Tiana gives you more than one dress to work from. There's the green lily-pad gown everyone pictures, but also the yellow waitress uniform, the borrowed blue ball gown, the white dream dress and plenty of looks rooted in her 1920s New Orleans life. What makes any of them read as Tiana is the same short list: her green or yellow palette, a neat high bun, warm natural makeup, a frog or a flower somewhere on you, and shoes you can stand in. I build every version around clothing, hair and props, never around changing anyone's skin tone or features; she's recognizable from the costume alone. The ideas below cover adults, teens, kids, plus-size and maternity wearers, from closet-built outfits to full gowns.

Which of Tiana's Dresses Are You Making?
Tiana wears several distinct outfits in her film, and each one asks for different pieces. Deciding which you're making before you buy anything saves a lot of half-finished costumes.
- The yellow waitress uniform: the easiest build. A yellow dress, white apron and low bun, and most people recognize her from the beignet tray.
- The blue ball gown: the one she wears to the masquerade, with a tiara and long gloves. It suits a formal party, but blue alone can be mistaken for Cinderella, so the frog matters here.
- The green lily gown: the signature look. The petal skirt is where the work goes, and it's the one I'd sew if you have time.
- The white dream dress: a 1920s evening gown with a stole, ideal for a vintage or Gatsby theme where a princess gown would look odd.
My rule is to match the dress to where you're going. A diner uniform at a formal party looks like a joke, and a full gown at a trick-or-treat walk turns into a chore by the third house.
1. Green Lily Pad Princess Tiana Costume

The lily-pad gown is the one people expect, so I spend the effort on the skirt. Start with a strapless light green ball gown with a fitted bodice and a layered, petal-shaped skirt, then add darker green leaf panels at the waist so it looks like a water lily opening. A pale green opera glove on each arm and a delicate floral necklace finish the top half. Smooth your hair into a high bun with a small leaf-shaped tiara. Soft gold eyeshadow, rosy blush and berry lips are enough; anything heavier competes with the dress. A plush frog or a white artificial flower is the prop, and green block heels or embellished ballet flats keep you upright on a long night.
2. Princess Tiana Wedding Costume

Her wedding look is the most romantic of the set. Choose a pale green gown with a sweetheart neckline, a fitted waist and a full layered skirt, and use organza or tulle petals to get that floating lily effect. Sheer elbow-length gloves and a green floral necklace add detail. The veil is the tricky part: pin it behind the leafy tiara through the bun itself, not just the hair around it, or it drags the tiara backward as you move. Luminous skin, champagne shadow, softly defined lashes, peach blush and muted rose lipstick suit it. Carry a white lily bouquet or a small frog plush, and wear pale green pumps or low jeweled flats.
3. Blue Ball Gown Princess Tiana Costume

The blue gown is the one Tiana wears to the masquerade ball, so it's a real alternative rather than a fan invention. Look for a strapless powder-blue ball gown with a structured bodice and a full skirt, and if it's satin, add a layer of blue tulle on top for movement and a little shimmer. Long blue gloves, a simple blue gemstone necklace, a sleek bun and a small silver tiara carry the formal look. Cool-toned eye makeup, soft liner, pink blush and glossy rose lips match the color. A light blue folding fan is a graceful prop. Silver flats or low blue heels stay hidden under the hem, and I'd always pick the flats if there's dancing.
4. Yellow Waitress Princess Tiana Costume

The waitress uniform is my favorite practical Tiana, because fans of the film know it straight away and it's easy to walk in. Wear a short-sleeve pale yellow dress with a modest collar and a knee-length skirt, then tie a crisp white apron over the front and add a small white headband or folded cap. A tidy low bun makes it look work-ready. Neutral shadow, mascara, warm blush and pinkish-brown lipstick keep the face fresh. The serving tray is what sells the character, so load it with lightweight felt or foam beignets rather than anything real that will slide off. Black block-heel pumps, Mary Janes or nonslip flats finish it.
5. White Dream Dress Princess Tiana Costume

