun should be smooth with a few curled pieces at the face; I set those face-framing curls last, after the headband goes on, or it flattens them. Icy shadow, rosy cheeks, mascara and soft pink lips. Clear flats or glittery ballet shoes give you the glass slipper without the blisters, and a clock-shaped purse or small pumpkin bag is the prop.
4. Glinda Pink Witch Costume

Glinda is about sparkle without weight. Choose a pale pink gown, a layered tulle skirt or a flowing maxi dress, and decorate it with removable silver stars so the dress survives for another use. Add a sheer cape, silver ballet flats and a tall crown cut from glitter card. I line the inside of the crown with a strip of felt so the card edge doesn't scratch your forehead. Soft brushed curls, with the front pinned back neatly. Pearl shadow, rosy blush, a touch of highlight and glossy pink lips, plus a star-topped wand from cardboard and a painted dowel. Skip heavy costume satin if you'll be dancing, and slip a thin thermal underneath on a cold night.
5. Tinker Bell Green Fairy Costume

Tinker Bell starts with a sleeveless green dress, or a fitted top tucked into a layered skirt cut in leaf points. Attach lightweight translucent wings to comfortable shoulder straps. The green ballet flats with white pom-poms are the detail I wouldn't skip, and I stitch the pom-poms through the toe, because hot glue on a flexing shoe tends to let go. Sweep the hair into a high bun tied with green ribbon; if your hair is short, a clip-on blonde bun gets you her shape in seconds. Golden shadow, rosy cheeks, mascara and a bit of biodegradable shimmer. Carry a tiny lantern or a flower purse rather than loose glitter, and add skin-tone tights and a cropped green cardigan for cold weather.
6. Alice Blue Dress Costume

Alice is a powder-blue fit-and-flare dress over a crisp white blouse, or with a white collar added. Tie a clean white apron over it, then white tights and black Mary Janes. The wide black headband is what turns a blue dress into Alice, so make it a proper wide one rather than a thin band. Straight or softly curled hair. Fresh skin, peach blush, a little mascara and pink balm. Carry a plush white rabbit, an oversized cardboard pocket watch or a teacup bag, and a pale blue cardigan keeps you warm on palette. Everything here can be worn again after Halloween, which I always count in its favour.
7. Goldilocks Storybook Costume

Goldilocks lives on curls, so set them properly. I use foam rollers on slightly damp hair or a wand on dry hair, then separate them with fingers only, which keeps the ringlets soft rather than frizzy. Wear a yellow, blue or gingham puff-sleeve dress with a white apron and lace-trimmed socks, plus brown Mary Janes or sturdy flats. Tie a ribbon at the crown or make two low ponytails. Warm blush and freckles dotted on with a brow pencil. The basket tells the story, so fill it with three toy bowls or three small plush bears. Cream tights and a cardigan cover cold evenings, and any age can wear it.
8. Rapunzel Purple Princess Costume

The braid is the work in a Rapunzel costume. Long blonde hair goes into a loose braid with silk flowers and pastel ribbons tucked in as you go, not after; I slide the flower stems under the crossovers so they don't fall out. Short hair needs an extra-long braided wig pinned firmly at the crown. The dress is a lavender corset-style top over a modest blouse with a long purple skirt, or a full purple dress with ribbon trim, with ballet flats under the hem. Fresh pink makeup, light freckles and a touch of lavender shadow. Carry a foam frying pan or a plush chameleon, and add a purple cardigan for warmth.
9. Elsa Ice Queen Costume

Elsa's dress should stretch. A shimmering blue maxi with some give, a sequined cape and silver shoes are the core, with pale tights underneath if it's cold. Platinum or ash hair goes into a loose side braid; I pancake it by pulling the edges of each section outward, then ease a few soft pieces out at the face. Icy blue shadow, defined lashes, cool pink blush and a berry lip. Snowflake earrings, a rhinestone pin and a glittery clutch. I'd use sequined fabric or reusable snowflake appliques for sparkle, never loose craft glitter, which ends up everywhere. For a casual version, a blue sweater and flowing skirt carry the same idea.
10. Daenerys Targaryen Blue Dress Costume