Her white dream dress suits anyone who loves vintage evening wear. Begin with a fitted white or ivory 1920s-style dress with fringe, beads or soft feather-like trim, and drape a faux-fur stole or light white wrap over the shoulders. A smooth low bun with a crystal comb or jeweled headband suits the era better than a tiara. Silver shadow, defined lashes, warm blush and deep rose lipstick, then long ivory gloves and a rhinestone necklace. White shows every mark, so I keep makeup wipes in the clutch and put the dress on after the face is done. A small silver clutch or a menu inspired by her restaurant dream is the prop, and white T-strap heels or silver dance shoes let you move.
6. Bayou Adventure Princess Tiana Costume

This bayou version swaps the gown for something you could actually walk through a swamp in. Wear saffron-green trousers with a tucked-in yellow blouse dotted with small embroidered flowers, then layer a structured olive jacket and fasten a brown belt at the waist. Brown gaiters over sturdy lace-up ankle boots give it an outdoor finish, and a patterned scarf at the neck plus a straw cloche hat over a low bun complete the shape. Natural makeup with warm gold shadow, soft blush and a satin berry lip holds up outside. Carry a woven basket, a map or a small lantern-style prop. With a jacket and trousers built in, it's the version I'd suggest for a cold Halloween.
7. Green Restaurant Owner Princess Tiana Costume

Tiana's restaurant-owner era calls for something refined. Pick a fitted sage or emerald midi dress with short sleeves, a defined waist and a gently flared skirt, and add a lighter green sash or narrow belt for contrast. A polished low bun with a jeweled leaf comb on one side looks period without needing a tiara. Gold shadow, winged liner, peach blush and berry lipstick suit the celebration. Pearl earrings and a small menu with a hand-drawn restaurant logo tell the story; a tray of artificial pastries works too. Dark green T-strap heels, gold flats or vintage-style Mary Janes keep this one wearable all evening, with no bulky gown to manage.
8. DIY Green Dress Princess Tiana Costume

A plain green party dress turns into Tiana with a few cheap additions. Choose a knee-length mint or light green dress with a fitted waist and flared skirt. Cut large leaf shapes from darker green felt and attach them around the waist with safety pins or fabric tape; I'd use pins, because fashion tape tends to let go once you're warm and moving. Add a handmade white flower at one hip and pale green gloves. Pull your hair into a high bun and make a small tiara from metallic cardstock glued to a plain headband. Gold shadow, pink blush and berry gloss, a frog plush or paper lily pad, and green ballet flats are all you need.
9. Last-Minute Princess Tiana Costume

Short on time? Raid the closet for green. A light green top with a matching midi skirt works, or any simple green dress with a defined waist. Tie a darker green scarf around the middle to suggest the leafy layers of her gown. Put your hair into a smooth bun and add a gold headband or an inexpensive costume tiara. Champagne shimmer, mascara, rosy blush and pink lipstick are plenty. A plush frog, a white artificial flower or a homemade cardboard lily pad makes the character clear without any sewing. Green flats, neutral pumps or clean gold sandals finish it, and as long as every piece stays in her green-and-gold palette, it looks planned.
10. Plus-Size Princess Tiana Costume

For a plus-size Tiana, I look for support first and drama second. A light green gown with a structured bodice, wide supportive straps and a layered A-line skirt gives the lily silhouette without squeezing, and dark green organza or felt petals at the waist add the shape. Elbow-length gloves and a leafy necklace dress up the top. A high bun, braided bun or natural updo topped with a lightweight tiara keeps the head in proportion with a full skirt. Glowing gold makeup, fluttery lashes, coral blush and berry lipstick. Carry a frog-shaped purse or a white flower. Cushioned green block heels or pointed flats make it wearable for hours, which matters more than an extra inch of height.
11. Princess Tiana Costume With Short Green Dress

A short green dress keeps the princess feel while letting you move. Pick a fit-and-flare dress in mint or pistachio, attach overlapping dark green fabric leaves around the waistband and pin a white faux flower near one hip. Short satin gloves and a delicate gold necklace with a leaf charm add the finish. A neat high bun and small gold tiara keep the character. Fresh skin, gold shadow, mascara and rosy lips suit the lighter shape. Carry a tiny frog purse or plush. Green ankle-strap heels, ballet flats or embellished sneakers make this my pick for dancing or a warm-weather party.
12. Princess Tiana Costume With Green Jumpsuit

A tailored green jumpsuit is the answer for anyone who'd rather wear pants. Choose a mint or sage one-piece with a fitted waist and wide legs, and add a dark green leaf-shaped belt or peplum to echo the structure of her lily gown. Pale green gloves make it read more costume, less outfit. A smooth bun with a gold floral headband, bronze-gold shadow, precise liner, rosy blush and a berry lip. Wide legs catch on platforms, so I hem them to just clear the shoe before adding the leaf peplum. A white lily bouquet and a small frog-shaped bag are the props, with green platforms or block-heel sandals.
13. Princess Tiana Costume With Tulle Skirt

A layered tulle skirt gives you princess volume for far less than a formal gown. Start with a fitted pale green bodysuit or sleeveless top and add a full mint tulle maxi skirt, then secure dark green felt leaves around the waistband so they overlap like lily petals. A large white artificial flower at the center pulls the homemade pieces together. Tulle sheds a little at cut edges and snags on velcro, so check any bag or jacket you plan to wear with it. Pale green gloves, a gold tiara and a delicate pendant, plus a high bun, gold-toned makeup, defined lashes and rose lipstick. Carry a frog plush or a lily wand, and wear green flats or low heels so the long skirt stays manageable.
14. Princess Tiana Costume With Green Corset Top

A corset-style top gives the cosplay version real structure. Choose a comfortable fashion corset or boned bodice and wear a thin camisole underneath, then pair it with a pale green floor-length skirt and add darker leaf panels at the waist and hem. Elbow-length gloves give it a formal finish, and a sleek bun with a leafy gold tiara keeps her hair right. Champagne shimmer, warm blush and berry lipstick. A white lily and a frog-shaped clutch add the character without fighting the dress. Before the event, I'd sit, bend and eat a snack in the corset at home; if you can't breathe comfortably at a dinner table, loosen it a notch. Green pumps or cushioned ballet flats finish it.
15. Princess Tiana Costume With Floral Cape

A sheer floral cape adds drama and a bit of warmth. Begin with a simple mint-green maxi dress or ball gown with a fitted waist and put a translucent pale green cape over the shoulders, ideally one embroidered with leaves or flowers. A dark green belt and a white flower at the waist bring back the lily theme. High bun, small leaf tiara, gold shadow, soft lashes, peach blush and rose lipstick. Carry a tiny frog plush or floral wand, and wear green closed-toe heels or jeweled flats. Because the cape comes off, I like this one for evenings that start outside and move indoors.
16. Princess Tiana Frog Transformation Costume

Her frog transformation is a fun angle if you keep it subtle. Wear a fitted green dress with a petal skirt, then add a lighter green capelet shaped like overlapping lily leaves. A frog-eye headband replaces the tiara for a playful touch, worn over a bun or natural updo. Keep makeup to green-gold shadow, rosy blush and soft berry lipstick; you don't need to paint the face, and doing so pushes the costume away from Tiana and toward a generic frog. A plush lily pad or small frog companion is the main prop. Pale green gloves, leaf jewelry and green flats or frog-accented sneakers keep it family-friendly.
17. Princess Tiana Masquerade Costume

A masquerade Tiana leans into New Orleans color. Choose a green and gold midi or floor-length dress with a fitted bodice and layered skirt, then add a decorative green eye mask with leaf patterns, rhinestones and a small white flower. Light masks on a ribbon tie are easier to live with than rigid ones, and you can slip them off to eat. Swap the large tiara for a gold comb in a high bun. Metallic shadow, defined lashes, warm blush and berry lipstick show around the mask. Long green gloves and a folding fan add grace, and a frog-shaped clutch or lily ornament keeps her identity. Gold T-strap heels or green block heels suit a formal event.
18. 1920s Princess Tiana Costume