For a fan-made Daenerys, the platinum hair is non-negotiable, so if your blonde runs golden, use a wig. Style it in loose waves with several narrow braids pulled back from the temples and pinned together at the back of the head. The clothing is a long slate-blue dress, a textured shoulder wrap and a wide metallic belt, with flat brown boots and a soft grey cape for outdoor plans. Matte skin, neutral shadow, strong brows and muted pink lips. Carry a plush dragon or a dragon-egg purse, never anything sharp. I make the shoulder wrap from chunky knit or faux-fur scraps, which gives texture in photos, and silver cuffs with braided cord add more.
11. Harley Quinn Red And Blue Costume

Harley Quinn can be playful without heavy props. Wear a colour-block jacket with matching shorts over opaque tights, or red and blue leggings with a graphic top, plus lace-up ankle boots or high-tops. Split blonde hair into two high pigtails and colour the ends pink and blue with temporary colour. On light blonde it shows bright in a single pass, so go gently (more on that further down). Matching eyeshadow, a small heart on one cheek and red lips. Fingerless gloves, a studded belt and oversized cardboard playing cards. Keep the clothes colour-coordinated and it stays fun and family-friendly.
12. Sandy Black Jumpsuit Costume

Sandy's final look is all in the curls. Set big curls, then gather the top section into a high, slightly messy pouf and pin it, leaving the rest bouncing at the shoulders. The outfit is a black off-the-shoulder top with fitted black pants, or an all-in-one jumpsuit, with a cropped faux-leather jacket and a wide belt. Red block heels or black ankle boots. Winged liner, warm blush, defined lashes and bright red lipstick, with small hoops and a vintage clutch. If tight pants aren't for you, a black midi skirt with the same top keeps the shape. There's no crafting at all, which makes it an easy party choice.
13. Cher Horowitz Yellow Plaid Costume

Cher Horowitz is a yellow plaid blazer with a matching pleated skirt, and finding a true match is the challenge. If you can't, combine a yellow cardigan with a plaid skirt in similar tones; I pick the skirt first and match the knit to its brightest yellow. Layer it over a white top or sweater vest, then white knee socks and black Mary Janes. Hair long, straight and smooth with a centre part. Peach blush, neutral shadow, mascara and nude-pink gloss. A small fuzzy backpack, a flip phone or a planner. It's easy to move in, and the separates go back into the closet afterwards.
14. Regina George Bunny Costume

Regina George's party look is a black sleeveless dress or fitted jumpsuit over opaque tights, simple black bunny ears and a detachable white collar with cuffs. I'd buy ears on a padded band, since thin metal ones press behind the ears within an hour. Black pumps, loafers or ankle boots depending on the event. A sleek blowout with a smooth side part. Soft contour, rosy blush, black mascara and glossy pink lips. A small black handbag and a faux jewelled initial necklace. For more coverage, wear a fitted long-sleeve top under the dress. Nothing about it is complicated, which is rather the point of her.
15. Karen Smith Mouse Costume

Karen's mouse is one of the quickest last-minute costumes here. Start with a grey mini, midi or sweater dress over tights, with a grey cardigan if you want warmth. For the ears, I cut two felt circles, glue smaller pink circles inside and back each with a thin piece of card so they stand up instead of flopping forward, then glue them to a plain headband. Hair stays loose in waves or a straight blowout. Sweet pink makeup, a tiny grey nose and simple whiskers in face-safe makeup. Grey flats or sneakers. A wedge-of-cheese purse in yellow felt makes the joke land.
16. Bubbles Blue Superhero Costume