Her 1920s setting makes a flapper-style Tiana a natural fit. Pick a knee-length sage dress with tasteful fringe, beading or Art Deco detail, and add a long pearl necklace, pale green gloves and a narrow gold headband with a leaf in place of a feather. A low bun or soft finger waves suit the decade. Gold shadow, defined lashes, warm blush and deep rose lipstick. Carry a small beaded bag, a restaurant menu or an artificial beignet box. Fringe tangles on itself in a car seat, so I give it a shake and a gentle finger-comb when I arrive. Green or gold T-strap shoes are period-right and easy to dance in.
19. Modern Princess Tiana Costume

A modern Tiana is basically a good party outfit in her palette. Wear an emerald midi dress with a fitted waist and an asymmetric petal-shaped hem, and add a lighter green cropped jacket or sheer wrap and gold leaf jewelry. A sleek bun or polished natural updo with a thin gold headband keeps the hair hers. Golden shimmer, brown liner, luminous blush and berry gloss. A structured green handbag with a removable white flower and a frog keychain gives the nod to the film. Gold block-heel sandals or pointed green pumps finish it, and you can wear the dress again long after Halloween.
20. Casual Princess Tiana Costume

For something understated, mix wearable basics in her colors. A fitted light green blouse tucked into a dark green A-line midi skirt sets the base, with a white flower brooch at one side and a thin gold belt at the waist. A simple bun with a leafy headband, gold shadow, mascara, peach blush and berry balm keep it easy. Carry a canvas bakery bag, a frog plush or a handmade restaurant menu. Green ballet flats, gold loafers or clean white sneakers work. This is the version I'd send to school or to a workplace party where a gown would be too much.
21. Princess Tiana Costume With Sneakers

Sneakers don't have to make a princess look unfinished. Wear a mint-green fit-and-flare midi dress with dark green leaf appliqués at the waist, then add a white artificial flower, short green gloves and a lightweight gold tiara. A high bun or braided updo stays neat all day. Soft gold shadow, rosy blush and berry lipstick polish the face. A frog-shaped mini backpack keeps your hands free. For shoes, white or pale green sneakers with satin ribbon laces in place of the regular ones look deliberate. On a walking-heavy day at a parade or a theme event, this is the one your feet will thank you for.
22. Princess Tiana Costume With Cardigan

Cool weather doesn't mean hiding the costume. Start with a pale green midi dress and add a cropped dark green cardigan that stops above the waist, so the shape still shows. Pin felt leaf appliqués and a white flower along the cardigan's neckline or hem, and wear light green tights for warmth. A high bun with a small gold tiara or floral comb, warm gold makeup, mascara, blush and berry lipstick. A frog purse or decorative pastry box is an easy prop. Green ankle boots or closed-toe Mary Janes finish it. The cardigan length is what matters here; a long one covers the waist detail that tells people who you are.
23. Princess Tiana Costume With Long-Sleeve Gown

A long-sleeve gown gives elegance and coverage together. Choose a pale green dress with fitted sheer sleeves, a defined waist and a flowing floor-length skirt, then add darker green petal panels at the hips and a white floral embellishment at the center. With sleeves, I drop the opera gloves and use a leafy gold necklace instead so the sleeve detail stays visible. A smooth bun with a light green tiara, champagne shadow, brown liner, soft blush and berry lipstick. A plush frog or small lily bouquet is the prop. Green closed-toe heels, low pumps or embellished flats suit cooler indoor or outdoor events.
24. Winter Princess Tiana Costume

Winter Tiana is all about layering under the gown. Wear a long-sleeve mint velvet dress, or put a fitted thermal top beneath a sleeveless gown, and add a dark green faux-fur capelet closed with a white flower brooch. Green tights over thermal leggings keep your legs warm without showing. A high bun with a gold leaf tiara, or a lined green hood pushed back far enough to show the tiara. Warm gold shadow, rosy blush and berry lipstick. A frog-shaped hand warmer or small floral purse doubles as a prop. Cushioned green ankle boots replace delicate heels, and in my experience that swap alone is what keeps people outdoors longer.
25. Summer Princess Tiana Costume

For hot weather, go lighter and shorter. A sleeveless mint cotton or chiffon dress around the knee, a dark green leaf belt and one white flower at the waist replace the heavy layered petals. A secure high bun keeps hair off your neck, with a light gold headband instead of a tiara that grips. Cream shadow in gold, waterproof mascara, soft blush and tinted berry balm hold up better in heat than powders. Carry a small frog fan or a floral purse, and wear green flat sandals or ballet flats. Skipping gloves, thick tulle and a floor-length skirt still leaves her clearly recognizable.
26. Glam Princess Tiana Costume

The glam version earns its sparkle through structure. Choose an emerald sequined gown with a fitted bodice and dramatic flared skirt, and add a pale green organza overskirt cut into large petals, fixed with a jeweled white flower at the waist. Crystal gloves or delicate gold bracelets replace plain satin. A polished bun with a rhinestone leaf tiara, metallic gold shadow, defined lashes, luminous blush and glossy berry lips. Sequins rub organza into pills over a long night, so I'd tack the overskirt at a few points rather than letting it move freely against the sequins. A sparkly frog clutch or crystal lily prop, plus gold platforms or green embellished pumps, make this a contest-ready look.
27. Minimalist Princess Tiana Costume

A minimalist Tiana depends on a clean shape and a few clear details. Wear a solid sage slip dress or simple A-line midi with a narrow dark green belt, attach one white flower to the belt and add small gold leaf earrings. A neat high bun with a slim gold headband at the crown, champagne shadow, mascara, peach blush and berry lips. Carry a tiny frog purse or a single artificial lily. Green pointed flats, low sandals or simple pumps. With so few pieces, each one has to be right: the bun high, the flower white and the green clearly green, not gray.
28. Thrifted Princess Tiana Costume

Thrifting is how I'd build a Tiana on a tight budget. Look for a light green formal dress, bridesmaid gown or prom dress with a fitted waist. Cut darker green leaves from a secondhand scarf, curtain or skirt and pin a large white artificial flower where they meet. Used satin gloves, a gold headband and green flats fill in the rest. Style the high bun and wear gold shadow, blush and berry lipstick, then carry a secondhand frog plush or a handmade lily pad. Thrifted formalwear often smells of storage and holds creases, so a wash where the label allows and a careful steam make more difference than any added trim.
29. No-Sew Princess Tiana Costume

No sewing machine, no problem. Start with a plain pale green maxi dress or a matching top and skirt. Cut large leaf shapes from dark green felt and secure them around the waist with safety pins, fashion tape or hook-and-loop dots, then clip a white artificial flower over the center fastening. Hook-and-loop dots with adhesive backs stick to felt well but can pull fibers off delicate dresses, so put the soft loop side against the dress. Add store-bought gloves and a gold headband decorated with small craft leaves. A bun, gold shadow, peach blush and berry gloss, a plush frog or foam lily pad, and green flats or low heels. Everything comes off later, so the dress goes back into your wardrobe.
30. Princess Tiana Apron Dress Costume

This apron version is about Tiana the cook. Wear a simple yellow knee-length dress under a clean white bib apron with roomy front pockets, tie it firmly at the waist and add a small green frog pin near the neckline. A smooth low bun with a narrow white headband or folded fabric cap, plus neutral shadow, mascara, warm blush and rose lipstick. Carry a whisk, wooden spoon, light tray or box of artificial beignets, and keep the tray light; a full one gets heavy fast. Black Mary Janes or supportive block-heel pumps finish the uniform, all from pieces most people already own.
31. Princess Tiana Chef Costume