Bubbles is a bright blue skater dress with a bold black waistband, white knee socks and black Mary Janes, plus a short cape if you like movement. The two pigtails need to sit high and even, so I part them with the tail of a comb and check from behind with a hand mirror. Short hair can take clip-in ponytails instead of a full wig. Pale blue shadow, rosy cheeks, defined lashes and pink gloss. A plush octopus is her accessory, and a blue cardigan keeps the palette if you need warmth. It's easy to dance in, and three friends can split the trio between them.
17. Sailor Moon Uniform Costume

Sailor Moon depends on the buns and long tails, and they're heavier than they look. You need two high buns with a long ponytail hanging from each, using clip-in extensions if your hair is short. I build each bun around a small donut and clip the extension in underneath, so the weight sits on the base rather than dragging at your scalp. The uniform is a white sailor top with a blue collar, a pleated blue skirt, a red chest bow and red boots or boot covers, with elbow-length white gloves and a flexible foam tiara. Pink blush, winged liner, mascara and a soft rose lip. A moon purse or a soft wand, and a white bodysuit with opaque tights underneath for coverage.
18. Supergirl Blue And Red Costume

A practical Supergirl is a long-sleeve blue dress, or a blue top with a skater skirt, with a red cape at the shoulders and a wide gold belt. Red boots or sneakers. Glossy waves with the front swept back off the face. Neutral shadow, pink blush, mascara and classic red lips. I cut the chest emblem from thin craft foam and attach it with removable fashion tape; thick foam won't sit flat on a curved chest and the edges lift. Opaque blue tights and a thermal underneath handle cooler nights. The coverage is comfortable and the pieces adjust easily across sizes.
19. Sabrina Spellman Red Dress Costume

Classic Sabrina is a long-sleeve red dress with a white Peter Pan collar and black tights. If your dress has no collar, a detachable cotton or lace collar pinned inside the neckline does the job. Black loafers or ankle boots. Soft waves held back with a black velvet headband. Subtle liner, warm blush and a berry lip, neat and slightly vintage. Carry old-looking schoolbooks, a small black cat plush or a satchel, and add a black cape or fitted coat for cold evenings. I'd skip the pointed hat entirely; the red-and-black wardrobe and the headband say Sabrina on their own.
20. Sarah Sanderson Purple Witch Costume

Sarah Sanderson needs soft layers that move. Start with a plum or dusty purple long-sleeve dress, a burgundy lace-up vest and a patchwork skirt overlay. I make the overlay from scraps of three or four purple and rose fabrics, torn rather than cut so the edges look worn. Brown lace-up boots for walking. Long, tousled waves with narrow braids at the temples. Lavender shadow, rosy blush, mascara and muted berry lips. Mismatched rings, layered necklaces and a light broom, plus a purple velvet cape for warmth. Keep the face pretty rather than frightening and it suits neighbourhood events.
21. Luna Lovegood School Costume

Luna suits long, pale blonde hair left in its natural wave, so don't over-style it. Wear a white button-down, a striped tie, a dark pleated skirt and a grey cardigan or school robe, with knee socks and sturdy loafers; dark trousers under the robe work just as well. Minimal makeup, just light blush, mascara and tinted balm. The accessories make her: handmade colourful glasses, radish earrings made from felt or polymer clay, and a cork necklace. Carry an odd magazine cover or a small schoolbook. Of every costume here, this is the one where handmade, slightly odd details beat anything bought.
22. Princess Peach Pink Gown Costume

Princess Peach starts with a bright pink ball gown or layered tulle dress with puff sleeves, a fitted waist and darker pink panels at the hips. Add white elbow gloves, blue jewellery and a gold foam crown. I seal foam crowns with a primer coat before painting, because bare foam soaks up gold paint and looks blotchy. Long soft curls with side-swept bangs, or a clip-in fringe. Pink blush, blue shadow, mascara and rosy lips. Pink flats or block heels and a star-shaped purse. For a simpler build, a pink blouse with a full skirt keeps the silhouette.
23. Princess Zelda Purple Gown Costume