Picture Tiana running her own kitchen. Pair a crisp white chef jacket with high-waisted sage trousers or a green knee-length skirt, then add a pale green neck scarf and an apron with a handmade lily emblem. A small chef hat over a neat low bun, with some of the hair showing, keeps her silhouette. Warm gold shadow, soft liner, blush and berry lipstick. Carry a wooden spoon, recipe book or a tray of artificial pastries. Green nonslip shoes, white sneakers or black kitchen clogs make it believable. I'd iron the chef jacket properly; a wrinkled white jacket is the first thing that makes it look like a rental.
32. Princess Tiana Restaurant Hostess Costume

A hostess Tiana is polished and easy to wear. Choose a dark green tea-length dress with cap sleeves and a defined waist, then add a gold belt, pearl earrings and a white lily brooch near the collar. A smooth low bun with a gold leaf comb on one side, champagne shadow, precise liner, peach blush and berry lipstick. A small reservation book and pencil or a handmade menu is the main prop, and a frog-shaped handbag adds the playful reference. Gold T-strap heels or dark green Mary Janes. It's the version I'd pick for a workplace Halloween where a ball gown would feel out of place.
33. Princess Tiana Costume for Teens

Teens usually want Tiana to look like an outfit first and a costume second. A mint fit-and-flare midi dress with comfortable straps and a darker green satin ribbon at the waist does that, with a white flower clipped to one side and small gold leaf earrings. A high bun, braided bun or half-up style with a subtle tiara headband, plus age-appropriate makeup like gold shimmer, mascara, pink blush and berry gloss. A frog mini backpack, floral crossbody or handmade lily wand. White sneakers, green flats or low block heels. It works for a school event and still feels fine at a party afterward.
34. Princess Tiana Costume for Kids

For children, soft materials and easy movement come before detail. Choose a light green dress with a stretchy bodice, wide straps and a knee-length layered tulle skirt, and stitch on soft dark green fabric leaves and a white flower rather than pinning them. Style the child's hair in a bun, puff, braids or any comfortable updo, topped with a flexible tiara headband. Use only child-safe face shimmer and tinted lip balm if they want makeup, and patch-test it on the wrist first. A small plush frog is a light prop and a friendly companion. Green ballet flats, slip-on sneakers or soft Mary Janes, and a hem short enough that they won't trip on a curb.
35. Toddler Princess Tiana Costume

Toddlers need simple, washable and comfortable. Choose a soft mint dress with short sleeves, a stretchy waist and a calf-length skirt, with the dark green petals sewn or firmly attached, since pins and small decorations are a choking risk. A fabric white flower and a soft gold headband with no hard points finish it. Hair can stay in a tiny bun, puffs, braids or their usual style. Skip makeup, or use child-safe lip balm at most. A cuddly frog plush is safer than a rigid prop. Green slip-ons, sneakers or flexible ballet flats give secure footing. I'd leave out trailing fabric, long gloves and anything that detaches; toddlers pull at whatever comes loose.
36. Maternity Princess Tiana Costume

A maternity Tiana keeps the lily theme without pressure at the waist. Choose a pale green empire-waist maxi dress in soft stretch fabric and attach dark green petal panels just beneath the bust so they fall over the bump. A white flower at one side and a light sheer cape in place of fitted gloves keep it airy. A high bun or comfortable updo with a soft gold headband, luminous makeup, champagne shadow, peach blush and berry lips. Carry a small frog purse or lily bouquet. Supportive green flats, cushioned sandals or low wedges. I'd skip restrictive bodices, heavy skirts and wobbly shoes altogether.
37. Princess Tiana Costume With Natural Hair

Natural hair can be the best part of a Tiana costume. Wear a pale green gown with a fitted bodice, a layered petal skirt and dark green leaf panels at the waist, then style your hair in a high puff, braided crown, twists, a loc bun or any secure updo that works with your texture. Set a gold leaf tiara at the front so it frames the style instead of hiding it; a tiara with combs or loops for pins holds far better in textured hair than a slippery plastic band. Light green gloves, a floral necklace and a white lily at the waist, plus gold shadow, warm blush and berry lipstick. A frog plush or floral clutch and green block heels or embellished flats finish it.
38. Princess Tiana Costume With Braided Bun

A braided bun adds texture and holds better than a slick one over a long event. Start with a mint-green floor-length gown with a fitted top and a layered lily-petal skirt, and add dark green leaves at the waist, elbow-length gloves and a white flower necklace. Gather your hair into braids, twists or extensions and wrap them into a high rounded bun. I secure the tiara with U-shaped pins pushed into the bun itself, which spreads the weight better than straight bobby pins. Shimmering gold shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and rich berry lipstick. A small frog-shaped purse or white lily bouquet, plus green pumps or cushioned gold flats.
39. Princess Tiana And Prince Naveen Couple Costume

For a couple, one person wears Tiana's green lily gown and the other takes Prince Naveen's formal royal look. Tiana needs the pale green petal gown, high bun, gold tiara, gloves, white flower and green flats. Naveen wears cream trousers, a white shirt, a blue military-style jacket with gold trim, a coordinating sash and brown dress shoes, with neat hair and a small crown or royal hat. Share a plush frog and a lily flower as props. I'd match the gold trim on his jacket to the gold of her tiara, because that small echo is what makes two separate costumes look like a pair in photos.
40. Princess Tiana And Charlotte Duo Costume

Tiana and Charlotte make a duo with built-in contrast. The Tiana wearer takes the pale green lily-petal dress, green gloves, high bun, leaf tiara, berry makeup and matching flats. Charlotte wears a dramatic pink ball gown with puffed or off-the-shoulder sleeves, long pink gloves, big blonde curls, a small tiara and pink shoes. Keep both faces polished with rosy blush and glossy lips. Tiana carries a frog plush, Charlotte a pink fan or sparkly bag. The green-and-pink pairing reads from across a room, and it suits best friends or sisters who like the idea of one quiet princess and one very loud one.
Building Lily Petals That Hold Their Curve
The layered petals are what turn a green dress into Tiana's gown, and flat, droopy petals are the most common reason a homemade version looks unfinished. This is how I build them.
- Pick two greens. Pale mint for the outer skirt and a darker leaf green for the waist panels give the opening-flower look; one flat shade just reads as a green dress.
- Cut each petal as a long rounded teardrop, roughly the length from your waist to mid-thigh, and cut six to eight of them.
- For organza or chiffon petals, run a narrow rolled hem with fishing line inside the edge. The line makes the hem wave and curl outward instead of hanging limp.
- For felt petals, use stiff felt or fuse interfacing to the back, and press a gentle curve into each with your fingers while it's still warm from the iron.
- Overlap the petals around a waistband, darker ones on top, and stitch through the top inch only so the lower edges stay free to move.
If you're not sewing, the same petals pinned onto a wide elastic band you step into will hold well and come off the dress cleanly afterward.
Beignets, Frogs and Props Worth Carrying
A prop does a lot of the explaining for Tiana, especially on the simpler outfits. I keep every one light enough to carry for hours with one hand.
Felt beignets are easy: cut pillowy squares from tan felt, stuff them lightly and stitch the edges, then brush on a little white fabric paint for the powdered sugar. Real powdered sugar ends up on the dress within minutes. A plush frog with a tiny crown sewn or glued to its head is the clearest single clue, and it works with any of her looks. For the bayou outfit, a battery tea light inside a small jar makes a firefly lantern that nods to Ray; check that the lid closes so the light doesn't fall out. Skip glass serving trays and metal kitchen tools in crowds; a plastic tray and a wooden spoon look the same in photos.
Green, Gold and a High Bun Carry Every Tiana
Tiana has room for every kind of costume maker, from the full lily-pad gown to the waitress uniform that shows her hardworking side. Modern dresses, jumpsuits, thrifted finds and no-sew accessories bring her within reach of any budget. Whichever version you build, plan the clothing, hair, makeup, props and shoes together rather than piece by piece. Her green, yellow, blue and white palettes give you strong recognition on their own, with no need to alter your skin tone or features. Pick the one you'll be comfortable wearing all night, because that's the Tiana people will remember.