Zelda layers a lavender or purple maxi dress under a white apron panel. I cut the panel from white felt and add the gold trim with fabric glue, so nothing needs hemming. Then a structured belt, pointed foam ear cuffs and a delicate gold crown. Hair goes half-up with small side braids and the rest falling smooth. Luminous skin, soft purple shadow, defined brows and a rose lip. Brown or gold flat boots hide under the dress. Carry a blue gem purse or a decorative book rather than battle gear, and add a cloak for outdoors. It looks detailed in photos but comes from a formal dress and a bit of felt.
24. Rosalina Turquoise Princess Costume

Rosalina's long side fringe is the tricky part. Make a deep side part, sweep a long section across the forehead and pin it behind the ear on the far side, so it frames the face without falling into your eye. The gown is pale turquoise with long sleeves, silver star appliques, a jewelled brooch and a light silver crown. Pearl shadow, long lashes, cool blush and pale pink lips. Silver flats or low block heels and a plush star. If a gown feels too formal, a turquoise blouse with a flowing maxi skirt and a cape gets very close.
25. Samus Orange Space Suit Costume

Samus is the costume for someone tired of princesses. Start with an orange utility jumpsuit, then add red and gold foam armour at the shoulders, chest, knees and boots. I heat-shape EVA foam with a heat gun so the shoulder pieces curve over the joint, then seal and paint it; thin craft foam won't hold that curve. Keep every piece flexible, and check you can raise your arms and sit down. Hair in a high ponytail or a sleek shoulder-length style. Clean makeup with defined brows and a neutral lip. Red sneakers under foam boot covers, and a tinted visor headband or a painted cardboard scanner. Nothing sharp, nothing heavy.
26. Android 18 Denim Costume

Android 18 is built from everyday clothes: a black-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt under a blue denim vest, with a denim skirt or straight jeans, black tights and brown boots. The chin-length bob with a side part is what makes it her, so a wig is worth it if your hair is longer; turn the ends under slightly so it swings rather than flips. Sharp liner, cool blush and muted pink lips. Small gold hoops, a simple belt and a capsule-shaped bag. Layered denim is warm, which makes this one of the better choices for a cold night outdoors.
27. Lucy Heartfilia Blue Skirt Costume

Lucy Heartfilia is a sleeveless white top trimmed in blue with a bright blue pleated skirt, a brown belt hung with key charms, black knee boots and a blue wrist cuff. The ponytail ties high on one side with a blue ribbon. Golden shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and glossy pink lips. I make the oversized keys from two layers of cardboard glued together so they don't bend, paint them gold and tie them on with cord through a punched hole. A fitted white top underneath and opaque tights add coverage. It also slots easily into an anime group.
28. Violet Evergarden Blue Uniform Costume

Violet Evergarden is all tailoring. Wear a royal blue fitted jacket over a cream high-neck blouse and a long white skirt, with a brown waist belt, dark boots and white gloves. The jacket has to fit at the shoulders. I'd rather buy a plain blue blazer that fits and add gold braid with removable fabric tape than wear a loose costume jacket. Hair in a low bun with loose side sections and red ribbon ties. Matte skin, soft brown liner, peach blush and a rose lip. Carry cream envelopes, a vintage notebook or a small brown suitcase. Warm and fully covered, it suits cool weather.
29. Sharpay Evans Pink Sequin Costume

Sharpay is theatre, pink and sequins. Build it around a pink sequined dress, a sparkly jacket or a metallic two-piece set. Sequins scratch the inner arm over a long night, so I line the armholes of any sleeveless sequin top or wear a thin layer under it. Silver heels or glittery flats, depending on your feet. Bouncy curls with a rhinestone barrette or a tiny tiara. Shimmer shadow, defined lashes, bright blush and glossy pink lips. A foam star microphone and a small pink bag, and faux-fur trim on the jacket if you want more drama. You can dance in all of it.
30. Hannah Montana Pop Star Costume

Hannah Montana is long straight blonde hair with full bangs, so most people will need a wig, and a straight style with a fringe is easy to find in that shade. Pair a sequined vest or metallic jacket with a bright tank top and flared jeans or a tiered skirt over leggings. Sparkly boots, a wide belt and stacked bangles. Silver shadow, pink blush, mascara and shiny lips. A toy microphone or a headset bent from craft wire and foam, plus a backstage-style pass clipped to the belt. I'd thrift the whole outfit, since clothes from that era turn up second-hand often.
31. Britney Spears School Uniform Costume

The school-uniform music video look is a white button-down, grey cardigan, black pleated skirt and knee socks, with a tidy black tie. Black loafers or Mary Janes, not heels. Two high braided pigtails tied with soft ribbons; I braid them slightly loose and tug the edges out, because tight braids look thin in photos. Neutral shadow, rosy blush, mascara and tinted gloss. A notebook, pencil case or vintage backpack. A longer skirt with opaque tights gives more coverage and keeps the palette. Familiar basics make it cheap to put together.
32. Dolly Parton Country Singer Costume

Dolly Parton is volume, so give the hair time. Set large curls with rollers, let them cool completely, then back-comb at the roots and smooth the top layer over; a high-volume wig is the faster path. The outfit is a rhinestone-trimmed Western shirt with flare pants or a fringed midi skirt, white or silver cowgirl boots, statement earrings and a wide embellished belt. Defined lashes, bright blush, shimmery lids and glossy rose lips. Carry a glittery toy microphone or a guitar purse, and bring a fringed jacket for cold weather. Aim for joyful and polished, not a caricature.
33. Marilyn Monroe White Dress Costume

The white halter dress is the Marilyn people expect. Pick one that's lined, with a secure neckline and a full pleated skirt, and check the halter strap: a thin one digs into the back of the neck after an hour, so a wider strap is kinder. White or silver block heels. Short blonde hair set in structured vintage curls, or a chin-length platinum wig with a soft side part. Winged liner, shaped brows, peach blush and red lips. Pearl earrings, a faux-fur wrap and a metallic clutch. Skip the windblown pose and stand tall, and keep a white cardigan handy for warmth.
34. Taylor Swift Sparkly Stage Costume

A Taylor Swift-inspired stage look works from a sequined mini dress, a sparkly romper or a rhinestone top with high-waisted shorts and opaque tights. Glittery ankle boots, flat ones if you'll be standing for hours, and a removable headset mic. Soft waves with full bangs, or a smooth bob. Black winged liner, glowing skin and bold red lips. Stacked friendship bracelets are the easy fan detail, and I'd make a few extra to swap. A light glittery guitar prop. Pick one performance colour and keep the shimmer consistent from head to toe.
35. Lady Gaga Silver Pop Star Costume

A Lady Gaga-inspired look is structured silver: a silver dress, a metallic jumpsuit or a reflective top with silver leggings. Platform boots with manageable heels, and geometric accessories cut from foam. Platinum hair can go into a blunt bob, a long straight wig or the famous hair bow. I build the bow by folding a high ponytail over itself and splitting it into two loops pinned at the centre, which only works on long, thick hair. Silver shadow, graphic black liner, highlighted cheeks and pale pink lips. Mirrored sunglasses and a silver mic. Avoid anything that blocks your view or stops you sitting down.
36. Astrid Viking Costume

Astrid is layered and practical. A teal tunic over dark leggings or slim brown pants, a faux-fur shoulder wrap, a wide brown belt, textured skirt panels and sturdy brown boots. The braiding is her signature: a loose side braid with smaller braids woven round the crown. I braid and pin the crown pieces first, then sweep everything into the side braid, so the small ones stay neat. Natural makeup, warm blush and a muted berry lip. Leather-look wrist cuffs and a plush dragon, no weapons. A thermal hidden under the tunic keeps you warm outdoors.
37. Blonde Disco Queen Costume

The disco queen isn't a specific character, so it's easy to make your own. Choose a silver sequined jumpsuit, metallic flares with a sparkly top, or a glittery long-sleeve mini over tights. White platform boots with stable soles and oversized star earrings. Big brushed-out curls or a high-volume blowout; on fine blonde hair I add root-lift spray before drying, or the volume collapses within the hour. Shimmer shadow, graphic liner, glowing blush and nude gloss. A mirror-ball purse or a silver belt, and a cropped white faux-fur jacket that keeps you warm and fits the era.
38. Blonde Space Explorer Costume

A space explorer is quickest to build from a white painter's coverall or a basic jumpsuit, with silver belt details and mission patches. Sew or pin the patches on, because many disposable coveralls melt under an iron. White high-tops or moon-boot-style footwear you can walk in. Hair in a high ponytail, a bubble braid or a sleek low bun. Silver liner, cool pink blush, glossy lips and tiny face-safe stars at the temples. Carry a light helmet under one arm or a painted cardboard control tablet. Silver gloves and a compact belt bag finish the kit.
39. Blonde Sunflower Fairy Costume

A sunflower fairy plays up honey-blonde hair with warm yellow and green. Wear a yellow corset-style top or blouse, a layered green tulle skirt and a belt of fabric leaves, with golden translucent wings, green ballet flats and floral wrist cuffs. Loose waves or a crown braid studded with small silk sunflowers; I snip the flower heads off their stems and secure them with bobby pins pushed through the back. Gold shadow, peach blush, light freckles and coral gloss. A flower bag or a light watering can. Skin-tone or green tights for evening warmth.
40. Platinum Blonde Ice Fairy Costume

The ice fairy rounds out the list with a pale blue dress and a sheer sparkly cape. Silver tights, crystal-style ballet flats and translucent wings decorated with reusable snowflake appliques. Light blonde hair in a braided crown or long loose waves with silver clips. Frosty makeup: pearl shadow, white liner on the lower lash line, cool pink blush and glossy mauve lips. A foam snowflake wand or a clear star purse. Wear a fitted thermal under the dress if it's cold. Pale colours wash out under harsh indoor light, so I'd add a little more blush than feels natural.
Pink and Blue Ends Without a Week of Stains
Light hair takes temporary colour very differently from dark hair. It grabs pigment fast, sometimes too well. Bleached and platinum hair is porous, so a pink spray or chalk meant to rinse out can leave a tint that hangs on for several washes.
- Strand test first. Colour a small hidden section underneath and wash it out the same evening before you commit to a pair of Harley Quinn pigtails.
- Coat the ends with a light leave-in conditioner or a drop of hair oil before colouring, which puts a barrier between the pigment and the hair.
- Clip-in coloured extensions are the safe route for very pale or freshly bleached hair. They hang alongside your own and leave nothing behind.
- Wash out with a clarifying shampoo. If a faint pink stays, a second wash the next morning usually lifts most of it.
Buns, Pigtails and Crowns That Last Until Midnight
Sailor Moon, Bubbles, Tinker Bell and Astrid all rely on hair that has to stay up for hours. Freshly washed blonde hair is often too silky to hold pins, so I work in dry shampoo or a texture spray first to give the grips something to bite. Anchor every bun with an elastic at the base before pinning, then push the grips in towards the elastic so they lock against it.
For anything heavy, such as extensions or a crown, add a second anchor point. One tight spot on the scalp starts to ache long before the party ends, and a headache is the fastest way to end up pulling the whole style out.
Colour, Hair and One Prop Carry Every Character
Your hair is part of the costume, so style it on purpose rather than as an afterthought. Every look on this list comes down to a few identifying details: the main colours, the hairstyle, the makeup, one prop and the shoes. You don't need a replica of every garment. Closet pieces in the right colours and a couple of handmade accessories say the character clearly. I'd put comfortable shoes and well-pinned hair at the top of the list, then lightweight props and layers you can breathe in, and you'll still be comfortable when the party winds down.
